- 0:50SPEAKER_01: And we are definitely not having issues today.
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: No, it's it it it's okay.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Uh I have a mic problem.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: Oh no.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Once again, um we were talking about this while we were getting set up and thinking that everything was gonna be okay.
- 1:06SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 1:08SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry, that chain of events was just really funny to me.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: It was, it was hilarious.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Um, we were talking about this literally while we were getting set up about how sometimes when we come in to record, the audio and video and output settings will just do whatever the hell they want, regardless of you know, anything that we we have uh set up as defaults or anything like that.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: So, but anyway, hi everybody.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: Um, in before uh as we have previously mentioned, very professional setup A plus fantastic.
- 1:44SPEAKER_03: Oh man.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: Oh gosh, we're only like a hundred something episodes in.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: You know, we're still this is episode 115.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: 115.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: Jesus.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Um I swear to God, every time I I fix one issue, another pops up when it comes to audio or visual or whatever, but that's okay.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: It's fun.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: It's the damn audio gremlins.
- 2:08SPEAKER_03: Listen, I've I've heard and seen worse setups from newscaster.
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: I think I've talked about this.
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: You have talked about this.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: I think that you like specifically have like I'm just saying like a YouTube algorithm built around uh COVID-19, no YouTube news.
- 2:28SPEAKER_03: Even nowadays, even nowadays, no, I'm talking like ESPN like sports analysts.
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: Like even now, you'll see some people that I guess for scheduling conflicts or whatever, they're still like they'll still do like you know, spots and stuff from their like home offices or whatever.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: And you can well, I mean, I we like we can't hear them because it's you know it's mute, because it's a you know, you know what TVs are in public places, but like it they look like they're recording on a potato, you know, and it's like and you're a real, you know what I mean?
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: Like they're you know, like you're on a real you're on a real network with network money, like and not to you know uh show too much of our hands here, but like I spent fifty dollars on this webcam.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it it is not an expensive webcam, exactly.
- 3:26SPEAKER_03: And we look better than some sports analysts on ESPN.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: Lewin has an out for ESPN today.
- 3:33SPEAKER_03: I listen, it's I it's oh it's just what's always on TV.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: Uh I was gonna say yes.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, given Lewin's per like job and like the area, that does not surprise me.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: People here do love their sports ball.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like you know, I I I respect that there can be an entire uh field of journalism around something that I personally do not care about.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: I love that for the sports people, but some of those people do need to get better webcams and better better microphones if they're recording at home, and better upload speeds.
- 4:08SPEAKER_03: And uh I've heard from some people uh uh other other better opinions on ESP.
- 4:15SPEAKER_03: I've heard that from some people who do know things about sports, but that's not me.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: So all that aside.
- 4:22SPEAKER_03: I just had to talk trash on you're so you're so good.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: We'll probably be talking a lot of trash in today's episode.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Oh, good.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: Well, that's good.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, although probably less than the rest of them, because today we're gonna talk about Oral.
- 4:38SPEAKER_03: Less than that.
- 4:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, she's kind of the most normal one.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: She is the most normal one.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: She continues to be the most normal.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: I mean, the bar is on the ground, but I digress.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, just a little bit.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: In before we like go and make a bunch of dumb cheesy jokes about like, oh god, Oral, I wish she'd she'd come here.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she'd use her her magic here.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because we are finally out of like our multiple days in a row, like as in like 60 days in a row, triple digits.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: Dude, yeah, most of next week is only in the the the upper 90s.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: In Fahrenheit, I can't remember the common sense conversion.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: Uh common sense conversion.
- 5:27SPEAKER_03: Thereabouts 37 to 38 degrees.
- 5:30SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 5:30SPEAKER_03: I didn't just switch it to Celsius, I promise.
- 5:32SPEAKER_03: I did the math in my head.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Because you're so good at math.
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: I've been practicing.
- 5:37SPEAKER_03: I I've been practicing my own.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: Wait, you literally do math in your head.
- 5:40SPEAKER_03: Shut up.
- 5:41SPEAKER_03: No, I've been practicing my Fahrenheit to Celsius conversions.
- 5:44SPEAKER_03: Oh, right.
- 5:45SPEAKER_03: But I did, yeah, I definitely did them that time though.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: I would like Oral to have been here for multiple reasons, not the least of which, because I had a number of outfits that would actually like be like very thematic for this episode, yeah, for covering Oral.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: But because of how hot it is, the best you've got is like basically discount midsumar.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Good movie.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: Good movie.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't know.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: You've never seen anything, so it's fine.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 6:15SPEAKER_03: Oh, see, I thought that was a I thought that was a eh of like I didn't really like, you know what I mean?
- 6:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: Nope.
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: I just I haven't seen it.
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: It's a good movie.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: But we are going to go ahead and talk about Oral.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: And there are some parts of like the area, like the areas that Oral occupies that are a little bit like scandy Mitsumar, but I would say that the majority of like the oral heavy regions are very Inuit inspired.
- 6:43SPEAKER_03: Okay, that's cool.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: It is very that's that's that's pretty cool, yeah.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: It's cool.
- 6:49SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 6:51SPEAKER_03: Hey, listen, listen, we were gonna do that at least once this episode.
- 6:55SPEAKER_03: I'm not I'm getting it out of the way, you know what I mean?
- 6:57SPEAKER_03: Like knocking it out because we can only make that joke so many times, but we had to do it at least once.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: I have it like at least three times in my notes, so that's gonna be a problem.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: Okay, well now I feel like I've now I feel like I've I've I've I've superseded you a little bit, I've stepped on your toes a little bit.
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: It's kind of like the one F word that you're allowed in a oh yeah PG 13.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: Well, if we are relegated to only one cheesy joke per episode, we're just gonna have to cancel the whole podcast.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: It's bad.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: We're all in trouble.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: So that being said, let's go ahead and jump into the icy waters.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: I don't fucking know, okay.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: I I I said jump into and I was going to say oral, and I was like, well, that doesn't sound right.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: I mean, I like icy waters.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: Let's take a cold plunge.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: There we go.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: That works.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: That works.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: Um, just as a recap, Oral is the neutral evil goddess of ice and cold and winter.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: She's also known as the Frostmaiden, Ice Dawn, the Cold Goddess, and Lady Frostkiss.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Lady Frostkiss.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: I still love that.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: As of 5th edition, her domains are relegated to Nature and Tempest, but back when there were a million different domains, she had a million different ones, all sort of stemming around ice.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: So her alias is Sakharuk among the people of the Great Glacier, which is sort of that Inuit-inspired region that I mentioned that we would get to.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: And Elifair, which is an archaic name, like probably back like ancient Netheries essentially.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: And then we're barely going to touch it, but Oralander in fourth edition.
- 8:39SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: I do, I do like a uh I do I do see an umlaut though.
- 8:44SPEAKER_03: I do like an umlaut.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: You mentioned that last time, and I still I do agree with you.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: The umlaut was a good choice.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: You know, I was gonna not say that because I was like, I'm pretty sure I commented on the umlaut the last time we talked about um this uh alias of oral from fourth edition, but hey, I still love an umlaut.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Uh an umlau's good.
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I like to see it.
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: But I love these little two dots.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: I actually really don't have any problem with the like, oh, maybe Oral is just short for a longer name.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: I don't even necessarily have problems with the fact that she had like more Fay or like origins in fourth edition.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: It's just like again, it's fourth edition.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: It's fourth edition.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: It was the fact that they were like combining every god into other gods.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: Like it was like it was just exhausting.
- 9:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, though I will say I would be surprised if it turns out that Oral was also actually secretly Grump.
- 9:39SPEAKER_03: That would be wild.
- 9:40SPEAKER_03: Grump Grump if he served.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: Uh no, Oral was secretly the queen of air and darkness in fourth edition.
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: I don't know if Oral serves.
- 9:48SPEAKER_03: I know Umberly serves, but I don't know if Oral serves.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: She kind of does.
- 9:52SPEAKER_03: It's she probably does.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: Um, so her symbol has been pretty much the same throughout, which is a six-pointed snowflake on a gray diamond, and I will show that on our visuals.
- 10:04SPEAKER_03: So it is Oh, that looks that looks cool.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: I like that it does look really cool.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: Like because it's like I like the symbol.
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: I I like that it it looks like it's it's like kind of like etched into it etched into a little bit.
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: Like it's not just like snowflake on it's like the JPEG of a snowflake on a diamond.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, don't get me wrong, they have done some like JPEG of a snowflake on a diamond.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: And it's even when they do that though, I will say they make it look more like carvings of old glyphs.
- 10:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: So it's it's very like it's a lot more simplistic, but it still sort of has that itch vibe.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it doesn't look as like just straight JPEG.
- 10:46unknown: Yeah.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: Not gonna be a lot of visuals today.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: Most of Orl's history is very, well, hilariously enough, oral and written.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: There's not a lot in any of the books in terms of pictures of her.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: It pretty much usually just shows her symbol anytime that she's mentioned.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: And I I would be offended, I guess, on her behalf, but it sort of it it fits because of like the fact that she does have this mysterious vibe.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: There might be some underlying misogyny to it too, just because of the fact that, well, when we get down to her avatars, you'll find out that she for a very long time had a just a very basic visage.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: So there is that.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: But I I don't think it's like it's nothing outright malicious, just sort of sort of one of those things where Oral was probably forgotten about as being someone potentially interesting for a while.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: I will say Ed Greenwood loves this goddess.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: I can tell in his tweets.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: That's good.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: So we will discuss some Ed Greenwood tweets as well.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: So Oral the Frostmaiden is the evil mistress of ice.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: Her domain is cold.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: Uh, she's most powerful in the regions that are affected by deep winners, especially areas known colloquially as the Frostfell.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: Lowercase F Frostfell, because there's also an uppercase F Frostfell.
- 12:07SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's our F-word, guys.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: Uppercase F Frostfell specifically refers to, I think in third edition, uh, the name of her like home plane.
- 12:16SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: In most others, it's like called Winter's Hall or the Hall of the Frost Maiden, things like that.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: But in third edition, it is the Frostfell.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: The term Frostfell, lowercase F, refers to any area dominated by a combination of ice, snow, and extreme cold, much like the Underdark references an endless variety of regions found deep underground.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: For the most part, this might just be considered the polar and tundra regions and high elevation mountains, but given that this is DD, anywhere could become a frostfell with enough magic or curses or like an ice elemental.
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: She's fickle in vain and described as an evil creature whose cold divine heart remains untouched by any hint of true love, noble feeling, or honor.
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: Cool.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: So she has more of like a closed-off sort of evil vibe as opposed to a overtly murder hobo evil vibe.
- 13:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:08SPEAKER_03: Like, I do think it's it is very funny that to me she like is obviously still evil, but given how all of her, you know, all of her cohorts are, like Talos's whole deal.
- 13:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: And Malar's whole deal.
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: And then we got Umberly, the bitch queen, over here.
- 13:31SPEAKER_03: All of them make Oral look like I think so much nicer and more normal by comparison.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, I don't know.
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: But she is still evil.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: See, see, like when I got was going through this, I'm like, I don't think that she's evil.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: I I I really love her.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: And then by by like the end, I was like.
- 13:48SPEAKER_03: Okay, so she is she is evil, but she's like she's like she seems more normal about it.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: Her alignment normal, evil.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: She often toys with her prey and those who offend her, uh, trapping them in snowstorms and driving them insane by tantalizing them with visions of warmth and comforts before she freezes them to death.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: Again, she is evil.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: Reverse oasis.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: Just fucking drop the evil there.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: There was this line in multiple iterations, not just multiple like supplements or like source books, but multiple, multiple additions that I don't like, but uh I have to read it because it does lead into some other stuff.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: Her eternal beauty is cold and deadly, the flower of womanhood preserved forever in a slab of Arctic ice with sensibilities to match.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: What that mean, what that means, I okay I hate the flower of womanhood like a like a Georgia O'Keefe painting.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: Why isn't that like uh I think it means because she is like a frozen in time maiden.
- 14:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and like I think also like maybe because unfortunately, my first thought was like that one of her epithets is the frost maiden.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: You know, so that kind of made me think like, I don't know.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so basically she's beautiful and she's frozen and she's also cruel and icy, quite literally.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: Again, I do not like the uh phrase.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: Um I don't like the phrase, like even if it's not meant in an explicitly like uh Georgia O'Keefe way.
- 15:29SPEAKER_03: Uh well, I mean, I was gonna say, like, which this would be kind of the opposite of Georgia O'Keefe, but like a weird, you know, kind of hashtag men writing women kind of way.
- 15:40SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 15:40SPEAKER_03: It does still sound weird.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:43SPEAKER_03: Like it is just like, why'd you have to use that word?
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: You know?
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: Why'd you have to use those words together?
- 15:49SPEAKER_03: Like when someone uses the word penetrate, even if it like fits in a dictionary definition sense, it's like, why'd you put it that way?
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: Like that is not like it's not necessary.
- 15:59SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't want to hear about anyone's flower of womanhood, you know?
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: Uh stop.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: Um, anyways, I hate it, uh, but it does set up a fun quirk of orals, which is she loves to preserve the things that she finds beautiful by freezing them.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: Okay, that's hot.
- 16:13SPEAKER_03: I don't know why I said that.
- 16:14SPEAKER_03: Sorry.
- 16:16SPEAKER_03: I don't know why I said that, sorry.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: So the things, the people, the creatures.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: I was gonna say, I'm going to assume that means literally like living creatures too.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the environment, anything that she finds beautiful, she wants to preserve it by freezing it.
- 16:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well that's oh, she's like she's didn't didn't oddly poetic.
- 16:38SPEAKER_03: Didn't Mr.
- 16:38SPEAKER_03: Freeze do that with like his his wife or something?
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, that was because she was dying of a right, yeah.
- 16:46SPEAKER_03: And he yeah, okay, that's right.
- 16:48SPEAKER_03: She was like dying of like a terminal illness, and he wanted to like preserve her.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: So that she could be cured later.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 16:55SPEAKER_03: Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: Um, DC comics.
- 16:58unknown: Yeah.
- 16:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, okay.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: So he did it, but he did it altruistically.
- 17:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he didn't he didn't do it just because yeah.
- 17:06SPEAKER_02: He didn't do it just for fun.
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: He did it to save her, but you know, in the whole process of that also became the evil.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: He became evil like after that, not be he he didn't do it because he was evil, right?
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, anyway, to me, Oral sort of gives off the vibe of being appeased primarily through adoration and fear.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: Umberly is similar similar, but I think honestly, Oral kind of craves validation more.
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: Not to psychoanalyze a goddess, but I'm going to.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: She simply wants to be on people's minds.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: Whereas Umberly, I think, gives off the vibe that she wants to be terrifying to people.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: She wants people to constantly be thinking about her because she's so so terrifying.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, okay.
- 17:55SPEAKER_03: No, I I I get what you I'm trying to think of a good whereas like there and there are also plenty of gods in DD who even if they they have and like cultivate followings, they don't really care, you know, like on a personal level.
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: Like their followers are very much a means to an end for them.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: Whereas and and I'll get to it, Oral's followers do very much benefit from her.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: Because on on account of also uh at the very least not being um frozen to death.
- 18:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: Well, hopefully, anyway.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: Like I said, she she really does seem to crave like adoration and worship.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: Later on, she really wants isolation, but then she seeks isolation while living amongst mortals.
- 18:41SPEAKER_02: I mean, okay.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: Ed, in one of his tweets that I mentioned, did address this in response to a question.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: Ed notes that Oral's personality sort of contains multitudes, and that each one reflects a different aspect of winter, and that's why sometimes her own actions seems to seem to be at odds with her desires.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: I see.
- 19:00SPEAKER_03: Okay, we might have to psychoanalyze her because it sounds like she needs therapy.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: She does.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: I think of the gods of fury that would benefit the most from therapy, it's Oral.
- 19:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because she's the she's the only one who I think would even go.
- 19:15SPEAKER_03: Well, you don't think Talos would go?
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: Talos would I think Talos would go to Therapy?
- 19:19SPEAKER_03: Would not go.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: I think Umberly would go to learn therapy speak to uh use it against people.
- 19:24SPEAKER_03: Umberly would go and she would and and she would.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: I really, guys, I really want to do this to my therapist next year on because April Fool's is on the day that I normally go to therapy next year.
- 19:36SPEAKER_03: And I really want to go in and bring it like a notepad and a pen.
- 19:39SPEAKER_03: And every time he says something to me, I bring something.
- 19:43SPEAKER_04: Oh my god.
- 19:44SPEAKER_03: But Umberly would do that.
- 19:45SPEAKER_03: Umberly would go to therapy.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: Umberly would make the therapist cry, yeah.
- 19:49SPEAKER_03: And then Millar would eat his therapist.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Malar would just eat his therapist.
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: Like the it's that's just what'll happen.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: So uh speaking of oral and psychoanalytics, oral's relationships are often fraught, though not near as much as Talos's.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: She was previously close with Talos and Umberly, and likely only tolerated Malar because she had to.
- 20:13SPEAKER_03: The fucking dog is there again.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: As I alluded to in the first Gods of Fury episode, she and Umberly grew apart in recent years as the wrathful sea goddess came to despise her enduring cold and motionless sheets of ice covering her rolling seas, sort of formed an alliance with the other gods of fury against Oral.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: Which dick move.
- 20:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like she's like Umberly's like looking at Talos and Malar.
- 20:40SPEAKER_03: You know, Malar's sitting there just drooling all over the floor.
- 20:45SPEAKER_03: And then she's like, I can't believe I have to team up with these fucking guys.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: So Oral had an an off and on alliance with Iboragu.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: Uh I don't know if I'm pronouncing that right, I'll be honest.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: I forgot to grab the uh pronunciation for that one.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: I I did for most of the other ones that I would have issues with, but Iboragu, who is a huge fiendish Ultra god of death, which this is the first instance I've seen of Uldra anywhere in DD, and it made me very happy.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: Ultra, hold on.
- 21:14SPEAKER_03: Is that like Huldra?
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: It is related, yes.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, cool.
- 21:18SPEAKER_03: Okay, okay, cool.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: They are uh Arctic Faye creatures of Scandinavian folklore.
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: So I know those guys.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: Super cool.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: Love them.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: So he's the ultra god of death, murder, and ice magic after having stolen it from his half-sister, who he what?
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: He killed.
- 21:40SPEAKER_03: Of course he did.
- 21:42SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:43SPEAKER_03: I was just gonna say, I was gonna say eight.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: No, he just killed her.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: His ultimate goal is similar to Oral's to sheath the world in an endless ice age.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: The frostfell regions where both of their presences are known are known to be very dangerous.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: He has had an interesting backstory.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure he only appeared in the supplement Frostburn as he doesn't even have a wiki page on most of the DD setting wikis.
- 22:07SPEAKER_03: Damn.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: Frostburn, same with Uldras.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: I think that this is literally the only official supplement where they appear.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: I would love more.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: Wizards of the Coast, since you um listened to me when I said that I wanted Planescape in fifth edition, can you listen to me now and say that?
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: Um bring back Ultra and other related things.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: Bring back other related Scandinavian gods.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: Oral had a couple of notable histories with other gods.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: At some point, she had a bit of a relationship with Thrym, the giant god of cold and ice, and the leader of the frost giants.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: Thrym is chaotic evil, which is a personality type that Orl clearly is used to.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah, clearly at this point.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: Hey, at least this guy would get along with her friends.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: This relationship produced Nalkara the Empyrean.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: Nalkara is the neutral evil daughter of Oral and Trim.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: She looks like a strikingly beautiful frost giant with pale blue skin, cold blue eyes, and crackling blue flames for hair.
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: Okay, she sounds hot.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: Where'd the flames come from?
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: Don't worry about it.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: Thrym, the is she So actually, no, Thrym's twin brother is the frost or is the fire giant, so maybe Oh, okay, okay.
- 23:23SPEAKER_02: That's just a random gene that happened to me.
- 23:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was it's a recessive, it's a recessive gene.
- 23:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I see.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: When she is happy, everything around her seems bright and warm.
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: When she's unhappy, her surroundings become darker and colder.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: And Waterdeep, Dungeon of the Mad Mage, she comes to the age of comes to the aid of the titular Mad Mage when summoned by him due to a favor she owed him.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: Unfortunately, uh if you're a successful adventuring party, you will kill her.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Dang.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Because she got forced into like a like a pact type thing.
- 23:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:56SPEAKER_03: You have to like do the adventure or whatever.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, I guess if you have a cool like DM, maybe you can just talk her out of it and be like, hey, I'll get you out of this.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: Just don't fight me.
- 24:09SPEAKER_03: Even though you would have no, you would have like not necessarily any reason to do that in like a role-play sense for like most reasons.
- 24:17SPEAKER_03: Because she's hot.
- 24:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, and then and then the DM thinks back to the beginning of the session when someone in the party was like, Oh, she sounds hot.
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: Like, oh yeah, she's she's hot, so that makes sense.
- 24:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the the everyone's like favorite cousin of the of the like murder hobo is like the the bard who's trying to fk everything, you know?
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:39SPEAKER_03: I don't know why it's self-censored there.
- 24:42SPEAKER_03: This isn't actually a PG 13 movie.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: It is not.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: You don't have to censor.
- 24:47SPEAKER_03: Turns out.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Regardless.
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: Fuck! If you suck, then Nalkara kills you.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: At one point, long before 14th century uh DR, which is like where the majority of current DD takes place, Orl has a tryst with Gyaragos, who is the god of barbaric warfare, also known as the Reaver.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: I think we might have mentioned him as an alternate in No.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: I I was considering him in my list, and I never added him because I didn't think that it would go over well.
- 25:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, on account of the previous, we would have nixed him because of his an orals history, probably.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, so the pot product of that relationship was a demigod, Zixakal.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: Uh not that's not his name, that is his species.
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: I don't know what that is.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: It is what how do you pronounce that?
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: Zixakal.
- 25:38SPEAKER_02: Zixakal, okay.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the first X is uh pronounced as a Z.
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: It is X I X E C A L.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: It is essentially a giant ice elemental that is essentially a walking glacier.
- 25:53SPEAKER_03: It's a big frost Otranoch from Well, that's actually terrifying.
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's kind of freaky.
- 25:58SPEAKER_03: I don't like it.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they're huge.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: So this particular one is named Arctis the Walking Winter.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: That's cool.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: He was imprisoned inside the Ragged Gl Glacier, which is sort of the um big glacier for the great glacier setting.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like the principal.
- 26:14SPEAKER_02: You know what uh like image just popped into my mind?
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: The uh ice colossus from Hercules.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: Oh, kinda, yeah.
- 26:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I was thinking about Hercules a minute ago because of the the hair, the fire hair.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: While he was in prison inside this glacier, he grows more and more powerful and filled with this destructive rage over the course of centuries.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: Arctus was apparently abandoned by Oral and imprisoned in this glacier when Gyaragos lost his divinity to of like um no war broadly to Tempus.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: Because Tempest sort of became the war god, and so then Gyragos was only left with barbaric warfare.
- 26:58SPEAKER_03: She's just mad at she's mad at him, so she took it out on their kids.
- 27:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 27:03SPEAKER_03: Or they're I mean I guess they're one kid, but you know, she's mad at him, so she took it.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: So yeah, you take it out on the child one more.
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, obviously.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: Again, actually every once in a while you remember oral is evil.
- 27:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I guess.
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: And also, like, plenty of parents in the real world do that, so that makes sense, I guess.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: Oh god, yeah.
- 27:23SPEAKER_01: So he's been trapped in the glacier for a thousand years.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: So the events that this happens are for Neverwinter Nights, Doom of Ice of Doom of the Icewind Dale, and they involve him breaking free to bring Doom to all ice through the whole land.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: You know the drill.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: Um the hero of Neverwinter has to stop him.
- 27:43SPEAKER_03: Frozen three.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: The plot of Frozen Three.
- 27:48SPEAKER_02: That's a weird twist.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: I ain't gonna lie.
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: This this like DLC for Neverwinter Nights came out in 2025.
- 27:56SPEAKER_03: Wow, which is insane.
- 27:58SPEAKER_03: That's crazy.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: So I had not seen anything to do with it, and I couldn't find a plot summary anywhere.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: So I actually went through and watched somebody play through it to get the um sort of broad strokes on Arctis, which mind you, this is for two paragraphs in my notes that I spent probably two hours speeding through this.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: But I just wanted to give a shout out to uh Bronca 93 plays.
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: Your videos on Neverwinter Nights, Doom of Icewind Dale were so useful, so helpful, and uh you did a great job, and I enjoyed watching it.
- 28:38SPEAKER_03: Dude, honestly, hell yeah, that's really cool.
- 28:40SPEAKER_03: Honestly, people on YouTube with like uh a random number that seems to be like a year in their username that they usually don't have that many subscribers.
- 28:50SPEAKER_03: Usually their videos are no commentary, but they're like those are those are one of the backbones of our society.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: Her hers was commentary and also her reading, which I really appreciated that because Never Winter Nights does not have a a narration.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: Um it has its subtitles specifically, and so there were like a lot of areas where I would have no idea that Arctus was mentioned if not for the because I just searched through the transcript, if not for the fact that she was reading them aloud.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: Nice, but thank you, Bronca 93.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: You are amazing.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Bronca 93.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: Despite having had plenty of alliances with ice deities, Oral has opposed several other gods with portfolios in ice and cold simply because they had a portfolio in ice and cold, such as Relevar Dinivien, the snow elf god who acts as a ward against severe cold elves.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: Uh Sune was surprisingly very opposed to Oral.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: Like I know Sune is a good goddess, and that was the but specifically she is opposed to Oral because of the fact that Oral has a desire to freeze everything beautiful in time.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: And Sune is the goddess of beauty.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: And so she wants to see everything beautiful flourish.
- 30:06SPEAKER_02: I see, yeah.
- 30:07SPEAKER_02: She's like, um, excuse you, fuck you.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: So Uthgar of the Uthgard barbarian fame, despise her due to the waning worship of the elk tribe, if you'll remember back from the original.
- 30:20SPEAKER_03: She like stole their she like stole their totem god.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: No, that was Malar.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: No, she she sort of saved or shared them.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: It was Malar.
- 30:30SPEAKER_01: Probably the Elk doesn't have any issues, but Uthgar was like, what the fuck?
- 30:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: So admittedly, he hates her a lot less than he does Malar.
- 30:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he just doesn't like her.
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: So during the um aforementioned Grumsch debacle.
- 30:45SPEAKER_02: What?
- 30:45SPEAKER_02: Debacle?
- 30:46SPEAKER_02: There's no grumsch debacle.
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: Orl gained tremendous power and enemies by siphoning followers and power from the faiths of Talos, Lutyu, the sleeping god of glaciers, we discussed a long time ago during the Giants episode.
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: And Erdri Fainya, the elven goddess of the sky and Avarials, which are winged elves.
- 31:07SPEAKER_02: Dude, that is the most fucking elf name ever.
- 31:11SPEAKER_03: Travis, and I have one hand on the braids all the day because that was the exact thing I thought.
- 31:16SPEAKER_03: I was like, that's such a fucking elf name.
- 31:17SPEAKER_01: That is a very elf name.
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: In all that capacity, Orl incurred the wrath of not just those gods and their you know, followers and things like that.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: She incurred the wrath of a primordial, the queen of air named Akati.
- 31:31SPEAKER_02: Oh shit.
- 31:32SPEAKER_02: Good job.
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: Good job, Orl.
- 31:34SPEAKER_02: That's that's bad.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: Nothing really came of that, especially because as of 5th edition and the second sundering, she has been relegated back to just ice and snow and that sort of thing.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: But I do want to know on the aforementioned bullshit with the Queen of Air and Darkness.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: Where Oral is also Oralander, the Frost Sprite Queen and Ancient Archface seen as being synonymous with the Queen of Air and Darkness.
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the Umlao.
- 32:00SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: Luckily, fixed by fifth edition.
- 32:04SPEAKER_01: But the weirdness is interestingly resolved by Ed via Twitter.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: My favorite Ed via Twitter.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: The deeds of gods are often mysterious.
- 32:13SPEAKER_03: He typed mysteries, but maybe that doesn't that doesn't that doesn't not make sense.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: The deeds of gods are often mysteries to mortals, especially when overlaid by what priesthoods say, which is often propaganda, misdirection intended to make their deity seem important and vital.
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: In this case, I'd say this the Queen of Air and Darkness still claims to be Oral to retain worshippers on Toro.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: That is exactly what's happening.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: And Oral cooperates because it boosts her importance and therefore worship and therefore influence.
- 32:39SPEAKER_03: Oh, I see.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: Now the Queen of Air and Darkness and Oral have sort of a like unspoken pact on that in that regard.
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: And sort of, I guess, an alliance if you Yeah, like a little bit of like a Yeah.
- 32:56unknown: Yeah.
- 32:57SPEAKER_01: Like a mini alliance.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: We'll call it a mini alliance.
- 32:59SPEAKER_03: Like like a, you know, I'm letting you do this, you know, kind of because it benefits me in some capacity.
- 33:09SPEAKER_03: But you know, the fact that it also benefits you is is is immaterial to me.
- 33:13SPEAKER_03: But it doesn't bother me.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: It's like um it's like commensalism or whatever.
- 33:19SPEAKER_03: That kind of that kind of relationship in in nature, you know.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: So there are actually a few notable events featuring oral, but let's just start with a story.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: When the world was young, some arm of the great glacier scoured a path between two slightly higher stretches of land, and since that long ago time, the great the great forest have been unable to take root in the veil between.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: The Dalesfold tell other stories to explain the gap.
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: Some say a great dragon burned a path through one great forest, while others claim that Shonda Shondacool?
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: Shonda Cool, thank you, and Sylvanas had held a contest to determine whether wood or wind would rule this land, and that Earl of the Frost made an interview intervene to set winter over both.
- 34:02SPEAKER_02: God damn.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:04SPEAKER_02: She's like, uh, how about this?
- 34:06SPEAKER_02: I win.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: Uh this story is made to explain a long winds windswept gap between the two woods in the Great Dale region of Feyrun.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: Whether or not it's true or not, it doesn't really matter.
- 34:19SPEAKER_01: It's interesting and very oral.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: There's probably a dragon.
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: You just like dragons.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: In 1485 DR, which by the way is called the Year of the Iron Dwarfs Vengeance.
- 34:32SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: That's cool.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: Fucking amazing year name.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: Much better than Year of the Worm.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: No, I like Year of the Worm.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: Okay, fine.
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, that's fair.
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: I also like Year of the Worm.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: It was just the only one that I could remember off the top of the state.
- 34:45SPEAKER_03: It's not better than Year of the Breaching Boulet, though, which I forgot to mention in the last episode.
- 34:51SPEAKER_03: That there's a year of the city.
- 34:52SPEAKER_03: I think it was like 580, 580, 585 or something.
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: Anyway.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: A young outcast named Hedrun Arnsforth was accepted as Oral's Chosen and pledged to bring the people of Icewindale to the worship of the Frost Maiden.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: I will say, a good portion of Icewind Dale already worships the Frost Maiden, given that it's in Icewind Dale.
- 35:14SPEAKER_02: I mean, yeah, that kind of makes sense.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: It's like in the name.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: But regardless, she became known as the Ice Witch and visited her Fury upon.
- 35:25SPEAKER_03: I was gonna let it go.
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: She visited her fury upon the barbarian tribes and ten towns, which is a notable town or like town sort of multitude.
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: Collection of in Icewindale.
- 35:42SPEAKER_01: She intends to help Oral cast all of Icewindale into an eternal winter.
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: This is part of a supplement.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: If you're a good adventurer, you'll stop her.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: I just kind of assumed Icewindale was already internal winter, but hey.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: Well, we'll sort of get to that.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: Icewindale is sort of a polar region where like you'll probably get a little bit of like a uh a tundra spring if you if you or not tundra, more like taiga spring.
- 36:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: Uh so a little bit of like Yeah.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: Some ice will melt and you'll get some foliage.
- 36:21SPEAKER_03: Like it's not just like solid ice the whole year round.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that that's the Great Glacier region.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: But it is you're still gonna be like mostly like you're in the summer, there's gonna be snow.
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: It's just not gonna be packed ice.
- 36:36SPEAKER_02: Uh okay.
- 36:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: Um, Oral really seems to have it out for Icewindale, or maybe it's just a place where she has ultimate power, given it being surrounded by ice and snow.
- 36:47SPEAKER_01: After Umberly gets the rest of the gods of fury to go after Oral, she retreats to Icewindale.
- 36:52SPEAKER_03: Okay, so I mean, yeah.
- 36:54SPEAKER_03: I mean, it is called Icewindale.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: So this is where I sort of mentioned that Oral craved isolation, but then went to go live among mortals, and in my opinion, still wants to be adored.
- 37:07SPEAKER_01: She began a spell, which is where each night before midnight, Orl takes the sky on the back of a white rock ROC and weaves her spell.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: It comes down in the guise of like this shimmering aurora that illuminates the sky and fades before dawn.
- 37:24SPEAKER_01: This magic prevents the sun from rising above the horizon.
- 37:29SPEAKER_01: So at midday, you it's basically twilight.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's just like real life.
- 37:39unknown: Yeah.
- 37:39SPEAKER_03: I told you this is gonna be a good episode, guys.
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: My brain is firing on all cylinders.
- 37:44SPEAKER_03: Do you want to explain?
- 37:45SPEAKER_03: 100%.
- 37:46SPEAKER_03: Do you want to explain?
- 37:48SPEAKER_03: It's well, yeah, like in how in some in some regions, like close to the Arctic circle.
- 37:52SPEAKER_03: Like during the winter, yeah.
- 37:54SPEAKER_03: The sun doesn't rise.
- 37:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:56SPEAKER_01: Okay, that makes sense.
- 37:58SPEAKER_03: See, how come you guys didn't immediately know what I was talking about when I just said it's like real life?
- 38:03SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 38:05SPEAKER_02: It was so clear.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was very obviously so clear.
- 38:09SPEAKER_03: Obviously, I'm talking about the the the uh that whatever that phenomenon is.
- 38:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: Is that the I mean, because like that is like the opposite of midnight sun, so I would assume it would be called midday moon, but as soon as I said it, it sounded stupid, so I don't know.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: Anyways, either way, Ice When Dale is trapped in an eternal winter that they call the everlasting rhyme because there's no sunlight or warmth to melt the ice, they never experience summer for this whole period of time.
- 38:39SPEAKER_02: Damn.
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: That would suck.
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: Kind of.
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: This summer I could do without.
- 38:45SPEAKER_03: Oh wait, I think it's the opposite that the sun doesn't set.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: That that's during the summer.
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: During the winter, the sun doesn't rise very much.
- 38:54SPEAKER_03: Okay, it might be yeah, okay.
- 38:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:59SPEAKER_01: During the winter, the sun the yes, you were correct.
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: You were just thinking of the wrong thing thing.
- 39:05unknown: Yeah.
- 39:07SPEAKER_03: Y'all know what I mean when I said just like real life.
- 39:10SPEAKER_03: I figured it out now.
- 39:12SPEAKER_03: Everyone was immediately on the same brainwave as well.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: I do like that you started to try and convince yourself that you were wrong, though.
- 39:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: Even though, like, it it is a yeah.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: Um so basically, this this has lasted for two whole years where Icewindale is trapped in essentially a different reality because the rest of the world is like it's normal.
- 39:34SPEAKER_01: The sun is still rising and setting as normal.
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: It's sort of like this like a bubble.
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:41SPEAKER_03: Magic in D is weird sometimes, or like a or like a like a snow globe, maybe.
- 39:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:47SPEAKER_02: It is it is weird sometimes.
- 39:50SPEAKER_02: That is true.
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: There's some other fun bits in the supplement, including a lost city of Netherell buried under the glacier, a frozen necropolis, and in general, it's just a very good story where you get to do a lot of exploring in a very small region that is like jam-packed with like uh an interweaving thing.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: Like it it just it feels very connected, I think, is m mostly what I'm getting at.
- 40:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 40:16SPEAKER_02: Uh what second name was this again?
- 40:18SPEAKER_01: This is from I think it's called Icewind Dale Rhyme of the Frost Maiden.
- 40:22SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 40:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, that would make sense.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: So for most of her iterations, Oral is simply portrayed as a beautiful blue-skinned woman dressed in white.
- 40:31SPEAKER_01: Like I mentioned, there was not that much thought placed into what Orl would look like.
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it is unfortunate.
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: She had a very it is a very good picture.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: The picture is like almost sort of like an ice icy, like a fae made of ice.
- 40:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I like that she's swinging what basically just looks like a longer version of a pickaxe.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: It kind of does.
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: It might be an ice pickaxe.
- 40:59SPEAKER_02: It might be a Warhammer, just like ice pickaxe.
- 41:02SPEAKER_02: Or ice pickaxe, yeah.
- 41:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I could definitely see her using an ice pickaxe.
- 41:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: It's clear that they had sort of just like a default character in mind for Oral, or at the very least, that is the vibe that they give off.
- 41:17SPEAKER_01: I don't know what they were thinking, but it that that one is, I think, from third edition.
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: So even then, it takes a while to get a picture of Oral.
- 41:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they were kind of just like, okay, you know what a hot woman looks like.
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: Now make her blue.
- 41:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 41:33SPEAKER_03: What if we took woman and just turned her blue?
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:36SPEAKER_03: You know?
- 41:37SPEAKER_03: It's like, ooh, blue skin, long white hair, groundbreaking.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: They didn't even get to that part yet.
- 41:44SPEAKER_03: It's like, you know, uh blue and white for cold winter character, groundbreaking.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: Well, they didn't even get as far as her her hair, they didn't describe her hair at all.
- 41:55SPEAKER_01: It's just that she has she has blue skin and is dressed in white.
- 42:00SPEAKER_03: Groundbreaking.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: Um, eventually, this does get expanded on a couple more times.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: So I think around third edition, Oral appears most often in one of two avatar forms, the Frostmaiden or Iced Dawn.
- 42:13SPEAKER_01: Frostmaiden is a lithe, furious woman with blue skin, long, free-flowing white hair, and a fine gown of white.
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: I I don't I don't know what white lawn is, to be perfectly honest.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: That may have been a mind bad in typing.
- 42:28SPEAKER_02: White lawn thickly furred with Don't don't worry about it.
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: Uh I I typed this at I I finished typing this section up at midnight last night.
- 42:38SPEAKER_01: Just saying.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: So a fine gown of white, thickly furred with frost swirls around her.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: Ice Dawn is a silent, gliding apparition of cold or of ice, and is an impassive figure with an ornate crown and hooked spurred armor of opaque light blue ice.
- 43:00SPEAKER_02: It was supposed to be thickly furred gown.
- 43:03SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 43:04SPEAKER_02: I was like, hold on, let me actually.
- 43:05SPEAKER_03: No, I I also started to look it up because I could not extrapolate what I'm saying.
- 43:10SPEAKER_01: All right, there's no need to peer into my into my spelling malfunctions and figure out what they actually were supposed to say.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: No, I'm sorry.
- 43:20SPEAKER_01: No, it's uh it's okay.
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: It's okay.
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: I tease.
- 43:22SPEAKER_01: So the latest iteration of her avatars is from Rima the Frostmaiden.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: There are three versions of her avatars in this one.
- 43:31SPEAKER_01: So in her first form, she appears as a hunch, seven-foot tall biped with the head of a snowy owl, black talons, cloven hooves, and grayish white wolf fur covering her body from neck to uh neck to down, which I kept that part in because just cause I like the the way it sort of flowed neck to down.
- 43:52SPEAKER_02: Neck to down.
- 43:54SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah, that that that's pretty cool though.
- 43:58SPEAKER_01: Yo, still hopefully look at that.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's so cool.
- 44:02SPEAKER_01: Protruding from her feathery how owl's head is a pair of curved goat horns.
- 44:07SPEAKER_03: That's so cool.
- 44:07SPEAKER_03: She's like a combination of all of the Arctic the Arctic specific animals, yeah.
- 44:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's so cool.
- 44:15SPEAKER_01: A cloak and cow made of pristine white snow conceals much of her form, which her fur her worshippers refer to as the cold crone.
- 44:24SPEAKER_03: Oh, is this three, three?
- 44:26SPEAKER_03: Is this gonna be a oh there are three?
- 44:30SPEAKER_03: Three of them.
- 44:31SPEAKER_01: Three of them.
- 44:32SPEAKER_03: Dude, the brain cell, the brain cell activation.
- 44:37SPEAKER_03: When I heard the word crone, and then I knew there were three the brain cell activation.
- 44:42SPEAKER_01: It's not actually like mother making crone.
- 44:45SPEAKER_01: But so we're not gonna get mother.
- 44:48SPEAKER_03: No, this is mother.
- 44:52SPEAKER_03: Sorry.
- 44:53SPEAKER_02: I think you mean this is mommy.
- 44:55SPEAKER_03: Hey, you said it, not me.
- 44:57SPEAKER_01: Uh no, the next one is mommy.
- 44:59SPEAKER_01: Oh's second form, known to her worshippers as Lady Ice Kiss or the Brittle Maiden.
- 45:05SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: Is that of a ten-foot-tall woman of fearsome aspect made entirely of ice and frost?
- 45:13SPEAKER_01: Her eyes burn with a cold blue light, and a thin cloak of mist forms around her.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: Blades of ice grow out of her body at odd angles, breaking off before they get too long.
- 45:25SPEAKER_01: When she moves, her body crackles.
- 45:28SPEAKER_02: Jesus Christ.
- 45:29SPEAKER_02: Okay, I mean, yeah, I mean, wood.
- 45:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:33SPEAKER_01: Lady Ice Kiss or the Brittle Maiden is this one.
- 45:36SPEAKER_02: Lady Ice Kiss or the Brittle Maiden.
- 45:38SPEAKER_02: I like Lady Iceciss better, I think.
- 45:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but this the maiden does add, like, hearken back to Mother Maiden Crone, except again, no mother.
- 45:47SPEAKER_01: And then the last one, a third form called Winter's Womb or the Queen of Frozen Tears.
- 45:53SPEAKER_03: Wait, wait, wait.
- 45:54SPEAKER_03: That's very mother, actually.
- 45:56SPEAKER_03: Because womb, you know.
- 45:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I think in this also don't like it, but yeah, she is like the being inside the womb, or maybe she is the womb.
- 46:07SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure.
- 46:08SPEAKER_03: I mean, Porca and all those those, you know.
- 46:10SPEAKER_01: Fair.
- 46:11SPEAKER_01: The Queen of Frozen Tears is also a name for it.
- 46:16SPEAKER_03: See, that one that one is better.
- 46:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I just don't like the word womb.
- 46:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 46:21SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't know what it is about it.
- 46:23SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't know.
- 46:24SPEAKER_01: It's a three-foot diameter ice diamond containing the gods divine spark.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: So I think that she is inside the womb.
- 46:31SPEAKER_03: I I don't know.
- 46:32SPEAKER_03: It does that's that's still pretty mother to me.
- 46:36SPEAKER_03: You know, because it's like, I don't know.
- 46:38SPEAKER_03: That's fair.
- 46:38SPEAKER_02: Honestly, that's what I'm gathering, is that she is like inside the womb.
- 46:42SPEAKER_03: But I could see it being a part of her too.
- 46:45SPEAKER_03: I mean, I do I do also think that like I would I would gather that that was probably meant kind of their design inspiration for these three forms, given the names of the other two.
- 46:55SPEAKER_03: So I feel like even if this one is a little bit more it's a little more cerebral.
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think it's gonna see that.
- 47:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 47:02SPEAKER_01: Either way, there was still plenty of inspiration, clearly.
- 47:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 47:06SPEAKER_01: So the diamond has facets and a sharp point at the bottom, it hovers in the air, radiating intense cold.
- 47:12SPEAKER_01: And when Orl speaks, her voice seems to emanate from the heart.
- 47:15SPEAKER_01: That's cool.
- 47:17SPEAKER_01: Otherwise, Oral manifests as icy breath accompanied by a cold, ruthless chuckling and a wide-eyed radiance that leaves a thin line of frost to mark its passage.
- 47:27SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: She also appears as a blank-eyed face of frost with long, wind-wipped white hair that radiates intense cold.
- 47:36SPEAKER_01: Oral uses this latter manifestation if she wants to speak, slay, or confer items of power upon worshippers.
- 47:42SPEAKER_03: She's slaying, all right.
- 47:44SPEAKER_01: With a life-chilling kiss.
- 47:46SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 47:47SPEAKER_01: And she also confers boons by breathing them out of her of that face's mouth.
- 47:52SPEAKER_01: Um, her victims must make a successful saving throw versus death magic to kiss.
- 47:58SPEAKER_01: That's really funny.
- 47:59SPEAKER_03: She decides to give you a boon, but then you just fucking die.
- 48:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:03SPEAKER_03: Just grain.
- 48:04SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 48:05SPEAKER_02: Just here's your boon, death.
- 48:07SPEAKER_01: Her colors are obviously ice, white, and blue.
- 48:10SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you've gathered that yet.
- 48:12SPEAKER_01: But her monsters are water elementals, ice elementals, undead, which is kind of interesting.
- 48:18SPEAKER_01: Hmm, winter wolves, and frost giants.
- 48:21SPEAKER_02: I wonder why the undead.
- 48:24SPEAKER_03: I I don't know.
- 48:25SPEAKER_03: Something about no, something, I don't know.
- 48:28SPEAKER_03: There's something there.
- 48:29SPEAKER_03: There's something there.
- 48:30SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't know.
- 48:31SPEAKER_03: Regardless of that.
- 48:32SPEAKER_03: You know, I I do I do wonder because I feel like this isn't like I feel like that's a thing in some media and things, like a sort of a link to maybe it's because like the cold preserves things in a way.
- 48:48SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 48:49SPEAKER_03: Because I'm thinking like, because you got like the White Walkers and like Game of Thrones and like other stuff.
- 48:59SPEAKER_03: Other things, other stuff.
- 49:01SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't know.
- 49:02SPEAKER_03: I feel like, well, okay, because I'm thinking of a couple specific things, but they're all from Final Fantasy XIV.
- 49:10SPEAKER_03: Um, but like, I don't know.
- 49:12SPEAKER_03: I feel like there's a like there's maybe something about like the cold, like preserving bodies in a certain type of way or whatever.
- 49:19SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 49:20SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 49:20SPEAKER_03: Or maybe it's just because she's evil, so they're kind of like, whatever.
- 49:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 49:24SPEAKER_03: You're an evil god, you can have some undead.
- 49:26SPEAKER_03: You know, they're just they just pass them around like peanuts.
- 49:30SPEAKER_01: Everyone can have a little bit of undead.
- 49:31SPEAKER_03: Peanuts on an airplane, you know, like here, you can have some.
- 49:33SPEAKER_01: So we're gonna get into the type of people who worship oral and simps.
- 49:40SPEAKER_01: That is some of them, yeah.
- 49:42SPEAKER_01: And all of that.
- 49:44SPEAKER_01: However, first we're gonna take our quick ad break.
- 49:47SPEAKER_02: All right, well, we'll be back then.
- 49:53SPEAKER_01: Hey everybody, thank you guys so much for listening to our episode on Oral.
- 49:57SPEAKER_01: This is the third installment in our Gods of Fury episode.
- 50:00SPEAKER_01: We have two more after this, so we'll be finished with this in about six weeks.
- 50:05SPEAKER_03: Hey, done with these with these fuckers, these assholes.
- 50:10SPEAKER_01: It's kind of weird to think about it like that, but it actually will be six weeks because in three weeks I will do Malar, and then in three more weeks after that, I'll do Emberly.
- 50:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and then the Secret Fifth One.
- 50:21SPEAKER_01: Oh my no.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: The secret fifth one dying to do research on something else now.
- 50:26SPEAKER_03: The secret fifth one, Telona.
- 50:30SPEAKER_01: But thank you guys so much for listening.
- 50:32SPEAKER_01: Um, we do have our affiliate partnership with FanRill Dice, where you can use offer code Dungeon Pedia for 10% off your entire order at fanrolleddice.com.
- 50:40SPEAKER_01: They are getting some spooky dice in.
- 50:43SPEAKER_01: We also recently learned that they had silicone dice, so now I want some to throw at my husband when he does a bad roll.
- 50:53SPEAKER_02: And uh Loon, you're not allowed to have silicone dice.
- 50:57SPEAKER_02: Because you will eat them.
- 50:59SPEAKER_03: What if I already did?
- 51:00SPEAKER_03: Oh no.
- 51:01SPEAKER_02: Well, that would make sense.
- 51:03SPEAKER_03: Um speaking of, I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow.
- 51:07SPEAKER_03: I'm kidding.
- 51:08SPEAKER_03: I didn't eat the dice.
- 51:09SPEAKER_03: Don't eat dice.
- 51:11SPEAKER_03: That's not good for it.
- 51:12SPEAKER_03: Do as I say, not as I do.
- 51:15SPEAKER_01: However, uh, we have our Patreon if you are interested in supporting us directly, which is at Dungeonpedia.
- 51:22SPEAKER_01: And we are getting ready to upload this month's mini sode.
- 51:26SPEAKER_01: I want to say in the next week or so it should be up.
- 51:29SPEAKER_01: Uh depends on how long it takes me to finish editing, because sometimes I get distracted with my ideas.
- 51:37SPEAKER_03: And sometimes ADHD watch a two-hour playthrough of a Neverwinter Nights.
- 51:43SPEAKER_01: Oh, it it's it's it's nine hours, and I fast forward I I watched it on high speed.
- 51:49SPEAKER_03: I don't know where I got two hours from.
- 51:50SPEAKER_01: Because I said that I spent two hours doing it.
- 51:53SPEAKER_01: Oh, oh, I remembered something.
- 51:55SPEAKER_01: Good job.
- 51:56SPEAKER_01: With that, uh, we are obviously working on some additional like offerings for you guys on Patreon, especially for some of the lower tiers, because I I even though I want, you know, I just want everyone to feel like they get something out of yeah, because I don't want you guys to just like be like, oh, well, I'm doing this just because you asked.
- 52:17SPEAKER_01: I want it to feel like you get what you're giving.
- 52:20unknown: Yeah.
- 52:20SPEAKER_02: Uh, we do also have our Dungeonpedia Discord.
- 52:24SPEAKER_02: The link to that is on our Twitch page and our other various social media platforms that you can and should follow us on.
- 52:33SPEAKER_02: We have threads and Instagram and TikTok.
- 52:38SPEAKER_02: LinkedIn.
- 52:39SPEAKER_02: We don't have a LinkedIn.
- 52:40SPEAKER_02: We don't have a LinkedIn.
- 52:40SPEAKER_02: We do not have a LinkedIn.
- 52:41SPEAKER_01: We do have a substack, but we haven't used it.
- 52:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh, haven't used that yet.
- 52:47SPEAKER_02: But those are all just at Dungeonpedia.
- 52:49SPEAKER_02: That's also what they call a church of orals of Substack.
- 52:53SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 52:54SPEAKER_01: That was really good though.
- 52:57SPEAKER_03: Sorry.
- 52:58SPEAKER_03: I should use that as a transition to go back to the episode.
- 53:00SPEAKER_03: Damn.
- 53:02SPEAKER_02: You can also email us at dungeonpedia.podcast at gmail.com if you have any episode suggestions, questions, suggestions for Patreon, all that fun stuff.
- 53:13SPEAKER_01: Concerns about the level of interest we have in oral.
- 53:17SPEAKER_03: Concerned about us following in into a cult of an evil ice goddess.
- 53:22SPEAKER_01: Oh no, what a disaster.
- 53:25SPEAKER_03: Oh no, how terrible.
- 53:27SPEAKER_03: We could talk about oral and I got thirsty.
- 53:29SPEAKER_03: Sorry.
- 53:30SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 53:32SPEAKER_03: You can also subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts to get notifications uh whenever we upload new episodes.
- 53:40SPEAKER_03: And uh on those platforms, uh leave us a rating, a review, tell your friends, tell your family.
- 53:46SPEAKER_01: Tell your friends who might be indoctrinated into a cult of the cult of an evil eyes goddess, yeah.
- 53:53SPEAKER_01: Tell your friends who really like Elsa but want the grown-up version.
- 53:57SPEAKER_03: Oh no.
- 53:59SPEAKER_02: Jesus no.
- 54:01SPEAKER_02: And as always, a big thank you to Alexander Nakarata for our theme song, Blacksmith.
- 54:06SPEAKER_03: And with that, let's get back to Frozen Four now.
- 54:11SPEAKER_03: We're on the fourth movie.
- 54:13SPEAKER_01: Jesus Christ.
- 54:15SPEAKER_01: So, as I mentioned previously, I think in the first Gods of Fury episode, a lot of worshippers of Oral come from two main regions, the Great Glacier and the Savage Frontier.
- 54:26SPEAKER_01: These are also the names of source books for adventures taking place in their namesakes for their time.
- 54:32SPEAKER_01: They're both actually really well made and very respectful of the fact that they do take a lot of inspiration from inuit culture and actually do specifically name that that is where they are taking their inspiration from.
- 54:45SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's cool.
- 54:46SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 54:47SPEAKER_01: So just wanted to shout out uh the Great Glacier and the Savage Frontier for being pretty good supplements.
- 54:53SPEAKER_01: The Northmen see Oral as the bringer of winter on the world and an important part of their existence.
- 54:58SPEAKER_01: They placate her with offerings of food and strong drink in autumn and winter placed upon rafts set adrift at sea.
- 55:05SPEAKER_01: In times of dire distress, human sacrifices may be placed on the raft.
- 55:10SPEAKER_03: No good.
- 55:10SPEAKER_01: Such sacrifices are usually taken from prisoners of or slaves, but not always.
- 55:14SPEAKER_03: We will get into some of the more dire times where it is Ah Yeah, the good old, the good old, the good old virgin in a volcano.
- 55:24SPEAKER_03: Except Except it's not that.
- 55:27SPEAKER_03: Except it's not that, and also definitely not a volcano.
- 55:30SPEAKER_01: This is actually a good place.
- 55:31SPEAKER_01: Let me just hop down to things that you might sacrifice to oral.
- 55:37SPEAKER_01: The sacrificial options.
- 55:38SPEAKER_03: Oh, I see the tab that says sacrificial options.
- 55:43SPEAKER_01: Um, humanoid.
- 55:44SPEAKER_01: Uh humanoid sacrifices during times of great need may come from lottery, popular vote, or simply bad luck.
- 55:53SPEAKER_02: How how bad would you feel if you were the one being sacrificed by popular vote?
- 55:58SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, no kidding.
- 56:00SPEAKER_02: Like, y'all really hate me that much.
- 56:03SPEAKER_01: Admittedly, popular vote can be a double-edged sword because if things are only kind of so bad that you don't want to use like a prisoner, you if you're unpopular with enough people, you will win by popular vote.
- 56:16SPEAKER_01: However, if things are so dire, you might vote for the most beloved person or the most useful person in town because of the fact that uh oh, so it could be a balance, it could be a balance of like to appease her.
- 56:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, who do you think is gonna be the best sacrifice versus maybe who's a person that we maybe really don't want to sacrifice versus who's a person we do want to sacrifice because we fucking hate them?
- 56:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 56:44SPEAKER_01: Bad luck is simply just wrong place, wrong time.
- 56:47SPEAKER_01: It's you're a lone traveler and you stumble on a village that is being horribly afflicted by oral.
- 56:55SPEAKER_01: And guess what?
- 56:56SPEAKER_01: You're an outsider, and it's not bad enough that they're having to sacrifice their leader.
- 57:02SPEAKER_03: So And now this is this is um the this is a new uh Ariaster horror film.
- 57:10unknown: Yeah.
- 57:11SPEAKER_02: On the raft you go.
- 57:13SPEAKER_01: So food is often sacrificed to oral, um, especially for smaller towns that don't have enough people to potentially sacrifice some of them.
- 57:23SPEAKER_01: They will give up their food instead.
- 57:25SPEAKER_01: A day's catch of trout is strung up on wooden racks a mile outside of town to be claimed by Yeti or other creatures that embody oral.
- 57:33SPEAKER_02: I would like to say you skipped the most important part there, which was uh knucklehead trout.
- 57:39SPEAKER_01: Oh, I'm sorry.
- 57:39SPEAKER_01: You're right.
- 57:40SPEAKER_03: Specifically, specifically knuckle knucklehead trout.
- 57:44SPEAKER_03: Knucklehead trout.
- 57:45SPEAKER_03: That's not a kind of trout, it's just trout that are fucking stupid and they're just little knuckleheads.
- 57:50SPEAKER_02: They're just little knuckleheads.
- 57:54SPEAKER_01: Um one one sacrifice that everyone can always make to Oral is their warmth.
- 57:59SPEAKER_01: Towns that cannot bring themselves to part with people or food forsake their warmth for a night.
- 58:05SPEAKER_01: No fires are lit between dusk and dawn, forcing locals to share body heat for warmth.
- 58:10SPEAKER_01: Anyone who dares to light a fire is savagely beaten.
- 58:13SPEAKER_02: And then probably sacrificed to probably sacrifice.
- 58:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and then they're like, alright, guys, if we need another sacrifice, we got this fucking guy.
- 58:20SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 58:20SPEAKER_03: So those guy that'd be me.
- 58:23SPEAKER_01: This fucking guy.
- 58:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, those are the um more common sacrifices to Oral.
- 58:30SPEAKER_03: Um, because you can't always afford a person very easily.
- 58:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, whereas I would say probably Umberly received a lot more human sacrifices or humanoid sacrifices.
- 58:39SPEAKER_01: Oral is definitely more into the toying part, so uh sacrificing your warmth might actually appease her pretty well, especially because then she'll watch you shiver all night.
- 58:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and then also it's like if you do too many human sacrifices, eventually there won't be any humans to worship or to worship her, you know.
- 58:59SPEAKER_03: And as we've discussed, she might have some problems with with needing outside validation, you know.
- 59:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, she really needs to she really needs to look inward, you know.
- 59:08SPEAKER_01: Uh, I don't know if we're gonna psychoanalyze or much more, but who knows?
- 59:12SPEAKER_01: In the north, there is a complex to the worship of Oral.
- 59:16SPEAKER_01: It's a temple called the Winter Palace.
- 59:18SPEAKER_03: No, that's something else.
- 59:20SPEAKER_03: No, that's something that's something from Dragon Age.
- 59:24SPEAKER_01: Uh the rituals of worship to this deity are often cruel at the Winter Palace.
- 59:29SPEAKER_01: Visitors gather to watch the wet parades.
- 59:32SPEAKER_02: Oh, I could already like just hearing that.
- 59:34SPEAKER_02: I'm like, that I know what's about to happen.
- 59:36SPEAKER_01: It is a ritual where supplicants don garments packed with ice.
- 59:40SPEAKER_01: They journey between six white pillars known as the Kisses of Oral.
- 59:44SPEAKER_01: These columns are spread widely throughout the reach.
- 59:47SPEAKER_01: The worshippers move from pillar to pillar, chanting prayers to the goddess before returning to the temple.
- 59:52SPEAKER_01: In winter, the procession resembles frantic foot races with the added risk of exposure or or heart chill, which I think is just frostbite and D.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_01: The parade runners are cheered on by patrons who come out of nearby taverns to place bets on the stamina of the participants.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_01: Jesus Christ.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_01: I always making an educated guess on heart chill being just frostbite and DD, because literally verbatim, this exact quote is used in another supplement and it says frostbite instead of exposure or heart chill.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_02: Okay, so heart chill is just frostbite.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_02: The wet parade.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_02: The wet parades.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_01: The wet parades.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_03: So even though if it's if it's cold enough, it's not gonna get wet because the ice is just not it's not gonna melt.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_01: It will melt from your body heat.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I get it.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_01: I just up until the point where you start getting frostbite.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_03: Heart Joe.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_02: Then you just won't feel it and it won't matter.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_03: And soon enough you won't feel anything.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_01: Yay! Yay! So the Iolucians of the North, which are a particular tribe of people, I believe this is the one that is descended from the Netherese refugees that took to the north.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_01: They have no formal religion.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_01: However, a few priests exist amongst the Ielutians, including believers in Chantea, Ilmater, and Oral.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_01: And Chantea, Ilmater, and Oral are called their own names in their language, which are Palaruk for Chantea, Ayaruk for Ilmater, and Sakuruk for Oral.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_03: Hmm.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_03: And that sounds like it.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_03: And that sounds like gods that would not really get along with Oro.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_03: Uh no, but at least not Shantea.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_03: I don't actually know that much about Ilmatur.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_01: Uh no, he's the the um the martyr god.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_02: That proves how much or how little I know about Ilmatur, because I always thought that Elmater was a she.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_01: Nope.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_01: He's uh the crying god.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_01: You go to his temple is the one on the outside of Baldur's Gate, like just outside.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_02: Oh okay.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_02: Well shit.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_01: They're sort of seen as eccentrics, but like worship of all three is sort of like expected to some degree, or at the very least, appeasement and like sort of like just like regular sacrifices, you know.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that the well, I don't think that Shantea wants you to sacrifice to her.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_03: Not people, at least.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_01: Definitely not people, probably not beasts either, because she loves to protect the beasts.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_03: I said sacrifices, I more so meant kind of offerings in general.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_01: Offerings, very much.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_03: That's that's that's what I actually meant.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_03: I used the wrong word because I was still thinking about human sacrifice, offerings and like the occasional prayer.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_01: So the Great Glacier.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_01: This is where Oral like is at her max power.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, this is her, this is her sp her, you know, her spot.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_01: The Great Glacier was originally formed from the ice necklace of the deity Elutiu.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_01: It it it's an episode and a half.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_01: We've already sort of discussed part of it in the giant episode.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_01: Basically, that guy is inside the Great Glacier and sleeping.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_01: Summarized.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's he's chilling, you could say.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_03: He's just chilling.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_01: It is yeah, sorry.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_01: See, I started to say that he's actually straight up sleeping.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_03: I started to say that, not even as a as a as a joke, and then I was like, oh yeah, whatever.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I already said it, I might as well lean into it.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_01: The vast majority of people who live here are the Aleutians.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_01: Few Southerners have ever interacted with them, and it's usually the most like hardy of adventurers that do.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_01: There are white dragons, remranzes, and even ice devils.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_01: Oh, good.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, cool.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_04: Love ice devils.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_01: Well beloved and appeased in the Great Glacier.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_01: In fact, at the uh northern end of the Sword Coast, beyond the spine of the world, is Icewind Dale.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_01: It is near the heart of the Great Glacier and like backed up against the sea.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_01: So it's exactly what you're picturing icy polar tundra.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_01: And oral priests are found in multitudes here.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_02: They're just everywhere.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because you're going to want to appease Oral if you live in ice.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_03: I mean, and maybe also, maybe also Umberly, because you're right up against the sea.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's true.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_01: It does say few truly favor oral, but I would say that that does not go so far as like with the other gods of fury.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_01: Those who make their livelihood from winter and those who truly love winter do genuinely adore her.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_01: Worshippers stock food, fuel, and other sources of comfort and warmth, which they will either use for the winter or sacrifice to Oral for deliverance from harsh winters.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_02: I mean, okay, yeah.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_02: Makes sense.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_01: People will often attempt to placate her with their own individualized offerings or prayers, but like for something big, you're gonna want the entire town involved.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_01: But keep in mind that most of these are smaller communities, so that's yeah, like a like a true little like villa.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_02: Getting the entire town involved is not very difficult.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_01: Aurelian priests tend to be people who would, but for their status, be outcasts from their communities, whereas in the communities that they live in, they are somewhat of a um centerpiece, I would say, maybe like just a couple of steps below the leader of said communities.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_01: They avoid personal relationships, remaining aloof when not serving in their social capacity.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_01: I will say that this in other iterations is lessened.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_01: There are two essential versions of this.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_01: I do like both, so I'm going to discuss both.
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_01: Whereas normally I would have just stick stuck with the one that is like most common.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_03: Or most recent or
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_01: Her priests will warn local residents to prepare for winter and stock extra provisions so that they have offerings for Oral.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_01: Which does seem interesting that they come from this place of like warning, because her rituals are often seen as being cruel, but like the actual actions of the clergy are very seemingly altruistic.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_01: Obviously, to some degree, they just want additional worship for Oral.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_02: But but I mean, still in the process, they are like saving people.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think that Oral would still take a dead body, no matter what.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_01: And so it it is still interesting.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_03: I don't know exactly how to phrase what I'm thinking, but yeah, like it it's it's interesting in the way where I think that you know, for for some other gods, like you know, their their kind of sphere or like their portfolio is sort of seen as something that should be imposed, like unimpeded on everyone.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, like talos worshippers, I think.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, have a like talos first sort of mentality.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and in in in the sense where like their holstees is is just that they're just gonna go do destruction, you know?
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_03: Uh that's not really a good example.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_03: But like, you know, whereas like but but for a lot of gods, either the gods themselves or their worshipers do very much kind of act like their whole thing should just be that's what should like quote unquote win at the end of the day, you know.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_03: So you could see, I could see a universe where there is a god of winter who like does not want people to survive, you know.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_01: Interestingly, worshippers of Oral in Zentil Keep specifically will only be seen during the winter months or like in preparation for the winter months.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_01: I guess not only, but are seldom seen outside that time.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_03: Reverse hibernation.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_01: Their apparent purpose in the city is to recruit followers to Oral from among the homeless of the keep and refugees.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_01: Many of them would otherwise perish during the harsh weeks of winter, and they find salvation and life under the wing of the Aurelians instead of a frozen death in some back alley.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_01: So I I do find that interesting.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_01: Again, I don't think it's altruist, it's obviously not altruistic, but it is interesting that Oral herself is like, no, I would prefer that they don't freeze to death, they would be more useful to serve me.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:08:38SPEAKER_02: Alive and serving is better than dead for sure.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_02: You don't get power when they're dead.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_02: You gotta leave at least some of them, you know.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_01: Priests of Oral are scattered throughout the north, and but can occasionally be found as far south as the Heartlands, which is sort of like where a good bulk of like Feyunian properties take place.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_01: Uh they're easily identifiable through the dire warnings they proclaimed of the wrath of winter.
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_01: They are referred to by ty titles of Ice Priest and Ice Priestess.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_01: However, they prefer to use only the honorifics hand of Oral or Ice Breath.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_01: However, in temples yeah, this is complex.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_01: Uh the clergy use formal titles in ascending order.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_01: These are postulant, ice wind, storm sister, storm brother.
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_01: Talos is pissed.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_01: Lord or lady cold, lord or lady deep winter, lord or lady cold circle, and high hand of ice.
- 1:09:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's a little much.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_02: That's that's too complicated.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_02: What the fuck?
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_02: Like, stop it.
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_01: So postulants, which are just people who want to join the clergy.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_01: They're instructed in the ways of the goddess and must undergo the most sacred of rituals to gain admittance to the clergy, the embracing.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_01: This personal ritual may occur at any time of year, but if it's in the summer, the postulant must join into the Arctic or a high mountain region in order to find a blizzard.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_01: The embracing consists of running through a blizzard all night long dressed in only boots, though they may be thigh-high, a thin shift, and body paint depicting symbols sacred to Oral.
- 1:10:14SPEAKER_01: Celebrants either perish or are accepted by the goddess by being rescued from the pain and shivering by her embrace.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_02: What the fuck?
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_02: Oh man.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 1:10:25SPEAKER_01: Upon being embraced by the goddess, clerics of oral become immune to natural cold damage and the effects of exposure.
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_03: I bet many people don't get that far.
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_01: Uh, probably not.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_01: Jesus Christ.
- 1:10:38SPEAKER_03: It is certainly not.
- 1:10:39SPEAKER_03: It is like 90-something degrees outside, and I feel I feel cold.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_03: Like I feel cold right now, just thinking about that.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_01: Because of their immunity to natural cold, priestesses of oral are often seen scampering through the snows in summerweight clothing or bathing in frigid river waters in the depths of winter with no effect.
- 1:11:01SPEAKER_01: They need much less food than other beings because of this ability and roam the Northlands energetically.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_01: They've actually gotten somewhat of a uh reputation and can make a living or just earn goodwill through acts of delivering medicine messages and supplies during the winter.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_01: So, the Creed of Oral.
- 1:11:19SPEAKER_01: I know that you guys really enjoyed this one uh on our Talos episode.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_02: I love creeds.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_02: Yep, yep, yep.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_01: Make all Fairun embrace the cold and work to chill the realms by means of weather magic to hasten the rightful and inevitable icing of all.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_01: I hate that.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_01: I hate that.
- 1:11:35SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_01: It it keeps me out of it, icing of all.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we're icing a cake.
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_01: Willingly adapt yourself in society to increasingly colder conditions as ice, snow, and frigid winds spread to cover the entire world.
- 1:11:50SPEAKER_01: Everyone should shiver from cold, not fear, at least once a day.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_01: I and the the the whole like at least once a day is I'm being very critical now.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna critique each and every one of these.
- 1:12:05SPEAKER_01: Take the cold cleansing pair, beseech Earl's mil mercy, blah blah blah blah blah.
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_01: So I will read all of the dogma.
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_01: Cover all the lands with ice, quench fire wherever it's found, let in the winds and the cold, cut down windbreaks and chop holes in walls and roofs, that my breath may come and work darkness to hide the cursed sun, so that the chill the oral brings may slay.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_01: Take the life of an arctic creature only in great need, but slay all others that will.
- 1:12:41SPEAKER_01: Make all Feyrun bear the frost or fear the frost maiden, fuck.
- 1:12:46SPEAKER_01: Revere the cold goddess and sing her praises into any chill breeze and winter wind.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_01: Do not raise your hand against any other cleric of Oral.
- 1:12:55SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
- 1:12:56SPEAKER_03: I feel like the I feel like the creed was getting into territory of like okay, you have to take a cold shower at least once per day.
- 1:13:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's a good thing.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_03: And you also have to do kind of you also have to do the thing where you like put ice or you put salt on your hand, whatever.
- 1:13:13SPEAKER_03: And then you put the ice on it, and so then when you yeah, and it hurts, it hurts real bad.
- 1:13:17SPEAKER_03: Hurt real bad, yeah.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_03: You have to do that.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_03: Also until you stop being a fucking pussy, you know?
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_03: Cold showers only.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_01: The tenets of Orl's faith include cruelty, compassion makes you vulnerable.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_01: Let cruelty be the knife that keeps your enemies at bay.
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_01: Endurance.
- 1:13:34SPEAKER_01: Exist as long as you can by whatever means you can.
- 1:13:37SPEAKER_01: Only by enduring can you outlast your enemies.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_01: Isolation.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_01: In solitude, you can understand and harness your full potential.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_01: Depending on others, makes you weak.
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_01: Preservation.
- 1:13:48SPEAKER_01: Each flake of snow is unique, and that which is unique must be preserved.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_01: Which I feel like really does embody the fact that oral is a pocket full of contradictions.
- 1:14:01SPEAKER_02: Just yeah, pocket full of contradictions.
- 1:14:05SPEAKER_03: She she really needs to she really needs to go to therapy.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_02: She's got a pocket full of contradictions.
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_03: She's because like especially the cruelty, like compassion makes you vulnerable.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_03: It's like, girl, go to therapy.
- 1:14:19SPEAKER_03: Like we think the lady does protest.
- 1:14:22SPEAKER_03: Like, I know she's evil, okay, but I do think there's a little bit of like the lady don't protest too much, you know.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_03: I think.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_01: The rhyme of the frostmaiden is spoken as a poem, and that is the oh, it's a rhyme, it's a rhyme, and it's a rhyme.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_01: I fucking hate the English language.
- 1:14:45SPEAKER_03: I like I like homonyms.
- 1:14:47SPEAKER_01: No, I do too.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_01: I I do too.
- 1:14:49SPEAKER_01: I was I was being dramatic.
- 1:14:51SPEAKER_01: I will go ahead and read that one.
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_01: It this is gonna be a little bit of a longer of an episode, but it's okay because I fucked up and like multiple times, so I'm gonna cut off like at least 30 minutes of this.
- 1:15:01SPEAKER_02: Probably, yeah.
- 1:15:02SPEAKER_01: Okay, so the rhyme of the frostmaiden.
- 1:15:04SPEAKER_01: We bow to she who wears the crown, let the world shiver with dread, clad in winter's whitest gown, her snow enshrouds the dead.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_01: Her fury sheds but frozen tears as grey clouds issue forth, her wind across the wasteland shears, bringing blizzards from the north.
- 1:15:20SPEAKER_01: Her ice-kissed flowers caught mid-bloom, beauty kept in all its grace, summer's gone to its silent tomb, stilling in her cold embrace.
- 1:15:29SPEAKER_01: All the worlds in winter's white, sheath and slee at nice, set upon never ending night, she conjures paradise.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_01: Behold her everlasting rhyme, see how it covers all.
- 1:15:42SPEAKER_01: Weep not for those she traps in time behind her glacial wall.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_01: Sovereign of summer's lost, general of winter's war, long live the queen of cold and frost, may she reign forevermore.
- 1:15:56SPEAKER_03: Amen.
- 1:15:58SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry, I don't know why I said that.
- 1:16:01SPEAKER_01: Because you wanted to.
- 1:16:03SPEAKER_02: I I like it though.
- 1:16:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, that was really cool.
- 1:16:06SPEAKER_02: There are parts.
- 1:16:07SPEAKER_01: I don't know if the whole thing is iambic pentameter iambic pentameter, but like a good portion of it feels like it is.
- 1:16:16SPEAKER_01: Uh that's the one where it it the rhythm is like a heartbeat.
- 1:16:22SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 1:16:23SPEAKER_01: I think um Hallelujah, the song by No From Shrek.
- 1:16:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_01: The one from Shrek.
- 1:16:34SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
- 1:16:35SPEAKER_01: No, now I've forgotten the man.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_02: The man.
- 1:16:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Shrek.
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_03: That's the guy.
- 1:16:41SPEAKER_01: Leonard Cohen.
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_01: Leonard Cohen, hallelujah.
- 1:16:45SPEAKER_01: Um, the song from Shrek.
- 1:16:47SPEAKER_03: That's I think.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_03: Listen, that's just any song from those movies.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_01: Like I was trying to remember Leonard Cohen.
- 1:16:56SPEAKER_01: Anyway, that's I am big specimeter.
- 1:16:58SPEAKER_01: It's uh very rhythmic.
- 1:17:01SPEAKER_01: Priestly vestments.
- 1:17:02SPEAKER_01: Uh the priests of Oral wear ice-white ceremonial robes with blue piping.
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_01: I also hate the use of the word piping because it also makes me think of a cake.
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_01: What is with all of the cake imagery?
- 1:17:13SPEAKER_02: I believe they just wanted cake when they made this.
- 1:17:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they were just hungry.
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_01: Probably because they gave all their food to Oral.
- 1:17:19SPEAKER_03: Probably.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they were like, well shit, now we're hungry.
- 1:17:22SPEAKER_01: I believe that just means like the the trim is blue.
- 1:17:26SPEAKER_03: No, yeah, but they could have used it, they could have just said trim, you know.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_01: The robes are cinched at the waist by a very wide silver belt, which also holds the requisite ceremonial ice axe.
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_01: Very important.
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_01: Don't forget your ceremonial isacks.
- 1:17:41SPEAKER_03: Never, never forget that.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_01: The isax bears the snowflake in lozenge.
- 1:17:47SPEAKER_01: So they were hungry.
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_01: Lozenges aren't food.
- 1:17:51SPEAKER_01: Symbol of the faith.
- 1:17:53SPEAKER_01: I like I literally lozenges aren't food.
- 1:17:57SPEAKER_01: Lozenge?
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_01: Okay, but if you need something to if you're hungry and someone hands you, like really hungry and someone hands you a lozenge, are you gonna say no?
- 1:18:05SPEAKER_03: Well, okay, no, or like sometimes, sometimes when I, you know, I'm I'm sick, you know, I have a sore throat, I'll I'll pop more cough drops than is strictly necessary, and I'll be like, man, I should stop doing this.
- 1:18:19SPEAKER_03: I don't, but they're not food.
- 1:18:22SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:18:22SPEAKER_03: Dice are food, but but but cough drops are not food.
- 1:18:26SPEAKER_03: This just did.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_01: A silver circlet on the head is the final touch.
- 1:18:31SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 1:18:32SPEAKER_03: Never forget your silver circlet, never forget your ceremonial eye sacks.
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_01: In the Talos episode, I mentioned that Talos didn't really have any holidays, just like more rituals that you needed to perform on other people's holidays.
- 1:18:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, trying to steal the on other people's houses on other people's houses, you know.
- 1:18:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_01: Oral does have holidays.
- 1:18:51SPEAKER_01: She has Oral's Blessed Tide, uh, which is more of a case to um protect the cities from Oral.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_03: But it's still about her, so yeah.
- 1:19:04SPEAKER_01: On no set day, just a time where they think that they might need it.
- 1:19:12SPEAKER_01: A squad of griffin riders flying low over the city, blowing distinctive horns that proclaim it to be Oral's Day.
- 1:19:19SPEAKER_01: On this day, everyone in the city wears primarily white clothes and no one eats or serves hot meals in deference to the goddess of the cold.
- 1:19:27SPEAKER_01: In the past century, a disrespectful lark by some unclothed and besotted young nozzles.
- 1:19:34SPEAKER_01: I forgot to mention a portion of this did come from one of Volo's guides in like third or fourth edition.
- 1:19:40SPEAKER_01: Like those are written in the first person from Volo.
- 1:19:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and Volo is like that.
- 1:19:44SPEAKER_02: Volo is like that.
- 1:19:45SPEAKER_02: Volo is just like that.
- 1:19:47SPEAKER_01: Has become a traditional part of Oral's Day ceremonies.
- 1:19:50SPEAKER_01: A parade of white cloaked men and women literally runs from the cliffwatch in North Ward across the city through the West Gate and out the western benches or out the western beaches.
- 1:20:01SPEAKER_01: From there, the participants, mostly young nobles of or merchants, leap into the icy waters of the Sea of Swords, clad only in light white tunics, if clad at all, in order to gain the respective oral and sacrifice our warmth to stay the worst of her icy wrath in the coming winter.
- 1:20:16SPEAKER_03: See, that's fun because it reminds me of the pre-embracing like ritual.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_01: But like a miniature version that people can sustain.
- 1:20:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's less likely that's less likely to have you literally die of exposure.
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_02: They just go skinny dipping.
- 1:20:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:20:33SPEAKER_02: Basically.
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:20:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:20:35SPEAKER_01: Or like good.
- 1:20:38SPEAKER_01: Uh bad baptismal gown dipping.
- 1:20:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:20:42SPEAKER_02: Which from my understanding is pretty thin.
- 1:20:45SPEAKER_01: So various.
- 1:20:47SPEAKER_01: As someone who was raised Christian but non-Catholic, I I was baptized as a teenager, and it was a very thin white gown.
- 1:20:57SPEAKER_01: It was very cold, zero out of ten.
- 1:21:00SPEAKER_01: That sucks.
- 1:21:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:21:02SPEAKER_01: So uh the most holy time of the year to the clergy of Oral is midwinter night, obviously.
- 1:21:09SPEAKER_02: Obviously.
- 1:21:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:21:10SPEAKER_01: It is a festival of ice dancing that lasts the whole night, during which the goddess desires her clergy to both enjoy themselves and lure as many folk as possible into her service.
- 1:21:19SPEAKER_01: This is actually the time where most new postulants take undertake their embracing.
- 1:21:24SPEAKER_03: That makes sense.
- 1:21:25SPEAKER_03: Because it's cold outside, so they can just go.
- 1:21:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a mass embracing essentially.
- 1:21:29SPEAKER_03: They can just go outside the town.
- 1:21:30SPEAKER_03: They don't have to like actually make a trek to a glacier.
- 1:21:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:21:35SPEAKER_01: Thereafter, clergy, including the new members that have survived, usually pray in private by lying out in the snow all night long in prayer.
- 1:21:43SPEAKER_01: In summer, her clergy usually immerse themselves, except for their head, in the coldest water they can find, typically by lying down in a fast flowing stream.
- 1:21:52SPEAKER_01: I don't know why it had that.
- 1:21:55SPEAKER_01: Like that that's I left that in because I specifically wouldn't think I don't know why they had that under midwinter night.
- 1:22:03SPEAKER_01: Because midwinter night would take place in winter, not summer.
- 1:22:07SPEAKER_03: Well, I guess it's maybe just like uh I guess it is maybe just like included because it kind of felt in some like books that talk about this kind of thing, it'll sometimes be like holidays and rituals are in like their own, like in a section.
- 1:22:27SPEAKER_03: So sometimes it's like the whole like fast-flowing stream in the summer kind of thing.
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_03: Right might not be meant to be specifically like related to the midwinter night celebration.
- 1:22:38SPEAKER_03: It's just kind of like, oh, this is another like closer to daily ritual, not daily, but you know, like more regular ritual, not tied to a holiday that her clergy do.
- 1:22:48SPEAKER_03: And maybe they just kind of awkwardly didn't give it its own paragraph.
- 1:22:52SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:22:52SPEAKER_03: Like I think that in the I think that a similar thing happened in one of the books that uh had information about Carnepsis in it.
- 1:23:00SPEAKER_03: I think it kind of just awkwardly put something in there, like right after one of the holidays, you know.
- 1:23:06SPEAKER_01: That makes sense.
- 1:23:07SPEAKER_03: I think also the idea of that is really funny to me.
- 1:23:11SPEAKER_01: Oral will respond to their questions and give them directions and missions through mind visions.
- 1:23:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's what's funny.
- 1:23:17SPEAKER_03: I did read it, I did read that a little bit.
- 1:23:19SPEAKER_03: And so, like, I'm just imagining being like, oh fuck, I need guidance from my goddess.
- 1:23:24SPEAKER_03: Let me go lay down in the creek.
- 1:23:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:23:28SPEAKER_03: They're just laying there like.
- 1:23:31SPEAKER_01: Two informal but enthusiastically celebrated rituals are the coming storm and the last storm howling.
- 1:23:38SPEAKER_04: Ooh.
- 1:23:39SPEAKER_01: Uh, ice storms are called up by clergy working en masse with all the cold magic they can muster.
- 1:23:44SPEAKER_01: Together, they bring fierce winter down upon a town or region to mark the onset of winter or its last grasp as spring begins.
- 1:23:52SPEAKER_03: Nice thing.
- 1:23:53SPEAKER_03: They they heard about Groundhog Day and they were fucking pissed.
- 1:23:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:23:58SPEAKER_01: I do want to quickly talk about the blessings of Oral.
- 1:24:03SPEAKER_01: In Rhyme of the Frost Maiden, you as an adventurer can attain the blessing of the Frost Maiden, which is uh where you become as cold as ice and gain a mil immunity to cold damage.
- 1:24:16SPEAKER_01: You can also gain the ability to cast cone of cold, whatever.
- 1:24:20SPEAKER_01: Boring.
- 1:24:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but it is essentially you have to sort of appease Oral by withstanding a death saving throw, essentially, and if you fail, you are turned into an ice statue.
- 1:24:33SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 1:24:33SPEAKER_01: But if you succeed, then you become immune to the cold.
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_01: Sort of like a like giving a portion of the same blessing that she gives her clergy.
- 1:24:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh, I I'm not sure if that's worth it, but yeah.
- 1:24:47SPEAKER_01: Well, you can also receive the same blessing by just pure luck.
- 1:24:51SPEAKER_02: Oh, well, there you go.
- 1:24:53SPEAKER_01: If you are a midwinter child, which is born on midwinter's day during a particularly harsh winter, your character might possess immunity to the effects of extreme cold.
- 1:25:05SPEAKER_02: Sweet.
- 1:25:06SPEAKER_01: A one particular um person who had such a gift is named um I actually didn't write her name down, but she is the queen of the tiger tribe, or descended from the queen of the tri tiger tribe in you know, the um the Uzgar Barbarians, the tiger tribe.
- 1:25:26SPEAKER_02: Right, right, right.
- 1:25:29SPEAKER_01: When uh she was a young child, her mother threw her into the sea of moving ice as a sacrifice to Oral.
- 1:25:37SPEAKER_03: Okay, I was literally about to make a joke about how a person would find out about like being born with that particular ability, like prior to adulthood, say, and I'm just I was just I was imagining someone being like, you know, parents, they're inside, they're chilling by the fire in their little log cabin, and like the wife is like, Honey, where's the baby?
- 1:26:01SPEAKER_03: He's like, Oh fuck, I forgot the baby, and the baby's just like outside making a snow angel.
- 1:26:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, happy as a clam.
- 1:26:08SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 1:26:08SPEAKER_03: Except this is the worst version of that.
- 1:26:14SPEAKER_01: So a polar bear pulled her from the water to spare her from death.
- 1:26:19SPEAKER_01: Like, I guess mostly death by drowning, because again, immune to cold.
- 1:26:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:26:25SPEAKER_03: Immune to we got the report back.
- 1:26:27SPEAKER_03: She's immune to cold, but unfortunately, she is not immune to drowning.
- 1:26:31SPEAKER_01: Unfortunate.
- 1:26:32SPEAKER_01: But yeah, uh, she is a big character in the supplement.
- 1:26:38SPEAKER_01: Very interesting.
- 1:26:39SPEAKER_01: You can sort of work with her or oppose her.
- 1:26:43SPEAKER_01: I'll say that much.
- 1:26:44SPEAKER_03: I feel like you should definitely work with her.
- 1:26:47SPEAKER_03: Also, Taylor, you should read the rest of this.
- 1:26:49SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 1:26:50SPEAKER_03: Because this is metal as hell.
- 1:26:51SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah, I will.
- 1:26:52SPEAKER_01: It doesn't really relate to oral, but it it is really cool.
- 1:26:56SPEAKER_01: The polar bear that spared her, uh, then transformed into a Goliath, who then took her to safety in Ten Towns.
- 1:27:04SPEAKER_02: Fucking hell yeah.
- 1:27:06SPEAKER_01: The Goliath's name was Oya Manortalk.
- 1:27:10SPEAKER_01: I didn't look up how to pronounce that because I didn't plan on saying her name.
- 1:27:13SPEAKER_01: Oya Manotok.
- 1:27:15SPEAKER_01: But she she has not seen the Goliath since.
- 1:27:18SPEAKER_01: And then she ends with, I owe her my life just as I owe my mother a merciless death.
- 1:27:23SPEAKER_03: Sorry, I I wanted you to that one I agree with.
- 1:27:26SPEAKER_03: I wanted you to read that because when I read that, like text-wise, I read ahead a little bit.
- 1:27:30SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 1:27:30SPEAKER_03: It's okay.
- 1:27:31SPEAKER_03: When I read that, it gave me chills.
- 1:27:33SPEAKER_01: It oh, well.
- 1:27:34SPEAKER_03: So I I was yeah.
- 1:27:36SPEAKER_01: And they're multiplying.
- 1:27:38SPEAKER_03: I'm losing control.
- 1:27:40SPEAKER_01: I cannot believe we moved that whole episode without doing that.
- 1:27:43SPEAKER_01: Uh speaking of which, that's the end.
- 1:27:46SPEAKER_01: I I have covered all that I know about oral.
- 1:27:49SPEAKER_03: I think I think I could fix her.
- 1:27:51SPEAKER_03: I know she's I know she's evil, but I don't know.
- 1:27:55SPEAKER_01: She seems so fixable.
- 1:27:56SPEAKER_03: She's she's she does therapy.
- 1:27:58SPEAKER_03: She does so much compartmentalizing.
- 1:28:01SPEAKER_03: I feel like I I feel like there's something I could fix her.
- 1:28:05SPEAKER_01: At least for long enough for her to love you.
- 1:28:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and then after that it's like, well, and then kill you.
- 1:28:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's fine.
- 1:28:13SPEAKER_03: That's fine.
- 1:28:14SPEAKER_01: It's it's whatever.
- 1:28:15SPEAKER_03: Or or or mom me to death with her big talon bear paws.
- 1:28:20SPEAKER_03: Well, uh, thank you so much for listening to our episode on Oral.
- 1:28:24SPEAKER_03: Don't forget to tell your friends, your family, anyone you know who might like to um subscribe to her various platforms.
- 1:28:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, your friends who like ice mommies and winter.
- 1:28:40SPEAKER_03: Winter activities.
- 1:28:41SPEAKER_01: Winter activities.
- 1:28:43SPEAKER_01: That's what we're calling it now.
- 1:28:44SPEAKER_02: Winter activities.
- 1:28:46SPEAKER_02: Uh, if you have anything that you would like to suggest as a topic for us to cover, feel free to email us at dungeonpedia.podcast at gmail.com.
- 1:28:54SPEAKER_01: And thank you guys once again for listening.
- 1:28:57SPEAKER_01: And we'll catch you next week here on Dungeonpedia.
- 1:29:03SPEAKER_02: So I don't actually think you can fix her, but is that really a bad thing?
- 1:29:08SPEAKER_03: I mean, I can try.
- 1:29:12SPEAKER_03: Like her feels at all.
- 1:29:15SPEAKER_01: Okay, but
