- 2:06uh chained and Who's who at least headquarters Captain Nelson? All right, thank
- 2:16you, doctor. Let's file your report with starting a brand. Well there
- 2:23you are coming nothing to it, Doctor Armstrong just reported, But Beth was
- 2:25due to exposure, and I was try to get in an old hand of
- 2:29the game. Cap that third you found a national pocketing die of exposure.
- 2:31Nothing this ballmy spring Weather. That tell me if I didn't know you so
- 2:36well, if I hadn't wolf beats on the East Side with your father,
- 2:38I'd toss you out on your ears. And there's not a day you could
- 2:43do that, Captain. That's newspaper men come from hotty stock. Yeah,
- 2:46that kind of stock that makes good coppers. Why don't you go back to
- 2:50the game, Tommy, what No matter how many headlines you have, your
- 2:53name und you'll always be just a cup at heart, just a dumb,
- 2:57good natured cap. Oh yeah, thisten cap. Anytime I over that line,
- 3:00I'll join the Marines and go to China, if you had a new
- 3:02for news of your new newspaper, man yourself, if anything kept it hits
- 3:06you in this business, didn't think m m yeah, why needn't see your
- 3:09captain? Oh you're in now? I got a visitor coming in. Tell
- 3:15me you're a good boy. You can sit in here? Will I see
- 3:17what you want? But understand anymore? Yeah? But out of you?
- 3:21And aren't you go? Okay? Come in? Yes, I wonder if
- 3:30you would't mind talking to me for a minute. Captain, certainly not come
- 3:32in. I'll take this care please, thank you? Now? What is
- 3:37it? Missus? Missus Martha down? Perhaps I shouldn't have bothered you,
- 3:42Captain. I know how busy you police officers always are right, all right,
- 3:46Missus Dallan. If you just tell me, you see I told the
- 3:49officer to disk and he just got a smile and didn't say anything. And
- 3:53I well, if you just tell me, Missus Jaron, Now, what's
- 3:58wrong if someone in your family? And this will not exactly Captain. You
- 4:01see it's my niece Patricia. He's missing. No, Captain, it's her
- 4:06cat that's missing. Missus Gowan, what were the circumstances surrounding the cat disappearance.
- 4:16No, Patricia was playing with the cat in the backyard, and all
- 4:19of a sudden it bounded over the fence and into the yard next door.
- 4:24Running to the gates, my niece saw another little girl about her aide,
- 4:29nat the cat into her arms and run into the house next door. Did
- 4:32you inquire about the cat? Yes, and they said that I must be
- 4:35mistaken, but there was no little girl living there, and that there was
- 4:40certainly no cat in their house. Perhaps your niece was mistaken. No,
- 4:44I'm sure of that, Captain. Patricia is exceedingly truthful. How long are
- 4:47these people live next door to you? For more than twelve years? And
- 4:51Captain, what were you about to say, Missus Gowran, Oh, something
- 4:58dreadful about that place? Captain? The Croxtons have lived in that house for
- 5:01twelve years, and never once have I seen them except going in and out.
- 5:08Why that house hasn't seen the light of day since the day they moved
- 5:11into me because the shave haven't been up in twelve years. Just what does
- 5:16this mister Cruxton do, Missus Gallan. I can't tell you that he leaves
- 5:21home with his sister every morning at eight thirty, and I hardly ever see
- 5:25the return. Do they keep any servants? Yes, an old man,
- 5:29a horrible looking old man. I've threatened to move several times, but then,
- 5:33after all, why should I. They never make any noise that it's
- 5:39just the deathly side of well, missus Gowran, I'm afraid you've allowed yourself
- 5:45to become overwrought about the kitten. It'll probably come home and if a doesen't,
- 5:49Yeah, well I'll just stroll around and ask the crusts about it myself.
- 6:12I tells the old cat on it tonight. Sit down and shut up
- 6:15to me. I'm talking on the farm. Yes, what time is this?
- 6:19Oh? I see, we'll stay on the job Ovan, I'll be
- 6:24around about four. Hey, you look worried, cap I've been doing.
- 6:27I'm thinking, Tommy, don't some of unusual? Is it as it feel?
- 6:30I mean, no mood for sarcasm today, I've got news for you.
- 6:33You don't mean to tell me the cat has mitt the foul play.
- 6:36Yeah, but the day I called upon the croxton, you know. Tell
- 6:41me I'm in trying to agree with missus Gowan. I don't know just why,
- 6:45but I do. Yeah, if your team sent a perception working cat,
- 6:48keep on and you'll find that cat. Yet, it isn't the cat
- 6:50that's worry on me, Tommy, it's the story about that little girl.
- 6:54But the croxton said there wasn't a little girl in their house. Yeah,
- 6:57I know, that's what I told Missus Gollan today. They told me that
- 7:00the little girl hadn't picked up the cat, practically admitting that there was a
- 7:03little girl in there. They said he'd tried to, but the cat got
- 7:06away. Very wise. They cast the matter of his side, And it's
- 7:11fiddle, what are you worrying about now? Well? I had a talk
- 7:14with Missus Gowan's niece and he impressed me very much as a youngster who always
- 7:17tells the truth. He said that a very ragged, dirty little girl had
- 7:21snatched up the cat and run inside. And I bow, screw if you
- 7:25asked me, if you had a nose for news, tell me you'd asked
- 7:28me what I intend doing? All right, I'll ask you what do you
- 7:30intend to do about this matter? Captain Nelson. I intend to get into
- 7:33that house this afternoon and find out what's going on behind those shades, and
- 7:36tell me, if you're a good actor, you can go with me.
- 8:00Yeah, that's a big step that you talked me into this step. There's
- 8:03like a crown in this housefit. No, you don't come in. You
- 8:07look like an employee of a municipal water company, and you better act the
- 8:09part. If doctor Cruxton is a smart man, it's all a lot of
- 8:13hooey. If you ask me what you're stopping here for. One of the
- 8:16boys from the office was to meet me here. Oh here he is.
- 8:20Want to find out nothing much, Captain. This guy Croxton runs their brookerage
- 8:24business downtown, has a select clientele company named this overman. So the very
- 8:28retiring sort of guy keeps out of sight most of the time. Nasty disposition.
- 8:33How about the wrapping people. You found a mere trash book and I
- 8:35took it over the powers. He traced it to the Brooks Chemical Company.
- 8:37They said that regular deliveries and made the Crockson's house here, but they couldn't
- 8:41reveal the nature of the orders. Mister Brooks understood that Croxton was an amateur
- 8:46chemist. See all right, pizza's done very well. Get back to your
- 8:48post. We're going inside that house. Come on, Tommy, I couldn't
- 8:52look it to the step. Always talk about the Luisa Tommy cousin supplying you
- 8:58don't think that that has I'm not saying what I think right now. I
- 9:00mean, but if you're half the cup that you're dead was, you'll know
- 9:03that there's something wrong here. But what I don't appear too interested when you
- 9:07get in the house. Crust in his house, the sisters the only one
- 9:09home, and from the glances that I got at her this morning, sees
- 9:13it's mean, if not meter than Cirkson. Don't you recognize you in that
- 9:16get up? Yeah? Well that's up to you start a line of pattern
- 9:18and keep it going. Yeah, we're supposed to be water company inspectors,
- 9:22and it's up to you to keep the woman engaged in conversation while I get
- 9:26around and look at the house. We leave the meet caps. I'd be
- 9:30looking great, isn't it. I wouldn't live here in a bit. Well,
- 9:35a story to bother you, madam, But we're inspected for the water
- 9:37company. We're running New Maine through here, and we'll have to inspect and
- 9:41check the condition of your faces. But there's no reason. You just take
- 9:43a minute, madam, come on as him. You can take the upstair
- 9:46taps and I will take the ones down here, now, if you'll show
- 9:48me where the meter is, ma'am, I'm sure that this isn't whole lot
- 9:52of I'm sorry, ma'am. Company orders. Man's got to make a living
- 9:54nowadays, you know. Just the other day, three of the new inspectors
- 9:58will let out for're missing a single house in the roots. Can imagine not
- 10:00a single house, And they let him out. Where's the kitchen? Where's
- 10:03that other man? God? Well, he's going upstairs to check for the
- 10:07bath fixtures. How need your help in the kitchen, ma'am? If you're
- 10:09just good from the door, all right, nice kitchen you've got here,
- 10:13nice lot, you know, ma'am. That's the trouble with most kitchens.
- 10:16They are too small, make you feel clamp and uncomfortable. A man likes
- 10:18to be wait. Please hurry, yes, ma'am, hurry up. That's
- 10:22me, you know. I'm well. I got the company liddle last year
- 10:24for reading the meters the fastest of any of the boys. What else are
- 10:28you going to do in here? Will not too much more, ma'am.
- 10:30Now, if you're just turning that tap on for me, please, that'll
- 10:33be enough. Now the other one, please, ma'am, that's good.
- 10:35Now, are there any other taps down here in the other laundry rooms?
- 10:39No, there are. If you finished, I should please go all right,
- 10:41ma'am. But you know, man's got to make a living the things
- 10:45the way they are. Now things, Are you finished? Yes, ma'am,
- 10:48I'll show you to the door. Oh oh, my partner finished before
- 10:52me. Everything okay, tim everything okay? Upstairs? Did you make a
- 10:56motor cask? No? No, we can do that later on the outside.
- 11:00Let's take a look at the long hydrants and go. Okay. Oh,
- 11:03I'm sorry we had to bother you, ma'am. Are you finished,
- 11:07yes, ma'am. All right, Well, I guess that's all. Thank
- 11:11you, ma'am. Find anything care? That's what I wanted. Quick back
- 11:16around the corner here, Yeah, this will be all right. You can
- 11:22keep an eye on the house from here and they can't see us. Look.
- 11:26Look what I've got under my coat. Holy snoop? Did cat?
- 11:28Yes? And I'm taking this cat to the police urgent right away. I
- 11:31want to find out what killed it. I also found something else in that
- 11:35house. What a dirty, ragged girl change in an upstairs clothes and Tommy,
- 11:39that little girl is in a very dangerous condition. You keep an eye
- 11:41on the house. I'll be backward in an hour. What do you find
- 11:52out, cap All? I need to know? Come on, where are
- 11:54we going? I had a search ward issued. We're going into that house
- 11:56and release that little girl. But but what well this guy crossed it went
- 12:01in there about ten minutes ago. I'm short with him. He was a
- 12:03dead ringer for that sister. He is. Hurry, tell me they're on
- 12:05to us. The sister probably calls for trucks him to come right home.
- 12:09If we want to say that chu's light, we'll have to hurry. What
- 12:11did you find out about the cat? Cat all I needed to know?
- 12:13Don't ask questions now, I'll tell you one thing though. That cat was
- 12:16killed with more fame. All right, knock on the door. What do
- 12:26you want? I'm Captain Nelson from the local precincts. I have a warrant
- 12:30to search your house. Well, I'm sure there must be some mistake,
- 12:33no no reason, come on in, tell me put up, don't tell
- 12:35you. I'll show you quick, the police guess I want to quick.
- 12:39Tell me get a good boy. All right, now up those stairs,
- 12:43both of you right, you can't do this. You haven't got to sing
- 12:48on it. Your cat here unlocked this door. I don't have the key
- 12:54unlocked this door. All right, there's a little girl. Honey. We're
- 13:09not going to hit your honey. We're your friends here. Let me take

- 17:36hard with him. Thanks, that's a promise, kid. Thanks. And
- 17:41there was certainly allowed and wasn't he? Yeah, and you can't blame that
- 17:44much, you know that, Davoi. Yeah, I think so now that
- 17:48a month's pay is the same Savoli that was in here a month ago for
- 17:49beating rather than that Blaine man, Oh do you think so? Yes?
- 17:52Sure, I'm pretty sure. Yes, it's one. Wait fine, oh
- 18:00I can wait. Well, I'm Frank Williams brother the girl who's injured.
- 18:03Deceive me and I demand that you do any Hey, listen, what are
- 18:06you trying to pull What do you mean you were just in here and I

- 18:19Your name was? Frank Williams? Oh, I see my brother's been
- 18:25here before me, her brother. Yes, we're twins. This isn't a
- 18:27gag, is it not at all? Oh, don't worry, captain.
- 18:30If our folks can't tell us the part, I can hardly expect you to.
- 18:34Oh what's been done? Wait a minute, let me get this straight.
- 18:37You're you are Frank William right, and you've got a twin brother named
- 18:41Bob. That's right. And nobody can tell you apart mother says she can,
- 18:45but we're not assured of it even she sets up. Now, then
- 18:48well that's run for the book. Well what's been done? To find a
- 18:52man try to kill my sister? And he placed the CARDO tell her name
- 18:55Favoli holding yeah, Ernst do any No? No, I don't know him.
- 19:00Are you sure, kid, pertainely, I'm sure. Well, don't
- 19:03worry. I've put a detail out on him. Now we will have him
- 19:07inside of twenty four hours. You can bank on that. Then what if
- 19:10he hires a clever lawyer he beat the child that your brother said? But
- 19:14don't worry. We'll do our best to make it stick. And I know
- 19:15the district attorney will too. He's making a drive on these cases that have
- 19:19happened. Likely, All right, go on, kid, I hope I
- 19:22never meet you both in a dark alley. I probably think I'm seeing things,
- 19:49drag everything. I got the fold and the girl that indepied him or
- 19:52took him down to the hospital and she almost went crazy when she saw him.
- 19:56And then this guy produces seven witnesses. He say that he wasn't an
- 20:00in car that night. Uh what about it to check up on him?
- 20:03Yeah, liars, that's all a whole rotten pack of liars. And they're
- 20:06all willing they go to the stand and where that Tavoli wasn't even outside the
- 20:10Red Domino parlor. Well, that's all we can do. We've got Savolian
- 20:14jail and it's up to the DA to make the rap stick. You mean
- 20:15we did have Tavoli in the joke. What do you mean he's out?
- 20:18That's what there's a lawyer down before they sold doors closed the rider habeas carpet.
- 20:23Davoli didn't even get as far as the jailers. How long has he
- 20:26been out all afternoons in the afternoon papers. I didn't take a bureau Captain

- 21:15go into the Domino pallor, that looks like an awful nice young man,
- 21:18I say to myself, to be going into such a place. Then all
- 21:22of a sudden it comes out, followed by a dark Italian looking man.
- 21:26When you reached the center of the street, boy give vote. The boy
- 21:29turns around, pulls out a gun and should see other men? How many
- 21:33diamonds as I think? Oh, I don't know, Captain five six,
- 21:37maybe seven? I didn't wait to count. Would you know this boy again?
- 21:41Oh? Yeah, Captain always, I will know his ah right in
- 21:45just a minute. Right what did he say? And get the bomb on
- 21:51him? Right now, mister, think we're going to bring a young man
- 21:55in here. I want to impress upon you the importance of this identification.
- 21:59I want to look at him carefully, notice the way he's dressed and everything
- 22:03about him, and then tell me if he's a man you saw firing the
- 22:06gun? All right? Stand right over here? Please there? How mis
- 22:12a think that's him? Sure? That's him? You couldn't be mistaken,
- 22:18No, captain, not even a million years. All right, take him,
- 22:22Od Drakes, well send the other boy in all now you're sure that
- 22:30that was a boy? Are you? Missus? Think yes? Is this
- 22:34the man? What do you think? Is it theanan? I think yes?
- 22:41Why didn't the officer just take out the other man? You're positive in
- 22:44your identification, are you? Yes? Kitten? But I don't see.
- 22:48Thank you for coming down. We will find out the body anymore until the
- 22:51trial, sure, O Drake, Thank you captain. Let me see you're
- 23:00Bob Williams, aren't you? Yeah? Alison lad Well, you want you
- 23:03to help us you're not going to get much for this killing, if you
- 23:06get anything at all, But we've got to arrest you and bring you to
- 23:08trial. That is, whichever one of you kills SAVOLDI now tell me,
- 23:12Bob, which one of you killed him? Frank killed him? Or were
- 23:17you at home in the basement? Anybody see you there? No? Ione
- 23:19tell me? So Frank him in his four o'clock What did you do?
- 23:22Then helped him clean the fingerprints up a revolver. I see, and bring
- 23:26Frank in drag right, captain, Oh, Frank, Bob here has just
- 23:33told us that you killed Savoli. I killed him? Yeah, didn't you?
- 23:37Bob's crazy? He killed him? Or were you at the time at
- 23:41home in the basement? Anybody see you there? No? How long were
- 23:45you there until Bob came in at four o'clock? And what did you do?
- 23:49Then? I helped him clean the fingerprints up a revolver? I see?
- 23:53Huh? Well, you you boys go home until I figure this thing
- 23:59out. Let me ask you again, did you kill Savoli? Prank?
- 24:03No, Bob killed him. Did you kill SAVORI? Bobom thanks crazy?
- 24:07He killed him? Oh? Boys, give me some time to think about
- 24:11this. Thank you. Captain. Thank you, captain, you know something
- 24:18great? What's that? It just occurred to me that the district attorney is
- 24:22going to have a tough time making a charge stick against either of those boys.
- 24:26Only one of them is what the scene of the crime. Therefore,
- 24:29we can only accuse one of them. The only witness we have can't tell
- 24:33which one of them did it. They both turned state evidence against the other,
- 24:37so we can't charge him with conspiracy to defeat the law. And the
- 24:40law says we can't charge but one of them with a martyr. So there
- 24:42you are. It's up to the DA. Huh, what are you looking
- 24:48at, Drank? Let's looking at those two kids through the window here,
- 24:51Captain, they're walking along. I mean, I am like they didn't have
- 24:55a care in the world. And what's more, they haven't, Yes,
- 24:57sir as one prediction, welcome back. And the moral of that last story
- 25:21is that if a criminal is able to get out of a charge simply concoct
- 25:29a cover of her plan to commit murder, You got to have to wonder
- 25:33what these producers were thinking as they wrote these programs. Well, this is
- 25:38a type of thing that would generally be considered okay within I guess a thirties
- 25:45style of crime story, and there was a lot of things that would be
- 25:51considered okay in fiction, we would tend to frown upon in general, just
- 25:56because the police tended to get viewed as corrupt or as in this case,
- 26:04ineffective. So the only way that a person could actually get justice was to
- 26:11take the law into their own hands, at least according to the prevailing ideology
- 26:18and a lot of Meatia productions of the era. I also had to admit
- 26:23the first one was somewhat interesting, as he left the poor girl chained in
- 26:30the house while and left a reporter guarding it so that he could get a
- 26:38legal search warrant to uncover what he had found, and he's the illegal search.
- 26:44But that was actually a decent pace of detective work, and I thought
- 26:48it made sense, and I appreciated that he followed up on a step could
- 26:52often be easily dismissed as unimportant. Well, that will do it for today.
- 26:59We will be back on Monday with Pursuit, and then join us back
