Latest / Stugotz and Company / Big Stu-ey: Wear the Heisman Around Your Neck (w/Gino Toretta)
Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: Mikey, yeah, you will love the phone call I just
- 0:23Speaker 1: had with Gino Toretta because Gino was expecting, he's so
- 0:27Speaker 1: old school and he's in Northern California right now and
- 0:30Speaker 1: he'll be attending Stanford Miami tonight because he's a Heisman
- 0:33Speaker 1: Trophy winning quarterback for the University of Miami and a
- 0:36Speaker 1: Miami legend and he also has The Cal-USC game, he's
- 0:40Speaker 1: calling it on Saturday night.
- 0:43Speaker 2: I said, Gino, you get to go. You get the link.
- 0:45Speaker 2: And he was like, hey, I was expecting a call
- 0:47Speaker 2: from a hard line. Do they even make those anymore?
- 0:53Speaker 3: I still have one in my house. Yes, they still
- 0:57Speaker 3: make them.
- 0:58Speaker 2: So you thought we were supposed to send you the
- 0:59Speaker 2: hotline number. Is that correct? Yes.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I just expected a call.
- 1:04Speaker 2: You know, it's radio.
- 1:06Speaker 3: I forgot there's video in this time of radio.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Gino, how much better is this year's Miami team as
- 1:18Speaker 1: opposed to last year's Miami team?
- 1:20Speaker 4: You know, I hope they're as good, I would say.
- 1:23Speaker 4: I mean, listen, they started off the year, they had
- 1:27Speaker 4: some expectations. I don't think maybe getting to the championship game,
- 1:31Speaker 4: but I think they thought they were getting the playoffs.
- 1:33Speaker 4: You know, and this year, I think they're thinking playoffs
- 1:36Speaker 4: at a minimum win the ACC. And then you hope
- 1:40Speaker 4: you kind of get on a run again. You know,
- 1:43Speaker 4: college football now, it's so long with 16 games, you're
- 1:46Speaker 4: going to win it all. It's similar to NFL. How
- 1:49Speaker 4: healthy are you when you make the playoffs? I mean,
- 1:51Speaker 4: Georgia was banged up. Alabama was banged up. You know,
- 1:54Speaker 4: it's just how do you once you get there, are
- 1:57Speaker 4: you healthy enough to go on a run and win
- 2:00Speaker 4: a few more and win a title?
- 2:02Speaker 5: Gino, as a Heisman winning quarterback, what do you like
- 2:05Speaker 5: about Darian Mensah, who Miami brings in from Duke this
- 2:08Speaker 5: year from the transfer portal?
- 2:11Speaker 3: His accuracy, very similar to Cam Ward.
- 2:15Speaker 4: I like how he pushes the ball downfield as a
- 2:17Speaker 4: guy who likes to throw it deep.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I think that's kind of what they're looking for.
- 2:23Speaker 4: Obviously, you got Malachi Toney, who's You know, get him
- 2:26Speaker 4: the ball one yard downfield, behind the line of scrimmage, wherever.
- 2:30Speaker 4: He's going to have tremendous yards after catching great explosive plays.
- 2:36Speaker 4: But I like how Mensah has always pushed the ball downfield,
- 2:38Speaker 4: whether it was at Tulane last year or Duke, pushed
- 2:42Speaker 4: it downfield. And that's, you know, that's big plays. And,
- 2:46Speaker 4: you know, I like it. He seems like a very
- 2:48Speaker 4: even-keeled kid, nice kid. The times I've met him, watched practice.
- 2:53Speaker 4: So it should be fun offensively for them this year.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Gino, what did you make of Rutgers as a 30-point
- 2:59Speaker 1: favorite losing at home to UMass and then still going
- 3:02Speaker 1: forward with their fireworks show after the game?
- 3:09Speaker 3: I would say this. Casinos aren't built on winners.
- 3:14Speaker 2: But you have to pull the plug on fireworks, don't you?
- 3:17Speaker 2: I mean, you just lost to UMass at home as
- 3:19Speaker 2: a 30-point favorite.
- 3:23Speaker 3: I would say this. Was anybody still there? I don't know.
- 3:25Speaker 3: I mean, what are you going to do? What's the
- 3:27Speaker 3: pyrotechnic guys? He's already set up. He can't bring the
- 3:31Speaker 3: stuff back home. You know that. So they got to
- 3:34Speaker 3: shoot it off. And, you know, hey, I would say this.
- 3:39Speaker 4: The crowd has been waiting for a show all night.
- 3:42Speaker 3: We got to give them something. It's like you gave
- 3:45Speaker 3: them some fireworks.
- 3:46Speaker 2: I mean, the UMass fans in attendance, they got a show.
- 3:48Speaker 2: How about that?
- 3:50Speaker 4: You know, I think I would also say you get
- 3:53Speaker 4: what you pay for. They are dead last at investing
- 3:56Speaker 4: in the program and in Rutgers as their personnel. So,
- 4:00Speaker 4: you know, if you're not paying for These kids nowadays,
- 4:03Speaker 4: they're not going to come to your school.
- 4:04Speaker 2: I love the idea that Rutgers paid over a million
- 4:07Speaker 2: dollars to lose that game. To UMass.
- 4:12Speaker 4: Not going to be the first time, nor will it
- 4:14Speaker 4: be the last time.
- 4:15Speaker 2: No. We've been laughing all week. I've been saying it
- 4:18Speaker 2: all week. That Stanford, there are sleeping giants in college football.
- 4:23Speaker 1: And Stanford has the potential to be one of them
- 4:25Speaker 1: because there's money in that school. The stadium is beautiful.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Great part of the country. a decent fan base. They're
- 4:32Speaker 1: lacking one key ingredient, good players.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Yeah, a key ingredient in a hundred of them, really
- 4:39Speaker 4: good players.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, listen, Andrew Luck is back there.
- 4:44Speaker 4: They were very slow to adopt to the transfer portal,
- 4:48Speaker 4: to the NIL age. I can remember being out here
- 4:52Speaker 4: and I broadcasted USC at Stanford. It was Caleb Williams
- 4:56Speaker 4: Heisman Trophy season, the start of his season, first game.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Three starters on USC's team were transfers from Stanford. Well,
- 5:05Speaker 4: all their good players were leaving, and they weren't bringing
- 5:08Speaker 4: anybody in. So they started out behind the eight ball.
- 5:12Speaker 4: I'd probably say similar to Clemson, but they weren't at
- 5:16Speaker 4: that level. Clemson had better players to start with. But
- 5:20Speaker 4: I think that now that Luck's there, they have the resources.
- 5:24Speaker 4: You know, I mean, obviously you've got Silicon Valley and
- 5:26Speaker 4: a lot of very wealthy alumni, and it's just a
- 5:30Speaker 4: matter of investing in the program. I mean, the recruiting
- 5:35Speaker 4: pitches used to be, hey, come here and get a degree,
- 5:37Speaker 4: wherever it was, and try to win a championship. The
- 5:41Speaker 4: next line out of all these kids' mouths coming out
- 5:43Speaker 4: of high school is, well, how much are you going
- 5:45Speaker 4: to pay me?
- 5:45Speaker 2: Right, exactly, yes.
- 5:46Speaker 3: You know, you have to pay them.
- 5:48Speaker 5: Right. Gino, if a quarterback joins you guys in the
- 5:50Speaker 5: Heisman house this year, C.J. Carr, Arch Manning, Dante Moore,
- 5:56Speaker 5: which one do you think is most likely to win
- 5:57Speaker 5: the Heisman?
- 5:58Speaker 2: I like it.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Oh, boy.
- 6:03Speaker 4: I really like Carr last year when he played against Miami,
- 6:06Speaker 4: even being a freshman. They have an easier schedule, and
- 6:11Speaker 4: he has the Notre Dame machine behind him. I think
- 6:15Speaker 4: if they can beat Miami at home, I think he
- 6:19Speaker 4: will have the leg up only because the other schedules
- 6:25Speaker 4: of the other guys are very much more difficult than
- 6:28Speaker 4: Notre Dame.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Mensah should be in that conversation, no?
- 6:32Speaker 3: He will be. He will be.
- 6:35Speaker 4: I would say the thing that maybe would hold Mensah
- 6:38Speaker 4: back is Mario likes to pound the ball, and you've
- 6:41Speaker 4: got Fletcher who's really kind of unstoppable. He won a
- 6:45Speaker 4: couple games on his own last year. And, you know,
- 6:48Speaker 4: that would limit his attempts. You know, he may share
- 6:53Speaker 4: the spotlight with Malachi Toney a little bit. But, listen,
- 6:57Speaker 4: that's the great thing about the Heisman is, listen, there's
- 7:00Speaker 4: so many great players. The amount of quarterbacks that are
- 7:04Speaker 4: very good, experienced this year in college football is tremendous.
- 7:09Speaker 4: And I think if one of them gets hot, you know,
- 7:11Speaker 4: they could run away with it.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Or, you know, it's going to be a great playoff.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Run like last year where nobody really knew who was
- 7:18Speaker 4: going to win until the end.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Taylor feels like it's only a matter of time before
- 7:32Speaker 1: Deion Sanders is the head coach at Florida State.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Do you agree?
- 7:37Speaker 4: Well, they already have a coach there. He didn't play
- 7:41Speaker 4: very well, I would say. Dead man walking.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Yes. Taylor said a win's a win, but Florida State's
- 7:47Speaker 2: win was not a win. That's what he said this week.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Well, it was a win. Listen, I don't know.
- 7:56Speaker 4: I would say the jury's probably still out on Deion.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Is it not? I think he was successful at a
- 8:04Speaker 3: lower level.
- 8:05Speaker 4: He was somewhat successful initially with Travis and his son
- 8:10Speaker 4: playing quarterback. Okay, now can he build a team, and
- 8:15Speaker 4: are there enough resources at Colorado to do that? So
- 8:18Speaker 4: I would say something that the jury is still out.
- 8:24Speaker 4: And sometimes Board of Trustee members are a little afraid of–
- 8:29Speaker 4: everything that Deion would bring with him.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Not that I would care.
- 8:32Speaker 4: I mean, if you can get him players, I think
- 8:36Speaker 4: he can motivate them and win anywhere.
- 8:38Speaker 1: How do you feel about what Lane Kiffin is doing
- 8:40Speaker 1: at LSU, the SEC? We're playing sports in a courtroom.
- 8:44Speaker 1: It's absolutely absurd. But how do you feel about the
- 8:46Speaker 1: idea of guys who have declared for NFL teams leaving
- 8:49Speaker 1: the NFL and going back to college to play football?
- 8:52Speaker 3: I don't think it's right.
- 8:54Speaker 4: I think when they signed their scholarship, the rules were
- 8:56Speaker 4: you got five years to play four. They exhausted their
- 9:00Speaker 4: eligibility under the rules they went to college with. I
- 9:03Speaker 4: understand the NCAA, they changed the rules five to play
- 9:08Speaker 4: five after these guys made, made a decision. But if,
- 9:14Speaker 4: if they were going to make those teams they were
- 9:17Speaker 4: on in training camps, do you really think they would
- 9:20Speaker 4: have said, Hey, please cut me.
- 9:21Speaker 3: I want to go back and play at LSU. Hell no,
- 9:23Speaker 3: they wouldn't have done that.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Right.
- 9:24Speaker 4: So, so to me, The NCAA messed up by not
- 9:29Speaker 4: providing some kind of sunset clause to let them, you know,
- 9:34Speaker 4: stay in or go back, whatever.
- 9:37Speaker 3: They didn't do that. The rules were the rules.
- 9:40Speaker 4: They made the decisions. You can't, you know, you can't say, hey,
- 9:44Speaker 4: the rules were changed. I want to go back. I mean,
- 9:46Speaker 4: you know, so I don't think it should be allowed.
- 9:49Speaker 4: It's just another kind of black eye and then LSU
- 9:53Speaker 4: kind of just pushing the envelope against their conference and
- 9:58Speaker 4: against everybody else. I don't know. It's an unfortunate situation.
- 10:04Speaker 4: I think it's just too much chaos for the kids
- 10:07Speaker 4: around there, and we'll see how they.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Deal with it.
- 10:09Speaker 5: Gino, I'm looking at the Miami Hurricanes schedule this season.
- 10:12Speaker 5: And one game that you probably had penciled as a win,
- 10:15Speaker 5: you might be put on notice now. At North Carolina,
- 10:18Speaker 5: that trip to Chapel Hill, Bill Belichick's waiting for you.
- 10:21Speaker 2: He played ball at Carolina, Gino. You know that.
- 10:23Speaker 3: I would say this, Taylor. You know what? It's not
- 10:28Speaker 3: North Carolina the one that concerns me. It's Pitt. I mean,
- 10:33Speaker 3: if you're an ACC guy, Pitt's quarterback. is a stud.
- 10:37Speaker 4: He's very talented. I don't know if Narduzzi's usually got
- 10:40Speaker 4: good defenses. I would be more concerned with that. North Carolina,
- 10:45Speaker 4: it was a good defensive performance against a team in
- 10:49Speaker 4: TCU with a new quarterback transfer from Harvard, and they didn't.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Get anything done.
- 10:56Speaker 4: And, you know, I My daughter goes to Wisconsin, and
- 11:00Speaker 4: I saw Billy Edwards a few games last year before
- 11:03Speaker 4: he got hurt, and I'm just going to say, no,
- 11:05Speaker 4: that game is not circled that I'm concerned.
- 11:07Speaker 3: About it right now. I hate the Berkshire bubble.
- 11:11Speaker 1: If there's a second team out of the ACC to
- 11:14Speaker 1: make it to the college football playoff, a second team
- 11:16Speaker 1: other than Miami, who do you think that second team
- 11:19Speaker 1: is going to be?
- 11:22Speaker 3: I'll give you the three I would be.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Oh, you have three?
- 11:26Speaker 3: SMU, Louisville, and– And who are we just talking? And Clemson.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:31Speaker 4: I think those are the three teams. SMU and Louisville
- 11:33Speaker 4: beat Miami last year. So can they win the games
- 11:37Speaker 4: that they're also supposed to instead of, you know, they
- 11:42Speaker 4: beat Miami and then lose to somebody lesser than. I
- 11:45Speaker 4: think that those are the teams that are going to
- 11:48Speaker 4: vie for that spot.
- 11:50Speaker 3: Clemson's got Miami at home in October.
- 11:54Speaker 4: You know, so I think SMU's got Jennings, who's a
- 11:58Speaker 4: dynamic quarterbacks who's a stud, you know, I think those
- 12:02Speaker 4: teams are the ones.
- 12:03Speaker 3: And Braum is, you know, no matter what team.
- 12:06Speaker 4: He puts out there, he puts together a great game
- 12:08Speaker 4: plan and is successful. Those are the three that I
- 12:11Speaker 4: think would vie for the next spot in the playoff.
- 12:14Speaker 1: I texted you late last night saying Stanford was going
- 12:17Speaker 1: to win tonight's game by 10 points. And you, the
- 12:22Speaker 1: text you sent back was not very nice.
- 12:24Speaker 2: I'm wrong there. I know I'm wrong.
- 12:26Speaker 1: I did it just to get under your skin. But
- 12:28Speaker 1: you think Miami's going to blow them out tonight, don't you?
- 12:31Speaker 4: They came out here early on Tuesday. And, yes, I
- 12:35Speaker 4: think they want to set the tone in week one.
- 12:39Speaker 4: They got a really kind of odd schedule. They play
- 12:42Speaker 4: three games in 13 days. I think you go Friday, Thursday, Friday,
- 12:46Speaker 4: which is ridiculous. And so, yes, I think Miami is
- 12:53Speaker 4: going to make a statement here. And you got to realize, Sugat's,
- 12:57Speaker 4: I wanted to go to Stanford. I wanted their degree.
- 13:00Speaker 4: I wanted to play there. They said I wasn't good enough.
- 13:03Speaker 4: I was an hour and a half up the road.
- 13:05Speaker 4: And you know what?
- 13:06Speaker 3: I'm still bitter.
- 13:07Speaker 2: You should show up tonight with your Heisman trophy. How
- 13:09Speaker 2: about that?
- 13:12Speaker 3: I'll be down there on the field tonight.
- 13:15Speaker 4: I'll rave to the partial sellout of the four people
- 13:19Speaker 4: that they're going to have at the game.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Please get the Heisman and wear it around your neck
- 13:22Speaker 2: and wear the two national championship rings. Just wear it all.
- 13:25Speaker 2: And say I wasn't good enough to play at Stanford.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Exactly. Exactly. I like it. I like it.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Gino, I was talking to our buddy Hawk because he
- 13:34Speaker 1: is also in Northern California. And I'm looking at you
- 13:37Speaker 1: and you look happy and you talk about how great
- 13:38Speaker 1: it is there.
- 13:39Speaker 2: And it is great. You got two, not one, but
- 13:42Speaker 2: two quarter zips on today because it's 67 degrees. And
- 13:45Speaker 2: so I ask you this question. Why do you come
- 13:48Speaker 2: back to Miami?
- 13:51Speaker 4: Well, now that's– I don't know. That's where I went
- 13:53Speaker 4: to school. My wife and I went to school there.
- 13:55Speaker 4: My daughter went to high school. You know, when I
- 13:59Speaker 4: come out and it's clear– now, it was raining and
- 14:02Speaker 4: 55 and foggy last night, and I'm thinking– That's why I.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Go back to Miami.
- 14:09Speaker 4: When it's clear and you can see the Golden Gate
- 14:11Speaker 4: from up here on the top of the hill at
- 14:13Speaker 4: Cal Stadium, there's not a better place when it's clear
- 14:17Speaker 4: here to go watch a college football game, that's for sure.
- 14:20Speaker 2: You're on the call for Cal USC, is that correct,
- 14:22Speaker 2: this weekend, Saturday?
- 14:25Speaker 3: UCLA. Oh, UCLA.
- 14:28Speaker 4: We got an old Pac-12 game after dark. 10-30 Eastern
- 14:31Speaker 4: kick on Touchdown Radio.
- 14:32Speaker 3: All right.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Final question on the way out. We appreciate you doing this. Indiana,
- 14:36Speaker 1: football school or a basketball school?
- 14:39Speaker 3: Basketball school.
- 14:40Speaker 4: They're still pissed that they haven't won the basketball national
- 14:43Speaker 4: championship in a while.
- 14:45Speaker 2: All right, Gino. Enjoy the weekend. Enjoy the nice weather.
- 14:47Speaker 1: And please wear that Heisman Trophy around your neck to
- 14:50Speaker 1: Stanford today.
- 14:51Speaker 4: I'll be sipping on the red wine out there on
- 14:53Speaker 4: Palo Alto on the sidelines.
- 14:55Speaker 2: All right, buddy. We'll talk to you soon. See you, guys.
- 14:57Speaker 2: See you, Gino.
