- 0:00Tad Eggleston: Haven't had any yet.
- 0:02Tyler Johnson: Hey, everyone. Welcome back to 22 Panels, the podcast that aims to discover.
- 0:08Tyler Johnson: I forget what it is. Just go.
- 0:10Phil: or…
- 0:10Tyler Johnson: I don't know. Eg.
- 0:12Tad Eggleston: Salmon.
- 0:13Tyler Johnson: Examine, explain it.
- 0:15Tad Eggleston: Explore and elevate or explore, examine and elevate. It's all ease.
- 0:23Tyler Johnson: Yep, ye.
- 0:24Phil: Discover, dissect, and deconstruct? I don't know.
- 0:29Tyler Johnson: Demonate.
- 0:30Phil: Disseminate. There we go. We're publishing.
- 0:33Tyler Johnson: Guys, here's the thing. It's been a couple weeks, and I literally did have a brain fart right there. I didn't do that on purpose. Anyway, this is Tyler, and across the interwebs from me.
- 0:44Tyler Johnson: is Tad and Phil. Good morning, guys. How are you?
- 0:48Phil: I was about to say, you sound like a dentist.
- 0:50Tyler Johnson: A what.
- 0:51Tad Eggleston: I, I was, I was out at a, South Bend Cubs game last night, and, and…
- 0:59Tad Eggleston: And they won by a lot.
- 1:02Phil: Mmm.
- 1:03Tyler Johnson: So, Salvin is also the Cubs?
- 1:05Tad Eggleston: It's, it's their, their high A minor league team.
- 1:09Tyler Johnson: Got it, got it.
- 1:11Tad Eggleston: Umm.
- 1:13Tad Eggleston: So, so, it was it was it was nice to.
- 1:20Tad Eggleston: This is my, my,
- 1:22Tyler Johnson: Your happy place.
- 1:23Tad Eggleston: Well, well, yeah, but it was also, it was also my, my birthday present from my wife was, was,
- 1:32Tad Eggleston: a trip out to… to my aunt and uncle's lake house, and… and tickets to the South Bend game, and new baseball cap, because I don't have nearly enough baseball caps.
- 1:44Tyler Johnson: Wearing it right now.
- 1:45Tad Eggleston: I am. It's my new Ernie Banks baseball cap. Perfect.
- 1:50Phil: For those… for those questioning, whether or not Tad actually, does not own enough baseball caps, I've never seen him
- 1:57Phil: Not in a baseball cap.
- 1:59Tyler Johnson: And not only that, it's mostly a different one every time.
- 2:02Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I was about, I was about to say, and how often have you seen me wear the same?
- 2:07Phil: I…
- 2:08Tyler Johnson: I agree.
- 2:09Phil: I've yet to… I don't have a hat tracker for you, but I'm sure it'd be very interesting if I were to start one.
- 2:15Tyler Johnson: Guys, when I leave the house, I almost always wear a hat, mostly because my head gets burned really easy, but right now, it's 7.42. I'm, you know, it's not really my thing to wear a hat when I'm at home, but… so you guys don't see me this way, but I am also a big hat person.
- 2:33Tyler Johnson: You guys just get the message.
- 2:34Phil: Too stressy.
- 2:35Tyler Johnson: You get the privilege of seeing me, you know, right out of bed.
- 2:38Tad Eggleston: Well, you don't wear.
- 2:39Phil: We all hear.
- 2:40Tad Eggleston: Store, either.
- 2:41Tyler Johnson: What's up?
- 2:43Tad Eggleston: You don't wear them at the store either.
- 2:46Tyler Johnson: No, I wear hats outside almost only.
- 2:48Tad Eggleston: Right, right, right.
- 2:49Tyler Johnson: I just… it's just kind of… I don't know if it was a polite thing, like, my mom would be like, take your hat off in the house.
- 2:56Tad Eggleston: Or…
- 2:56Tyler Johnson: whatever.
- 2:57Tad Eggleston: My grandma used to be like that. And when she was alive, I was slightly better at taking it off certain places.
- 3:04Tyler Johnson: So… And foot.
- 3:06Tad Eggleston: I'd always feel really uncomfortable.
- 3:08Phil: And honestly, I really think that, like, societally, we should allow special dispensation for people who never take their hat off, you know? Like, I…
- 3:17Phil: I think it's fine. I think it's fine if you're someone who just never takes their hat off, to not take your hat off when it's considered quote-unquote polite. It's like, sorry.
- 3:25Tyler Johnson: Hold on, I've got a non-baseball cap here, let's see, what do you guys think of.
- 3:32Phil: Tyler put on a fedora and it is not a 7 a.m. look, that is for sure. You look like you're ready for the nightclubs or to investigate a hot scoop.
- 3:46Tyler Johnson: Especially when I got one ear on my,
- 3:48Phil: Yes.
- 3:49Tyler Johnson: One ear listening to you, Phil, because I, yeah, anyway, wearing a hat.
- 3:54Phil: Dj X Factor, coming at you live.
- 3:57Tyler Johnson: Take that, X Factor.
- 4:00Tyler Johnson: here's the thing, my mom was like that, where we'd come in the house, and she'd be like, boys, take your hats off, please. And that's all she would say. So it just became habit. When I walk in the house, it comes off.
- 4:12Tyler Johnson: so, yeah, I don't know. I.
- 4:15Tad Eggleston: I get that.
- 4:16Tyler Johnson: It's, you know, but yeah, when I leave the house, it's almost always a hat and it's not, not that fedora. I bought that just to see if I, I mean, it was kind of one of those things where you go, Hey, is it time to start wearing a fedora? Nope.
- 4:29Phil: Every 20 years, that question rolls back around.
- 4:34Tyler Johnson: So I own one, but I have never worn it publicly, so…
- 4:37Phil: It's probably for the, let's keep it that.
- 4:41Tyler Johnson: I like… I like hats, though. They're fun
- 4:43Tyler Johnson: Anywho, I am fine with taking on and off my hat, because it doesn't mess up my hair, right? That would be the thing that I would be most self-conscious of, is whether my hair looked horrible or not.
- 4:56Tyler Johnson: You know?
- 4:57Phil: Exactly. And to my point.
- 4:59Phil: I would rather just keep looking at someone's hat than their…
- 5:03Phil: You know, permanent hat hair, you know, it's just.
- 5:06Tyler Johnson: Yeah, Chad, I can only assume when you go to school, your hair is crazy.
- 5:10Tyler Johnson: Because you've got a lot of hair.
- 5:12Tad Eggleston: You're you're assuming I take off the cap at school.
- 5:14Phil: That's what I was about to say. I assume he has the cap on through school.
- 5:18Tyler Johnson: You get to. Oh, that sucks. That sucks. My whole school career, student and teaching with no hats. But then again.
- 5:26Tad Eggleston: Yeah, as a student, I wasn't allowed to wear a hat, but I am allowed to wear it now.
- 5:33Tyler Johnson: Oh, that's crazy. That's awesome. That's awesome. But I'm jealous.
- 5:37Phil: Yes.
- 5:39Tyler Johnson: Alright guys, let's talk about some comic book stuff.
- 5:43Tyler Johnson: We've gone off on a hat.
- 5:45Tyler Johnson: Rant, which is fine. It's cool.
- 5:48Phil: Our first haberdasher tangent? I don't know.
- 5:52Tyler Johnson: I love it. So what's Ignition Day? I don't even know what this is.
- 5:59Tad Eggleston: Oh, Ignition is a publisher. How do you not know Ignition?
- 6:03Phil: Well, he d Mission day.
- 6:05Tyler Johnson: Oh, I read it wrong.
- 6:06Tad Eggleston: Day and date. Got it.
- 6:08Tyler Johnson: Right, right.
- 6:09Tad Eggleston: Sweet, Sweet Shop is, is,
- 6:13Tad Eggleston: Sweet Chap is one of the, the… The three major players for.
- 6:21Tad Eggleston: digital comics right now. Okay. And, and, and currently, I mean, it's, it's mostly in beta.
- 6:30Tad Eggleston: So it's not… you can get on the list to be a, you know, have beta access. It's not 100% available to everybody yet. No.
- 6:41Tyler Johnson: I'm looking it up right now, and you can get on the early access waiting list.
- 6:45Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 6:46Tyler Johnson: Looks cool.
- 6:48Tad Eggleston: I already have in, I just, I forget if they have an Android app, or whether they're only Apple right now.
- 6:57Tyler Johnson: I… I know what Ignition is, the publisher. I thought it said Ignition Day, and I'm like, oh, that's weird, what's Ign.
- 7:03Tad Eggleston: No, no, but their comics are now available.
- 7:09Tad Eggleston: That's pretty sweet. On release day.
- 7:11Phil: Last time I.
- 7:12Tad Eggleston: Literally through Sweet Shop.
- 7:13Phil: Sweet Shop, most of what I saw on there was image stuff, so…
- 7:18Tad Eggleston: Well, and they were the first ones to get images.
- 7:20Phil: Okay.
- 7:21Tad Eggleston: Indeed.
- 7:22Phil: Okay.
- 7:22Tyler Johnson: There's more now. I'm looking at it right now. Mad Cave, Panic Entertainment, Oni, White something, White Ash Comics, IDW, Invader Comics, Manga Mavericks, Devil's Due, Fantagraphics. Let's see who else they got here.
- 7:41Tyler Johnson: Living the Line, Avery Hill, Ablaze, of course, Ignition, Silver Sprocket, Good Trouble Comics.
- 7:50Phil: Oh, it's a lot of.
- 7:51Tyler Johnson: Yeah, it is a lot. Dark horse?
- 7:53Tad Eggleston: Well, they had a number of these signed on before they… they had even… Gone live, so,
- 8:07Tad Eggleston: I I I don't. I don't know where.
- 8:11Tad Eggleston: I don't know when you must have looked to not see… A decent amount of it?
- 8:17Phil: It was months ago. It was a while ago, and I definitely did not explore super hard. I mostly looked at the, like.
- 8:23Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 8:24Phil: Flashy advertisements at the time.
- 8:27Tad Eggleston: Right. Cause, like, they had Image signed on before they launched.
- 8:32Phil: Oh.
- 8:33Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 8:37Tad Eggleston: So, yeah. You know, it's just… I don't think Ignition had been… I mean, it had been available digitally through SweetShop already, but… but…
- 8:48Tad Eggleston: because it wasn't day and date, it was…
- 8:53Tad Eggleston: It was more of a, it was available, some of it was available, like when, when they go day and date.
- 9:03Tad Eggleston: it essentially means that you have everything when it comes out. I mean, I'm even okay when it winds up being things like, like,
- 9:16Tad Eggleston: When there's, like, a specific moratorium.
- 9:19Tad Eggleston: You know, like, you get things a week later. Where it's annoying is when you don't know when it's coming out. Right.
- 9:28Tad Eggleston: And there there previously there hadn't been.
- 9:32Tad Eggleston: Hadn't been a clear timeline on a lot of stuff.
- 9:36Tad Eggleston: or on things from ignition.
- 9:40Tad Eggleston: So, so yeah, it's, it's cool that they're, I mean, I kind of hope that we continue having multiple platforms. What I really, really hope is that at some point you buy it one place and you can read it any place.
- 9:53Phil: Oh.
- 9:55Phil: That would be pretty snazzy, but
- 9:57Tad Eggleston: Thank you.
- 9:58Phil: Hmmm.
- 10:00Tad Eggleston: Because then it would be a lot more like a real comic, and it would maintain a level where the platforms had to compete with each other.
- 10:12Tyler Johnson: The early… the early…
- 10:13Tad Eggleston: Rather than trying to just knock something out.
- 10:16Tyler Johnson: You know, before we had streaming music, we had to download each individual
- 10:22Tyler Johnson: track, essentially. Right. And you could play those on multiple types of things. They were MP3, so all you had to find was an MP3 player. Right.
- 10:33Tad Eggleston: they started doing digital rights management.
- 10:35Tyler Johnson: Yes. Yep.
- 10:37Tyler Johnson: And so, well, but these.
- 10:38Tad Eggleston: already have digital rights management.
- 10:40Tyler Johnson: I know, I'm just saying that it.
- 10:41Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 10:42Tyler Johnson: I'm gonna go back to multi-platform.
- 10:44Tad Eggleston: Well, but it's also like because of a lawsuit.
- 10:49Tad Eggleston: You know, you, you have the, the, the movies anywhere where.
- 10:55Tad Eggleston: where… you know, movies you purchased are available across.
- 11:05Tad Eggleston: Platforms.
- 11:06Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 11:07Tad Eggleston: does. Though I wonder if Amazon is now getting away with not contributing to that, because if you look at… when you buy a digital thing through Amazon now, it specifically says you're buying a license to blah blah blah.
- 11:21Phil: Thank you.
- 11:22Tad Eggleston: Umm.
- 11:23Tad Eggleston: But like, again, like, I, I think, I think it's good for.
- 11:28Tad Eggleston: Business, and will, in the long run, be good for even these businesses, if rather than competing to knock each other out, they're just competing for customers.
- 11:40Tyler Johnson: Yeah, yep.
- 11:41Tad Eggleston: That that that might go Multiple directions, and back and forth, and, like… R- rather than competing for
- 11:51Tad Eggleston: All of your business, they're competing for what chunk of your business they can get, I think.
- 11:56Tad Eggleston: Would be more sustainable.
- 11:59Tad Eggleston: Then… then another comixology rules the world.
- 12:04Tad Eggleston: And then gets bought by some big company and then shitified.
- 12:08Tyler Johnson: Yeah, of.
- 12:09Tad Eggleston: You know. Yep.
- 12:11Tad Eggleston: So we'll see but but it's it's been it's been interesting to watch
- 12:17Tad Eggleston: Also really cool…
- 12:19Tad Eggleston: Particularly because… because they'd had to go to Kickstarter for Volume 3, because Dark Horse hadn't…
- 12:26Tad Eggleston: hadn't wanted to publish it, Kyle Starks and Peter Kowalski's Where Monsters Lie Omnibus is… is going to be coming out from Dark Horse, and it will include
- 12:38Tad Eggleston: Volume 3.
- 12:40Tad Eggleston: So, it's not quite the Wilco getting dumped by their record label, only to…
- 12:49Tad Eggleston: release their album free online, drum up so… so much… so much publicity that a subsidiary of their record label buys them back.
- 13:03Tad Eggleston: We'll go sold Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, too.
- 13:08Tad Eggleston: To Warner Brothers, essentially, twice. Warner Brothers paid for it, decided not to release it.
- 13:14Tad Eggleston: But then none such was Warner Brothers owned, came and paid for it again.
- 13:20Tad Eggleston: to release it.
- 13:22Tad Eggleston: Because, you know.
- 13:23Tad Eggleston: That's how it works sometimes.
- 13:26Tad Eggleston: And man, whoever at Warner Brothers decided that Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was not an album worth putting out… God.
- 13:34Tad Eggleston: Fucking morons.
- 13:38Tad Eggleston: He's just nodding. He's like, I like my music louder and less understandable. Yep, that's pretty much it. That's pretty much it.
- 13:46Phil: Spiritual format. There's some Wilco that just came on on my phone. It's because I resort to algorithmically finding music so rarely. Every once in a while, I'm like, you think I like this? And Wilco was kind of one of those. Although I have listened to.
- 14:03Phil: Billy Bragg and Wilco, because I grew up listening to a lot of B.
- 14:06Tad Eggleston: I mean, I like Billy Bragg and Wilco, but I fucking love Wilco. That's OK. Of course I'm.
- 14:12Phil: They do, they really do.
- 14:13Tad Eggleston: I'm from Chicagoland, so it's, it's like.
- 14:16Phil: They're one of.
- 14:18Tad Eggleston: It's kind of like being from Minnesota, you're just required to love prints.
- 14:24Phil: Correct Well, I think everyone.
- 14:26Tad Eggleston: It's not an option.
- 14:27Phil: Difference.
- 14:28Tyler Johnson: I agree.
- 14:29Phil: Yeah.
- 14:30Tyler Johnson: Phil, we have…
- 14:31Tad Eggleston: Minnesota?
- 14:32Phil: It's an extra.
- 14:33Tad Eggleston: It's just, it's like an injection at birth.
- 14:36Tyler Johnson: Also, northern Minnesota, where Bob Dylan was born, up there in Duluth, it's all Bob Dylan shit. Right. Same thing.
- 14:45Phil: Does everyone talk like him? Is it like you walk into a shop and everyone's like, yeah, how's how, how are you?
- 14:50Tyler Johnson: No, but.
- 14:51Tad Eggleston: I mean, I was in Duluth recently, so no.
- 14:54Tyler Johnson: No, but yeah, Prince though, I mean, like, yes, it is a very big thing here. Like, especially like First Ave, which was his club in the Twin Cities. It's really popular right now because it's Prince's club, you know?
- 15:11Tad Eggleston: I mean, it's just, like, yeah. Prince… Prince is the god of Minnesota.
- 15:16Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 15:17Tad Eggleston: And yes, he did exist.
- 15:18Tad Eggleston: There's… there's evidence.
- 15:21Phil: Yes.
- 15:22Phil: Yes. I actually…
- 15:24Tad Eggleston: A couple things I love about Prince,
- 15:28Tad Eggleston: Ca- ca- cause I, I like.
- 15:32Tad Eggleston: And I already knew this about him, but I've come across a couple more examples of it.
- 15:40Tad Eggleston: Recently, like, aside from just being, like, a ridiculous musician.
- 15:47Tad Eggleston: So, like, one of the great examples of that is he felt snubbed by Rolling Stone because they hadn't listed him among the top 100 guitarists.
- 15:59Phil: Cool.
- 16:00Tad Eggleston: Of of all time.
- 16:01Tad Eggleston: and he was part of the group.
- 16:07Tad Eggleston: Playing.
- 16:09Tad Eggleston: While my guitar gently weeps…
- 16:12Tad Eggleston: In a George Harrison tribute at, at.
- 16:17Tad Eggleston: the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with a couple of guitarists who were considered top 100.
- 16:23Phil: Mmh.
- 16:24Tad Eggleston: And, and with Jan Winner, who was the, the.
- 16:28Tad Eggleston: The editor of Rolling Stone and therefore, you know.
- 16:31Tad Eggleston: And like, go watch the YouTube of that, like, he.
- 16:36Tad Eggleston: like…
- 16:38Tad Eggleston: And apparently, like, like I found an oral history of it, apparently, like, he hadn't really participated a ton in, in practice.
- 16:47Tad Eggleston: In rehearsals and whatnot, so, like, there were only a few people who knew what was gonna happen, and clearly, because, like, there was a point where he just threw his guitar, and, and, you know, it got caught.
- 17:00Tad Eggleston: In the rafters and just never came down.
- 17:03Tad Eggleston: You know, that sort of thing.
- 17:07Tad Eggleston: But,
- 17:09Tad Eggleston: Yeah, he, he, he did the total mic drop shred.
- 17:14Tad Eggleston: Destroyed everybody.
- 17:17Tad Eggleston: Love that Right.
- 17:20Tad Eggleston: But, also… Like, when he, he played the Super Bowl, which is like, a short.
- 17:30Tad Eggleston: Short enough that it's like generally, I mean, first of all, like.
- 17:34Tad Eggleston: Watch his Super Bowl half-time show, hands down, the best Super Bowl, except for possibly this recent Bad Bunny one. Like, this is the first… Bad Bunny is the first time that there's one that I even feel like is in the discussion.
- 17:50Tyler Johnson: We're.
- 17:51Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Right.
- 17:52Tyler Johnson: I see.
- 17:52Tad Eggleston: He had a tight, like, 15-minute set, it was starting to rain, and he managed to, like, just work that into it.
- 18:01Phil: Oh.
- 18:02Tad Eggleston: But also, like.
- 18:05Tad Eggleston: Decided to do covers for no apparent reason.
- 18:08Tad Eggleston: I mean, there was… there's no reason to do it. But not just, like, classic covers, because he did, like, All Along the Watchtower and a couple other… but he also did Foo Fighters Best of You.
- 18:18Tyler Johnson: Cool.
- 18:18Phil: We do.
- 18:20Tad Eggleston: In his medley.
- 18:22Tyler Johnson: Okay, guys, let's keep going. Right. We are, we are,
- 18:26Tad Eggleston: We're, we're, well.
- 18:27Phil: Until we have the Prince comic biopic.
- 18:31Tad Eggleston: Well, there is one. Plus there's Minneapolis sound sound that Joe Illich wrote and his talk.
- 18:36Phil: Rocket.
- 18:37Tad Eggleston: That involves,
- 18:39Phil: Okay.
- 18:40Tad Eggleston: Prince, Prince. But no, the other thing that I was gonna bring up before I fell completely off my tangent is I came across a Letterman channel that has a lot of
- 18:54Tad Eggleston: Letterman music performances, Letterman interviews and whatnot, like…
- 19:00Tyler Johnson: Everything from Letterman was awesome, except for his, you know, weird affair with somebody on the set.
- 19:07Tad Eggleston: Right, but, but anyway, prince came on and played a song.
- 19:14Tad Eggleston: that, that, like, Letterman's holding up the CD before announcing it, and he's like, which, which he told me they don't plan on releasing, so I don't know why they're here, but okay.
- 19:27Phil: Thank you.
- 19:27Tad Eggleston: We don't turn down prints!
- 19:30Phil: Right? That's funny.
- 19:31Tad Eggleston: And apparently it did get released like exactly one year later. Oh, funny. That's funny. Just like, yeah, he did things his way and he was like.
- 19:45Tad Eggleston: Super cool, multiple, multi-instru- I mean, like, just one of the great users of Spotify.
- 19:50Phil: Would donate money anonymously to schools and stuff like that. Yeah, he sounded like a really great dad. Really great guy.
- 19:57Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah. So anyway.
- 20:00Tyler Johnson: Did you guys ever make it a thing, Tad, you might more than feel, that you had to tune in to Letterman when he had a band you liked on?
- 20:08Phil: I've never been really a late night show.
- 20:11Tad Eggleston: I…
- 20:12Tyler Johnson: I did.
- 20:12Tad Eggleston: Some. We're enough older that late night was actually like.
- 20:17Tad Eggleston: I agree.
- 20:18Phil: Cold still.
- 20:18Tad Eggleston: You've done… well, you've done a ton… well, it's still kind of original, but as soon as it's on YouTube, you don't have to tune in.
- 20:26Phil: I said a ritual.
- 20:28Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:30Tyler Johnson: Yeah, because I watched… because here's the thing, when I was younger, I stayed up later, so I watched Letterman every night at 10, right? And then Friday nights, he would have bands that I liked. And so I really did pay attention to who was on Letterman that week, because…
- 20:45Tad Eggleston: Right, the other thing…
- 20:47Tyler Johnson: SNL as well.
- 20:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, the other thing I discovered from from just doing stuff on the Letterman channel, like one of the most famous moments of.
- 20:58Tad Eggleston: From a Pearl Jam fan perspective.
- 21:02Tad Eggleston: Is like Eddie coming out of nowhere as, as, as Dave is, is like, like his band is playing just the, the, the.
- 21:15Tad Eggleston: The chorus of… Black and, and, and Dave is just going, why, why, and then Eddie Vedder walks out.
- 21:26Tad Eggleston: And does that part and then you're just like Holds it a ridiculously.
- 21:32Tad Eggleston: Long time, you know, the note that, and then walks out. What I hadn't realized until I saw the clip on the Letterman site is
- 21:42Tad Eggleston: Letterman had been doing that.
- 21:46Tad Eggleston: for months.
- 21:48Tad Eggleston: and telling Paul Schaefer, we gotta get Eddie on, you know, I love this song, you know.
- 21:56Tad Eggleston: So, so, like, when it happened, it wasn't like he'd made a one-off, oh, I wish I could, I could see Eddie Vedder, or it wasn't the inside joke coming up on the air. It had been an on-air thing.
- 22:09Tad Eggleston: four months. Wow. With him going, why? Why? You know, like, what I'd previously only seen is, like, a minute and a half video, because that's how long it was with Eddie involved.
- 22:23Tad Eggleston: on Letterman is, like, a seven-and-a-half-minute video, and it's six minutes that involve, like, various times over time before Eddie shows up with Paul and… and…
- 22:34Tad Eggleston: and David talking about that one song, and David badly singing it, and…
- 22:42Tad Eggleston: And that was kind of a cool thing. What kind of week has it been? Well, on the funny side.
- 22:49Tyler Johnson: I don't think we talked.
- 22:50Tad Eggleston: Dam.
- 22:51Tyler Johnson: Starks. Chad, I don't think we talked.
- 22:53Phil: No, he did.
- 22:54Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 22:54Phil: He did!
- 22:55Tyler Johnson: Okay, sorry, I missed… I must have missed that.
- 22:58Phil: That's what spun up this whole tangent of, of, of, that led us to Wilco, that led us to Prince, that led us to Vetter.
- 23:05Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:05Phil: Oh, now we're on to what week is… what kind.
- 23:07Tyler Johnson: Okay, I'm sorry, I thought it was all tied into the Ignition thing, and…
- 23:12Tad Eggleston: No, no, no.
- 23:13Tyler Johnson: I'.
- 23:13Tad Eggleston: What does Ignition have to do with Wilco's album being bought twice?
- 23:19Phil: Was.
- 23:20Tyler Johnson: No, no offense, Tad, but what did any of that have to do with any notes?
- 23:24Phil: Well, I'm.
- 23:25Tad Eggleston: Oh, I can draw you the strip. I'm sure you can.
- 23:29Tyler Johnson: That's okay, I want to keep going. Isn't Ign.
- 23:32Phil: a Pearl Jam song or album or something like that? I'm thinking. Sorry, that's that's gonna. No.
- 23:38Tyler Johnson: I know. Okay.
- 23:39Phil: Oh.
- 23:39Tad Eggleston: In fact, I think it is an album, but it's not from somebody we want to, like…
- 23:46Phil: Oh, I don't… I don't care about anyone other than Pearl Jam for that joke. That's okay, we can worry about what kind.
- 23:52Tad Eggleston: No, it's a very famous song from somebody who's currently in prison.
- 23:58Phil: Oh, lovely. Okay, I'll I'll try not to.
- 24:02Phil: Google that.
- 24:06Tad Eggleston: Probably his only more famous song involves him being trapped in a closet.
- 24:11Phil: I didn't realize it was in print. Okay.
- 24:16Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 24:16Tyler Johnson: Okay, what kind of weeks has it been?
- 24:19Tad Eggleston: We want the funny part or the, or the, or the fucked up.
- 24:22Phil: Oh.
- 24:22Tad Eggleston: I mean, the funny part is just everything going on with our Strait of Green Ooze.
- 24:29Tyler Johnson: Greetings.
- 24:30Phil: Do we have Ninja Turtles deployed in Iran right now? Is that why it's a Strait of Green O.
- 24:35Tad Eggleston: No, it's not about… it's not… it's not Iran, it's the reflection… the ref…
- 24:40Phil: Oh, that Lincoln Memorial. There we go.
- 24:44Phil: Nice! Okay, okay. That is clever. That is very clever.
- 24:47Tad Eggleston: I wish I could take credit for it. I forget, I forget who got that going.
- 24:51Phil: No, that's good. That's really I mean… I do like that.
- 24:55Tyler Johnson: This has to be the stupidest thing I've ever heard, as far as, like, how his actions have destroyed the water, and then all of.
- 25:04Phil: Wow.
- 25:04Tyler Johnson: And then all these crazy, accusations against the left, out to, out to, make him look bad.
- 25:13Tad Eggleston: Two things that need to be pointed out.
- 25:16Tad Eggleston: But…
- 25:18Tad Eggleston: Like he's come up with this idea that somebody took a knife or a box cutter and cut a 300 foot or 350 foot section of it. But but go back a month to when he's talking about it and he talks about how what the stuff they're putting on is so strong and so good that you can't even cut it with a knife.
- 25:39Tad Eggleston: Wow. You need a box cutter for that.
- 25:41Tad Eggleston: So the only person who's talked about a knife is him to begin with and and originally it was how you couldn't cut it with a knife but second there are like
- 25:51Tad Eggleston: there's at least one Blue Sky account from somebody who, like, does this shit for a living, that… that a month ago, before water was put back in, was looking at what was being put in.
- 26:06Tad Eggleston: Researching the supplies they were using, etc, and predicted what was going to happen exactly, and explained why.
- 26:16Phil: Incredible. Absolutely incredible.
- 26:18Tad Eggleston: It's almost like people who deal with big fountains.
- 26:23Tad Eggleston: Knew better than the pool guy who also donated $300,000 to.
- 26:31Phil: Oh.
- 26:31Tad Eggleston: campaign.
- 26:32Phil: The Mar-a-Lag.
- 26:33Tad Eggleston: I mean, one has.
- 26:34Phil: Mobster.
- 26:35Tad Eggleston: One does have to say that's a hell of a return on your investment. $300,000 to the campaign for a $14 million no bid contract.
- 26:46Phil: Yep.
- 26:47Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 26:48Phil: Yep, wow.
- 26:49Tad Eggleston: I mean, that's… That's like…
- 26:52Phil: It's… I am… I am… I am… I, I…
- 26:57Tad Eggleston: That that's a that's a a 52,000%
- 27:03Phil: I'm even, I'm even
- 27:04Phil: Oh, math can't even make this better. I… I am… I am just, like, shorting out right now at just the blatant…
- 27:12Phil: corruption on display. It's almost like one of these, you know, I just, I…
- 27:18Phil: I struggle to fathom it. I struggle to fathom just, like.
- 27:22Phil: I mean, I know it's been going.
- 27:24Tad Eggleston: They.
- 27:24Phil: for, like.
- 27:25Tad Eggleston: See, here's the thing, though.
- 27:27Tad Eggleston: And this… and this plays into…
- 27:30Phil: -H.
- 27:30Tad Eggleston: Our other, what kind of week has it been? Huh.
- 27:34Tad Eggleston: It's not corruption if you're a Republican.
- 27:39Phil: Oh, okay. Okay.
- 27:42Tad Eggleston: Republicans aren't corrupt.
- 27:44Tyler Johnson: Oh no.
- 27:45Phil: Really?
- 27:46Phil: Is the sarcasm thick enough? That's the question.
- 27:49Tad Eggleston: If, if Republicans do it.
- 27:52Phil: You did.
- 27:53Tad Eggleston: right way. It's fine.
- 27:55Tyler Johnson: It's fine if they do it.
- 27:57Phil: It's they're they're going full Nixon as a party.
- 28:01Tyler Johnson: Oh, no. Nixon knew he was doing wrong.
- 28:03Tad Eggleston: Oh my god, they are… I'm thinking of…
- 28:06Phil: Thank you very.
- 28:07Tad Eggleston: So far beyond what Nixon had even hoped for. Correct.
- 28:12Phil: I still remember back in his first term, Trump was referred to as more Nixon than Nixon, you know?
- 28:18Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, and and and now we're.
- 28:21Phil: Now we're in… in this fucking mess. Which, by the way, the… the… what I… what kind of week has it been that I thought you were gonna mention was, how Spencer Ackerman very, very quickly predicted the, quote-unquote.
- 28:37Phil: Peace Treaty signed last week was not actually bad.
- 28:41Tad Eggleston: I mean that.
- 28:41Phil: And, and, yeah, very, very quickly turned back into.
- 28:44Tad Eggleston: Well, and by the way, like, even if we'd had the peace treaty, it was essentially…
- 28:51Tad Eggleston: Their unconditional surrender was, we keep our nuclear materials. We still promise not to make a bomb, but there's no oversight.
- 29:02Phil: Cheers.
- 29:02Tad Eggleston: By the way, they promised not to make a bomb, like, 40 years ago, so that hasn't, like, changed, right? Yeah. We promise we're not making a bomb, but no oversight. We get to keep our missiles. Trump's even… even…
- 29:17Tad Eggleston: even justified that. Well, you can't let Arabia have missiles, and, you know, they gotta be able to defend themselves. We get to keep our missiles. The Strait of Hormuz is ours.
- 29:30Tad Eggleston: And you're going to give us a.
- 29:34Tad Eggleston: boatload of money.
- 29:36Phil: Yeah, and…
- 29:37Tad Eggleston: That is MAGA for Unconditional.
- 29:40Phil: Yes.
- 29:41Tad Eggleston: Sur.
- 29:41Phil: And that's where I'm… I am just…
- 29:44Phil: I'm also irritated at all the political cartoonists who are making jokes like, oh, Trump is just bringing back the Obama deal that he killed, and it's like, no, this is significantly worse!
- 29:55Phil: This is…
- 29:57Tad Eggleston: No, e.
- 29:57Phil: So much information.
- 29:59Tad Eggleston: If he brought back the Obama deal.
- 30:01Phil: Hu.
- 30:01Tad Eggleston: It would…
- 30:02Phil: It would be.
- 30:02Tad Eggleston: I haven't seen enough of these cartoons to know, like, whether there's… because cartoonists sometimes, like, try to hide some of the subtext, you know, like, is it putting lipstick on the pig of the Obama deal that he used to think
- 30:21Tad Eggleston: Was was terrible. Is it? Is it like you? You know that there's so many.
- 30:28Tad Eggleston: So many ways that you could go with that.
- 30:31Tad Eggleston: Yeah. But yeah, no, SCOTUS this week,
- 30:36Tad Eggleston: decided that like a Hawaii law that said you couldn't bring a gun onto private property without permission of the property owner was unconstitutional.
- 30:51Tad Eggleston: It… it decided that… They could…
- 31:03Tad Eggleston: revoke temporary protected status on Haitians and… and other stuff, because
- 31:10Tad Eggleston: Because none of their reasons were racist at all, and you know this because… because in the opinion saying that none of their reasons were racist, and that they'd reviewed the…
- 31:23Tad Eggleston: the… the statements made by the President and Kristi Noem and whatnot, and none of them were racist, and this was colorblind, they… they did not actually quote any of…
- 31:36Tad Eggleston: the things.
- 31:38Phil: Mmm.
- 31:41Tad Eggleston: Which… Which Justice Sotomayor might have called Alito out on from the bench.
- 31:48Tad Eggleston: Hmm hmm hmm.
- 31:51Tad Eggleston: Which led to… Most people believe the first ever.
- 31:57Tad Eggleston: On-bench rebuttal of a… of a dissent.
- 32:04Tad Eggleston: The thin skin Alito had trouble and of course.
- 32:08Tad Eggleston: Mind you.
- 32:09Tad Eggleston: In his concurrence.
- 32:12Tad Eggleston: to either this one or the other one, and, like, the other… there was another immigration-type one that was equally bad. But in… in… in his concurrence.
- 32:24Tad Eggleston: Justice Thomas made it very, very clear.
- 32:29Tad Eggleston: That he would have gone farther.
- 32:32Phil: Wow.
- 32:35Tad Eggleston: Just so everybody knows.
- 32:37Tyler Johnson: That's crazy.
- 32:38Tad Eggleston: They still haven't announced their opinion on birthright citizenship.
- 32:44Tad Eggleston: I… I am fearing that they're trying to find some way to… to…
- 32:50Tad Eggleston: to declare unconstitutional the words in the Constitution.
- 32:58Tad Eggleston: Let's say anyone born.
- 33:01Tad Eggleston: In the United States!
- 33:06Phil: Yeah, that is something else. All right.
- 33:08Tad Eggleston: I mean, the… the… the conventional wisdom is that that will be the one that they… they give… give Trump a… a… a loss on, and… and that…
- 33:19Tad Eggleston: that they're saving it for last, so that everybody doing their Supreme Court write-ups, like, ignores all of the other shitty decisions to say, see, they're… they're…
- 33:30Tad Eggleston: Artisan.
- 33:32Tad Eggleston: They didn't, they didn't rule against this.
- 33:36Phil: I just…
- 33:37Tad Eggleston: Literally.
- 33:38Tad Eggleston: word-for-word unconstitutional thing. This is where I will toss out that the, Joy, Resistance, Hope, and Survival book club this month is Constitution Illustrated. You should join in, anybody and everybody, go read yourself a copy.
- 33:55Tad Eggleston: Check out R. Sikoriak's amazing art and, and, and, Declaration of Emancipation Illustrated comes out on Wednesday.
- 34:05Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Let's get to New to Order Comics, because I took up enough time with the, the, the, the prints…
- 34:12Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 34:13Tad Eggleston: Let me give you the through line. It was… it was…
- 34:16Tad Eggleston: it was… if you're from Chicago, you have to like Wilco, which led to… if you're from Minnesota, you have to like Prince.
- 34:26Tyler Johnson: Mmhm.
- 34:28Tad Eggleston: And Wilco came up because Dark Horse is now printing the thing that they wouldn't print just like Warner Brothers dumped Wilco.
- 34:37Tyler Johnson: Yeah, Chad.
- 34:38Tad Eggleston: And then bottom.
- 34:38Tyler Johnson: So can we please move on?
- 34:42Tyler Johnson: I'm not trying to be rude, but I have to keep us going, man. I totally get it.
- 34:50Tad Eggleston: You said you didn't know where it came from.
- 34:53Tyler Johnson: It's…
- 34:54Tad Eggleston: You haven't.
- 34:55Tyler Johnson: said that. Yeah.
- 34:56Tad Eggleston: I was going to say, you haven't learned yet that I have to respond to things.
- 35:01Phil: We're into comics. We're back to.
- 35:03Tad Eggleston: New to order this month, initial orders due July 23rd. I'm gonna do three in a row, baby.
- 35:09Tyler Johnson: There you go.
- 35:10Tad Eggleston: to shut up for a little bit. Batman Bad Seeds Gotham Central number one from Christopher Cantwell and Jacob Phillips.
- 35:19Tad Eggleston: Final order cut off of August 17th in store September 9th. The killer is on the loose. Someone is stalking Arkham Tower's Dr. Zeller. The subways are out of control and anarchies just pulled a big time heist with Vandal Savage diverting the GCPD's resources to a single-minded war against the bats and the bat family.
- 35:40Tad Eggleston: trying to stop Poison Ivy while evading the GCPD, there's almost no one left to do actual police work. Looks like officers Gordon and Espinoza have their work cut out for them.
- 35:53Tad Eggleston: Again, final order cut off of August 17th in store September 9th. Also final order cut off of August 17th in store September 9th is Batman Bad Seeds Gotham Central number one.
- 36:06Phil: General.
- 36:06Tad Eggleston: I'm sorry, Gotham General, number one. I said Gotham Central because Greg Rucka had previously done Gotham Central. Gotham General, number one, from Greg Rucka and Rosa Ekedal. Welcome to…
- 36:20Tad Eggleston: General Gotham City's tier one trauma center. Power is out, fires are burning, transpo is shot, and the calls just keep coming. There are more patients than beds, half presenting with respiratory complications, the other half suffering hallucinogenic psychotic episodes in every other emergency department.
- 36:39Tad Eggleston: This would be a catastrophe for Dr. Ava Dastur and the men and women working at General.
- 36:45Tad Eggleston: It's a Tuesday.
- 36:49Tad Eggleston: And finally, Batman, Superman, Weird Al.
- 36:53Tad Eggleston: World's Weirdest, number one from Mark Wade, Weird Al Yankovic, and Dan Schoning. The fifth dimension is being hit with an affliction that burns everything dull and ordinary, but is mi-ci-plick?
- 37:10Tad Eggleston: reaches.
- 37:12Tad Eggleston: out to Superman and Batman for help, the same plague has hit Earth. There's only one person to call.
- 37:18Tad Eggleston: Weird Al.
- 37:21Phil: If Weird Al doesn't say his name backwards by the end of the issue.
- 37:24Tyler Johnson: Oh.
- 37:25Tad Eggleston: Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo.
- 37:28Tyler Johnson: How do you pronounce… mixuplix? What? How do you pr.
- 37:31Phil: I've always gone with Mitchell Pitlick, something like that.
- 37:34Tad Eggleston: I think it is mixes mix.
- 37:39Tad Eggleston: Is… Pitlick.
- 37:40Phil: Well, we run out of, we run.
- 37:42Tad Eggleston: I think you actually… I think you actually pronounce… I think you actually pretend there's an I.
- 37:49Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 37:49Tad Eggleston: There needs to be a vowel.
- 37:51Tyler Johnson: I've always pronounced it Mixalpix, but, or Mixalpix, but I don'.
- 37:55Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 37:55Tyler Johnson: I don't have a clue, so yeah.
- 37:57Phil: The joy of comics being non-verbal.
- 37:59Tad Eggleston: Mixes zip.
- 38:01Tyler Johnson: If you were a literary, right, if you're writing, why would you create a name that everybody on Earth is going, how do you say that?
- 38:09Phil: Well, it becomes a sight word.
- 38:11Tyler Johnson: I guess.
- 38:12Tad Eggleston: And also because… because, like… It's it like it goes with the character.
- 38:20Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 38:21Tad Eggleston: If you can't say it forwards, saying it backwards is really…
- 38:25Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 38:27Tad Eggleston: Yeah, okay.
- 38:28Tyler Johnson: I just miss the days where they would, like, name somebody, like, overly obvious names, like, the Riddler, he tells riddles, you know?
- 38:36Phil: I don't see who!
- 38:38Tyler Johnson: Who does he know?
- 38:41Tyler Johnson: Or the penguin, he looks like a penguin, you know?
- 38:45Tad Eggleston: Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo.
- 38:48Tyler Johnson: Alright. That's awesome, though. Batman and Weird Al. Alright, Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees Halloween Special.
- 38:56Tyler Johnson: From Patrick Horvath
- 38:58Tyler Johnson: Patrick Horvath joins forces with James Tynion IV, Tony Fleeks, Che Grayson, Dave Wachter, Jared Cullum, Tyler Boss, and Matt Emmons for an original one-shot set in the world of Beneath the Trees, where nobody sees. Years have passed since Samantha Strong left Woodbrook.
- 39:15Tyler Johnson: But her legend has only grown. Now that the cat is out of the bag, more and more horrific murders have been tied back to her. Some are doing, some are her doing, others mere folklore, but all absolutely gripping stories, featuring everyone's favorite cuddly serial killer.
- 39:34Tyler Johnson: Final order cut off will be August 31st, and this will be in shops October 7th.
- 39:43Tyler Johnson: Looks good. My next one, oh, I've got two in a row. Dinner date, from Joanne Slater, or Stero.
- 39:51Tad Eggleston: Dare. Yeah.
- 39:51Tyler Johnson: Terror, and Kiri Randolph from Ignition.
- 39:55Tad Eggleston: Kari as in Atari.
- 39:57Tyler Johnson: Okay, Kari Randolph.
- 39:59Tyler Johnson: Modern dating is rough. No one likes being on the apps, but it's not much easier meeting people in real life, especially when they might turn into a vampire without warning. This is exactly what happened to Sid.
- 40:12Tyler Johnson: She was only trying to get over her toxic ex, whom she may still drunkenly text from time to time, not looking to have her life totally changed. She thought finding the right guy before was hard, but now she has an unquenchable thirst for blood. Her dating pool has suddenly become her food chain.
- 40:31Tyler Johnson: Meanwhile, Izzy has been trying to make her dreams a reality in the Big Apple.
- 40:36Tyler Johnson: Though right now, she's part of the gig economy, working as a rideshare driver.
- 40:41Tyler Johnson: When Sid ends up in the back of Izzy's car, there is an instant connection. Is this love at first sight, or will it all end with one bite? Final order cutoff is August 31st, and this'll be in stores October 7th.
- 40:59Tyler Johnson: Holy buckets! I got 3 in a row.
- 41:01Phil: We're doing block scheduling now.
- 41:03Tyler Johnson: Yep, okay.
- 41:04Phil: Okay.
- 41:05Tyler Johnson: My next one, EC, Cruel Kingdom, volume two, number one, from, David Boor, Ryan Kelly.
- 41:14Tyler Johnson: Always remember, heavy is the head that wears the crown, unless the king is about to get it lopped off.
- 41:20Tyler Johnson: Welcome, traveler, back to the blood-trenched ramparts of ye olde EC comics that yearns for more tales of sadistic sorcery and malevolent magic. Yes, draw your sword and start swinging, because Cruel Kingdom lives again with an all-new volume of Fatal Fantasy.
- 41:38Tyler Johnson: Told in the immortal EC Comics manner by a magnificently malicious cast of all-star storytelling,
- 41:46Tyler Johnson: Telling. In this cruel kingdom, there is no happily ever after, and sometimes the witch hunter becomes the hunt… witch hunter becomes the hunted in the end. Heh heh.
- 41:57Tyler Johnson: This will be, out from ONI Press. Final order cutoff is July 27th, and will be in shops September 2nd.
- 42:07Phil: All right. Next up, we've got Forever Home number one from Christian Ward and Sammy Cavella over at ONI. They have all the time in the world. Will it be enough to save them?
- 42:19Phil: Prepare to challenge the limits of time, technology, and human endurance itself, as one family's refuge from the end of the world becomes a mind-bending nightmare reaching far beyond the future. Inside, time stands still. But outside, something even worse than the apocalypse waits. Famed scientist Henry Damore tried to save the world.
- 42:37Phil: He failed, but in a desperate bid to save himself, his wife, and their two children, he constructed the Forever Home, an arc of luxury and ultramodern convenience insulated from the agony of the planet's death throes outside its walls and even time itself. Inside the Forever Home, only 20 minutes pass for every year on the outside, allowing the Damore family to slowly enact their plans for a new world as their automated environment and
- 43:01Phil: Robotic companions keep them safe, safe on the inside, always inside until a child.
- 43:07Phil: until a childish misstep accidentally breaks the Forever Homes barrier, and what's outside decides it wants back in. It's gonna have a final order cutoff of August 3rd in store September 9th from Oni Comics.
- 43:23Phil: Next up, there is a new chapter in Hellboy in Hell. Nothing but blood number one from Mike Mignola and Cyril Palmas at Dark Horse.
- 43:35Phil: The Hellboy steps in to save a young woman being chased by winged beasts deep in hell in the midst of an uprising against the most powerful demons. But nothing and no one are what they seem to be. With a final order cut off of August 31st.
- 43:49Phil: 31st, in stores, October 7th, first new stories for Hellboy's Time in Hell in several years, so I might actually pick that one up.
- 43:58Phil: And then there is It Demands Sacrifice, number one, from Philip Gallant and David Yarovesky and Adam Paulina over at Bad Idea.
- 44:10Phil: Here we go. I did not trim this one on a quiet farm.
- 44:15Phil: On a quiet farm, Bronson, the youngest and smallest member of a close knit family of goats.
- 44:22Phil: lives an idyllic life of sun-drenched fields, fresh hay, and sibling rivalries. His greatest concern is proving to his older siblings, and more importantly, his
- 44:32Phil: His imposing father that he is more than the runt of the herd. Then, in a single night, everything changes. A drug fueled, sex obsessed, satanic hippie murder cult descends on the farm, slaughtering the family who raised and protected the goats before abducting Bronson and his loved ones. Deep in the wilderness, beneath the blood red mood, hundreds of cult followers gather for an ancient ritual. Their purpose to sacrifice the goats and summon a ravenous demon from beyond.
- 44:57Phil: That's gonna have a final order cutoff of August 24th, in-store September 23rd. Once again, from Bad Idea.
- 45:05Phil: How about some graphic novels, Tyler?
- 45:08Tyler Johnson: All right, graphic novels. Ted doesn't get to speak anymore. No, I'm kidding. We just keep skipping his. This one I picked because my daughter has started to like these stories. This is the Babysitter's Club Super Special from Anne M. Martin and Raina Telgemeier. Gail Gallagher.
- 45:25Tad Eggleston: And Gail Galligan.
- 45:26Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 45:28Tyler Johnson: and Gail Galligan. New York Times best-selling authors Raina Telgemeier and Gail Galligan team up and return to the Babysitter's Club.
- 45:37Tyler Johnson: Christy, Claudia, Marianne, Stacy, Dawn, Mallory, and Jesse are the luckiest babysitters in the world. This summer, they're going on what is sure to be the best vacation ever. A plane ride to Florida, a cruise to the Bahamas on an extravagant ship.
- 45:53Tyler Johnson: And then back to Florida for 3 days of fun at a huge amusement park.
- 45:57Tyler Johnson: The BSC has a million adventures, of course, and they still have time for what they like best of all, which is babysitting.
- 46:06Tyler Johnson: Final order cut off August 10th, and this is going to be in shop September 16.
- 46:12Tyler Johnson: Had beast mode.
- 46:14Tad Eggleston: Beast Mode 510 from Sheldon Allen and Dennis Cowan.
- 46:19Tad Eggleston: Dennis Cowan and Dexter Vines at AWA. Beast Mode is Oakland's legendary fixer. He's a freelance sleuth whose rough demeanor conceals a heart of gold. If you're from the 510 and have a problem that the authorities won't deal with, or if, like, they are the problem.
- 46:36Tad Eggleston: Beast Mode will fix it with his thoroughly unique blend of brains and brawn.
- 46:42Tad Eggleston: But when Beast Mode tries to pull off a super secret surprise birthday party for his mother, he finds himself dragged deeper into a spiraling, interconnected global conspiracy involving three missing young women, a Silicon Valley slavery ring, Yakuza assassins, reptilian billionaires, a million dollar bounty on his head, a world economy shattering takedown, and so much more.
- 47:03Tad Eggleston: Beast Mode is a true man of the people who stands 10 toes down for four things only. His family, his city, his Kush, and his Henny. But Buddy just can't catch a break this week.

- 48:07Phil: In a future rebuilt from the ashes of war, belief is no longer sacred. It's monetized. Humanity has entered a hard won age of stability, governed by an unholy alliance between global corporations and newly engineered religions. Worship fuels the economy. Faith is power. Salvation is a product. Welcome to the industry of belief. That fragile balance shatters when the old gods return.
- 48:30Phil: Ancient deities of fire, wind, jaguars, love, war, and mischief awaken inside ordinary people, transforming neighbors and strangers into living gods. To the powers that be, they aren't miracles, they're threats.
- 48:43Phil: The great faiths of the new world knew the old gods could one day return, and they planned for such an eventuality. Twelve orphans were chosen, bestowed with gifts and taught to be faithless, loveless instruments without reward or remorse. The old gods have returned, and the twelve will be unleashed. As old myths collide with a world built on manufactured faith, a brutal conflict ignites, one that will decide who controls humanity's future.

- 50:12Tyler Johnson: This will be, final order cut off of August 17th, and in shop September 15th.
- 50:22Tad Eggleston: I, just read the… the… advance of this, Forever, by Brian Brown, Brian Box Brown at IDW Top Shelf. Why say goodbye? Death is only a temporary glitch in this eerily plausible future.
- 50:37Tad Eggleston: Brenda's mom is dying, but not for long. Like millions of others, she's uploaded her consciousness to the groundbreaking new app Forever, which allows the surviving family members to chat with her on their screens for a very reasonable monthly fee. Now, Brenda's dad doesn't have to be alone while Brenda and her girlfriend focus on building their careers as wilderness survival

- 51:21Phil: Sorry about that. Hodo by Yongshin Ma at Drawn and Quarterly. "At first there was lake, and then there was island. Or was it the other way around?
- 51:33Phil: A story told in two parts, it is up to the reader to determine where they'd like to begin this eerie journey. Based on a true story that Yongshin Ma felt compelled to help share, together these two parts are Hodo, the story of a painter whose hard and dark past is brought to life with sensitivity and authenticity. Lake.
- 51:52Phil: Hodo is haunted by her mother and stepmother, her classmates, a neighbor, and yes, literal ghosts. She is also five years old.
- 52:00Phil: Through masterful cartooning, we see a child's despair in the face of pervasive violence and her confusion as to why bad things keep happening to her. We see the edges of her desperation begin to appear. Island.
- 52:13Phil: Hodo is haunted by her past, a friend's suicide, her sister's heartbreaking yet unsurprising betrayal, and yes, literal ghosts, still.
- 52:22Phil: Though through masterful cartooning, we see a woman reckoning with her past and the shadow it has cast on her adulthood. But we also see her develop her artistic practice and witness her determination to find herself through her paintbrush. Because despite the incredible pain, POTO is a story of light in the dark, a story of hope.
- 52:40Phil: It's going to have a final order cutoff, so cutoff of August 17th, in stores September 15th.

- 53:11Tad Eggleston: Confident, assertive, and basically the girl of Luis's dream. She might be the only person who understands him, if only he had any free time to spend with her.
- 53:20Tad Eggleston: Amid the chaos, Luis starts carving out his own path, but when trying to be the son his parents need, clashes with the life he wants. - 53:40Tad Eggleston: August 31st in stores on September 30th.
- 53:44Tad Eggleston: Some collections, Tyler.

- 53:59Tyler Johnson: They're the dominant form of life, or not life, on Earth. They've developed their own cultural practices, their own language, their own society, all organized around hunting and devouring the few living humans, unluckily enough, to still be fighting for survival.
- 54:15Tyler Johnson: Mouse pokes golf ball through hole in the head, poke for short, is a valued and beloved member of the brain splashes and sizzles on Hot Rock's hoard of the undead.

- 54:48Tyler Johnson: Final order cutoff is August 10th, and will be in shops October 20th.
- 54:55Tad Eggleston: This series has been so good.
- 54:57Tyler Johnson: I am wearing a Bleeding Hearts-type shirt. It's not related to the comic books. However, it is a Texas Chainsaw Massacre t-shirt that says, I heart TX with a chainsaw coming through the… through the shirt. It's pretty awesome.
- 55:13Tad Eggleston: Alrighty.
- 55:14Tad Eggleston: The Cardicelli and Perillo Collection, Stefano Cardicelli and Francesca Perillo at Mad Cave. Complete collection of all four critically acclaimed Mad Cave comic series from the wonderfully creative minds of Stefano.
- 55:26Tad Eggleston: Cardicelli and Francesca Perillo includes Don't Spit in the Wind, Love Me, A Romance Story, Long Cold Winter, and Where Does the Rainbow End? The latter three of which have been
- 55:37Tad Eggleston: talked about many, many times on this show, so I'm very, very happy to have all four of them, collected together. Final order cut off of August 31st, and in stores on September 23rd. Tyler, back to you.
- 55:53Tyler Johnson: Hey, Imaginary Fiends from Tim Sealy and Stephan Molnar.
- 55:59Tyler Johnson: When she was 10 years old, Melba Lee was sent to a mental institution for attempted murder, a crime she blamed on a spidery phantom called Polly Peach Pit.
- 56:09Tyler Johnson: Now, on her 18th birthday, Melba receives an unexpected offer from the FBI in exchange for a reprieve from her sentence. She will work with Special Agent Virgil Crockett to hunt down IMPs, interdimensional mental parasites that prey on the minds of humans.
- 56:28Tyler Johnson: Polly Peachbit is one of those IMPs, and Crockett needs Melba to convince her childhood tormentor to help with his mission and resist her manipulations to kill again.
- 56:39Tyler Johnson: Final order cutoff is August 24th and will be in shop September 30th. So this was a series, right?
- 56:48Tyler Johnson: Before…
- 56:49Tad Eggleston: A while ago, yeah.
- 56:51Tyler Johnson: Yeah, and so, not that they can't come out quite a while later, but this seems weird that this collection is so far behind the series.
- 56:59Tad Eggleston: I want to say that this might have actually been at a different publisher.
- 57:04Tyler Johnson: Oh.
- 57:06Tad Eggleston: If you can…
- 57:08Phil: to that.
- 57:08Tyler Johnson: I have the issues. It was really good.
- 57:13Tad Eggleston: Yes.
- 57:13Phil: Next up, there is the nameless 10th anniversary deluxe edition from Grant Morrison, Chris Burnham and Nathan Fairbairn over at Image Comics. An astronomer kills his family, then himself, leaving a cryptic warning.
- 57:28Phil: A veiled lady hunts her victims through human nightmares, and a cult hustler known only as Nameless is… oh, hold on, hold on a second, Tab, please don't cut that.
- 57:39Phil: named Nameless, is recruited by a consortium of billionaire futurists for a desperate mission, and the malevolent asteroid Zibala spins closer on a collision course with Earth. But nothing is what it seems. A terrifying inhuman experiment is about to begin. Abandon all hope and experience ultimate horror. It shocked me that this is 10 years since Nameless came out. This collection says it has 40 all new pages of content.
- 58:04Phil: Whether that is story material or back matter, I am not entirely sure, because I know that other Grant Morrison books, when they get collected, have extra story pages, so I might need to check out specifically this 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition compared to others.
- 58:19Phil: After that, there's Parliament of Rooks by Abigail Jill Harding and Richard Starkings over at Ablaze. Oh, by the way, that Nameless had a final order cut off of July 27th in stores December 9th. Parliament of Rooks from Ablaze by Abigail
- 58:35Phil: Jill Harding and Richard Stargains. After waking from a strange dream, architect Darius Ravenscar makes plans to head to the city of
- 58:45Phil: Eberwick to show the Princess the designs she has commissioned. However, at the Masquerade Ball, it becomes clear that something is terribly wrong. It's gonna have a final order cutoff of July 27th in stores, September 2nd.
- 59:00Tyler Johnson: All right.
- 59:02Tyler Johnson: Tab, Roots of Madness?
- 59:04Tad Eggleston: All right, Roots of Madness from Stephanie Phillips and Letic Katanichi.
- 59:09Tad Eggleston: Or Stephanie Williams. Stephanie Williams! Eisner-nominated writer, Stephanie Williams! The first black woman to be nominated for an Eisner Award, which is…
- 59:20Tad Eggleston: Wrong on so many levels and right on the level that Stephanie Williams is incredibly deserving.
- 59:28Tad Eggleston: And somehow got her nomination with books that are almost all creator-owned, and none…
- 59:35Tad Eggleston: Like, she's written, I think, two DC comics this year, and otherwise it's all for creator stuff, which is also super cool. When traditional remedies meet a new frontier of science, can long-kept family secrets help the world or doom us all?
- 59:54Tad Eggleston: 2.
- 59:55Tad Eggleston: Cosmic Oblivion
- 59:57Tad Eggleston: At the turn of the 20th century, a young black woman follows in the tradition of her late mother, creating special medicines using natural ingredients and secrets passed down from generation to generation. However, her mother's book of formulas is full of strange symbols and dark musings that she doesn't quite understand.
- 1:00:14Tad Eggleston: When the Meridian Fellowship reaches out and offers her the use of their facilities to do her research, Etta jumps at the chance.
- 1:00:21Tad Eggleston: What she finds is a secret society at a campus surrounded by natural wonders that may point the way to understanding the mysteries of her mother's work, if dark forces don't claim her first.
- 1:00:34Tad Eggleston: Inspired by the life of Madam C.J. Walker, this alternate history combines tradition with the supernatural for something truly modern and unique.

- 1:03:00Phil: Yes, I am. Devil's Due presents Hack/Mercy Sparks from Josh Blalock on Kickstarter through June 28th, 2024.
- 1:03:10Tad Eggleston: I think it's today, so…
- 1:03:12Phil: Oh!
- 1:03:13Tad Eggleston: That one might be done.
- 1:03:15Phil: Oh, no.
- 1:03:15Tad Eggleston: That one might be done by the time you listen to this.
- 1:03:18Phil: Yikes, sorry about that. 2026…

- 1:05:29Tad Eggleston: I've got most now, but still a lot.
- 1:05:33Phil: At least.
- 1:05:33Tad Eggleston: And a and a couple coming up.
- 1:05:36Phil: I'm sure, I would imagine that, you know, if you haven't talked to Shelly again for this new Kickstarter, then…
- 1:05:45Tad Eggleston: Tuesday.
- 1:05:46Phil: Tuesday. Very exciting. Awesome. Tyler, what do we got with Humble Bundles?
- 1:05:50Tyler Johnson: good I'm glad you asked because these are new ones we haven't talked about last time Sonic the Hedgehog 35th anniversary from IDW this looks like a great deal guys for 27 items you get eight or it's only $18 and that goes to the children's Miracle Network this is going to be running for about two more weeks July 10th it ends
- 1:06:13Tyler Johnson: And then the second one that we have up is Supergirl, Woman of Tomorrow, and more from DC.
- 1:06:20Tyler Johnson: For $18, you get 30 items, you guys, and this includes stuff from the New 52, Rebirth, some Lobo comics.
- 1:06:30Tyler Johnson: There is just a ton of stuff here. That goes to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation. That Kickstarter, excuse me, Humble Bundle lasts through July 18th.
- 1:06:46Tad Eggleston: You're right. Three amazing books in a week where there were so many fucking awesome books.
- 1:06:55Tad Eggleston: That I totally could have gone 9.
- 1:06:57Tad Eggleston: And I even read enough to go 9, but I'm not going 9. I'm gonna stick to Mind Management New and Improved number 1 for Matt Kent at ONI.
- 1:07:06Tad Eggleston: So, so good to have mind management back. Exploit number four from Laura Hudson, Tim Leong, and Amelia Pena at Mad Cave. They totally stuck the landing. And is Ted okay? Number five from Dave Chisholm at Mad Cave. The penultimate issue with a serious, serious.
- 1:07:26Tad Eggleston: Swerve, I cannot wait to see how this wraps up.
- 1:07:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah, lots of honorable mentions. 51 absolute Wonder Woman, American caper barbarians beyond bars.
- 1:07:39Tad Eggleston: Bizarro, Brownfield Action Family, Eye Collector was surprisingly good. Feral, The Hab, In Your Skin, Narco, the fifth issue of The Brutal… The Peril of the Brutal Dark, an Ezra Kane mystery from… from good friends Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips.
- 1:07:58Tad Eggleston: Powers, 25, number 10, pretty hate machine number 3 terabytes from from the podcast. Joe Saraki got to do a terabyte terabytes Usagi and White House robot romance. And finally.
- 1:08:14Tad Eggleston: our buddy Tom on Wonder Woman. Really good week in comics.
- 1:08:19Tad Eggleston: Phil, take a walk.
- 1:08:21Phil: Yeah, it's another week where my mind is feeling more gutter than panel, if you know what I mean.
- 1:08:29Phil: Thankfully, I have scheduled some time off from my horrendous day job coming up, so hopefully I'll get a nice, complete nervous breakdown in that time and be back to some semblance of normal. Ted, have you. Have you, read some.
- 1:08:43Tad Eggleston: More chapters.
- 1:08:44Phil: 5, 4.
- 1:08:44Tad Eggleston: More chapters of One Piece.
- 1:08:46Phil: Very exciting.
- 1:08:47Tad Eggleston: We've pretty much finished saving the children on the island and we're kind of regrouping and getting ready to move on, figuring out which of the alliances is real and which of the alliances was just for the sake of taking out the bad guys on the island. So, yeah.
- 1:09:07Phil: Interesting stuff. Fun stuff. I… I have switched up once again, and, got my hands on a book that I've been, excited to read for a long time now. It is… I've read the first 13 chapters of Goodnight Pun Pun by Minio Asano.
- 1:09:21Tad Eggleston: I love everything Ineosana does, but Pun Pun is amazing.
- 1:09:25Phil: Okay, yeah, I mean, I've known it by reputation only, and reading it, I have this, like, sense of, like, existential dread that is magnificent.
- 1:09:37Phil: But yeah, I had to get this one through interlibrary loan. So there might be some delays between volumes as I read through this masterpiece, but we'll probably plug the gaps with a handful of non-PunPun books that my library actually has.
- 1:09:51Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:09:52Phil: Yeah, yeah, that's, that's it. Let's, we got, we got a few minutes. The seeds.
- 1:09:59Phil: proceeds.
- 1:09:59Tad Eggleston: Picked out the seeds. What do you have to say, Phil?
- 1:10:03Phil: So, it's weird, this was… this was my first time reading it in full. I only read the first half, the first two issues, when they came out in single issues, and then bought the volume, but never finished reading it until this, so…
- 1:10:16Phil: It's a weird… it's a weird little book.
- 1:10:19Phil: And I think the title kind of gives away, like.
- 1:10:23Phil: It's a book where it feels like more is happening after you put it down than happened on the page.
- 1:10:31Phil: In that weird sort of way.
- 1:10:33Tad Eggleston: Thank you.
- 1:10:34Tyler Johnson: That's interesting.
- 1:10:36Tyler Johnson: Yeah, for… Yeah, I guess so. I'm trying to see what you're…
- 1:10:44Phil: So what I mean by that is that, so like this is a book that on the surface looks like it's about fake news and aliens and the fear of technology and a future that is trying to plunge itself back into the past.
- 1:11:00Phil: But, you know, arguably the most interesting thing about this book is a romance between an alien and a human and the implied child that they conceive. That is completely like.
- 1:11:13Phil: that is, you know, arguably the most interesting thing the book could do, but it's… it's never seen, and it's never expanded on… it's left completely implied by, both the art and the characters. Like, you don't… you don't actually know if…
- 1:11:30Phil: There is…
- 1:11:32Phil: A human alien hybrid baby. You know, it's kind of just the characters act like it could be real, but it's kind of up to the reader to decide whether it is real or not, as well as to, like, continue thinking about what that would do to the world if anyone ever found out about it. So, yeah, it's.
- 1:11:52Tyler Johnson: Well, that's why the aliens were there, right? To… they're not invading, they're just, like, there to collect genetic material before it's too late.
- 1:12:01Phil: Right. And then implicitly sell that on some sort of genetic material black market, you know? Yeah. And also.
- 1:12:10Tyler Johnson: In this world, right, the… It's…
- 1:12:14Tyler Johnson: it's a given that the world is dying, and it won't be long before they're gone, so I don't… particularly, I was like, yeah, that makes sense to gather as much of that up. Selling on the black market, yeah, it's a little shady, but I'm like.
- 1:12:28Phil: Right.
- 1:12:29Tyler Johnson: This world is dying. At least they're trying to keep something alive.
- 1:12:33Phil: Well, and that's the other thing that is…
- 1:12:36Phil: Kind of interesting is, you know, again, there's another plot thread that is pretty, you know.
- 1:12:45Phil: Pretty subtle is there's like a competition between, I think, two, like, scientist billionaires trying to save the world with robot bees or mycelium.
- 1:12:58Phil: You know, fungus of some sort, so it's…
- 1:13:02Phil: And again, those are actions that you only see discussed in a couple stray lines of dialogue, and then just visually referenced through
- 1:13:15Phil: you know, the recurring hexagon patterns on… for the company, you know? So it's…
- 1:13:24Tyler Johnson: I mean, because the seeds, right, they're a literal and a symbolic, right, representation of the aliens, like.
- 1:13:32Phil: Yes.
- 1:13:33Tyler Johnson: Embryo Bank, I guess?
- 1:13:35Phil: Well, and then when, you know, not to, you know, spoilers for the last panel, when they zoom in on Lola's tattoo, it's implied that
- 1:13:44Phil: She was there to collect alien DNA.
- 1:13:47Phil: She was doing to the aliens what they were doing to the planet Earth.
- 1:13:52Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 1:13:52Phil: You know, and again, for this being a book called The Seeds.
- 1:14:00Phil: A seed is… An inert object full of potential life.
- 1:14:06Phil: Correct. In the same way that this book is kind of an inert object full of potential stories that are left up to the reader to plant and fertilize, you know.
- 1:14:17Tyler Johnson: Yep, yep, yep.
- 1:14:18Phil: And that, that tension between, story and truth and, you know.
- 1:14:24Phil: belief and reality.
- 1:14:28Tyler Johnson: Yeah, it's really good. I mean, like, if you look at the artwork, right, and how they use the artwork to tell the story, where it's mostly black and white, but with this, like, sickly green, mossy… it really feels claustrophobic and uncomfortable as you're reading this, because, I mean, it's just to give this, like, impression of a dying world.
- 1:14:50Tyler Johnson: And that's what we're getting, right? I just felt like the whole time, like, this just feels yucky.
- 1:14:55Phil: Yeah, that's enough.
- 1:14:56Tyler Johnson: was the point, you know.
- 1:14:58Phil: And then the double entendre of green being, well, triple entendre of green being a color representing aliens and money and nature, you know, as well as the, you know.
- 1:15:12Phil: The the cover of the last book points out. So like this, this continuing motif of a hexagon.
- 1:15:21Phil: Is revealed to be… you could also see it as a cube.
- 1:15:26Phil: So that's another thing. It's about shifting perspectives of, you know, the hexagon is a 2D drawing of a 3D object.
- 1:15:34Tyler Johnson: Yeah. Okay.
- 1:15:35Phil: And how, you know, they talk about, oh, the truth has multiple sides. Every issue has six chapters, you know?
- 1:15:45Phil: But then there's… Go on, sorry.
- 1:15:47Tyler Johnson: Are you familiar with art terms like what Ben Day dots are?
- 1:15:53Phil: I'm not. I'm not familiar with Ben… Ben Daydot specifically. I know a few art.
- 1:15:58Tyler Johnson: Okay, so that's what they employed throughout this book with their shading, so it's like stippling, but for comic books, where, you know, DC was really big on it, you know, at some point.
- 1:16:10Tyler Johnson: It's like stippling, but for comic books. And they really use this really well throughout this story to get the texture of across, you know, it gives it like this very grainy, gritty, what's the word?
- 1:16:30Phil: Excellent.
- 1:16:30Tyler Johnson: You could almost fool it. Yeah.
- 1:16:33Phil: Well, and then it's… it's also, like… so the style is a…
- 1:16:37Phil: pretty… like, a lot of these drawings look like, traces of photographs. Like, it's a very photorealistic art style. But then, that technique, those… those dots, like you said, are used for texture, but they also…
- 1:16:51Phil: They kind of, they take the photorealism, and then…
- 1:16:57Phil: kind of deconstruct that just a little bit, because those dots are so unreal, to being used to texture, then it… it creates this, like, hyper-realistic image of, like, okay, I know that this is…
- 1:17:11Phil: meant to be, like, a very specific thing, but it's also becoming figurative through that use of art technique.
- 1:17:19Phil: You know, so it is. It is about that interplay between, like, real and imaginary.
- 1:17:24Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I mean, because even while some of the main characters are talking, you know, the artwork will be focusing on something insignificant.
- 1:17:33Phil: Yes.
- 1:17:34Tyler Johnson: Like, basically showing you what it would feel like from a fly-on-the-wall perspective.
- 1:17:40Tyler Johnson: You know, a flickering screen, or a dead bird, I think is one.
- 1:17:44Phil: You're right.
- 1:17:45Tyler Johnson: It's The scenery, the environment, is like a silent witness to everything that's going on.
- 1:17:51Phil: Absolutely, yeah. And the ways that, I absolutely love David Aha's art and how every page feels like a complete unit more than like the individual panels, you know?
- 1:18:05Phil: Like, it really feels like he has such a great mind for panel transitions and, you know, the page that starts out every issue that, you know, has like a warping hexagon pattern.
- 1:18:15Phil: Where it's like, we start on a hexagon, we zoom out a bit, and then we zoom back in, and the hexagon has changed in some way, or shifted. You know? That, that's another thing that I think is…
- 1:18:27Phil: A skill highly important in comics, but that you don't see often enough is that like whole page view where you know that he's designing it instead of panel by panel. He's really looking at, okay, you know, moments where like characters appear to be facing each other, facing away from each other between different panels. And again, and filling in those different spaces with seemingly unrelated objects that end up leaving.
- 1:18:52Phil: the eye and balancing the page, and really enhancing the story through, you know, abstract storytelling. It's really cool. I really like this book. I look forward to rereading it and, like, sitting with it longer and thinking about it more, just because of how
- 1:19:07Phil: Dense it is for a 4-issue miniseries.
- 1:19:10Tyler Johnson: Dense is a good word. Because what I, just last thoughts from me.
- 1:19:16Phil: Okay.
- 1:19:16Tyler Johnson: Ted, you haven't really jumped.
- 1:19:18Tad Eggleston: Oh, I've got a couple of questions that I'm going to bring up. And I just wanted to let you guys go through this because there are two things that I feel like you haven't hit on at all.
- 1:19:31Tyler Johnson: Okay, so one of the things that I really noticed is that none of this was really like focused on either one side, right? The tech people or the Luddites that don't want the tech.
- 1:19:45Tyler Johnson: It never focused on either one of them as being right or the good guys or.
- 1:19:53Phil: Mmhm.
- 1:19:53Tyler Johnson: You know what I mean?
- 1:19:55Phil: Yep.
- 1:19:55Tyler Johnson: It really… I mean, it did show that they were tech addicts, and they were hollow and dying, but…
- 1:20:02Tyler Johnson: It also the the Luddite rebels, you know. They're paranoid, you know.
- 1:20:08Tyler Johnson: and it did… to me, it didn't really focus on, like, these are the good guys, these are the bad, right? It just… these are just two factions that have to live together, and we got this,
- 1:20:20Tyler Johnson: Alien aspect, taking genetic material.
- 1:20:25Phil: Good.
- 1:20:26Tyler Johnson: And I just thought that was kind of cool.
- 1:20:29Tyler Johnson: Alright.
- 1:20:31Tad Eggleston: So… First, I want to ask a question.
- 1:20:37Tad Eggleston: Regarding… I mean, you've talked about the the literal seeds and the the alien and and.
- 1:20:47Tad Eggleston: whatnot,
- 1:20:53Tad Eggleston: But what about the the.
- 1:20:57Tad Eggleston: informational seeds. You know, she's working for an editor that literally has the position of, like, make up the story and it will become true.
- 1:21:09Tyler Johnson: Mmhm.
- 1:21:13Tyler Johnson: Boy, does that seem, like, relevant to today? I mean, holy crap.
- 1:21:16Tad Eggleston: I mean, though.
- 1:21:18Phil: Well.
- 1:21:18Tad Eggleston: If you read the afterwards, they specifically said that like.
- 1:21:22Phil: Yes.
- 1:21:23Tad Eggleston: Well, well, parts of it became even more real as they were writing it. It was, it was not, not written to be,
- 1:21:32Tyler Johnson: commentary on modern day.
- 1:21:34Phil: Right.
- 1:21:34Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:21:35Tyler Johnson: News…
- 1:21:35Tad Eggleston: Kobe?
- 1:21:37Tad Eggleston: Exactly.
- 1:21:38Phil: Yeah. Okay.
- 1:21:39Tad Eggleston: Uhhh… But, I, I do think that there, there's, there's,
- 1:21:49Tad Eggleston: a lot of… A lot to be said about, like, the, the, the…
- 1:21:57Tad Eggleston: I mean, it actually reminds me as much about… of Mark Twain and Eli can…
- 1:22:04Phil: Mmhm.
- 1:22:05Tad Eggleston: Travel around the world while the truth is, you know.
- 1:22:08Phil: Yeah. Put it on cheese.
- 1:22:10Tad Eggleston: Shoes, right? Because like the entire, the entire purpose here is.
- 1:22:17Tad Eggleston: Like, let's get the headline, let's…
- 1:22:21Phil: Mmhm.
- 1:22:22Tad Eggleston: Get our clicks, sell our papers, whatever.
- 1:22:26Phil: Right, so I think…
- 1:22:27Tad Eggleston: And we'll make it real.
- 1:22:29Phil: One of the things about that that I thought the whole time reading this is I wonder if the Luddite movement and dead zones.
- 1:22:38Phil: was…
- 1:22:40Phil: Like one of those where the headline was created and the story was written and then people started doing it because they started reading about it.
- 1:22:48Tad Eggleston: Well, I have a similar question.
- 1:22:52Tad Eggleston: You guys are working from the assumption that there are real aliens involved here.
- 1:22:57Phil: -H.
- 1:22:59Tad Eggleston: And you mentioned her tattoo.
- 1:23:02Phil: -H.
- 1:23:03Tad Eggleston: But you didn't mention his tattoo.
- 1:23:05Phil: His tattoo.
- 1:23:07Tyler Johnson: Mmhm.
- 1:23:09Phil: Where's… what's it say?
- 1:23:11Tad Eggleston: Very same page.
- 1:23:14Phil: And,
- 1:23:15Tyler Johnson: I don't have it in front of me.
- 1:23:17Phil: I got it right here. Oh, so that was his arm. Okay.
- 1:23:22Phil: So he was working. Oh, interesting. Okay, so I misread that a bit.
- 1:23:28Tyler Johnson: What, what, okay, what does it.
- 1:23:30Phil: So he has the tattoo that is the hexagons and the barcode that is referencing to the, the genetic,
- 1:23:40Phil: the…
- 1:23:41Phil: the, or the biotech industry that was, creating the robot bees. The two guys that were, that were competing between the mycelium and the robot bees, implying that, like.
- 1:23:52Phil: The alien…
- 1:23:53Tad Eggleston: One of them was a woman.
- 1:23:55Phil: Yes, the aliens that are collecting data from the dying world are billionaires.
- 1:24:01Tad Eggleston: Or the servants of God. Yeah, at the very least, they're not aliens at all. They're, like, this goes back to her picture of the guy taking off the mask, you know, so the question now becomes, are
- 1:24:14Tad Eggleston: Are there any aliens at all?
- 1:24:17Phil: From there…
- 1:24:18Phil: I think I think that that how unrecognizable humanity is to itself in the world today and how different a billionaire's life is from a journalist's life, from a sex worker's life, and how, you know, any two people can be aliens to each other.
- 1:24:36Phil: In that way.
- 1:24:37Tad Eggleston: Absolutely. Thank you so much.
- 1:24:38Phil: Point that out, Kat. I definitely sped around a little bit too.
- 1:24:41Tad Eggleston: But yeah, no, I hadn't caught that on any of my previous reads, and when I hit that, it was like, oh, wait a minute.
- 1:24:49Phil: Mmhm.
- 1:24:50Tad Eggleston: Like.
- 1:24:52Phil: That is… that is really fast.
- 1:24:53Tad Eggleston: Because watching the guy in the club pull up his mask, you know, on one side, it…
- 1:25:02Tad Eggleston: It puts question to… Umm.
- 1:25:06Tad Eggleston: the aliens, but also because of where they are and what's going on, it's like, oh, wait a minute. Is she actually taking a picture of the alien that they went to go get, or is she taking the picture to be able to give her boss to say the aliens aren't real?
- 1:25:22Phil: And that's what she did, and in doing that, unintentionally told the truth.
- 1:25:27Phil: That, hey, maybe these aren't actual outer spaces.
- 1:25:30Tad Eggleston: Well or or or or.
- 1:25:33Tad Eggleston: or intentionally told the truth. I mean, like, it's really hard to figure out what Astra…
- 1:25:39Phil: Mmhm.
- 1:25:40Tad Eggleston: Believes, and that's 1 of the things that I think is super cool about her.
- 1:25:44Phil: Oh yeah.
- 1:25:45Tad Eggleston: you know, she certainly would prefer to report the real stories, so is she actually reporting a real story that she's selling as sensational?
- 1:25:57Phil: That, that's, that's another great point.
- 1:26:01Tad Eggleston: You know.
- 1:26:01Phil: Yeah?
- 1:26:02Tad Eggleston: There's just layers upon layers. You can tell why Karen Berger jumped all over this version. Yeah.
- 1:26:12Tad Eggleston: Because apparently, it, it, the, the…
- 1:26:16Tyler Johnson: Okay, let me ask you this.
- 1:26:17Tad Eggleston: It stemmed from a a book they called Scoop that that was.
- 1:26:22Tad Eggleston: That was more grounded in 50s.
- 1:26:26Phil: Oh, interesting.
- 1:26:28Tad Eggleston: Just journalism.
- 1:26:30Tyler Johnson: Hey, do you think Astra is a hero or more of a failed journalist? Because, I mean, she decides to protect a massive secret instead of publishing it.
- 1:26:40Phil: Well.
- 1:26:41Phil: And…
- 1:26:42Tad Eggleston: The sheep.
- 1:26:42Phil: Sure.
- 1:26:43Phil: Yeah, I mean…
- 1:26:44Tad Eggleston: Does she publish the secret?
- 1:26:47Phil: She publishes the secret beneath the secret.
- 1:26:49Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:26:50Tyler Johnson: Yes!
- 1:26:51Phil: as a fake story that was, you know, reversing her previous story. It's… it's a… it's complicated. It's very complicated. I… I think this is… this is a book that…
- 1:27:04Phil: Doesn't really care about good and bad.
- 1:27:07Phil: it, I don't think.
- 1:27:08Tyler Johnson: That's not the.
- 1:27:09Phil: Yeah, I don't… I don'.
- 1:27:11Tad Eggleston: Also, I don't think it cares about,
- 1:27:19Tad Eggleston: Cares about truth more than facts.
- 1:27:23Tad Eggleston: The, the, the truths are.
- 1:27:27Tad Eggleston: we're prone to… Sensationalism.
- 1:27:31Phil: Mmhm.
- 1:27:32Tad Eggleston: The truth is, we're destroying our planet.
- 1:27:36Phil: Yep.
- 1:27:37Tad Eggleston: The truth is… It's really hard for the little guy.
- 1:27:44Tad Eggleston: to get by.
- 1:27:46Phil: Yeah, so.
- 1:27:47Tad Eggleston: The the truth is that.
- 1:27:50Tad Eggleston: Billionaires are, are so disconnected from.
- 1:27:56Phil: Well.
- 1:27:57Tad Eggleston: That that even saving the world is a game to them that they bet on and and like.
- 1:28:05Phil: Not just that, but with the, the trend in billionaires being doomsday preppers and having bunkers, those investments are worth nothing to a world that
- 1:28:16Phil: avoids apocalypse.
- 1:28:18Phil: So it's in that same way. They're like, oh, these seeds aren't worth anything unless the world is dying.
- 1:28:25Phil: And in that same way, that's like…
- 1:28:28Phil: all the, like, the billionaire who shot himself into space in this story, you know? And it's been news for at least a decade that billionaires have been obsessed with the end of the world. And so now that they've invested in it and have their bunkers, and are trying to quote-unquote solve that problem.
- 1:28:47Phil: That's going to be a huge waste of time if the world doesn't end.
- 1:28:51Tyler Johnson: Right.
- 1:28:53Tyler Johnson: What side of the wall… hey, what side of the wall would you guys choose for yourselves?
- 1:28:57Phil: I mean… I…
- 1:29:01Tyler Johnson: I know, I'd probably be on the tech side, honestly. I mean…
- 1:29:04Phil: It, I think it, that's, that's hard to.
- 1:29:07Tyler Johnson: I mean, there's no good answer for that.
- 1:29:10Phil: Yeah.
- 1:29:11Tyler Johnson: I mean, the tech side is a nightmare over there, right? And then in the other side, right, it's just the Stone Age, pretty much.
- 1:29:20Phil: Kind of, but at the same time, like, it's… that's the thing, is that, like.
- 1:29:25Phil: And I know that there were a couple depictions of Luddites, but I think, like, Most of…
- 1:29:34Phil: Like, that's the thing, is that I… Yeah Those…
- 1:29:37Phil: Those people, those characters weren't very much the focus of the book.
- 1:29:43Phil: No, like, that's the thing, is that the major happenings going on in that dead zone were the aliens collecting seeds. So.
- 1:29:52Tad Eggleston: Well, and I also think that a ton of which side you're on, like, comes down to…
- 1:29:58Tad Eggleston: I mean, I get the… since we don't actually… like, the people we see on the other side are never the people talked about as being on the other side. Yeah. So, like, I think that there's a certain level where…
- 1:30:15Tad Eggleston: Being on the other side might just mean having run away and or committed suicide.
- 1:30:22Tad Eggleston: Like, like to actually be a Luddite.
- 1:30:28Tad Eggleston: And survive requires a certain, like, the decision is probably based way more on, on what your skills and resources are.
- 1:30:39Tad Eggleston: Then, strictly…
- 1:30:42Tyler Johnson: Choice.
- 1:30:42Tad Eggleston: Wow.
- 1:30:43Phil: Yeah.
- 1:30:44Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:30:44Phil: I think so. I think that's a good.
- 1:30:46Tyler Johnson: Yeah, you're right.
- 1:30:49Phil: What was the other, piece that we hadn't touched on, aside from the,
- 1:30:54Tad Eggleston: No, the first piece was talking about the press and the idea seeds. Oh, okay. And the second piece was the talent.
- 1:31:02Phil: Gotcha, gotcha, gotcha. Okay.
- 1:31:05Tad Eggleston: Down.
- 1:31:05Phil: Just wanted to make sure we got your points out.
- 1:31:07Tad Eggleston: Yep, those are my big ones to add.
- 1:31:11Tyler Johnson: You think.
- 1:31:11Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I like.
- 1:31:12Tyler Johnson: Alien.
- 1:31:12Tad Eggleston: It's.
- 1:31:13Tyler Johnson: What do you think the aliens actually think of us, right? Because they aren't here to conquer or destroy us.
- 1:31:20Tad Eggleston: Again, I'm not certain that they'.
- 1:31:22Phil: So.
- 1:31:22Tad Eggleston: are aliens.
- 1:31:24Phil: Yeah, that. So, okay, so like, so two things. One, in our world, I am of the position that mathematically aliens are out there, but I won't be convinced.
- 1:31:36Tad Eggleston: Are they out there?
- 1:31:39Tad Eggleston: Now.
- 1:31:42Tad Eggleston: Mathematically, there's almost certainly life… there's almost certainly… B.
- 1:31:50Tyler Johnson: You know.
- 1:31:50Tad Eggleston: Or will be, like…
- 1:31:52Tyler Johnson: More or less.
- 1:31:53Tad Eggleston: universe other than us.
- 1:31:55Phil: Sure.
- 1:31:55Tad Eggleston: But since since you've got that dimension of time as well. Mhmm.
- 1:32:00Phil: Right, right.
- 1:32:01Tad Eggleston: Stay alive now.
- 1:32:03Phil: Yes, and that's… and that's… that's the… that… and even if they're alive now
- 1:32:07Phil: Where is the contact? I am going to be distrustful of any narrative of extraterrestrial contact that comes from a government and is not self-verifiable.
- 1:32:20Tyler Johnson: Correct. Right. The contact part. But like just based as far as the question of are they alive now? Sure. There are tens of billions of stars out there with the correct planet placement to allow life to form.
- 1:32:39Phil: Oh.
- 1:32:39Tyler Johnson: But as far as like distance, if we want to talk that and time, they'll dive.
- 1:32:45Phil: Okay.
- 1:32:45Tyler Johnson: They get here unless they've got some kind of
- 1:32:48Tyler Johnson: propulsion system that gets them here way faster. Oh, yeah.
- 1:32:52Phil: Oh yeah, so I think, and even in the context of this story, I mean, like.
- 1:33:01Phil: My my here's the thing. If if the aliens are actually aliens, then.
- 1:33:08Phil: They're they're terrible. They're just like us. They're they're the the ones that are on this planet are clearly just just criminals, you know, very understandable.
- 1:33:18Phil: However, if the aliens are not extraterrestrials and they're actually just like genetically modified people from that megacorp that are on some kind of secret mission, that is a lot more fascinating to me and opens up a lot more potential of like what kind of people they could actually be.
- 1:33:36Tyler Johnson: Correct.
- 1:33:37Phil: You know,
- 1:33:39Phil: Because, like… I'm gonna…
- 1:33:42Tad Eggleston: I mean, they're also terrible people.
- 1:33:44Phil: I'm gonna, yeah, I'm gonna.
- 1:33:46Tyler Johnson: I'm gonna reread it with that perspective in mind, because I wasn't reading it that way, you know?
- 1:33:50Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 1:33:51Tad Eggleston: Well, and, and like, I, like, I, I always find myself going back and forth as I read it.
- 1:33:59Phil: Mmhm.
- 1:34:01Tad Eggleston: And and what I think.
- 1:34:03Tad Eggleston: Yeah. That's a great book, though.
- 1:34:08Tyler Johnson: So.
- 1:34:08Tad Eggleston: So, like…
- 1:34:11Tyler Johnson: Phil, this is a good gift for sure.
- 1:34:13Phil: Thank you.
- 1:34:15Phil: it's meaty. But, but yeah, I mean, and that's, that's.
- 1:34:21Phil: This is one of the only Dark Horse Karen Berger books I've read.
- 1:34:25Phil: Oh, wait, no, I've read she could fly. Okay, so that's.
- 1:34:29Tad Eggleston: Well, which is just like.
- 1:34:33Tad Eggleston: Crazy… weird to me, because, like…
- 1:34:46Tad Eggleston: I would think that that the burger line would have been one that you would have.
- 1:34:53Tyler Johnson: Follow.
- 1:34:53Tad Eggleston: And so…
- 1:34:54Phil: That's the thing.
- 1:34:55Phil: this… this… the start of it, it would have been. But also, when the start of this was coming out, that was the point where my comics collecting started to condense and protract.
- 1:35:06Phil: Where I had to start cutting, yeah, so I had to start cutting a bunch of books. This… there were only a couple that I kept up on, you know, and I was having to go down from reading, like, you know, 10 books a week to 10 books a month.
- 1:35:20Tad Eggleston: Gotcha.
- 1:35:21Phil: Yes.
- 1:35:22Phil: So there's a lot to for me to go back to and discover, that's for sure.
- 1:35:27Tad Eggleston: Right, right.
- 1:35:29Tad Eggleston: Gotcha, gotcha.
- 1:35:31Phil: Thank you.
- 1:35:33Tad Eggleston: That makes more sense.
- 1:35:35Tyler Johnson: Well, guys, that was, a good, a good, run through kind of better than a lot of the books we've, we've read. We're like, Phil, you and I are really like, nope, this is what I think.
- 1:35:45Phil: And then Tad comes in with the absolute curveball at the end there. I'm like, oh sh.
- 1:35:49Tyler Johnson: Okay, that's.
- 1:35:50Phil: Really great observation there, yeah.
- 1:35:51Tyler Johnson: True, fine.
- 1:35:53Phil: Yeah, okay.
- 1:35:55Tyler Johnson: But it was a good time. What do you guys want to read for next week? Or should we talk about that off the air?
- 1:36:02Tad Eggleston: Yeah, why don't we talk about that off the air this time? Let's, let's, let's wrap up.
- 1:36:07Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 1:36:08Tad Eggleston: Umm.
- 1:36:10Tyler Johnson: All right.
- 1:36:11Tad Eggleston: Talks, talks, some spec.
- 1:36:13Tad Eggleston: Spectacular books.
- 1:36:15Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 1:36:15Tad Eggleston: books we hope will be well actually no we're going to start with some spectacular books because because there are three
- 1:36:22Tad Eggleston: Absolutely spectacular books coming out next week.
- 1:36:27Tad Eggleston: The Beast Borken No. 1 from Julio Anta and Daniel Irizarry is just…
- 1:36:35Tad Eggleston: It's, it's, cryptid mixed with, with real life hurricane.
- 1:36:43Tad Eggleston: stuff in Puerto Rico,
- 1:36:48Tad Eggleston: The first issue doesn't have the Donald throwing paper towels, but you can feel it either coming or in the background.
