- 0:14Speaker 1: broadcast by CBS on December 25th, 1955. Marshal Matt Dillon
- 0:20Speaker 1: discovers that Hakes and Monger are the last survivors of
- 0:24Speaker 1: two families bound by an old feud, bringing Dillon, Chester, Doc,
- 0:28Speaker 1: and Kitty into a conflict shaped by mountain custom. William
- 0:33Speaker 1: Conrad stars as Dillon, with Parley Bear, Howard McNair, and
- 0:38Speaker 1: Georgia Ellis. John Meston wrote the script, and Norman MacDonald
- 0:42Speaker 1: produced and directed. We now take you back to the
- 0:46Speaker 1: original broadcast.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the Territory on West, there's
- 1:01Speaker 2: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:04Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of Gunsmoke.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Gunsmoke Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The transcribed story of the
- 1:31Speaker 2: violence that moved west with young America. And the story
- 1:35Speaker 2: of a man who moved with it.
- 1:37Speaker 3: I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first
- 1:42Speaker 3: man they look for and the last they want to meet.
- 1:45Speaker 3: It's a chancy job. And it makes a man watchful.
- 1:50Speaker 4: And a little lonely.
- 2:05Speaker 5: Ah, good morning, Doc.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Chester.
- 2:18Speaker 6: Good morning, Mr.
- 2:19Speaker 7: Dillon. Come and have some coffee with us, Matt. You've
- 2:22Speaker 7: got nothing to do in your office.
- 2:24Speaker 4: No, but in there, people can't see me doing it.
- 2:27Speaker 7: Oh, it's no use to hide. They're on to you anyway.
- 2:29Speaker 3: You know, I don't think the Christmas season has made
- 2:31Speaker 3: you any more charitable at all, has it, Doc?
- 2:34Speaker 8: Well, I'm not a man to be good on Sunday
- 2:36Speaker 8: and sin all week, if that's what you mean.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Well, you're honest, if nothing else. Oh, I don't know. Hey,
- 2:42Speaker 4: look at that fellow.
- 2:44Speaker 7: What fellow, Chester?
- 2:45Speaker 8: Yonder, across the street there, in the coonskin hat. Oh,
- 2:49Speaker 8: now that's the tallest man I ever saw. And that
- 2:51Speaker 8: rifle he's carrying is as long as he is. He
- 2:54Speaker 8: sure looks out of place in Dodge, don't he?
- 2:56Speaker 4: He is out of place, Chester. That's a squirrel-hunting southern
- 3:00Speaker 4: mountain man.
- 3:01Speaker 6: He's coming over here. Look at him walk.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:06Speaker 8: If everybody had legs like that, the Santa Fe Railroad
- 3:08Speaker 8: would go out of business.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Oh, my, he's from the hills, all right.
- 3:12Speaker 7: Well, at least he ain't another gunman, Mr. Dillon.
- 3:15Speaker 4: That's something to be thankful for. Howdy. Hello.
- 3:20Speaker 7: Which of you be the... What do you call them?
- 3:25Speaker 4: Uh, you mean the marshal?
- 3:26Speaker 7: That's the word. I never heard it till a fella
- 3:29Speaker 7: told me this morning.
- 3:31Speaker 4: Well, I just mean the peace officer.
- 3:33Speaker 7: I'm again peace officers.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Uh-huh.
- 3:35Speaker 7: It ain't fittin' for some folk to be meddlin' in
- 3:38Speaker 7: other folks' business. Where do they figure it like that, stranger? Uh,
- 3:42Speaker 7: Ozark Mountains? Better country than this. My name's Eben Hakes.
- 3:47Speaker 4: My name is Dillon.
- 3:49Speaker 3: This is Chester Proudfoot and Doc Adams.
- 3:51Speaker 7: How do you do? Peace off, sir. The man said
- 3:54Speaker 7: you'd help me find where that Jothmonger is living.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Jothmonger?
- 3:59Speaker 7: Yeah. He come out here about a year ago. He's
- 4:02Speaker 7: got an old mountain gal with him. They're married.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Yeah, they got a place up near Rock Springs, about, oh,
- 4:08Speaker 3: ten miles north of here.
- 4:09Speaker 7: I'll find it.
- 4:11Speaker 4: You've come a long way to see your friend, Hakes.
- 4:14Speaker 7: Joss Monger ain't exactly a friend, peace officer. But I
- 4:18Speaker 7: got to get going, it being Saturday and all.
- 4:21Speaker 6: Well, what's Saturday got to do with it?
- 4:23Speaker 7: Nothing. Except I won't kill no man of a Sunday.
- 4:27Speaker 7: I never have. I never will.
- 4:56Speaker 8: Joss Monger's place don't look no better than.
- 4:58Speaker 4: It ever did, does it? Not much, Chester.
- 5:01Speaker 7: Oh, look at that poor Miss Monger. Out doing chores
- 5:04Speaker 7: as usual.
- 5:05Speaker 4: I wonder where Joss is. Asleep somewhere, probably. Morning, Miss Monger.
- 5:12Speaker 9: Howdy.
- 5:13Speaker 6: Howdy, ma'am.
- 5:14Speaker 9: Parley.
- 5:15Speaker 4: Is Joss here, ma'am?
- 5:17Speaker 9: If today wasn't Saturday, he'd be here.
- 5:19Speaker 10: What?
- 5:20Speaker 9: Joss goes to Dodge every Saturday.
- 5:22Speaker 4: He does? I never see him.
- 5:24Speaker 9: If he socialized more, you'd see him. Joss got his ways, Marshal.
- 5:29Speaker 9: They're lonesome, but they're his.
- 5:31Speaker 4: I see. Miss Monger, do you know a man called
- 5:35Speaker 4: Eben Hakes?
- 5:36Speaker 9: Hakes? If you speak that name around here, you won't
- 5:39Speaker 9: be welcome, Marshal.
- 5:41Speaker 4: There's trouble between you?
- 5:43Speaker 9: If you call Joth being the only monger left and
- 5:46Speaker 9: even being the only Hakes left, then you could say
- 5:49Speaker 9: there's trouble.
- 5:51Speaker 4: You mean it's a feud?
- 5:52Speaker 9: Both families been whittled down to just them two.
- 5:55Speaker 4: I see.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Is that why Joth came out to Kansas, to get
- 5:59Speaker 3: away from it?
- 6:00Speaker 9: Not if he's always talking about going back long enough
- 6:03Speaker 9: to kill even Hakes.
- 6:06Speaker 4: What do you think, ma'am? Don't you think it's gone
- 6:08Speaker 4: far enough?
- 6:09Speaker 9: Either one of them could call it off if he
- 6:12Speaker 9: wants so muley.
- 6:13Speaker 7: How did this feud start, ma'am?
- 6:16Speaker 9: If you had any upbringing, you wouldn't ask. It's a
- 6:20Speaker 9: family matter. Where'd you see even Heggs anyway?
- 6:24Speaker 3: He was in Dodge asking about Jock.
- 6:26Speaker 9: He was asking and he'll find him and that's bad.
- 6:30Speaker 9: Jock don't even know he's around.
- 6:31Speaker 4: That's why I came out here.
- 6:33Speaker 9: Jock knew about him. I wouldn't worry. Joss is better
- 6:37Speaker 9: shot than even Hanks any day.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Look, Miss Monger, the law doesn't hold with feuding. Whichever
- 6:41Speaker 3: one kills the other, he'll hang for it.
- 6:43Speaker 9: You start meddling, they'll shoot you. But I'm worried about Joss.
- 6:49Speaker 9: He'll be drunk soon as it's dark.
- 6:51Speaker 4: Well, I'll find him then.
- 6:52Speaker 6: Goodbye.
- 6:53Speaker 5: Goodbye.
- 6:53Speaker 11: Goodbye.
- 7:00Speaker 6: All hill people like that, Mr.
- 7:02Speaker 11: Dillon?
- 7:02Speaker 4: They're mighty independent, Justin.
- 7:04Speaker 6: Well, the law sure don't seem to mean much to them.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Not when it comes to feuding.
- 7:08Speaker 5: Now, look over there.
- 7:14Speaker 4: That little bluff there.
- 7:17Speaker 7: Well, now, how did he get here?
- 7:20Speaker 6: I don't see no horse.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Well, let's go ask him. Hello, Hicks.
- 7:30Speaker 7: That Joth Monger's place yonder, peace officer? Yeah.
- 7:34Speaker 11: Good.
- 7:35Speaker 7: I'll get a little closer and shoot him when he
- 7:37Speaker 7: comes out.
- 7:38Speaker 4: You don't care whether you hang or not, do you?
- 7:40Speaker 7: Hang? For shooting the Monger?
- 7:42Speaker 4: For shooting anybody. Do you ever hear of murder?
- 7:45Speaker 7: Peace officer, you're getting downright contrary.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Where's your horse, Hicks?
- 7:51Speaker 7: I got no horse.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Well, you left him in Dodge.
- 7:54Speaker 7: I don't need no horse to travel by.
- 7:58Speaker 4: You mean you walked all the way from the Ozarks?
- 8:01Speaker 7: It's mostly downhill, peace officer. But I'd walk anywhere to
- 8:05Speaker 7: get me monger.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Well, maybe I ought to throw you in jail.
- 8:11Speaker 7: Now you are being meddlesome. I got to get closer
- 8:14Speaker 7: to that house. And don't you fret none about the
- 8:17Speaker 7: old lady. I don't aim to shoot her.
- 8:20Speaker 4: Mr.
- 8:21Speaker 7: Dillon, you going to let Hanks wait here and shoot John?
- 8:24Speaker 4: No, let him go, Chester. Come on.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Let's get back to Dodge, and we'll find Joff and
- 8:28Speaker 3: warn him.
- 8:29Speaker 8: Why don't you just let them shoot each other and
- 8:32Speaker 8: have done with it?
- 8:34Speaker 4: Don't tempt me, Chester.
- 8:37Speaker 1: All right.
- 8:56Speaker 4: Now, Chester, you go ask Sam if he's seen Charles, huh? Okay. Evening, Kitty.
- 9:06Speaker 10: Hello, Matt.
- 9:07Speaker 6: Where you been?
- 9:07Speaker 11: It's pretty near midnight.
- 9:09Speaker 4: I've been trying to stop a feud.
- 9:11Speaker 11: Well, it's a long time since I've heard.
- 9:13Speaker 6: Of a feud around Dodge.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Well, this one kind of got transplanted from the Ozarks.
- 9:18Speaker 9: The Ozarks?
- 9:19Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 9:19Speaker 11: Huh. No wonder that crazy Jothmonger isn't mixed up in it.
- 9:22Speaker 4: Now, that's Joth I'm looking for.
- 9:24Speaker 3: You are? I bet on every saloon and dodge you
- 9:26Speaker 3: must have a cave somewhere.
- 9:29Speaker 11: I'll bet you a dollar he's right out.
- 9:30Speaker 9: Back, Matt.
- 9:31Speaker 4: Out back?
- 9:32Speaker 7: Sure.
- 9:32Speaker 11: He's there every Saturday night. Comes in and buys a
- 9:36Speaker 11: bottle of corn from Sam and takes it out.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Back and drinks it.
- 9:39Speaker 11: Sits there all alone with his long rifle in one
- 9:41Speaker 11: hand and his bottle in the other.
- 9:43Speaker 6: Nobody knows what he's thinking.
- 9:45Speaker 4: No wonder I haven't seen him around.
- 9:47Speaker 6: Oh, Miss Kitty.
- 9:49Speaker 4: Hello, Chester. Kitty just told me, Chester. Go out back
- 9:52Speaker 4: and see if he's there. If he is, bring him in.
- 9:54Speaker 10: Huh?
- 9:54Speaker 6: All right.
- 9:56Speaker 11: Who's Joth feuding with, Matt?
- 9:58Speaker 4: A man called Eben Hapes, Kitty. Is he from the Ozarks, too? Yeah,
- 10:02Speaker 4: he arrived today. On foot.
- 10:05Speaker 9: On foot?
- 10:06Speaker 4: Yeah, he's all legs. Real traveling man.
- 10:09Speaker 11: Hey, I'd like to see him.
- 10:11Speaker 3: He's got a face like a hatchet and he's built
- 10:13Speaker 3: like a piece of wire.
- 10:15Speaker 11: I'll bet he carries a long rifle, too.
- 10:17Speaker 4: He does.
- 10:17Speaker 7: Here he is, Mr.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Jones.
- 10:19Speaker 7: I made him leave his.
- 10:20Speaker 9: Rifle with Sam.
- 10:21Speaker 4: Hello, Jeff.
- 10:23Speaker 10: You just up and say what you want, Marshal, because
- 10:26Speaker 10: I don't care to be cooped up inside here very long.
- 10:30Speaker 4: Eben Hicks is looking for you, Jeff. Of course he is.
- 10:34Speaker 6: Mongers and the Hicks have been looking for each.
- 10:36Speaker 10: Other 940 years.
- 10:38Speaker 6: They most all got found, too.
- 10:41Speaker 4: You been drinking, Jeff?
- 10:43Speaker 10: Well, the missus won't allow no drinking on the place, Marshal,
- 10:47Speaker 10: so I gotta come to town every Saturday.
- 10:50Speaker 7: Joss Monger?
- 10:52Speaker 4: It's Hicks, Mr. Dillon. Get out of the way, kiddies.
- 10:57Speaker 7: I got you caught like a bar up a tree, Joss.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Put your rifle down, Hicks.
- 11:02Speaker 10: You're gonna kill me. I ain't even got no guns.
- 11:06Speaker 4: Put it down, I said.
- 11:07Speaker 7: You're standing in the way, peace officer.
- 11:10Speaker 4: And I'm going to stay here.
- 11:11Speaker 7: Then I'll have to shoot you first.
- 11:13Speaker 4: You're not going to shoot anybody.
- 11:14Speaker 7: Of course I am. That's what I come for, ain't it?
- 11:18Speaker 4: Don't try it.
- 11:19Speaker 7: Now, here.
- 11:20Speaker 6: Wait a minute, everybody.
- 11:20Speaker 7: I just thought of something. I wished all you folks
- 11:23Speaker 7: had stopped meddling in this. It's after midnight, Higgs. What?
- 11:26Speaker 6: It's Sunday.
- 11:28Speaker 7: Sunday?
- 11:28Speaker 4: Yeah, he's right, Higgs.
- 11:31Speaker 7: Well, of all the gobbling luck... Oh, quit looking so troubled, Joss.
- 11:37Speaker 7: I won't shoot no man of a Sunday, even a monger.
- 11:41Speaker 7: But you come awful close to.
- 11:43Speaker 4: It, Eden.
- 11:43Speaker 7: It's a doggone shame it took me so long to
- 11:46Speaker 7: find you today.
- 11:48Speaker 6: You traveled a long way, Eden.
- 11:50Speaker 7: I know, but I got tired waiting for you to
- 11:52Speaker 7: come on back home, Joss.
- 11:54Speaker 6: I was coming. I was coming this summer.
- 11:57Speaker 7: I know, but your old lady told me about it today.
- 12:01Speaker 7: I seen her scratching around doing chores. That ain't much
- 12:05Speaker 7: of a place you got.
- 12:06Speaker 4: There, John. Be quiet, Chester.
- 12:08Speaker 10: Oh, a fella can make a crop here sometimes, Eden.
- 12:13Speaker 10: But it's a hard fight with a short stick. I
- 12:16Speaker 10: didn't see no hogs out there. Where's your hogs, John?
- 12:20Speaker 10: I'm getting some come spring. Eden, how's things back home?
- 12:27Speaker 7: Well, there's been a lot of changes since you left. Eden?
- 12:32Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 12:33Speaker 6: I got a little jug out back.
- 12:36Speaker 10: Smoke's empty now, but we can maybe buy another one,
- 12:39Speaker 10: sit out there for a spell, kind of get soured
- 12:42Speaker 10: on the cob.
- 12:43Speaker 6: What say you?
- 12:45Speaker 7: Might as well. We can't do no shooting till Monday.
- 12:49Speaker 7: Where at do we buy this jug?
- 12:51Speaker 6: I'll show you. Fellow over here said.
- 12:54Speaker 7: You'll have to lend me some money. All right.
- 12:56Speaker 8: Well, if they don't be all, Mr.
- 12:59Speaker 4: Dillon. Yeah.
- 13:01Speaker 9: Looks to me like they're going to call that feud off.
- 13:04Speaker 4: No, not them, Chester.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Midnight tomorrow, they'll be stalking each other all over again.
- 13:08Speaker 6: Well, how are you going to stop them?
- 13:10Speaker 3: Well, I'll let them enjoy themselves tonight. But tomorrow, I'm
- 13:14Speaker 3: going to throw them both in jail. And they're going
- 13:17Speaker 3: to stay there until they learn something more than feuding.
- 13:36Speaker 3: I wasn't sure that jail would teach Joth and even
- 13:39Speaker 3: a thing. But I still couldn't let them run loose
- 13:41Speaker 3: and shoot each other down. So the next morning, Chester
- 13:45Speaker 3: and I went looking for them. We found where they'd
- 13:48Speaker 3: built a small fire out back of the long branch.
- 13:52Speaker 4: And we found a number of empty bottles. But that
- 13:54Speaker 4: was all. We searched the town till noon with no luck.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Then I decided to ride out to the monger place
- 14:01Speaker 3: and see if by any chance Joth had returned. There
- 14:05Speaker 3: was nobody in sight when we got there. So we
- 14:08Speaker 3: dismounted and walked up to the door.
- 14:10Speaker 8: There's smoke coming out of the chimney, Mr.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Jones.
- 14:13Speaker 4: That doesn't mean Joth's here, Chester. No, sir. Afternoon.
- 14:24Speaker 9: Don't go away, Marshal.
- 14:26Speaker 4: Now, wait a minute, Miss Martin.
- 14:27Speaker 9: If you don't want to get shot, you'll do what
- 14:29Speaker 9: I say.
- 14:32Speaker 4: Friendly, ain't she? Yeah.
- 14:35Speaker 6: But she didn't have no gun. It must be Joth
- 14:37Speaker 6: in there.
- 14:38Speaker 4: Yeah, probably. Well, if it is, why would he want
- 14:40Speaker 4: to shoot you? Well, there's one reason I can think of.
- 14:45Speaker 7: You mean he's gone and killed Eben Hakes?
- 14:47Speaker 4: I don't know, Chester. But I'm sure going to find out.
- 14:57Speaker 4: They ain't gonna open it. Oh, there's a window around
- 15:00Speaker 4: the side.
- 15:01Speaker 6: It ain't a very clean window.
- 15:08Speaker 4: It'll do. Here, let me take a look. I'll let
- 15:14Speaker 4: it be.
- 15:15Speaker 7: What is it, Mr.
- 15:16Speaker 11: Jones?
- 15:18Speaker 4: Here, have a look yourself.
- 15:19Speaker 6: All right. Well, they're eating dinner. All three of them.
- 15:25Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 15:26Speaker 4: Come on. I want to talk to the men, Ms. Munger,
- 15:34Speaker 4: and I'm coming in. Josh! All right, stay away from
- 15:46Speaker 4: those rifles.
- 15:47Speaker 10: Why, he busted in. He busted in right past the woman.
- 15:51Speaker 7: I never heard of a man coming into another man's
- 15:53Speaker 7: house that way.
- 15:54Speaker 9: If he had any upbringing, he wouldn't have.
- 15:57Speaker 7: Is this the kind of people they got in Kansas, Jock?
- 16:00Speaker 6: It's the first I seen of them.
- 16:01Speaker 3: Never mind about that, Jock. Now, why did your wife
- 16:04Speaker 3: threaten to shoot me? What's going on here?
- 16:07Speaker 9: If you hadn't come to put them in jail, you
- 16:09Speaker 9: wouldn't get shot, Marshal.
- 16:11Speaker 4: How did you know I was going to put them
- 16:12Speaker 4: in jail?
- 16:13Speaker 9: Ethan says you told him you was.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Oh, that's right. I did it. If he killed anybody.
- 16:18Speaker 7: I ain't killed nobody.
- 16:19Speaker 6: The feud's off. We stopped it.
- 16:22Speaker 4: You stopped it?
- 16:23Speaker 7: Sure. Last night, we got to talking a little about
- 16:27Speaker 7: old times and everything.
- 16:29Speaker 4: And you know what we found out? No.
- 16:32Speaker 5: What?
- 16:33Speaker 4: You tell him.
- 16:34Speaker 7: Well, peace officer, this here feud started a long time ago.
- 16:39Speaker 7: What happened was my grandfather stole Joss' grandfather's girl and
- 16:42Speaker 7: married up with her, so Joss' grandfather declared a feud
- 16:46Speaker 7: right then and there.
- 16:46Speaker 6: But you ain't told him what we found out, you didn't.
- 16:49Speaker 7: Oh, well, we hadn't thought of it before, peace officer,
- 16:52Speaker 7: but last night we was thinking that if my grandfather
- 16:55Speaker 7: hadn't done that, then Joss here would have been me.
- 17:00Speaker 4: What?
- 17:00Speaker 7: Don't you see? Otherwise, my grandmother would have married up
- 17:04Speaker 7: with Joss' grandfather.
- 17:05Speaker 10: And I'd have been Joss. So any way you look
- 17:07Speaker 10: at it, we're kind of related, like. Any way you
- 17:10Speaker 10: looked at it last night, you mean.
- 17:11Speaker 4: I saw them, Bob. No, it doesn't matter, Chester, as
- 17:14Speaker 4: long as the feud is off.
- 17:16Speaker 10: It ain't only off. Eden's going to stay on here
- 17:19Speaker 10: with us. We're going to work this place together. I'm
- 17:24Speaker 10: going to give him a share in it come Christmas.
- 17:26Speaker 4: Come Christmas?
- 17:27Speaker 6: It ain't far off. January 6th. Now, here, wait a minute.
- 17:32Speaker 6: Since when did Christmas get to be January 6th?
