- 1:21Speaker 3: I hope you guys are having a I have one
- 1:25Speaker 3: for Ghostbusters week is phenomenating that swept the box offices
- 1:34Speaker 3: back in nineteen eighty four, that Mark's this week get
- 1:40Speaker 3: premiered and there any of you guys out there, it's
- 1:48Speaker 3: you know, back then in nineteen eighty four, Watchtadam a
- 1:52Speaker 3: theater or did you have to wait a little bit me?
- 1:57Speaker 3: You know, I'm the nearest theater with send five was away.
- 2:01Speaker 3: So you know, if I'm the only one who wants
- 2:05Speaker 3: to watch it, you know, no one else wants to
- 2:09Speaker 3: watch it. I was sort of out of luck. But
- 2:13Speaker 3: I didn't really get to see it in theater. But
- 2:16Speaker 3: I got introduced by a friend of mine that growing up,
- 2:21Speaker 3: we always go over to her house and you know,
- 2:25Speaker 3: a bunch of us will you know, either play in
- 2:28Speaker 3: a pool or you know, play games or whatever, and
- 2:32Speaker 3: and uh, She's like, well, you know what, let's watch movies.
- 2:36Speaker 3: I got a good movie to watch and happens to
- 2:40Speaker 3: be Ghostbusters. Back then, before DVDs. If you're as old
- 2:46Speaker 3: as I am, and you know, the young guys are like, well,
- 2:49Speaker 3: what's a VHS? But back in the day, movies came
- 2:54Speaker 3: out of vhs. They didn't come in on DVDs as
- 2:57Speaker 3: they do now or now Blu Ray, but they came
- 3:01Speaker 3: out of, you know, a VHS cassette. It was basically
- 3:06Speaker 3: a big, old large cassette tape and you put plug
- 3:11Speaker 3: it in a VCR and and uh, that's how we
- 3:16Speaker 3: watched it. And I got the I think I got
- 3:20Speaker 3: the bug when I watched it because it was it
- 3:22Speaker 3: was a cool movie. I mean, I love, you know,
- 3:25Speaker 3: the paranormal and even though I'm sensitive as well and
- 3:29Speaker 3: had my own ghost stories and and uh, it was
- 3:34Speaker 3: really awesome. And in fact, this uh, during the Ghostbusters week,
- 3:41Speaker 3: I ended up watching the first one and I got
- 3:45Speaker 3: to watch uh as an empire, So that was awesome.
- 3:50Speaker 3: And I hope you guys get to watch any of
- 3:54Speaker 3: the Ghostbusters films and and enjoy the phenomena that you know,
- 4:00Speaker 3: started this craze and happy to be part of it.
- 4:05Speaker 3: So today's episode was brought to you by was submitted
- 4:13Speaker 3: by a longtime viewer. She emailed me and requested this
- 4:23Speaker 3: story and I looked into it and it's pretty awesome.
- 4:30Speaker 3: So our viewer today that brought this story today, her
- 4:38Speaker 3: name is Kelly. So I hope I give this story justice.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Thank you for sminding this wonderful story to me, Kelly,
- 4:48Speaker 3: and I hope you enjoy it. So let's sit back, relax,
- 4:56Speaker 3: hutter with your loved ones or cuddling that wonderful armchair.
- 5:01Speaker 3: It's time for yeah, as our story begins. And do
- 5:14Speaker 3: you know as we uh we're young and either in
- 5:20Speaker 3: elementary school or even take now take our kids to
- 5:25Speaker 3: the park and into the playground. I mean you know
- 5:29Speaker 3: they peaceful uh in a park and start hearing uh.
- 5:34Speaker 3: You know, the kids play.
- 5:35Speaker 4: In the park a playing tag and and.
- 5:49Speaker 3: You know it's I don't think nothing of it. You
- 5:51Speaker 3: know it's a place. And but this place is a
- 6:02Speaker 3: very unique place. Today's story is called the Legend the
- 6:12Speaker 3: Alabama's at Children's playground. You know they they called the
- 6:18Speaker 3: dead Children's playgrounds actually known as Maple Hill Park. It's
- 6:24Speaker 3: in Huntsville, Alabama. And what unique portion of this unique
- 6:31Speaker 3: uh playground SIT's the historic Maple Hills Cemetery that's jacent
- 6:37Speaker 3: to his playground. I mean it looks like any other
- 6:41Speaker 3: playground featuress future, modern swing sets, uh dunal jams, you
- 6:50Speaker 3: know anything that monkey bars, et cetera. You know, normal playground.
- 6:57Speaker 3: But this playground is unlike any other. Passersby often say
- 7:03Speaker 3: they could see the swings moving on their own on accord,
- 7:08Speaker 3: as well as herbs and spectral figures. The playground is
- 7:14Speaker 3: surrounded on three sides by limestone that formed by many
- 7:20Speaker 3: caves in the area, giving in a shallowed appearance as
- 7:27Speaker 3: leads itself to a spooky legends Approximately to the historic cemetery,
- 7:33Speaker 3: it doesn't hurt either. Local teens called it the Dead
- 7:39Speaker 3: Children's Playground mcbray name for a place still used by family.
- 7:46Speaker 3: So how did the innocent place get its grus name?
- 7:50Speaker 3: According to legend, many children who died in Huntsville during
- 7:56Speaker 3: the nineteen eighteen Spanish flute pandemic were buried in the
- 8:01Speaker 3: maple heeled plots adjoining to the playground. The spirits of
- 8:07Speaker 3: those children, some say, came out after dark to run
- 8:12Speaker 3: and play, as they might might have had have done
- 8:17Speaker 3: in real life. Online search turns up photos of unexplained
- 8:24Speaker 3: shadows and orbs. It is true many children, as well
- 8:30Speaker 3: as adults died during the worldwide panademic a killed estimate
- 8:36Speaker 3: of fifty million people worldwide and hit Huntsville, Alabama, particularly hard.
- 8:44Speaker 3: The hospital beds were filled, the doctors were working long
- 8:48Speaker 3: shifts and in hopes of seizing Some of the patients
- 8:54Speaker 3: are easing some of the patient's misery. Many patients who
- 8:59Speaker 3: were treated as at home a large quarantine signs on
- 9:03Speaker 3: the doors, practice which resulted in the disease spreading through
- 9:09Speaker 3: the entire families. These were often stacked on wagons and
- 9:15Speaker 3: hard by moors by horses to try to prevent the
- 9:19Speaker 3: spread of the disease being continued or contained. Children to
- 9:28Speaker 3: lead their window or cushion, children to leave their windows close,
- 9:33Speaker 3: windows closed. They even said a song and rhyme that
- 9:38Speaker 3: was that was a reminder. It goes this bo I
- 9:44Speaker 3: had a bird. His name was Inza. I opened the
- 9:49Speaker 3: door and in flew Inza. According to Alabama Department of
- 9:57Speaker 3: Public Health, the a deadly flu arrived in Alabama by
- 10:03Speaker 3: a way of Huntsville on September twenty fifth, nineteen eighteen.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Within ten days, they had spread the general population. The
- 10:13Speaker 3: Alabama DHP brought it on October fifth, arca from bringing him.
- 10:21Speaker 3: News reported cases of Spanish influenza have increased to more
- 10:27Speaker 3: than one thousand, one hundred in Huntsville, accorn to doctor
- 10:33Speaker 3: ca Through Health Officer of Medicon County, there have been
- 10:40Speaker 3: an additional three hundred cases and seven deaths for the
- 10:44Speaker 3: past twenty four hours on October seventh, the Governor of
- 10:49Speaker 3: Alabama or to the closure of the public places statewide
- 10:54Speaker 3: and cleaned stores, schools, churches. This kind and sounds a
- 11:00Speaker 3: little familiar, knowing it almost like COVID was. I guess
- 11:07Speaker 3: we haven't won our lesson. By October thirteenth, the Braham
- 11:12Speaker 3: News was reported that only one local pharmacist and one
- 11:17Speaker 3: local doctor remained unaffected. A desperate situation exists in Huntsville
- 11:24Speaker 3: growing out of the Spanish influence epidemic. All druggists, physicians,
- 11:30Speaker 3: and prescription thirds except one have been instructed with the
- 11:37Speaker 3: disease and this distrusting apparel reaching Montgomery last night in
- 11:46Speaker 3: telegrams for media help for the sicken city. Although there
- 11:52Speaker 3: was no official count of the number of children who
- 11:55Speaker 3: died in Huntsville during the pandemic or how many were
- 11:59Speaker 3: bad in Maple Hill, the number must have been in
- 12:03Speaker 3: the hundreds. And that was that's crazy and several arm
- 12:11Speaker 3: you know places from you know, houses and cemeteries. You
- 12:18Speaker 3: know the counter that goes in the heart of Dixie.
- 12:21Speaker 3: And also with that, you know, you get the cemetery
- 12:25Speaker 3: as well as according to the Cemetery Department, that the
- 12:30Speaker 3: number could be as high as one hundred thousand soldiers.
- 12:35Speaker 3: During the World War Civil War, nearly two hundred Confederate
- 12:40Speaker 3: soldiers were buried there, addition as many Union soldiers in
- 12:46Speaker 3: the cemetery as well. And you know that, and when
- 12:51Speaker 3: they put this playground here, you know that many have
- 12:57Speaker 3: reported sounds of laughter, children call out they were as
- 13:02Speaker 3: they're not strong enough. Set of people are scovered orbs
- 13:06Speaker 3: of light at the Chiln's playground folls after having them
- 13:13Speaker 3: developed very strange indeed, and you know I was a
- 13:19Speaker 3: cemetery used to be a tweaku plant sold to a planner,
- 13:28Speaker 3: the Ray Pope, a Huntsville founder, and it grew some
- 13:36Speaker 3: sophistically over time, and the cemetery expanded through the land
- 13:42Speaker 3: purchases knowly in eighteen seventy three to as accommodate Huntsville's
- 13:50Speaker 3: growing population. The construction of the playground was The playground
- 13:58Speaker 3: officially named those part sites adjacent to the cemetery, surrounded
- 14:04Speaker 3: by old beach trees and limestone foundations. It's good nickname
- 14:11Speaker 3: stems from Chilen, and urban legends have proceeded for decades.
- 14:18Speaker 3: It was constructed in nineteen eighty five to build a
- 14:24Speaker 3: space for children while families visited the graves. The playground's
- 14:29Speaker 3: location near the bare sites sparked airy tails. Two thousand
- 14:36Speaker 3: and seven, the city attempted to mold the playground for
- 14:41Speaker 3: a cemetery expansion, while the public of Huntsville pretty much
- 14:48Speaker 3: protested and had an outcry, and later on it was
- 14:58Speaker 3: it led to the rio stret the real restoration of
- 15:02Speaker 3: the playground and they end up putting new equipment on
- 15:10Speaker 3: there and new stuff new still equipment, and it's also
- 15:17Speaker 3: known as one of America's most haunted parks. It attracts
- 15:21Speaker 3: paranormal enthusiasts, du spokey lore and also in nineteen sixties,
- 15:28Speaker 3: local hotels claiming children is abducted in the nineteen sixties
- 15:32Speaker 3: were found near the playground. Will no official records fornfirmed this.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Visitors report sings being on their own children's after orbs
- 15:45Speaker 3: as we said, especially between ten and three am. I
- 15:51Speaker 3: wonder why. The Alabama Paranormal Society in two thousand and
- 15:54Speaker 3: eight investigators captured a misty figure in a photo after
- 16:01Speaker 3: hearing a female voice adding to the Lord, my families
- 16:05Speaker 3: are used or could use the playground during the day.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Modern equipment like the Swings Jungle gyms, but the gates
- 16:14Speaker 3: are locked after dark, possibly to detour the trespassers due
- 16:19Speaker 3: to paranormal service. You know, there's a lot of factors
- 16:25Speaker 3: that they try to find the science behind it. Most
- 16:30Speaker 3: see I believe it's uh, you know, the limestone is
- 16:36Speaker 3: a conductor with a paranorm It's like a you ever
- 16:42Speaker 3: put like ten like tinfollow some something on a nord
- 16:49Speaker 3: antenna to boost the signal. It's almost like that limestone
- 16:54Speaker 3: is are like a booster and the signal and would
- 17:01Speaker 3: you know mimic the Ghostlee phenomena, and you know, you know,
- 17:10Speaker 3: random voices are heard. And there's been a lot of
- 17:16Speaker 3: books on as well, author James Kene's novel The Dead
- 17:21Speaker 3: Children's Playground, which you nazes the site as part of
- 17:26Speaker 3: American Horse Stories, and some residents dismissed the hunting, while
- 17:32Speaker 3: others embraced the lord, making it a team hanging out
- 17:36Speaker 3: and ghost hunter magnic. I would love to go there
- 17:40Speaker 3: and check it out. And they also when it was
- 17:46Speaker 3: preserved the community, you know, even though it has a
- 17:52Speaker 3: spooky name, but they they went for it, and I'm
- 17:57Speaker 3: glad they brought it back, and there's also places I
- 18:04Speaker 3: guess they do tours they tell you to or or
- 18:12Speaker 3: you have to obtain permission to visit at night, as
- 18:16Speaker 3: trespassing can lead to fights and arrests. And make sure
- 18:21Speaker 3: you get proper authorization to go visit there, don't just
- 18:26Speaker 3: go there. That's a good tip. And they do have
- 18:31Speaker 3: ghosted tours provides contrast safe and access to the sites
- 18:38Speaker 3: and also bringing flash sights cameras EF meters if you
- 18:44Speaker 3: have them or get them, can enhance paranormal investigations. And
- 18:54Speaker 3: that's pretty And as I was looking there, there's been
- 18:57Speaker 3: a lot of people that have you know, had some
- 19:01Speaker 3: stories and here's one said and counted it ghost there
- 19:07Speaker 3: Once while walking my great day with some friends, we
- 19:12Speaker 3: were spooked at spooked a f but eventually we discovered
- 19:19Speaker 3: it was just a gardener dressed up as scare people are.
- 19:24Speaker 3: He almost got away with it too, little inside joke
- 19:28Speaker 3: there currently there's one hand and then I used to
- 19:31Speaker 3: go there as a board team back in the early
- 19:34Speaker 3: two thousands. Honestly, never was never was at least creeped
- 19:41Speaker 3: out little enclave, though if I remember correctly, over ten
- 19:47Speaker 3: years ago, all my old friends pulled a prink there
- 19:51Speaker 3: by Titian fishing line. These swings are hiding nearby. They
- 19:57Speaker 3: lived for another group of friends to arrive a see
- 20:00Speaker 3: the swings set in motion by an invisible force. Pretty
- 20:05Speaker 3: sure the friends weren't only the ones blowing the branks there.
- 20:11Speaker 3: There's some people that you know. Let's see, this happened
- 20:16Speaker 3: aile decade ago last, so my memory might be a
- 20:21Speaker 3: little foggy, but give the weep experience a go. A
- 20:26Speaker 3: girl I was dating at the time took me to
- 20:30Speaker 3: the DCP because I'd never been there before, but I
- 20:35Speaker 3: heard rumors that I was haunted. He pulled up. We
- 20:39Speaker 3: pulled up a bit before dark and hung out by
- 20:43Speaker 3: strung through the cemetery because she thought the cemetery and
- 20:48Speaker 3: the cemeteries in general was a peaceful place. We wanted
- 20:52Speaker 3: back to the playground as as sun began to set.
- 20:57Speaker 3: We hung around the playgrounds until dark. We walked around
- 21:01Speaker 3: the playground a bit uncause she noticed small lights at
- 21:05Speaker 3: the far end of the park. You were just a
- 21:08Speaker 3: handful that they were fluttered in the air like lightning bugs.
- 21:15Speaker 3: But that's where convinced they were until I realized they
- 21:19Speaker 3: were They were bluish when trying to explain them away,
- 21:28Speaker 3: I suggest maybe it was car headlights reflecting through the trees,
- 21:33Speaker 3: and probably a few other maintained things like that. We
- 21:38Speaker 3: watched a few minutes, maybe a minute or two, until
- 21:42Speaker 3: she came visibly nervous and uneasily when we jumped or
- 21:49Speaker 3: jumped in her car and somewhat cisly GTFO. I guess
- 21:56Speaker 3: we got the We got the f out of there.
- 22:00Speaker 3: This was a long time ago. Were both somewhat vivid imaginations.
- 22:07Speaker 3: I could have seen those had been some kind of
- 22:10Speaker 3: and explained like her frippery are pinsters or might have
- 22:17Speaker 3: been some trippy no firefights. He didn't know. He's been
- 22:24Speaker 3: that himpule of times. But I haven't seen nothing yet.
- 22:28Speaker 3: There's one that fat eye that as one of the
- 22:34Speaker 3: one of the people was there that she was walking
- 22:38Speaker 3: down the in the on the playground and the airthing,
- 22:45Speaker 3: and she noticed that one of the swings were the
- 22:49Speaker 3: swings are swing and there was no wind, and she
- 22:54Speaker 3: knows one of the swings were swinging a little bit.
- 23:00Speaker 3: We're swinging higher than the other one was and there
- 23:04Speaker 3: was no way and no nothing, and uh that's uh,
- 23:08Speaker 3: there's some of the you know, some of the stories there.
- 23:11Speaker 3: But if anyone's been out, been there and want to
- 23:16Speaker 3: drop the line, you can email me at the Paranormic
