- 0:15Speaker 1: As I continue on here in my substitution role, well
- 0:20Speaker 1: my new found friend and station seven to ten war
- 0:25Speaker 1: which I hope will be all of yours, substituting for
- 0:28Speaker 1: the best guy in talk radio in the trich State area,
- 0:32Speaker 1: bar Non Mark Simon. I mean, he's a smooth operator.
- 0:38Speaker 1: And I'll be with you until January second, the day
- 0:42Speaker 1: after the ball drops, you know, I'm in Times Square
- 0:46Speaker 1: with the Guardian Angels. And then the next day we'll
- 0:48Speaker 1: see about the inauguration of Jorhan Mandami with Bernie the
- 0:53Speaker 1: out the Coca Sanders standing there in city Hall. Look
- 0:57Speaker 1: a lot to deal with coming up, but a lot
- 1:00Speaker 1: to deal with it here and now, because is he
- 1:03Speaker 1: who was on the boards formerly a refugee from WABC.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Used to be always broadcasting Curtis No more, It's always
- 1:10Speaker 1: booked bashing Curtis so good, good that you hear? Is
- 1:15Speaker 1: he much better place? And as you know from my
- 1:19Speaker 1: many years of broadcasting, whenever the temperatures would get below freezing,
- 1:25Speaker 1: I would have a phrase that was taught to me
- 1:27Speaker 1: by my father Chester, who grew up in the Chicago
- 1:31Speaker 1: area right off of Lake Michigan, when there were real
- 1:35Speaker 1: winters with real snow storms twenty foot more before we
- 1:42Speaker 1: had global warming and climate change. I know a lot
- 1:46Speaker 1: of you it's a fake fake. It's not fake global
- 1:49Speaker 1: warming and climate change. Let me tell you something. It
- 1:51Speaker 1: is not fake. But no hawk is talking. Now, you're
- 1:57Speaker 1: not city. I've heard that phrase these over the years.
- 2:01Speaker 1: What does that mean? The hawk is talking? Actually came
- 2:04Speaker 1: out of Chicago's South Side, where my dad was from
- 2:08Speaker 1: and his family on the polar side of my family
- 2:11Speaker 1: forty six in Rockwell. I actually spent four years going
- 2:15Speaker 1: up there from ages one to five and then came
- 2:18Speaker 1: back to Brooklyn. But the hawk was talking. I think
- 2:23Speaker 1: it was first said by Louis Armstrong. That's say, play
- 2:28Speaker 1: that horn. Louis from North Corona in Queens, right opposite
- 2:33Speaker 1: where Tony Bennett grew up, the crooner from Estoria, the
- 2:37Speaker 1: Estoria kid. Yeah, oh they got him. You see him
- 2:39Speaker 1: near the house of Louis Armstrong. But Louis Armstrong would
- 2:44Speaker 1: come into the South Side black jazz clubs frequented by
- 2:49Speaker 1: whites and blacks interratio crowd and because it felt like
- 2:54Speaker 1: it was forty degrees below zero wind chill fact up
- 2:57Speaker 1: because the winds were coming off of Lake Michigan. He
- 3:02Speaker 1: would say, the hawk is talking because his lips, which
- 3:06Speaker 1: is so frozen. Like the other performers they tell you, basically,
- 3:09Speaker 1: it's gonna take like five or ten minutes from my
- 3:12Speaker 1: lips to unfreeze, so I could be able to play
- 3:16Speaker 1: that horn now, which probably didn't know, or maybe some
- 3:20Speaker 1: of you knew that Louis Armstrong probably consumed and inhaled
- 3:27Speaker 1: and exhaled more reef for more marijuana than anybody else
- 3:31Speaker 1: during the jazz era. That's what he was knowing. In fact,
- 3:34Speaker 1: he would actually shotgun you through the horn, which meant basically,
- 3:39Speaker 1: he would inhale it and then exhale it through the
- 3:42Speaker 1: horn and right into your schnizola. Long before the nineteen
- 3:47Speaker 1: sixties peace, love and happiness, Hate Ashbury Woodstock, half a
- 3:52Speaker 1: million strong up the New York State through it. Yeah,
- 3:55Speaker 1: a long time before the era that we called the
- 3:59Speaker 1: counterculture there. I grew up in the ear of the hippies,
- 4:02Speaker 1: era of the Hippies. Well, anyway, the hawk is talking,
- 4:07Speaker 1: and it reminded me at the times we would go
- 4:09Speaker 1: visit the Polish side of the family. Christmas Easter, my
- 4:15Speaker 1: dad had put everybody in the fifty four Ford station
- 4:19Speaker 1: wagon Old Betsy, you know, whitewall tires, wood panels, and
- 4:24Speaker 1: we'd be going through all different areas. I mean, we
- 4:27Speaker 1: ended up going across Phillipsburg from Jersey, across the bridge
- 4:32Speaker 1: through Easton, which was the home of Larry Holmes world
- 4:37Speaker 1: champion heavyweight. Obviously not back in the early sixties when
- 4:42Speaker 1: we were riding through there. And then I remember Allentown
- 4:44Speaker 1: and Bethlehem had the US Steel plan going. Now it's
- 4:47Speaker 1: a casino, and we go through Pittsburgh three ships round
- 4:51Speaker 1: the clock on an orange plume would hang over the
- 4:54Speaker 1: city because of all the steel mills. And then eventually
- 4:58Speaker 1: through Gary, Indiana, South Chicago, the steel mills there, going
- 5:02Speaker 1: three shifts right into Chicago itself. That's when Steele was
- 5:07Speaker 1: king in the United States. Now you have US Steel
- 5:11Speaker 1: partly owned by the Japanese partner owned by the United
- 5:15Speaker 1: States the Trump administration to keep all that steel being
- 5:17Speaker 1: made here, right, boy, that's a throwback. And I remember
- 5:22Speaker 1: we'd go out to the sleep With compound. By then
- 5:25Speaker 1: they were out in Lockport, which was between Joliet had
- 5:30Speaker 1: that walled prison there in Chicago, and they had the subdivisions,
- 5:35Speaker 1: and my job was to go out and slap the hogs.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Oh yeah, slap the hogs after the feed for the family.
- 5:43Speaker 1: And I learned there were the two of the smartest
- 5:46Speaker 1: animals ever, the hogs, the pigs and the crows who
- 5:51Speaker 1: were out there in the cornfields, you know, with these
- 5:54Speaker 1: scarecrows trying to scam away. My dad, in fact, when
- 5:57Speaker 1: he was young, had Jimmy the crow was his pet.
- 6:00Speaker 1: He would fly with him to and from school to
- 6:03Speaker 1: Sherman Park in his public school, and he would wait
- 6:06Speaker 1: there on the window sill until my dad was ready
- 6:08Speaker 1: to walk home again to the south side. Forty six
- 6:11Speaker 1: and Rockwell, that's a little bit of that side issue.
- 6:15Speaker 1: But let's talk about this storm warning and the fact
- 6:20Speaker 1: that many of you are you know, well, you gotta
- 6:24Speaker 1: sort of go back in time to remember when heavy
- 6:27Speaker 1: snowfalls were common, and now it's an exception to the rule.
- 6:33Speaker 1: And I've always said, why is it different now, I'd
- 6:36Speaker 1: say global warming, climate change. Look what's happening in southern
- 6:40Speaker 1: California there, it's like a tsunami has hit the area.
- 6:44Speaker 1: But oh no, no, it's of course not you know, okay,
- 6:48Speaker 1: you could have your opinion. I have my opinion. But
- 6:51Speaker 1: I remember it'd be like fourteen sixteen foot of snow
- 6:57Speaker 1: had to go out, put the chains on the tires
- 7:00Speaker 1: the buses, the klang klang huge, I mean, the sanitation
- 7:07Speaker 1: bulldozers would push the snow all to an area, you know,
- 7:11Speaker 1: almost like a mount rushmore there on the corners. You
- 7:14Speaker 1: don't have that anymore. And it's interesting as we were
- 7:18Speaker 1: hearing these forecasts, because Nancy was driving me all through
- 7:22Speaker 1: the tri state area visiting her relatives. Uh and uh. Also, oh,
- 7:28Speaker 1: some interesting information I picked up at a copper crow
- 7:33Speaker 1: remember as the crow flies. That's on Broadway and Olmony
- 7:37Speaker 1: Capitol Land. What is that is the crow flies? It's
- 7:40Speaker 1: the most direct straight line distance between two places. Yep,
- 7:45Speaker 1: a great place, Coppler. And man, did I learn a
- 7:48Speaker 1: lot about how Republicans are throwing the party under the
- 7:54Speaker 1: bus that will not have those chains, those old iron
- 7:59Speaker 1: chains at all. No, no, no no, but thrown under
- 8:02Speaker 1: the bush with as you know, Alice Stephonic leaving the race.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Oh that's gonna be Operation Hush hush mush much. You're
- 8:10Speaker 1: not gonna want to miss it. Because I'm connecting all
- 8:13Speaker 1: the dots as i worked my way through troy Almany,
- 8:18Speaker 1: connected the Hamilton Hill, all these places again with the
- 8:25Speaker 1: predictions where snow you know snow is coming. What I
- 8:28Speaker 1: said as the crow flies, a lot of crows up there,
- 8:33Speaker 1: smart animals, smart birds and anyway, I said to myself, Wow.
- 8:40Speaker 1: And then people coming up to me, no matter where
- 8:42Speaker 1: I was, because obviously I'm wearing the red butray, the
- 8:44Speaker 1: red Satine jacket, and be giving me all kinds of
- 8:48Speaker 1: information about what I should be doing with my life. Yeah,
- 8:50Speaker 1: is he I'm up there in Capitol lan oh Man.
- 8:53Speaker 1: You should be on WG wire. Heard you on wo
- 8:56Speaker 1: off and watch someone. I said, why would I want
- 8:58Speaker 1: to be on WGY ten, big station up there in Albany.
- 9:01Speaker 1: But I'm not coming up here at Albany. I've spent
- 9:05Speaker 1: time in the South End in Aubury, Hilm. I'm not
- 9:07Speaker 1: coming up to Albany. And then on my way down
- 9:12Speaker 1: at one of those rest stops in the New York
- 9:14Speaker 1: State Thruway, you know, before we hit Marwall. You know,
- 9:17Speaker 1: we went from Rockland and then into New Jersey and
- 9:19Speaker 1: then through Fortney over the GW Bridge and I looked
- 9:23Speaker 1: up and there was Eric Adams, a swaggerman with no
- 9:26Speaker 1: plans apartment and he's lived in for years, you know,
- 9:30Speaker 1: with his what is no his boo, his beard, Tracy
- 9:34Speaker 1: and then the other girl friend, the weightlifter underneath apartment
- 9:37Speaker 1: twenty two eighth. I'm not going to give you the address,
- 9:39Speaker 1: And I said to myself, man, I've come full circle.
- 9:43Speaker 1: And then as we finally get into the apartment, it's
- 9:47Speaker 1: in the wee hours in the morning, and what does
- 9:49Speaker 1: my wife do, Nancy the best thing that ever happened
- 9:53Speaker 1: to me. She starts binge watching The Office, you know,
- 9:58Speaker 1: the show from scraton New Jersey with Steve Correll as
- 10:02Speaker 1: Michael and Dwight and Jim. And she's got on the
- 10:06Speaker 1: episode which is I guess you'd call it the snowball
- 10:09Speaker 1: episode Classy Christmas, in which the whole concept is it's
- 10:14Speaker 1: not a real snowfall if it's just a dusting of snow.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Oh man, if you haven't seen this, you got you
- 10:23Speaker 1: gotta watch that episode. Well, one of my favorite TV shows. Again,
- 10:28Speaker 1: Nancy loves to binge watch, you know. As we come
- 10:31Speaker 1: into New Years. I'll be very busy, as I always am,
- 10:34Speaker 1: but uh never busy enough to miss Rod shirling in
- 10:38Speaker 1: the Twilight Zone and the non stop showing of some
- 10:42Speaker 1: of the greatest TV programs of all time. Speaking of
- 10:45Speaker 1: upstate New York state, if he was from Bington, New York,
- 10:48Speaker 1: Day finally put up a statue to his honor in
- 10:50Speaker 1: the park. Dep Boy, I'm moving in a lot of
- 10:54Speaker 1: different directions here because a true snow snowfall is determined
- 11:01Speaker 1: by whether you can make snowballs, whether it's packing snow,
- 11:04Speaker 1: because if it's too light, you can't make a snowfall.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Even if there's some accumulation, it's all about packing snow.
- 11:13Speaker 1: And already you heard the news reports are there. They're
- 11:16Speaker 1: moving out there with all the rock salt. They're spreading
- 11:20Speaker 1: it in advance. Why why you know is he where
- 11:22Speaker 1: the rock salt comes from? Do you have any idea
- 11:26Speaker 1: underneath Detroit? When I was in Detroit, they have canyons
- 11:31Speaker 1: under ground in which they're mining salt rock salt now
- 11:37Speaker 1: for de icing, But back then when I first saw it, leather,
- 11:42Speaker 1: food processing, all things underneath Detroit a thousand feet down.
- 11:47Speaker 1: I don't know if people will where are that. That's
- 11:50Speaker 1: where the salt comes from. And I'm saying, why are
- 11:51Speaker 1: you gonna throw salt on the ground. First of all,
- 11:54Speaker 1: it's gonna eat up the asphalt. Then you're gonna have
- 11:57Speaker 1: potholes of the size of lunar craters. And then while
- 12:02Speaker 1: you're driving along they already hate drivers in so many places,
- 12:05Speaker 1: especially New York City. Now you're undercarriage is gonna be
- 12:09Speaker 1: thrown out all of a sudden, Your bull bearings will
- 12:12Speaker 1: need adjustment, your trott will end up sort of becoming
- 12:18Speaker 1: bent into shape. You have to end up in a
- 12:20Speaker 1: fender bended shop. And a lot of that has to
- 12:23Speaker 1: do with it's sparing rock salt to ride. Why not
- 12:25Speaker 1: do what they do it up in Wisconsin where they're
- 12:27Speaker 1: used to actual snow or for Lake mission in Milwaukee.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Is they spread a combination of beats, Yeah, beats, a
- 12:39Speaker 1: brine or a cheese brine so that it doesn't end
- 12:45Speaker 1: up destroying the asphalt and creating those potholes which become
- 12:49Speaker 1: lunar craters. And by the way, then the deer come out.
- 12:54Speaker 1: That's the other problem in Wisconsin. The deer come out
- 12:56Speaker 1: and they want to lick up the beats and the
- 12:59Speaker 1: cheese offs, the asphalt, and boy, we saw a lot
- 13:04Speaker 1: of deer on all way down coming from Capital Land
- 13:08Speaker 1: last night. And I know for some of you you
- 13:11Speaker 1: look at deer as if it's agent Orange in hooves,
- 13:15Speaker 1: because they eat up everything like a pac Man packed woman.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Don't say that to my wife, Nancy, Oh my god,
- 13:24Speaker 1: you'd be going to war with her. Hey. Look, that's
- 13:26Speaker 1: just a little thumbnail sketch where I was and what
- 13:31Speaker 1: we were doing as a family. And also the information
- 13:36Speaker 1: that I learned on this lie hush hush, mush mush
- 13:41Speaker 1: about how key Republicans are working in tandem to destroy
- 13:47Speaker 1: the Republican Party as we know it in New York State,
- 13:51Speaker 1: New York City and actually turn it into a wing
- 13:54Speaker 1: of the old moderate Democratic Party. Well, you don't want
- 13:59Speaker 1: to go anywhere? Come on, are you gonna go anywhere?
- 14:02Speaker 1: All this information that I'm bringing to you, Like Paul Revere,
- 14:06Speaker 1: I'm warning you in advance, doing all the groundwork, And
- 14:10Speaker 1: now it's on your place to be seven ten wor
- 14:15Speaker 1: our favorite radio station in the SLIWA household. And yeah,
- 14:18Speaker 1: our cats love listening to it too, The Voice of
- 14:22Speaker 1: New York. The number is eight hundred three two one
- 14:24Speaker 1: zero seven ten. That's eight hundred three two one zero
- 14:29Speaker 1: seven ten
