Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / Rick Mast: NASCAR Better Not Slow These Cars Down Just Because They're Flipping!
Transcript
- 0:00Hi everybody. Coming to you from Rick's trophy
- 0:03room this week. Not a lot of neat stuff in this
- 0:05trophy room we're going to talk about.
- 0:07I'm going to touch touch on a subject that's hot right now and
- 0:10that's these cars flying in the air, getting up in the air,
- 0:13getting there under them, get flipping and all that.
- 0:15Couple things is irritated me a little bit about that.
- 0:18So the cars are flying in there, there is getting under, they're
- 0:20getting up, they're flipping. We saw all that at Daytona.
- 0:23Everybody's got an opinion about it.
- 0:25So you know, quickly if we go back 80s, whatever, 7 or 888788
- 0:31Bobby Allison gets in the fence at the start finish line at
- 0:35Talladega. So the as the story goes, the,
- 0:38the, the, the liability, the liability carriers, insurance
- 0:42companies with NASCAR said we can't have this car is getting
- 0:45in the grandstands. Of course we all know we can't
- 0:47have that. So also the story goes at
- 0:50somehow another 200 miles an hour was was the magic number
- 0:54that they put on this thing that the cars couldn't go over.
- 0:58Whether all that's true or not, I don't know.
- 0:59I'm just telling you that that was a story that we've all heard
- 1:02for years. So what happened, France, Billy
- 1:05Junior had slowed the cars down. And believe me, the last thing
- 1:07this dude wanted to do was put restricted plates on race cars
- 1:10and slow them down. But you know, because I guess
- 1:13again, because of insurance, we had to do that.
- 1:14Now, all through the years, we fought this and fought it at
- 1:19Talladega Daytona. You know what it started doing?
- 1:21It started getting us in a big pack.
- 1:23I remember early on at Talladega, we were running too
- 1:27wide and I, I looked in the mirror and I saw somebody coming
- 1:30and looked like up through the middle.
- 1:32And all of a sudden that car went by me.
- 1:35I was on the inside lane. Whoever's on the outside, this
- 1:38car split us and went between US.
- 1:40And I watched this dude go all the way to the front of the pack
- 1:44by himself in the third, in the 2nd lane or the middle lane that
- 1:47nobody was in that we had never discovered before.
- 1:51And the guy's name is Billy Standridge, if anybody remembers
- 1:54that name. And I remember thinking, damn,
- 1:57what's this all about? Well, the first thing, you know,
- 1:59everybody figured that out. So now we're running three wide,
- 2:03deep as you could go from the front, from the front to the
- 2:05back. And I remember when the race was
- 2:08over, thinking, damn, what was that?
- 2:10What was that about? Then the next week, I'll never
- 2:12forget Dale Jarrett came to him and he said, Rick.
- 2:14I said, yeah. He said, man, have you ever
- 2:15experienced anything like what we went through last week with
- 2:18that three wide stuff? I said no, first time for me,
- 2:20Dale, and he said first time for me too, Rick.
- 2:23From that moment forward, that's what we've had at these places.
- 2:26The plates have made these tracks are these races, you
- 2:29know, tight like that, three wide and all that, all that
- 2:32stuff. But anyhow, the, what I'm going
- 2:36to take issue with a little bit is I heard a couple of the
- 2:41journalists or people that comment on our sport for the
- 2:45media suggesting that maybe, maybe we didn't slow the cars
- 2:49down. All right.
- 2:51And one of me went so far as to say, you know, 20 or 30 miles an
- 2:54hour, need to slow down 20 or 30 miles an hour.
- 2:56I can't tell the difference. I don't see the difference in
- 2:58that. Well, maybe you can't, but I
- 3:00can. 20 or 30 miles an hour. Yes, you can tell that.
- 3:04You you'll know that. And it's not just the speed, but
- 3:07it's like an overall feeling you'll get now, three or four
- 3:10miles an hour, 5 miles an hour. Yeah.
- 3:12I I can't see it. You can't see it.
- 3:14Fans can't see it, but this notion of slowing down 20 or 30
- 3:18miles an hour, no, you know, was it Hemingway?
- 3:23Was it Hemingway made the famous quote, the only true sports or
- 3:27mountain climbing, bull riding and auto racing.
- 3:29And I guess that was made probably he probably made that
- 3:32quote in the 60s maybe I don't know when auto racing was very,
- 3:35very, very dangerous. So we losing so many lives
- 3:38fighting a bull. I am, I'm not getting in a ring
- 3:40with a bull and fighting that thing.
- 3:42Mountain climbing, No, I don't think I'm going to do that.
- 3:44But anyhow, well, I think what he meant by that there, there's
- 3:48a fear factor in these things and auto racing, there's always
- 3:52been a fear factor. And I think, well, I don't, I
- 3:56don't think I know part of the lure of our sport is the fear of
- 4:00of what these drivers are putting themselves in for,
- 4:03right? If you're a race car driver,
- 4:05man, you know what you're signing up for.
- 4:07Now, granted, it's this, this thing is safer now than it's
- 4:11ever been. The guys, you know, they're
- 4:14doing all this wrecking. They're not really getting hurt
- 4:16much any longer other than, you know, the, the head deal with
- 4:19Kirk, Kirk, Kurt and the other dude.
- 4:21But anyhow, they're they're you know, it's safer.
- 4:24It's the safest it's ever been. And and we've taken by doing
- 4:29that. Maybe you take a little bit of
- 4:31the fear factor out for for the for the fans that's watching it.
- 4:35I don't know. But if you're a race car driver,
- 4:38you accept this, you know, when you get in that race car, then
- 4:43you might not come back or you might get hurt.
- 4:46I mean, and believe me, it's nothing fun about getting upside
- 4:49down in these race cars, especially these big racers,
- 4:52man, you're, you're listening to, you're hearing this from a
- 4:54guy that did it right. I was on the roof at Talladega
- 4:57at 204 miles an hour. Believe me, there's nothing fun
- 5:00about that. You know, you're riding along
- 5:02upside down. You're like, you realize it
- 5:05seems like an eternity, but it's only a few short seconds.
- 5:07You realize that you have no control over anything.
- 5:11I mean, there's nothing in your life in that moment that you
- 5:14control, right? It's totally in God's hands or
- 5:17the safety's hands or whatever you want to look at it, you
- 5:20know, and however you end up. So race car drivers know this.
- 5:24If there is ever a race car driver that said we need to slow
- 5:29the cars down, I don't want that race car driver to be
- 5:32representing my sport, right? That's not the mentality to
- 5:36have. That's not the right mentality.
- 5:38I don't care if somebody wants to take issue with that, fine,
- 5:41take issue with it. But you know, part of being a
- 5:44race car driver is accepting the fact that you can't get hurt.
- 5:48I mean, when you y'all, y'all have seen this quote many times
- 5:51to me guys, if you race them, you're going to wreck them.
- 5:54If you wreck them, sometimes it hurts and sometimes you get
- 5:57hurt, right? And then sometimes it's even
- 5:59worse than that. But having lived through that in
- 6:02my era with broken bones, concussions, shoulder, all kinds
- 6:08of stuff, right? You know, you, you accept that,
- 6:11you go on again. Right now, the cars are safe.
- 6:13They're safer than they've ever been.
- 6:16To keep the cars down. This is all about keeping the
- 6:18cars out of the grandstands. We know that, we understand
- 6:21that. We respect that.
- 6:22We accept that the the the fences at these tracks that
- 6:27we've shown that they seem to withstand or will hold these
- 6:31cars in the race tracks now like Austin Dilla did.
- 6:34It was it Newman, somebody? I don't know.
- 6:36It's been four or five of these cars up in these sketch fences
- 6:38now and they just spit them back out on the racetrack, which is a
- 6:41good thing. But I'm, I'm just, I'm just
- 6:44saying I'm, I'm afraid we don't, we don't need to unfair our
- 6:49sport. But I don't mean that fans go to
- 6:53watch crashes and people get hurt.
- 6:55That's not what this is about. I don't think most fans for the
- 7:00most part, don't want to see guys get hurt.
- 7:03They just don't. You see action.
- 7:05You see if somebody does have a bad crash, it's going to happen.
- 7:09And that that adds to the excitement of our sport.
- 7:12Again, auto racing, one of the appeals is the fear factor.
- 7:17There's no way out of that. If you go to Daytona, are you
- 7:21going to slow me down 30 miles an hour?
- 7:23You take 30 miles an hour away from them or 20 miles an hour
- 7:25right now and go to Daytona and sit in the grandstands and watch
- 7:28it. I'm telling you right now, you
- 7:31won't have those same people come back to the next race
- 7:33because it is not the same. It's not not something you sit
- 7:37there and think, wow, they're going 30 miles an hour slower.
- 7:39You're not saying that. You're saying when they come by
- 7:41you and you look at them go by, you're like, damn, that What's
- 7:44so special about this? You know, this big old track and
- 7:47they're just lumbering by. No, dude, when they come back,
- 7:51when those race cars come back as a fan, your breath has to be
- 7:54taken away. We saw a video, we've seen
- 7:56videos of people standing clear the near the fence at at some of
- 7:59these large tracks when they come out of the first lap,
- 8:02especially the first time fans and the cars come back at such a
- 8:04tremendous amount of speed and the air and the noise and these
- 8:07guy, these people do they just get blown back they're like
- 8:10crap. What was that all about right?
- 8:12You cannot take that away from our sport.
- 8:15You you just can't do it. If anybody thinks that you can
- 8:20do that and still have the same appeal, I'm telling you, it's
- 8:25not going to be, it's just not going to happen again.
- 8:27It's a feeling. It's a feeling you have when
- 8:29you're at this event and, you know, for the for the people
- 8:33that follow our sport are the people that write a report on
- 8:36our sport to, to come up with these things.
- 8:39Yeah, I understand. You're, you're you're you're
- 8:41thinking about what to do to keep the cars on the racetrack.
- 8:44Well, guess what? Cars are going to get up if if
- 8:47you wreck you, I mean, if you race, you're going to wreck,
- 8:51right? And sometimes when you get
- 8:52sideways and, and things get just right, you're going to
- 8:55flip, you're going to get up in the air.
- 8:57Air is going to get under your car.
- 8:58I don't give a darn what NASCAR does.
- 9:01They've they've, they've done so many things right now that, that
- 9:04the cars for the most part, stay on the ground better than
- 9:07they've ever done in our history, right?
- 9:09When I got sideways, we didn't have roof flaps, right?
- 9:13Not even sure we had a window lift.
- 9:15I don't know what we have Anyhow, I just got sideways,
- 9:17went up in the air, right. And then then the wreck started.
- 9:20But but you know, you just sometimes guys, you just got to
- 9:25accept the facts. The facts are racing is a
- 9:29dangerous sport and you have to accept that, right?
- 9:32Again, we don't want to get we don't want them getting up in
- 9:35the grandstands. But they've already said 200
- 9:37miles an hour is there is is a magic number.
- 9:39We're keeping them at 200 or under.
- 9:41You can't slow them down more. Hell, these poor drivers right
- 9:44now, they're running half some of these race tracks almost wide
- 9:46open because we've got them choked down so bad.
- 9:48I mean, they're doing it. Atlanta is now a mini Talladega,
- 9:51a mini Daytona, right? You go to some of these places
- 9:53go like Texas, they're just barely getting out of the gas.
- 9:57You take more speed out of them and they're they're going to be
- 10:00holding wide open at half the tracks to go to.
- 10:02And that's not good for racing. It's not good for the drivers.
- 10:05The drivers hate it. You can't, you know, there's no,
- 10:07there's no acceleration acceleration.
- 10:10Your car won't pull up and won't do things.
- 10:12You know, you just can't do that.
- 10:14You cannot take but so much speed out of these race cars and
- 10:19and expect to have the appeal that that that, that that makes
- 10:23this this sport of our NASCAR sport of ours, NASCAR or any
- 10:28racing for that matter, so important or so exciting, right,
- 10:32right. You just it, it's just not
- 10:34you're not going to do it. I mean, again, if you're a
- 10:36driver, you want to slow them down, man, go go buy groceries
- 10:40at Walmart. Do don't do go do something
- 10:42else. Don't don't be involved with
- 10:43this. If you're if you're a follower
- 10:46of our sport and you report on our sport, right?
- 10:49Think about what I'm telling you.
- 10:50Think about, you know what, maybe Rick has got a point.
- 10:53We don't need to slow these cars down, but we do need to keep
- 10:56them safe. And and then with all that being
- 10:58said, you've got to accept the fact the cars are going to
- 11:01frigate, get up in the air. They'll do everything they can
- 11:04and they're doing it right now to keep them on the racetrack,
- 11:07keep them down. But racing's racing.
- 11:09If you take all the fear out of it, it's gone.
- 11:13It's not going to be relevant any longer.
- 11:15So anyhow, that's my take on that.
