- 0:00All right, we are live. Deep breath, breathe with me,
- 0:04Blues fans. I don't even know what to say.
- 0:07I'm going to have to say some things, though, because we're
- 0:10live and we're talking about just a gut wrenching,
- 0:15heartbreaking ending to the 2024-2025 season for the Saint
- 0:21Louis Blues. This one stings, Hurts.
- 0:27Roller coaster of emotions. Crazy season, didn't even think
- 0:32the team would make the play offs then they do.
- 0:36They're facing the number one seed.
- 0:38Take him to a Game 7 on the road and lose in double overtime
- 0:47after leading three. One with what, 2 minutes or so
- 0:53to go? Leading 3/2 with 3 seconds to go
- 1:01and The Jets score, sending it to overtime.
- 1:05And man, I've been in Saint Louis since 2008, so it's 2025,
- 1:11almost exactly 17 years I've been here.
- 1:15I'm trying to think of a worse loss for our local sports teams.
- 1:21I can't think of one. I was there for Michael Waka
- 1:25against the Giants in the NLCS, but I didn't.
- 1:29I didn't think the Cardinals were going to win that game.
- 1:32For the Blues to play so well, to be literally not even 3
- 1:39seconds away from advancing to the second round of the Stanley
- 1:45Cup play offs, to lose like that.
- 1:48I want to hear from you all. What do you think of the season?
- 1:51What do you think of the series? What do you think of the finish?
- 1:55I'm, I'm not going to lie to you, I had a bad feeling going
- 1:59into that game, right. It wasn't like the Blues didn't
- 2:01have a chance. I was on XI was talking to
- 2:04folks, asking them their confidence level and I was
- 2:08around about a 4040 out of 140 sixty leaning the way of the
- 2:15Winnipeg Jets. The reason for that is because
- 2:18this was just straight up, for two weeks, a home ice series.
- 2:23All seven games, the home team won every single game.
- 2:28By the way, Connor Hellebug, who played so terribly on the road,
- 2:35He was different at home. And look, give that dude a lot
- 2:38of credit. He was pulled from every game in
- 2:43Saint Louis, all three games. Think about that mentally.
- 2:48And then terrible start for counter Hella Buck.
- 2:52I'm not saying it was all his fault in game seven, but the
- 2:55Blues go ahead super quick, go up to zip very, very early.
- 3:00Let me check exactly when that was.
- 3:03So the Blues, they get that goal where Jordan Cairo can just swat
- 3:08it in there, $1.10 into the game.
- 3:11So one minute in counter Hella Buck, who you think is probably
- 3:15mentally domed up a little bit, get something really bad
- 3:18happening. A minute 10 in the Blues score
- 3:22again. Matthew Joseph scores 716 into
- 3:26the first period. So the Blues have a fantastic
- 3:29first period and the Blues after 2 are up three one.
- 3:35But Connor Hellebuk, look, he didn't fold.
- 3:38If if you're watching that game, I was watching the the Turner
- 3:42broadcast and early on there they were talking about do you
- 3:48do you pull Hellebuk? And I can't remember if it was
- 3:50right after the first goal, if it was after the second goal,
- 3:54but the broadcast was discussing the fact that, look, if there's
- 3:57another goal, you probably got to pull this guy.
- 3:59So give Conor Hellebuk all of the credit in the world after
- 4:04just going through the emotional mental roller coaster of all
- 4:07those games, getting pulled three times early goals in game
- 4:10seven. He writes the ship.
- 4:12He's really, really good. But also the team game.
- 4:15This was more about the team game for The Jets.
- 4:19The Jets freaking dominated the overtime periods, absolutely
- 4:24dominated the overtime periods. When you're watching that, I was
- 4:27just sitting thinking any second here the Blues are going to lose
- 4:31this game. I I had a bad feeling going into
- 4:35the game. And then I think it's just
- 4:37obvious you have a horrible feeling when you talk about
- 4:41momentum and you're on the road and it's a whiteout.
- 4:44And that barn, they were tense, right?
- 4:48They were. They were waiting for something
- 4:50bad to happen until a couple good things happen, then all of
- 4:54a sudden they're behind you. And The Jets played so much
- 4:57better than the Blues in the overtime periods.
- 5:01Let's look at the stats, by the way, just overall.
- 5:04Look, there are some games where the Blues played really well and
- 5:07lost. I thought that game won.
- 5:09The Blues played really well, except for the third period.
- 5:11But a a lot of the stat sheet, score sheet statistics, the
- 5:15Blues were better in in some of these games, even if they lost.
- 5:19I'm talking about game one. I'm not saying they played
- 5:21better than The Jets in game one, but it was so Dang close.
- 5:25But let's just look at the the stats real quick.
- 5:28I mean, shots, Jets outshoot the Blues 47 to 29.
- 5:35Just absolutely dominate them in shots, especially in the
- 5:39overtime periods. Hits Jets with 73, Blues with
- 5:4349. Not close.
- 5:45Blues were better on the face, off dot about 5644.
- 5:50OK. On the power play, Jets did
- 5:53score one out of two. Blues only got the one.
- 5:57Power play, block shots, Blues up 2924 giveaways, Blues 3333
- 6:05giveaways. The Jets had 22.
- 6:07But The Jets just played better. They played better, especially
- 6:11when it mattered. I mean, I, I don't know what you
- 6:14guys were thinking, but it's it's almost impossible to come
- 6:20back from what happened to the Blues in the last two minutes or
- 6:24so of of that game in regulation.
- 6:27You're up three one. And by the way, Jordan
- 6:30Bennington played pretty Dang well, don't you think?
- 6:33I mean, of all those goals and if you really think about if you
- 6:38think about the goals throughout the series now in the in, I keep
- 6:41going back to game one for some reason, that one's really stuck
- 6:45in my head as well. There were some high end plays
- 6:49there at the end where The Jets scored just some legitimate high
- 6:53end talent goals. But if you think back through
- 6:55this series, especially game seven, I mean Jordan Bennington,
- 7:00almost everything that went in there deflected just perfect
- 7:04redirects. I I think Jordan Bennington
- 7:06played really, really well. So did counter Hella Buck.
- 7:09But to me, this one was about the team game where The Jets
- 7:13just straight up outplayed the Blues when it mattered in the
- 7:18overtime periods. And also this has been a bugaboo
- 7:20for the Blues all season long when it got to be 6 on five when
- 7:25The Jets pulled Hella buck at the end of of regulation there
- 7:29and just scored Bing bang twice in the last couple minutes,
- 7:34including the game tying goal with less than 3 seconds to go.
- 7:39So you had what, less than two minutes?
- 7:43You had the the the three two goal that was at 18 O four and
- 7:48then technically 1957, but less than 3 seconds.
- 7:52Cole Perfetti scores that goal to tie it up 3 three.
- 7:55And it's just I mean, come on, guys, you had to have a terrible
- 7:59feeling when that happened to lose all the momentum.
- 8:02You're on the road to go to overtime.
- 8:06I almost thought this was going to be one of those games where
- 8:09The Jets come out immediately in overtime and just score and it's
- 8:12over. But credit the Blues to play so
- 8:15tough. They played tough.
- 8:18They didn't play well in the overtime periods.
- 8:21They played tough. But The Jets were just so much
- 8:24better than the Blues. And you just you don't win a
- 8:27game like that. Can you remember a game where
- 8:30you you give up the lead in heartbreaking fashion with three
- 8:34seconds to go and you come back in a big spot and still win the
- 8:39game? I can't I don't have the
- 8:40greatest memory. I can't think of any games like
- 8:42that. So look, overall, a great season
- 8:47for the Blues or a really good season.
- 8:50It's hard to focus on that day after.
- 8:52I don't even know if we should, right, because it it, it's
- 8:56interesting. When I was on X asking people
- 8:59their confidence level, a lot of people said, you know what, they
- 9:03win. It's great if they lose.
- 9:05It's still a hell of a season. But I don't think you can, you
- 9:09can't think about that right now with the way they lost, right?
- 9:12If they played well. But they lost 4, three in in
- 9:17regulation and The Jets played better the whole game.
- 9:20That one much easier to swallow when you lose 4-3 in double
- 9:25overtime when you at least control the game for almost the
- 9:30entirety of regulation for 58 minutes.
- 9:34Essentially, you have a two goal lead and even for for 59 minutes
- 9:40and frickin 57 seconds, you're leading that game and you give
- 9:44it up like that. Look, I mean the Blues will be
- 9:48able to come back from it. This is this is a a team that I
- 9:51think is going to be good in the future.
- 9:53But the other part is the the progress in professional sports,
- 9:57it's not always linear, right? I mean, the Blues after the Four
- 10:01Nations tournament were so good, 12 game-winning streak went from
- 10:05a team that most people didn't think was going to even make the
- 10:08playoffs to a playoff team playing the number one seed with
- 10:12a chance, with a great chance to beat them.
- 10:15They had an absolutely great chance to beat them.
- 10:17I would think the Blues are going to be better next year,
- 10:20but that doesn't mean the Blues are going to win a playoff
- 10:23series. You could have a bad match up in
- 10:25the first round. You could play well, go against
- 10:28a a better team. You could run into a really hot
- 10:30goalie. I think the Blues are going to
- 10:32be better next season. That doesn't mean they're going
- 10:34to win a playoff series. I do think if you're a Blues
- 10:36fan, you got to be excited though.
- 10:39It sure as hell seems like you have the right coach and Jim
- 10:42Montgomery. You have a lot of good pieces in
- 10:45place. You have a a good core, you have
- 10:48Robert Thomas, you have Jordan Kairu.
- 10:52Obviously Pareco's getting getting older, but he's not
- 10:56super old. So you got to be happy and
- 11:00excited about the future. Again, Monty is is the guy for
- 11:04the job. You got to think.
- 11:05But that doesn't mean that the Blues are going to necessarily
- 11:08go on a run next year. I hope they do.
- 11:10It's going to be a very interesting offseason with some
- 11:13additions and subtractions. Doug Armstrong has the chance to
- 11:17make this team better. I have confidence that that he
- 11:19will also give give credit to Doug Armstrong.
- 11:22Remember a couple years ago he basically said as he's thinking
- 11:26about eventually moving on, you have Alexander Steen to take
- 11:30over his spot in a in a few years, whenever that whenever
- 11:34that officially happens. But I remember Doug Armstrong
- 11:36saying, look, you want to leave a place better than when you got
- 11:40there. And clearly, Doug Armstrong puts
- 11:43together the team that wins the Cup in 2019.
- 11:45But the last couple years, you're thinking, OK, are the
- 11:48Blues in a great spot? They hadn't made the playoffs
- 11:52the last couple years. Well, now the Blues, I think,
- 11:54are in a very good spot. Doug Armstrong has them set up
- 11:57for success for the foreseeable future.
- 12:00Jim Montgomery, it sure as heck seems like is the right person
- 12:04for the job. And we can discuss all of this
- 12:07though, in the coming weeks, months, whatever it is.
- 12:12But man, to lose in that fashion, folks, is just so
- 12:17brutal. I don't have to tell you, it's
- 12:20so brutal. You almost, you almost wish.
- 12:24You don't wish, OK, you would have got swept.
- 12:27I mean, there were fun games, hockey play offs, though.
- 12:31It's so much fun in the city. Just knowing if the Blues would
- 12:34have won, you had at least another couple weeks of fun.
- 12:38You're kind of scheduling your your days and your nights around
- 12:41around watching the games, man, to be that freaking close.
- 12:45And I still think, look, the Blues could have went on a run,
- 12:49right? They could have beat the stars.
- 12:52I, I don't know, I'm not saying they would have, but to think
- 12:54the Blues just would have been one and done.
- 12:56And I know there are all these comparisons to 2019.
- 12:59Why not make those comparisons? Why?
- 13:01Why couldn't the Blues go on a deep run?
- 13:03You don't have that many opportunities.
- 13:05Again, the Blues may be better next year.
- 13:07They could still lose in the first round of the play offs.
- 13:09They can match up against somebody really, really good in
- 13:12the first round. Man, what a brutal loss.
- 13:16What a brutal ending. That goes up there with some of
- 13:19the worst, obviously in Saint Louis history.
- 13:22It's not Denkinger. That was the World Series.
- 13:25You, you tell me guys, What, what is it?
- 13:28What is it in terms of the rankings?
- 13:30It's it's so fresh right now. I can't think of a worst loss
- 13:34since I've been here since 2008. I mean, it wasn't the World
- 13:38Series, it wasn't the Stanley Cup Final.
- 13:42I mean, we can talk about the hand pass, but it also matters
- 13:45how things end up. Like anything bad that happened
- 13:48in 2019, you don't care about, you don't talk about because the
- 13:51Blues won the Stanley Cup. Obviously for it to end like
- 13:55that, the finality just absolutely brutal.
- 14:00Also, guys, you see here, Triad Bank, my great sponsor, been a
- 14:04sponsor for four or five years, been going there for for five
- 14:09years. Best thing I ever did for my
- 14:10rental property business. Taken all my commercial loans
- 14:13from a big National Bank that doesn't care about me, that
- 14:15didn't care about me to Triad Bank, a local bank.
- 14:18And look, you see that logo celebrating 20 years, Triad
- 14:23Bank, 20 years, 2005 to 2025. They have retail banking as
- 14:29well. My guy Matthew Tobin, he can
- 14:31help you out. I have many loans with Triad
- 14:33Bank. And again, the customer service
- 14:35is top notch. Best thing I ever did for my
- 14:37rental property business. Heading on over to Front neck
- 14:40and Triad Bank, Saint Louis lawn care, Saint Louis equipment, my
- 14:44guy Tim Jenkerson, St. Louis Lawn Care, been cutting my
- 14:48grass for a good, I don't know, four or five years.
- 14:51Whatever it is, they do it all though, they're going to redo a
- 14:54bunch of my a bunch of my trees and flower beds with some
- 14:59boxwoods. Bring them in, trim them.
- 15:01They're going to plant a big juniper where I'm missing one
- 15:05right in the back here for some privacy.
- 15:07Is it is it Arbor Vita? I don't know how to pronounce
- 15:10it, but they're going to bring a bunch of those.
- 15:11And my point is, they do it all. Saint Louis long hair.
- 15:13They'll cut your grass. I got the mulch.
- 15:16The mulch looks great and then anything for for bringing in,
- 15:20like I said, the trees, trimming any type of bushes, whatever you
- 15:24got in your front yard. They do all that and then Saint
- 15:27Louis equipment. Get your mower repaired, buy a
- 15:30new mower. They have all the big time
- 15:32mowers out there, right? All the great brands.
- 15:36I bought a Husqvarna blower over there, which is fantastic, super
- 15:41powerful. I bought a Crest battery
- 15:43operated trimmer also. You think batteries are maybe
- 15:46not that powerful? This thing freaking super
- 15:48powerful. So they had everything.
- 15:51Saint Louis equipment, Saint Louis lawn care, my guy.
- 15:54Tim Jenkerson, we have somebody in the chat here.
- 15:56Joey Nichols says total meltdown.
- 16:01Yeah. I don't know a better way to
- 16:03describe it than that, Joey. Total freaking meltdown, end of
- 16:08that game. You control the game throughout.
- 16:11Embarrassing. Joey Nichols says yeah, yeah,
- 16:16it's it's weird because you are going up against the one seed.
- 16:18You're on the road. If if you'd have said beforehand
- 16:22the Blues lose freaking Game 7, double overtime on the road.
- 16:27Is that an embarrassing way to end?
- 16:29You're saying no. But to control that game for
- 16:325859 minutes, to lose in that fashion, God, man, you have to.
- 16:41You have to credit Winnipeg, though, too.
- 16:43Winnipeg brought it and Connor Hallibuck early on was shaky.
- 16:48You wonder, are they going to pull on the broadcast on?
- 16:51Turner was talking about that, right?
- 16:54I mean, he was steadfast. He picked his game up and and
- 16:59The Jets made the plays when they had to at the end of that
- 17:02game. The Jets, I mean, they had they
- 17:04had some good bounces. Let's be real.
- 17:05A lot of those goals, let's be real, lot of deflections, lot of
- 17:09redirects. But the overtime periods, The
- 17:11Jets were just way, way better than the Blues.
- 17:15Not even close, not even close. All right, not going to go too
- 17:19long. Joey Nichols, appreciate you
- 17:21watching. I'm going to repost this on
- 17:25YouTube and also Kenny Wallace media for the podcast for all
- 17:28you guys. Thank you so much.
- 17:30Heck of a year for the Blues, but God Dang, what a terrible
- 17:34way. You just can't sugarcoat it.
- 17:37You you can't even do the morale happy to be here.
- 17:40You can't when you when you lose like that, you can look back in
- 17:43a couple days weeks, you can say overall it was a good season,
- 17:46but when you lose in that fashion, God Dang, just an awful
- 17:51way to lose. Joey Nichols says Blues didn't
- 17:54have any legs in OT. Yeah, whatever it was, The Jets
- 17:59absolutely outplayed them in the overtime periods.
- 18:02Not a shock. I was sitting there just kind of
- 18:04waiting. I was just kind of waiting for
- 18:06the goal to happen. You just got that sense.
- 18:09The Blues, we're not going to win that game after the way they
- 18:12they gave up the lead at the end of regulation.
- 18:14So there it is. Overall good season.
- 18:17We can talk about that more in the future.
- 18:19Hey, look, they got me. I'm not a die hard hockey Blues
- 18:23fan at all. They got me super interested and
- 18:27it was fun to watch the games for a couple weeks.
- 18:28But look, I'm the type of person I probably won't watch NHL play
- 18:32offs anymore. That's just that's how I am as a
- 18:34sports fan. I'm mostly for work covering
- 18:37NASCAR. Cardinals aren't very good and I
- 18:40was in it for the Blues and I was really looking forward to at
- 18:42least another couple weeks of Blues games.
- 18:44That that's how I am. I mean the hockey play offs are
- 18:46unbelievable, but I'm not a a die hard hockey fan so I
- 18:50probably won't won't watch much of the NHL play offs now that
- 18:53the Blues are out. But man, yeah, good season
- 18:56overall. We'll focus on that later.
- 18:58But just a gut wrenching, heartbreaking way to end it for
- 19:02the Saint Louis Blues. Credit to the Winnipeg Jets and
- 19:05one more time, thanks to my sponsors.
- 19:08You got Saint Louis lawn care, Saint Louis equipment, Triad
- 19:11Bank celebrating 20 years in the business, corner butcher and
- 19:16chophouse over there in the Fenton Valley Park area.
- 19:18Love you all. Thanks for watching Sports Hub
- 19:21STL and Blues Hub STL as well and catching us on the podcast
- 19:25here. Kenny Wallace media, love you
- 19:28all. Peace out Blues.
- 19:30Dang Dang Dang, Dang Blues. You gave us a fun ride for a
- 19:35couple weeks, but gosh Dang was that just freaking depressing,
- 19:40heart wrenching, heartbreaking, gut wrenching, whatever the word
- 19:45is. I don't even know what to say.
- 19:48I'm kind of speechless 20 minutes in.
- 19:50I'm kind of speechless now I'm just going to get us to 20
- 19:53minutes, 3-2. You see, I started at 3, three
- 19:56seconds, 3 seconds or the Blues lost the freaking game seven
- 20:02with about 3 seconds to go. Awful.
- 20:04All right, see you guys. Love you all.
