- 0:01Speaker 1: You are now listening to the Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Hello, this is Aaron West. I am the author of
- 0:15Speaker 2: the A twenty four New Wave. In this book, I
- 0:18Speaker 2: look at A twenty four's output and I make the
- 0:21Speaker 2: argument that we are in a new wave movement right now.
- 0:23Speaker 2: A twenty four plays a major role. This book has
- 0:27Speaker 2: a supplemental podcast where each episode is a brief conversation
- 0:30Speaker 2: about an A twenty four related topic, whether an actor, director,
- 0:35Speaker 2: or even a genre. As I continue research for the
- 0:38Speaker 2: book and conduct interviews, I expect to record podcasts episodes
- 0:41Speaker 2: with people involved with the company. You can find the
- 0:44Speaker 2: podcast at sindjourneys dot com or wherever you find podcasts.
- 0:48Speaker 2: And we are proud to be members of the Someone's
- 0:51Speaker 2: Favorite Productions Podcast Network.
- 0:56Speaker 3: What's going On? Everyone? Welcome back to a brand new
- 0:59Speaker 3: episodeisode of the Beyond the Blood podcast. I'm gonna be
- 1:03Speaker 3: your host tonight. My name is Chris. I sometimes go
- 1:05Speaker 3: on the internet by Bearded film Guy, and I'm here
- 1:07Speaker 3: today with my lovely co host. How are you, Steve?
- 1:11Speaker 4: What's going on? Man? That's quite the introduction?
- 1:14Speaker 3: What lovely?
- 1:15Speaker 4: Yeah? Yeah?
- 1:16Speaker 3: Look man, you got the tank top on, but you
- 1:18Speaker 3: still got the gold chain.
- 1:20Speaker 4: It's it's I'm I feel like I'm like rocking that
- 1:22Speaker 4: Tony soprano vibe right now.
- 1:25Speaker 3: It's fucking hot, dude. Yeah, So, like, how many how
- 1:29Speaker 3: many hours are you away from like from Jersey?
- 1:33Speaker 2: Oh?
- 1:34Speaker 4: Man, hold on, let's let's figure this out right now.
- 1:38Speaker 3: You're probably because you went to monster Mania before.
- 1:41Speaker 4: I did, and that was that was a pretty reasonable
- 1:44Speaker 4: fight going out there.
- 1:48Speaker 3: I'm curious that that. I'm curious of the drive. Let's see,
- 1:54Speaker 3: well why you do that. This is our after hours episode.
- 1:58Speaker 3: We do these monthly and it's kind of a physical
- 2:00Speaker 3: media spotlight we're gonna be. This is much like less structured,
- 2:05Speaker 3: more of us just hanging out talking about a couple
- 2:08Speaker 3: titles we've been watching on physical media and kind of
- 2:10Speaker 3: talk about some physical media based stuff. I always love
- 2:14Speaker 3: these because I don't feel the pressure of a regular episode.
- 2:19Speaker 3: I don't know if you feel that same way or.
- 2:20Speaker 4: Not, honestly, Yeah, these are these episodes are nice because
- 2:24Speaker 4: it's more of us just really hanging out a little
- 2:27Speaker 4: bit more casual. We're able to catch up talk about
- 2:29Speaker 4: some of our recent watches or you know, new movies
- 2:34Speaker 4: that we picked up. Just an update. It's ten to
- 2:38Speaker 4: eleven hours for me to drive out there. Not doing
- 2:42Speaker 4: the drive, I'll do the flight.
- 2:44Speaker 3: So ten hour drive, that's like an hour and a
- 2:46Speaker 3: half flight.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Right, Yes, it saves me a lot of time going
- 2:50Speaker 4: out there.
- 2:50Speaker 3: I'm gonna have to fly, dude, there's that That ticket
- 2:53Speaker 3: better be like thirty bucks.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Oh, it's it's a quick flight. You know. It's even
- 2:58Speaker 4: quicker when I have gone into conventions in Chicago and
- 3:02Speaker 4: it's like it feels like you're on the plane for
- 3:04Speaker 4: like a half hour tops.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Oh, they can take off by the time you reach out,
- 3:10Speaker 3: you're coming right back down.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Yeah, you're you're barely breaking into a movie at that point.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Oh, man, that's fun. I'm gonna have to come out
- 3:18Speaker 3: and I'm gonna have to come out and see you guys. Man,
- 3:20Speaker 3: you guys can come out here whatever. Sometimes soon, Man,
- 3:23Speaker 3: we've got to make that happen. But today we're here,
- 3:26Speaker 3: we're talking about physical media. There's been a bunch of
- 3:29Speaker 3: stuff going on.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Man.
- 3:30Speaker 3: I definitely think more than ever. I think we have
- 3:33Speaker 3: more than enough like discussion points to to do a
- 3:39Speaker 3: physical media based episode than ever before. The sheer volume
- 3:43Speaker 3: of things that are coming out is overwhelming, to say
- 3:48Speaker 3: the least.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Understatement.
- 3:51Speaker 3: It's it's insane, dude. And I mean it's funny because
- 3:55Speaker 3: over the last year, I feel like I've seen less
- 3:57Speaker 3: and less of the physical media is dead are I
- 4:00Speaker 3: think people were kind of realizing, like, yeah, I went
- 4:03Speaker 3: to Walmart today and bought the Monkey, and the physical
- 4:07Speaker 3: media section at my Walmart was booming. There was so
- 4:11Speaker 3: much stuff there, So I think we're we're in a
- 4:13Speaker 3: good place right now.
- 4:14Speaker 4: It's nice to see that, though, especially when I feel
- 4:17Speaker 4: like for a long time there you would go to
- 4:20Speaker 4: Walmart unfortunately best by us to be an option, but
- 4:24Speaker 4: you go to Walmart and it was like slim pickings,
- 4:27Speaker 4: like there was next to nothing there. Or remember when
- 4:31Speaker 4: they first started rolling out the steel books and just
- 4:33Speaker 4: it was cool to see like that second lease of
- 4:36Speaker 4: life when it came to physical media.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, and big shout out to Neon. I got
- 4:42Speaker 3: the Monkey on blue ray. It was only eighteen ninety nine,
- 4:46Speaker 3: which a way very refreshed. I think the four K
- 4:48Speaker 3: was twenty five. I didn't feel the need to get
- 4:51Speaker 3: the four K, but yeah, under twenty bucks for a
- 4:53Speaker 3: new release felt very good.
- 4:55Speaker 4: You weren't trying to shell out for the Steel Book.
- 4:58Speaker 3: I didn't see the Steel Book at Walmart.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Oh no, no, I think it's it's I know it's
- 5:02Speaker 4: available online, but I just felt like it was I
- 5:06Speaker 4: don't know, I don't know any stomachetting that bro.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Then you have you have four K price, which is
- 5:11Speaker 3: minimum twenty five, and then you have like twenty five
- 5:13Speaker 3: dollars because it's wrapped in steel.
- 5:15Speaker 4: Of course.
- 5:16Speaker 3: So I just got in today something I'm very excited
- 5:21Speaker 3: about from Umbrella. I got the new Extremity Collection Volume one. Uh.
- 5:27Speaker 3: This is really cool because it's a collection of kind
- 5:32Speaker 3: of the new wave French horror films that came out
- 5:35Speaker 3: of the early two thousands. They just announced volume two.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Of course after I bought. They just announced volume one.
- 5:42Speaker 3: People are just receiving theirs and they already announced it
- 5:45Speaker 3: as part of their October.
- 5:46Speaker 4: It's good timing, yeah it is.
- 5:49Speaker 3: But Volume one here is four movies. I got just
- 5:52Speaker 3: a standard edition, so no booklet or anything. But there's
- 5:56Speaker 3: a bunch of new audio commentaries, new video essays, all
- 6:00Speaker 3: kinds of new stuff that really kind of upped the
- 6:04Speaker 3: value for me. Sorry I'm looking outside because says the
- 6:07Speaker 3: storm it's ass off every time we record, man, there's
- 6:10Speaker 3: a storm. Yeah, but in this set they have a
- 6:15Speaker 3: Blu Ray of High Tension from Alexander Aja. Great, yeah, dude,
- 6:20Speaker 3: I already have that from second site, but this comes
- 6:22Speaker 3: with a new audio commentary. In this set, you also
- 6:26Speaker 3: have Anatomy of Hell, which is one I had never
- 6:28Speaker 3: even heard of before buying this set. And then you
- 6:31Speaker 3: get two of I would say the most notorious of
- 6:36Speaker 3: the bunch, which is Martyrs and Frontiers on Blu Ray,
- 6:41Speaker 3: and both of those are incredibly tough watches, even for
- 6:44Speaker 3: people like me who can withstand, you know, quite the
- 6:49Speaker 3: the the experience. Those movies are are rough, rough set throughs.
- 6:54Speaker 4: I feel like those are some heavy hitters that they
- 6:56Speaker 4: had for volume one.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, Volume two is relatively unknown, except for In
- 7:04Speaker 3: My Skin, which is getting a which just got to
- 7:07Speaker 3: release from Severn. So that's in volume two.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Chris, you're selling me on both these box sets. You yeah,
- 7:15Speaker 4: oh man?
- 7:17Speaker 3: What about you? Man, anything that you've picked up that
- 7:19Speaker 3: you haven't been able to watch yet?
- 7:21Speaker 4: So I just got in from the movie Room Dance
- 7:25Speaker 4: or Die Nice super pumped for this. Uh. Terror Vision
- 7:29Speaker 4: has been knocking it out of the park with their
- 7:33Speaker 4: like the what would you consider I'm like the like
- 7:36Speaker 4: the hard slip covers that they have for each of
- 7:38Speaker 4: their releases. So they started with the w NUF special
- 7:43Speaker 4: and ever since then they've been or i should say
- 7:47Speaker 4: frog Man and WNUF past that point, then they started
- 7:51Speaker 4: releasing a lot of these limited edition releases with the
- 7:54Speaker 4: hard slip cover. And yeah, it's it's super pump that
- 8:00Speaker 4: this is finally here. I'm excited to dive into this.
- 8:03Speaker 4: I love these more obscure eighties gems, especially when it
- 8:06Speaker 4: comes to horror, and I don't know, based on presentation,
- 8:11Speaker 4: this looks phenomenal. I've heard nothing but good things about
- 8:14Speaker 4: this movie, so that's definitely on my watch list for
- 8:18Speaker 4: the next couple of nights.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Perfect segue too. So very proud to announce that our
- 8:24Speaker 3: after hour segment is officially going to be sponsored by
- 8:28Speaker 3: The Movie Room, and it's a company that I'm incredibly
- 8:32Speaker 3: proud to be partnered with. I know, myself, along with
- 8:36Speaker 3: a few of our friends in our group, have been
- 8:38Speaker 3: brand partners with them for some time now, and it's
- 8:43Speaker 3: been the only place I've been ordering movies from. And
- 8:49Speaker 3: what's incredible about the Movie Room is that it's a
- 8:51Speaker 3: husband and a wife. It's Mike and Dev They're a
- 8:54Speaker 3: beautiful couple. They were collectors that pretty much the decision
- 9:00Speaker 3: of like why can't we sell you know, they were
- 9:03Speaker 3: buying from Diabolic, from Orbit, buying to those places. They
- 9:06Speaker 3: were like why can't we do this? And they recently
- 9:10Speaker 3: were able to quit their full time jobs to do
- 9:12Speaker 3: this full time.
- 9:13Speaker 4: That's incredible.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Yeah, which is so so awesome man, And I can't
- 9:17Speaker 3: thank them enough for everything that they've done. I think
- 9:19Speaker 3: for the community you have, you know, have great experiences
- 9:23Speaker 3: with them. You know, people that aren't partners with them
- 9:27Speaker 3: have had nothing but great experiences. The packaging is phenomenal.
- 9:31Speaker 3: It's genuinely like your US collectors are buying stuff from collectors,
- 9:38Speaker 3: so the packaging is out of this world. Now they
- 9:42Speaker 3: have a new real rewards program that's free. People are
- 9:45Speaker 3: getting on board with that. Are getting a lot of
- 9:47Speaker 3: return from the customers, not not the movie the customers,
- 9:49Speaker 3: you're getting a lot of.
- 9:50Speaker 4: Return from I was really excited about that.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Yeah, super cool man, you know, and I know, like
- 9:57Speaker 3: there's still gonna be stuff that I'll get from Diabolic,
- 9:59Speaker 3: still stuff I'll get from Orbit, but the movie room
- 10:02Speaker 3: is a company that I'm incredibly proud to support always
- 10:08Speaker 3: same and doing our part with them as far as
- 10:13Speaker 3: being able to just talk about them in any way
- 10:14Speaker 3: that we can and kind of send some people to
- 10:16Speaker 3: them is incredible. So right now we don't have a
- 10:22Speaker 3: code or anything to give the people. We will, but
- 10:25Speaker 3: if you head on over to the movieroom dot com,
- 10:27Speaker 3: they have a giant sale going on. If there's only
- 10:29Speaker 3: a couple of days left, they're doing fifteen and twenty
- 10:31Speaker 3: five percent off a whole bunch of titles as well
- 10:33Speaker 3: as a bunch of brand new pre orders up there.
- 10:36Speaker 3: All the new Vinegar Syndrome stuff, brand new second site
- 10:38Speaker 3: titles all up for preorder now. So if you're listening
- 10:43Speaker 3: and you're like, hey, man, I can pick up some
- 10:44Speaker 3: of that stuff, head over to movieroom dot com. Support
- 10:46Speaker 3: a small business. They're doing incredible work. I promise you
- 10:50Speaker 3: you're not going to be disappointed, because I think most
- 10:53Speaker 3: of the stack I have here is from them.
- 10:55Speaker 4: I swear there was a lot of movies in there
- 10:57Speaker 4: that I was surprised were even in the twenty five
- 11:01Speaker 4: percent off sale. Some great titles in there.
- 11:04Speaker 3: Dude, absurd and Anthropophagist eighty eight film or from you
- 11:07Speaker 3: know me? Yeah, twenty five off dude, which, how can
- 11:11Speaker 3: you turn that down?
- 11:12Speaker 4: That's a that's a great I think I saw a
- 11:14Speaker 4: Blade in the Dark. That's another great one.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Twenty five percent off man, Yeah, dude, some great stuff
- 11:20Speaker 3: is part of that sale. And twenty five percent is
- 11:23Speaker 3: huge when you're paying nearly fifty dollars for a title
- 11:26Speaker 3: regular price. And we didn't even we didn't even mention
- 11:29Speaker 3: either any two titles that you pick up besides something
- 11:32Speaker 3: that's like incredibly huge, like oversized. Yeah, any two titleship
- 11:36Speaker 3: for free, So get twenty five percent off each, get
- 11:39Speaker 3: two titles and then just they'll ship for free. You
- 11:41Speaker 3: don't got to pay the you know, six dollars shipping.
- 11:44Speaker 4: And if you run into anything, I feel like they're very,
- 11:46Speaker 4: very responsive, they get back to right away. They've they've
- 11:50Speaker 4: been great. I have nothing but positive things say about
- 11:53Speaker 4: my experiences with them. Yeah.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Yeah. Also on their website too, they have a section
- 11:58Speaker 3: called Partner's Picks. I have a I have a section
- 12:02Speaker 3: in that Beyond the Grave Media. Jake from Steel Book
- 12:04Speaker 3: Obsessed Frank's Media and Reviews. Jordan from the movie Den
- 12:08Speaker 3: we all have sections in there that show things that
- 12:11Speaker 3: we've bought, things that we recommend to people, So you
- 12:13Speaker 3: can go in and kind of see our taste on display,
- 12:16Speaker 3: and you can pick up stuff that we've also picked
- 12:18Speaker 3: up as well, which is really cool. So yeah, just
- 12:21Speaker 3: head on over to movieroom dot com check them out.
- 12:25Speaker 3: Very proud to have them as a sponsor on the show.
- 12:27Speaker 3: And I think it's time to talk about some some
- 12:30Speaker 3: physical media, man, I will say right now, So I
- 12:33Speaker 3: looked at my phone. It's like a severe thunderstorm warning
- 12:36Speaker 3: and it's it's like, you know when it turns that
- 12:39Speaker 3: grayish green outside, like loving it right now. I got
- 12:43Speaker 3: my window wide open right now, dude.
- 12:45Speaker 4: Yeah, oh it's a vibe.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Yeah, dude, I love this, man, So why don't you
- 12:51Speaker 3: kick us off man with with with let's spotlight some
- 12:54Speaker 3: some physical media you've been watching all right?
- 12:57Speaker 4: Well, one label that I've been really closely watching with
- 13:01Speaker 4: their releases that they've been putting out is One on
- 13:04Speaker 4: One Films. Oh yeah, so I've been steadily picking up
- 13:08Speaker 4: more and more titles from them, and the movie that
- 13:11Speaker 4: I wanted to talk about, which this is a really
- 13:14Speaker 4: really nice release. Transers so released in nineteen eighty four.
- 13:21Speaker 4: This is released under Empire Pictures, so if you're a
- 13:26Speaker 4: fan of Empire Pictures Full Moon features, these are all
- 13:33Speaker 4: really really fun movies to revisit, and this one's no exception.
- 13:38Speaker 4: But the thing that I like most about it was
- 13:41Speaker 4: there was just not only was the transfer incredible, there
- 13:47Speaker 4: was a big, big upbrade I felt like between the
- 13:50Speaker 4: Bluery release and this Yep yep. So. So with this
- 13:56Speaker 4: there was some brand new extras that were included in
- 13:59Speaker 4: on this release. So there's a new interview with Charles Band,
- 14:05Speaker 4: a new interview with Chris Alexander as well as an
- 14:08Speaker 4: interview with Ted Nicolau as well, so three new interviews
- 14:15Speaker 4: in there, and then they also have some archive content
- 14:17Speaker 4: as well as so commentary with Charles Band and Tim Thomerson.
- 14:22Speaker 4: There's a short film on there, and then a video
- 14:25Speaker 4: essay making up featurette, some trailers and then archival interviews
- 14:30Speaker 4: stills that are included in on that release. So they
- 14:33Speaker 4: definitely went all out on this. It's very exciting to
- 14:36Speaker 4: see that a lot of these Full Moon movies are
- 14:40Speaker 4: getting I think the love that they finally deserve, and
- 14:44Speaker 4: looks like one on one Films is steadily, you know,
- 14:48Speaker 4: releasing more and more of these movies, which I don't know,
- 14:50Speaker 4: it's just it's it's cool to see them get the
- 14:52Speaker 4: boutique treatment.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Yeah. I just got my copy of Castle Freak in
- 14:58Speaker 3: oh yeah from them, which, Yeah, very excited to dive
- 15:02Speaker 3: into that. In your I didn't really grow up a
- 15:06Speaker 3: Full Moon Empire guy, that's some. There's there's a lot
- 15:10Speaker 3: of big titles I'm still getting into, like Subspecies and
- 15:14Speaker 3: puppet Master. I'm a very loose fan of Transfers is
- 15:17Speaker 3: one that I remember seeing years ago, not anywhere soon
- 15:23Speaker 3: enough that I kind of remember a lot of it.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Where do you put transfer Transfer? Was a Transfers Transfers
- 15:30Speaker 3: in your Empire Full Moon like franchise ranking, because I
- 15:35Speaker 3: think there's a bunch of them.
- 15:36Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, So I would say I can't really speak
- 15:39Speaker 4: on the sequels as much, but for the first one,
- 15:43Speaker 4: I feel like that that I would consider that probably
- 15:46Speaker 4: in like the the top tier as far as you know,
- 15:50Speaker 4: out of like that umbrella of films. I also always read,
- 15:54Speaker 4: I mean you were talking about the pup Master movies.
- 15:56Speaker 4: I feel like that those are the more like beloved
- 15:59Speaker 4: ones or more known films that they've released. I think
- 16:02Speaker 4: the Subspecies movies are are excellent, and then they have
- 16:07Speaker 4: like The Pit and the Pendulum is really good. Yeah, Castle, Frank,
- 16:11Speaker 4: you were talking about that one. That's another favorite of buying.
- 16:14Speaker 4: So those are the ones like I would put transfers
- 16:17Speaker 4: in there, like at least for the first one. It's
- 16:19Speaker 4: a really good movie and you're into like sci fi
- 16:22Speaker 4: kind of thriller type movies. I think this is definitely
- 16:26Speaker 4: worth checking out. It's a stacked release.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Yeah, and there's also a little booklet because that's part
- 16:31Speaker 3: of their black label.
- 16:32Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, so it's got this right here.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Oh, dude's awesome.
- 16:44Speaker 4: Yeah. So, but it's just it's a quick read, nothing
- 16:50Speaker 4: too crazy, honestly.
- 16:51Speaker 3: So I'll be honest with you, we were talking about
- 16:55Speaker 3: this earlier. I would rather give me a small booklet
- 16:58Speaker 3: with like one or two good reads in it over
- 17:03Speaker 3: a big booklet that's kind of just a bunch of nonsense.
- 17:08Speaker 4: Yeah, And it's it's cool to see that they're definitely,
- 17:12Speaker 4: you know, with this release, it definitely seems that they're
- 17:14Speaker 4: putting a lot of like attention to the details in it.
- 17:17Speaker 4: So I'm just really happy to finally have that in
- 17:20Speaker 4: the collection amongst some other Empire pictures and in Full
- 17:24Speaker 4: Moon titles, and yeah, yeah, I thought overall it was
- 17:29Speaker 4: a really really great four K.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's worth mentioning as well that you know
- 17:34Speaker 3: Full Moon is still doing releasing or releases here in
- 17:38Speaker 3: the US. One on one Films is a UK label,
- 17:42Speaker 3: so clearly they're made for the UK market. Four k's
- 17:45Speaker 3: are region free, yes, so anybody can pick that up.
- 17:49Speaker 3: I know Castle Freak is region be locked, I think
- 17:53Speaker 3: because that's only a Blu ray, but it might be
- 17:55Speaker 3: region free. I don't I have to double check. Yeah, dude,
- 18:00Speaker 3: Transwers is an awesome pickup. Dude, I really love that
- 18:03Speaker 3: One on one Film's black label line.
- 18:06Speaker 4: They've got some good ones that they're that they've got
- 18:10Speaker 4: slated coming up here. I mean, got Castle Freak. Tourist
- 18:15Speaker 4: Trap is another one that I'm really excited about. So
- 18:18Speaker 4: I'm curious to see what you know, what they have
- 18:19Speaker 4: on the horizon.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, man, great first choice.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, what do you got? Chris? Uh So?
- 18:27Speaker 3: I actually, of my four picks, I only have two
- 18:30Speaker 3: labels between these, but I want to start with a
- 18:33Speaker 3: slightly older one. This one's a couple of years old now,
- 18:35Speaker 3: but I finally tapped into it. And this is from
- 18:38Speaker 3: Vinegar Syndrome. This is their four K of the Incredible
- 18:41Speaker 3: Melting Man from nineteen seventy seven. I don't know, are
- 18:44Speaker 3: you familiar with this one at all?
- 18:47Speaker 4: Not really?
- 18:48Speaker 3: Okay, okay, So this was one that my my wife
- 18:54Speaker 3: remembers seeing when she was young, but it was her brothers,
- 18:56Speaker 3: my my in laws that really loved this movie. This
- 19:00Speaker 3: was produced by Orion Pictures, which is always a fun
- 19:04Speaker 3: label to go back and watch some of the.
- 19:06Speaker 4: Stuff they play.
- 19:08Speaker 3: This it's it's a story about an astronaut who attempts
- 19:12Speaker 3: to go fly. They attempted to go land on the
- 19:17Speaker 3: Rings of Saturn? Is it or Venus?
- 19:22Speaker 1: It did?
- 19:22Speaker 3: It's something, it's something ridiculous. Let me see if I
- 19:25Speaker 3: can read this year. Oh yeah, they're first ever voyage
- 19:28Speaker 3: to the Rings of Saturn.
- 19:31Speaker 4: The journey as you do, Yeah, you do.
- 19:37Speaker 3: There's a crazy phenomenon where there's some sort of flare
- 19:41Speaker 3: that comes off the planet. Only one of the astronauts
- 19:44Speaker 3: survive and essentially he wakes up in the hospital and
- 19:51Speaker 3: he's melting is and he escapes and it flees into
- 19:57Speaker 3: this town and he's being chased down by a doctor
- 20:01Speaker 3: and an army general. And that's like as as best
- 20:06Speaker 3: I feel like I can describe the plot.
- 20:08Speaker 4: What was it? Was this the first time watch for you?
- 20:11Speaker 4: Or had you seen this film? No?
- 20:12Speaker 3: I knew nothing.
- 20:13Speaker 4: My way.
- 20:14Speaker 3: I remember when this came out. My wife was like,
- 20:17Speaker 3: oh shit, incredible melting man. My brothers loved that movie,
- 20:19Speaker 3: and I bought it because you know, I thought she
- 20:22Speaker 3: would she would be into it, and then it just
- 20:25Speaker 3: kind of sat on the shelf for a little bit.
- 20:28Speaker 3: But I have to tell you, dude, I had so
- 20:31Speaker 3: much fun with this. Uh. The the the effects here
- 20:35Speaker 3: are done by Rick Baker, okay, and his assistance on
- 20:40Speaker 3: this movie. One of his assistants on this movie were
- 20:42Speaker 3: was Rob Boutine a couple of years before he went
- 20:45Speaker 3: to go do the thing.
- 20:47Speaker 4: No way, yeah, yeah, okay, I didn't know that.
- 20:50Speaker 3: Yeah. So you have Rob Boutine and Rick Baker too,
- 20:53Speaker 3: you know. Now legends in the makeup industry, you know,
- 20:58Speaker 3: have their hands in this and there there's some really
- 21:01Speaker 3: really gross stuff and it's funny because then there's an
- 21:04Speaker 3: interview with Rick Baker and the Bonus Features where he
- 21:06Speaker 3: talks about how originally, you know, like you would think
- 21:10Speaker 3: he's supposed to gradually melt more as a movie goes on,
- 21:13Speaker 3: but they didn't really have the budget to do it properly,
- 21:16Speaker 3: so he for most of the movie. And this is
- 21:18Speaker 3: his quote. He says, for most of the movie, he's
- 21:20Speaker 3: just the oopy, gloopy man. And like, you know, it's
- 21:25Speaker 3: got that weird seventies I think I closest related to
- 21:28Speaker 3: like it's kind of got a little bit of the
- 21:30Speaker 3: vibes of like town that dreaded sundown. Okay, there's a
- 21:36Speaker 3: there's a moment when the doctor is like on the
- 21:38Speaker 3: trail and he's using a radiation detector to follow him,
- 21:43Speaker 3: and he comes across a bush and in the bush
- 21:46Speaker 3: is like flesh and an ear and it doesn't show
- 21:50Speaker 3: the characters say it, but he goes like, oh his
- 21:53Speaker 3: ear unintentionally funny. Yeah, but there's some really nasty effects
- 22:00Speaker 3: in it. Man. There's a great beheading. And I will
- 22:05Speaker 3: say there at the end of the movie, there is
- 22:08Speaker 3: an electrocution. Somebody gets thrown over the edge of a
- 22:11Speaker 3: balcony onto like high high energy power lines.
- 22:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:16Speaker 3: I have no idea how they did it, dude. It's
- 22:18Speaker 3: incredibly shocking. It is incredibly realistic. I mean, like to
- 22:24Speaker 3: the point where I I I'm having fun with the
- 22:29Speaker 3: movie and I'm enjoying it, and at that moment, it
- 22:30Speaker 3: actually really grossed me out because I just felt like
- 22:35Speaker 3: I had watched this happened to somebody. That's how real
- 22:39Speaker 3: it was shown. I mean, sparks flying like it wasn't
- 22:42Speaker 3: some typical movie electrocution. It was out of control.
- 22:45Speaker 4: That's high praise, especially bothers.
- 22:48Speaker 3: You, Oh my god, dude, what it's like certain You know,
- 22:51Speaker 3: I hate electricity. That's why I'm not an electrician. Y uh,
- 22:56Speaker 3: And it it really bothered me. Man. Just I'll try
- 22:59Speaker 3: to find a YouTube clip and send it to you.
- 23:01Speaker 3: It's a really it's really impressive. When you look at
- 23:04Speaker 3: kind of the scale of the electrocution, You're like, holy shit, dude,
- 23:08Speaker 3: it's really.
- 23:10Speaker 4: Is it like Faces of Death electrocution that style?
- 23:13Speaker 3: Bro, It's it's wild, dude, it's wild. If you've seen
- 23:18Speaker 3: the movie, then you because it's when I was reading
- 23:21Speaker 3: about the movie that was kind of one of the
- 23:22Speaker 3: big key scenes that everyone remembers, was like, oh, no electrocution,
- 23:27Speaker 3: but this four K looked incredible. It looked absolutely fantastic,
- 23:32Speaker 3: a ton of fun with the movie. It's not perfect,
- 23:34Speaker 3: but whatever. A couple of really great interviews on this
- 23:37Speaker 3: disc as well, particularly the one with Rick Baker. It's
- 23:41Speaker 3: with Rick Baker and I'm trying to remember right now,
- 23:48Speaker 3: interview Future at with William Sackson special effects Artistrick Baker.
- 23:51Speaker 3: There is there is an interview on here with William Sackson, director,
- 23:55Speaker 3: but it's kind of all over the place and a
- 23:57Speaker 3: little silly, so I didn't love it. But this one
- 24:01Speaker 3: is a high praise for me. Man, The incredible Melting
- 24:04Speaker 3: Man is awesome.
- 24:06Speaker 4: And you're selling me on this one, dude, So it
- 24:09Speaker 4: sounds right up my alley, bro.
- 24:10Speaker 3: It's so much I'm telling you, man, it's like, if
- 24:14Speaker 3: you can get down with that that kind of silly
- 24:17Speaker 3: vibe of the Town that Dreaded Sundown, then you can
- 24:21Speaker 3: get down with with this, dude. This is This is
- 24:23Speaker 3: grosser and it's a lot not as silly as Town
- 24:31Speaker 3: that Dreaded Sundown, but you'll you'll find the comparisons. It's
- 24:34Speaker 3: something about that that late seventies vibe that just kind
- 24:37Speaker 3: of comes.
- 24:38Speaker 4: Through, you know, very special.
- 24:40Speaker 3: What else you got, man, I'm curious to see what
- 24:42Speaker 3: we're going to talk about.
- 24:44Speaker 4: Well, I I ended up upgrading Okay, So at one
- 24:51Speaker 4: point I had the screen Factory release, but this is
- 24:54Speaker 4: a movie that I feel like deserves a little bit
- 24:58Speaker 4: more of a premium look. Shelf okay, and I finally
- 25:02Speaker 4: made the jump and picked up the four K. Candy Man,
- 25:06Speaker 4: I have that, dude so good. This looks better in person.
- 25:12Speaker 4: I kept trying to tell myself there was no need
- 25:15Speaker 4: for this, and you know, I already had the four K,
- 25:18Speaker 4: so you know what difference is it gonna make? But
- 25:22Speaker 4: I'm not gonna lie. Arrow went all out on this one.
- 25:26Speaker 4: I know that the transfer is the same for this release,
- 25:32Speaker 4: but I mean, for a movie that's so iconic, I
- 25:34Speaker 4: just felt like it needed something a little bit more
- 25:37Speaker 4: premium feeling, and this definitely delivered. So with this release,
- 25:45Speaker 4: there there's a handful of additional like special features that
- 25:52Speaker 4: were included in on here. So you have dual cuts
- 25:56Speaker 4: of the film, theatrical and unrated new Adobe at most
- 26:01Speaker 4: track commentary actually a couple of commentaries on this, and
- 26:07Speaker 4: then it also features the Blu Ray release of this
- 26:10Speaker 4: as well. Also includes on top of that, there's a
- 26:14Speaker 4: forty page hardcovers, storyboard book, perfectly bound booklet with essays,
- 26:21Speaker 4: the lobby cards and as always which I appreciate, the
- 26:25Speaker 4: reversible like the slip cover art, which is always cool.
- 26:30Speaker 4: And I don't know, I mean, this movie is just
- 26:33Speaker 4: so iconic. It was one that I grew up on
- 26:36Speaker 4: and will always have a very special place to me
- 26:39Speaker 4: as far as like nineties horror movies go. What did
- 26:43Speaker 4: you think of this release? You've obviously, I mean, you
- 26:46Speaker 4: own it and you've seen it before. How did this
- 26:48Speaker 4: stack up for you?
- 26:50Speaker 3: It looks it looks phenomenal, man, I really like I
- 26:54Speaker 3: love the artwork on the hard box. Oh yeah, they
- 26:58Speaker 3: arrow did that same box set on Blu ray years ago,
- 27:03Speaker 3: and then they just put the new transfer on and
- 27:06Speaker 3: released it on four K. I thought it looks fantastic.
- 27:11Speaker 3: Candy Man is a movie to me that gets it's
- 27:13Speaker 3: like fine wine, you know. And unfortunately, now we're living
- 27:16Speaker 3: in a post Tony Todd world and there's a lot
- 27:20Speaker 3: of reassessments of his performances going on, which should you know,
- 27:24Speaker 3: it's unfortunate that these reassessments don't happen when people are
- 27:27Speaker 3: still alive. But you know, and I think that movie
- 27:30Speaker 3: is more important than ever. You know what's funny, dude,
- 27:37Speaker 3: I when Tony Todd died, I did a double feature
- 27:41Speaker 3: and I watched the Bernard Rose Candy Man the Nineties one,
- 27:44Speaker 3: and then I watched the Nia da Costa sequel, which
- 27:49Speaker 3: which I think is just as good. Just to be clear,
- 27:53Speaker 3: I think they're both just as good. Both of those
- 27:55Speaker 3: movies are like arresting, like there's this sense of dread,
- 28:03Speaker 3: but they're made so elegantly man like them like the
- 28:08Speaker 3: fact that they actually went to you know, Cabrini Green
- 28:13Speaker 3: and centered this around a real place and they, dude,
- 28:16Speaker 3: they were filming this like surrounded by actual gangs that
- 28:20Speaker 3: had nothing to do with the production that were just
- 28:23Speaker 3: hanging out in the area, and they had to have
- 28:25Speaker 3: police on on zet And it's that movie's timeless, man,
- 28:30Speaker 3: it just gets better with age.
- 28:33Speaker 4: It's it's a movie that I find it so interesting
- 28:37Speaker 4: on rewatch, just how perfectly blends the gothic horror aspect
- 28:43Speaker 4: of the film while weaving in the urban legend aspect
- 28:47Speaker 4: of it. And it's I think with Tony Todd's performance
- 28:53Speaker 4: in this movie, I couldn't imagine anyone else taking on
- 28:57Speaker 4: playing Candy Man, I just don't think it would carry
- 29:01Speaker 4: the same weight. And to see such a beloved movie
- 29:05Speaker 4: get such a gorgeous release and there's just so much
- 29:10Speaker 4: love and thought that was put into this. It just
- 29:12Speaker 4: makes me so happy to have this in my collection.
- 29:15Speaker 4: And I just feel like it's you know, if anyone listening,
- 29:19Speaker 4: if you do get the opportunity to get out there
- 29:21Speaker 4: and and you know you're able to find it, it's
- 29:23Speaker 4: definitely definitely worth That's that's a high recommendation for me.
- 29:26Speaker 3: Yeah, dude. The Phillip Glass score is like such a
- 29:31Speaker 3: haunting score that stands up outside of the movie like
- 29:35Speaker 3: if yes, put it on.
- 29:37Speaker 4: But you and you and I always talk about that
- 29:39Speaker 4: the importance of like, you know, soundtracks and just how
- 29:44Speaker 4: there's just so many iconic especially like in the horror
- 29:47Speaker 4: movies that we love. But there's just so many iconic
- 29:49Speaker 4: soundtracks that you can even listen to even outside of
- 29:52Speaker 4: of you know, watching the film.
- 29:54Speaker 3: Yeah, and that that score is not long. I think
- 29:57Speaker 3: it's like eight tracks, but it's incredibly effective. I just
- 30:00Speaker 3: the do do do Do Do Do do? Like little
- 30:03Speaker 3: tone that runs, Oh, it's so so good man. It's
- 30:07Speaker 3: interesting too, because I'm waiting for a really good release
- 30:09Speaker 3: of the Nia DaCosta candy Man. I would love to
- 30:12Speaker 3: get just a nicer presentation of that outside of the studio,
- 30:16Speaker 3: but you know, the not to go on like a
- 30:20Speaker 3: Candyman tangent. But that sequel does a.
- 30:22Speaker 4: Really good job and I always welcome it.
- 30:24Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I mean that sequel does a really good
- 30:27Speaker 3: job at capturing the spirit, and I love when you
- 30:31Speaker 3: can expand on the story that doesn't negate the original
- 30:36Speaker 3: and in the sequel, when they when in a sequel
- 30:39Speaker 3: when they say, hey, candy Man is an idea, it's
- 30:43Speaker 3: a presence. It doesn't have to be a singular person.
- 30:49Speaker 3: You know, Tony Todd is the original candy Man, and
- 30:52Speaker 3: the sequel says that anybody can become candy Man, anybody
- 30:56Speaker 3: who's unfortunate enough to be in the city situation. That's
- 31:00Speaker 3: kind of what happens in that But that movie shows
- 31:04Speaker 3: so much respect by having Tony Todd show up at
- 31:06Speaker 3: the end and he just does the tell everyone and
- 31:10Speaker 3: I remember, dude still to day gives me chills. When
- 31:13Speaker 3: that camera pans away from the violence of the of
- 31:16Speaker 3: what happened to the police cars, it comes around the
- 31:20Speaker 3: corner and you see all the bees and you have
- 31:22Speaker 3: Tony Todd poked through and yeah, it's incredible, man. I
- 31:25Speaker 3: mean still to stay that parking garage scene, you know,
- 31:28Speaker 3: the be my victim.
- 31:30Speaker 4: Yeah. Oh, it feels like after that scene occurs, that
- 31:38Speaker 4: that movie has a hold on you and it's just
- 31:41Speaker 4: dragging you down with just how everything begins to spiral
- 31:46Speaker 4: out of control. And I always remember that movie. And
- 31:51Speaker 4: we were talking about the puppet Master movies earlier, but
- 31:54Speaker 4: I always remember a Candy Man and those movies always
- 31:57Speaker 4: finding somehow I always ended up see them on TV
- 32:00Speaker 4: when I was younger, and it's, uh, I don't know,
- 32:04Speaker 4: it's it's I have a lot of fun memories with
- 32:06Speaker 4: this movie. And I feel very fortunate that I was
- 32:08Speaker 4: able to say Tony Todd a couple of years back.
- 32:11Speaker 4: So it's unfortunate, but I feel like that this is
- 32:14Speaker 4: like the best way to remember his legacy.
- 32:17Speaker 3: Well, let's make sure that one day we cover Candy
- 32:20Speaker 3: Man on here.
- 32:21Speaker 4: Oh, absolutely, Terry Dive. We have absolutely.
- 32:25Speaker 3: Good pick Man. I love that. I love that release.
- 32:27Speaker 4: Very good pick which A goat, Chris.
- 32:30Speaker 3: For my second choice, I'm gonna go with second site.
- 32:33Speaker 3: And let me figure out what year this was from
- 32:36Speaker 3: really faz because I forget. I want to say this
- 32:39Speaker 3: was twenty sixteen. I wish I'm so bad with Yeah,
- 32:45Speaker 3: twenty sixteen, and I'm talking about Jeremy Saunier's green Room.
- 32:52Speaker 4: That's a good one, dude.
- 32:53Speaker 3: I have this on four K from second site. I've
- 32:55Speaker 3: had this for a little while now. I finally took
- 32:57Speaker 3: the like plunge into it and he dove into it.
- 33:03Speaker 3: There's something about this movie that's so incredibly engaging. It's
- 33:13Speaker 3: and I think we've talked about this before in some
- 33:16Speaker 3: other capacity, can remember having this conversation. But green Room
- 33:19Speaker 3: kind of lives in this weird space of time where
- 33:22Speaker 3: it's like it's like before dawn, where it's still dark,
- 33:27Speaker 3: but there's like a little bit of color in this guy,
- 33:30Speaker 3: and it sort of lives there, which makes her a
- 33:35Speaker 3: really interesting visual experience that I think the four K
- 33:37Speaker 3: really stands out. Didn't even talk about the plot. Green
- 33:41Speaker 3: Room is about a kind of old school punk band
- 33:46Speaker 3: who is kind of doing things down and dirty way.
- 33:49Speaker 3: They're not digital, they're not on Facebook, they're not on
- 33:51Speaker 3: social platforms. They're kind of on the road, siphoning gas.
- 33:55Speaker 3: They have no money. They're playing in diners for like
- 33:58Speaker 3: ten bucks, and they get an opportunity for like this
- 34:02Speaker 3: pretty good cover. I think it was two hundred and
- 34:03Speaker 3: fifty dollars. But they have to play at a like
- 34:07Speaker 3: a like a Nazi bar essentially is what it is.
- 34:12Speaker 3: So they show up and uh, the first song they
- 34:15Speaker 3: play is a cover of by the Dead Kennedy's what's
- 34:20Speaker 3: that song called that they play? It's the anti Nazi song.
- 34:27Speaker 4: I'm totally blanking on it.
- 34:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I forget what it's called. But they play, and
- 34:31Speaker 3: it kind of like establishes this mood. But they end
- 34:34Speaker 3: up when they're set is over, they end up witnessing
- 34:39Speaker 3: a murder in the green room and they get locked
- 34:41Speaker 3: in to the green room, and the rest of the
- 34:44Speaker 3: movie is this fight for survival?
- 34:47Speaker 4: Was it? Was it Nazi Punk's fuck Off?
- 34:50Speaker 3: Yes? Not so okay off? Yep?
- 34:52Speaker 4: I couldn't for the life of me, because I've listened
- 34:54Speaker 4: to a little bit of their music, but that was
- 34:56Speaker 4: that was escaping me because I remember that was used
- 34:58Speaker 4: in it. Yep, And yeah, nice the choice.
- 35:02Speaker 3: My favorite part of that scene is that they play
- 35:04Speaker 3: it and then the singer goes thank you, that was
- 35:07Speaker 3: a cover because like, nobody in the crowd is happy
- 35:12Speaker 3: that they just you know, played that.
- 35:14Speaker 4: So before you dive into it with green Room, was
- 35:18Speaker 4: this a movie that you were surprised Second Site ended
- 35:21Speaker 4: up releasing. Do you feel like that that fits with
- 35:23Speaker 4: their catalog of movies they put out.
- 35:27Speaker 3: I think so. I absolutely think so, because green Room
- 35:33Speaker 3: is not as much it's not a traditional horror movie.
- 35:37Speaker 3: It's a thriller. To me, it's it's you know, it's
- 35:40Speaker 3: like thriller is a subgenre of horror, but it's it's
- 35:43Speaker 3: a thriller. I mean, it's a survival film. There's nothing
- 35:46Speaker 3: about it that's scary per se in the traditional sense.
- 35:51Speaker 3: But I think this was a movie kind of begging
- 35:53Speaker 3: for an upgrade. I had a Blu ray that was
- 35:57Speaker 3: from like a Walmart bargain bin that I think I
- 36:00Speaker 3: bought in like twenty seventeen, So it was kind of
- 36:04Speaker 3: begging for an upgrade. And it looks incredible in four K,
- 36:08Speaker 3: like absolutely incredible in four K. There's a wonderful interview
- 36:13Speaker 3: with Jeremy Salln here. There's a there's another interview that
- 36:17Speaker 3: I loved on here, which was called Rocking Out that
- 36:22Speaker 3: was what the composers Brooken Willblair, and then Going Green,
- 36:26Speaker 3: which is a brand new interview with the production designer
- 36:29Speaker 3: Ryan Warren Smith who kind of talks about building this
- 36:33Speaker 3: venue in his research on kind of what these bars
- 36:37Speaker 3: were like and these venues were like. So it's very real,
- 36:42Speaker 3: very dark.
- 36:43Speaker 4: It's yeah, I was gonna say in that whole movie,
- 36:46Speaker 4: I feel like has a very like chaustrophobic feel to it,
- 36:49Speaker 4: with like one thing to start ramping up and you know,
- 36:53Speaker 4: just the tension starts mounting. It's very it's a very
- 36:56Speaker 4: uncomfortable movie to set through. Kind of keeps you on
- 36:58Speaker 4: the edge of your receipt as.
- 37:00Speaker 3: It's like Patrick Stewart puts on an incredible performance as
- 37:04Speaker 3: kind of like the he's the leader of this this
- 37:09Speaker 3: you know, neo Nazi group, but he's so calm and
- 37:11Speaker 3: he's so different from everybody else, And it taps into
- 37:15Speaker 3: like these very real because you know, clearly, I you
- 37:21Speaker 3: know that that's not a thing that any of us support.
- 37:25Speaker 3: That's not a puce to some none of us. So
- 37:28Speaker 3: you go into this movie knowing that your antagonists are
- 37:32Speaker 3: completely trash, right, but the movie never takes a side.
- 37:37Speaker 3: It's it's not telling you that this is good and
- 37:40Speaker 3: this is bad. It's just putting you in the middle
- 37:42Speaker 3: of this situation and letting it unfold. So it's not
- 37:47Speaker 3: taking a political stance. I mean, clearly, it's very satisfying
- 37:50Speaker 3: seeing a neo Nazi, you know, gets shot. It's very
- 37:54Speaker 3: satisfying on film, But the movie's not taking a side
- 37:57Speaker 3: in that. And this is a movie that's rooted in
- 37:59Speaker 3: the punk lifestyle. Jeremy Salnier was in a punk band,
- 38:03Speaker 3: which is anti establishment on all of this, you know,
- 38:08Speaker 3: rebellious attitude coming from punk music. So this the roots
- 38:12Speaker 3: of this movie were born and bred in this lifestyle.
- 38:18Speaker 3: So a lot of it's very real, meaning real to
- 38:23Speaker 3: when they introduced like the Red Laces, who are kind
- 38:25Speaker 3: of like the henchmen, or like the guys that are
- 38:27Speaker 3: willing to sacrifice themselves, sort of belief in all of that.
- 38:32Speaker 3: So it's it's an interesting movie, man because Patrick Stewart
- 38:35Speaker 3: is so different. He doesn't appear to be like one
- 38:37Speaker 3: of them, he doesn't act like one of them, but
- 38:39Speaker 3: he's the proud leader. Even the violence, there's an impact
- 38:45Speaker 3: to the violence in this movie, man, Like there's a
- 38:48Speaker 3: terrifying scene when Antony Elchin rests in peace, when he
- 38:51Speaker 3: reaches his hand out of the door and they attack
- 38:53Speaker 3: him his arm with a blade, and when he pulls
- 38:57Speaker 3: his arm in, it's not a bloody mess. It's a
- 39:00Speaker 3: very realistic looking set of wounds that's just like you're like,
- 39:03Speaker 3: oh God, like really gross man looking. Dude's super gnarly man.
- 39:10Speaker 3: And the whole movie is like that. And I think
- 39:14Speaker 3: this release is perfect because I love the booklet. There's
- 39:17Speaker 3: a bunch of good essays in here about kind of
- 39:20Speaker 3: the realism or like the relationship between punk music and
- 39:26Speaker 3: what's shown in the movie. There's a lot of like
- 39:29Speaker 3: really great reads. It's more of like the history of
- 39:32Speaker 3: punk in the history of anti establishment in film that
- 39:35Speaker 3: I think makes for a great read. Of course, second site,
- 39:37Speaker 3: it's like one hundred and twenty page I call it
- 39:39Speaker 3: a book, not even a booklet. I think this limited
- 39:43Speaker 3: edition is now out of print. I'm on their website
- 39:48Speaker 3: and it is officially out of print, so you're gonna
- 39:50Speaker 3: have to find this through. I think I've seen it
- 39:55Speaker 3: on eBay for like fifty sixty bucks. But yeah, an incredible,
- 40:00Speaker 3: incredible four K, great release, great movie that I feel
- 40:03Speaker 3: like was begging for for some some new attention.
- 40:07Speaker 4: You know, did you initially see this when it came out.
- 40:11Speaker 3: I saw this like two years after. I think, I said,
- 40:13Speaker 3: I found it in a Walmart Bend, okay, because I
- 40:17Speaker 3: think it was a twenty four. It was a twenty four,
- 40:20Speaker 3: one of those like I think it was one of
- 40:22Speaker 3: those labels. I think it was a twenty four right, yes, yes,
- 40:29Speaker 3: it was a twenty four. Yeah. So I found the
- 40:31Speaker 3: Blue Ray in like the the Value Ben and then
- 40:34Speaker 3: I remember bringing it home and it was I remember
- 40:37Speaker 3: reading that it was the director of Blue Ruin and
- 40:39Speaker 3: I was like, oh.
- 40:40Speaker 4: Hell yeah, and that's game over.
- 40:43Speaker 3: I loved it. Yeah, I watched it. I was like, man,
- 40:45Speaker 3: and I saw it. I watched that Blue Ray so
- 40:47Speaker 3: many times. Man, So when this four K came out,
- 40:50Speaker 3: I was it was a moment. It was a one
- 40:52Speaker 3: minute purchase, like I did. I did not. I didn't
- 40:54Speaker 3: look at bonus features. I didn't look at anything. I
- 40:56Speaker 3: was just like yep, by that.
- 40:58Speaker 4: You know, out of all labels, I feel like we
- 41:02Speaker 4: talked about this a lot. Second site is usually their announcements.
- 41:07Speaker 4: Those are the ones that I feel like kind of
- 41:09Speaker 4: draw us in the most when it comes to their
- 41:12Speaker 4: you know, whatever they're planning on releasing. And I remember
- 41:15Speaker 4: when that that was announced that was I was like, okay,
- 41:18Speaker 4: you know that's that's another another solid addition to their collection.
- 41:22Speaker 3: I think it was. I think this was released in
- 41:25Speaker 3: conjunction with Possessor, or was a Possessor in Crimes of
- 41:28Speaker 3: the Future. I remember, because they usually announced one or
- 41:31Speaker 3: two at a time. I think they announced.
- 41:33Speaker 4: Oh, no, you might be right. I think it was
- 41:35Speaker 4: Possessor because I was while you were talking about their release.
- 41:39Speaker 4: I was trying to figure out which was the other
- 41:41Speaker 4: movie that was the coincide when when this one was
- 41:45Speaker 4: put out.
- 41:46Speaker 3: Yeah, it was Possessor, I think, which was another like
- 41:50Speaker 3: minute one purchase. And you know still now like my
- 41:53Speaker 3: preorder is in for Winnevil Lurks, my pre order is
- 41:56Speaker 3: in for the Innkeepers, my preorder is in for the
- 41:59Speaker 3: Pusher t I already have House of the Devil. I
- 42:03Speaker 3: second site is a label. I don't question. I just
- 42:06Speaker 3: whatever they announced. I'm like, well, it looks like I'm upgrading.
- 42:09Speaker 4: That I was. I can't tell you not to get
- 42:12Speaker 4: off topic, but I can't tell you how happy I
- 42:15Speaker 4: was when I saw that they were releasing when Evil Lurks,
- 42:18Speaker 4: because that's a movie that it was a very pleasant
- 42:23Speaker 4: surprise to see that in theater and to see Second Site,
- 42:27Speaker 4: you know, give it such a deluxe treatment only not
- 42:30Speaker 4: even two years later. Is I don't know, just I
- 42:34Speaker 4: guess it goes to show that Uh yeah, that movie
- 42:36Speaker 4: definitely definitely delivered.
- 42:38Speaker 3: Same with the Coffee Table that they put out this year.
- 42:40Speaker 3: You know, another shutter foreign title that didn't get a
- 42:44Speaker 3: whole lot of attention, and it was an incredible movie
- 42:47Speaker 3: and they gave it the world's treatment, So shout out
- 42:51Speaker 3: to them in every way man. And the great prices too,
- 42:54Speaker 3: Like you know, you can get the Pusher Trilogy, which
- 42:57Speaker 3: is three movies on four K with new comments, all
- 43:00Speaker 3: this stuff, you know, you can get for sixty bucks.
- 43:04Speaker 3: That's you know, people are paying that for for Blu rays,
- 43:08Speaker 3: you know now, So I think Innkeepers is less than
- 43:12Speaker 3: fifty bucks for a four K booklet all new bonus features,
- 43:16Speaker 3: so worth worth the value, you know.
- 43:20Speaker 4: Well, it's cool, especially because I mean they're definitely it
- 43:24Speaker 4: seems like Second Site's definitely got I feel like the
- 43:28Speaker 4: ty West films mastered as far as like how to
- 43:30Speaker 4: release them and to release some of the best possible qualities.
- 43:33Speaker 4: So yeah, I have a good feeling about about the
- 43:37Speaker 4: Innkeepers how that's going to turn out.
- 43:39Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, what uh what else did you bring for us?
- 43:41Speaker 2: Man?
- 43:42Speaker 4: Well, this one. I I'm curious to get a little
- 43:49Speaker 4: bit of feedback from you on this one. But I
- 43:53Speaker 4: picked up paranormal activity from Second sitey So speaking of
- 43:58Speaker 4: Witch like that, that was actually really good timing segue
- 44:01Speaker 4: or away into this What are your memories with this movie?
- 44:07Speaker 4: Because I think that this would have came out I
- 44:12Speaker 4: think when I was I was still in high school
- 44:14Speaker 4: when this film came out. Yeah, and I just remember
- 44:18Speaker 4: the impact this movie had when it first came out,
- 44:21Speaker 4: and just how it was tougher to try to track
- 44:24Speaker 4: down theaters that were actually playing this movie, and that
- 44:30Speaker 4: made it that much more desirable. And you heard about
- 44:32Speaker 4: word of mouth and the marketing was wild for that movie.
- 44:37Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, that's There are two times in my in
- 44:44Speaker 3: my life I feel like I was able to bear
- 44:47Speaker 3: witness to an event meaning that's what it is, Yeah,
- 44:52Speaker 3: meaning horror has surpassed just the little circle and it
- 44:55Speaker 3: became big. And one of them was it in twenty seven? Okay,
- 45:01Speaker 3: the Andy Muscietti Retelling. I remember everybody and their mother
- 45:05Speaker 3: talking about that it made a huge impact. And the
- 45:08Speaker 3: other was Paranormal Activity. And I you know what's funny too,
- 45:12Speaker 3: I remember how I feel like for people our age
- 45:17Speaker 3: that were born in ninety one, ninety two, ninety three,
- 45:22Speaker 3: the promotional impact of Paranormal Activity to us is what
- 45:27Speaker 3: a few years earlier to people our age Blair Witch
- 45:30Speaker 3: Project did. Yes, you know, because I remember the marketing
- 45:34Speaker 3: for Paranormal Activity so well, dude, it was so effective.
- 45:40Speaker 4: Well, and you know the way that they went about
- 45:44Speaker 4: advertising it was really smart because it drove up the
- 45:48Speaker 4: amount of hype that was building behind this movie.
- 45:51Speaker 3: They had those theater shots, remember it was like the
- 45:54Speaker 3: black Like it was like the night vision shots of
- 45:56Speaker 3: people jumping in their seats in the audience reactions.
- 45:59Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, no, it's there's a lot of really really
- 46:05Speaker 4: nostalgic memories attached with this movie, just the impact that
- 46:09Speaker 4: it had. I feel like this and then years later
- 46:14Speaker 4: with the word of mouth for Hereditary when that came out,
- 46:17Speaker 4: are the two movies. I always remember just how much
- 46:22Speaker 4: hype was behind it, you know, before and then when
- 46:25Speaker 4: the film was released, it was one of those movies
- 46:28Speaker 4: that you you don't want to miss out on because
- 46:30Speaker 4: you want to be part of the experience. And to
- 46:32Speaker 4: see that either of these movies in a full theater
- 46:36Speaker 4: was just very immersive. But yeah, so basically just for
- 46:43Speaker 4: those who aren't aware, So basically just a quick synopsis
- 46:46Speaker 4: on the story. So it's a young couple becomes convinced
- 46:50Speaker 4: their suburban home is being haunted by demonic presence. So
- 46:55Speaker 4: the gist of his in hope of finding some evidence,
- 46:58Speaker 4: they set up a video camera and they're bedroom to
- 47:00Speaker 4: film the room as they sleep. So essentially we're seeing
- 47:05Speaker 4: this as the audience. You're seeing how this is playing
- 47:09Speaker 4: out over multiple nights and the amount of like strange
- 47:13Speaker 4: paranormal stuff that begins to take place. And I know
- 47:19Speaker 4: definitively with this one. It's even years later, this movie
- 47:24Speaker 4: is I mean, if you turn the lights off and
- 47:28Speaker 4: you're just watching this and there's nobody home, it's creepy. Man.
- 47:33Speaker 4: I don't care how many sequels that have come out
- 47:36Speaker 4: since then. This movie is very effective and you're paying
- 47:41Speaker 4: attention to all these little details that are taking place
- 47:44Speaker 4: in the room, and it's probably like, what would you say,
- 47:48Speaker 4: I mean, really outside of the Blair Witch Project. Up
- 47:51Speaker 4: until when this came out, we didn't really have more
- 47:54Speaker 4: notable found footage movies that did it in the best
- 47:59Speaker 4: way possible, the same way that that Blair Witch Project did.
- 48:03Speaker 3: It always comes back to like the simplicity of it,
- 48:07Speaker 3: which is, you know, like Orin Pelly directed this movie.
- 48:10Speaker 3: He made it for under fifteen thousand dollars, like this
- 48:13Speaker 3: was his this was his home that he made this in.
- 48:17Speaker 3: And what's incredible about it is it we we rewatched
- 48:24Speaker 3: this not long ago, and I remember being like, I
- 48:27Speaker 3: know what's coming, Like I know what's about to happen
- 48:30Speaker 3: in a scene, but I'm still like, just it's you know,
- 48:34Speaker 3: because it happens at night when you're the most vulnerable.
- 48:38Speaker 4: That's exactly it.
- 48:39Speaker 3: That's when everything's happening, and you have even to me,
- 48:42Speaker 3: it's always creepiest with the Ouigi board. They leave and
- 48:46Speaker 3: then the Ouigi board goes nuts and catches on fire.
- 48:48Speaker 3: But also when she wakes up and just stares at
- 48:52Speaker 3: him for I think it's like what three hours fast forward.
- 48:56Speaker 4: Yeah, fast yep, fast forwards for the time, it's.
- 48:58Speaker 3: Like three hours that she's just standing there watching him,
- 49:01Speaker 3: and you know, at the end of the movie, there's
- 49:03Speaker 3: no you didn't learn anything, Like you didn't know. There
- 49:08Speaker 3: was a couple of things brought up about this could
- 49:10Speaker 3: be an attachment from childhood and stuff, but you know,
- 49:14Speaker 3: there was no proper resolution, and that was always like
- 49:18Speaker 3: I think where the sequels went wrong. It's like you
- 49:20Speaker 3: don't have to explain this thing. Less is more, still
- 49:24Speaker 3: scary though, dude, like still really really impactful.
- 49:29Speaker 4: Yeah, and uh, I mean this just as a whole,
- 49:34Speaker 4: the presentation on this is exceptional. Just I was happy
- 49:41Speaker 4: to be able to finally get my hands on this
- 49:43Speaker 4: one because I've been looking for it for some time.
- 49:45Speaker 4: But it's got a nice Richard slipcase, softcover book clip,
- 49:48Speaker 4: It's got a couple of art cards in there. You've
- 49:52Speaker 4: got a number of different audio commentaries on this new
- 49:56Speaker 4: well when that's was released, new interviews, and then it
- 49:59Speaker 4: has a couple of different endings, so you had the
- 50:02Speaker 4: alternative ending and then the festival cut ending, deleted scene,
- 50:07Speaker 4: and then you've got some additional content on there as well.
- 50:09Speaker 4: So as always, I mean, we obviously were talking about
- 50:13Speaker 4: this earlier very sacked release. Uh, you know, as second
- 50:17Speaker 4: Site always is so great about doing and this is
- 50:21Speaker 4: another great one. I mean, if you if you guys
- 50:24Speaker 4: are big on these movies, you know, I know that
- 50:28Speaker 4: there's other releases out there, but if you really want
- 50:31Speaker 4: the definitive way to own, at least the first one,
- 50:33Speaker 4: I think this is the way to go.
- 50:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I have the like the what did they call it,
- 50:39Speaker 3: the like the full collection that Paramount.
- 50:42Speaker 4: Put out with the hand Uh is that the one
- 50:46Speaker 4: like the hand imprint on it?
- 50:47Speaker 3: Yeah? That I had. Yeah, yeah, there was like I
- 50:49Speaker 3: got it for like forty bucks or something. And I've
- 50:51Speaker 3: never watched any of the I remember a Paranormal Activity
- 50:55Speaker 3: two being okay, I really liked three, and then from
- 50:58Speaker 3: there I just say, yeah, I never watched any of them.
- 51:02Speaker 3: I think what sold me on it was the documentary
- 51:05Speaker 3: that was on Paramount that was I think was on
- 51:07Speaker 3: Paramount Plus Exclusive. And then you also got the final
- 51:10Speaker 3: movie that was of streaming exclusive as well. That's part
- 51:13Speaker 3: of that set. But yeah, I mean those movies are
- 51:17Speaker 3: still especially that first one.
- 51:20Speaker 4: Oh yeah, effective.
- 51:21Speaker 3: Man, really effective. So I'll talk about something that's newer
- 51:27Speaker 3: and I won't won't talk about it too long, but
- 51:30Speaker 3: recently picked us up from the Vinegar Syndrome drop. And
- 51:34Speaker 3: this is George A Romero's The Dark Half. Hell Yeah,
- 51:39Speaker 3: And this one was long long overdue for an upgrade
- 51:45Speaker 3: from that screen factory Blu Ray. And I want to
- 51:47Speaker 3: thank all the people who paid the resale prices recently
- 51:51Speaker 3: for that Blu Ray, because I have some friends who
- 51:53Speaker 3: finally were like, I'm gonna buy it, and then they
- 51:56Speaker 3: overpaid for it, and then the four K was announced.
- 51:58Speaker 4: Thank you for your sacrifice.
- 52:00Speaker 3: So I just want to say thank you for your sacrifice.
- 52:03Speaker 3: So this is now put out in four K from
- 52:04Speaker 3: Vinegar Syndrome. It is their rigid box release with a
- 52:08Speaker 3: booklet that slipcover. It's a great presentation, Like I love
- 52:12Speaker 3: the notes slipcover that's on here. This is obviously, like
- 52:18Speaker 3: I said, directed by George A Romero, based on the
- 52:20Speaker 3: Stephen King. Novel follows an author that Beaumont, who is
- 52:26Speaker 3: a writer. He has somebody uncovers that he's been writing
- 52:31Speaker 3: under a pseudo ame. He's been writing kind of like
- 52:34Speaker 3: these sleazy action novels under a pseudo ame because they're
- 52:38Speaker 3: selling really well, and he decides to essentially kill off
- 52:44Speaker 3: this this alter ego half of his and turns out
- 52:49Speaker 3: that uh, that it's not that simple, and he gets
- 52:52Speaker 3: into a battle with literally a dark half of himself
- 52:57Speaker 3: that is physically manifested, and it becomes a wild, wild
- 53:03Speaker 3: journey that's like half slasher, half psychological horror, one of
- 53:13Speaker 3: in my opinion, outside of the Dead movies, probably Georgia
- 53:17Speaker 3: Merrow's best.
- 53:20Speaker 4: I would agree with that.
- 53:21Speaker 3: Yeah, dude. It was his first, it was his biggest,
- 53:24Speaker 3: it was his first studio film. He had the biggest budget,
- 53:27Speaker 3: the biggest crew. And what's really interesting to me is
- 53:31Speaker 3: that the Dark Half Stephen King book is Stephen King
- 53:35Speaker 3: wrestling with his pseudonym of Richard Bachman.
- 53:40Speaker 4: So you interesting parallels.
- 53:42Speaker 3: Yes, So you have that parallel, but then you have
- 53:43Speaker 3: Georgia Merrow, who is doing his first big studio release
- 53:48Speaker 3: trying to battle with the kind of indie filmmaking self.
- 53:53Speaker 3: So you have two kind of battles happening within the
- 53:57Speaker 3: story of Stephen King battling wrestle his other ego with
- 54:01Speaker 3: writing the book. And then you have George Romerow wrestling
- 54:04Speaker 3: one side of himself to adapt the book that's based
- 54:06Speaker 3: on the same thing that he's going through. So it's
- 54:10Speaker 3: really interesting, man, and it's great. I mean, the slasher
- 54:12Speaker 3: stuff is awesome. Timothy Hutton puts on a fantastic lead performance.
- 54:17Speaker 3: Michael Rooker is awesome as the sheriff.
- 54:21Speaker 4: It's a very atmospheric film too. It's just very cozy, intimate,
- 54:26Speaker 4: creepy mm hmm.
- 54:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it looks great. The four K looks phenomenal. You
- 54:32Speaker 3: also have a great they imported over the Red Shirt
- 54:38Speaker 3: Pictures making of documentary. It's like forty minutes long from
- 54:41Speaker 3: the screen factor release, So that's on here. You also
- 54:43Speaker 3: have a couple of new interviews on here, one with
- 54:46Speaker 3: George A Romero's assistant director that I really liked. It
- 54:49Speaker 3: gives you a lot of insight into kind of like
- 54:51Speaker 3: that Pittsburgh crew that Romero used so efficiently for most
- 54:56Speaker 3: of his career. And Yeah, just a packed release, man,
- 55:00Speaker 3: a movie that I really really really enjoyed and really
- 55:02Speaker 3: loved and super happy that now it's back in the conversation.
- 55:07Speaker 4: Yeah, because I.
- 55:07Speaker 3: Feel like, you know, you had obviously all the dead
- 55:11Speaker 3: movies could talk about Martin from Second Sight. The conversation
- 55:14Speaker 3: kicked off on that a couple of years ago.
- 55:16Speaker 4: That's another nice one.
- 55:17Speaker 3: Yeah, Indicator put out Bruiser, which was the movie he
- 55:21Speaker 3: did after the Dark Half seven years later, so that
- 55:25Speaker 3: you know, new conversation. Some happy people are discovering The
- 55:29Speaker 3: Dark Half, and I've seen a lot of conversation around like, hey,
- 55:33Speaker 3: is this you know, kind of secretly Georgia Mero's best
- 55:35Speaker 3: movie outside of his Dead movies.
- 55:38Speaker 4: So I would I would have to say, I don't
- 55:40Speaker 4: know about you, but if outside of the Dead trilogy,
- 55:45Speaker 4: I feel like Martin, this and then Creepshow obviously are
- 55:50Speaker 4: probably some of his best films outside of the Dead trilogy.
- 55:55Speaker 3: Yeah, Bruiser is good. I did love I mean, it's
- 55:58Speaker 3: not a movie, it's more of like a PSA. But
- 56:00Speaker 3: I did love The Amusement Park, which was that lost film.
- 56:05Speaker 3: You know that fifty two minutes. It was like a
- 56:07Speaker 3: public service announcement thing. But I did love that that
- 56:11Speaker 3: he directed. He just you know what it is, George
- 56:15Speaker 3: Romero was His inspirations were very like I don't want
- 56:23Speaker 3: to say, not flashy, but very traditional filmmakers. You know,
- 56:26Speaker 3: there's not a lot of flashiness in Romero's work. And
- 56:31Speaker 3: it's interesting because in one of the interviews with the
- 56:33Speaker 3: cinematographer for The Dark Half, he talks about how he
- 56:37Speaker 3: fell out of place because he is. He is from Europe,
- 56:41Speaker 3: and him and Romero kind of clashed and it was
- 56:44Speaker 3: his idea to do the alternating red and blue light
- 56:46Speaker 3: in the hallway scene in the Dark Half, which wasn't
- 56:50Speaker 3: really Romero's speed, and so a lot of that visual
- 56:56Speaker 3: pops in the Dark Half were more outside influences than Romero.
- 57:02Speaker 3: But I think there's a nice balance there, you know,
- 57:04Speaker 3: it brings just enough of that in it doesn't detract
- 57:07Speaker 3: from the very traditional, straightforward, typical Romero storytelling.
- 57:11Speaker 4: You know, well he's been I feel like in recent years.
- 57:14Speaker 4: The other one that we forgot to mention was Monkey
- 57:16Speaker 4: Shines just got a four K as well from Spring Factory.
- 57:19Speaker 3: Yes, sin Spring Factory, a blu ray from Umbrella. But
- 57:22Speaker 3: again another movie that's not there's not a lot of
- 57:25Speaker 3: visual flashing monkey Shines. It's very traditional. No. And here's
- 57:29Speaker 3: the thing though, great statement on George Romeiro. You don't
- 57:32Speaker 3: he doesn't need that, Like, he doesn't need to. He
- 57:36Speaker 3: doesn't need to, you know, wow, you with with with
- 57:39Speaker 3: whatever's happening. He just does a really good job at
- 57:42Speaker 3: at shooting movies, very straightforward. They tell great stories, they're scary,
- 57:49Speaker 3: and they're effective. So I think that's pretty You can
- 57:53Speaker 3: kind of paint that that that across across his filmography.
- 57:56Speaker 4: I think I just think the the uh, the films
- 58:00Speaker 4: that he did outside of the Dead Trilogy, I think
- 58:04Speaker 4: they're very, very diverse as far as types of stories
- 58:07Speaker 4: that he tells, and he was just so effective like
- 58:10Speaker 4: he had like after those films, he had such a
- 58:14Speaker 4: strong run with some of the films that we were
- 58:16Speaker 4: talking about. I just it's exciting to just see that
- 58:20Speaker 4: he's getting his due for some of his lesser known movies.
- 58:24Speaker 4: And Vinegrant Syndrome did a phenomenal job with this release.
- 58:28Speaker 3: Well that's what's funny is you have and one of
- 58:30Speaker 3: the write ups in the little booklet Vinegar Syndrome gives
- 58:33Speaker 3: you here there's a which I never even thought of.
- 58:36Speaker 3: You know, Romero does a dark half. He really struggles
- 58:39Speaker 3: with the big budget, studio involvement style of production. He
- 58:45Speaker 3: the experience of the Dark Half led him to take
- 58:48Speaker 3: the biggest break in his career ever. You know, he
- 58:51Speaker 3: took seven years off and then the movie that he
- 58:54Speaker 3: returns to make, a Bruiser, is literally a movie about
- 58:58Speaker 3: a man who wakes up with out of face. So
- 59:03Speaker 3: I think the experience of the dark half in the
- 59:05Speaker 3: experience of the big studio thing just lived with him
- 59:09Speaker 3: for so long. He didn't really get that out until Bruiser.
- 59:14Speaker 3: So it's kind of an interesting double feature to see
- 59:18Speaker 3: what Romero was really struggling with, because there's a bit
- 59:24Speaker 3: in the bonus features here with Georgia Merrow's wife at
- 59:28Speaker 3: the time, who actually says how bad he struggled, and
- 59:32Speaker 3: there were days that he woke up and just physically
- 59:35Speaker 3: couldnot get himself out of bed because he was so
- 59:40Speaker 3: just emotionally tattered by the experience of this movie, which
- 59:44Speaker 3: is crazy to think about man. And she said, hey,
- 59:46Speaker 3: that that's not like him, Like, that's not what he
- 59:49Speaker 3: that She had never seen that before from it. I
- 59:51Speaker 3: actually think that's in the booklet. Yeah, it's in the booklet.
- 59:55Speaker 3: So it's interesting to look at. You know, you don't
- 59:58Speaker 3: get that in the Dead movie. You don't get that
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: much of his other his other at all. I think
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: the nineties are really interesting dive into, you know, the
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: world of Romero.
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: I would agree with that.
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: What we got one more left? Man? Did you save
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: the best for last?
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: I did listen. It's uh. I would have to say,
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: it's more so for I say the best for last
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: for what I enjoy, but coming off of a he
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: had a whole week dedicated to him, and I had
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: to say the best one for last. That by the cemetery.
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: Nice.
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: So I initially had picked up the I believe it's
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: the Blue Underground release, and with the anticipation we're getting
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: Zombie next month, I four k through Arrow and we
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: have the Beyond. Obviously that's that's in the rear view
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: now at this point, but it felt right to make
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: that upgrade. And not that there's anything wrong with the
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: Blue Underground release. I think it's it's incredible for for
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: what it is. But the more and more that I
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: saw these releases and and just the the inter collector
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: and me decided to pull the trigger on trying to
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: nap up some of these Arrow box sets. But gorgeous,
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: just as a whole gorgeous. As with their other releases,
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: they have the reversible slip cover art, which is awesome.
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: There's a booklet in here.
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: I love the cohesiveness of the art to.
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: The yeah yeah, Zombie Yeah, And you know, in in
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: recent years it's just been so cool. Luccio Fulci, I've
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: said this before. He's one of my favorite directors, so
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: to see these releases getting such like premium like four
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: K restorations, the amount of like detail and love that
- 1:02:12Speaker 4: are put into each one of his films. We got
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: Murder Rock recently as well, so I'm waiting for that.
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: But yeah, I so just a quick synopsis on the movie.
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: So basically, family relocates from New York City to an
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: aging home in rural New England. There's an evil force
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: which lurks in the basement, which has already claimed the
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: previous occupant now has a site set on the new owners.
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: So this unsuspecting family will become only too familiar with
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: the dark secret of the monstrous doctor freud Stein. And
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: as with all of Lucio Foulci's films, it's more atmosphere,
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: very very nightmarish, fringe stream logic when it comes to
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: what's exactly going on in each one of his films,
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: or at least at least the gates of hell trology.
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: And to get it in four K, I never in
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: a million years thought that I would get this movie
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: looking as as breathtaking as it does. Listen, I'll welcome
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: new Luccio Fulci all day. Every day of the week.
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: I want to plug real quick, friend of the show.
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: You were on with the King of Shallo.
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: Yes, with Tanner.
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you're on with Tanner. I don't know if
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: it's a podcast or if it's just a live thing
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: that he does, but to nearly two hour long discussion
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: of you guys talking about Jallo's and there was a
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: big portion of that talking about specifically Fulci. So I
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: love that. I want to make sure that I that
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: we leave that link in the in the description for everybody,
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: which I guess.
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: Yeah. Absolutely. It was more of an in depth conversation
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: that I got to have with Tanner just because it's uh,
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: you know, Giallo and knowing where the I feel like
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: the line gets blurred a little bit with Italian horror
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: and Giallo and just being able to go more in
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: depth on the Ghiallow films and talk about Lucio Folci
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: and all that. It's just cool, you know, you get
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: an opportunity to kind of connect with someone that really
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: enjoys it. Same with you as well. I know we're
- 1:04:33Speaker 4: both very passionate about a lot of like the Italian
- 1:04:36Speaker 4: films that they have been released. But yeah, so we
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: got a four K restoration trying to see some of
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: the other notes I had on this. So there's a
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: new audio commentary on it, deleted scene. They have the
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: restored international and theatrical trailers, some TV spots and then
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: some stills that are included here as well, and then
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: there's a bunch of of archival interviews that are brought
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: over on the Blu ray disc. So there's a Q
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: and a full or I mean a feature length panel,
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: and then there's a lot of visual content that's included
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: as well on this release. So if you're trying to
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: get into Italian horror, the Gates of Hell trilogy or
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: Zombie is a great way to jump into it. And
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: this film is fucking awesome, So give it a shot.
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: You know, it's a movie that I feel like grows
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: on you, and it's any one of his films can
- 1:05:38Speaker 4: be the gateway to discovering more about Italian horror, and
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: you know.
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: The gateway to Hell or your love for Italian horror.
- 1:05:48Speaker 4: I listen, I'm there, sign me up.
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: Do great, great pick I have that as well. It's
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: a gorgeous release. I also have my pre order end
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: for Zombie.
- 1:05:59Speaker 4: Yep, same here too.
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: So not as exciting a final pick from me. But
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: back to Second Site Films for the final time tonight
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: she got. So let's chat about the Philip brothers talk
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: to me, which is it's awesome. This is already this
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: already has a good deluxe edition just came out in
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: twenty twenty two. Second Site did absolute wonder on this.
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: Of course, it's not a not a new four K restoration.
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: We already had the Studio four K which looked great.
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: So there's no new restoration on this, but just nice
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: to have a thick boy treatment for a movie that
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: I think one hundred percent deserves the royal hand here.
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: You know, this is the third time I've seen the movie,
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: watching it on this release still as effective as it
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: was the first time we saw it. You know, the
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: Philip were you familiar with their work as Rack of
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: Raca before talk to me or no?
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: Briefly? Okay, I had seen it in passing. It was
- 1:07:10Speaker 4: never something that I was like actively following like that.
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: But when they made the jump from they were more
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: known for YouTube yep videos, right, yeah, So making the
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: jump from that and getting into like full feature length films,
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: you know, especially like you know, I think I like
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: to think that we closely watch upcoming horror movies and
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: you hear the buzz behind it. I mean, this was
- 1:07:34Speaker 4: definitely a movie that was talked about before it was released,
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: and I thought they delivered. Yeah, two for two so far.
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: I remember because you know, the rack of Raka content
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: was very chaotic, and I'll never forget the opening shot
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: of this movie. The opening five minutes is an incredibly
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: complex winner of going through this party and it's you know,
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: it was one of those things where I was like,
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: holy shit, we're in it, Like these guys are legit.
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: That's a tough jump from YouTuber whether you're making short
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: films or whatever you're doing, to actual filmmaker, like having
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: a team, a script doing this thing. And you know,
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: this was a film written by one of the Philip
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: Who brothers, and they just blew it out of the
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: water Man. It's a movie that's incredibly authentic to Australian
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: party culture as well and kind of Australian youth at
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: that time. And it's a movie that second and third
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: viewing really stood out to me. Its notes on addiction
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: and social media influence. For those people who've never seen
- 1:08:46Speaker 3: Talk to me. It is essentially we follow a couple
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: characters who get wrapped up in what is essentially an
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: embombed hand, but well half an arm hand and it
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: was of a I forget what they describe her as.
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: Was she a like a medium or something? There was
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: something to her or to the hand.
- 1:09:13Speaker 4: I gotta do a rewatch. Yeah who is Yeah, because
- 1:09:16Speaker 4: it's a little it's uh, spend some time since I've
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: seen it, but now now that this box set's out,
- 1:09:24Speaker 4: to watch.
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: It and at parties they essentially strap you down. You
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: hold the hand and you say, talk to me and
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: present it in front of you as a spirit. And
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: to further that, you say, I let you in, and
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: the spirit possesses you and you can only they only
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: let you do it for ninety seconds or the spirit
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: wants to remain and kind of becomes an addiction. Like
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: you have these teenagers who are addicted to doing this,
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: and they're posting on social media and they're it's really
- 1:09:55Speaker 3: kind of it's kind of scary to see this crede,
- 1:09:58Speaker 3: especially in a world of you know, dares and all
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: kinds of crazy shit that we see on TikTok, you know,
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: and it goes too far and one of our main
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: characters is possessed, and it gets really not possessed in
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: the traditional sense, but it gets really wild. And this
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: movie is not afraid to go for the juggler, and
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: it does it every single time. Man, this the first
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: watch of this movie is incredibly shocking. Even the second
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: and third time, Man, I was just as put it
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: back by some of the stuff in this movie. You
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: know what I mean, what was that movie?
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: What you were expecting?
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: No?
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: Okay, no, not at all.
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: It's it's interesting, man, because I'm not a like a
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: ghost possession movie fan. Typically, I feel like, you know,
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: there's a time the movies that did it really well,
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: and nobody since has really been able to put a
- 1:11:03Speaker 3: unique spin on it. And I was watching this with
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: my wife when when the second Site one came out
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: and I was like, there, you know, there's so much
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: here that's borrowed from the genre as a whole, but
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: what a fucking original spin on it? Like this could
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: only come from somebody who is tapped in to this generation,
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: you know, and they're a little younger than us rack
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: A Raca, they're like late twenties. But it's such a
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: great like you don't need something that's wholly original. I'm
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: not when I when I, when I go into movies,
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: I'm not asking for like, show me something I've never
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: seen before, but put enough spin on it that it
- 1:11:42Speaker 3: makes it new. And that's what talk to Me does,
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: and it it just makes it incredibly unique. And in
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: the booklet that's supplied here, it's one hundred and sixteen
- 1:11:52Speaker 3: page booklet, this is a movie that you can really
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: like dissect into heavily. And one of the articles taps
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: into alcoholism and addiction and how this how the character
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: or Mia, the main character in this movie, how she
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: literally is hitting all these points of addiction, and how
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: the other characters that are also participating in this game
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: are hitting all of these points of addiction, whether it's
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: for fitting in, whether it's for acceptance, you know, and
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: then they are one of the One of the write
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: ups also kind of talks about the the oh no,
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: it's not. The write up Kat Ellinger, who is an
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: incredible writer. She's typically found a lot of visual essays.
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: She has a fantastic visual essay on this called Contagion,
- 1:12:45Speaker 3: and she talks about how well this movie links like
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: all the social media challenges and stuff, the current trend
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: of social media. But that event that happens when you know,
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: something crazy can happen in front of you, but the
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: moment you start recording, it separates you. The phone puts you,
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: you know, it separates you and allows you to kind
- 1:13:04Speaker 3: of experience that event differently. And that's why we see
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: this weird attachment of people, you know, recording events you know,
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: of peril or whatever, of tragedy, but not getting involved
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: in helping because they put up this barrier, which is
- 1:13:21Speaker 3: the phone.
- 1:13:23Speaker 4: And it's really strange when you think about it that way.
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: Yeah, dude, they put up that barrier and it kind
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: of puts up, you know, a fence in between them.
- 1:13:30Speaker 3: It doesn't it lessens the realism of it. But then
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: they also get the serotonin hit of the likes and
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: the views and the attention. And so there's a lot
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: that's broken down in this, you know set from Second
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: Sight Films also too, there is an hour long interview
- 1:13:49Speaker 3: with the Philippoo brothers and I may be saying, PHILIPO,
- 1:13:52Speaker 3: I think it's Philipo something Philip Philipo. Philip I realized
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: that time I said Philip who.
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: Didn't mean to so Chris, I'll hold that against you.
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: Uh but uh, there is an hour long interview with
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: them that was newly filmed where you could just feel
- 1:14:12Speaker 3: the passion from them, man, like it's it's almost infectious.
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: They were they were talking about the experience of taking
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: it to a festival when the word of mouth really
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: got started, and I was smiling at how how just
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: enthusiastic and how happy they were that this worked. There's
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: another great interview with the producer that was the same way.
- 1:14:32Speaker 3: But my favorite on here is a little segment called
- 1:14:36Speaker 3: Beautifully Grotesque. It's a new interview with the cinematographer Aaron mcliskey,
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: and that's my passion cinematography, the visual and man, this
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: guy just made me fall in love with him as
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: a cinematographer. He was talking about breaking down scenes and
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: talk about the waters and the coloring and his his
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: coordination with the Philippe brothers and the the energy all around.
- 1:15:00Speaker 3: This release was actually kind of infectious and made me
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: like the movie more.
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: Honestly, that's incredible.
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: So this is uh, this is still available. You can
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: get this in the movie room. You can get this
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: a diabolic, you can still get this an orbit. You
- 1:15:13Speaker 3: know if you already have the four K and booklets
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: or bonus features aren't important to you. I understand that,
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: but just know you're wrong and that you should up.
- 1:15:25Speaker 4: Fast fired. Listen, you know what plant the flag man?
- 1:15:29Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah, right, yeah, but yeah, incredible release. Man, I
- 1:15:34Speaker 3: was so excited to dive into that. Dude, I jumped
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: into it right away, which was which is kind of
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: rare for me.
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: Well, I can't help but wonder if at some point
- 1:15:45Speaker 4: they'll do Bring Her Back.
- 1:15:47Speaker 3: I haven't seen that yet.
- 1:15:50Speaker 4: It's it's a nice companion piece to talk to me.
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: I think the two obviously very very different types of story,
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: but man, I would kill for a nice four K
- 1:16:05Speaker 4: through second sight once that movie is released, or at
- 1:16:08Speaker 4: least like after some time has passed.
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: I heard, it's pretty amazing to have your future film
- 1:16:17Speaker 3: be as well like this Talk to Me was and
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: as good as it was. And I heard Bring Her
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: Back shows an incredible like maturity yes in them, and
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: like they they always bring and I haven't even seen
- 1:16:32Speaker 3: Bring Her Back, but they always bring a unique perspective
- 1:16:35Speaker 3: on what they do, and it's so it's like its
- 1:16:38Speaker 3: own genre, like bring Her Back. When I when I
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: saw the trailer. I was like, this looks like nothing
- 1:16:43Speaker 3: I've ever I bro, I'll be honest with you. I've
- 1:16:46Speaker 3: read synopsies, I've read reviews, I've seen every trailer they
- 1:16:49Speaker 3: put out. I have no idea what that movie is about.
- 1:16:52Speaker 4: Oh it's You're in for a Ride. So I can't
- 1:16:55Speaker 4: wait to see I think you, out of all people
- 1:16:59Speaker 4: are really gonna like it. Yeah, it's that. That's probably
- 1:17:04Speaker 4: up there as far as like movies that have been
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: released so far this year.
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: All right, man, well there it is. There's a We
- 1:17:12Speaker 3: went on for an hour and sixteen minutes about physical media.
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: Love that.
- 1:17:16Speaker 4: Yeah, physical media is not dead.
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: No, no, not at all, man. And there's so much
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: more coming. I mean today I just started my deep
- 1:17:24Speaker 3: dive into the second sight release of The Nice Guys.
- 1:17:28Speaker 3: I just got this umbrella set. I have the Severn
- 1:17:31Speaker 3: Cliff Temlo box set landing here in a couple of days.
- 1:17:37Speaker 3: I still have to find the rare night that I'm
- 1:17:41Speaker 3: going to watch Enter the Void from from Vinegar Syndrome
- 1:17:45Speaker 3: or IFC Films.
- 1:17:46Speaker 4: I still have to watch that too. I got ja.
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: Well you already watched Jade, didn't.
- 1:17:49Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I love I almost brought that in to
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: talk about tonight. But yeah, I like I like Jade, man.
- 1:17:54Speaker 3: It's a it's a very extreme episode of CSI Miami.
