- 0:00Welcome back to Healthy, Happy, Wise, Wealthy. I have with me today on this Thanksgiving
- 0:04episode, my Andre. So I'm already traveling for
- 0:07Thanksgiving. And Andre, what's one of your favorite
- 0:11memories of Thanksgiving? So we were here, and basically
- 0:15I. We had some M and M cake, and I threw it at my
- 0:19Uncle Jason's face. That's my favorite memory.
- 0:23If I would have seen that, I think that would also be my favorite Thanksgiving
- 0:26memory, because I don't know that I remember seeing that, but I remember that.
- 0:30I think it was three years ago here at my brother's house. And
- 0:34there's a lot of. Lot, A lot, a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot,
- 0:36a lot, a lot of people. Yeah. Yeah. When we come here so. And get
- 0:40together today, on today's episode,
- 0:43we are actually going to have Jolyn Armstrong, and she is an episode
- 0:47four and five, and she's going to give us a little talk
- 0:51about sometimes the holidays aren't always the most
- 0:55fun because we have memories that maybe make us sad. And there's all
- 0:59kind of stuff does come up during holidays. So we want you to have a
- 1:02time where you can enjoy the beautiful things in life, but
- 1:06also just recognize that there is some things that are. That are hard.
- 1:10And we're going to be grateful. Yeah. Very, very, very
- 1:13grateful. Very grateful. I'm grateful for you. What are you grateful for? You
- 1:17better say me. I'm just kidding. My life.
- 1:21My life and my family. Your life and your family?
- 1:24Yeah. I love that. I am also grateful for this.
- 1:28Have family spread all over the country. So the chance to get together
- 1:32and see people is a beautiful thing that I very much
- 1:36enjoy. Yeah. So we hope you guys have
- 1:39a wonderful, fun, happy,
- 1:43happy Thanksgiving. Safe travel.
- 1:47Plenty of turkey. Yep. Not too much turkey, though. Not too much. Not.
- 1:50Not too much turkey. That's right. And enjoy all the.
- 1:54All the good times that are to be had this Thanksgiving.
- 1:59Bye.
- 2:03Hi, everyone. I'm Jolyn, and I'm grateful to spend
- 2:07a few minutes with you today. I want to extend my appreciation
- 2:11to Mary also for extending the invitation. I appreciate
- 2:15you, Mary. And since this is a Thanksgiving
- 2:18message, I want to begin by acknowledging something important.
- 2:22The holidays are big, Right. They come with a lot of energy
- 2:26and a lot of expectations and a lot of
- 2:29emotions and sometimes all at once. Right.
- 2:35I think about the holiday season that we're told
- 2:38should happen. Right. Every year around this time,
- 2:42the world starts painting pictures for us.
- 2:46Photos of families in matching pajamas and commercials
- 2:49where everyone is laughing, cooking together
- 2:53somehow. No. Is arguing about politics or doing the
- 2:56Dishes. Right. Perfectly decorated homes,
- 3:00perfectly warm relationships, perfectly prepared
- 3:04food coming out of the oven at the exact right
- 3:07moment. Right. We get movies and ads
- 3:11and Instagram posts and greeting cards all
- 3:14suggesting that the right holiday season looks like
- 3:18joy and togetherness and abundance and energy and
- 3:22cheer and emotional harmony. And it's a beautiful
- 3:26picture, but it's not real
- 3:29for most people. Right. And even when it is, when
- 3:33it is beautiful, it's rarely
- 3:36effortless. It's rarely how it appears. Right.
- 3:40For many people, holiday season brings a mix of
- 3:43emotions because life doesn't pause for November
- 3:47and December. Right. We're often still carrying
- 3:51fatigue and stress and health challenges and financial pressures
- 3:55and relationship tension, complicated family
- 3:58dynamics and loneliness. Right. Or simply
- 4:02exhaustion from an entire year behind us.
- 4:06Some of us are caring for aging parents, too. Yeah.
- 4:10Some of us are juggling work deadlines, some are
- 4:14trying to coordinate travel, house cleaning, meals,
- 4:18children, events, school breaks, all of
- 4:22those things. Some of us are dealing with blended
- 4:25families or estranged relationships. Some are
- 4:29navigating loss, change, or just feeling off
- 4:33this year. So any. Any of that sound familiar to you? Does it fit?
- 4:38All of this happens in the same season where we're
- 4:41told to be merry, you know, make everything
- 4:45special and show up with a smile.
- 4:49Yeah. It's a lot of pressure, a lot of pressure on the
- 4:53human heart. And if we're honest, it can create a
- 4:56kind of inner tension. Right. But
- 5:00truly, what if the holidays don't feel the way
- 5:04they're supposed to feel? What if our energy doesn't match
- 5:08the season? What if traditions don't
- 5:11fit anymore? What if we're growing or changing in ways that
- 5:15make old patterns really feel uncomfortable?
- 5:20These are normal questions, and they deserve
- 5:23real answers. Right. The truth is, most people go
- 5:27into the holidays carrying something invisible.
- 5:31And because we've all been conditioned to perform in
- 5:34a certain version of the season, many of us never talk about it.
- 5:39Right. We just carry it behind the scenes while
- 5:42trying to keep up with traditions, expectations,
- 5:46cultural pressure. Yeah.
- 5:50I lost my father a couple of years ago after a
- 5:53battle with dementia. But I'll always remember a
- 5:57conversation that I had with him that was happened when
- 6:00I was a very young adult. I was, I don't know, maybe 20, something like
- 6:04that. And growing up in Colorado,
- 6:08I had had enough of cold, enough of winter.
- 6:12And one December, I told my dad, you know, the.
- 6:16The only good thing about winter is
- 6:20Christmas. And then forget it. I hate the rest of it. And my dad's
- 6:24reply, it was so. It hits different now than it did
- 6:27then. Then it was. I Kind of laughed at it, but
- 6:31now it makes sense. His response was,
- 6:35you know, don't worry. With time, you'll hate Christmas too.
- 6:39He said that as a father of six and the
- 6:43grandfather of probably a lot more, I think 10,
- 6:46maybe grandchildren, right? And the pressure on him was enormous.
- 6:50And what I took as a joke back then, I see now, with a little
- 6:54bit of maturity of my own behind me,
- 6:58that he was feeling it. He was feeling that pressure.
- 7:02So if you're feeling any of this, you know, overwhelmed,
- 7:06tired, pressured, conflicted, sad,
- 7:10hopeful, grateful or lonely or simply different than
- 7:14you used to, you're not alone. You're not doing it
- 7:17wrong. You're simply human. In a season that
- 7:21asks a lot of us. So here's the good news.
- 7:25You have more agency in this season than you might realize, right?
- 7:29You get to shape the holidays around your current life,
- 7:33your current energy and capacity without
- 7:37dishonoring anyone and without abandoning what's actually
- 7:41meaningful to you. So let's look at
- 7:45what that can actually mean, what that might actually look like,
- 7:48okay? My hope for you is that this can be the
- 7:51year that the holidays get to be what you need them to
- 7:55be, regardless of societal expectations, right?
- 8:01What this means is it means letting your holidays evolve with
- 8:05your life. That's all. Many of our traditions were created
- 8:09long before we ever had a say in them,
- 8:13right? Maybe long before our parents ever had to say in them either, if
- 8:17we think about that, right? Some traditions still feel nourishing
- 8:21and some feel heavy, right? And some feel
- 8:24irrelevant now. Some simply need small
- 8:28adjustments to fit the life that we're living today. So
- 8:32you're allowed to adapt. You're allowed to say, this year I
- 8:36need something a little different. You're allowed to modify the rhythm
- 8:39without apologizing for being human, right?
- 8:43This season, where many of us try to push ourselves into roles and
- 8:47emotions, and we're actually not feeling.
- 8:51What if the approach to the holidays. What if we approach the holidays with
- 8:55a little more gentleness and less performance,
- 8:59right? So let's make some room for what you're
- 9:03carrying, whether, you know, whatever it is that you're
- 9:06navigating this year. Let's. Let's make some room for
- 9:10that. If you're. If you're experiencing a recent
- 9:13loss in your life, a major life change, complicated
- 9:17relationships, all those things you have, you. You don't have
- 9:21to power through in silence anymore.
- 9:25Nothing you're feeling disqualifies you from having a meaningful
- 9:28holiday, right? Just means you might need a little
- 9:32different kind of holiday this year, right? Maybe It's a year
- 9:36of quiet connection instead of huge gatherings. Maybe
- 9:40it's a year of curiosity and trying one
- 9:43new tradition. Maybe it's a year of leaning into
- 9:47community if you need more
- 9:51connection around you. Right? With the people that actually support you and
- 9:55love you. Maybe it's a year of stepping back and
- 9:59breathing a little bit more. Maybe this is a year of making
- 10:02space for mixed emotions. There's no wrong way to be
- 10:06human during the holidays, right?
- 10:10So let's talk about honoring traditions without losing
- 10:14yourself. How do we do that? Right? You can show up
- 10:18for the people that you care about while honoring your own limits.
- 10:21The helpful. A helpful mindset is I can still
- 10:25participate just in a way that respects my energy.
- 10:29Right? So this might look like
- 10:33attending gatherings, but leaving early,
- 10:36bringing a friend or a supportive person instead of showing up on your own.
- 10:41Taking breaks during gatherings as as long as
- 10:44those breaks need to be, right? Stepping outside for a
- 10:48moment or engaging in the parts that feel nourishing
- 10:52while quietly skipping the parts that don't. Right?
- 10:55I'll come for dinner. I'm not doing the white elephant
- 10:59after something like that. Or maybe I'm skipping dinner and just coming for
- 11:03the gift exchange something, Right?
- 11:07It may be time for you to opt for simple instead of elaborate.
- 11:11Or honesty instead of pretending.
- 11:15Yeah. This isn't disrespect again. This is
- 11:19thoughtful boundary setting. It's honoring both your loved ones
- 11:22and yourself. Right?
- 11:26Connection doesn't have to look like a full table or an
- 11:30all day celebration. Sometimes holiday
- 11:33connection is just a slow walk with someone that you
- 11:37trust. A good conversation, even if that
- 11:40conversation is on the phone or on a video call, something like that.
- 11:44A text exchange that makes you smile, Right?
- 11:48Maybe it's volunteering or helping someone else
- 11:52to the extent that you feel comfortable doing that. Being
- 11:56with people without performing is the thing, Right?
- 12:00It's creating one meaningful moment instead of a dozen
- 12:04big but pressure filled moments.
- 12:08Small, genuine moments count here.
- 12:13Yeah. So let's talk about holiday spirit
- 12:17while we're in this subject. Holiday spirit isn't about matching
- 12:20the energy of the commercials or the movies.
- 12:24It's about something much simpler. Right? Let's. Let's
- 12:28really adopt a simpler version of holiday spirit
- 12:32here, right? It's about being present.
- 12:35It's about being gentle with yourself.
- 12:39Being open to moments of meaning. Right? Being honest
- 12:43about where you are this year, what happened this year, what you've
- 12:46been going through. You get to decide what presence looks
- 12:50like, you get to decide what connection looks like.
- 12:54And you get to decide what celebration Looks like this year
- 12:58and every year going forward, you get to shape
- 13:02the season in a way that reflects your actual life,
- 13:06not some idealized version of it or someone
- 13:09else's version of what a life should look like in this season.
- 13:15As we enter this holiday season, here's my wish for
- 13:19you. May you feel free to let
- 13:22this season be what you need it to be. May you
- 13:26feel grounded, steady, and supported.
- 13:31May you honor what has changed without forcing what no
- 13:34longer fits. May you discover new
- 13:38meaning in small, unexpected moments.
- 13:42May you nourish your connections in ways that feel honest and possible.
- 13:47And may this be a season that means
- 13:50exactly what you need it to mean and meets you
- 13:54exactly where you are. This is me wishing
- 13:58you a warm, gentle, and deeply
- 14:02human holiday season. What
- 14:05are you grateful for that you enjoy in life? Sports. I like to play
- 14:09sports. That's a good thing to be grateful for. And traveling
- 14:13well, to travel. What is your favorite place you've traveled to?
- 14:17Moldova. Moldova. Yeah. So his.
- 14:21His Mama is from Moldova. We adopted a bunch
- 14:25of kids 17 years ago.
- 14:2918. 18 years. Thank you. 18 years ago.
- 14:34You weren't around then. Yeah. No, you weren't. So
- 14:38that was seven years before I was. Wow. Only
- 14:41seven years before I was born. Yeah. And Your Mama was 14 when
- 14:45she got here, so. Yeah. So are you gonna teach me how to play
- 14:49sixes? We're gonna let your mom teach
- 14:53me. Yeah, she won't get on
- 14:56the camera. Yeah, she's over there talking in
- 15:01Romanian. Yeah, she won't get on the camera for some reason. Okay, what
- 15:04questions you guys have? So this is Mariana
- 15:08and Andre. Yep. Oh, my gosh. I know that guy. You do
- 15:12not. I don't know that guy. Oh, I know her too.
- 15:16I said I don't know you. Oh, I don't know her.
- 15:20Hey, everybody. We are at Thanksgiving, so. And enjoying our
- 15:24Thanksgiving break. It's just starting here at my brother's house.
- 15:27And, Mariana, what is something
- 15:31you're grateful for this Thanksgiving for? A memory.
- 15:34Okay, A memory. What I'm thankful for
- 15:38or what you're thankful for? Definitely thankful for my life. That's for
- 15:42sure. I'm definitely thankful for my son.
- 15:45He's changed my life in so many good ways.
- 15:50He's such a cutie By the way, this is my son, so I do know
- 15:53him. He just came in my brain.
- 15:57I'm thankful for my friends, for my life.
- 16:02I don't have any friends, but I'm thankful for the ones that I have.
- 16:06My imaginary friends. I'm thankful for my
- 16:09imaginary friends too. And the real ones. Both of them. I'm actually thankful for
- 16:13both. It's just family. I'm thankful for my friends too. And our family is so
- 16:16spread out around the country. So I'm thankful when we can see each other. So
- 16:20that's also really, really cool. Tennessee over here.
- 16:23Yeah, same. You live in Tennessee too? Oh my
- 16:27goodness. I didn't know that. Who knew?
- 16:31I thought I lived in North Carolina, actually. I actually lived in
- 16:35Australia. That's a pretty good accent, actually.
- 16:38That's funny. Do you remember when you got here? What? We ate a lot from
- 16:42Moldova. You gotta keep your face in here.
- 16:45Fruits and vegetables. We had so many carrots.
- 16:50You remember those big bags? Yeah. I would buy. I would buy.
- 16:54Go ahead. I was going to say people would ask you if you had horses.
- 16:58They would, all the time. I go to a local grocery
- 17:02store and there was a lot of horse farms around. And
- 17:05then so I buy this 10 pound bag of carrots and 10 pound bag of
- 17:09apples and they'd ask me if I had horses. And I'm like, no, I have
- 17:12Moldovan children. That was
- 17:16a good memory. You know, that's some fun stuff. Big old bowl of
- 17:19fruit. That would be gone like instantly.
- 17:23Yeah. So when they first got here, they love fruit. So we'd fill this
- 17:26massive bowl up with fruit and just let them eat. So
- 17:31they knew that there was always going to be food available when they were hungry.
- 17:35So I think you guys, I had to cut it off after a while cuz
- 17:38it was averaging 50 pieces of fruit a day.
- 17:43Yep. Well, right now the food's so expensive. I don't know if you could afford
- 17:46that big old bowl. But back then. Oh, I couldn't afford the bowl then either.
- 17:49Like that was. Sorry, that was a lot. That's why. But that was a
- 17:53day. What? And then we kind of cut it down to. Yeah,
- 17:57a few more and I'm like, okay, just one apple, one orange, one banana
- 18:01a day. We won't eat four of each. But
- 18:05yeah, it was, it was good. I mean, you know, that's healthy. It's not.
- 18:08It's not like candy. It's not like a bowl of candy. It's a bowl of
- 18:11fruit. Nature's candy. Healthier
- 18:16And now I get to do eat whatever I want. And it's still not candy,
- 18:19guys. Still not candy. No candy. Yeah.
- 18:23Yeah. Even though he doesn't like any food. Still like that. He likes
- 18:27what food? Watermelon. Honeycomb. What's it called? Like
- 18:31honey. Honeydew. No. Bananas. No. Grapes. No.
- 18:34Strawberries. I like grapes. I don't like strawberries. Okay. It's
- 18:38for the camera, you say? Yes. Real. Okay, well, I. I like grapes.
- 18:42Okay. I'm going to have to buy him some grapes. We'll
- 18:46try it out tonight. You keep kicking my camera.
- 18:52Keep your feet to yourself, young man. That goes for all of you out
- 18:55there, too. Keep your hands and your feet to. Yourself,
- 18:59cuz, for everyone. That's right. Keep your hands and your feet to yourself. And
- 19:03Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Bye.
