- 2:13Speaker 3: the Angie roll on the show. Plus, your calls and
- 2:15Speaker 3: texts are always welcome. Let's start by talking high school football.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Chris Lawrence joins us in studio. Good morning, sir, and
- 2:20Speaker 3: Happy Halloween. Same and Tom Bragg is an undisclosed location.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Good morning to you too, sir. Hi guys, all right, Chris,
- 2:28Speaker 3: I want to start with you. Happy Halloween. Favorite Halloween candy?
- 2:31Speaker 3: Oh uh, butterfinger? Butterfingers, butterfinger or a pay day?
- 2:37Speaker 5: All right?
- 2:37Speaker 3: Do you get a lot of you get a lot
- 2:39Speaker 3: of tricker treaters at Lawrence Mansion. We have in our
- 2:42Speaker 3: little neighborhood.
- 2:43Speaker 6: We've got like thirty houses and of those thirty houses,
- 2:47Speaker 6: probably half of them have trick or treating age kids. Uh,
- 2:52Speaker 6: they're usually it takes about thirty to forty five minutes
- 2:55Speaker 6: and they're done. And we're not a big enough housing
- 2:58Speaker 6: development to draw those kids from in the out out
- 3:03Speaker 6: on out the area. We're the first housing development when
- 3:07Speaker 6: you start toward town, okay, but generally they pass us
- 3:10Speaker 6: up to go to one of those big places down
- 3:11Speaker 6: the Hurricane and get on those megaplaces like where you live.
- 3:16Speaker 3: We don't really have a lot where I live now.
- 3:18Speaker 3: The development next to us has a lot, and sometimes
- 3:21Speaker 3: they'll trickle in, but we don't have a whole lot
- 3:23Speaker 3: of it.
- 3:24Speaker 6: And I purposely, in the last several years, have just decided,
- 3:29Speaker 6: you know what, I'm biting the bullet. I'm going to
- 3:31Speaker 6: be that guy. I'm going to be that house I
- 3:34Speaker 6: give out full sized candy bar.
- 3:35Speaker 3: There you go.
- 3:36Speaker 6: I just go to Sam's and get a big case
- 3:38Speaker 6: of them, and I'm just like, here you go, here's
- 3:40Speaker 6: a full sized Hershey bar. Enjoy it like they did
- 3:43Speaker 6: in the nineteen forties.
- 3:45Speaker 3: There you go. All right, talk about your game tonight.
- 3:47Speaker 6: We got Nitro and Capital on the air well, and
- 3:51Speaker 6: I don't know yet what time will be on the air.
- 3:53Speaker 6: Supposed to be six thirty and then the kickoff is
- 3:55Speaker 6: supposed to be at seven. However, I was told earlier
- 3:57Speaker 6: this week that there is debate about whether they want
- 4:00Speaker 6: to move it back to seven thirty to accommodate trick
- 4:02Speaker 6: or treating. I don't know if they've done that or not.
- 4:05Speaker 6: I need to check on that of course today, but
- 4:07Speaker 6: either way we will be on after the sports line.
- 4:09Speaker 6: It might be an abbreviated sports line, or it might
- 4:11Speaker 6: be the whole sports line. I don't know at this point,
- 4:14Speaker 6: but the matchup is an intriguing one. We saw Nitro
- 4:18Speaker 6: last week against Winfield struggled a little bit because they
- 4:21Speaker 6: came out of the block first of all, making a
- 4:23Speaker 6: lot of mistakes penalty wise. Then they turned the ball over,
- 4:26Speaker 6: coughed it up several times and Winfield got on them. Now,
- 4:29Speaker 6: once they settled down and cut out those mistakes, they
- 4:32Speaker 6: were able to pull away in the second half. Capital,
- 4:34Speaker 6: as always has the propensity to really wear you out
- 4:37Speaker 6: because they've got blazing speed of the skill positions and
- 4:41Speaker 6: you've really got to control day A. Robinson. He is
- 4:43Speaker 6: the main threat out of that Capital backfield. It'll be
- 4:46Speaker 6: interesting to see if they corral him. Nitro on the
- 4:49Speaker 6: on their hands, got a lot of weapons. You might
- 4:51Speaker 6: it's kind of like whack them hole. You might cover
- 4:53Speaker 6: one hole, but like four more are going to burn you.
- 4:56Speaker 6: So that's a difficult team to defend again, So it'll
- 4:58Speaker 6: be interesting tonight following the show tonight or following the
- 5:01Speaker 6: game tonight, will have Metro News Game Night with Fred
- 5:04Speaker 6: and Dave all.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Right on Westervirginia Outdoors. Tomorrow morning.
- 5:06Speaker 6: We're going to talk actually it's going to be kind
- 5:09Speaker 6: of like a talk line tomorrow. We're going to talk
- 5:10Speaker 6: about Hunters Helping the Hungry and the way it relates
- 5:15Speaker 6: to what's going on right now with the situation with
- 5:18Speaker 6: the government shutdown and the snap benefits being canceled. Because
- 5:20Speaker 6: obviously it's an important time for the Mountaineer Food Bank.
- 5:25Speaker 6: So we'll have the folks in the Mountaineer Food Bank
- 5:27Speaker 6: on to talk about. I mean, every year they do
- 5:29Speaker 6: the Hunters Helping the Hunging program. It's the largest donation
- 5:33Speaker 6: of red meat to the food bank every year. We
- 5:36Speaker 6: will talk to them this year about how important that is.
- 5:39Speaker 6: Plus a couple of offshoots of that. To defray the
- 5:43Speaker 6: cost of this, they have to get donations to pay
- 5:45Speaker 6: for the processing of the meat, and they've got a
- 5:47Speaker 6: couple of ways they do that. One was last weekend
- 5:50Speaker 6: they had what they call the Governor's One Shot Hunt,
- 5:53Speaker 6: which is a special hunt that is put together and
- 5:55Speaker 6: has been for many I think twenty years now. By
- 5:58Speaker 6: some volunteer organizations and then they have a banquet and
- 6:02Speaker 6: it's kind of a fundraiser that they bring in people
- 6:04Speaker 6: to do that. But Sunday is what they determine to
- 6:10Speaker 6: share the harvest. Sunday where they ask everybody. The Council
- 6:13Speaker 6: of the West Virginia Council of Churches asked everybody in
- 6:16Speaker 6: church in West Virginia on Sunday to give one dollar.
- 6:19Speaker 6: If everybody that was in church on Sunday in West
- 6:22Speaker 6: Virginia gave a dollar, they'd pay for the program like
- 6:24Speaker 6: six times. I mean that that would that That's the
- 6:27Speaker 6: reality of it, And so they try to they try
- 6:31Speaker 6: to get churches to take up special donation to help
- 6:33Speaker 6: pay for it, and those two things seem to have
- 6:35Speaker 6: always helped out a lot.
- 6:38Speaker 3: So enjoy your broadcast whatever time it starts tonight, exactly
- 6:42Speaker 3: will eventually be on the air. That's the plan. All right.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Tom Bragg is with us right now. Good morning, sir.
- 6:47Speaker 3: How are you doing well, Dave?
- 6:49Speaker 7: How are you?
- 6:50Speaker 3: I'm doing fine? Your favorite Halloween candy? Because I'm asking
- 6:52Speaker 3: everybody now today what's your favorite?
- 6:54Speaker 7: Oh my gosh, I know, Chris said, Butterfinger. I like
- 6:56Speaker 7: a Butterfinger, but they get stuck in my teeth too much.
- 6:58Speaker 7: I like the I like the recent cups. I like
- 7:01Speaker 7: a good dumb dumb sucker every now and then. But yeah,
- 7:03Speaker 7: probably the recent cups are my number one.
- 7:05Speaker 3: All right? Do you get a lot of trick or
- 7:06Speaker 3: treaters at your place?
- 7:07Speaker 7: You know, not at our house. Our neighborhood has a
- 7:10Speaker 7: ton of trick or treaters. But the way our house
- 7:13Speaker 7: is situated in the neighborhood, it's a little bit off
- 7:15Speaker 7: the beaten path. If you come to our house, you
- 7:17Speaker 7: got to walk back up a big hill to get
- 7:19Speaker 7: to where all the good trick or treat houses are.
- 7:21Speaker 7: So we get a couple of stragglers, but only only
- 7:24Speaker 7: the brave who want to walk back up the hill.
- 7:25Speaker 3: I got you, I got you. I talk about your
- 7:27Speaker 3: game tonight, Tom, And of course your game is Chris's
- 7:29Speaker 3: Games on WCHS. Your game on the Superstar Country ninety
- 7:32Speaker 3: six one KWS featuring feature in Herbert Hoover. What you
- 7:35Speaker 3: got tonight?
- 7:36Speaker 7: Yeah, Husky's back at home after a long and probably
- 7:40Speaker 7: disappointing trip. If you're a Hoover fan last week to Frankfurt.
- 7:43Speaker 7: Huskies have Parkersburg Big Red's coming to elf you tonight.
- 7:46Speaker 7: I believe, as similar with Chris, I believe kickoff is
- 7:49Speaker 7: at seven o'clock. I know Herbert Hoover hosted a trunk
- 7:52Speaker 7: retreat event at the at the at the school last
- 7:54Speaker 7: night for the people in the community, So I don't
- 7:56Speaker 7: think they're pushing the kickoff back. But you never know
- 7:59Speaker 7: if the trick or treats. It's kind of thrown a
- 8:00Speaker 7: lot of things in flux this week, but I expect
- 8:03Speaker 7: a good game tonight. You know, Parkersburg is a quote
- 8:05Speaker 7: unquote big school playing in the four A classification. Big
- 8:09Speaker 7: Reds have won five games this season. Their ranked number
- 8:11Speaker 7: nine in four A, so a playoff team. But when
- 8:14Speaker 7: you start digging into it, you look at their five wins.
- 8:17Speaker 7: The teams they've beat are combined ten and thirty one
- 8:19Speaker 7: Is two and six, Hurricane two and six, Parkersburg South,
- 8:22Speaker 7: two and six, Riverside one and seven, Cable Midland and
- 8:25Speaker 7: three and six Ripley. They've lost when they've played teams
- 8:28Speaker 7: with a pulse for I guess lack of a better term,
- 8:31Speaker 7: And we'll see what Herbert Hoover has. You know, they're
- 8:33Speaker 7: kind of licking their wounds coming off a loss at
- 8:34Speaker 7: Frankfort last week. The Huskies couldn't really get out of
- 8:37Speaker 7: their own way. They had some sloppy play, some penalties
- 8:40Speaker 7: really affected them. They kind of got beat on. Both
- 8:43Speaker 7: offensive lines, had trouble getting the running game going, which
- 8:45Speaker 7: is such a big part of their offensive attack. And
- 8:49Speaker 7: on the other side of that, Frankfort did. All credit
- 8:51Speaker 7: to Frankfort. That was a really good football team Matt
- 8:53Speaker 7: Murphy and I saw last week. But they run that
- 8:55Speaker 7: single wing almost two perfection, and Herbert Hoover had a
- 8:58Speaker 7: real hard time stopping that. We're doing to be a
- 9:00Speaker 7: little different. It's going to be more of a traditional
- 9:03Speaker 7: look for what you've got to defend versus that single wing.
- 9:06Speaker 7: So it should be an interesting game. I think on paper,
- 9:09Speaker 7: Herbert Hoover would probably be the favorite, all things considered,
- 9:11Speaker 7: but this time of year you never know, so I
- 9:14Speaker 7: expect a good game. Should be a fun one down
- 9:16Speaker 7: and no with you to see me.
- 9:17Speaker 3: We'll be listening. Hey, Tom, I appreciate you being here, man,
- 9:19Speaker 3: thanks a lot, have a great broadcast. You guys. Be
- 9:21Speaker 3: safe tonight.
- 9:22Speaker 7: Hey, thanks Dave. Happy Halloween.

- 9:47Speaker 3: Gilla wanted this morning. Making her debut on the show
- 9:50Speaker 3: is Rachel Cope. Good morning, Welcome to the show.
- 9:53Speaker 8: Hi. How are you?
- 9:54Speaker 3: I'm doing fine? How are you? You sound enthusiastic?
- 9:57Speaker 8: Hi, I'm so excited to be able to to be
- 10:00Speaker 8: here and do this. I love talking about our animals
- 10:03Speaker 8: and this is a radio debut for me, so I'm
- 10:06Speaker 8: excited for everybody to hear my voice.
- 10:08Speaker 3: And as always, our pedal of the week's picture posted
- 10:10Speaker 3: on Dave Allen Radio and Facebook, also the WCCHS Network
- 10:13Speaker 3: Facebook page and at Dave A seventy on X Love
- 10:17Speaker 3: the name Rachel tell Us about ka.
- 10:20Speaker 8: Uh kil Basa is like a handful of energy. Everybody
- 10:24Speaker 8: at the shelter loves this dog. He is the silliest
- 10:27Speaker 8: little thing in the world. He is kid friendly, loves kids.
- 10:31Speaker 8: He is a clack clown, which essentially at the shelter
- 10:34Speaker 8: means that he is like he's funny at the end
- 10:37Speaker 8: of day, like he just does things that'll make you laugh.
- 10:39Speaker 8: He's very like jumpy. He is great with other dogs.
- 10:43Speaker 8: He does great in our playgroups. He prefers a playful dog,
- 10:47Speaker 8: so if you do have another dog in your household,
- 10:49Speaker 8: he is of course going to what a more like
- 10:53Speaker 8: playful one, not a senior. He is three years old,
- 10:58Speaker 8: I believe, and he's forty eight five pounds. I think
- 11:02Speaker 8: he's a great little guy. And I don't know if
- 11:04Speaker 8: you saw his picture, but he's got those beautiful multi
- 11:06Speaker 8: colored eyes, that one bright blue eye. He's just an angel.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Now is he three or five? Because I thought you
- 11:12Speaker 3: said five, he's five? Yeah, okay, five? Five okay yeah,
- 11:15Speaker 3: And again I do have the picture posted. Is always
- 11:18Speaker 3: over my social media, so go check it out. We'll
- 11:19Speaker 3: get back to Keil Bossa in a moment. National Cat
- 11:22Speaker 3: Day was earlier this week. You a cat, a dog,
- 11:24Speaker 3: person or both?
- 11:26Speaker 8: Oh, I love all of them. I love both. They're
- 11:28Speaker 8: just they're so funny. We have so many fun cats
- 11:31Speaker 8: in the shelter too, What about you.
- 11:33Speaker 3: I like dogs and cats, but lifestyle is more conducive
- 11:36Speaker 3: to the cats. So my wife and I have cats. Yeah, yeah,
- 11:39Speaker 3: cats are simple. Our cats never go out of the house.
- 11:41Speaker 3: They have no people have heard me tell them the
- 11:43Speaker 3: story before. They were both both showed up at our
- 11:46Speaker 3: doorstep as strays. They have no interest in going out whatsoever.
- 11:49Speaker 3: They're They're perfectly perfectly happy to stay in the house. Hey,
- 11:53Speaker 3: I want to ask you a serious question here, and
- 11:55Speaker 3: we have a text about it this morning. Earlier this week,
- 11:57Speaker 3: it was reported that the Charleston Police Department helped rest
- 12:00Speaker 3: a puppy that was tied to a rock down by
- 12:03Speaker 3: the river, and they were asking on social media for
- 12:05Speaker 3: the public to identify who did this. Were you guys
- 12:08Speaker 3: involved in this at all?
- 12:11Speaker 8: So you were actually talking to the right person. I'm
- 12:13Speaker 8: actually very good friends with the humane officer that was
- 12:16Speaker 8: in charge with us, and she sent me pictures of
- 12:18Speaker 8: her in the river rescuing this dog, and we currently
- 12:23Speaker 8: have the animal in our care.
- 12:24Speaker 5: He or she.
- 12:26Speaker 8: Sorry, we thought he was a boy, but she's a girl.
- 12:27Speaker 8: She's doing great. She is the most loving thing in
- 12:31Speaker 8: the world, if if we could like blankets are always
- 12:35Speaker 8: asked and needed if anybody is interested in donating. But
- 12:39Speaker 8: we are definitely involved in that, and we are giving
- 12:41Speaker 8: the animal the best care in the world.
- 12:43Speaker 3: And so is the animal available for adoption now or
- 12:47Speaker 3: unfortunately not?
- 12:49Speaker 8: They are actively trying to find an owner.
- 12:51Speaker 3: Charges Yeah, well good, and I hope they find that person,
- 12:54Speaker 3: I really really do. And so the animal is gonna
- 12:56Speaker 3: kind of be held as evidence, I guess right now,
- 12:58Speaker 3: but eventually that animal, hopefully will be will be available
- 13:02Speaker 3: for adoption quickly. Are you guys out and about anywhere
- 13:04Speaker 3: this weekend? I know sometimes you do public events on
- 13:06Speaker 3: the weekend. You get anything going on this weekend that
- 13:08Speaker 3: you're aware of?
- 13:09Speaker 8: Yeah, We've actually got this thing going on tomorrow. It's
- 13:11Speaker 8: a Tay Valley Petco. We've got a few kittens and
- 13:13Speaker 8: dogs that are gonna be there, and I'm actually going
- 13:16Speaker 8: to be at an adoption event tomorrow at Virginia State University.
- 13:19Speaker 8: We've got a lot of puppies that we're bringing, So
- 13:21Speaker 8: come out and see us.
- 13:22Speaker 3: All right, Rachel, you did fine, You're gonna do okay
- 13:25Speaker 3: when once you learned to get a little bit more excited. Yes,
- 13:29Speaker 3: appreciate you being here and we'll talk again soon. Thanks
- 13:32Speaker 3: a lot.
- 13:32Speaker 8: All right, thank you bye.
- 13:34Speaker 3: Rachel Cope again from the Kennel Charleston HU Main Association.
- 13:37Speaker 3: Kia Bassa is our dog, around three years old, super
- 13:40Speaker 3: high energy, just over forty eight pounds, that multi colored eyes, beautiful,
- 13:43Speaker 3: beautiful dog. Good with kids and other dogs. Probably more
- 13:46Speaker 3: playful dogs because he is very energetic. So if you
- 13:49Speaker 3: got a senior dog, probably not a good idea. You
- 13:51Speaker 3: can see his picture. It's posted at Dave Alan Radio

- 16:06Speaker 3: Tom Susman's going to join a spokesperson for the canaw
- 16:09Speaker 3: Emergency Ambulance Service Authority. That announcement coming down yesterday took
- 16:12Speaker 3: some people by surprise. This there's a divide with the
- 16:15Speaker 3: ambulance service and the folks at at Highmark Blue Cross,
- 16:19Speaker 3: Blue Shield will talk to Tom about that. Plus, Zack
- 16:21Speaker 3: Maynard is going to join us. He will be he's
- 16:23Speaker 3: not been officially sworn in yet, I don't think, but
- 16:24Speaker 3: he'll be the new state senator, replacing Mike Stewart who

- 16:53Speaker 3: Good morning, Happy.
- 16:54Speaker 9: Halloween, Morning, Dave, Happy Halloween.
- 16:56Speaker 3: All right, So favorite Halloween candy we're asking everybody today.
- 17:00Speaker 5: Oh gosh, should I be controversial and go with candy corn?
- 17:03Speaker 3: Yes? That would be extremely controversy, extremely controversy. I actually
- 17:07Speaker 3: I'm not a big I'm not a big sweet seater,
- 17:09Speaker 3: to be honest with you. But when I don't mind
- 17:12Speaker 3: candy corn, it's like one of those things. It's one
- 17:14Speaker 3: of those things that people either love or hate. I'm
- 17:17Speaker 3: a big blue cheese guy. People either love blue cheese
- 17:20Speaker 3: or hate blue cheese. There's no in between, my wife
- 17:22Speaker 3: in between on them one. Oh okay, we made some
- 17:24Speaker 3: steaks last night. I want to crumble up little blue
- 17:26Speaker 3: cheese on top of it all right. But anyway, so candy,
- 17:29Speaker 3: corn corn, how about you again, I'm not a big
- 17:33Speaker 3: sweet seat. Give me meat and cheese and I'm perfectly
- 17:36Speaker 3: happy to just just meat and cheese. I will eat
- 17:40Speaker 3: about anything. I really, I really don't care. I don't
- 17:43Speaker 3: really have a favorite to anything.
- 17:45Speaker 5: You like dark chocolate, but that's not really halloween candy.
- 17:47Speaker 3: Yeah, my wife's the big dark chocolate. I mean, she
- 17:50Speaker 3: would gut me in a minute for for some dark
- 17:53Speaker 3: chocolate if I had something.
- 17:54Speaker 9: That's right, all right?
- 17:56Speaker 3: Uh, So I want to talk about it. An alumni group.
- 17:59Speaker 3: You said when you were on one of your previous
- 18:01Speaker 3: appearances here that Bridge Valley's looking at doing an alumni group.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Talk about that.
- 18:04Speaker 5: So, Bridge Valley's only ten years old, we've never had
- 18:08Speaker 5: an alumni association, and so our foundation and alumni association
- 18:12Speaker 5: now exists.
- 18:14Speaker 9: And so if you are a.
- 18:16Speaker 5: Graduate from Bridge Valley, from Bridgemont, or from Canaw Valley,
- 18:19Speaker 5: we consider you part of our alumni family.
- 18:22Speaker 9: And so we have a.
- 18:23Speaker 5: Group now of former students who have put together this group.
- 18:27Speaker 9: They're actively recruiting more.
- 18:28Speaker 5: We'd love more folks to join, and so far they've
- 18:31Speaker 5: done business after hours. They're really working on networking. They're
- 18:34Speaker 5: helping people connect to jobs in the area. They actually
- 18:36Speaker 5: want to hire alumni into their businesses. Now that being
- 18:40Speaker 5: around for ten years, that's enough that people own some
- 18:42Speaker 5: of their own businesses and are interested in recruiting Bridge
- 18:45Speaker 5: Valley students. So we're pretty excited to have it as
- 18:48Speaker 5: an opportunity for people to really re engage with us
- 18:51Speaker 5: and come back to the community if they want to.
- 18:53Speaker 3: It's hard for me to believe that Bridge Valley has
- 18:55Speaker 3: been around for ten years. In some ways, it seems
- 18:59Speaker 3: like it hasn't been long, But in other ways, it
- 19:01Speaker 3: seems like that it's always been a part of the community.
- 19:04Speaker 3: Does that make any sense.
- 19:05Speaker 5: Well, great, I hope that it feels like we've always.
- 19:07Speaker 3: Been here and that's and again, that's one of the
- 19:09Speaker 3: things that I love about what you folks do out
- 19:11Speaker 3: of Bridge Valley. I mean, again, you're an institution of
- 19:13Speaker 3: higher learning, yes, but do you do a lot of
- 19:16Speaker 3: other things within the community. I know, you just came
- 19:18Speaker 3: off the Pumpkin Drop a couple of weeks ago. That
- 19:20Speaker 3: was a massive success. We had you you know, had
- 19:22Speaker 3: Steve Animal live from there on the mountain. Apologize for that,
- 19:26Speaker 3: but just so many things that you do within the
- 19:29Speaker 3: community that really, in many cases it all ties into
- 19:32Speaker 3: higher education, but sometimes it doesn't. You just do it
- 19:34Speaker 3: because you're here.
- 19:35Speaker 5: Well, we do it because we're here, but because we
- 19:37Speaker 5: really care about the community. Our mission is specifically this region,
- 19:41Speaker 5: and we really want to make sure people are working
- 19:43Speaker 5: in this region and that they see that there's opportunities here,
- 19:46Speaker 5: and we want to make sure that we're the training
- 19:48Speaker 5: provider that you think of when you're like, gosh, I'm
- 19:50Speaker 5: sick of working retail or fast food and what do
- 19:53Speaker 5: I do? Will you come back to Bridge Valley and
- 19:54Speaker 5: get retrained for something else?
- 19:56Speaker 3: Talking to doctor Casey Sacks the Bridge Valley. It's nine
- 19:58Speaker 3: twenty seven The Dave Island Show on five A is Bronch.
- 20:01Speaker 3: You a part by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston
- 20:03Speaker 3: Dirty Bird, Selango Law Light the Night coming to the ballpark,
- 20:05Speaker 3: Gomart Ballpark November twenty first through January first. It'll be
- 20:08Speaker 3: here before you know it. Get your tickets in advance, folks,
- 20:11Speaker 3: it's the best way to do it by checking out
- 20:13Speaker 3: Dblightthnight dot com. You had a family fun night.
- 20:17Speaker 9: Oh it's so fun, well, so you're talking about things
- 20:19Speaker 9: we do in the community.
- 20:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:21Speaker 5: Family Fun Night is our sort of pre Halloween activity.
- 20:25Speaker 5: It's a trunk of tree. We have bounced castles and
- 20:28Speaker 5: activities for little kids and face painting. We had our
- 20:31Speaker 5: biggest turnout ever this year. It was a part partly
- 20:34Speaker 5: because we partnered with WVU Medicine Thomas Hospitals and so
- 20:37Speaker 5: they also did trigger treat for the kids and lots
- 20:40Speaker 5: of the activities. But we had thirty two hundred people
- 20:43Speaker 5: up in South Charleston. Wow, and it was just fantastic,
- 20:47Speaker 5: so fun.
- 20:48Speaker 3: Thirty two hundred people And what sort of activities did
- 20:51Speaker 3: you have there?
- 20:52Speaker 5: Face painting, a bounced castle, pizza, tons of candy, so
- 20:56Speaker 5: so much candy. One of the things that I really
- 20:59Speaker 5: like that we do is we bring out all the
- 21:01Speaker 5: first responders, so South Charleston brings up their fire truck,
- 21:05Speaker 5: we have a police cruiser. We have our own ambulance
- 21:07Speaker 5: that we also do as a mobile classroom, and we
- 21:09Speaker 5: let kids walk through those and run the sirens. And
- 21:13Speaker 5: for especially little kids, they might not be thinking already, gosh,
- 21:17Speaker 5: I want to be a paramedic.
- 21:18Speaker 9: When I grew up.
- 21:19Speaker 5: But sometimes those early exposures can be quite influential, so
- 21:22Speaker 5: we're hoping for that too well.
- 21:24Speaker 3: And what I like about events like that, and I
- 21:26Speaker 3: know the City of Charleston does a great job with
- 21:29Speaker 3: their police department and other municipalities do as well, is
- 21:32Speaker 3: sometimes that kids only see the police, They only see
- 21:37Speaker 3: fire and ambulance EMTs first responders when it's a bad situation.
- 21:41Speaker 3: And I think it's an opportunity for them when it
- 21:44Speaker 3: comes to police to be able to say, hey, they're
- 21:46Speaker 3: not the bad guys. They're trying to help us. But
- 21:48Speaker 3: it also gives them an opportunity to check out, you know,
- 21:51Speaker 3: the cool shiny trucks and things of that nature when
- 21:54Speaker 3: it's not an emergency.
- 21:55Speaker 9: That's great and.
- 21:56Speaker 5: We want to share those things with people and to
- 21:58Speaker 5: get them thinking about, gosh, maybe I would want to
- 22:01Speaker 5: be on the fire crew and how do I do.
- 22:03Speaker 3: That and what kind of activity? What kind of courses
- 22:06Speaker 3: do you have for a kid or an adult for
- 22:08Speaker 3: that matter that may want to go into that sort
- 22:10Speaker 3: of thing.
- 22:10Speaker 5: I mean, I would tell anybody to start with some
- 22:12Speaker 5: of the first responder, basic life support kinds of things.
- 22:16Speaker 5: But we have a full blown paramedic program which is
- 22:18Speaker 5: pretty popular, and that's a good choice because even my husband,
- 22:23Speaker 5: who's retired law enforcement, would say, well you need all
- 22:26Speaker 5: you need all those.
- 22:27Speaker 9: Skills even in law enforcement, and so a lot of it.
- 22:30Speaker 5: And I would tell anybody who I'm doing career counseling
- 22:32Speaker 5: with is figure out where you want to work. You
- 22:34Speaker 5: want to go work at South Charleston Fire, Go ask
- 22:36Speaker 5: them exactly what they require, and then just do.
- 22:38Speaker 9: Those pieces with us.
- 22:40Speaker 5: I wouldn't tell you to do a full blown program
- 22:42Speaker 5: if they don't require it, but if they do require it,
- 22:44Speaker 5: then come do the program with us.
- 22:46Speaker 9: We'd love to have you.
- 22:47Speaker 3: Doctor kcy Saxebridge Valleys here. Let's talk about spring registration.
- 22:50Speaker 5: Oh, it's that time. So if you're thinking, gosh, I
- 22:53Speaker 5: want to change my life and I want to go
- 22:55Speaker 5: be a paramedic, or I want to go work in
- 22:57Speaker 5: manufacturing or it or any version of healthcare, whatever that
- 23:01Speaker 5: looks like for you, it's really the time to come register.
- 23:05Speaker 5: So November eleventh, spring registration opens, which is colleague next
- 23:10Speaker 5: week practically, And that's really thinking ahead for your family
- 23:16Speaker 5: and for your life and what is it that you
- 23:18Speaker 5: want to do different So if even if what you
- 23:21Speaker 5: want is the career counseling.
- 23:22Speaker 9: Come talk to our team so we really can get through. Well,
- 23:25Speaker 9: where should you be studying? What is it that you
- 23:27Speaker 9: might want to go do?
- 23:29Speaker 3: And I want to ask you, of course, all the
- 23:33Speaker 3: news right now is about the partial government shut down,
- 23:36Speaker 3: and you know, sixteen percent of the population of West Virginia,
- 23:40Speaker 3: it's been documented, received some sort of SNAP benefits. Barring
- 23:43Speaker 3: some sort of a miracle come November first, which is tomorrow,
- 23:47Speaker 3: by the way, that's going to go away at least
- 23:49Speaker 3: at least for a while. That's the way it's looking
- 23:51Speaker 3: right now. What's going on out there with Bridge Valley
- 23:54Speaker 3: as it pretends to do.
- 23:55Speaker 5: So we actually we know how many of our students
- 23:58Speaker 5: receive SNAP benefits and it's seventy for We have seventy
- 24:01Speaker 5: four students on campus right now who receives SNAP benefits
- 24:04Speaker 5: and they do win tomorrow. And so we've been We
- 24:07Speaker 5: have a food bank on campus all the time. It's
- 24:09Speaker 5: called the Nest and so we always are looking for
- 24:12Speaker 5: food for the food bank. But you know, we have
- 24:15Speaker 5: high school students who are homeless. We have kids who
- 24:18Speaker 5: have real needs in the community, and this is exactly
- 24:20Speaker 5: who you would want to help. So if you're listening
- 24:22Speaker 5: and feeling even a little bit philanthropic. These are people
- 24:26Speaker 5: who are trying to help themselves. They're in a training
- 24:28Speaker 5: program and they're trying to do better, but they need
- 24:30Speaker 5: a little bit of help. So we're thrilled we can
- 24:32Speaker 5: do that with our food pantry. And we're certainly promoting
- 24:35Speaker 5: the two on one that's coming out of the Governor's
- 24:36Speaker 5: office and trying to get people to call two on
- 24:38Speaker 5: one if they need food help and food support. We
- 24:41Speaker 5: have some great food banks in the community, and I
- 24:43Speaker 5: would encourage people to give to any of those if
- 24:46Speaker 5: you're in a position where you can. But we are
- 24:49Speaker 5: also trying to promote with our other students who aren't
- 24:52Speaker 5: receiving benefits, Hey can you bring in non perishables? Can
- 24:55Speaker 5: you bring in things to help each other? But we
- 24:58Speaker 5: do something called Project Thankful everyday, and we have students
- 25:02Speaker 5: who have families that can't afford Thanksgiving sign up and
- 25:05Speaker 5: so far we've had twenty seven families sign up. And
- 25:08Speaker 5: so these are family keep students but who have little
- 25:12Speaker 5: kids and really thinking through how do we do that.
- 25:16Speaker 5: So my office adopts one family and we'll do the
- 25:19Speaker 5: full spread for Thanksgiving. But it's those kinds of things.
- 25:23Speaker 5: So if you don't know who you know, if you're
- 25:26Speaker 5: feeling again like maybe it's the spirit of giving in
- 25:29Speaker 5: the right season and you want to adopt a family,
- 25:31Speaker 5: we have that option.
- 25:32Speaker 9: For you too.
- 25:33Speaker 3: And if the public wants to get involved in this,
- 25:35Speaker 3: I mean people listen to that. Maybe don't even have
- 25:37Speaker 3: ties to Bridge Valley. What can they do?
- 25:38Speaker 5: We'd love to have your support Bridge Valley dot eedu
- 25:41Speaker 5: And then on the top right navigate up to the
- 25:43Speaker 5: foundation and then we have drop down menus so you
- 25:45Speaker 5: can pick whatever it is you're interested in. So if
- 25:47Speaker 5: it's the food pantry, you can pick the nest food pantry.
- 25:50Speaker 5: If it's Project Thankful, you can select that and adopt
- 25:53Speaker 5: a family and or call us and come out and
- 25:57Speaker 5: we'd love to connect you to students who need some support.
- 26:00Speaker 5: It really does change people's lives, all right.
- 26:03Speaker 3: Remind people where they can check out anything. Hit that
- 26:05Speaker 3: website again repertain.

- 30:05Speaker 3: overall what's this? What's this whole thing about?
- 30:07Speaker 4: So, first off, about seventy five percent of the revenue
- 30:11Speaker 4: for Kanawha County Ambulance comes from PEA, Medicaid, Medicare, and
- 30:16Speaker 4: then there's another portion that is this private pay, third
- 30:21Speaker 4: party reinsurance or third party insurance from companies like Blue Cross,
- 30:25Speaker 4: Blue Shield, Peak.
- 30:27Speaker 3: Health Plan, others.
- 30:29Speaker 4: We've been working with Blue Cross Blue Shield because their
- 30:32Speaker 4: level of reimbursement for the Kanawa County Ambulance Authority was
- 30:36Speaker 4: below PA and generally for third party payers, and we
- 30:42Speaker 4: talked to the folks from the hospitals, it's about one
- 30:44Speaker 4: hundred and thirty one hundred and fifty percent of Medicare,
- 30:47Speaker 4: So we were at Medicare, if not below Medicare for
- 30:50Speaker 4: a portion at the time. There's a cost to operate
- 30:54Speaker 4: the Kanawh County Ambulance Authority. Those costs have to be met.
- 30:59Speaker 4: We're not asking Blue Cross Blue Shield to cover other
- 31:02Speaker 4: people's costs. We're asking them to step up and do
- 31:05Speaker 4: for the people that they cover. So let me give
- 31:07Speaker 4: you an example of the number kind of data point. Okay,
- 31:10Speaker 4: last year, I think for this group of people, and
- 31:12Speaker 4: this would be private pay, third party companies, their self insurance,
- 31:18Speaker 4: their network access. This is not medicare, this is not medicaid.
- 31:21Speaker 4: I think they paid about one point four million or
- 31:24Speaker 4: not paid. We build them about one point four billion.
- 31:27Speaker 4: They paid us about four hundred thousand dollars. Now, if
- 31:29Speaker 4: you had a grocery store and you were charging one
- 31:33Speaker 4: point four million dollars for services, but people only paid
- 31:36Speaker 4: four hundred thousand dollars, you couldn't sustain. We want to
- 31:40Speaker 4: have a sustainable operation. The company had a deficit. They're
- 31:44Speaker 4: working down the deficit. They're doing all types of changes.
- 31:48Speaker 4: They've reduced the employment. They are working to refine the
- 31:53Speaker 4: way they purchased ambulances. Instead of going out and buying
- 31:55Speaker 4: brand new ambulances all the time, they're taking the old
- 31:58Speaker 4: boxes and putting them on new chests. I mean, there
- 32:00Speaker 4: are steps they're taking to better allocate resources. As part
- 32:04Speaker 4: of that, they looked at what people were paying the
- 32:07Speaker 4: authority for services. And we're talking about insurance companies and
- 32:10Speaker 4: Blue Cross Blue Shield was woefully underpaying the authority. We're
- 32:15Speaker 4: not asking for them to get to the one hundred
- 32:18Speaker 4: and fifty level of Medicare, but we'd like to get
- 32:21Speaker 4: something that would help sustain that agency, and that's where
- 32:25Speaker 4: we're working through. The Authority decided that if you're going
- 32:30Speaker 4: to do this, give people sixty day notice. We're in
- 32:32Speaker 4: Medicare open enrollment, so if people wanted to make a
- 32:35Speaker 4: change because of this contract dispute, they have plenty of
- 32:38Speaker 4: time to do it. Employers are generally making benefit decisions
- 32:42Speaker 4: during this period for the coming year. That way, they
- 32:45Speaker 4: were on notice because this will not take effect until
- 32:48Speaker 4: January one. Hopefully we can work this out and come
- 32:51Speaker 4: to some type of resolution, but the authority has a
- 32:58Speaker 4: responsibility to ensure that there is long term sustainability for
- 33:02Speaker 4: the AMLETCE company.
- 33:03Speaker 3: Talking to you with Tom Susman, who's a spokesperson for
- 33:05Speaker 3: the Ambutate Service Authority. Okay, let me give you an example,
- 33:07Speaker 3: because as you and I were talking doing to break,
- 33:09Speaker 3: everybody wants to know what does it mean to me?
- 33:10Speaker 3: And that's okay. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield and
- 33:13Speaker 3: through my through this company w DRC Media metrin Is,
- 33:16Speaker 3: I have Blue Cross Blue Shield. I am Heaven Forbid.
- 33:18Speaker 3: I have a medical emergency okay, uh, car accident, you know,
- 33:22Speaker 3: heart attack, whatever, and it's after this January first, what happens.
- 33:26Speaker 4: Well, hopefully we've come to a resolution, Okay, if we have,
- 33:29Speaker 4: but if we have not, we've not come for a resolution.
- 33:31Speaker 4: And if West Virginia Radio still has Blue Cross Blue Shield,
- 33:34Speaker 4: because I'm sure your plan year is January one, then
- 33:37Speaker 4: what will happen is you'll probably get the bill from
- 33:39Speaker 4: us instead of US building the insurance company, and then
- 33:42Speaker 4: you'll have to submit that to the insurance company to
- 33:44Speaker 4: get paid whatever they'll pay, and then we'll balance bill
- 33:46Speaker 4: you for the difference.
- 33:47Speaker 3: Yeah, as opposed to the insurance you know, just paying
- 33:49Speaker 3: a percentage or whatever. I mean, the bill is going
- 33:51Speaker 3: to come to me and I got to figure out
- 33:53Speaker 3: a way to pay.
- 33:54Speaker 13: And it's not cheap, Tom, and it's not cheap. We
- 33:56Speaker 13: don't do this is this is not something that was done.
- 34:00Speaker 13: That was done the one thing that Blue Cross does,
- 34:02Speaker 13: and we're going to take it to the legislature. So
- 34:04Speaker 13: if we're not contracted with one of the other companies
- 34:07Speaker 13: for emergent care, they will allow you to assign that
- 34:10Speaker 13: benefit to us. So then if we bill them, we'll
- 34:13Speaker 13: get paid. Blue Cross Blue Shield does not do that
- 34:16Speaker 13: for a non contracted emergent provider, and that's not right,
- 34:20Speaker 13: you know, for the scheduled appointments.
- 34:22Speaker 3: I get it.
- 34:23Speaker 4: You made a choice on whether you're getting an in
- 34:26Speaker 4: network or a non network physician, doctor, physical therapist, whatever
- 34:32Speaker 4: for an ambulance. That's not correct. Emergency room is not
- 34:35Speaker 4: correct because emergent care. There should be no discrimination in
- 34:38Speaker 4: terms of payment for mergent care.
- 34:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it makes complete sense to me. And
- 34:43Speaker 3: I know Jeff and the folks in the newsroom did
- 34:45Speaker 3: a news story and they actually talked to a spokesperson
- 34:48Speaker 3: for Blue Cross Blue Shit, because we want to be
- 34:50Speaker 3: fair and get there to get their other side of
- 34:51Speaker 3: it as well. But Dave Island Show on five eighty
- 34:53Speaker 3: Live is brought to you part by Louve Healthy was

- 35:03Speaker 3: Al Right, so we're looking to January first. What happens
- 35:06Speaker 3: between now and January first?
- 35:07Speaker 4: Well, well, we're going to talk internally. We'll reach back
- 35:11Speaker 4: out to Blue Cross to see if they'd like to
- 35:13Speaker 4: sit down and have further discussions. And then for folks
- 35:17Speaker 4: that are looking at medicare advantage or they're looking at
- 35:20Speaker 4: their business insurance, they need to take this into consideration,
- 35:25Speaker 4: you know, when they make their choices.
- 35:27Speaker 3: But we're hopeful that this is going to work out.
- 35:30Speaker 3: This is not the be all end all were there's
- 35:32Speaker 3: ever and there are negotiations going on. As which week discussions.
- 35:36Speaker 4: There were some discussions that are going on, and we're
- 35:39Speaker 4: we hope the next week to can to to restart
- 35:42Speaker 4: these discussions.
- 35:42Speaker 3: All right, Happy Halloween.
- 35:44Speaker 4: Happy Halloween to you.
- 35:46Speaker 3: First, Uh, your favorite candy. First, to your trigger treat candy.
- 35:50Speaker 4: It's the the caramel corn.
- 35:52Speaker 3: Okay, corn, yeah, candy corn. Yeah. You and doctor Sex
- 35:56Speaker 3: said the same thing.
- 35:56Speaker 4: Well, then when I was a kid, I used to
- 35:58Speaker 4: play like I had vampirety.
- 36:00Speaker 3: Well you don't do that anymore. To please tell me
- 36:02Speaker 3: you don't still do that.
- 36:03Speaker 4: I will never ever disclose this on the grounds that
- 36:07Speaker 4: it may incriminate me for future radio interviews.
- 36:09Speaker 3: All Right, Tom, I appreciate you coming in, and you
- 36:12Speaker 3: came in on short notice because again, this story just
- 36:15Speaker 3: broke yesterday and I know Jeffetable. Folks did an interview
- 36:18Speaker 3: with you, but I wanted to have you come in
- 36:19Speaker 3: to kind of break it down to people because again,
- 36:21Speaker 3: because you well know, people want to know, how does
- 36:23Speaker 3: this impact me? That's what people want to know.
- 36:25Speaker 4: And that's why we wanted to be sure and give
- 36:27Speaker 4: plenty of notice so that if folks did want to
- 36:29Speaker 4: make a plan change, they could make a plan.
- 36:30Speaker 3: All right, and I'll give you like the final thirty
- 36:32Speaker 3: seconds to speak. I may have the ambulance services ory.
- 36:35Speaker 3: What do you want the people to know?
- 36:37Speaker 4: One is that regardless of your ability to pay, we
- 36:41Speaker 4: will continue to serve you were Emergent Care twenty four

- 40:08Speaker 3: General Construction studios. Good morning, sir, welcome to the show.
- 40:12Speaker 18: Congratulations, thank you, thank you great to be here today
- 40:15Speaker 18: in the studio, and thanks.
- 40:16Speaker 3: For having me explain the district.
- 40:18Speaker 18: Yeah, so, I mean the you know, we we every
- 40:21Speaker 18: ten years we redistrict in the state of West Virginia.
- 40:25Speaker 18: And uh, you know, we used to the old the
- 40:28Speaker 18: old seventh Senatorial District used to be parts of Mingo,
- 40:31Speaker 18: parts of Wayne, Lincoln, Logan, and Boom. And with the
- 40:35Speaker 18: population loss and you know, these districts down south are
- 40:38Speaker 18: getting they're getting a little bit bigger. But the district's Lincoln,
- 40:41Speaker 18: All Lincoln, All Logan, All Boom, and parts of eastern
- 40:46Speaker 18: Kanall County and what I would say this Saint Auban
- 40:49Speaker 18: side to the Tornado side of Conall County. So I
- 40:52Speaker 18: explained that as the big ben region.
- 40:54Speaker 14: Good.
- 40:55Speaker 18: Yeah, because I'm a frequent golfer there, so so yeah, so.
- 41:00Speaker 3: How's your golf game? Oh man?
- 41:01Speaker 18: You know it's slowly coming along with some well, you know,
- 41:04Speaker 18: I had a golfer tell me it's kind of like
- 41:06Speaker 18: fine wine, it gets better with age.
- 41:08Speaker 1: So I'm hoping.
- 41:09Speaker 3: I'm hoping. So I needed TJ. Meadows is ours our
- 41:12Speaker 3: resident golfer here. So you'll have to meet TJ. He'll
- 41:15Speaker 3: come in after you and you can talk about him.
- 41:17Speaker 3: You guys can talk golf, all right, So talk about
- 41:19Speaker 3: the the appointment. There were three people, and I guess
- 41:21Speaker 3: the Executive Committee puts forth three names. Talk about how
- 41:25Speaker 3: that processes.
- 41:25Speaker 18: Yeah, I mean we're very fortunate in the Republican Party
- 41:29Speaker 18: to have such great candidates. I mean we had ex
- 41:33Speaker 18: ceo coal coal mine owners, uh, co operators. Uh, we
- 41:38Speaker 18: had you know, Vice Presidence of the Coal Association.
- 41:42Speaker 3: I mean some.
- 41:43Speaker 18: Really just great people. And then you know the three
- 41:45Speaker 18: names that got picked. Monica Booth just a great person,
- 41:49Speaker 18: does really good with uh, you know, domestic violence and
- 41:52Speaker 18: stuff and and and and really you know, puts uh
- 41:56Speaker 18: puts effort in that. And then we had dust More,
- 41:59Speaker 18: who's who's a great I worked with Mike Stewart, you know.
- 42:02Speaker 18: So we had really good candidates, and you know, the
- 42:05Speaker 18: committee uh took took their time and peaked three names,
- 42:08Speaker 18: and those names went to the governor.
- 42:10Speaker 3: And and of course you're a former member of the House. Yeah,
- 42:13Speaker 3: so some people will start in the House and go
- 42:16Speaker 3: to the Senate. Some people will start, you know, just
- 42:18Speaker 3: in the Senate. What what do you think having been
- 42:21Speaker 3: a delegate lends to this new role? What kind of
- 42:25Speaker 3: talk about your experience?
- 42:26Speaker 18: Yes, so, I mean one is the is the process?
- 42:28Speaker 18: I don't think you know, you you get well one,
- 42:32Speaker 18: there's one hundred people in this in the House and
- 42:35Speaker 18: thirty four in the Senate. But you know, I think
- 42:38Speaker 18: the is you know, how how you get a bill,
- 42:40Speaker 18: how do you get the stakeholders, you know, how do
- 42:43Speaker 18: you get people around a certain legislation to pass it?
- 42:47Speaker 18: Understanding how to do constituent services. I think that's the
- 42:50Speaker 18: biggest thing when it comes to a lot of this stuff.
- 42:52Speaker 18: But also, you know, what I've realized too is a
- 42:54Speaker 18: lot of the people that I served with that were
- 42:57Speaker 18: delegates are now senators, you know, So it's uh, it's
- 43:00Speaker 18: good to see familiar faces. But I think as there
- 43:03Speaker 18: is an overlap, you know, I guess I'm gonna have
- 43:06Speaker 18: an assistant that's going to be able to you know,
- 43:08Speaker 18: send some emails, take some phone calls, and in the House,
- 43:12Speaker 18: you do all that by yourself, you know, if you know,
- 43:14Speaker 18: or we share one, five or six of us shared one, right,
- 43:18Speaker 18: so I mean, but also you know we have one
- 43:22Speaker 18: hundred you know, we have a lot of Republicans over
- 43:25Speaker 18: on the House, and we have a lot in the
- 43:26Speaker 18: Senate to where you know, those responsibilities were spread out.
- 43:31Speaker 18: You know, you still have to have the same committee
- 43:32Speaker 18: meetings and the Senate and that stuff. So but it
- 43:35Speaker 18: gets me prepared because I've ran a campaign. You know,
- 43:37Speaker 18: I've I've I've done the constituent service I've I've I've
- 43:41Speaker 18: done you know, the hard votes and the and the
- 43:43Speaker 18: things that is needed to be productive at this job.
- 43:47Speaker 3: Sorry about talking to you. Zach Maynard, who is the
- 43:49Speaker 3: new state senator out of District seven. So, what's the
- 43:52Speaker 3: process look like when you're actually sworn in because you're
- 43:54Speaker 3: not technically the senator. You got the appointment, but you've
- 43:56Speaker 3: not been sworn in anything.
- 43:57Speaker 18: Yeah, So Wednesday at noon, I'm going to be sworn in,
- 44:00Speaker 18: So you know, gonna get the family up for that,
- 44:03Speaker 18: friends and stuff and do that. So you know the
- 44:06Speaker 18: process is just you know, getting getting the judge. I'm
- 44:10Speaker 18: Stacy Eldridge is gonna be Judge Eldridge is going to
- 44:14Speaker 18: be the one swearing me in on Wednesday. So we're
- 44:16Speaker 18: just really excited to get started.
- 44:18Speaker 3: Speaking of family, you got to throw something out there.
- 44:21Speaker 18: Yeah, I just yeah, my wife, she turns twenty one today.
- 44:25Speaker 18: Oh okay, no, she's turns thirty three. And uh she's
- 44:30Speaker 18: my high school sweetheart, love of my life, and we
- 44:32Speaker 18: have three we have two beautiful little girls at home,
- 44:35Speaker 18: and I'd just like to wish her a happy birthday.
- 44:38Speaker 3: I was gonna see you told me that out there,
- 44:39Speaker 3: I said, but you had to get that in because
- 44:42Speaker 3: nothing else matters, you know, nothing else matters. It's eight

- 45:15Speaker 3: got Kanawa, and I mean, and I talked about this
- 45:18Speaker 3: with a political figure I have on In some ways,
- 45:21Speaker 3: there's a lot of similarities, but in some ways there's
- 45:24Speaker 3: a lot of differences, and that's a lot of ground
- 45:26Speaker 3: to cover.
- 45:27Speaker 18: No, I mean, look, I think you might have been
- 45:30Speaker 18: my constituent in my old district of when I was
- 45:32Speaker 18: a delegate Lincoln, Logan, Boom, and Putnam. You're talking about
- 45:35Speaker 18: Chaptonville to Hurricane.
- 45:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:37Speaker 18: Right, So it's the same type of layout for me.
- 45:40Speaker 18: But you know, one thing we do have in common
- 45:43Speaker 18: is that we are cold country. A lot of that
- 45:45Speaker 18: is cold country, eastern Kenall County, Marmett to Montgomery. You know,
- 45:50Speaker 18: it doesn't really change from you know, Pexmeal to the Hearts.
- 45:54Speaker 18: You know, it's it's kind of the same, we're kind
- 45:56Speaker 18: of the same people, same area. It's southern West Virginia.
- 45:59Speaker 18: But it is a bit district and you know, for me,
- 46:01Speaker 18: I'll have to get out beat on those doors in
- 46:04Speaker 18: eastern Kennall County the same I'll do in Man, West Virginia.
- 46:07Speaker 18: So I'm excited to serve those people. But there is differences.
- 46:11Speaker 18: I mean, I mean that you know, you have alam
- 46:14Speaker 18: Creek and that area.
- 46:16Speaker 3: So that's where that's where our producers from. That's why
- 46:18Speaker 3: that that big noise you heard in there, that was
- 46:20Speaker 3: from staff of the air producer.
- 46:21Speaker 18: She's a alam Aldam creeker. Yeah creek, but no for
- 46:24Speaker 18: all all. I mean, just to look at the district.
- 46:27Speaker 18: I think it's set up a great a great way.
- 46:29Speaker 18: People have a lot of similarities and now I'm excited
- 46:33Speaker 18: to get out and work for them.
- 46:35Speaker 3: And what do you want people to know about you
- 46:38Speaker 3: that don't know you? Because I mean, again, you were
- 46:40Speaker 3: in the house, but I mean for some of these people,
- 46:42Speaker 3: you're you're brand new to them. So give us a
- 46:44Speaker 3: little bit of your your background. I mean, uh, you
- 46:47Speaker 3: know what legend. We know you're a former uh delegate,
- 46:50Speaker 3: But there's more to Zach Mander than just that. So
- 46:52Speaker 3: give us your background. Yeah.
- 46:53Speaker 18: So, I mean I grew up in Heart's, West Virginia
- 46:55Speaker 18: where I live now. I haven't you know, very I
- 46:57Speaker 18: have uh you know, I went down a couple couple uh, well,
- 47:02Speaker 18: went down the road to where I was raised at.
- 47:05Speaker 18: But no, I went to Chaptanville High School on a
- 47:07Speaker 18: state championship there. I always like to throw that in
- 47:09Speaker 18: for the for everybody.
- 47:11Speaker 3: Game tonight for Chapmanville Big game.
- 47:13Speaker 18: So but no, I mean was a Tiger. And then
- 47:16Speaker 18: you know, went on to West Virginia Tech and played
- 47:19Speaker 18: some baseball there and got my degree there. But you know,
- 47:23Speaker 18: then I started a business, you know, started multiple businesses,
- 47:26Speaker 18: and I'm a businessman and and just loved being an
- 47:29Speaker 18: entrepreneur and hiring people and trying to you know, create something.
- 47:34Speaker 18: But no, I think, you know, looking at this district,
- 47:37Speaker 18: it's it's made for It's made for somebody like me.
- 47:41Speaker 3: I mean it.
- 47:42Speaker 18: I'm from Lincoln County. I graduated from Logan County, shop
- 47:46Speaker 18: at Logan County, you know, pay my taxes in Lincoln County,
- 47:51Speaker 18: banking Boom County. You know, I have a lot of
- 47:53Speaker 18: friends in Boom County, and I graduate. I was one
- 47:55Speaker 18: of the last classes at West Virginia Tech.
- 47:57Speaker 3: So I know that Eastern.
- 47:58Speaker 18: Commons side and you can find me in the summer
- 48:01Speaker 18: probably once every two weeks at Big Ben. So you know,
- 48:04Speaker 18: I feel like I really have an understanding of if
- 48:07Speaker 18: you call me and you say, hey, I'm here and
- 48:09Speaker 18: I need to drink or I need help, I can
- 48:12Speaker 18: kind of put that piece together geographically where you're at.
- 48:15Speaker 18: But no, I'm I and you know, you know, I
- 48:19Speaker 18: think people the one thing I would want to say.
- 48:21Speaker 18: You know, I'm a social conservative, god family country. So
- 48:25Speaker 18: I think that's a big deal where we come from.
- 48:28Speaker 3: What's what are you excited to get to work on?
- 48:30Speaker 3: Because West Virginia is doing well in many areas, but
- 48:33Speaker 3: we got we got some struggles. We've got to get
- 48:35Speaker 3: people here, you know. I mean that's a big problem,
- 48:37Speaker 3: especially in the area that you are from and where
- 48:40Speaker 3: you currently reside. I mean, what are you excited to
- 48:43Speaker 3: get to work on?
- 48:43Speaker 18: Yeah, you know, when when I was alleged, when I
- 48:45Speaker 18: first came in as a delegate, you know, we we
- 48:48Speaker 18: had financial pains for the state. We were in a hole,
- 48:52Speaker 18: and then we went on this great run. I mean,
- 48:56Speaker 18: you know, with a former governor Justice and the things
- 48:59Speaker 18: that we were able to accomplished, and and you know,
- 49:01Speaker 18: working with Roger of Speaker Hanshaw and and the Senate
- 49:05Speaker 18: presidents that were there. You know, we really I think
- 49:08Speaker 18: we financially really took a took the state on the
- 49:12Speaker 18: right path. And I think moving forward, you know, we're
- 49:16Speaker 18: gonna have to do the same, but we're also gonna
- 49:17Speaker 18: have to fix some liability issues that we have. For
- 49:20Speaker 18: me personally, what I would like to work on. You know,
- 49:22Speaker 18: I'm a vocational guy. I think that. You know, I've
- 49:25Speaker 18: always heard stories from my I was raised by my grandparents,
- 49:28Speaker 18: and you know, one of the things they always said,
- 49:30Speaker 18: you know, when they left West Virginia to go find
- 49:33Speaker 18: work out of town, it was one of those things
- 49:36Speaker 18: to where if you was from West Virginia, you got
- 49:39Speaker 18: hired automatically, automatical because your work ethics. So I think,
- 49:42Speaker 18: you know, we're looking at now you can you know,
- 49:45Speaker 18: one of the things about like in Logan County, and
- 49:47Speaker 18: I think in Boom County too, and maybe Kennall County
- 49:49Speaker 18: or in Lincoln County, maybe all of them. But now
- 49:52Speaker 18: you have seniors that are graduating with associate's degrees. You know,
- 49:56Speaker 18: they're able to go to Southern Community College for the
- 50:00Speaker 18: last couple of years of high school and then graduate
- 50:03Speaker 18: with an associate's degree. I would like to elaborate on that. Yeah,
- 50:06Speaker 18: I would like for us to have ninth and tenth
- 50:09Speaker 18: graders to be able to enroll in vocational school. If
- 50:12Speaker 18: you know, blue collar, if you want to go work
- 50:15Speaker 18: and be a plumber, be an HVC, be electrician, do
- 50:20Speaker 18: those types of jobs. If that's really what you want
- 50:23Speaker 18: to do at a young age, we shouldn't stop you.
- 50:25Speaker 3: And I think if most kids know that, yeah, I
- 50:27Speaker 3: mean or not everybody does that knows that, Zach. But
- 50:30Speaker 3: I think most kids, going back to my experience one
- 50:32Speaker 3: hundred years ago, I knew what time I was in
- 50:35Speaker 3: fifth or sixth grade what I wanted to do, and
- 50:37Speaker 3: they man know exactly. But they know that they're good
- 50:40Speaker 3: with their hands, they know what they're crafty that way.
- 50:42Speaker 18: Yeah, they know that they like to work with their
- 50:44Speaker 18: dad in the backyard and like to work with Grandpaul,
- 50:46Speaker 18: you know, and do those things. But my you know,
- 50:48Speaker 18: my biggest thing is I went to vocational school and
- 50:51Speaker 18: I went to a four year college and got a degree.
- 50:53Speaker 18: It doesn't stop you from doing that. But I think,
- 50:55Speaker 18: you know, we asked general. We go and go throughout America,
- 50:59Speaker 18: the generationations, and we think that you know, eighteen year
- 51:02Speaker 18: old's not you know, we call them a kid now.
- 51:05Speaker 18: You know, forty years fifty years ago, we were sending
- 51:07Speaker 18: them on planes to fight in wars. Right, So I
- 51:10Speaker 18: think we need to give more responsibility to the youth
- 51:13Speaker 18: and get them ready to go in the workforce. So
- 51:15Speaker 18: I would like to set up programs or set up
- 51:18Speaker 18: you know, some legislation that works with that works with
- 51:22Speaker 18: kind of you know that works with kind of the
- 51:27Speaker 18: trade schools and the community colleges, because if you look
- 51:29Speaker 18: at the community college, as Dave, we're set up to
- 51:32Speaker 18: do those things, to give those certain certifications and get
- 51:36Speaker 18: these folks going in the workforce.
- 51:38Speaker 3: That congratulations. We've got to cut it short, but I
- 51:40Speaker 3: appreciate you taking time. You already scheduled to be here.
- 51:44Speaker 3: We've got Meadows and Wilson in here. Meadows. Zach is
- 51:48Speaker 3: a golfer as well, So you guys got stuff to
- 51:49Speaker 3: talk about here. Somen I mean, can you give him
- 51:53Speaker 3: any tips? By the way, I'm gonna throw you something
- 51:55Speaker 3: out here. I had a text here that said, you
- 51:57Speaker 3: told your first lie, you play somebody played Gramble with
- 52:00Speaker 3: you and Josh Barker and you got smoked.
- 52:03Speaker 18: That's that's probably true. Do you want to Josh is
- 52:05Speaker 18: not very well versed and it's a biolf.
- 52:07Speaker 3: Games so that I mean that was from our good
- 52:09Speaker 3: friend Brasle It was. It wasn't a scramble. That was
- 52:12Speaker 3: our good friend Brad's story. Who set that in?
- 52:14Speaker 7: Now?
- 52:14Speaker 3: Just say set that to my personal phone? All right,
- 52:17Speaker 3: you guys, give me ten seconds what you got on
- 52:18Speaker 3: the show today? Steam release? All right, eleven thirty three Meadows.
- 52:22Speaker 3: We'll talk to the Roan County Superintendent at ten oh
- 52:24Speaker 3: six on consolidation.
- 52:25Speaker 17: Right.
- 52:26Speaker 3: I'll be back later day with Metro News midday. Happy
- 52:28Speaker 3: Halloween folks. I will see you later on midday. Till then,
- 52:32Speaker 3: have fun and love somebody
