Transcript
- 0:12Right, Good afternoon. Welcome, Miller and Condon on a
- 0:16Tuesday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:18Trent Condon and Kendall are with you for the next couple of
- 0:21hours talking sports with you. And thank you for starting your
- 0:23afternoon here with us. Wherever you're listening in the
- 0:26state of Iowa or anywhere on the iheart app flagship here out of
- 0:30Des Moines Sports station One O 6.3 KXNO.
- 0:34Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:36We'll start with our first guest about 25 minutes, Matt Snyder
- 0:40from CBSSports.com. We'll recap the World Series.
- 0:43We'll take a look at some of the opt outs and where some of those
- 0:46may be heading. Show they Imanaga has joined the
- 0:50list. He is opting out of his contract
- 0:52with the Cubs. Some other big names as well,
- 0:55not yet with the Cubs. Others, I should say, not on
- 0:59that Cubs roster. But we'll get into all of the
- 1:01names that are out there and recap what was I think a
- 1:03phenomenal, worse, maybe the best since 9191 was
- 1:07unbelievable. Braves and the Twins.
- 1:09We'll see you tomorrow night. Such a great World Series.
- 1:12But this one had its had its moments as well.
- 1:15Just not enough of them for my sake.
- 1:17So we'll do that with Matt Snyder.
- 1:18Then David Eichel is going to join us.
- 1:21We will preview the Ben McCollum debut tonight.
- 1:25And also the press conference is going on football players
- 1:28meeting with the media as we speak.
- 1:30Kirk Ference at 1:45. So I cult will join us here in
- 1:3445 minutes. Our number two Bill Seals covers
- 1:37Iowa State will go back to the Arizona State game from
- 1:41Saturday. We'll talk about that with Bill.
- 1:43We'll go back to last night at Hilton Coliseum as the Iowa
- 1:48State men began their season convincing win over Fairly
- 1:52Dickens. I couldn't get, I got through 20
- 1:55minutes and that was enough. It's just bad.
- 1:58But not not them. They were good, but just they're
- 2:00just a different level of competition and they're toying
- 2:03with this team. So I'd seen enough and I went
- 2:05back to Monday Night Football full time after that.
- 2:08So that's the show. Bamba Bob at 1:30.
- 2:10We'll preview what we may see tonight as the committee will
- 2:13unveil a week number one of his College Football Playoff
- 2:16rankings. Trent will make some picks.
- 2:17It's basketball season. It's his time of year, so we'll
- 2:21see. What if he's got a couple of
- 2:22those plays coming up here tonight?
- 2:24But what a weekend it was. We had the day off yesterday.
- 2:27Boy, it's 973 days off. Got to be honest with you.
- 2:29Well, you can have a lot of days off coming up here in what, two
- 2:32months? But I got to be honest, it was
- 2:34nice staying home on Monday. But at the same time, there was
- 2:38so much that we could have talked about, including, I want
- 2:40to start with the World Series. Do you know what it was, Trent?
- 2:42It was it rekindled my that's dwindling pageant.
- 2:47It's still always going to be my team, but you know, I wasn't
- 2:51living and dying with, you know, every night of the 162 like it
- 2:56once was. It was phenomenal.
- 2:58It was fascinating. I thought the Jays had it a
- 2:59couple of times, kind of faleppa.
- 3:02I'm taking the shortest lead of anybody that's straight off
- 3:05third base all season long. I guess they're Game 6 fresh in
- 3:09their mind with the Bang Bang play at second base, the double
- 3:12play to end the game there, but out by an inch.
- 3:14There were so many chances. The paw heads catch in right
- 3:16field. That thing I.
- 3:18Thought that was going on the ground.
- 3:19I really did. And Kiki Hernandez looked up at
- 3:21pauses with high school. Tell me you caught the ball.
- 3:23He didn't know, had no idea. But in the end it was the
- 3:27Dodgers. And they repeat.
- 3:29But I thought it was a fascinating World Series.
- 3:32I know I'm closer to it than 99% of the people here because I'm a
- 3:36Jays fan. But I thought it was really good
- 3:38theatre. I really did.
- 3:39I thought baseball had a terrific month of October.
- 3:41For myself, and I'm going to guess a majority, a huge
- 3:46majority of our audience without a rooting interest didn't have
- 3:49one side or the other. For you, of course, yeah, I
- 3:52wanted your Blue Jays to win because of that.
- 3:54But but short of that, to have that kind of World Series with
- 3:57this behemoth that is the Dodgers, the star power, the
- 4:00storyline with Otani who had well in my house casuals, my
- 4:04wife wanted to watch every at bat that Otani was up there.
- 4:09And I'm going to guess that she wasn't alone.
- 4:10I mean, you have that angle to it.
- 4:12And then to get seven games, and not just seven games, but some
- 4:15incredible ones from an 18 inning game without the
- 4:19interest. There's many a times in the
- 4:21World Series where football takes precedence, where where
- 4:24football just, it rules the day for me.
- 4:28And that was not the case for this World Series.
- 4:30And not just Tuesday and Wednesday.
- 4:31Like we like to jump. In on Friday and Saturday.
- 4:33Yes, it was Friday, Saturday, locked and loaded and just how
- 4:37important and how the theatre of it rekindles.
- 4:40I know a lot of those memories for a lot of people and you see
- 4:43the TV numbers with a Canadian team that obviously does not
- 4:47rate here at the same level to see the numbers that they're
- 4:50doing and surpassing. Now what we've seen from the
- 4:54NBA, baseball is moving up. Had a great month, fucked over
- 4:58it went. From, you know, over the last
- 5:00decade, a lot of the talk of and it's real that it's a very
- 5:03regional sport and Jack. DRY is a perfect example.
- 5:06Yes, Central Iowa should have been all over this kit.
- 5:09And just wasn't. Yeah, because it's the Dodgers.
- 5:12And yeah, what people care about here is the Cubs.
- 5:14You know, what people care about is the regional teams, Cubs,
- 5:17Cardinals, Twins, Brewers and Royals, White Sox that Royals
- 5:22ahead of the White Sox, White Sox at the bottom of the list.
- 5:24But those are the teams that matter because that's what this
- 5:27sport is. But it still can generate
- 5:29interest on a national level. And it was great to see that
- 5:32show up in the television numbers.
- 5:34Just looking at social media, the amount of people that were
- 5:37into this World Series baseball is back and how figure out the
- 5:41finances because you cannot afford a work stoppage here.
- 5:452027, yeah. You got a lot of momentum behind
- 5:47you. You've got another year.
- 5:48You've got some time to figure it out.
- 5:50But you're that's a great point, Trent, Get that thing done
- 5:53because you're kind of riding on a high probably.
- 5:56I got to think it'll carry over at least for a while into next
- 5:58year. Look, it's a long season.
- 5:59I get that. The crazy part is we're two
- 6:02months away, two full months away from pitchers and catchers
- 6:07reporting like Valentine's Day baseball reports back for duty,
- 6:11which is just crazy to think it's such a long season.
- 6:14But man, oh man, it's such a fun season, especially the month of
- 6:17October. The play offs, the just
- 6:19fascinating theory, the drama. Friday night, the double play.
- 6:24Hernandez again making a heads up play at second base to get
- 6:27the double play on the fly out. Boba Shetz.
- 6:32That wasn't a bat flip. It was a bat drop.
- 6:34But but just him walking out of the batter's box, knowing that
- 6:38bad boy's flying out of the into the seats in Rogers Center.
- 6:43That was a hell of a game, really was.
- 6:45Listening I listened to Richard Deitch, who is the sports media
- 6:49columnist over at The Athletic and.
- 6:51He lives in Toronto. He does, and he had I think 3
- 6:55different times, including a recap yesterday, listen up my
- 6:58way over to Iowa City and he was talking to a Blue Jays reporter
- 7:03and somebody's been in Toronto forever.
- 7:05And just hearing them talk about the way that this grabbed the
- 7:09city unlike anything that certainly died just seen in his
- 7:12decade living in Toronto. And this guy who's been there, I
- 7:14mean, he was talking about the early 80s Blue Jays teams, those
- 7:17good teams that they had before breaking through in the early
- 7:1990s with the World Series, he said.
- 7:21He hasn't seen seen anything like it.
- 7:22And we know the Maple Leafs and their problem 60.
- 7:26Seven, you know. It's been a long time, he said.
- 7:28That this team, the likeability, just for whatever reason, this
- 7:32was a team more than the Raptors that people were engaged with.
- 7:35And the thing that you bring up from time to time, and I think
- 7:38sometimes we miss as Americans is this is border to border.
- 7:44Well, hockey, you got six of them up, right.
- 7:47Not the case with baseball. There's one and it's border to
- 7:51border. So this wasn't just a Toronto
- 7:53story up there. So this was.
- 7:54I'm just doing math in my head but.
- 7:56This was a Canadian story. And because of that, just the
- 7:59merchandise flying off the shelves and people waiting in
- 8:02line at 8:00 AM day of the game to get in, to get in, to get the
- 8:07merchandise. And they're already wearing Blue
- 8:08Jays gear, but they're still doing it 'cause they want to get
- 8:11more. And just the way that it grabbed
- 8:13a hold of that, so many opportunities, such a great
- 8:15world it. Really.
- 8:16Was half the country is was watching?
- 8:19What was the other half watching?
- 8:21I guess Hockey Night in Canada, probably.
- 8:24Unbelievable. Let's get Joe, then we'll move
- 8:26on. Want to talk about Iowa State
- 8:27where their football season is at at this point as they have
- 8:30now lost foreign role off to TCU this weekend.
- 8:33Thunder Joe joins the program. Hello, Joe, How are you?
- 8:37Hey, good afternoon. Fellas, first we'll start with
- 8:40Thunder off to a great start. I'm not saying 82 and O maybe
- 8:438281 and maybe 81 and one. No, let's let's let's bring back
- 8:48to the World Series here. And I was watching it.
- 8:50Ken and Trent and bottom of the ninth.
- 8:53They load the bases at the bottom of the ninth right.
- 8:55Yeah, yeah. OK.
- 8:57I'm one out, one out, bases loaded.
- 8:59Yep. OK, Small ball is non existence
- 9:03anymore. As I'm watching this, I'm like
- 9:04Schneider, you can steal the World Series here with a suicide
- 9:07squeeze. Worst case scenario you have two
- 9:10outs with the bases loaded. But right here, nobody's
- 9:12nobody's looking for them to have.
- 9:15Why is Small Ball gone far away from the game where that game
- 9:19could have been stolen right there?
- 9:21Yeah, interesting because Bichette single kind of Faleppa
- 9:25comes in, Barger walked and and the inning started out with
- 9:30Guerrero flying out. So there's one out.
- 9:33All of a sudden the Jays get 2 on 1st and 3rd and then Kirk
- 9:39hits into the double play. Yeah, Fairpoint, that's a fair
- 9:43question. I never, I never, never popped
- 9:45into my head, but yeah, that's good.
- 9:47Because I mean, Bar show would have been, would have factored
- 9:50into there somewhere. And that guy's got speed.
- 9:52Yeah, he does. Yeah, I mean, I just, I just
- 9:54feel like the the game of small ball has gone away and it could
- 9:58have been stolen right there. Like I said, worst case
- 10:00scenario, yeah you end up with a bank bloated 2 hours.
- 10:02Right, 'cause it was Varsho that that grounded into the, was it
- 10:05Kirk or was it it was Varsho at that point?
- 10:07It was Kirk later on. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:10Oh my God, So many chances man. I mean, hindsight's hindsight's
- 10:142020. Sure, that's the time I'm
- 10:15watching it, but it could have been stolen right there.
- 10:18He was up by 6 inches, up by 6 inches and and Rojas bobbled the
- 10:22ball. He bobbled the ball in second
- 10:23base before he was able to throw home.
- 10:25So anyways, Joe, thanks for the call Bud.
- 10:27Appreciate it. Good to hear from you.
- 10:30Had the not just the Bob, he kind of stumbled.
- 10:33He did. And what he stumbled is like,
- 10:34oh, that ball's going to sail. How many times have you seen
- 10:36that? Yes, just a little bit off it.
- 10:39And then he comes up and hits the home run.
- 10:41It's that insult to injury. With two out, was it 3, two or
- 10:45three? One the count and it was.
- 10:47I might have been 322 out one pitch.
- 10:49You ain't Hoffman. I've been killing him all year.
- 10:50I knew it was going to. I did think it was going to get.
- 10:53I was not I was not going to send a text after that one, but
- 10:56the thought were what trend? I've heard this conversation
- 10:59plenty of time. I shut my phone off and I never
- 11:01do that. I'm seldom do.
- 11:02I was in my living room pacing back and forth.
- 11:05I loved this. I'd loved it, absolutely loved
- 11:07it. My passion for my Jays back full
- 11:09swinging. My old man would have loved it.
- 11:10God, he would have loved it. Tony.
- 11:12How are you, Tony? Hey, how you guys doing?
- 11:16I was just saying I two things. Number one, I worked at Free
- 11:20Meadows Casino and table games and on Friday night at the whole
- 11:23casino in that area, really edge of the base.
- 11:27Oh yeah. You can just hear it, you know,
- 11:28I mean, like you talk about, you know, you hear it in the sports
- 11:31stuff, you can hear it in the table games area.
- 11:33Wow, just the reaction of all the plays and you can just feel
- 11:36it in the air too. And it wasn't football on
- 11:39Friday. People were locked into that
- 11:40baseball game on Saturday. Good.
- 11:44Yeah, Next time I'm out there, Tony, look me up because I'm out
- 11:48there periodically. Yeah, I, I Yeah, I.
- 11:51I've seen you up on the TV screen and everything while I'm
- 11:54at work, so come. Say, hey, yeah, go ahead.
- 11:57Just one quick thing, I'm I'm spoke tonight, I'm on my way
- 12:00over to Iowa City right now from Altoona and I'm going to the
- 12:03game so can't wait. Nice.
- 12:05See you over there. Tony, are you going to transit?
- 12:07Oh yeah. This is the the infamous Floyd
- 12:10of Boater weekend. This is when we have our our
- 12:14annual everybody comes back. Yeah, everybody gets together on
- 12:18a Tuesday. Well, no for Saturday.
- 12:20Oh, but yeah, that tailgate for this weekend.
- 12:23And this is going to be I almost got a chance.
- 12:28Yes, they do, Tony, enjoy yourself.
- 12:30Thanks for the call, bud. Appreciate it.
- 12:31Thanks, guys. Yep, take care.
- 12:33Good to hear from you as we talk a little baseball, more baseball
- 12:36with Matt Snyder coming up. Phenomenal words. 91 fair
- 12:39comparison. Oh, absolutely.
- 12:41I mean, I know Cubs fans want to put theirs up there.
- 12:44The Game 7 was excellent. It was, it was but but Twins,
- 12:47Braves had more of them. The Big Red Machine had some.
- 12:51Got some classics, Cardinals, Tigers and 68.
- 12:55The really the first one I remember, Mickey Lolich, look it
- 12:58up. You won three games, three
- 13:01games. You know what else stands out in
- 13:03those three games? He won.
- 13:04He went the distance. Complete game.
- 13:06Complete Game. Complete game.
- 13:08Complete Game, The big left-hander.
- 13:11Now they open up a bunch of donut shops.
- 13:12He was my favorite player as a kid after Colfax retired.
- 13:17Iowa State. Where do they go?
- 13:21Rock go back. What do they do?
- 13:24He can't set him, can you? Trend he's hurting his team and
- 13:28if he's hurt like Cyclonation as he is, what's he doing playing?
- 13:33I have more respect for the medical staff at Iowa State than
- 13:36they do because if he is hurt, he wouldn't be playing.
- 13:39I truly want to believe that he's not concussed or they
- 13:41wouldn't send him out. Oh.
- 13:42If he's concussed, absolutely not right and listen that is
- 13:46that is smooth minded thinking. If a guy, there is no way in the
- 13:50year 2025, right, that a player is concussed and they're
- 13:54continuing to trot him out there, come on.
- 13:56I mean, use a little bit of brain power, right?
- 13:59If, if that is your take, you're a stupid person.
- 14:02Let's be honest. Yeah, it's 2025.
- 14:04Yes. It's not not Yeah, it's not
- 14:061970s, eighties there. There's medical people in place
- 14:10for 2012. Yeah.
- 14:13I don't know. I I don't know what you would
- 14:15do, but you know what he's. Hurting his team and he's hurt,
- 14:19injured again. We get into that.
- 14:21What is the difference between him?
- 14:23He doesn't look right. Well, he doesn't.
- 14:24Show up on the on the availability report.
- 14:26So if he doesn't show up on the he wants.
- 14:28To be fine. Or this is a Utah situation.
- 14:31Well, could be that too. Since he took that hit against
- 14:34Cincinnati, he has rarely looked like the same guy that we've so.
- 14:38You think he's seen ghosts? No, I just think that he is
- 14:42banged up. I think that he's not playing at
- 14:44100%, and plenty of guys can get through that.
- 14:48But when you don't have two NFL receivers, when you don't have a
- 14:53offensive line that is elite by any measure, right, when you
- 14:57have those kind of issues, this is what's going to show up.
- 14:59But I think more than anything, look, Chase Soul, nice, nice.
- 15:04Not what we're used to for that #1 receiver at Iowa State, they
- 15:09don't have that guy. Nope.
- 15:11And there's only so many things that you can do and dial up with
- 15:14Eskelton. They do it early in the game,
- 15:16right? And that's it.
- 15:17Tight. Ends are not, I mean Bramer.
- 15:18I thought Bramer is going to have a breakout year.
- 15:20Berkel with the drop. Berkel with the drop, Eli Green
- 15:23had one good catch, and they, I mean, the receivers are just not
- 15:26good. The running game.
- 15:28Carson Hansen was. It was his day.
- 15:29It was his turn. I'll tell you, the best Cyclone
- 15:31was on the field, and for my money, it's not even close.
- 15:34Who's on the other side of the ball?
- 15:35Cooper rebels. Unbelievable.
- 15:36Yeah. Good God, he's a player, right?
- 15:38Around making some. He is unbelievable.
- 15:40He's really playing as you know what off.
- 15:42But they got. They got gashed, gashed by by
- 15:45the. Quarterback, we said there was
- 15:46one path for Arizona State. It was to run, run, run.
- 15:50You know, Jeff Sims, but. I thought it would be relief
- 15:52Brown who was going to be doing all the damage and they for the
- 15:54most part held him in check. But it was just Jeff Sims.
- 15:57God, they could not tackle this dude.
- 15:59So here comes, here comes Hoover and company for TCU this weekend
- 16:04and he's what's Josh Hoover's 22 touchdowns to 8 picks.
- 16:08So maybe a little bit not quite as good as we thought it was
- 16:11going to be, but I don't know. I mean, are we going to be
- 16:14staring down the barrel of the better held beat Oklahoma State
- 16:17or this team's not going to post season?
- 16:19Are we on the precipice of that being a talking point?
- 16:22I think that's the most likely scenario, isn't it?
- 16:24Because you know Daniel is going to run his ass off when they
- 16:26play Kansas. And what can't they do right?
- 16:28You know, quarterbacks that can run are there kryptonite?
- 16:32I think. That is absolutely the way this
- 16:35is going to play out. They're going to be playing Oh
- 16:37Jesus in Stillwater for bowl eligibility.
- 16:40And if that team has any pride, yeah.
- 16:44And I'm not sure at this point. Cause Oklahoma State has quit
- 16:46yes, with a capital cube, but it's.
- 16:48Senior day now, I don't know, will that mean anything at that
- 16:51point for this? You know, you just, I can't
- 16:55believe we're at this point. I truly can't.
- 16:57No, not at all. I mean the way that they, I
- 16:59mean, you go back to a season ago and all the losses that they
- 17:01had at linebacker and just to persevere and find a way and
- 17:05then to have the, it doesn't, it's not just the team.
- 17:08It doesn't look like the same program.
- 17:09No. Something it feels like it's
- 17:13just more than yeah, I. Hate to say this, and I'm not
- 17:16saying to get a smirk or a laugh or AUA hole.
- 17:19You know what they need? They need the guy in Ohio.
- 17:22You're on the hot seat, Campbell.
- 17:25Bring him back, Bring him back. Well, I know he's there.
- 17:27I mean, he goes to all the games.
- 17:29This guy lied let his spark last time and I don't know if he can
- 17:31do it again. You you went to they played that
- 17:33card once. But something is wrong with this
- 17:35team. Something is wrong with this
- 17:37team and and I don't know if it's it, it probably starts with
- 17:41the most important position in all the sports, right?
- 17:44It's Rocco Beck is just not playing well.
- 17:47I think it starts and ends there.
- 17:48I get his receivers are gone. Did his receivers actually make
- 17:54Rocco Beck look better than he was?
- 17:56Can we ask that question? Is that unfair to put it in that
- 17:59respect? His chase soul, Nice player,
- 18:05nice player. But you, you need a couple more
- 18:07chase souls, right? You just do the running game.
- 18:11Carson Hansen one week, Boo Sama the next week.
- 18:14But it's it's the open receivers.
- 18:17It's the bad misses. I mean, the the, the game ending
- 18:21play was a perfect example. What was it 4?
- 18:25I'll say 4th and eight. I don't remember off the top of
- 18:27my head exactly what it was, but you, you throw the ball into the
- 18:30ground for six yards. I mean, soul's on the ground.
- 18:34Once the ball's on the ground, the play is dead.
- 18:35In college, it's not like you can roll to the to pick up the
- 18:38first down. And that was a poorly thrown
- 18:41football. It it it kind of reminded me of
- 18:45Hank Brown. Missing on the screen.
- 18:48Missing on that screen pass that play was there to accept.
- 18:51Now I don't know if it would have made a difference or not,
- 18:53but for the game to end like that it just kind of summed up
- 18:56exactly what we're seeing. It's really unfortunate.
- 18:59Let's get to Joe real quick and then we'll get to a break.
- 19:02We'll get Matt Snyder in here on baseball.
- 19:04Joe, how are? You good?
- 19:07I'm a huge Iowa State fan. I want to know when they're
- 19:10going to switch to a four man front.
- 19:12To. On defense, to get keep the
- 19:15quarterback contained and get pressure on him so that he can't
- 19:19sit back and just pick the defense apart on the secondary
- 19:23because we sucked there too. Well, you're two corners.
- 19:27Yeah, you're right. You mean they've they figured
- 19:28Haycock out, it looks like. I think that's probably part of
- 19:32it. Yeah.
- 19:33Joe, thanks for the call, man. Go ahead, finish up.
- 19:35Thank you. Nope.
- 19:35Nope. You go ahead.
- 19:36Thank you. Joe, appreciate the call.
- 19:38Yeah, it's a good point. It is.
- 19:39They can't generate pressure. I mean, you look at their
- 19:41pressure, worry, they're amongst the worst in all of college
- 19:43football. You can't get to the
- 19:45quarterback. It's not working.
- 19:47No. And it was something that was
- 19:49innovative, that was elite. You have to have an elite guy in
- 19:53the middle. They had that with Dom Orange
- 19:55and they've had guys before. Dom Orange is banged up and they
- 19:58just can't get and how many times you just see quarterbacks.
- 20:01Happened in that pocket, happened, happened because
- 20:04there's no pressure coming. There's nothing.
- 20:06They're just sitting back, sitting back.
- 20:07And if you get a quarterback 468 seconds to find somebody, even
- 20:12if you got 8IN coverage, they're eventually going to be able to
- 20:15find somebody. If not Jess Sims, just scoot for
- 20:17another 12 yards. Sauce Gardner is a Colt for two
- 20:21first round picks. Rashid Rashad Shaheen Am I
- 20:25saying it right? The New Orleans speedster is a
- 20:28Seahawk I. Love that one I.
- 20:30Love that move. I like both of the moves now.
- 20:31I think the Colts gave up a bounty.
- 20:33I mean, two first round picks, Hayden.
- 20:36Jones is going to beat Patrick Holmes and Josh Allen in the
- 20:39playoffs. Not so sure.
- 20:42Seems like a lot, Sam. Darnold.
- 20:44He's not beating anybody in January.
- 20:45I'm telling you this. Team is for real, they're good.
- 20:48I'm telling you, and I've been trying to tell you, you keep
- 20:50saying, yeah, come talk to me in January.
- 20:52Probably right. We'll talk to Matt Snyder.
- 20:54He's next. Before we go to break, time for

- 21:11Snyder next. Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 21:13Sports Radio. I'm Laurie Condon, welcome back
- 21:29just before 12:30 on a Tuesday. David Icolt on Iowa coming up
- 21:34here in about 15 minutes. Let's talk some baseball with
- 21:36our buddy Matt Snyder. Covers the series.
- 21:38Covers baseball for CBSSports.com.
- 21:41CBSSports.com. What a what a World Series.
- 21:43Matt Snyder. It truly was.
- 21:45Even though it didn't go the my team's way, it was a fascinating
- 21:49watch. All seven games had a little
- 21:51something. You were there on Monday night
- 21:53for the marathon in LA, back-to-back to Toronto for game
- 21:576:00 and 7:00 and just a fascinating World Series.
- 22:01I thought baseball overall had a really good month of October.
- 22:05Totally agree. Yeah, I mean, it's the first
- 22:08couple rounds. I'm glad you said the whole
- 22:09month, Yeah, because the first couple rounds were were really
- 22:13exciting as well. There were a lot of little
- 22:16things that were, were exciting to see, but also there were some
- 22:21like big ticket items. I mean, you you had Otani was
- 22:25probably the greatest individual game that we've ever seen from
- 22:28somebody with three home runs and throwing 6 shutout innings.
- 22:31You had Otani getting on base nine times in game three, which
- 22:35is ridiculous. And in part, it wasn't like
- 22:37singles and walks. There were two home runs and two
- 22:41double s in there too. And then that, you know, Freddie
- 22:43Freeman and another walk off, then the Blue Jays, that the
- 22:46back-to-back home runs to start game five.
- 22:49Yeah, game that that was the first time that had ever
- 22:52happened in a World Series game. So like just a lot of different
- 22:56things that were either incredibly rare, incredibly
- 22:59exciting, incredibly, you know, important or had never happened
- 23:03before. So yeah, it was great post
- 23:07season in all. And I, I just saw the the
- 23:10ratings number from Game 7 was like more than double the NBA
- 23:13Finals Game 7, which that by the way, is only America.
- 23:17So that doesn't even count most of Canada probably watching 50.
- 23:21Percent of the country, apparently.
- 23:23Yeah, so I think it was an absolutely monster.
- 23:27And again, that's only USA. There's a global audience there,
- 23:30especially with the Dodgers being in the Japan Shohei Otani,
- 23:36Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Roki Suzaki. So like I that was that was one
- 23:43for the ages in many, many respects.
- 23:45Absolutely incredible. I mean, a Game 7 where the
- 23:49Dodgers start with Otani Glass, now starter Snell starter
- 23:53Yamamato coming back a day later as a star.
- 23:56I'm just it also shows you the change and how baseball is so
- 23:59much different. The way that this series played
- 24:01out, the plays at the plate, how many plays at the plate do we
- 24:04have in this series? Just on and on and on.
- 24:06So you know, the arrow that we live in, Matt Snyder, we got to
- 24:08rank everything. Where does this rank for you?
- 24:11Where, where is this World Series?
- 24:12Because it is way up there for me.
- 24:15Yeah, I actually did the, I always do ranking the last 10
- 24:18World Series every single year I do it.
- 24:20And I had this one number two behind 2016.
- 24:24I could understand arguments for this 1 / 2016.
- 24:27It's for me being a Cubs fan in the circumstances behind the
- 24:31Cubs versus Cleveland at the time with those droughts.
- 24:35And you know, keep in mind that one also went extra innings in
- 24:37Game 7 and there were three one run games in that series.
- 24:41So pick your poison on that one. But I, I, I came up with a quick
- 24:47list in the intro to that on some of the best ones of all
- 24:49time. And I had 9 on it.
- 24:52So the, the this one was I I think in the top nine all time.
- 24:57Yeah, fascinating stuff, no doubt about it.
- 25:00We'll see where both franchises go.
- 25:01I'm already here. And Kyle Tucker to the Dodgers.
- 25:03I mean, come on, Enough is enough.
- 25:06You're a Hall of Fame voter, but I don't think that you're part
- 25:09of this. What are we, the contemporary
- 25:12baseball era? Who?
- 25:13Who picks up this committee? Who's on that, Matt?
- 25:16Yeah, it'll be 15 people at the winter meetings.
- 25:20They meet in their room. There's always a mix.
- 25:23They will have like current Hall of Fame players, usually four or
- 25:27five. They will have some former
- 25:29managers. They'll have some former
- 25:30executives. They'll have a historian.
- 25:32They'll have a couple media people.
- 25:35If you remember when Harold Baines got in, there was a lot
- 25:38of talk about how Tony Larusa was on the panel, he having
- 25:41managed with the White Sox, and Larusa had kind of convinced
- 25:44everybody in there. So it's it'll be a panel.
- 25:49Like just as an example, I know that a couple of years ago Theo
- 25:52Epstein was in there, for example, on the media side, it
- 25:56will be somebody long, long, long tenured, like Peter Gammons
- 25:59has done in that in there before.
- 26:02So it and then, you know, again, like I said, like current Hall
- 26:05of farmers who were players. So I think Ozzy Smith has been
- 26:09on it before. So you'll get like a mixed bag
- 26:12of people from different, you know, walks of life, but they're
- 26:18all hardcore baseball people and they'll discuss.
- 26:21And I assume you have the statistical historians in there
- 26:25to try to say where these guys would rank statistically.
- 26:28Then you have the people who played with or against these
- 26:30guys or manage them or what have you, and they all cast
- 26:35individual votes. But you get the feeling that
- 26:38they kind of come to consensuses on these players and but you
- 26:43know, sometimes they'll be split, but a lot of times you'll
- 26:46see you guys get either zero votes or most of them.
- 26:49And one person gets in. Here's the people that are up
- 26:52there, the nominees, Barry Bonds, Roger Clements, Carlos
- 26:55Delgado, Jeff Kent on Mattingly, Dale Murphy, Gary Sheffield.
- 26:58Fernando Mattingly I think is a Hall of Famer.
- 27:01Likewise with Murphy and Fernando.
- 27:03Fernando, obviously Clements and Bonds are, but we know what's
- 27:06keeping them out. How many is this a one person
- 27:09gets in? Or can there be more this time
- 27:11do you know? So I immediately at the top, I'm
- 27:14going to eliminate Bonds and Clemens.
- 27:15They were on three years ago and got zero votes.
- 27:18And I just think that the people who would vote them in are guys
- 27:23like me who are not tenured long enough to get in that room.
- 27:28And a lot of the former players are hardcore nosed.
- 27:31So I just think that it's going to be a long, long time before
- 27:34they would be considered. I it's probably actually a waste
- 27:36to even have them on here because you could get some other
- 27:40guys on there like Kenny Lofton, for example, who I desperately
- 27:44think should be in. I would much rather see him get
- 27:46a shake right now. But I do think that the
- 27:50committee, remember, this committee is the same one now.
- 27:53It might be different people, but it's the contemporary Air
- 27:56Committee who voted in Fred McGriff a few years ago and gave
- 27:59zero votes to Barry Bonds and Roger Clement.
- 28:01So that's where you could see an Ave. for Don Battingley, Dale
- 28:05Murphy, Jeff Kent. I also think that you generally
- 28:09see a bump after guys have died recently.
- 28:12We saw it happen with Ron Santo. We saw it happen with Dick
- 28:15Allen, Fernando Valenzuela right before the World Series last
- 28:18year passed the way. And it gives kind of a renewed
- 28:21focus on not just the numbers, because his numbers career wise
- 28:26kind of falls short in terms of the counting stats, like how
- 28:30many strikeouts did he rack up, how many wins, all that.
- 28:32But if you look at the first half of his career before his
- 28:36arm obviously fell apart, he was the Hall of Famer type pitcher
- 28:41for 6-7 years. And I think that the Fernando
- 28:44mania and what he meant for the the Mexican American community
- 28:48in Los Angeles, I think making them fans for life after all the
- 28:55stuff with Chavez Ravine and displacing so many Mexican
- 28:58American immigrants, like there was a historical aspect to what
- 29:03Fernando did for the did. Not realize that.
- 29:06I did not realize that. Wow.
- 29:07In Los Angeles. And I think that that's
- 29:09something that you can include in your criteria when you're
- 29:13talking about if somebody's a Hall of Famer or not.
- 29:15So you mentioned the Cubs a little bit earlier.
- 29:17We got some Cubs news. The Shota and Menaga has opted
- 29:21out a free agent class of starting pitching that isn't
- 29:25great by any means. He got for Amber and we've
- 29:28certainly seen the ups and downs of him.
- 29:30Ranger Suarez, Dylan Cease, not exactly who's who.
- 29:33You know, Shota's going to get some money here.
- 29:35I'm going to guess they'll give the qualifying offer and get a
- 29:37maybe draft compensation. Is it over, though, do you
- 29:40believe with the Cubs and Managua, or do you think that
- 29:42they're going to be a real player?
- 29:44No, I think that was I think I think that this one was the Cubs
- 29:50saying we got some good stuff from him for about 1 1/2 years.
- 29:55He really ran out of gas like half of last year and he's now
- 29:59he's going to be hitting his decline phase.
- 30:01So we will not pay that three years and 57 million and he of
- 30:04course declined the the player option part of that.
- 30:07I think this was getting out before his contract looks bad
- 30:11and he probably getting out at the right time.
- 30:13I mean, if market completely bottoms out, which we've seen
- 30:16before, I mean we saw with Dexter Fowler coming back in
- 30:192016, we saw it with the Mets and Pete Alonzo last year.
- 30:22If it gets to that point, maybe he comes back and they've signed
- 30:26a one year deal with incentives or something like that.
- 30:28But my hunt is that this is it with with Imanaga and the Cubs.
- 30:32And hey, thank you for a really, really good two seasons.
- 30:36And then then he'll be off on his way.
- 30:38Yeah. Kate Horton, And there's help
- 30:40coming. And what's his name?
- 30:42Wiggins. Who's the old?
- 30:43Yeah, and Justin Steele will be coming back.
- 30:45He'll be back probably, you know, Memorial Day or so.
- 30:49I do think the Cubs will be in the market for a front line
- 30:52starter, but Imanaga is not a front line starter.
- 30:54So whether it's via trade, I don't know.
- 30:58Sorry, Trent. But if the twin foot Pablo Lopez
- 31:01and Joe Ryan up on the record, it might be a possibility that
- 31:04Marlins might put Edward Cabrera.
- 31:07They might put Sandy Alcantra up if you believe he can bounce
- 31:10back in his second year after Tommy John surgery or, you know,
- 31:13in free agency. There's even if you don't want
- 31:16to go for Dylan Caesar, Framber Valdez, there's there's a
- 31:19Michael King sitting sitting there.
- 31:21Ranger Suarez, you know, we'll see what kind of offers he gets.
- 31:24So the Cubs will definitely add at least one starter from
- 31:29outside the organization. I just think that this was the
- 31:31end of the road with Imanaga. Awesome stuff.
- 31:34Matt Snyder joins us every single week, except I think you
- 31:36took one week off during the season to talk to us.
- 31:41Let's let this hot stove percolate for a couple of weeks
- 31:43and I'll impose on you in a couple of weeks.
- 31:46Matt, we love what you do for us.
- 31:47Love talking baseball. It was a great month of October.
- 31:49Don't want to see this conversation and anytime soon.
- 31:53Thank you, but I'll read. We'll reach out in a couple of
- 31:54weeks, OK? Yeah, sounds good.
- 31:57Thank you Matt Matt Snyder CBSSports.com is we talk Major
- 32:00League Baseball good hit with Matt Snyder and and again I mean
- 32:03that's he's really good to us. Yes, absolutely.
- 32:05Every single week national guy covers the World Series, I mean,
- 32:08for CBS Sports. And yeah, it's good.
- 32:11Lucky to have him. We are.
- 32:12And I think our audience appreciate if you're a baseball
- 32:14fan, he's a really, really good get.
- 32:16All right, we'll take your time out, David.
- 32:17I call recap what he saw last night.
- 32:19We expect to see tonight what he's listened to today, a
- 32:22Hawkeye conversation. Next, Bill Seals kicks off our
- 32:26number 2 Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 32:36I'm Miller Condon, Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 32:39Trent Condon, Ken Miller, we take you until 2O clock.
- 32:42Let's get David Eichold in here, hawkeyeinsider.com.
- 32:46He joins US 24/7 Sports. David Trenton, Ken, thank you
- 32:49for coming on. Always good to talk to you.
- 32:52We'll get to the Oregon game, which just has a massive feel.
- 32:55It really does. I can't wait.
- 32:58We'll get to Basketball Mints tonight, but let's start with
- 33:00ladies. They were first after all last
- 33:03night. What did you see from Jan
- 33:06Jensen's squad as they made their first, I guess real start
- 33:10of 2526 season? Your thoughts on what transpired
- 33:13last night at Carver? You know, I think it raised a
- 33:17few questions about what this team can be, but I'm also not
- 33:19going to be the person that overreacts after after one game,
- 33:22right? I think this team is going to be
- 33:24very front court heavy and I think there's going to be a lot
- 33:28of production from there. I was pretty much blown away by
- 33:32Ava Hyen. I knew she was going to take a
- 33:33step forward, but you know, I know that they didn't have the
- 33:36most size they're playing against, but Hyen was demanding
- 33:39the basketball in the post. She had about 3 or 4 go to
- 33:42moves. She was a very aggressive on the
- 33:44glass. I thought Hannah Stolky did a
- 33:46nice job in that second-half and if she makes, you know, a three
- 33:49or two a game or can at least showcase that she can be a
- 33:51little bit of a threat, I think that's going to open some things
- 33:54up a little bit. Worried about the turnovers, 24
- 33:57turnovers. I know that Southern through a
- 33:59lot of different pressures at them, some full court presses,
- 34:03you know, when when you are going against a team that has 9
- 34:05freshmen, sophomores like Iowa, they were trying to, you know,
- 34:09force those turnovers and get them out in transition.
- 34:11And they were able to do that a few times.
- 34:12But we saw last year, man, when Iowa turns the ball over that
- 34:16they don't win many games. We saw even though they had Lucy
- 34:18Olson, who was obviously a terrific player in her own
- 34:21right, I was going to need two or three ball handlers to step
- 34:24up to the plate and be able to, you know, go against some of
- 34:27that pressure. But I think as potential be a
- 34:29top 25, top 20 team, I think it's going to be a very good the
- 34:33team. The three-point shooting wasn't
- 34:34great, but again, Jan Jensen doesn't seem worried about that.
- 34:38But I think there's going to be a lot of talent on this year's
- 34:40team as well. But it's going to be one of
- 34:42those things, man, where who's going to be that go to player?
- 34:46Yeah, Lucy Olsen last year yet Caitlin Clark several years
- 34:48before that yet Megan Gustafson, you had Kathleen Doyle, you have
- 34:51Sam Logic, Ali Disterhoff, who's going to be that go to player
- 34:55when you need a bucket. I I think there's a couple
- 34:57people that have potential to be, but I'm very curious how
- 35:00this next couple weeks sort of develop.
- 35:03We'll jump over to the men's side.
- 35:04We'll get our first look at them tonight against Robert Morris
- 35:06and NCAA Tournament team from a year ago.
- 35:08But one of the best players is now on Iowa with El Vero,
- 35:12Fulgaris and a couple that all 5 starters gone from last year's
- 35:15team. What are you looking for here?
- 35:16Iowa favored by 22 1/2 against Bobby MO.
- 35:21Defense, defense and defense, right?
- 35:25I'm really, I'm really interested to see the lineup
- 35:27combinations because I, I think right now Ben is still trying to
- 35:30figure out what the best way to attack opposing teams are.
- 35:33We know that Iowa did not shoot the ball well from three-point
- 35:36range and their two secret scrimmages that let's face it,
- 35:38man, they're not secret scrimmages.
- 35:40We know everything gets leaked out at this point.
- 35:43Very curious how you know it's freshman Tate Sage can be a big
- 35:47part of this team because he really impressed me throughout
- 35:49the summer. I think he played great in Iowa.
- 35:52Second secret scrimmage game. How are the defensive rotations
- 35:55going to be cleaned up? How much pressures are going to
- 35:57be on Bennett's dirt at that starting point guard spot?
- 36:00Are they going to be able to move them off the ball?
- 36:02But I'm just overall really intrigued about the system that
- 36:05Iowa's going to come out and be aggressive in.
- 36:08And I'm very curious how the crowd's going to be because, you
- 36:10know, I think Ben Mccollum's done the right thing behind the
- 36:13scenes. He's taking about every media
- 36:15request, as far as I'm aware of. He's in the, you know, student
- 36:18section during football games. He's done countless public
- 36:21appearances. I don't know how much coffee
- 36:23that man has drank, and somehow more than me.
- 36:25And that's an accomplishment in its own right.
- 36:28But for him to kind of do everything right behind the
- 36:29scenes, how well attended is this game going to be?
- 36:33What's the support going to look like?
- 36:34And how much work does he still have to do to fill Carver back
- 36:38up despite having a new player, a new system?
- 36:40How many people are going to sit there and say, you know what,
- 36:42we'll believe it when we see it. So I think there's a ton of
- 36:46intrigue about this, about this year's team and all the honest
- 36:49man. I don't know if we're really
- 36:50going to know what this team is until halfway through January.
- 36:54I just think that this team is going to get better as year goes
- 36:57long, but we'll be able to figure out what they actually
- 36:59are. January.
- 37:00February. Yeah, I think that's a that's a
- 37:03fair way to put it. Let's Fast forward to Saturday.
- 37:06Not that I don't want to gloss over tonight, I don't.
- 37:09I'm looking forward to that and talking about it tomorrow
- 37:11because we'll watch on the Big 10 Network.
- 37:13But this just has a massive feel at at Kinnock Stadium on
- 37:17Saturday. So much still to play for for
- 37:19Iowa. Not easy by any means.
- 37:20Obviously the next two weeks and then Sparty and then Rayola
- 37:24lists Huskers squad to bring down the curtain on the regular
- 37:28season. But these next two weeks, but
- 37:29this one in particular because I think USC and I know it's going
- 37:32out West and that doesn't bode well for the Hawks.
- 37:34But I'm not sure sure they're you know that they're as good as
- 37:37some people make them up to be. And I was one of those people
- 37:40before. But I still think this Oregon
- 37:42squad is really good. I do.
- 37:44The win at Penn State at the end of September was, you know, one
- 37:48of those all timers, one of the better games of the year.
- 37:50Where are you on this Oregon team?
- 37:53Tough spot, but I think a very winnable game for Iowa.
- 37:56David Eichelt. I think they're going to have a
- 37:59shot, but I also think that Dan Laning is the top three coach in
- 38:02college football. I think he's a maniac and I
- 38:05think he's one of the best young coaches there is.
- 38:06And keep in mind, the last time Iowa played Oregon, Kirk was
- 38:10coaching OL at Iowa. Dan Laning was three years old,
- 38:13might I add. So for some perspective there, I
- 38:16think it's a really talented team.
- 38:17I love Dante Moore. I think he's one of the most,
- 38:19one of the more explosive dual threat quarterbacks in college
- 38:22football. I don't know if he knows how to
- 38:24protect himself on the run. I think that's going to be a big
- 38:26thing. He'll have to transition to
- 38:28whenever he goes to the NFL or if he comes back for another
- 38:31season. I don't think he should, but
- 38:33that's going to be a big deal for him.
- 38:35I think given the way the weather and everything is going
- 38:37to work out too. This is going to be an ugly Big
- 38:3910 style football game. Like the winds are expected to
- 38:41go up to the 25 mile an hour gust.
- 38:43It sounds like it's going to be a rainy game.
- 38:45And I think if you're an Iowa fan, you're going to, you know,
- 38:47I think they're going to love it.
- 38:48I think there's going to be a lot of people that are going to
- 38:50be excited to hammer Bush lights against cans against their head
- 38:53and and do the tarp soft thing in the students section.
- 38:56I think the atmosphere is going to be electric, but I I think
- 38:59it's the biggest home game in four years Price since that Penn
- 39:01State game. At least in going into that sort
- 39:04of field. We know what Penn State end up
- 39:06not being that great. We know Iowa had a decent year,
- 39:09but didn't live up to their own expectations after what happened
- 39:12with Purdue the following week. But this has a very similar
- 39:15feel. And I do think if if you if
- 39:17you're Iowa, you're looking at the ranked losing losing streak
- 39:20against ranked teams, you're looking at the national
- 39:22narrative. How do you kind of overcome
- 39:24that? How do you kind of turn the
- 39:25page? You knock off one of the biggest
- 39:27brands and most talented teams in college football and I and I
- 39:31think Landing knows, I think Oregon knows this is not going
- 39:34to be an easy game, but obviously Iowa's going to be
- 39:36thinking the same thing. But I do think Kinnick's going
- 39:38to be a pretty decent advantage, too.
- 39:40And I think it's going ugly, ugly game.
- 39:42And that's exactly what Iowa wants it to be final. 30 seconds
- 39:45quick hit on Mark Kornowski. You know he had an opportunity
- 39:47to talk with him. Where is he health wise?
- 39:51Yeah, he says. He's not 100%, but it's the best
- 39:53he saw in several weeks. And in all the honest you guys,
- 39:56how many players are really 100% at this point in a year?
- 39:59This is November football. Like Mark Gronowski said, he's
- 40:02not going to shy away from running the football.
- 40:04We know he runs like a full back.
- 40:05As Tim Lester said, like last week, Gronowski is a gamer.
- 40:09He's going to be locked in. I'm not worried about his health
- 40:11whatsoever. David Eichel, 24/7 Sports,
- 40:14hawkeyeinsider.com. David, good to catch up with
- 40:16you. Thank you for jumping on.
- 40:17Appreciate it. Appreciate you guys.
- 40:20Take care, have a good. Week.
- 40:21Yep, you're the same David. I called as we check in on Iowa
- 40:24men tonight. You said 22 1/2 point favorite.
- 40:2722 1/2 Bobby. MO 730 Big 10 network, will they
- 40:32be in? Will the big 10 network be on
- 40:34site? Do you know for this one?
- 40:35Not sure, we'll see. We'll TuneIn at 7:30.
- 40:38We'll find that out. All right, keep it here.
- 40:40We're going to talk. Iowa State coming up next.
- 40:42Bill Seals would kick off the hour.
- 40:43He's just listening to John Haycock and Matt Campbell.
- 40:47Not sure what players were made available were recap last night
- 40:51and yesterday. Double dip for Iowa State women
- 40:54early in the morning. Is that what's kept Trenton eye
- 40:56off the air? And then the men at night?
- 40:59Alec Cohen called both of the games the Bears.
- 41:01Have made a move. Oh, what have they done?
- 41:03They. Have traded for the Browns
- 41:04defensive lineman. Garrett's a bear.
- 41:08Joe Tryon Shoyinka. Not the one I was hoping for.
- 41:13Miller and Con An hour or two is next.
