- 0:04Good morning. This is the Sacramento Brief, your
- 0:08weekday roundup of overnight headlines and what's
- 0:11ahead across the city. I'm Carol. It's Thursday,
- 0:16May 28th, 2026. Let's get you caught up. Rancho
- 0:21Cordova police say two suspects were arrested
- 0:23after officers recovered stolen mail during a
- 0:26traffic stop connected to a reported mailbox
- 0:29theft. Police say officers were called after
- 0:32a witness reported seeing a woman get out of
- 0:34a vehicle, remove mail from a community mailbox,
- 0:37and leave the area. The witness gave dispatchers
- 0:40a description of the vehicle and license plate
- 0:42number. Officers found the vehicle nearby, conducted
- 0:45a traffic stop, During that investigation, police
- 0:49say they found numerous pieces of open and unopened
- 0:52mail tied to residents across the Rancho Cordova
- 0:55area. Investigators also recovered a passport,
- 0:59financial documents, and other personal items.
- 1:02Both suspects were booked into Sacramento County
- 1:04Main Jail on death -related charges. And in Sacramento,
- 1:08police reported two separate arrests earlier
- 1:11this week. One in the Central Command area. Officers
- 1:14located a stolen vehicle near J Street and 5th
- 1:17Street around 5 .20 p .m. Police say when they
- 1:21stopped the vehicle, the driver ran. After a
- 1:24brief foot chase, the officers safely took the
- 1:27suspect into custody. And in East Sacramento,
- 1:30officers responded to a burglary in progress
- 1:33in the 2500 block of San Jose Way shortly after
- 1:368 a .m. Police say they found the suspect nearby
- 1:40and detained them. The suspect was on active
- 1:43parole and had an outstanding felony warrant.
- 1:47In City Watch. Sacramento County is continuing
- 1:50outreach and enforcement efforts around street
- 1:53food vending with a focus on helping vendors
- 1:56operate legally and safely. The County Environmental
- 1:59Management Department says staff regularly inspect
- 2:02areas with known and reported unpermitted food
- 2:06vending activity. Officials say the first goal
- 2:09is to educate, helping vendors understand permitting
- 2:12rules, food safety standards, and available business
- 2:15resources. Recent inspections have included support
- 2:19from code enforcement and the Department of Finance.
- 2:23County officials say inspectors have documented
- 2:26unsafe food handling concerns, including raw
- 2:28meat stored on the ground in trash bags, refrigerated
- 2:32food being held at unsafe temperatures, lack
- 2:34of hand washing facilities and unsafe cooking
- 2:37or storage equipment. Health officials say consumers
- 2:41should look for a valid Sacramento County mobile
- 2:43food sticker when buying from mobile vendors.
- 2:46At restaurants, Sacramento County uses a color
- 2:49-coded placard system. Green means pass, yellow
- 2:52means conditional pass, and red means that the
- 2:56business should be closed. County officials say
- 2:59buying from permitted vendors helps ensure food
- 3:03has been inspected and handled under approved
- 3:06safety standards. You're tuned in to the Sacramento
