- 0:00SPEAKER_02: Welcome to Everyone's a Critic.
- 0:02SPEAKER_02: A show where a guest picks a movie rated below forty percent on Rotten Tomatoes and tells us why critics got it wrong.
- 0:08SPEAKER_02: I'm your host, Yannis Cove, a formerly pretentious film school student.
- 0:12SPEAKER_02: Ten years later sees the error of his ways.
- 0:15SPEAKER_02: My guest today is comedian and writer Millie Tamares.
- 0:23SPEAKER_01: Hi, is that your intro?
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: You gotta do it over again.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: More energy, more energy.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: No, that's no.
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: That's me starting.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: There's an intro before that, and you were like, hi Millie, how are you?
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: We're so happy to have you on our show.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Damn.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Already failed.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: First question.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: Hi Millie, how's it going?
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: We're so glad to have you on the show.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: See, too British.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Got no zest for life.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: You're you're so reserved and comfortable with your healthcare.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: I've been in the same room for four months.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: Give me a break.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: How are you doing?
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: Do you really want to know or is that a force?
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm good.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: You know, as good as one can be.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Woke up not too long ago.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: I've been waking up early.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: I've been waking up at 6 a.m.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: So I feel like have you ever been to LA?
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: So it's like when you're in LA and you wake up and you're on Twitter or Facebook or anything, you're like, oh shit, like all this shit has happened.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: Um like and you're trying to catch up.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: Uh but now I wake up in the at like I've been waking up at six in the morning, like not on purpose.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: And I'll go to bed at two, but I'll wake up at six in the morning, and now I get all like on my timeline, I'm just getting all this British drama.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: All this UK drama, UK T, like, like, ooh, he wrote what of all these people I don't know.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: It's so fun.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: It's so fun.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: Like all the drama, and then like, like, yeah, I love it.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: And like, ooh, what did Megan Markle say today?
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: Like, I would have never known if I wouldn't wake up at 6 a.m.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Because then by the time so I'll go back to sleep and then I'll wake up at a more respectable hour, like 9 a.m.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: Oh right.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: Or 10 a.m.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: And then by then, like, America has come up.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: Then it's everyone's waking up.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: Everyone's waking up, and there's all this gentleman like, Jada Pickett Smith did what?
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: And then meanwhile, Jada's in LA like, what's going on?
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm kind of the opposite.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: So I I I've been going to bed really late and just like seeing all the like the late night American stuff that I don't usually see.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: And then waking up late here, so I've kind of like I think I'm waking up around the same time as you probably.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, probably.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: Late night Americans, I mean late night Twitter is insane.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: And it used to be worse, I've heard I've been told.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: But yeah, yeah, it used to be way worse.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: Like it used to be if you go after Twitter on Twitter after a certain time, like everyone's just talking about eating ass and like crazy sexual stuff.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: Which I still see sometimes.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: I have a reply guy.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, I mean I have a lot of them, but one of them just be posting he posted his dick on Twitter.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: That was crazy.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: Of course.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: I shared it, I I took a screenshot of that one.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: And then I showed it at my close friends.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: It was crazy, it was very blurry.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: Like he was like, like, like I think he took like a self-timer and he opened a towel and closed it.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: And I was like, this is crazy.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: That makes it even worse.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: On Twitter, yeah, and then like he and then I don't know, like I just got into Twitter etiquette recently.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: Like the but like before, I would follow everyone who followed me, even like random crazy people.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: So and then and then now I'm like, okay, they're grandfathered in.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: I can't unfollow them because that's mean.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: Because I always talk shit about people who do follow to follow shit.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: I hate that shit so much.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: Like people who like care about their ratio or like unfollow people for clap.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: I care.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: I mean, I don't care about my ratio, but I can't.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: No, I don't care about my ratio.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: I care, well, I do I care if it's like a peer that I've had shows and done shows with and stuff like that, and then we follow each other, or I follow them on Instagram and they don't follow me back.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Or they follow me and unfollow me.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Like, I feel like that's so corny.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's what I mean.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: I don't care I don't care on my side of like following people.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: I don't care if I have like a large number that I'm following or something.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: Um, but this guy, I followed him back, and then I'm seeing his activity, and I'm like, oh, this guy's obsessed with like black large women on the internet.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: It's just all these like it's like all like sex workers sending like commenting on their shit, and like I'm just like, man, I think he like followed me thinking that that's what this was, and it's not, but he was because I follow him.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: That was the first like I realized that sex workers travel, like they tore, right?
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: Like, like I saw one who had like a flyer of like Austin from this day, it's just like and put your deposits down.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: So it's like fucking it gene, it's genius.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: Um I'm gonna uh travel and fuck some people while I'm there and I'm gonna get paid for it.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: And you have to leave a deposit and it's gonna fund my travel.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: And then I'm gonna book all these dates and book a schedule of like maybe fuck people on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and then Friday, Saturday, Sunday That's for me.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: So yeah, go fucking sightsee or whatever.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: I thought I thought that was so genius.
- 5:58SPEAKER_02: So did you follow her back?
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, I didn't follow her, but I saw that shit.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: And then I was one time, because this guy lives in the in the middle of America.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: I actually was in his town for like a comedy show that I did or something.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: And then he's like, Why didn't you hit me up?
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, absolutely not.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: I was like, oh, I was only there for I'm like, hell no, I don't fucking call it like hell no.
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: She doesn't ask for a deposit.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: A deposit and like never see you.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: Or just do that guilt thing that you do.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the white yeah, white gill.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: He's not white, but yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: The the white guilt thing, yeah, yeah.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: My white guilt thing.
- 6:35SPEAKER_02: Which is also genius.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: Oh, thank you.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: I can't even say any people are like, yeah, you're fin domming, and I'm like, what the fuck is that?
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: Fin dombing?
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's like when you uh and I know we're not even like talking about the fucking whatever the fuck movie shit this is.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: We'll get into it later.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: Um, that's when you're a dominatrix, like a financial dominatrix, and you like yeah, like you piece of shit, like give me some money.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: And like I was like, I don't do that, and then I'm like, yes, I do.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: It's it's borderline, isn't it?
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: It's like kind of there, but it's not quite.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I get labeled a lot.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: I get I get a lot of people who read my energy as dumb and like dumb, and like I don't really agree, but I don't disagree.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: I'm not not a dumb, but like, you know, I don't want to do all it's just a lot of work.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: It yeah, that seems like a lot to do.
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: All you're doing is just like saying, yeah, it's fine, whatever you did.
- 7:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: I mean I I don't and I don't even like that.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: Uh to be honest, but that's a whole other podcast.
- 7:45SPEAKER_02: So let's get to the movie then.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: So you picked uh the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: I'm obsessed.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: So when I was I grew up one of six kids.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: And I guess when I was young to deal with the trauma, I mean I guess I just like enjoyed all the fun parts, and now that I'm older, I'm like, oh, there's a lot of things that suck about being one of six kids that I'm dealing with and unpacking with now.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: Oh but at the time, I was like, yeah, I want to have six kids.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: Like, this shit is fun.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: Nothing's ever my fault.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: I can always blame something on somebody else.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: I always have new clothes because I steal from everybody.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: Um my my brother like would be high with like my brother went to Dairy Queen.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: My older brother worked in Dairy Queen, my other sister worked in Kmart, and like they like my brother would be high, like I could tell when my brother got paid because he would come home and he'd bring all these slacks that my mom would never buy junk food.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: But my like high older brother would come with all this junk food and like, yeah.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: So it's like there's so many fun things about so I was like, when I get older, I'm gonna have five kids, and they're gonna be Raphael, Donatello, Michelangelo, um, Donatello, Michelangelo, Raphael, Michael.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: Leonardo.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: Leonardo, yes.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: And then it's gonna be four boys and one girl.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: Also two, because I found like my gendered concepts of like it's easier to raise boys.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: I feel like it is like easier to raise boys when they're younger.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: I mean when they're older.
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: When they're older, yeah.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Like, because but that's but that's not true, you know what I mean?
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: But like girl because boys have just so much energy, like when they're four, they're just like But like you know, that's not true.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: Uh you know, who knows how true that is.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: Uh, but how they're how they're socialized.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: Anyway, and then I'm gonna have a young girl named Millie.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna call her Millie Jr.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: Oh I was expecting you say April.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: No, Millie.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: That's where I differ.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: Uh and I'm like, someone needs to be punished by this name.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: What's wrong with Millie?
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Man, it was tough.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: Now it's like okay, like it's kind of cool because it's like not a lot of people have this name or people's nickname, but it's like it's my mom's nickname.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: My mom's name is Miledes.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: All my brothers and sisters have really cool names, like Juan Carlos, Iris Gabriela, Diana Miledes, Claudio Gabriel, and then I'm five number five of six, so it's like Millie, no middle name.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: Like, what the fuck?
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: And then my little brother has like uh uh Gabriel Tejera Tamares, like his my mom's last name is his middle name.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: So even that's cool.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: So I'm the only one without a middle name.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: And it's a nickname, so people are like, is that really like is that a nickname?
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: Or like or people think it's a nickname.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: It's like that is that really how you spell your name?
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: Is that whatever?
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: Like, all that shit.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: It's like, are you sure it's not Millicent?
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, yeah, I'm fucking sure.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: Uh there's all these dumb, like, there's like Millie Vanilli, oh yeah, like the band, and then silly Millie, like just stupid shit.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: It just runs into that shit.
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: You know, so I'm just like, I have to pass this name on to somebody else.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: Baby girl.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: But I'm not having five kids, I don't know I'm like, I'm not having fucking five kids.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: Are you kidding me?
- 11:29SPEAKER_02: But you can still have a girl and do that.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: Oh, I could still have a girl and do that for sure, but I just want yeah, I just want a gr maybe I want two kids, like a gay son and a girl.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: The gay son could be for me, and the girl could be for their dad.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: Like, and then you know, they have like daddy, you know, I just I need a gay son.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: It's just canon for me.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: I have to.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: Uh or he could not be gay, it's fine.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: I'll accept I'll love him no matter what.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: But I want him to be gay.
- 12:06SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's like a reverse thing of I'll love him no matter what.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: I love him no matter what, whatever, but you know.
- 12:11SPEAKER_02: But I want him to be gay.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: I think life is gonna be easier for him if he's Oh, I don't think so.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: Um as a yeah, I think I'll I don't I'll make it easier for him.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: Oh man.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: So yeah, your history with this movie is that you yeah, I love it, yeah.
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: That you so when did you first see it?
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: Like when you I think you're gonna be a little bit more.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: Oh when I was a kid, when I was a young kid.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: And it's so funny because it's so the Ninja Turtles is so like I guess when I was when I was really young, like, which is like man, society, everything fucking jades, like fades and like jades you.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: But when I was really young, I always wanted to live in New York.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: And I was always like, I love New York.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: And all my favorite movies were about New York, uh Coming to America, Ninja Turtles, and all this stuff.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: And then like when I was in high school, I don't know, I like there there's something where like I I kind of thought like I was looking, I realized maybe I was looking at New York through rose-colored glasses.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: But now as an adult, I'm like, no, I knew what I wanted, and like I knew that I didn't want like I knew what I wanted and I didn't want at a young age, and I diluted myself into thinking but anyway, like I I I that was like uh the Ninja Turtles classic is such a snapshot of a New York that doesn't exist anymore or is remnant of like But it I feel like it it might be there after coronavirus of like a little bit more dangerous, dirtier, yeah, grittier.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: Um, and then there's still parts of the city that's like oh this is Ninja Turtles, New York.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: This is not like like Disney, New York, that's Times Square.
- 14:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: But like there's definitely parts of the city at night, like the very like, it's not even like the hood parts or whatever that people think, but for me, there are places that are like very industrial or have a lot of office buildings and shit like that.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: And um at night, like when I would be coming home from a comedy show, it's like 12 or like 1 a.m.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I'm walking to the train, and you're in this place that's like tends to be very overly populated, and then at night it's just dead.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: I just feel like oh my god, the Foot Clan is gonna come and beat my ass.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: Um that there's just so many th yeah, and like even too even like around coronavirus, like I went to go because I was by myself for a few months, and I would go see my friends who live like down the street from me, and I would come home, you know.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: They live like three two three blocks away, Marsha.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, like I walk home at two or three in the morning, which is fine, like normal.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: Two or three in the morning, any other time, like you're seeing people, there's bars open, it's fine.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: Especially for like a two-block walk.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: But like during coronavirus, like at the fucking peak of like shit, like it's dead and scary, and like it's dark, and you're like, oh my god, someone like a group of like ninjas are gonna beat my ass.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: That's also what I felt too when I was in um literally, there's this like really my friend worked at Microsoft and he invited me to his holiday party, which was like in January.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: So it was like after the holidays, it was like in January.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then um uh it was very formal and it was a masquerade ball, and then it was in this place called Gotham Hall.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Oh and it had like the lights, it looked like Batman.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: It looked like Batman.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: It looked like something like we're all wearing masks, and then everyone's in ball gowns and like fur coats because it's the winter, and and um and and then we're in Gotham Hall, and then there's all this like like fucking jester shit, and I'm like, oh my god, we're all gonna like some fucking asshole's gonna come in through the ceiling and like like take all our money and kill us all.
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: I I uh before that I thought it was quite funny how you just kept like thinking, oh, it's gonna be ninjas, as opposed to anything else.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: You're like, oh the ninjas are coming.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: The Foot Clan, yeah.
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: The Foot Clan, yeah.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: Well the Foot Clan is like a gang.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: But they are not they're not scary.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: Kind of, like, like for the most part, gang and guns and stuff, like they're not in like of course I have that fear, but they're not in the industrial, yeah, like or you know, office area.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: And like, nine times out of ten, like, that the I mean in terms of like gang violence, it's very insular.
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: It's not really like they're not targeting rent, it's not like mass shooters, yeah or somebody who's like, I'm gonna leave my house and kill anybody.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: They're very rarely like that.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: It's very strategic turf war, whatever.
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: Wait, are you talking about a real gang now?
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm talking about real gangs.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: And then why the Foot Clan is scary is because they would target random people and they would do like petty crimes and beat random people's ass, and they didn't know there was like kind of no it was like anarchy in there.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: There was no like methodology about, you know, they would just send people to rob, you know.
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: Actually, that's true.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: It's there's like a there's an opening a scene in the opening kind of part where they attack uh April O'Neill.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: And I I wrote down that it was this is really violent for a kid's movie.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: Um it's quite because they like throw her on the ground and and I don't know, if it's it's like um there's something weird about those like early nine late late 80s, early nineties uh New York movies where they have that like dark scene uh of like violence and everything.
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: We don't get that anymore.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: Well, I feel like two things.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: I feel like it was always against a woman to push plot along.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: Like that's like a huge fucking thing.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, yeah.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: It's always against a woman, and then a man feels compelled to like come and rescue her.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: And then two, just in general with American stuff, kids shit is all fucked because like I don't think there's a kiss in this movie.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: Is there?
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: Do April and there is a kiss.
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay, okay.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: April and him do kiss.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: But it's like at the end.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: It's at the very end, yeah.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: And like not really like reward, you know what I mean?
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: I don't know if it's like a make out, it's more like a like a or some shit like that, right?
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: Um but like violence, there's like tons of violence.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: But then if there's a fucking kid, I mean, that's how I feel sometimes watching like Korean dramas and Asian dramas.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: Oh really?
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: It's like especially Korean, I mean at least Japanese stuff, I don't see too much violence, like people fighting or getting slapped and shit.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: Korean shit, you'll see somebody get their ass beat to death almost to death.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: And then like, but then there'll be fucking no kissing.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: Or like there was one where it was like the whole thing, you see, oh my god.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: There's the this one one that I watched, I mean only because I'm in fucking quarantine.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: Uh like they I watched uh it's about this guy and like his this like this dad, he's like a single dad, and he's like driving a moped to go see his son after a long day of work, and this guy like hits him with a moped.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: And the way that they shot this was they put a GoPro on the actor and then have him like jumbling down a hill and like and then like slow like you see his like head get dislocated and all this shit, and then there's like blood everywhere, and then he has a tear, and like in his last clings of breath, like the picture of his son um that flew off the moped with like arm's length, and he reaches for it, and then like a bloody tear fall through.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: Like, he's like, I must live for my son, and then we see that scene flashed back like at least 30 times in this fucking series.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: And then I know, and then there's some parts where it's like implied or like there's a part where um the main character has had a crush on this girl for like six years, and they go out and they go party together, and they get drunk, and he walks her home, and she's like, Do you want to come in?
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: And he's like, No, you said you'd only want to marry Rich, and I'm not Rich yet, but I will be one day.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: It's just like that wouldn't happen! Like, what the fuck?
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: Like, why can't we see them fuck or make out or something?
- 21:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then at the end, like they f like there's finally a kiss, and then it's just the most terrible, awkward kiss I've ever seen.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: It's just like he grabs her, and then they're just like look, this like just like pressed against, like, oh my god.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: And I just feel like that's a thing instant where we are like meanwhile, we've seen him like his dad die 80 times, he beat the shit out of 15 people, he got hit by a car, and then there's like a scene where the villain teaches his son how to be evil by like snapping a chicken's neck, and then he like we flash back to him slowly snapping a chicken's neck, and then like also one time he's out to dinner, and they the the Andre's like chicken, and he has like a fucking PTSD about being served chicken, and I'm just like, come on.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Like we and then it's like we don't need to see a f I don't know.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: I don't make me skip it's again this has nothing to do with teenage human ninja journals, but I have strong feelings about and I still watch them because the storytelling is amazing, but no, it's good, like obviously they're compelling stories.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: It's just like I really feel like they overuse flashbags.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: Like last example is like there's this one scene where everyone's in like they're all like working in a restaurant, and then they're like, you know, who said who did it?
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: And they all look at each other, and then it was like this one guy, and then this girl goes, Hey, can we talk on the roof for a second?
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: And he's like, Yeah.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: And they go on the roof, and then she's like, Remember what happened down there?
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: And then they flashback to it's like we just saw this, and we don't need why do we need to see a flashback of something like that?
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, anyway.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: Speaking of tying it back to the movie, they use great flashbacks in this movie.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: Great flashbacks.
- 23:01SPEAKER_02: The flashbacks are weird.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: I love 'em.
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: They're like, um, so that they they do flashbacks to like um I guess like the the turtles' childhood and when they were like first like uh growing and everything.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: The the uh so like the turtles when they're like the fully grown teenagers, they look great.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: When they go back to like the old like the young versions of themselves, they look really, really weird and it's creepy.
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: Oh, I don't mind it.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: I like the storytelling because I forgot the the origin story of like how they all known karate and it was like really great.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: Like I think it's a really great origin story of like this Japanese immigrant who was like they fought like back in the day.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: I I thought it was amazing.
- 23:45SPEAKER_02: Um Yeah, I do like I do I I like the story.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: I just think they look weird when they flashed back to the I like I missed that because I also think that it's impressive.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: The Michael I just hate when everything's switched to CGI.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: Oh and I know it's like probably easier and like whatever, but it's just like it's just so much cooler to see actually.
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: It looks so much better.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: It looks so much better and it's more realistic, and it was like it's like even Incredible Hulk, like when Incredible Hulk was just a big ass dude, that was so fucking cool.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: Versus like and a little bit more realistic than like just being this big CGI thing that like has no limits.
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: I think CGI can be great for like you know, the way that Black Panther used it for like exteriors and all that shit.
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but like and like making landscapes or whatever, but I feel like you don't really need I don't know, I don't think you really need uh No, I think it miss I think it like seeing this again, I haven't seen this in a long, long time.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: And I was like really happy to see uh the uh costumes and the costume design and everything.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: I thought it looked see it looks it almost looks like um I don't know if they did anything to they can't have done anything to the males back then, I don't think, like to make them they wouldn't have done CGI on the males or anything.
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: No, did you see, but did you see the um there's like a Twitter thing that someone's like, oh my god, ill, like you can see like because the the way that their mouths are open, you can see their eyes, like the guy inside.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: And I was like, oh fuck, this ruined this shit for me.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: Um but then when I rewatched it, I was looking out for that.
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: Like if you could because it does look creepy, it's like their mouth, and then there's eyes in the back.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: But but no, like um, or you can see the guys or the actual actors' mouths.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: I forgot.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: You can see, uh but but I feel like no, that person had to like have paused the very specific part and zoomed in and like because I didn't see anything.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: I definitely didn't see that.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: But it was um, you know, it was created by Jim Henson, which I think I love Jim Henson.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I love the Muppets, I love Sesame Street, I love all that shit.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: So I re like of course all the animatronics and all that shit's gonna be super impressive.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: I miss all that.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: I don't think we've had it in a long time.
- 26:07SPEAKER_02: I can't think of it.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: I mean, I love that the Muppets have I really love and like that the Muppets in Sesame Street have like stuck around and like they've been pretty pure about their shit and their brand and their inclusion of CGI stuff.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: But yeah, in terms of like mainstream movies, like not that yeah, not that much.
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: I guess like maybe maybe the Muppets movie was the last thing like the last thing I can think of, but even that's just the Muppets so it's like there was like a movie that was like with um what's her fucking face?
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: She Melissa McCarthy.
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, where it's like car like like puppets doing like fucking and like uh like an avenue report.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: Like that film noir but with puppets.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: And I think I like the idea, but I'm just like uh why did this get a budget?
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: It didn't look very good, so I never saw it.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but um I'm like that should have been like on TBS or I mean on some like kind of made-for-tv shit.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:07SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, that and also like there's not many movies.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: I mean, I guess that's all CGI too, but like there's not really like space jammy, like one guy or like um what's his name?
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: Roger Rabbit of like one person talking to cartoons.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: That would be great if they started doing that again.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: I know they made they're making LeBron James Space Jam.
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know they're doing Space Jam too.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: Uh I'm not entirely sure how that's gonna work, but I'm excited.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'll be really interested to see tune.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: It was such an interesting concept of like Looney Tunes plus basketball plus aliens.
- 27:44SPEAKER_02: And it all comes from a commercial.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: And it all comes from a commercial.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: A lot of great things do.
- 27:51SPEAKER_01: Not to call not to call Chris Brown great, but objectively the song.
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, not.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: But the song Forever is amazing.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: And uh that's from a gum commercial.
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: Oh, is it?
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's from like It Lasts Forever, like double, like double the fun, double the trouble.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: And it it's like or double yeah, because of like some gum shit.
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: And it became like a really popular wedding song and everything.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know it was a wedding song, and then I also think of it whenever I hear that, I just think of the office now.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: Because there was a wedding song that was popular with flash mobs and all that stuff.
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: It was before the Rihanna stuff.
- 28:29SPEAKER_02: Uh.
- 28:30SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: He really did.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: Well, what are you gonna do?
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: So the movie itself is just like it's um basically they uh I'm trying to segue.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: They're four turtles, they came from they came from radioactive ooze.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: Uh and Splinter is a rat who also uh was It's so ridiculous.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: I know, but it's also cool to like I'm sure you know that Americans think like the Brit like the British accent is so reformed and refined, so hearing you talk about Splinter and Ooze and Sewers, like is just it's pretty entertaining.
- 29:22SPEAKER_02: I got called Australian the other day.
- 29:24SPEAKER_02: Someone thought I was Australian.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: No.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: I'm like, no, I I and it's happened multiple times, and I don't get why people think I'm Australian.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: Me and my roommate have been watching uh Married at First Sight Australia.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: Because we watched the American version, so we're like, let's watch the Australian version, because it's like fucking what else is there to do?
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: And it's so crazy.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: Uh it's so crazy, and they have so much plastic surgery.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: And the way that they talk, me and my roommate are like, Herm, like Amanda.
- 29:57unknown: Like, it's crazy.
- 29:58SPEAKER_02: I don't even know what you're saying.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: Amanda, they say Amander.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: Uh her.
- 30:04SPEAKER_02: Now what's are you saying home?
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they call it like you're her.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: Anyway, sorry.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: If you're from Australia, I love you.
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: Uh please have please put me up.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: I also said if um I met this girl in Brooklyn, and then we will get back to this movie.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: I met this girl in Brooklyn, and um I met all these Australian people at this show, at this rap show that I really liked.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: Um and uh I hung out with them after we were like drinking, and then I talked to this girl, I'm like, hey, so what are you doing in Brooklyn?
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: And then she's like, Coke.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, what?
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: She's like, yeah, coke is like really expensive like to get in in in l in Australia.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, a like a$60 bag in America is like$300 in Australia.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: Whoa.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: So or no,$400 in Australia.
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: So I mean, she's like, I'm here and I'm working at a coffee shop or whatever, but I'm mostly just partying and doing coke.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: Whatever.
- 31:07SPEAKER_02: And I'm just getting for the Coke.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, two realizations.
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: One, America's racist as hell, which we all know, but the fact that like British and Australian people can get visas like this, like, and there's so many undocumented, like other people of color who like are struggling so much and like can't get papers for anything, but um, and like Australian and like people can come here and just do coke for three months, and there's no question about it.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: Not even she was here for like a year or something.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: Um there's one, and then two, if comedy doesn't go well, I'm gonna go to Australia and sell three hundred dollar bags of Coke and get into the Coke game.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: And I was like thinking about telling like making a joke to my extended family, but if I did, I feel like it it would happen, like they would already make moves to telecoke.
- 32:02SPEAKER_01: I have enough going on in my family with drugs that I'm like, that would actually happen.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: Let me not say this.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: Am I gonna have to cut that out now?
- 32:14SPEAKER_01: Um, no, I feel like it's implied that I am Dominican.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: Like, I think it's implied that someone's not like you going to Australia to sell drugs.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: Oh no, if I go to Australia, that's if I move to Australia.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: If I move to Australia, but if I just go and visit, it's fine.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: So Ninja Turtles, Splinter.
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: Splinter.
- 32:48SPEAKER_02: You were in England, you know what we you know our accents.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 32:52SPEAKER_01: I'm like, it was so fun.
- 32:55SPEAKER_01: Uh but yeah, one time this guy did, were you there?
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: Oh, after that show that we did, yeah um, we were all drunk and talking and walking.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: You know, I think it was like me, my friend Marsha, who I came, and then my um my other friend Molly, who's from New Jersey, but she lives in London, and we're all talking like normal, and we're like, oh my god, what the fuck?
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: And then some British guy heard us and he's like, Oh my god, like making fun of an American accent.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: I was like, shut up, man.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: But I'm like, we probably do way worse to British people.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: Like, like I mean not way worse, but we're probably like when somebody hears a British person like, uh, like making d does the British accent, and it's just like, I'm sure.
- 33:40SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's always so bad.
- 33:41SPEAKER_02: It's always so so bad.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: I truly I really try not to try, but it's already come out in this podcast.
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: I know, but it's different, yeah.
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it is different.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's different when I'm like in the context, but I I don't really like use it in my comedy or anything.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: Uh I had to one time, like I was cast as like this was actually really funny.
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: This is a funny sketch that somebody wrote about like it's this like kid who um he's playing video games and then Hagrid comes and it's like you're going to you're you got into Hogwarts, and he's like, What?
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: No, I'm okay.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: And he's like, No, it's okay, like it's awesome.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, and then he's like, Well, are there any computers?
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: And they're like, uh, no, and it's like, no, this place sucks.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: And then he's like, Okay, well, you know, there is this guy who like his he who must not be named, and they're like, Wait, you want me to send you want to send me to a school where I could die?
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: Like, and then he's like, Well, you know, but people might call you mud, but he's like, I'm gonna get discriminated against like this place sucks.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: Like, and then I played his mom, and like I had to do it in a British accent, and it was like my first year acting in it was like one of my first sketches that I've acted in, and it was bad.
- 34:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, I feel like I could do a little better now, but I just I was hoping they made you play Hagrid.
- 35:03SPEAKER_01: No, no, no.
- 35:04SPEAKER_01: They made um they no, they did not make me play Hagrid.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: Uh no, that would be funny.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: No, I played I played a lot of dumb characters in sketches.
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: I played um Woman Who's Worried About Her Volvo during the purge.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: Uh they're gonna egg my car, Steve! We gotta go protect.
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: And he's like, they're gonna kill you.
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: And then there's another one.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, and then that's where the first time I played Steve Harvey was in the sketch.
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: Uh, and Steve Harvey.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: That the game of that sketch was that uh Steve Harvey makes out with all the contestants.
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: Uh so I let him make uh and then we're gonna go to Teenager Nerd Journals.
- 35:51SPEAKER_01: But I remember I was working in a tech comp I was working for an ad agency, and I sat next to the tech team, like the web development team, and there's all these guys, and of course I was super popular with them.
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: We had all these inside jokes, like they love me.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: It was like me and a table of like 10 guys, yeah, and um I got fucking brutally fired, like random, like not random, like randomly to me, not randomly to them.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: Like, like they just pulled me into a meeting and they're like, You have to pack your shit, you have five minutes to leave the building.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: So that was the day before this like really big sketch show, and I couldn't I was like super depressed, but I couldn't cancel because like um, you know, I'm like the star of like two or three sketches, and they couldn't recast or anything, so I had to do it.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: And then all my but like all my uh that whole team came to the show to support me.
- 36:42SPEAKER_01: Oh no.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: But um the one sketch was a naked and afraid.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: Do you know the show Naked and Afraid?
- 36:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: It was a naked and afraid spoof where I had to wear like like basically I was naked on stage.
- 36:53SPEAKER_01: Like I wore like a little thin like nipple coverings and what like whack underwear.
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: Uh and it was like, so then I had to like strangle this.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: It was like basically like somebody was so annoying, I strangled him.
- 37:07SPEAKER_01: Uh, so I'm like strangling this guy naked on stage.
- 37:11SPEAKER_01: And all this, all this, and then the next sketch was me as Steve Harvey making out with five people, and then the last person, which was the same guy I strangled in the sketch before.
- 37:24SPEAKER_01: The last person, we make out so hard, purposefully, that my mustache comes off and he swat like he has it and he pulled it out and I put it back.
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: And then my whole like team from this company that I just got fired from were like clapping so hard.
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: This is a sketch in itself.
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 37:47SPEAKER_01: Oh fuck.
- 37:49SPEAKER_01: Fuck! Yeah, comedy's great.
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:56SPEAKER_01: Really speaking truth to power.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's so much fun.
- 38:00SPEAKER_02: Teenage written and I don't remember where we left off.
- 38:03SPEAKER_02: We left we haven't even started.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we haven't even started.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: We said Splinter?
- 38:08SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 38:08SPEAKER_01: So Master Splinter.
- 38:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so Splinter is a rat that copied.
- 38:15SPEAKER_02: That copied karate from a He learned karate in a cage while he was in a cage, he was watching his master.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: And honestly, we love.
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: Continue.
- 38:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: Uh then the m uh Shredder, the character of Shredder, is in love with this other woman who the master is in love with as well.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: The master is married to, and like that's actually his wife.
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: But they say they're both in love, but then the master marries her, I think they say.
- 38:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:44SPEAKER_02: And then he uh Yeah, so that then Shredder kills the master and the wife and Splinter slashes Shredder's face, and that's how he gets the name of Shredder.
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: Which like Would you call somebody with the slash face Shredder?
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: He definitely looked like a Shredder with all this shit, but Yeah, yeah.
- 39:07SPEAKER_02: Well he's turned himself into a Shredder, definitely.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: Um But so yeah, like then there's like for some reason they all the turtles break out, there's radioactive waste, and they all they combine and they big they c they get in the waste and they all turn into like giant turtles.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: And they live in a sewer.
- 39:25SPEAKER_02: And they live in a sewer, yeah, that's very important.
- 39:28SPEAKER_02: Um then And that's pretty much the premise of the movie.
- 39:31SPEAKER_01: And then and then on the like that's like A plot, like that's like the origin story, but then B plot is like, or whatever, is that um the Foot Clan, which is Shredder's gang of like disenfranchised teen boys, I think.
- 39:44SPEAKER_01: Uh they do like petty crime and stuff.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: But I'm not really sure what the point of all the petty crime was.
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: Like, is it to make them so s like more powerful than to what?
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: Like I forgot what the mission is.
- 39:57SPEAKER_01: And maybe that's the problem of the Foot Clan is that they had no core mission.
- 40:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they don't know what they're doing.
- 40:04SPEAKER_02: And that's why that's why half of them are just like, well, okay, we're done.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they just uh where people f f were looking to find community.
- 40:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 40:14SPEAKER_02: Other people But also that that place that they they like all hang out in is the most nineties place of all time.
- 40:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it was awesome.
- 40:21SPEAKER_01: It looked fucking dope.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I'm gonna do it.
- 40:22SPEAKER_02: It looks great.
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: I want to fucking find a warehouse full of arcade games and slides and shit in like Long Island City and yeah.
- 40:31SPEAKER_01: That's awesome.
- 40:32SPEAKER_02: Wait, where are you I forgot to ask this, where are you originally f uh where were you born?
- 40:37SPEAKER_02: Because like you said you weren't from I thought Oh, Miami.
- 40:39SPEAKER_02: I thought you were f I thought you were from New York originally, and that's why I was just like really confused when you're like I was born in New York.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: My parents lived uh my parents lived in New York.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: I think like um then they moved to Dominican Republic, then we moved to to Miami.
- 40:55SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 40:55SPEAKER_01: It's like a pot like a really common migration where like usually when people come from Dominican Republic, they go here to New York, and then they'll go to you know um Florida, like Orlando or my I mean Miami first, now it's like becoming Orlando and now South Carolina randomly.
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: Um so Master Splinter, uh Okay, what are other questions?
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: Master Splinter.
- 41:24SPEAKER_01: Master Splinter.
- 41:26SPEAKER_01: No, that's a Southern draw.
- 41:27SPEAKER_01: Oh, this was crazy.
- 41:29SPEAKER_01: When me and Marcia were landing in uh in London, we kept doing a southern draw.
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: She's like, oh my god.
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, Marsha, do you know that in in in the UK they call soccer football?
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: It's like we have like fucking yeah, you you on the plane.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like this British couple behind us were like they but they were cracking up, and we're like, what they don't they don't use miles here, they use kilometers.
- 41:59SPEAKER_02: Uh not true.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: They don't use oh, they do use miles.
- 42:02SPEAKER_02: We use miles.
- 42:03SPEAKER_02: We have like a combination, we're weird.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: Well, and that's why you're not in the EU anymore.
- 42:10SPEAKER_01: Uh so it was very weird for me to watch normal people and hear them talk about Europe, and I'm like, you guys are in Europe, what the fuck are you talking about?
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: And they're like, no, they're in huh?
- 42:22SPEAKER_02: We are and we aren't.
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: But that was weird for me to hear them talk about like you're traveling around Europe, and I'm like, uh, that shit is like what the fuck are they talking about?
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: But it's the same way of like how America's like, we don't consider ourselves part of Central America or South America, even though it is the Americas.
- 42:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: But like, yeah, it is and it is and it's stupid.
- 42:44SPEAKER_02: And yeah, it's so close.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: It's so close, yeah.
- 42:47SPEAKER_01: Well, especially like East Coast stuff, it's like especially Miami.
- 42:51SPEAKER_01: Miami's crazy.
- 42:52SPEAKER_01: Miami is Latin America.
- 42:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: Miami and Honolulu.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: I feel like what Miami is to Latin America, Honolulu is to Asia.
- 43:05SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 43:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: Moving on.
- 43:09SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 43:10SPEAKER_02: I don't know much about Hawaii, so like Hawaii, yeah.
- 43:14SPEAKER_01: So fucked up what we did to Hawaii.
- 43:17SPEAKER_01: So fucked.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: Uh, but yeah, it's just like a hub of like it's like a big age like Japanese, Chinese, like Asian vacation spot.
- 43:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I remember when I was in Japan, they had a lot of people going over there.
- 43:29SPEAKER_02: That was like the main holiday they would go, the main vacation they would go on.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah, because it's close and like it's really nice.
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: But honestly, when I was there, like landscape and and the buildings, everything really reminded me a lot of Miami.
- 43:43SPEAKER_01: Uh huh.
- 43:43SPEAKER_01: Of South Beach.
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: Waikiki reminded me so much of South Beach.
- 43:46SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 43:48SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 43:49SPEAKER_01: Except there's surfing.
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: There's no surfing in Miami.
- 43:54SPEAKER_02: Back to the turtles, I guess.
- 43:56SPEAKER_02: Let's go.
- 43:57SPEAKER_01: Are we on the second question at least?
- 43:59SPEAKER_01: Or like
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: Well I'm just trying to talk about the movie itself.
- 44:01SPEAKER_02: There's no qu there's no questions.
- 44:03SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay.
- 44:05SPEAKER_02: Uh let actually let me ask you then.
- 44:09SPEAKER_02: Uh what uh how many times do you think you've seen it at this point?
- 44:14SPEAKER_01: In my life, at least ten, but like mostly when I was a child, and I watched it recently two months ago.
- 44:20SPEAKER_01: And then I watched part two, part two is trash, don't watch part two.
- 44:25SPEAKER_01: Part one is good, fun, fun plot.
- 44:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:29SPEAKER_01: Like everyone has like strong wants.
- 44:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:31SPEAKER_01: Great.
- 44:32SPEAKER_02: Were you into um were you into it as a child?
- 44:34SPEAKER_02: Uh not into it, not into it as a child.
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: Were you into um the the whole Ninja Turtles like toys and uh I don't think I had the toys, I did watch the animated series.
- 44:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:47SPEAKER_01: I and I was into I did karate when I was young, so I was into that, and I guess I just really liked live action shit.
- 44:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:55SPEAKER_01: I um the movie I would watch all the time was Popeye.
- 44:59SPEAKER_01: Like that was a movie.
- 45:00SPEAKER_01: I don't and I think I don't know if that was poorly reviewed or not.
- 45:04SPEAKER_02: That's very poorly reviewed.
- 45:05SPEAKER_01: Fuck, I should have done that one because that's a movie.
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: That's a movie.
- 45:08SPEAKER_02: That's a wild movie.
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: That's a movie that like, and I watched it recently and I'm like, this is cute.
- 45:13SPEAKER_01: That's a movie, and I listen to the soundtrack.
- 45:15SPEAKER_01: Soundtrack's good.
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: Uh that's a movie that like when I was a kid, if I didn't watch it every day, I would fucking flip out.
- 45:23SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 45:24SPEAKER_01: And I had to watch it every fucking day, La VHS.
- 45:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:27SPEAKER_02: Do you know everyone's on Coke in that movie?
- 45:30SPEAKER_01: I don't want to live in a country.
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: I don't want to fucking exist in a world where you can't shoot Popeye on Coke, but come on.
- 45:38SPEAKER_01: And they all shot it in Malta.
- 45:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:40SPEAKER_01: Like and like they shut down an entire town.
- 45:43SPEAKER_01: Fuck it.
- 45:44SPEAKER_01: Fuck it.
- 45:44SPEAKER_01: Let's fucking do it.
- 45:47SPEAKER_01: Way better than like an Adam Sandler movie.
- 45:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:51SPEAKER_01: That's like actually offensive and like shitty and is a Ponzi scheme or whatever to get.
- 45:57SPEAKER_02: Like Oh, there's a hundred they really are Ponzi scheme.
- 46:00SPEAKER_01: They are, no, they like 100% a grift of like it's just a way for Adam Sandler to pay his friends to go on vacation, do this crappy thing that has no rewrites, like it's 100% a grift.
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: At least this, like they had like good costume design, it's like a cute movie, and it ages well, I think.
- 46:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 46:20SPEAKER_02: Do you think this has aged well or poorly?
- 46:24SPEAKER_01: I think it aged pretty well.
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: I feel like, I mean, you know, maybe if they made I mean, I don't know, because they did remake it.
- 46:31SPEAKER_01: I don't know what they've how they treat women in it.
- 46:33SPEAKER_02: But like I haven't seen the remake.
- 46:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, not gonna go, but they look like fucking idiots.
- 46:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 46:39SPEAKER_01: Uh the like with the neck muscle.
- 46:41SPEAKER_02: When they had like neck muscles, I was like, Who is it they said that there's someone they say it looks he look they look like?
- 46:47SPEAKER_01: Uh John Cena?
- 46:48SPEAKER_02: No, no, uh Jadakiss.
- 46:51SPEAKER_01: That's fucked up.
- 46:52SPEAKER_01: It's fucked up, but I see it.
- 46:54SPEAKER_01: The head.
- 46:55SPEAKER_01: The head yeah, the face.
- 46:56SPEAKER_01: The face.
- 46:56SPEAKER_02: They there's a comparison that they really do look alike.
- 46:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they do.
- 46:59SPEAKER_01: No, no, no.
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 47:01SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 47:01SPEAKER_01: It's fucked up, but I get it.
- 47:03SPEAKER_01: Um but uh they uh yeah, I feel like I feel like it does I mean I feel like it could go a little bit more deeper into like themes of like I feel like a very gr softly grazed themes of like why these kids joined and their work for community and stuff, and like I felt like it could have gone a little bit deeper in the way that Into the Spider-Verse did about even though Into the Spider-Verse doesn't talk so so explicitly about like a lot of people have like a really queer reading of Into the Spider-Verse of like people in different things that you're all connected to, and like and like the dad knows but he doesn't want to say it, but he he knows and he feels it.
- 47:54SPEAKER_01: Like that kind of thing.
- 47:56SPEAKER_01: I feel like there's kind of just looking back, there's a missed opportunity to like really touch into why kids want to join the foot clan, what's going on with the ninja turtles.
- 48:06SPEAKER_01: They do touch about like ang, but they do have really good, which is also like things that I really like about Avatar The Last Airbender, about like because I also grew up Buddhist, um, as like uh really strong themes of compassion and growth and when to use violence, when to not self-control, all that stuff, like is really touched upon, which I really do like, and I feel like that age will.
- 48:34SPEAKER_01: And I feel like that's why Avatar Age ages is like amazing and it's timeless.
- 48:39SPEAKER_01: Uh it's even more timeless than this because I mean it was made more recently, obviously.
- 48:44SPEAKER_01: Um it's gonna hold up, it's gonna hold up because at the center of it is like these really strong lessons of like anti-imperialism and anti-this, where like I feel like the ninja chairs kind of lightly grazed it, but they didn't really go as deep into, you know.
- 49:00SPEAKER_01: Um, but I think they do uh I think they do kind of go into it of like because they make the they make them call like I'm your father, I'm your new this, I'm your new that.
- 49:12SPEAKER_01: And um I think Splinter Splinter uh talks about uh talks about what it really means to be a father and like the head of something and like that power structure and all that stuff.
- 49:24SPEAKER_01: So that's something that I really thought was really interesting.
- 49:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's uh there's one there's one like bad line that uh Splinter says though about that I wrote down.
- 49:33SPEAKER_02: He says it to Danny.
- 49:35SPEAKER_02: Uh oh yeah, here it is.
- 49:37SPEAKER_02: He says, All fathers care for their sons, and that made me like, uh no, they don't.
- 49:43SPEAKER_01: I'm sure if you go like explicitly, like like sure some don't, but then there's a something about like they still have that in their heart or something.
- 49:55SPEAKER_01: Like I know what they're trying to say.
- 49:57SPEAKER_01: I know it just it just made me a bit like uh There's some fathers that really just suck and are pieces of shit, but there's some people who like I don't know, I watched all this, like there's like a special on like that Oprah did with the Yanla about like dads who leave their who abandon their kids when they're young and like why they did that and stuff and unpacking it.
- 50:19SPEAKER_01: And it's so much about like they didn't feel like they're capable enough, or they didn't you know what I mean, and they didn't have the bravery or they didn't care about themselves enough and they didn't want to like involve somebody, you know, like that kind of stuff.
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: So in a way that like in a way they do care because uh you know, but yeah, yeah.
- 50:39SPEAKER_01: It's tough.
- 50:41SPEAKER_02: That's a very deep conversation for this for this movie.
- 50:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, I'm sure that's what they wanted, yeah.
- 50:49SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, so Danny himself is is this kid of the of April's uh like TV TV manager, like the boss, yeah.
- 50:58SPEAKER_02: Um and he's like he runs away to join the the Foot Clan essentially.
- 51:03SPEAKER_02: Not to join the Foot Clan, he finds it and then like eventually like uh joins with them.
- 51:09SPEAKER_02: I don't know, like did you have a favorite Ninja Turtle?
- 51:14SPEAKER_02: Or do you have one?
- 51:15SPEAKER_02: Can you r can you remember each of their personalities?
- 51:19SPEAKER_01: Um I can't like I'm remembering one of them, like Rafael is like the more like leader.
- 51:24SPEAKER_02: He's definitely the leader.
- 51:25SPEAKER_02: 100% in this, he's the leader.
- 51:27SPEAKER_01: And then Michelangelo is like the angry one.
- 51:31SPEAKER_01: And then Donatello is like the fun one.
- 51:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 51:34SPEAKER_01: And then I don't know what Leonardo does.
- 51:36SPEAKER_02: Leonardo is there.
- 51:39SPEAKER_01: He's there, right?
- 51:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 51:41SPEAKER_01: I can see like yeah, I mean, I it's hard to say which one's my favorite.
- 51:46SPEAKER_01: I love the name Rafael.
- 51:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah but like, yeah, my mom my grandma's name is Rafaela.
- 51:52SPEAKER_01: So I love the name Rafael.
- 51:54SPEAKER_01: But um I also think that like my tendency is like very much leader, yeah, and very much like we gotta like stick together and we gotta follow, you know.
- 52:06SPEAKER_01: But I also have like things in me where I'm like the angry one.
- 52:11SPEAKER_01: I'm like, no, fuck this.
- 52:12SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna do this.
- 52:13SPEAKER_01: Fuck you, you know what I mean?
- 52:15SPEAKER_01: Uh so it's cool to see like both, you know, both like sometimes I'm like, yeah, like I, you know, and then there's sometimes I'm like, no, you gotta follow the rules and do things.
- 52:23SPEAKER_01: I'm like, this is why we do, you know, so um I really like that, and I really thought that dynamic a lot.
- 52:33SPEAKER_02: Cool.
- 52:34SPEAKER_02: Um and of course I love the fun pizza, whatever.
- 52:38SPEAKER_02: Maybe I'm thinking like it's probably they're probably just like four four elements of personalities that you can just combine and then like that's a person.
- 52:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like the movie multiplicity.
- 52:50SPEAKER_01: Another movie, like, there's like a list of movies where like there are women who like are sleeping with people who probably they shouldn't sleep with, like, in terms of like mental capacity.
- 53:06SPEAKER_01: Like, there's obviously one that was a little slow and she had sex with the slow one.
- 53:10SPEAKER_01: And it's like, is this okay?
- 53:12SPEAKER_01: And then like anyway.
- 53:18SPEAKER_01: Um, but that's speaking of which polit uh that's probably not politically correct, I'm sorry.
- 53:23SPEAKER_02: Speaking of which, though, Casey Jones in this, what is his situation?
- 53:27SPEAKER_01: I don't know what's his deal.
- 53:29SPEAKER_01: Like that's very that's the very antiquated part of like this guy who's like very mansplainy and very like arrogant and like so like whatever, and then he has to like calm April down and they flirt in a weird way that I'm uncomfortable with.
- 53:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 53:47SPEAKER_02: Like there's no reason for her to like him.
- 53:49SPEAKER_01: Um like if he showed some growth or something, or like whatever.
- 53:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he shows no growth.
- 53:56SPEAKER_02: He uh I don't know, he seems really dumb as well.
- 54:00SPEAKER_02: And not that there's anything wrong with it, but like it's just he's always like Yeah, like you said, he's mansplaining her to her all the time, but he's so dumb himself as well.
- 54:11SPEAKER_02: And he uh I don't know, there's like a there's there's a joke in it that uh he calls her Toots, Babe, Princess, all these things.
- 54:22SPEAKER_02: Then there's a joke in it where uh they call him uh what is it?
- 54:29SPEAKER_02: They say to him You're claustrophobic.
- 54:34SPEAKER_02: And he goes, I've never even looked at another man.
- 54:37SPEAKER_01: So like they're doing a gay joke there, and it's just like what Okay Yeah, but I g that one's a little cum like because it's like the joke's kind of on him that he doesn't even know it.
- 54:46SPEAKER_01: I know it's just And it's like not even homophobic, like it's like he doesn't even know what homosexual like that one is like I mean, and I'm not a gay person, so I can um I can't speak to if it's m fucked up or not, but to me I'm like that one's like uh because it just it all it just feels really out of place though as well.
- 55:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know, but the whole thing is like stupid.
- 55:12unknown: Yeah.
- 55:13SPEAKER_01: You think of sh uh oh man, is uh is a is a movie for about radioactive turtles that are ninjas that was made in the eighties, uh outdated, and um has poorly placed jokes.
- 55:30SPEAKER_01: I am shocked.
- 55:33SPEAKER_02: So but his whole thing is like he has he he's into hockey, you know, he has like a hockey mascod and he plays he has the hockey stick and everything, so he like saves them from time to time.
- 55:42SPEAKER_02: He has a fight with Rafael at the start.
- 55:45SPEAKER_02: Uh but it's like not a serious fight.
- 55:48SPEAKER_02: Um that's how he meets them.
- 55:50SPEAKER_02: He's yeah, he's just a very weird character.
- 55:52SPEAKER_02: But then he cr apparently he's back in the third one.
- 55:54SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't remember the third one, but the third one is uh that's the one I have to see.
- 55:58SPEAKER_01: That's the one where they go to Japan.
- 56:00SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 56:01SPEAKER_02: And he comes up.
- 56:01SPEAKER_01: And they do like samurai shit.
- 56:03SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 56:04SPEAKER_02: That might be worth watching.
- 56:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I do want to watch it, actually.
- 56:08SPEAKER_01: I want to see it because I wanna yeah, I wanna I'm curious.
- 56:11SPEAKER_01: Like I remember seeing it, but I have like no idea of the plot or anything, and I think it'll be really cool.
- 56:15unknown: Yeah.
- 56:16SPEAKER_02: I've definitely seen it like back when I was a kid, but Yeah, me too.
- 56:19SPEAKER_01: No, I remember, but I don't remember I didn't remember the plot like of like how they learned karate or anything.
- 56:24SPEAKER_01: It's hard to watch.
- 56:25SPEAKER_02: I don't remember any of these.
- 56:26SPEAKER_01: I don't even and then I I feel like I watched part two recently.
- 56:30SPEAKER_01: Oh and it was stupid, like it had like kind of no I don't really remember even remember the plot line, just that Shredder came back and they fought him again.
- 56:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 56:39SPEAKER_01: Oh, they they made like Shredder came back and then they made their own version of Ninja Turtles.
- 56:45SPEAKER_02: Oh that's pretty cool.
- 56:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 56:48SPEAKER_02: But like But no, not done well.
- 56:53SPEAKER_02: What so what uh about this movie do you uh love?
- 56:57SPEAKER_01: I think I talked about it already about like the different Eastern themes, um, the different aspects of the personality, and how they lightly graze on like people the snapshot of New York, and how they lightly graze on like why people joined gangs.
- 57:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 57:16SPEAKER_02: Do you like April in this?
- 57:19SPEAKER_01: I think that it's really cool.
- 57:21SPEAKER_01: Like, I feel like they're trying, and I feel like it was progressive at the time.
- 57:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 57:25SPEAKER_01: Like, it's this woman who's like great and she's young and she lives by herself, yeah, and she like is tough.
- 57:33SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 57:33SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, she's not like, oh my god, you know, she's not like crying a lot, like you know what I mean?
- 57:39SPEAKER_02: No, there's only there's only like one instance where she's kind of like really in trouble, and that's the beginning.
- 57:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, and it's like 30 of them, you know.
- 57:47SPEAKER_02: It's not like Yeah, that's what I mean.
- 57:48SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, like or like but she's not like crying or and she's like cool and she's like trying to break the story and she doesn't really listen.
- 57:57SPEAKER_01: So I think in that way, like it's cool, but like, you know, now April should be a completely different you know what I mean?
- 58:03SPEAKER_01: A little a lot more like aggressive and assertive, and like but definitely at the time I was like, no, she's awesome, and she hangs out with the boys, and but like that's very much of snap that's also a snapshot of like what it meant to be a strong, powerful woman is like hang around with boys, not show any weakness, not show anything, put up with men's bullshit, yeah, but love them anyway, you know what I mean?
- 58:25SPEAKER_01: Like that was very much a snapshot, but like now it's like no, we can do our own shit, like fuck you.
- 58:30SPEAKER_01: Like if you talk if you say put your babe, like we're not even gonna engage with you, like we can fight our own bat, you know what I mean?
- 58:38SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
- 58:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think it's just it's it's very interesting to see the see her there and what was considered progressive at the time, and how much has changed now to it well to an extent, but Yeah, of course.
- 58:52SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, she would definitely be very different.
- 58:54SPEAKER_02: I'm curious to see what they did with Megan Fox's version, especially because it's like the Michael Bay.
- 59:01SPEAKER_02: Uh I reckon it I reckon it was even worse.
- 59:05SPEAKER_01: Megan Fox, man, I feel so bad for that one.
- 59:07SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 59:08SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 59:10SPEAKER_02: It's bad.
- 59:12SPEAKER_02: Uh but within this movie, like uh I'm just trying to think of what we can talk about, what else we can talk about this movie.
- 59:19SPEAKER_02: They didn't know.
- 59:20SPEAKER_01: I mean I feel like we talked it all out, dog.
- 59:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:22SPEAKER_01: And we talked about 18 things that have nothing to do with this movie.
- 59:24SPEAKER_02: I know, there's not that much that happens in this movie.
- 59:26SPEAKER_02: It's like, uh, what do you think of the action actually?
- 59:29SPEAKER_01: The fighting, I really like it.
- 59:31unknown: Yeah.
- 59:31SPEAKER_01: I really like shit without guns.
- 59:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 59:34SPEAKER_01: I really like I really enjoyed guns.
- 59:37SPEAKER_01: It's refreshing.
- 59:38SPEAKER_01: I like shit without guns and a lot of gore.
- 59:41SPEAKER_01: Like I enjoy I think I can enjoy fighting scenes, like where it's actually fighting and like you know what I mean?
- 59:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:48SPEAKER_01: And like that's really exciting, and there's flipping and acrobatics.
- 59:51SPEAKER_01: I love wrestling.
- 59:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 59:53SPEAKER_01: Um, but I hate seeing like broken bones and like blood and like snap necks, and then I hate guns, like and I hate people seeing people get shot and like murder shit and gore.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_01: Like, I hate that.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_01: So I think this is a good that's why I enjoy it.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_01: It's like a good, like it's action.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_01: There's like battles, there's all this stuff, but then it's also like not insane.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_02: I don't think there's a single drop of blood in this movie, even like when he gets scratched on the face.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, good.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_01: Good.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_02: Good.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_02: One thing I do want to mention though.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_02: Uh the leader of the gang is Sam Rockwell.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I gotta look back at that.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_02: Um it's very weird.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_02: He's like a young teenager.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_02: It's young teenager Sam Rockwell.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's crazy.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_02: I forgot to bring that up, but it's it's just really funny because it's clearly his first role.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, in the second one, they fucking bring up um I vanilla ice is like seeing the thing, and it's like actually, that is one thing I want to bring up.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_02: The song at the end of this movie is so bad.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_01: Which one?
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_01: Go Ninja?
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, I think it's Go Ninja.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_02: It's partners.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_02: My partners in crime.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_02: Oh no, T R T U R T L E S.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_02: Something Yeah.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_02: It's really, really bad.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_01: And it's the it's the like late 80s.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_01: Give them a break, Yannis.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_01: It's not gonna be like the It's not gonna be fucking the Romeyomas Die soundtrack, which is an amazing soundtrack.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_02: That is an amazing soundtrack.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_02: But number 13 in the US, number one in the UK for four weeks.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_01: How do you feel about that?
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_02: Not good.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_01: But it's a fun movie.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_02: I get it.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_02: No, I'm talking about the song.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_01: Oh, the song! Oh jeez.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, well, you know, UK I don't know though.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_01: I feel like their shit, like mainstream shit and mainstream in the UK are like completely different, like music wise.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, very different.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_01: Like, I feel like you guys like more like deep cuts of shit.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_01: Like I could hear deep cuts on the radio and like a little bit more, like I don't know.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_02: I don't know, not deep cuts of hip hop.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_01: I wonder.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_02: Not on the radio here.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_02: Definitely.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_01: I've heard some fucking crazy ass grime shit.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_01: I'm like, what the fuck?
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, grime, but yeah, I'm talking about you US hip hop.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_01: No, but there's like dia like there'll be like deep cuts of like pop and shit that like did not go well here and then didn't kill it there.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, a lot.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_01: Or like artists that didn't do well here that like are fucking killing it there.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, we have a lot of that.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_02: Cause it's it's hard to bring out in the US as well.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_02: It's so much harder, it's so much easier here.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's what I feel.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_01: That's why I was like, man, comedy, everything's so much easier there.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_02: Do you think so?
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_01: I feel like um it's harder to get on a show.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_01: Like there's more bureaucracy and you have to know more people and all this shit.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_01: But it's easier to kill.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_01: Like to fucking nail, like to bl like to make people laugh.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_01: So much easier.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_02: But uh you're also bringing a different perspective than we're not used to.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, maybe that's why I am.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_01: Well, my one friend was like, British people don't really talk about race this much.
- 1:03:25unknown: Yeah.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_01: Like, because she came to my show, and I'm like, I don't even think well, I guess I do, but she's like in America, you guys talk about everything.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_01: We don't really talk about that here.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_02: Well, you did the uh do the right scene show that you you know what's the one.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I did that one.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_02: That's the one the w one of like two.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_01: And I did the other one.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_01: Wacky racist.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_02: Oh no, I'm talking about like the improv team.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_01: I know, I know, but I'm in do the right scene and then Yeah, wacky racist.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_02: So yeah, that's that's like the the extent of the London scene.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_01: That's crazy.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_01: That's so crazy.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_01: We're like, you know, it's like crazy here.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_01: There's like multiple South Asian comedy nights that like sell out and are doing great, and like there's like there's so much that there there's like rivalries between the things that really Yeah, it's so fucking stupid.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_01: It's so unfortunate.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_01: Because we should all be working together, but yeah, definitely.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_02: That's what we're trying to do here.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_02: But uh I don't want to keep you too much longer.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_02: Let's talk about uh let me read some bad reviews actually and see what you think.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_02: So this is at f it has 40%, which is like the which is like the cutoff point for for this podcast anyway.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_02: So like it's on the borderline of being like in the city.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, 40%'s like not great.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_01: I mean not great, but not bad.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_02: No, you say that though.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_02: Uh when I was researching into this, the reason I picked 40% is because most even like a lot of bad movies are above 40%, there's not a lot that's below it.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_02: So it doesn't take much to get above it.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_01: Okay, Yannies.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_01: Damn, just read the goddamn reviews.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_02: You you're questioning it.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_02: Uh okay.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna read uh let's see, we got as a movie, Ninja Turtles we be would be would make a better cereal.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_02: It looks like it It looks like it needed a little milk and mother wit poured over it.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_02: Something to make it snap crackle and pop.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_01: That is That's a stupid review.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_01: That couldn't be.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_02: That's the LA Times.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_01: Stupid.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_01: LA Times is whack.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_01: Continue next.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_02: Uh okay.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_02: Chicago Chicago Tribune said uh the results are lively and funny enough to keep adults enthralled as well as kids, so Yeah, exactly.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_01: Enough.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_02: I think it's fine.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_02: I think the movie's perfectly fine.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_02: I I don't hate it.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_02: Uh a movie that displays two traits nobody would ever associate with the Ninja Turtles.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_02: It's grim and no fun.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_01: Okay, well, that person has ever seen Joy in their life.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_02: It's it's it's it is fun and it's not grim.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_01: No, it's not.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_01: I guess like a dirty subway station is like Oh, okay, this is a good one.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_02: The unapologetically hokey humour and dialogue and characters have their charms for sheer late 80s kitsch value.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_02: Which is that's I think that perfectly describes it.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_01: So Well, there we go.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_02: Those are the reviews.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_02: And it it's got 40% though.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_02: Like I think that's about where I would place it though, for me.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_02: Going looking back on it.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_01: I would do 50 or 60.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, how good, like, I don't know.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_01: What's a great kids movie?
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_01: That's like does it make you fucking cry?
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_02: A great kids movie that doesn't make you cry.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_02: Jiman G.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_01: That's that that's pretty fucking grim.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_02: It doesn't make me cry.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_02: But it's fucking dark.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_02: It's dark.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_02: It's a kids movie, and you said what's a great kid's movie.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_01: That's dark, yeah.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_01: That shit's grim.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_02: Alright, Space Jam.
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_02: Space Jam.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_01: Is it above 40?
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_02: Uh probably not.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_01: What do you want out of a fucking movie?
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_02: I look.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_01: I was like, okay, not every fucking kid's movie needs to be Coco.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_01: And Coco, I can't I can't watch Coco like without like Yeah You know, and I'm like, I don't I just want to watch a kid's movie.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_01: I'm not really trying to do all this.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_01: Or I watched um, what is it, Outward or what is it?
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_01: The new one?
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_01: Oh with the dead, like dad fairy thing.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think it's outbound, yeah, outbound.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_02: Outbound or something like that.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, something like that.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_01: Crazy.
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_02: Space Jab's 43.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_01: So it's like uh Millie rolled her eyes.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_01: It's just like uh it's like yes, like we need good movies, but you would not know if Millie, you're here to defend this movie.
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_01: We need good movies, but we would not we would not know what a a good movie was good without the mediocre and bad ones.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_01: And that's my final statement.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_01: Do you have any other questions?
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_02: The final question is uh do you have a movie that's uh well reviewed that you hate?
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:08:43SPEAKER_01: One fucking Christmas, my dad all made us get together, were six of us.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_01: Like, and I'm like, I think I was in college by then or something.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_01: And he's like, okay, let's all get together, we're all gonna go to the movies.
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_01: And this motherfucker made us watch the part one of Lord of the Rings.
- 1:08:59SPEAKER_01: We had no idea what the fuck it was.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_01: My dad's a huge fucking nerd.
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_01: My dad's a huge nerd.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_01: And we're like, what the fuck is this?
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_01: And then um, I was like, ugh, like it's three hours and all this shit.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_01: And then the way it ends, it's like all this excitement happens, and then it's like, I'm glad you're here too, Frodo.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_01: And then like it ends, and I'm like, wait, what?
- 1:09:22SPEAKER_01: This shit isn't even over?
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_01: This shit is three parts?
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_01: What the fuck?
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_01: And then I watched part three on um I was over part two.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_01: No, no, no.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_01: I didn't watch any, I don't watch any of that shit.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_01: I was over at a friend's house and they had an HD TV, like a huge one.
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_01: HD TV.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_01: And they showed like a clip of like one of the later Lord of the Rings, and it fucking looked terrible.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_01: And I don't know if that's a testament to HD and like how bad it, but like everyone's shit was like like the elf ears were like with what like clear tape, and like it it looked like so fucking bad.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, I can't believe people watch this shit.
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_02: Not only do they watch it, they watch the extended versions, which are like four and a half hours long each.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_01: Fuck that fucking movie.
- 1:10:14SPEAKER_02: What did you hate about it?
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_02: Other than like just you didn't know anything about it.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_01: I just feel like boring?
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_01: White yeah, it's boring as hell.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_01: And then it's just like white men don't know how to edit.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_01: Like, cut the shit down.
- 1:10:32SPEAKER_01: It does not need to be this long.
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:10:35SPEAKER_01: And like, um I also don't know how to edit either, but at the same time, it's like other people will fucking edit the fuck out of me and have no fear about editing my shit.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_01: But for some reason, these guys make like three hour like why is Avatar three hours?
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_01: Um why is Titanic like does Titanic need to be three hours?
- 1:10:57SPEAKER_02: It doesn't.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_02: It could be 90 minutes and it'd be fine.
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_01: It'd be fine.
- 1:11:01SPEAKER_01: It'd be fine.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_01: All these fucking like stop.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_01: Stop it.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_01: And that that movie's total nine hours.
- 1:11:11SPEAKER_01: Make it a limited series.
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_02: No, it's it's like 12 hours.
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_01: There's four Lord of the Rings?
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_02: No, no, I'm talking like because it's more it's it's longer than three hours.
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_02: It's like almost 12 hours.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_01: Kill me.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_01: Fuck that movie.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_01: Fuck that stupid ass movie.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_01: It's also not for me, and that's fine.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_01: So I'll I'll acknowledge that.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_01: Like the creator, the creator, like they're not created, like, I want a Dominican girl, like, who's like to watch this movie and be like, this is great.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_01: So I acknowledge that.
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_02: Well, still, you're allowed to like that sort of stuff.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_01: You're allowed everyone's allowed to like that shit.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but no, no, my point, the point is that you're you should be liking like you can like it, but it's not they haven't specifically written it towards you, so you're not it's like harder to like it.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_01: That's a conversation I was having with somebody yesterday of like she was like, why don't Latinx people watch other like Latinx things?
- 1:12:15SPEAKER_01: You know, like why don't they support?
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_01: And then it's like, okay, well Latinx is very all-encompassing, and like if you're talking about a Mexican person in California versus like a Puerto Rican or Dominican person in the East Coast, like their experiences are completely different.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and like you can't just blink at the tape, and she's like, Yeah, but just because they're different doesn't mean you can't support it.
- 1:12:33SPEAKER_01: And it's just like okay.
- 1:12:35SPEAKER_01: Well anyway.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah.
- 1:12:40SPEAKER_01: Well, I have fun on your podcast.
- 1:12:42SPEAKER_01: Was that it?
- 1:12:43SPEAKER_01: Do you have any other things that I don't know?
