- 0:51Speaker 1: A Hey, y'all, welcome this week's show. Today we are
- 1:02going to discuss the subject of prayer, so obviously incredibly
- 1:05important discussion for Catholics. But before we do that, we'll
- 1:08get into a few more questions and answers from radio replies.
- 1:12The questioner asks the priest, the priests themselves go to confession?
- 1:17And the answer, of course, the obligation falls upon them
- 1:21as upon the laity. Nor can any priest give absolution
- 1:24to himself. He must kneel at the feet of some
- 1:27other priests in order to secure forgiveness. He asks who
- 1:31hears the confession of the pope? And they answer any
- 1:34priest to whom the Pope chooses to confess. He asks,
- 1:38did not Saint Augustine warn priest that hearing of confessions
- 1:41is a is dangerous to virtue? And the answer The
- 1:46only reference that remark of danger has the sacrament of
- 1:49confession is to prove that Saint Augustine knew quite well
- 1:52of its existence. All he desired to do was to
- 1:55insist upon the virtue required and the priest who undertakes
- 1:58the duty. Even so, a warning against the possible danger
- 2:01does not suggest that priests yield to that danger one
- 2:04you'd give a lecture upon the dangers of drink without
- 2:06suggesting that the listeners were subject to its influence. And
- 2:10they ask is it not demoralizing for young girls to
- 2:13be asked by the priests whether they have been guilty
- 2:15of improper behavior? And the answer priests have no obligations
- 2:19to examine the conscience of the penitent. The penitent must
- 2:22do that. If a young girl, or anybody for that matter,
- 2:25has been guilty of improper conduct, then such conduct is demoralizing.
- 2:29But the confession of that sinse sorrow for it, and
- 2:31resolution not to commit again is not demoralizing. He asks,
- 2:36when will Catholics realize that priests are sinful beings like themselves?
- 2:40And they answer All Catholics know that priests are human
- 2:43beings who need baptism and redemption by Christ, just as
- 2:46everyone else. But they also know that they are not
- 2:49acting in their ordinary capacity as human beings, and that
- 2:52the value of absolution does not depend upon their personal
- 2:55worthiness or upon the personal worthiness of the priest. Meantime,
- 2:59God Will knows whether men, including priests, are actually and
- 3:02personally in a state of sin. Person asks when will
- 3:05they see the folly of confessing to such men, and
- 3:08they answer only when they completely forget their Christian faith,
- 3:11for Christ himself appointed this means of forgiveness. Person says,
- 3:16we Protestants regard confession as an intolerable burden, and the
- 3:20priest's answer, why should you worry about a thing that
- 3:23does not affect you. Let Catholics who go to confession
- 3:25do the worrying. They find it full of compensating consolations.
- 3:29Your only worry should be you're ignoring the words of Christ.
- 3:32Is recommended in Saint John twenty twenty one through twenty three,
- 3:36and he says the shame of having to tell their
- 3:39sins keeps Catholics away from the Church and from Christ.
- 3:42And they answer, how do you know? Catholics know that
- 3:45God commanded confession confession as a means of recovering his friendship,
- 3:50and for this the price is negligible. They know that
- 3:53shame did not keep them from committing the sin as
- 3:55it should have done, and they will not let fault
- 3:57shame keep them from confessing it. They know that they
- 4:01fully deserve the humiliation involved, but it is better to
- 4:04manifest it to one man who is strictly obliged to
- 4:07forgive it and forget it than to have it manifested
- 4:10on the last day, when every man's unforgiven crimes will
- 4:15be made manifest to the bitter humiliation of those who
- 4:18died with unrepented grave sins. They know that if they
- 4:22feel too ashamed to tell it, they have but to
- 4:24ask a priest to help them, and that he will
- 4:26do so in such a way that they could acknowledge
- 4:28what happened without any offense against delicacy. Their sins have
- 4:32offended God, not the priest, and no priest has any
- 4:34reason to feel hurt personally or to exhibit anger. Also,
- 4:38far from despising a penitent, a priest rather admires the
- 4:41humility and sincerity of those who confess their sins with
- 4:44deep sorrow. The difficulties of confession are imagined by those
- 4:48who have never been to confession. Very true, confession is
- 4:55fairly easy where a church has more than one day
- 4:57and like thirty minutes before Mass for confession. And I
- 5:00really don't understand perishes that do that, but it is
- 5:05absolutely wonderful liberating. The best thing you can do is
- 5:07to go to confession. So now let's get into the
- 5:11subject of prayer. We're turning to Father Spirago's book, and
- 5:15he says, under the topic of the nature of prayer,
- 5:19prayer is the elevation of the heart to God. When
- 5:22we are engaged in conversation with anyone, we forget everything else.
- 5:27This is what we should do when we talk to God,
- 5:30that is, when we pray in prayer. We must direct
- 5:32all prayers of the soul to God, the understanding all powers.
- 5:39I should have said in prayer. We must direct all
- 5:40powers of the soul to God, the understanding, for we
- 5:43must think of him, the memory. For we must forget
- 5:46things of the earth, the affections, for we must delight
- 5:48in Him. The mere thought of God is no prayer.
- 5:51The devil thinks of God, but they do not pray
- 5:53to him. The devils think of God, but they do
- 5:55not pray to him. Let our Lord's ascension be to
- 5:58us a symbol of prayer. So are the clouds of
- 6:01incense that float upwards in the air, the lark that
- 6:04soars aloft as she warbles her song. It is recorded
- 6:07of some saints that the elevation of their souls in
- 6:10prayer was made manifest by external science. They were raised
- 6:13from the ground, and they were surrounded by a supernatural radiance.
- 6:17Saint John Chrysossom says that to be permitted to talk
- 6:19with the Creator and hold familiar intercourse with him is
- 6:22the greatest honor and privilege moral man can enjoy. Who
- 6:26can fail to admire and wonder at the gracious condescension
- 6:31of the Most High that he not only permits, but
- 6:34commands us to converse with him. When we pray, it
- 6:37is customary to employ external signs of devotions, such as
- 6:40kneeling down, folding the hands, to striking the breast, etc.
- 6:46By kneeling down, we acknowledge our own littleness in God's sight.
- 6:49By folding the hands, we signify that we are helpless,
- 6:51bound by the chains of sin. By striking the breasts,
- 6:54we are deserving of stripes. Sometimes we prostrate ourselves upon
- 6:59the ground to test by our sense of nothingness before God.
- 7:03This Judith did before she went into the enemy's camp.
- 7:05Judith ten to one. Our Lord did the same amount
- 7:08olive Mount Olive Matthew twenty six thirty nine. So is
- 7:13the priest at the foot of the altar on Good Friday,
- 7:16when prayer is very fervent and importunate. The hands are
- 7:20lifted up with the arms outstretched. Thus Moses prey during
- 7:23the battle when the Israelites and Themalakites Exes seventeen twelve,
- 7:29and Solomon at the dedication of the Temple. Second. Okay,
- 7:35a parable, there we go five twelve. The priest often
- 7:39does the same during the celebration of the Holy Mass.
- 7:43The Jews have all turned there. What is that I
- 7:48cannot remember the book the name of the Book of Solomon,
- 7:50he said, He's using an old abbreviation. It's not making
- 7:53sense to me, So I'm just gonna skip it, all right.
- 7:55So let's see the Jews of old tra their faces
- 8:00toward the Temple at the time of prayer. We may
- 8:03do likewise. David worshiped toward the Holy Temple Psalms five eight,
- 8:07and so did Daniel Daniel six ten. God needs not
- 8:11these outward signs, for he reads the hearts of man.
- 8:15But we thereby excite ourselves to greater activity and more
- 8:18humility in prayer. These postures are not a necessary an
- 8:22adjunct to prayer. They may be dispensed with on account
- 8:25of weariness, sickness, or in the presence of others, or
- 8:28we may even or one may even pray while walking abroad,
- 8:32as pilgrims do, or if we happen he hear the
- 8:34angels wrong, while we're in the streets of the town.
- 8:37We may pray either in spirit only over the lips.
- 8:40As well. One may raise one's heart in prayer to
- 8:43God without those who are around us perceiving it. This
- 8:47is mental prayer. Vocal prayers most useful and necessary. Man
- 8:51consists of soul and body, and with both must shield
- 8:54homage to God. It's Hoseiah fourteen three. I believe it
- 8:59is moreover natural to express in words the thoughts of
- 9:01the heart Matthew, twelve thirty four. In the absence of
- 9:04vocal prayer, the Christian religion would lack its mainstay. Vocal
- 9:08prayer quickens the attention of the mind and inflames the
- 9:11devotion of the supplicant himself as well as of others.
- 9:15Vocal or common prayer is more efficacious with God, Ward says,
- 9:19whatsoever thou shalt ask, it should be done unto them
- 9:22by my Father who is in heaven Matthew eighteen nineteen.
- 9:27Prayer with the lips only and not with a spirit,
- 9:29is worthless. Now Lord complains of the Pharisees. These people
- 9:33honor me with their lips, but their heart is far
- 9:35from me Matthew fifteen eight. Saint Augustine says, many call
- 9:39upon God with the voice of the body, not with
- 9:41the voice of the soul. All attitudes and gestures, too,
- 9:44which are merely formali, have no value. God is a spirit,
- 9:47and they that adore him ust adore him in spirit
- 9:49and truth. John four twenty four. We can also pray
- 9:53with a voice of song. Kim's and spiritual canicals are
- 9:57an excellent form of prayer which the Apostles, it might
- 10:00us is the Colossians to practice. It is a powerful
- 10:03factor in raising the heart to God. Saint Ambrose and
- 10:06Pope Gregory the Great did much to promote the custom
- 10:09of singing in churches. In our prayers, we may either
- 10:13make use of the authorized form of prayer or address
- 10:15God in the words of our own hearts. Will suggest
- 10:19it is well to recite the usual, well known prayers,
- 10:21so as see our Father and the hell Mary, but
- 10:23not to keep slavishly to the use of forms. We
- 10:25should speak to God from time to time in our
- 10:27own words. He loves to hear us address him with
- 10:30filial confidence. The three children in the furnace of Babylon
- 10:33cried to him in their own language. There is no
- 10:36need to employ well turned phrases. How much better to
- 10:39speak to God simply and straightforwardly. The plainest language is
- 10:44the language of the heart, and it is not the
- 10:46words which God regards for the desires of the heart.
- 10:49Nor need one make long prayers Matthew six seven. Our
- 10:53petitions are not valued on account of their length, but
- 10:56their fervor. How richly was the brief supplication of the
- 10:59good Thiet rewarded. We may either pray alone or in
- 11:03union with others. The Lord exhorts us to pray to
- 11:05our Father in secret Matthew six 's five, and also
- 11:08to offer our petitions in common with others. Our prayers
- 11:11have a threefold object, that of praise, of supplication, and
- 11:15of thanksgiving. We ought to praise God on account of
- 11:18his infinite perfections. The Church gives praise to Him unceasingly.
- 11:22The glory and the sankness, and the mass that to
- 11:24todaem Todayum, which is sung on great festivals, The glory
- 11:28of patry, which we repeat so often, are all descriptions
- 11:32of praise. The thrice Holy of the seraphim Isaiah six'.
- 11:36Three The song of The angels sung In Our Lord's
- 11:38Birth look too fourteen are hymns of. Praise we read

- 15:15to try us whether we are really in earnest and
- 15:18to make us value his gifts when we do obtain.
- 15:21Them he who is truly, earnest perseveres with more insistence

- 15:49because he knows it would be presidential prejudice prejudicial there
- 15:54we go and not being a benefit to. Us our
- 15:58prayers obtain a speedier, Ane, sir if they are accompanied
- 16:01by fasting alms deeds a, promise or if we invoke
- 16:03the intercession of the saints on our. BEHALF a petition

- 16:52Other in the time of The roman Emperor Marcus, AURELIUS
- 16:56A christian legion was surrounded by the enemy and the
- 16:58supply of water was cut. Off in dire, distress The
- 17:01christian soldiers played fervently for, rain and before many hours had,
- 17:05passed the storm came up and there was a heavy.

- 17:33EIGHTEEN i think Oftentimes god turns a deaf ear to our,
- 17:37petition and the reason is generally Because he will not
- 17:39give us what would be harmful to, us or because
- 17:42we did not deserve their prayers to be. Granted god
- 17:44acts like a wise, physician, who for the good of his,
- 17:48patient will not allow him to have what would be
- 17:50injurious to. Him If god sees that we shall employ
- 17:53his gifts a, miss he of his mercy withholds him from.
- 17:56Us according To Saint. Augustine Saint monica earnestly employed Amy

- 18:14didst then deny my mother's, Request Oh, lord in order

- 18:23god often does not grant our entreaty because we do
- 18:26not deserve that. Grace those who pray without devotion and

- 18:50Vain If god does not give what is, asked he
- 18:52bestows on the supplant something, else something, better like a
- 18:56parent who gives his child a rosy apple instead of a.
- 18:59Knife he is clamoring for even the sinner does not
- 19:02pray in, vain for by his prayers he earns graces
- 19:05necessary for his. Conversion when you pray and your petition
- 19:08is not, granted and do not ascribe this unwillingness On god's,
- 19:11part but to the imperfection of your prayer or the
- 19:14poor use you would perhaps make use of the graces
- 19:17if they were bestowed on. You act, thus and you
- 19:20will have prayed. Aright god will give you some other,
- 19:23gift far more worth having than that which you had asked.
