- 0:22relaunch coming soon. Now let's get into this episode.
- 0:26Why is Jeff Bezos cashing out about $4.8 billion in Amazon
- 0:31stock and what does that say about his future, Amazon's
- 0:35outlook and the timing of his move to Florida?
- 0:39So Jeff Bezos has submitted notice that he will sell up to
- 0:4225,000,000 shares of Amazon by May 29th, 2026.
- 0:47The public filing, made with the Securities and Exchange
- 0:49Commission, states the sales are part of a prearranged trading
- 0:52plan initiated on March 4th. At Amazon's current share price,
- 0:56the potential sale amounts to about 4.8 billion now.
- 1:00This comes just one day after Amazon posted its first quarter
- 1:03results, which, while strong on paper, stirred new concerns
- 1:07about what lies ahead. Bezos, who's still Amazon's
- 1:11largest shareholder with over one point O 2 billion shares as
- 1:15of February, has already sold large blocks of stock before.
- 1:18But this latest disclosure raises new questions not just
- 1:22about Bezos, but about the shifting financial realities
- 1:25inside one of the most influential companies of all
- 1:28time. Amazon's earnings report arrived
- 1:30late Thursday and beat expectations in several
- 1:33categories. Revenue reached $155.7 billion
- 1:37for the quarter, marking a 9% increase from the same period a
- 1:41year ago, and net income surged to 17.1 billion, or 1.59 per
- 1:47share, outpacing Wall Street's expected 1.37 per share.
- 1:53Now, these numbers confirm that Amazon Score businesses,
- 1:56e-commerce Cloud advertising are still delivering, but the stock
- 2:00barely moved. Shares closed with just a .2%
- 2:04bump, trading at 190.62 dollars on Friday afternoon.
- 2:08And that limited reaction reflects what investors are
- 2:11still trying to understand how Amazon will handle the
- 2:13uncertainty stemming from political pressure in
- 2:16international trade volatility. Now, much of the concern centers
- 2:20on new tariffs introduced by Donald Trump's White House.
- 2:24Trump's measures could affect Amazon supply chain and pricing
- 2:27structures. Report serviced this week the
- 2:31Amazon was planning to visibly show customers the cost of
- 2:35tariffs on the website. Now, that detail set off alarms
- 2:39for Donald Trump and he personally called Jeff Bezos.
- 2:43Amazon later clarified that it was not making such a change,
- 2:46but the incident illustrated level of scrutiny now shadowing
- 2:49Bezos and his company. Now, Bezos has a history of
- 2:53liquidating large volumes of Amazon stock to fund his other
- 2:56ventures. 2023 he sold $13.5 billion worth of shares, the
- 3:01first time he had done so since stepping down as CEO in 2021.
- 3:05Then included two major sales, one in February involving 50
- 3:09million shares, another in July covering 29,000,000 more.
- 3:13And those transactions were both worth billions and were
- 3:17strategically timed. Now, one aspect of the timing
- 3:21caught particular attention. Bezos officially moved from
- 3:25Seattle, WA to Florida around the same time as those sales.
- 3:29The Washington state implemented a 7% capital gains tax in 2022,
- 3:34and if Bezos had remained in Washington, those sales would
- 3:37have resulted in nearly $949,000,000 in tax liability.
- 3:42And while he never publicly cited the tax as the reason for
- 3:45his relocation, public records show that he did not sell any
- 3:49Amazon stock in 2022 or 2023 while living in Washington.
- 3:53You know Florida has no state income tax or capital gains tax.
- 3:57The timing location change in stock sales paint a picture of
- 4:00carefully calculated financial strategy.
- 4:04Now, the new trading plan filed in March allows Bezos to spread
- 4:08the 25,000,000 share sale over a span of more than two years, and
- 4:12the structure suggests a more gradual exit compared to last
- 4:16year's compressed schedule. But even at a slower pace, it
- 4:20still adds up to a large dollar amount.
- 4:22It also signals that Bezos is not retreating from liquidating
- 4:26pieces of his Amazon stake, even if he continues to hold a
- 4:29billion shares in the company. And Jeff hasn't been in
- 4:33day-to-day control of Amazon since 2021, when Andy Jesse took
- 4:37over as CEO. But its financial moves still
- 4:40send a message, especially when they follow big corporate events
- 4:43are aligned with major political regulatory developments.
- 4:46After stepping away from Amazon, Bezos has devoted his attention
- 4:49to Blue Origin as aerospace company and the $10 billion
- 4:54Earth Fund he launched to address climate change and
- 4:56biodiversity. It's also still active in
- 4:59philanthropic efforts, including the Day One Fund, which supports
- 5:02education and housing initiatives in underserved
- 5:05communities. And selling shares allows him to
- 5:08fund these endeavors. But it also naturally invite
- 5:11scrutiny. If he's selling $4.8 billion
- 5:15worth of stock, people want to know why and where it's going.
- 5:18Is he making a personal pivot? Does he anticipate headwinds for
- 5:21Amazon? Or is he simply capitalizing on
- 5:23a favorable tax and marketing environment?
- 5:26Now, the reality could be a combination of all three.
- 5:29But when the world's second richest man moves billions out
- 5:33of the company he founded, Reservers, pay attention.
- 5:37There's another detail here that matters.
- 5:39Bezos adopted the trading plan on March 4th, a full month
- 5:43before Amazon's Q1 earnings report.
- 5:46Timing ensures the sale complies with SEC rules governing insider
- 5:50trading. Under Rule 10B51, executives can
- 5:54set up prearranged sales to avoid accusations that they're
- 5:57trading on material, non public information.
- 6:01These plans are meant to instill public confidence that such
- 6:04sales are routine and not opportunistic.
- 6:07Now, the muted reaction to Amazon's earnings suggests that
- 6:10even big profits are not enough to dispel anxiety about trade
- 6:13friction, political intervention and global economic shifts.
- 6:17And Bezos's decision to sell more shares can amplify that
- 6:20anxiety. The stock sales last year came
- 6:23during high points in Amazon's valuation.
- 6:25Now, this year's announcement arrives amid growing volatility
- 6:28in a different tone in Amazon's forward guidance.
- 6:32Now, what sets this round of sales apart from those in 2023
- 6:36is the broader context. In 2023, the sales followed a
- 6:39market rebounded coincided with Bezos's move to Florida.
- 6:42This time, Amazon is facing renewed tension with the White
- 6:45House and structural uncertainties in its supply
- 6:47chain. Whether tariffs will stick or
- 6:49how deeply they will affect Amazon's cost structure remains
- 6:52unclear. But Bezos making this move now
- 6:55suggests he wants flexibility and a potentially more turbulent
- 6:58business climate. The SAC filing didn't outline
- 7:02specific dates or amounts for each individual sale, simply
- 7:05lays out the maximum number of sales shares that may be sold by
- 7:09May 29th, 2026. Lack of a detailed calendar is
- 7:13the market may face sporadic moves as the trades unfold.
- 7:17Now in the end, basis is plan to sell $4.8 billion in stock.
- 7:21It's a move that he's making that's strategic.
- 7:24Whether the signals point to personal ambition, political
- 7:27calculation, or corporate uncertainty is preparing for
- 7:31what comes next. He's doing it with his own money
- 7:35and his own terms. Hey, thank you so much for
