Transcript
- 0:17Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily Abadi here, you are listening to another
- 0:21Speaker 1: episode of Five Minute Friday from a Hurdle. For this
- 0:24Speaker 1: week's episode, I want to expand a little bit on
- 0:27Speaker 1: a story that I shared some of over on Instagram. Yesterday,
- 0:34Speaker 1: Wednesday night was absolutely beautiful in New York. The weather
- 0:38Speaker 1: was perfect. I was wearing a sweater and the leggings
- 0:42Speaker 1: and I just left pilates. It was around seven fifteen
- 0:45Speaker 1: and I wasn't in a rush necessarily at home, so
- 0:48Speaker 1: I decided to meander and walk around Soho and I
- 0:52Speaker 1: make a left onto Prince Street, and I see a
- 0:57Speaker 1: bunch of guys like hyping each other up in the
- 0:59Speaker 1: middle of the street, like the physical middle of the street.
- 1:03Speaker 1: And I look closer, I notice that there's a photographer
- 1:06Speaker 1: taking their picture. And this isn't just like a regular
- 1:09Speaker 1: group of guys. This is a group of ups men employees.
- 1:15Speaker 1: And I laugh and smile at them as I continue
- 1:19Speaker 1: on my way. I'm like walking to the right of
- 1:21Speaker 1: them on the sidewalk under some scaffolding, and the photographer
- 1:26Speaker 1: and all of the guys in Unison are like getting
- 1:29Speaker 1: the photo, getting the photo, and of course, in my head,
- 1:31Speaker 1: I'm like I don't know where this photo is going
- 1:32Speaker 1: to end up, Like, I don't know if this is
- 1:34Speaker 1: a photo that I want to be in. But they
- 1:36Speaker 1: were so happy and so inviting, and I was like whatever, fine,
- 1:42Speaker 1: So I walk into the middle of the street with them.
- 1:44Speaker 1: We take this great photo. It's on my Instagram if
- 1:47Speaker 1: you want to see it. And I kind of am like,
- 1:50Speaker 1: all right, well, maybe that's that. But the group of
- 1:53Speaker 1: men in UPS Garb are all like, you need to
- 1:57Speaker 1: ask the photographer what he does. It turns out the
- 2:00Speaker 1: photographer is a guy named Luke. He has the Instagram
- 2:03Speaker 1: account Beautiful Souls in NYC, and he is both a
- 2:10Speaker 1: street performer, trick shot kind of guy, and also a
- 2:14Speaker 1: really excellent photographer. And so he's showing me his page,
- 2:18Speaker 1: and then the UPS guys are also talking to me
- 2:22Speaker 1: about their experience working during the pandemic, so when the
- 2:25Speaker 1: streets were completely desolate and they were delivering packages and
- 2:29Speaker 1: all of this Amazon stuff and also the vaccine, and
- 2:33Speaker 1: they knew that they had to show up because people
- 2:36Speaker 1: really needed all this stuff. And I'm just sitting here
- 2:39Speaker 1: thinking about how funny it is that I was just
- 2:42Speaker 1: having another normal quote unquote New York day, and in fact,
- 2:46Speaker 1: I was kind of in my feelings about all the
- 2:51Speaker 1: news surrounding Liza Fletcher, and I stopped and I looked
- 2:57Speaker 1: up and I saw this genuine, happy, beautiful interaction and
- 3:04Speaker 1: I took part in it. And I walked away from
- 3:07Speaker 1: this great group of men feeling so content and happy
- 3:12Speaker 1: and kind and wanting to pay it forward. Right this
- 3:16Speaker 1: street photographer Luke usually sells the pictures that he takes,
- 3:21Speaker 1: and of course to thank these men for everything they've done,
- 3:24Speaker 1: he was sending them the photos and sent me the photos.
- 3:27Speaker 1: And I just loved that all of these men were
- 3:31Speaker 1: so positive and so friendly. And I realized as I
- 3:35Speaker 1: was walking to the train, like I was smiling right,
- 3:38Speaker 1: and not one, not two, not three, four different people
- 3:42Speaker 1: like if I caught eye contact with them, said hi
- 3:46Speaker 1: or waved at me as I was moving, And it
- 3:49Speaker 1: reminded me of that saying like if you want love,
- 3:53Speaker 1: then be love. If you want kindness, then embrace kindness,
- 3:57Speaker 1: then embody kindness, like you get back what you put
- 4:01Speaker 1: into the world. And so I was reminded to make
- 4:06Speaker 1: that conscious choice to show up and be the energy
- 4:10Speaker 1: that I want to receive, be the light that maybe
- 4:13Speaker 1: other people need and know that if I choose that path,
- 4:17Speaker 1: then I can expect that that same good energy is
- 4:22Speaker 1: going to come back in my direction. It was truly
- 4:25Speaker 1: like one of those magical, beautiful New York moments, something
- 4:29Speaker 1: that definitely goes maybe let's say my top five since
- 4:33Speaker 1: moving here, and again a really beautiful reminder that you
- 4:39Speaker 1: get what you put out into the world, and I
- 4:42Speaker 1: choose to put out positivity. I choose to put out kindness.
- 4:48Speaker 1: I choose to bring my smile and you can too.
- 4:52Speaker 1: My prompt for you this week, what do you want?
- 4:56Speaker 1: What do you want to receive from the world and
- 4:59Speaker 1: are you doing or part to give that back in return?
- 5:02Speaker 1: What do you want to receive from the world and
- 5:04Speaker 1: are you doing your part to get that in return?
- 5:09Speaker 1: And now a listener question.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Hi, Emily, this is Addie from Chicago. I love following
- 5:16Speaker 2: your podcast and following you on social media. You always
- 5:19Speaker 2: seem like you have so many irons in the fire
- 5:22Speaker 2: and are incredibly efficient at getting things done. Can you
- 5:25Speaker 2: share how you are so productive? How do you go
- 5:28Speaker 2: about planning your to do list each day while balancing
- 5:30Speaker 2: long term goals both personally and professionally. Are there any
- 5:34Speaker 2: certain technologies that you use. Are you more of a
- 5:36Speaker 2: pen and paper kind of gal, And how do you
- 5:38Speaker 2: go about optimizing your schedule and energy? Thank you so
- 5:42Speaker 2: much for putting out so much great content.
- 5:44Speaker 1: What's going on? Addie? You know what, I love this
- 5:47Speaker 1: listener question from you because it is clearly very well
- 5:51Speaker 1: thought out. It was probably written out in front of you.
- 5:53Speaker 1: So I appreciate you for taking the time to make
- 5:57Speaker 1: such great content so that I can come here and
- 6:01Speaker 1: give you an answer. I appreciate your compliments as well.
- 6:05Speaker 1: You know, sometimes I definitely feel like I have more
- 6:07Speaker 1: irons in the fire than others. I am one of
- 6:11Speaker 1: those people that's really content that we're all kind of
- 6:14Speaker 1: in this mindset that it's time to get back to
- 6:16Speaker 1: work because I am ready to work and I am
- 6:19Speaker 1: ready for what lies ahead. I listened to a really
- 6:22Speaker 1: great podcast today with Ashley Graham and Jay Shutty. It's
- 6:25Speaker 1: from twenty nineteen. I'll linked in the show notes, but
- 6:28Speaker 1: in it, Ashley says something that really resonated with me.
- 6:30Speaker 1: It's like, you think you work hard, now, just wait
- 6:34Speaker 1: until you get to the top, when you have to
- 6:36Speaker 1: work even harder to stay there. And so it's funny
- 6:39Speaker 1: to me because I think about how hard I feel
- 6:42Speaker 1: as though I'm working now and understand that I have
- 6:45Speaker 1: so much more to do and it's only gonna be
- 6:50Speaker 1: hotter from here with all of those irons in the fire. Anyway,
- 6:54Speaker 1: I digress tools tricks how I make my to do lists.
- 6:58Speaker 1: I would say that on the day, the to do
- 7:02Speaker 1: list is either a shorter list of four to five
- 7:06Speaker 1: items that I know are attainable for me. So I'm
- 7:10Speaker 1: not one to make a massive to do list of
- 7:12Speaker 1: ten to twelve items, knowing that I'm going to feel
- 7:15Speaker 1: really overwhelmed if I stare at it. Rather, my hot
- 7:19Speaker 1: tip for a great to do list is one that
- 7:22Speaker 1: is actually attainable, one that you know is within your
- 7:25Speaker 1: bandwidth to execute during the day, which may involve a
- 7:29Speaker 1: little bit of prioritization on your part. Also, depending on
- 7:34Speaker 1: how hectic the day is, I will choose to give
- 7:38Speaker 1: certain tasks a time period. I've talked about this on
- 7:41Speaker 1: the show before, but by doing this, you may be
- 7:44Speaker 1: surprised just how long something actually takes you to do,
- 7:48Speaker 1: versus if you weren't to give that a time limit
- 7:51Speaker 1: at all. By now, a lot of the things that
- 7:54Speaker 1: I do are things that I've done in some sort
- 7:56Speaker 1: of capacity before, whether it is writing an article or
- 7:59Speaker 1: recording a podcast, recording an intro, doing it edit, etc.
- 8:03Speaker 1: So I have a pretty good idea of how long
- 8:06Speaker 1: those tasks take. I'm sure that you have a rough
- 8:10Speaker 1: idea of what may take certain amounts of time when
- 8:14Speaker 1: it comes to your schedule, So try it right and learn,
- 8:17Speaker 1: and this way you may also find out how much
- 8:21Speaker 1: time you're wasting doing things that aren't exactly important aka
- 8:26Speaker 1: scrolling or tiktoking or who knows what. I am a
- 8:31Speaker 1: pen and paper kind of gal, although I do have
- 8:34Speaker 1: appointments on a Google calendar and I will write down
- 8:38Speaker 1: those in the scheduling format so I know what's on
- 8:43Speaker 1: deck aside from the work that I have to do
- 8:45Speaker 1: on my own time for the day. And the last
- 8:49Speaker 1: thing I'll touch on is how do I balance it
- 8:51Speaker 1: all when it comes to my personal and professional goals?
- 8:55Speaker 1: And really it's prioritizing both right, Like, yes, I treat
- 9:01Speaker 1: my work week like the work week Monday to Friday
- 9:05Speaker 1: is my time like many of you listening to this
- 9:08Speaker 1: to make things happen, But I also recognize that most
- 9:12Speaker 1: of my Sundays end up being a work day in
- 9:15Speaker 1: some capacity, so I don't necessarily have parameters as to
- 9:21Speaker 1: when I can do certain things. I might decide that
- 9:25Speaker 1: the best time for me too, I'm staring at my
- 9:27Speaker 1: nails right now, go get a manicure is on Tuesday
- 9:31Speaker 1: at ten thirty am to noon, right because I know
- 9:35Speaker 1: that Sunday, when otherwise I might do something like that,
- 9:38Speaker 1: I am probably going to be at my desk, editing, producing,
- 9:41Speaker 1: doing something with the show. I'm really big at taking
- 9:45Speaker 1: a look at my schedule for the week at the
- 9:49Speaker 1: very front end of the week on Sunday, so I
- 9:52Speaker 1: know what's coming down the pipe where I may be
- 9:55Speaker 1: able to slot in certain priorities or action items. And again,
- 10:01Speaker 1: sometimes those action items are work related, sometimes they're not.
- 10:06Speaker 1: I have chosen this lifestyle as an entrepreneur, a solopreneur,
- 10:11Speaker 1: someone who works for myself, because I feel like it
- 10:14Speaker 1: suits me and my personality type and enables me to
- 10:18Speaker 1: go after the things that are important to me and
- 10:20Speaker 1: prioritize the things that are important to me. I say
- 10:24Speaker 1: that knowing and recognizing that maybe not everyone would feel
- 10:28Speaker 1: comfortable with this kind of flexibility and need for self reliance.
- 10:34Speaker 1: You've got to know you, and you've got to do
- 10:36Speaker 1: you and that at the end of the day, how
- 10:39Speaker 1: you feel about yourself when you're by yourself, how you
- 10:42Speaker 1: feel about what you're getting after when you're getting after it.
- 10:45Speaker 1: That is uh, that's what's most important. I will say
- 10:49Speaker 1: I love answering questions about what entrepreneurship looks like for
- 10:54Speaker 1: me as well as all of your questions, so keep
- 10:56Speaker 1: sending them in. If you have a listener question, there's
- 10:59Speaker 1: a link in the show notes for you to ask
- 11:01Speaker 1: one yourself. That's it for now, Thanks again for checking
- 11:06Speaker 1: in for being a hurdler. It means the world over
- 11:09Speaker 1: at Emily a Body and at Hurdle Podcast on social
- 11:12Speaker 1: Another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
