- Lucas: There's this narrative in tech that if you want to build a software product, you either need to learn to code or find a technical co-founder. But a growing number of solopreneurs are proving that wrong using no-code tools. Luna: Yeah, I've seen a lot of buzz around no-code, but I'm curious about a real, profitable example. Who's actually making money with this? Lucas: So I came across a founder — let's call him Mark — who runs a solo business called Portly. It's a client portal for freelancers. Think of it as a branded dashboard where clients can log in, view project files, send messages, and approve invoices. Mark built the entire thing on Bubble, a no-code platform, and tied it together with Zapier for email notifications and Slack integrations. Luna: And he didn't write a single line of code? Lucas: Not one line. He had no programming background — he was a freelance graphic designer who got tired of managing client communication through email chains and Dropbox links. So he spent about three months learning Bubble through online tutorials and built the first version himself. Luna: Three months of learning — that's not nothing. But compared to learning full-stack development, it's a much lower barrier. Lucas: Exactly. And the key insight was that he already understood the problem intimately because he was the target customer. He knew exactly what features mattered most — like file versioning, client approval workflows, and automatic payment reminders. He didn't need to build anything complex on the backend. Luna: So how does the business work now? What's the revenue look like? Lucas: Portly launched in late 2024. As of July 2026, it's generating about $15,000 a month in recurring revenue from roughly 300 paying customers. The pricing is simple: $29 per month for individuals, $79 for teams — but most of his customers are on the individual plan. He charges annually for a slight discount. Luna: Fifteen thousand a month as a solo founder is impressive. What's his biggest cost? Lucas: Bubble hosting. His plan costs about $200 a month. Then there's Zapier, around $50. So his monthly overhead is maybe $300. That's a 98% margin before taxes. He's essentially running a software business with coffee shop level expenses. Luna: That's the dream for a lot of solopreneurs. But I'd imagine the challenges are different when you're not writing code. What happens when something breaks? Lucas: That's one of the biggest trade-offs. Mark told me that debugging on Bubble can be frustrating because you're working within the platform's constraints. If Bubble has a bug, you're stuck waiting for their team to fix it. Also, performance is sometimes slower than a custom-coded app, especially under load. Luna: Has he ever thought about switching to traditional development? Or hiring a developer? Lucas: He did consider it. But he ran the numbers: hiring a freelance developer to rebuild the app in React and Node would cost at least $30,000, maybe more. And then ongoing maintenance would be another cost. He decided that for his current scale, no-code is good enough. His customers aren't complaining about load times — they care about the features. Luna: Makes sense. So what about the marketing side? How did he find those first 300 customers? Lucas: This is where the story gets interesting. His first six months were slow. He had maybe 20 customers. Then he made a classic mistake: he priced too low at $9 a month, trying to compete with tools like HoneyBook. He realized that low price attracted bargain hunters who churned quickly. So he raised the price to $29, and something counterintuitive happened. Luna: Churn went down? Lucas: Exactly. He started attracting more serious freelancers who saw the tool as an investment. He also changed his acquisition strategy. Instead of cold outreach, he started writing detailed blog posts about client management for freelancers, and those posts ranked well on Google. Organic search now drives about 60% of his signups. Luna: So content marketing was the real growth lever. That's very solopreneur-friendly — no ad budget required. Lucas: Right. He also built a small community on a private Slack group where early users could give feedback. That community became his de facto product team. He'd poll them on features, and then build the most requested ones in Bubble over a weekend. Luna: That's smart. It also creates a lot of stickiness — customers feel invested in the product's direction. Lucas: Exactly. And that's a lesson that applies beyond no-code: if you're a solo founder, your users can be your best source of ideas and retention. Mark doesn't have a customer support team — he answers every email himself, usually within an hour. And because he's a former freelancer, he speaks the same language as his customers. Luna: That personal touch is hard to scale, but at his size it's a competitive advantage. How much time does he spend on support? Lucas: He says about two hours a day. The rest of his time is split between building features and creating content. He's been able to keep his work week around 40 hours, which is sustainable for a solopreneur. Luna: That's a good balance. I'm curious — what's the ceiling for a no-code product like this? Can it ever become a million-dollar business? Lucas: That's the big question. Some no-code platforms have scaled surprisingly well. For example, there's a company called Makerpad that was built on no-code and eventually acquired. But for most, there's a natural ceiling. Mark's goal is to reach $30,000 MRR, which would require about 1,000 customers. At that point, he might need to hire help or consider a custom rebuild. Luna: But for now, he's running a profitable, low-overhead business that lets him work on his own terms. That's a pretty solid outcome. Lucas: Absolutely. And I think the takeaway for solopreneurs is: if you have deep domain expertise in a specific problem, no-code might be all you need to validate and even scale a product. You don't need to be a programmer. You need to understand your customer better than anyone else. Luna: And you need to be willing to learn a new tool for a few months. But that's a much smaller investment than learning to code. Lucas: Right. And speaking of investments — if these conversations have moved your work forward in some small way, we'd love for you to consider supporting the show. We deliberately don't run ads on these episodes. If you want to support that choice, the link is buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: It's a small gesture that helps us keep the content ad-free and focused on what matters — real stories, real numbers, real strategies. Lucas: So back to Mark's story. One thing I didn't mention is that he almost gave up in month four. He had only 12 customers and was considering shutting it down. But he had a conversation with one customer who told him the tool had saved them from losing a big client. That motivated him to keep going. Luna: That's a powerful reminder that even with all the metrics, sometimes one piece of feedback can change the trajectory. Lucas: Exactly. And now, two years later, he's at $15,000 MRR, no code, no investors, no co-founder. Just a clear problem and a willingness to learn a new tool. Luna: It makes you wonder how many other solopreneurs are sitting on an idea that could work with a no-code approach. Lucas: That's the thought I'd leave listeners with. If you have a software idea and you know the customer pain point, don't let the lack of coding skills stop you. There's never been a better time to build something on your own.
