Latest / THE WORLD'S BEST PREACHER / The Love Letter Part 1 - The Potter’s House of Dallas

- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, I know I sound a little old school, but
- 0:05Speaker 1: I came up at a time that people sang.
- 0:07Speaker 2: About love, even in the world. And I have to explain.
- 0:13Speaker 1: This to the other people because you came up at
- 0:15Speaker 1: a time that they just sing about sex. But let's
- 0:20Speaker 1: not get sex and love confused. Or you're going to
- 0:27Speaker 1: lead a very empty and frustrating life trying to scratch
- 0:32Speaker 1: a love itch with a sex utensil. That old sex
- 0:44Speaker 1: utensil is too short to reach that love itch.
- 0:52Speaker 3: This is the part of time Now we're into this
- 0:58Speaker 3: love thing we've been talking about, and it really started
- 1:01Speaker 3: transforming our church, and I pray that it will bless
- 1:03Speaker 3: you in a special way.
- 1:04Speaker 1: This series is called The Love Letter, and this is
- 1:07Speaker 1: the title message. You will want to follow this one
- 1:10Speaker 1: really closely as we share the title message, The Love Letter.
- 1:17Speaker 1: When I told you to read Philemon, you kind of gasped.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Philemon is not discussed much, not preached, not taught on,
- 1:34Speaker 1: not talked about. It is one of the unique Pauline epistles,
- 1:39Speaker 1: the shortest one in the New Testament. People have overlooked
- 1:44Speaker 1: it for years thinking that it had no value because
- 1:48Speaker 1: unlike Ephesians or Hebrews or Romans written to bodies of believers,
- 1:54Speaker 1: Philemon is a personal letter pinned by an old man
- 1:58Speaker 1: in a cold, dank cell, perhaps in Rome, scribbling on paper,
- 2:05Speaker 1: on papyrus, to send a note to his son in
- 2:09Speaker 1: the faith, Philemon, to receive a character named Onesimus.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Now, Philemon is.
- 2:19Speaker 1: A son to Paul, much like Timothy was, but Timothy
- 2:23Speaker 1: gets the spotlight. Philemon doesn't get a lot of light,
- 2:28Speaker 1: Philemon was a son of Paul, said we don't hear
- 2:31Speaker 1: a whole lot about, but Paul thought enough in his
- 2:34Speaker 1: old age to write to Philemon. But he doesn't write
- 2:38Speaker 1: to Philemon about Philemon. He writes to Philemon.
- 2:41Speaker 2: About another son, a new son.
- 2:43Speaker 1: That has been begotten in his old age. The new
- 2:48Speaker 1: son's name is Onesimus. The irony is, is that Philemon
- 2:55Speaker 1: is a slave owner. And Onesimus is a runaway slave.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Now we kind of know why we haven't heard a
- 3:08Speaker 1: lot about it. Philemon is a slave owner and Onesimus
- 3:14Speaker 1: is a runaway slave. Now, if you look at it
- 3:16Speaker 1: with your Western mind and your American history, you're going
- 3:20Speaker 1: to miss the greater point. Philemon is a slave owner
- 3:24Speaker 1: because it shows in their culture a symbol of wealth.
- 3:31Speaker 1: When you were wealthy, when you were accomplished, you could
- 3:33Speaker 1: afford to have servants and slaves that served you. Philemon
- 3:40Speaker 1: is not a lower class man. He's an upper class
- 3:44Speaker 1: individual that has come to Christ by faith and accepted
- 3:48Speaker 1: him and believed on him through the ministry of Paul.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Paul had the kind of ministry that reached high and low.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Isn't it amazing that Paul's arms were long enough to
- 4:01Speaker 1: reach a Philemon who was wealthy and Onesimus who is
- 4:06Speaker 1: a runaway slave? Real good ministry, real good ministry can
- 4:16Speaker 1: reach just.
- 4:17Speaker 2: As far high as it can low.
- 4:21Speaker 1: And maintain the same integrity going one way as it
- 4:25Speaker 1: can the other. Real good ministry is not relegated to
- 4:31Speaker 1: the hood. Real good ministry will work just as well
- 4:35Speaker 1: in Beverly Hills as it will in Watts. Real good ministry.
- 4:42Speaker 1: We'll preach just as effectively on Preston Road as it
- 4:46Speaker 1: will over in South Dallas. Real good ministry reaches all
- 4:52Speaker 1: types of people from all walks of life with the
- 4:55Speaker 1: same integrity. Real good ministry will do that. Philemon has
- 5:01Speaker 1: no real doctrinal value. It does not set up the
- 5:04Speaker 1: order of the church. It doesn't deal with deacons or elders.
- 5:06Speaker 1: It doesn't deal with immoralities and things like that. It
- 5:10Speaker 1: doesn't deal with things that have been profitable to preach.
- 5:13Speaker 1: It's just a simple, quick letter written by the shaky hand,
- 5:18Speaker 1: the trembling hand of an old man who resists arthritis
- 5:23Speaker 1: long enough to pen a few words because he thought
- 5:26Speaker 1: it was important. To stand in a position and officiate
- 5:32Speaker 1: for this runaway slave. The Bible is unclear as to
- 5:39Speaker 1: how a guy like Onesimus would run into Paul, saying
- 5:43Speaker 1: that Paul.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Is a prisoner.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Now look, I want to set this up for a minute.
- 5:47Speaker 1: You got a prisoner who is incarcerated outwardly, but free inwardly.
- 5:58Speaker 1: writing to a slave owner, trying to get the slave
- 6:04Speaker 1: owner to receive a runaway slave. Each man is in
- 6:12Speaker 1: some way incarcerated, and each man is in some way liberated.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Paul is bound on the outside, but he's free on
- 6:25Speaker 1: the inside. And he's writing to Philemon to say, Onesimus
- 6:31Speaker 1: by all rights is your slave. You paid the price
- 6:35Speaker 1: for him. He didn't treat you good. He didn't serve
- 6:38Speaker 1: out his time. He ran away. But I want you
- 6:42Speaker 1: to receive him back because he ran away from you
- 6:46Speaker 1: but ran into me. And in the process of him
- 6:51Speaker 1: running into me, I converted him.
- 6:54Speaker 2: And Onesimus, who was your slave, is now my son.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Now Philemon, this puts you in a dilemma because if
- 7:08Speaker 1: Onesimus is my son, then he is your brother. And
- 7:14Speaker 1: if he is your brother, he can't be your slave.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Hallelujah.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Touch somebody and say, Onesimus is a runaway slave. Yeah,
- 7:31Speaker 1: you know what it is to be a runaway slave.
- 7:34Speaker 1: You're running away from something and.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Can't deal with it anymore.
- 7:39Speaker 1: And you might not admit it, but all of us
- 7:42Speaker 1: in here have.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Been a runaway. Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Don't get ethnic on me. You don't have to be
- 7:51Speaker 1: black to be a runaway slave. Anytime you're running away
- 7:56Speaker 1: from how you have been defined, anytime you're running away
- 8:00Speaker 1: from how folks saw you, anytime you're running away from
- 8:04Speaker 1: the limited perspective people had on your life, anytime you
- 8:07Speaker 1: refuse to be bound and you got to get away
- 8:10Speaker 1: from a trap, you've been a runaway slave, been on
- 8:13Speaker 1: the run. Some of y'all running right now. Running from
- 8:18Speaker 1: the limited way people view you. Running from your past.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Running from your background. Running from who you used to be.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Running from what people think about you. Some of you
- 8:27Speaker 1: are on the run right now. Onesimus was a runaway slave.
- 8:33Speaker 1: He ran up on Paul and got liberated. Now he
- 8:38Speaker 1: is liberated on the inside. But he's still on the
- 8:43Speaker 1: run on the outside. And if you're a runaway slave,
- 8:48Speaker 1: you lived in danger of being destroyed. Paul, who can't
- 8:54Speaker 1: get out of prison, is writing a letter so that
- 9:00Speaker 1: somebody who is out can be free. I'm going to
- 9:06Speaker 1: work on this till you get it. And he writes
- 9:09Speaker 1: to Philemon and he writes a letter and he says
- 9:12Speaker 1: to him, he says, Philemon, I believe you. that Onesimus
- 9:17Speaker 1: is more profitable to you now than he was before.
- 9:24Speaker 1: And if you have the grace to forgive him and
- 9:29Speaker 1: receive him back as your brother, he says, then everything
- 9:37Speaker 1: is going to be all right. And he says, I
- 9:39Speaker 1: know he didn't treat you right. I know you didn't
- 9:42Speaker 1: get your value out and the transaction hadn't been ratified.
- 9:47Speaker 1: And I know he might have done something to you.
- 9:50Speaker 1: The Bible doesn't say what he did, but he might have.
- 9:52Speaker 1: You know, when you run, you generally take something on
- 9:54Speaker 1: your way out. And there's no.
- 10:00Speaker 2: violation.
- 10:00Speaker 1: You haven't been violated until somebody steal from you. That's
- 10:05Speaker 1: a feeling. I tell you, it's a feeling all by itself.
- 10:09Speaker 1: When somebody steals from you and he says, but Paul says,
- 10:13Speaker 1: now I know you might not want to forgive him
- 10:16Speaker 1: because he's done some injustices to you. He said, but
- 10:20Speaker 1: just take him back and if he owes you anything,
- 10:25Speaker 1: put it on my account. If you want to hold
- 10:29Speaker 1: on to the debt, you can hold on to it.
- 10:32Speaker 1: He said, but just move it from his column.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Over the mind.
- 10:40Speaker 1: And he says, you know I'm good for it. I'll
- 10:45Speaker 1: pay you when I return. Oh, you're waking up with
- 10:50Speaker 1: me now. You're about to catch on to me now.
- 10:52Speaker 1: He says, I'll pay you when I get back. He said,
- 10:56Speaker 1: but by the way, he said, you know.
- 10:58Speaker 2: You owe me everything.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Amen.
- 11:04Speaker 1: He said, I'm writing you this little love letter because
- 11:07Speaker 1: I'm about to send Onesimus to you and I want
- 11:10Speaker 1: to test you to see if you're big enough to
- 11:15Speaker 1: receive somebody you've been angry with. Because I'm suggesting to
- 11:22Speaker 1: you that you're going to need him. And the only
- 11:26Speaker 1: way you can receive him is if you're big enough
- 11:30Speaker 1: to get over what you were mad about so that
- 11:33Speaker 1: he can bring you into how God wants to use
- 11:36Speaker 1: him in your life. So I'm writing you this love letter.
- 11:43Speaker 1: This problem between Philemon and Onesimus is a test.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a test.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Sometimes God will test you with people. When you're asking
- 11:56Speaker 1: him for mercy and asking him for second chances and
- 12:00Speaker 1: asking him for grace, sometimes God will test you with
- 12:04Speaker 1: somebody who's asking you for mercy and asking you for
- 12:07Speaker 1: grace just to see if you're big enough to sow
- 12:11Speaker 1: something so you can reap something. Oh, y'all don't hear
- 12:15Speaker 1: what I'm saying.
- 12:16Speaker 4: Still to come on The Potter's Touch.
- 12:19Speaker 2: I'm a runaway.
- 12:21Speaker 1: I'm a runaway from where I started. I'm a runaway
- 12:24Speaker 1: from what I've been through. I'm a runaway from how
- 12:27Speaker 1: they limited me. I'm a runaway from abuse.
- 12:30Speaker 2: I'm a runaway.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Ain't got time to play. Steal away. Ain't got long
- 12:35Speaker 1: to stay here. On the move.
- 12:37Speaker 2: I'm a runaway.
- 13:15Speaker 1: The Bible said no greater love have any man than
- 13:17Speaker 1: this that he would lay down his life for his friend.
- 13:20Speaker 1: I can tell you now honestly and openly that love
- 13:23Speaker 1: is expensive. It will cost you something to do it.
- 13:28Speaker 1: It may even cost everything to give it. But when
- 13:33Speaker 1: it returns, it comes back pressed down, shaken together and
- 13:37Speaker 1: running over. It's a hard test to pass, but it's
- 13:40Speaker 1: worth taking it because you cannot graduate from life without it.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Touch your neighbor and say, Onesimus is coming. I prophesied
- 13:53Speaker 1: to you today, Onesimus is coming. Somebody who did you wrong,
- 13:58Speaker 1: Onesimus is coming. Somebody that you have every right to
- 14:03Speaker 1: be angry with, Onesimus is coming. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:07Speaker 1: You don't want to hear about this anymore, but I'm
- 14:10Speaker 1: going to crack this egg right in your skillet. Onesimus
- 14:14Speaker 1: is coming to see if you've grown any, if you've
- 14:18Speaker 1: developed any, if you've learned anything, if you've grown in
- 14:22Speaker 1: any way. Onesimus is coming to see if you're still
- 14:26Speaker 1: petty and if you're still small and if you haven't
- 14:30Speaker 1: grown enough to enter into the arena that God wants
- 14:34Speaker 1: to put you in. Onesimus is coming to see if
- 14:37Speaker 1: you've learned anything from all the teaching that you've been getting,
- 14:42Speaker 1: Onesimus has got to come. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He says,
- 14:56Speaker 1: I want to see if you can receive Onesimus.
- 15:03Speaker 2: As a brother.
- 15:06Speaker 1: I want to see if your perspectives have grown to
- 15:10Speaker 1: the degree that you can receive somebody that you defined
- 15:14Speaker 1: in one light. Can you now see them in another light?
- 15:21Speaker 1: I want to see if you can receive the new
- 15:25Speaker 1: and improved version of Onesimus. I want to see if
- 15:30Speaker 1: you will hold Onesimus hostage to how you used to
- 15:35Speaker 1: define him. Or have you grown enough to receive him
- 15:41Speaker 1: as he is rather than how he used to be?
- 15:44Speaker 1: I know how he used to be. He was useless
- 15:49Speaker 1: to you before. But I wonder if you will give
- 15:54Speaker 1: Onesimus the same thing that you need.
- 16:02Speaker 2: I wonder if.
- 16:03Speaker 1: You can buy into the growth in Onesimus. He said,
- 16:09Speaker 1: I know that he was useless to you before, but
- 16:14Speaker 1: he is useful now. Now, Paul is being smart. Remember,
- 16:17Speaker 1: Paul is an intellect. And when he writes his love letter,
- 16:22Speaker 1: he writes it from the unique perspective of playing on
- 16:25Speaker 1: words here. Because what you don't know is Onesimus' name
- 16:30Speaker 1: is useful. Onesimus literally translated means I'm useful.
- 16:38Speaker 2: I'm useful.
- 16:40Speaker 1: But his use had been limited to servitude.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Onesimus could not reach.
- 16:50Speaker 1: His destiny with Philemon because Philemon only saw him as
- 16:57Speaker 1: a slave. Sometimes you can't reach your destiny with people
- 17:04Speaker 1: who limit you to how they met you. Y'all ain't
- 17:08Speaker 1: going to talk to me. Y'all not gonna say nothing
- 17:11Speaker 1: to me. Once people see you from a particular perspective,
- 17:17Speaker 1: they will hold you hostage to how they met you
- 17:20Speaker 1: and they won't let you grow and you can't reach
- 17:23Speaker 1: your destiny because what they heard about you or what
- 17:27Speaker 1: they thought about you or what they.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Saw you do had one season in your life.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Onesimus was useful, but he could not find his use
- 17:40Speaker 1: Or his purpose with Philemon. Because Philemon saw his usefulness
- 17:47Speaker 1: only through the parameters of how he met him. He
- 17:52Speaker 1: couldn't unlock his destiny because he was in love with
- 17:56Speaker 1: his history. People who lock into you based on who
- 18:04Speaker 1: you used to be. seldom can unlock your destiny. And
- 18:09Speaker 1: sometimes you have to get away from where you came from. Oh,
- 18:12Speaker 1: y'all aren't going to say nothing to me. I have
- 18:18Speaker 1: noticed throughout my life that people who knew me when
- 18:22Speaker 1: will always kind of get an attitude over who I
- 18:25Speaker 1: am now. And they'll say, you forgot where you came from. No,
- 18:29Speaker 1: I didn't forget. But I sure do wish you would.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Tell three people to say run away, run away, run away.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Run away, run away, run away. Run away from anybody
- 18:50Speaker 1: who wants to hold you down to a childhood decision.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Run away from anybody who wants to lock you down
- 18:57Speaker 1: to how they met you. Run away from anybody who
- 19:00Speaker 1: wants to live your.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Life out as a slave. Slavery is not real use.
- 19:10Speaker 2: It's abuse.
- 19:13Speaker 1: And most useful people have been abused before used.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Because when you're useful, you have a giving heart. And
- 19:33Speaker 1: when you have a giving heart, people will take advantage
- 19:36Speaker 1: of you and they will abuse you.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:43Speaker 1: We're going to get into this Philemon thing this morning.
- 19:48Speaker 2: They will abuse you.
- 19:50Speaker 1: And from all of this, Onesimus ran away. If you've
- 19:55Speaker 1: ever had to run away from somebody who didn't get
- 19:58Speaker 1: who you really were, tell somebody, say, I'm going to
- 20:00Speaker 1: run away. I'm a runaway. I'm a runaway from where
- 20:06Speaker 1: I started. I'm a runaway from what I've been through.
- 20:09Speaker 1: I'm a runaway from how they limited me. I'm a
- 20:12Speaker 1: runaway from abuse.
- 20:14Speaker 2: I'm a runaway. Ain't got time to play.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Steal away. Ain't got long to stay here on the move.
- 20:20Speaker 2: I'm a runaway.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Paul now puts Philemon in a jam. There is no
- 20:34Speaker 1: way that Philemon would receive Onesimus on his own. There's
- 20:41Speaker 1: no way that Philemon would receive Onesimus had he just walked.
- 20:46Speaker 2: In the house.
- 20:48Speaker 1: There's no way in the world that Philemon would have
- 20:50Speaker 1: received Onesimus.
- 20:52Speaker 2: At all if it weren't for a love.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Letter from Paul. Now he's in a predicament. Because the
- 21:03Speaker 1: person that he's angry with is coming to him through
- 21:07Speaker 1: the vehicle of the person that he loves. If he
- 21:14Speaker 1: does not take Onesimus back, he jeopardizes his relationship with Paul. Oh,
- 21:21Speaker 1: y'all don't hear what I'm saying. See, sometimes you need
- 21:24Speaker 1: somebody else to speak for you other than you. Onesimus
- 21:31Speaker 1: has no favor with Philemon, but Paul does. And sometimes
- 21:36Speaker 1: God will give you favor with somebody who has favor
- 21:42Speaker 1: with somebody you don't have favor with to.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Put them in a predicament. If Onesimus would have.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Come to Philemon without the love letter, then Philemon could
- 21:55Speaker 1: have killed Onesimus. The only thing standing between Onesimus and.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Death was a love letter. Oh, you didn't get that.
- 22:07Speaker 1: The only thing standing between Onesimus and death was a
- 22:12Speaker 1: love letter from Paul. Now, Paul leverages who he is
- 22:17Speaker 1: as a spiritual father, and he writes to Philemon, his son,
- 22:22Speaker 1: in the faith. He says, son, uh, Daddy's had another baby.
- 22:34Speaker 1: And incidentally, the new kid on the block is your
- 22:40Speaker 1: old slave, Onesimus. He said, I started to keep him
- 22:48Speaker 1: myself because I fell in love with him and he's
- 22:53Speaker 1: my son and I found him to be profitable to me.
- 22:58Speaker 1: He's useful to me. I'm not sending him back to
- 23:00Speaker 1: you because he's useless. I'm sending him back because he
- 23:05Speaker 1: is useful to you. Some theologians suggest that the book
- 23:11Speaker 1: of Philemon is only included in the canonical scriptures because
- 23:15Speaker 1: Philemon became useless. the book of Philemon became a work
- 23:23Speaker 1: that Onesimus includes because Onesimus becomes a penman for the
- 23:28Speaker 1: apostle Paul and becomes useful. Others suggest that it goes
- 23:36Speaker 1: even deeper than that, that Philemon becomes an apostle and
- 23:45Speaker 1: does a great work in And Onesimus ends up pastoring
- 23:50Speaker 1: Timothy's old church and becomes the bishop over the church
- 23:56Speaker 1: at Ephesus. And he started out a slave. I want
- 24:08Speaker 1: you to understand this morning that it doesn't matter where
- 24:12Speaker 1: you start.
- 24:16Speaker 2: It matters where you finish.
- 24:20Speaker 1: You might not have had a real good start, but
- 24:23Speaker 1: that don't mean you can't have a happy ending. That's
- 24:26Speaker 1: what I love about a good old love story is
- 24:29Speaker 1: that it always has a happy ending. I want to
- 24:33Speaker 1: talk to somebody who had a rough start, but you
- 24:37Speaker 1: expect a happy ending.
- 24:40Speaker 2: I want to.
- 24:44Speaker 1: I want to send you this This little love letter.
- 24:49Speaker 1: You didn't start so well, baby. But you're going in good.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Hey, hang in there.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Don't move.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Don't go anywhere.
- 25:00Speaker 1: I'll be back in just a minute. If he commands
- 25:04Speaker 1: me to do it, it must be within my power
- 25:08Speaker 1: to accomplish it. Because it wouldn't be just to command
- 25:12Speaker 1: me to do something that I cannot do.
- 25:14Speaker 2: So that means that love is controllable. I give up
- 25:19Speaker 2: everything to follow you.
- 25:20Speaker 1: You wouldn't give up a ham sandwich at 11 o'clock
- 25:23Speaker 1: at night. Imagine how your personal relationships would change if
- 25:29Speaker 1: you loved the people in your life like you love yourself.
- 25:34Speaker 1: The reality is we always want to get more than
- 25:37Speaker 1: we're willing to give. So this second scripture obliterates selfishness.

- 26:09Speaker 1: We're praying about the destination, but God is planning for
- 26:13Speaker 1: the journey. Where you get in a mundane rut of

- 27:53Speaker 5: through 31st. Register at mega-fest.com or call 1-800-BISHOP-2 today.

- 28:04Speaker 1: But it's been a real joy and a real delight

- 28:13Speaker 1: marriages are falling apart. Our homes are collapsing for the
- 28:17Speaker 1: lack of love. Think about it and have a great
- 28:22Speaker 4: Week.
