- 0:22Hello and welcome to the Impact Ready podcast.
- 0:25I'm so glad you're here. Merry Christmas, team.
- 0:28Happy holidays. I took a couple days off to
- 0:31spend with my family around the Christmas holidays, so this
- 0:34podcast is coming to you a day late.
- 0:35I appreciate you being here and I hope that you had a great week
- 0:40with your family or your loved ones or whoever you like to
- 0:42spend time with around this time of year.
- 0:45We're getting towards the end of the holiday season.
- 0:47We're approaching the new year, which is always a time where
- 0:51people can feel a certain way. Maybe people are feeling a
- 0:54little frustrated or short tempered or, you know, they've
- 0:57packed a lot into the end of the year.
- 1:00There's been a lot of social activities, a lot of family
- 1:02time, hopefully good stuff. But we all know that we can feel
- 1:06tired towards the end of the year.
- 1:08People are partying a lot, there's a lot of social stuff.
- 1:12And so there's a lot of feelings.
- 1:14And I think what's funny is that this time we might not always
- 1:18see the best in people. I was just picking my teenagers
- 1:22up from the mall and being in the parking lot and having
- 1:26interactions with people in the parking lot.
- 1:28I can tell people are feeling a little frustrated, a little
- 1:31burned out and a little irritated by the fact that
- 1:34there's just a lot masses of humanity out in the world.
- 1:37Everybody's trying to get last minute stuff in.
- 1:39So this episode is about something that I've heard in the
- 1:44past. It's a theory that I've come
- 1:46across and I saw it again recently and I wanted to share
- 1:49it with you. It's called the Just one more
- 1:51minute theory. It's kind of a long time, the
- 1:54Just One More Minute theory, and I come back to this theory in
- 1:59times like this where nervous systems can feel a little shot
- 2:02and rest is hard to come by. I saw this theory posted
- 2:07somewhere again recently. I believe the author's name is
- 2:10Jordan Younger, but I wanted to share it with you because I
- 2:15think it can be helpful when we're entering a new year.
- 2:18We're sort of closing the loop on some things in this year and
- 2:21resetting our nervous systems. The Just One More Minute theory
- 2:26is an idea that acknowledges the temporary nature of things.
- 2:31We all know that things are temporary, that moments are
- 2:33fleeting, but this idea is about realizing that every single
- 2:38version of the people that you know, the people you love, and
- 2:42every version of you is fleeting.
- 2:45It's temporary. This moment that you're in right
- 2:48now listening to this podcast, it's temporary.
- 2:51The version of you that is navigating the moments that
- 2:54you're in now, The circumstances, the end of year
- 2:57temporary. The person who's trying to
- 3:00figure out what happened in 2025, to make sense of it, maybe
- 3:05to heal or to grieve or process, to shed old skins, to step into
- 3:10a new identity. The person who's grown out of
- 3:14some things or maybe is searching for meaning in what
- 3:19was what happened. That version of you will never
- 3:23exist in this exact form again. Temporary.
- 3:27Your spouse's laugh, their voice, the way they lean into
- 3:32one hip when they're standing in the kitchen, how they look when
- 3:35they first wake up in the morning.
- 3:37Their eyes when they're telling you a story, something that you
- 3:40might have heard hundreds of times before.
- 3:43That's something that will change, will shift.
- 3:48Your kids little quirks. They're small voices, their
- 3:53fight for independence as teenagers, the way they show you
- 3:57all of their new skills or ideas, the way they sidle up to
- 4:01you kind of quietly and conspicuously to get a hug.
- 4:04That is temporary. That will shift and change.
- 4:09Everything is in motion. Every person.
- 4:12Your parents, your friends, the people you serve in your work,
- 4:15your colleagues. They're all temporary versions
- 4:18of themselves, versions that will change and continue to
- 4:21evolve. And the just one More minute
- 4:23theory says this. If you were given one more
- 4:26minute with this exact version of somebody that you love, how
- 4:31would you treat the moment you're in now?
- 4:34I want to say it again because I think this is really important
- 4:37to think about, not just while you're listening to this podcast
- 4:40episode, but moving forward to use this as a filter sometimes.
- 4:45If you were given one more minute with this exact version
- 4:48of someone you love, how would you treat the moment that you're
- 4:51in right now? Would you put your phone down
- 4:54and look right into their eyes? Would you listen without
- 4:58thinking about your next response or trying to be right,
- 5:02or your next item on the To Do List?
- 5:05Would you smile at them and pay attention to all the details of
- 5:09them? Would you memorize something
- 5:12that you know you'll miss later? And even in conflict or in
- 5:17trauma, would you pause and just recognize the magic of who that
- 5:22person is right now? It would most likely be a
- 5:25reminder that this moment was small, yes.
- 5:28Fleeting, yes. But important, but precious.
- 5:32Sacred instead of forgettable. And fast.
- 5:37Now I want to call it the distinction here because we
- 5:39always talk about the distinctions, what it is and
- 5:41what it isn't and what this isn't.
- 5:44It's not about urgency, it's not about scarcity.
- 5:47It's not Oh my God, we're never going to have this again.
- 5:50It's not that energy. This is not coming from a place
- 5:53of lack or fear. This is about reverence, team
- 5:56reverence. We talk about reverence for
- 5:58life, reverence for the beautiful moments.
- 6:01If we slow down and we we feel the reverence.
- 6:04That's what this is about. It's an it's an awareness that
- 6:07the present moment here that we're in is sacred.
- 6:09It's special, it matters. And it could be the last time
- 6:12that will ever look exactly like this.
- 6:15And oftentimes we don't know when that will be.
- 6:18You know, you hear parents talk about I there's always a last
- 6:21time. There's a last time that your
- 6:23kids say a cute little word that they say in a funny way when
- 6:27they're young, when they're toddlers.
- 6:29There's a last time that they want to hug their little lovey
- 6:32at night. There's a last time that they
- 6:35need you for a certain thing. And now they're independent.
- 6:38There is always that last moment.
- 6:40And to have the awareness that this present moment is sacred,
- 6:44that's so special. It's so important.
- 6:47Now, I recognize that it's hard to be 100% present in every
- 6:51living moment. I mean, just think about the
- 6:53last month. I'm sure that it was full for a
- 6:57lot of you. I'm sure that some of these
- 6:58moments feel fast and furious and sometimes we we do feel
- 7:02tired or depleted or checked out even.
- 7:05But I know for me, there are many more moments that I could
- 7:10have reverence for. I know that I have the tendency
- 7:13to live in my head a little bit, that I have the tendency to be
- 7:16forward thinking, really examining or thinking or
- 7:20analyzing what the future might look like and preparing and
- 7:23planning for that. I know that I can go to those
- 7:25places in my head. There are more moments that I
- 7:28could have reverence for. I could be more present.
- 7:31I could be more in awe. I could be more in grace with
- 7:34the version of the person who's standing in front of me or
- 7:37myself. I could be more in grace with
- 7:40the version of me. Wouldn't that be a gift?
- 7:44There are a lot of people sleepwalking through their days.
- 7:47That's the truth. And I know you see that.
- 7:49I know you notice it. There are a lot of people who
- 7:51are sleepwalking through their days.
- 7:53And it just made me realize how much of life people live half
- 7:58present. And I think it's because we
- 8:00assume we'll get another chance. But this theory, that Just One
- 8:03More Moment theory helps us recognize that these moments
- 8:08matter and that the versions of who we are becoming might look
- 8:12back and whisper, God, I wish I had paid attention to all those
- 8:16past moments. And so this is a reminder to you
- 8:20that wherever you are, whatever the circumstances, however you
- 8:23might be closing out this year, think about the Just One More
- 8:27Moment theory. And whoever's standing in front
- 8:30of you, can you be present with them?
- 8:33Can you take in and appreciate what is here now?
- 8:36And especially with yourself looking in the mirror and
- 8:39saying, man, this version of me, I can really appreciate who I am
- 8:43right now. I can appreciate all she is
- 8:47dealing with, all she is wrestling with, all she is
- 8:50moving through and all she is anticipating.
- 8:54That is such a gift to yourself. So that's all for today.
- 8:58I hope that this inspires a little bit of thinking.
- 9:00I hope that it helps you get through this last week or so of
- 9:05this year, 2025, with a little more joy and fulfillment and
- 9:09excitement because this version of us right now, it's beautiful.
