- 0:18Music. Hello and welcome back to Easy
- 0:23Double Podcast. We are on episode 11 and I'm
- 0:26glad to say that I'm joined by both Owen and Dean this week.
- 0:30We've got some strong Internet connection connecting us all the
- 0:34way over to near Dublin, Ireland.
- 0:36Owen, welcome back, son. Thank you very much.
- 0:38It's good to be back. Sorry about last week.
- 0:40It's just I was on a plane for a couple of hours.
- 0:43So yeah, no, it's good to be home.
- 0:45Looks look nice and bright there.
- 0:47Sunshine in three window. Nice spring day in Ireland.
- 0:51Yeah, highs of 13°, but lows of three.
- 0:53So it's just peak over summer, really.
- 0:56I've got the sun cream on. Yeah.
- 0:58No, that's good. I miss you guys though.
- 1:00I'm. Glad that I'm glad that you're
- 1:03back with us. Have you had any comments on on
- 1:05your time? To be honest, I haven't been
- 1:07able show it because it's actually been so cold.
- 1:09Like I'm here wearing a big jacket but everywhere I'm
- 1:12outside so I haven't been able to show it to anyone.
- 1:15By the time it gets warm enough to wear a T-shirt, my time will
- 1:18be gone, so I'll be just a pasty pale white person again.
- 1:23Does it feel a bit, Does it feel a bit strange, like it wasn't
- 1:27that long ago we were talking about you racing in the heat and
- 1:29just how like gross that was? Does it feel a bit funny to
- 1:33think about running in that sort of weather now?
- 1:35You miss it. I actually took it all back.
- 1:38Like I used to say, oh, I hate to run with the heat.
- 1:40I'm not a good person to run in the heat, but Oh my God.
- 1:42Like you miss it when you're not like, fair enough.
- 1:45This is probably better like running conditions, but you have
- 1:48to rug up, like have to dust off the hat, the type like the full
- 1:51length tights and me jackets and big hoodies.
- 1:54And yeah, so it's way more fun to run along the beach in your
- 1:59shorts and T-shirts. That's cool, I guess.
- 2:01Not as easy to roll out of bed and just slip into a shorts and
- 2:04T-shirt as it is to get layered up, no?
- 2:07It's not a swamp. Did see a photo of you there?
- 2:10Were you at like the Gaelic footy or something?
- 2:12Your sisters in the in the big puffer jacket and the O'Neill's
- 2:17badge plastered everywhere for? Yeah, he's definitely back.
- 2:20Yeah, so my sister's plays with like Mead, which is like the
- 2:24county basically I'm from, and they had a Leinster semi final.
- 2:30So Leinster is sort of like WA, it's like the province or like
- 2:34that sort of stuff. And then so now they play in
- 2:37Crow Park, which is like a third biggest stadium in Europe.
- 2:40It holds like 80,000 people and that's like the the main Gaelic
- 2:44stadium in Ireland. They're playing that next week,
- 2:47the lengths of final and the lads team is actually playing in
- 2:50the Lancer final as well. So it's worked like, so that is
- 2:53the first time the lads are in a final in ages.
- 2:57So Dublin have won the competition for the last like 15
- 3:01years in a row. So Mead and this other actually
- 3:0515 years ago meet and loud. So there's two county teams
- 3:09played and meet one and they probably shouldn't know one.
- 3:12It was like someone threw the ball in the net and there was
- 3:14like totally, it was an outrage. So now they're actually in the
- 3:17final next Sunday. So it's going to be it's going
- 3:20to be really, really good. It just works out so well that.
- 3:23Who did? Who did you play for?
- 3:25Did you play for me or did you play for?
- 3:27So I would have played like under it, like wasn't back.
- 3:30I wasn't good enough to play with me.
- 3:31I played under 20. Yeah.
- 3:33I played under 20 but I've never made like senior.
- 3:35Yeah, yeah, yeah. But that feeds into the same
- 3:38province. I would have played club for,
- 3:44let's say, Scream, so I'd be like Scarborough and then they
- 3:48try and play for whatever the biggest thing.
- 3:51Yeah, yeah. This, this could be good thing
- 3:55mean you're going to get educated on Irish culture and
- 3:57sport here now that he's back in his home roots.
- 4:00That's it. There's more champions and just
- 4:02heart rate and splits. We'll turn into a Gaelic
- 4:05podcast. And also not to forget Dean.
- 4:12Welcome back to the pub. How we feeling when we come from
- 4:15the marathon. A bit less recovered than what I
- 4:19hoped I would be, but no pretty good otherwise.
- 4:22As so, you enjoyed a mental and a physical reset last week then?
- 4:27Yeah, we, we had a bit of illness in the house, but so I
- 4:32had to deal with that for, for a few of the days, which meant,
- 4:36and I wasn't immune from that. So had a few light days, but
- 4:40yeah, sort of back jogging now. Legs still feeling pretty
- 4:44cooked. My nothing bad.
- 4:46My quads just feel dead. They feel pretty lifeless.
- 4:50It was probably what, 2 year? What's it been a year since?
- 4:53A bit over a year since I've done a marathon.
- 4:55So I feel like maybe I've forgotten just what the that
- 4:58week after the marathon maybe feels like.
- 5:00But yeah, looking forward to sort of getting back into some
- 5:03training soon when the legs feel like they're up to it.
- 5:07No good stuff. Well, this, this what the pods
- 5:09for, isn't it? Keeps us accountable, keeps us
- 5:12turning up and switching on to running.
- 5:14I guess Evan's been battling with that for like the past
- 5:17month or so. But yeah, now Owen did have a
- 5:20question for you. I feel like I know the answer,
- 5:23but I'm going to ask you anyway. Have you?
- 5:26Did you listen to last week's? I was on the bike for 45 minutes
- 5:31this morning and for the last like 15 minutes I turned it on.
- 5:35Other than that, I haven't gotten to the race refabs yet so
- 5:38I'm totally oblivious. That's so good.
- 5:41That was the answer I was was expecting to be fair.
- 5:44Yeah, I'm sorry. You both run very well.
- 5:48Yeah, it's, it's been tough like in where people saying like, oh,
- 5:52how'd you get on? And that and natural reaction,
- 5:54being a little bit disappointed, but obviously trying to mask
- 5:57that for people who don't really understand why I might be
- 6:01disappointed, but they can clearly see that I am.
- 6:03And then they're very confused that why running a 227 equals
- 6:07disappointment. So I just and skip over it
- 6:10really and be like, Oh no, I'll I'll be fine.
- 6:12Like there's the next one and stuff.
- 6:14Yeah, it's hard for people like to comprehend, like for you that
- 6:16you put so much work in, you're hoping for a little bit more.
- 6:19But when other people see like a 227, they're like, Oh my God,
- 6:22like must be so happy tired. Yeah, it's nice that people are
- 6:25interested. They're like going back into the
- 6:27office this week and everyone wants to speak about it, which
- 6:30could be great. And, well, it would have been
- 6:32great if I maybe was a bit more upbeat about it.
- 6:35I'd like to play to America Instagram.
- 6:37That's it. Speaking of which, we let's get
- 6:40into what this episode looks like then.
- 6:42So we're back into a bit more of our usual format this week.
- 6:45We've got don't know if we're going to call it the travel
- 6:47week, the post marathon Blues week, but we're going to recap
- 6:51something. I just, I feel like it might not
- 6:53be a lot between the three of us.
- 6:55I'm going to say if we if we reach a combined total mileage
- 7:01of less than what we do this week, the three of us at any
- 7:04point during the history of easy double, we have to just call it
- 7:07a day and pack it in much mileage here.
- 7:11Well, I'm not at all so we're. Not I guess I'm intrigued to see
- 7:17who's who's the least contributor and we've got a lot
- 7:22of running news results and talking points to keep us going
- 7:26though we've got London from last Week, 2 rounds of the
- 7:29Diamond League and the this Road to records.
- 7:33And then from this week we've got the ASIC special event in
- 7:36Tokyo where there was a few records went down there to
- 7:39coincide with the launch of their new super shoe.
- 7:42There was the Shanghai Diamond League and the second round of
- 7:46Grand Slam track in Miami, which I don't know if they either got
- 7:50lucky or deliberately planned it or what, but it coincided with
- 7:53the Miami F1. So don't know if that would have
- 7:56helped them in terms of publicity or what.
- 7:59But yeah, we've got YouTube Diaries back.
- 8:02Dean is going to educate us there.
- 8:05So we look forward to that one and hopefully we'll have a
- 8:08little double trouble pop up towards the end.
- 8:11So guys, I'm going to flick through the results from last
- 8:15week because Dean and I just didn't.
- 8:17We didn't cover any of them because we literally spoke for
- 8:19like 2 hours about the race. And it was a bit of a pain in
- 8:24the bum to get the episode out because the thing that we use to
- 8:28kind of manage the audio only allows up to two hours of
- 8:31recordings. And the thing was like 2 hours
- 8:34and 10 minutes maybe. So I had to like, snip it into
- 8:37two clips and then put it back together and upload it.
- 8:43So yeah, we'll keep it to less than two hours.
- 8:45You're like, keep us accountable on that.
- 8:47So London, this was going on. Talking when you're not here,
- 8:51Brad. Owen, did you manage to see any
- 8:54of London or were you what? Were you 2?
- 8:56I saw it on. I saw it on Yeah.
- 9:00I thought it was really good and I won the better, so I backed
- 9:02that way. So yeah.
- 9:03You didn't? Yeah.
- 9:04I don't know how you are going to send me that coffee and
- 9:06croissant over here and now, so very awkward for you, but umm,
- 9:10no, that kid is good. You know he's not really.
- 9:12He's 30, isn't he? He's pretty old.
- 9:14Or not. Old much about and besides that
- 9:16was his. He debuted Valencia last year,
- 9:19the name which you said and won. Yeah, and now he's around 2:02
- 9:22here in London. 202 yeah. 2/02/27 Then second was the
- 9:28controversial Kapliemo. Kind of done himself a bit of
- 9:31justice there really I guess, didn't he?
- 9:33Because there's plenty of eyes on him to see what would happen.
- 9:36And he ran really strong for a two O 337 in second.
- 9:39And then Alexandra Moctisau or Munyao, the reigning champ from
- 9:44last year was third in a 2O22O420 rather.
- 9:49And then if we just go down a little bit further, we have
- 9:52Abdeen the Gay was fourth, I think he was silver in Tokyo,
- 9:56silver medal. Tamrat Tall of 5th and the great
- 10:00man himself also had the good run, Kipjogi and sick.
- 10:03So that was encouraging to see that Kipjogi is kind of informed
- 10:07and running well again. Be keen to see what he does in
- 10:11Sydney on the back of that. And then with the Brits, the
- 10:14first Brit was Mohammed Mohammed in a 2/08/52 I think, which I
- 10:19noted was slower than last year. So he finished ninth.
- 10:23And then there was another Brit had a bit of a tough day.
- 10:25So Phil Sessman, he was thinking 208 last year maybe, and he
- 10:30found it tough. He was in that group with Andy
- 10:33for a while that was being paced by Brett, and he ended up
- 10:35running a 214. And then ahead of him was Alex
- 10:40Yi, who we touched on was the triathlon man making his debut.
- 10:44And he ran a 211, which I think he's trying to break 210.
- 10:48But obviously once he has like kind of all the context and does
- 10:53reflections, I think he's going to be pretty happy with that 211
- 10:56debut. I don't know if you've seen on
- 10:58YouTube that Alex G had to sit down with Kipchogi.
- 11:02It was like a Morton thing. They must both be Morton
- 11:05athletes. Did you see that at all?
- 11:06I've seen it but I didn't actually like watch the whole
- 11:09thing already seen. I thought it was really weird.
- 11:10It was like pretty random. Yeah, the setup of it was weird.
- 11:13It was, it was filmed as though it was like a CCTV recording
- 11:17from the from a hotel room, but it was like entirely raw because
- 11:21of that. It wasn't edited or anything.
- 11:23They literally just filmed them both go and sit down and have a
- 11:26chat and and it's probably like the most I've seen Kipchofi
- 11:30speak and like got an actual feel for like who he is and how
- 11:34he kind of holds himself, I guess.
- 11:37And he was whether he was, it was probably a little bit
- 11:40scripted, but he was coming across like genuinely very
- 11:44intrigued into he's training as a triathlete.
- 11:47Like he kept saying, like, how was your week?
- 11:49Like bike, run, swim, like he was just genuinely so intrigued
- 11:56as to how he's how he balances it all.
- 11:59So it's pretty cool. You could tell he was a bit
- 12:01nervous and stuff and he's probably like thinking jeez, why
- 12:03is why is Kipchoge like so asked about me and my trainer?
- 12:07That was such a good interpretation.
- 12:13Please put the title as we have Kipchoge on.
- 12:19Now we probably delete it for copyright instantly.
- 12:23And no, that's cool, yeah, because like ye like at the end
- 12:26of the day, he's Olympic champion.
- 12:28Like he's the best tratley out there so I can see how Kipchogi
- 12:32would show a little bit of interest in it, but I can't see
- 12:36Kipchogi like picking up a bike and admin cross training into
- 12:39his week anytime soon are. You sure you haven't watched it?
- 12:42Because Kipchogi actually says he cycles one day a week and
- 12:46does like 2 hours. Really.
- 12:48And he was like, what? Yeah.
- 12:50And he he talks about is not in depth, but Kipchogi said how is
- 12:55Monday to Sunday looks in terms of like long run session on this
- 12:59day, double on that day. And I've never like kind of had
- 13:02any sort of insight into his training like a structured week
- 13:05like that. And he just kind of said it how
- 13:07it was. Wow.
- 13:09Is that on YouTube? Yeah, I mean cutting the chase a
- 13:12little bit with YouTube Diaries, but we'll we'll have most
- 13:15common. But yeah, it is it's like 15
- 13:17minutes. So yeah.
- 13:20Any of the comments on those London results?
- 13:22Golf I. Think it was hot, wasn't it?
- 13:25Like it wasn't ideal. Yeah, yeah, her.
- 13:27It was a bit warm. Dean, do you reckon you would?
- 13:29Is London kind of on on your bucket list before you hang up
- 13:32the shoes or not much interest in going over?
- 13:35There I think getting to Europe's like a big feat, like
- 13:39to get fit for a marathon and then to choose to race in Europe
- 13:42is like a big commitment. Like in terms of it's a number
- 13:45of days to travel and you needed time, how many hours for the
- 13:48time zone. So it's like not the easiest
- 13:50thing to it's like a big commitment.
- 13:53And so and then so if you if you know that you can't pick races
- 13:58like that all the time, then you're looking London.
- 14:01You sit London alongside the likes of Valencia or say Seville
- 14:06or Berlin. And some of those races might
- 14:10present better opportunities to run a time rather than say
- 14:13experience London. So I feel like the chance of me
- 14:18running faster might be in some of those other European races.
- 14:21So that's where, as much as I'd love to do run London, you can't
- 14:24do the ball and sat alongside some of those other European
- 14:27races, maybe it means it doesn't sit as high, to be honest, yeah.
- 14:31I'll tell you first hand. Your thoughts on that that?
- 14:33Flight. That flight is not fun.
- 14:35Like the adrenaline. I arrived home on the Wednesday
- 14:38afternoon and like I think adrenaline, I'm meeting my
- 14:40family like for the first time in two years sort of got me
- 14:43through the Wednesday and the Thursday or Friday, Saturday,
- 14:45Sunday, and even today. Like I'm just shattered.
- 14:48Like my body clock is totally off.
- 14:50But never mind training through this and like actually picking
- 14:53it up for a race, like you'd want to come over here 3 or 4
- 14:56weeks to actually I fully recover from the flight.
- 14:59Exactly. Yeah, yeah, because it's not.
- 15:00Even. And that's where it's like, it's
- 15:03like, yeah, both. And I just think like you, you
- 15:06compare that with somewhere like Japan that's on the same time
- 15:09zone as you and you can get a direct flight in eight hours.
- 15:12It's just a much easier proposition, I think.
- 15:15Yeah, fair answer. I'm probably in my head London's
- 15:18a bit more accessible because I'm still thinking that, well,
- 15:22obviously I'm British, but I'm forgetting that maybe I'm
- 15:26permanently based or semi permanently based in in Perth
- 15:29right now. But I guess that at some point
- 15:32I'll probably have a good opportunity to do London from
- 15:36being in the UK, whether that's like from being over there a
- 15:39while beforehand visiting friends and family or if I end
- 15:43up being back there to live or whatever.
- 15:46And anyway, on to the women. So we had Tiggs de Seffa, the
- 15:49winner in two 1550, Jocelyn Jepkovsky second in a 21844 and
- 15:56Stefan Hassan third in 219 flat. First Brit there was Alish
- 16:02Mccolgan, the debutant in a 2/24/25.
- 16:06And then she finished 8th with that.
- 16:09Then we had Rose Harvey 2/25/01 in 9th and other notable British
- 16:14athlete Philly Bowden in 11th and a two 3028.
- 16:18So I was a little bit surprised that Sufan Hassan was, so I'm
- 16:23going to say non competitive because I think they were, they
- 16:25ran together for a while, didn't they?
- 16:27But she ends up finishing, as you can see, over 3 minutes off
- 16:31the win. Is that how it played out, Owen?
- 16:34Yeah, so every time, I don't know whether she's told to do
- 16:38this or not, but every time they get a drink, she just takes her
- 16:41time and slows right down to sip her drink and then she's like 20
- 16:46meters off the back and then just she runs to catch up and
- 16:48then another 4 timers goes by, no drink station, she drops back
- 16:52again. So I don't know if that's what
- 16:54she's meant to do if she has to do that to like digest the
- 16:57fluids or totally get all on board.
- 16:59I don't really know. But she's constantly off the
- 17:01back and you could see that you want a SEFA like every time,
- 17:05like she'd know if she's off the back, she'd try and kick it on
- 17:08another bit to like get rid of her.
- 17:09And and yeah, eventually, like I think Stefan Justice Stan just
- 17:14like couldn't keep up the surges.
- 17:16But I think she did take like four months off at the Olympics.
- 17:19So like, she is relatively unfair regarding how fit she can
- 17:24be I'd say. So I'd say she's going to have
- 17:25another big one later on in the year.
- 17:27A nice one. Yeah, I did.
- 17:29I didn't realise she'd had all that time off.
- 17:31I think if I'd knew that, maybe I wouldn't have picked her.
- 17:35The missile. So then we had the Xiamen
- 17:38Diamond League in China and there's a there's a few random
- 17:42distances in this. So there was a one KA women's,
- 17:45one Ki don't think there was a men's we.
- 17:48The winner was Faith Kippie Aegon, who's also been in the
- 17:52news for something else recently.
- 17:54She won in a 2/29/21, which is just six hundredths of a second
- 17:59behind her own, second fastest ever.
- 18:02So it was announced last week, I assume yous would have seen
- 18:06this, that Nike are going to set up a race if an inverted commas
- 18:12race. I don't know if it'll be
- 18:13official, similar to the break in 2 project that Kip Jogi done
- 18:18where Kip Yagon is going to try and break the four minute mile
- 18:21barrier for women, which is going to require her to take I
- 18:25think between 6:00 and 7:00 seconds off the fastest ever
- 18:29time as it is right now. Which sounds absolutely
- 18:31ludicrous as a prospect, but I'm sure they'll be able to engineer
- 18:35get somewhat close at least. Any thoughts on that?
- 18:38I mean, it just seems not that feasible in my mind.
- 18:44Like I think you need to run like 343 maybe for 1500.
- 18:50And I think her PB might be like barely under 350, isn't it?
- 18:54So like, I don't know, that's just like such a that's just so
- 18:57far. And like a lot of those like
- 19:00Monaco 1500 meter races are like so well paced.
- 19:03So I sort of would have thought her PB would be pretty mature.
- 19:07And she's been racing at the top of her game for a long time.
- 19:10So I would think it's pretty. Yeah.
- 19:12I can't, I can't get my head around it.
- 19:14So yeah, I would think it pretty unlikely.
- 19:17But yeah. What do you guys think?
- 19:18I don't think she's a like it is such a big thing to break 4
- 19:22minutes for the for the mile. So like she is unbelievable.
- 19:26So in a way, you can't really write her off and everyone is
- 19:30getting so much faster. But I think it's just to like,
- 19:33maybe fate keep Jacob on do it, but someone will eventually do
- 19:37it. But I just don't think we'll be
- 19:39heard this time around. Yeah, surely like 7 seconds is
- 19:42you'd think at least another decade the way really wouldn't
- 19:45you? Because if you percentage wise
- 19:47that well, it's going to be like AI don't know 8% improvement or
- 19:51something like ridiculous like just doesn't really happen, does
- 19:54it in one go. Then again, you see the half
- 19:56marathon time go down, so who's to say she's won't just
- 20:00absolutely smash it? Maybe you never know.
- 20:03So think that that 229 what she's run for AK there, that is
- 20:08pretty much the exact pace that she'd need to run for another
- 20:11610 meters to break 4 minutes. Yeah, but almost double the
- 20:15distance and like, you know, the lactate you feel in an 800 meter
- 20:19Rep versus a 1600 meter Rep, like I feel like the K is closer
- 20:23to an 800. And so I would imagine if you're
- 20:27all out running that pace for AK to do that for another 600
- 20:31meters, like I don't know, a lot would need to change.
- 20:34But yeah, I mean, a cool concept, but yeah, I feel like
- 20:37if it was like 40 or under 404, you could probably maybe get
- 20:42there if you tried to control every variable as best you
- 20:45could. But 4 minutes too fast.
- 20:47So then in that race as well, we had Abby Caldwell in second
- 20:51breaking the national record. Now, not to discredit this, but
- 20:54I'm not sure how strong that national record was previous to
- 20:58that, but she has beaten Sarah Billings, who we'll hear about
- 21:02later is in very good form. So Abby's time is clearly very
- 21:06fast based off that in a 232.9. So new national records are
- 21:11buildings there in a 23345 and also we had.
- 21:16For for context, your 1K around the track at the VO2 Tuesday was
- 21:22about 10 seconds off that. So they're they're burning us by
- 21:26about 100 meters in that. So not too bad, is it?
- 21:29Yeah, 15 seconds actually. Yeah, thanks for that context.
- 21:34I haven't looked at it for some reason.
- 21:38I'll be pulled well with the best 1K I've ever seen in my
- 21:40life. Congrats on your national
- 21:42record. Absolutely unbelievable stuff.
- 21:49And then we had the women's 5000 meters, which was taken out by
- 21:53Beatrice Chibet in the 1427. And also in that race was Rose
- 21:59Davis. So she finished 9th in between
- 22:02Beatrice Chibet, who was first and Rose Davis in 9th.
- 22:05Everyone was Kenyan or Ethiopian and then beyond Rose Davis as
- 22:10well. So I mean, it's probably
- 22:12something we'll never be exposed to.
- 22:14But how they put these fields together is mad, isn't it?
- 22:17Because you look at Grand Slam track and there's not that many
- 22:21Kenyans and Ethiopians getting a shout there.
- 22:23It's, it's like lots of the US based in the European guys who
- 22:27like have big profiles and then loads of these Kenyan, Ethiopian
- 22:31athletes are not these Diamond League races, but lots of the
- 22:35names. I don't know if I'm just not a
- 22:38big enough nerd. Lots of the names don't mean too
- 22:41much to me. The depth in Kenya and Ethiopia
- 22:44is just, is that the that I just can't keep up with all the
- 22:47people that are running fast essentially.
- 22:49Yeah, and presumably someone is, or someone's a manager to them
- 22:53that knows that they're fit enough to be in these races.
- 22:55But yeah, where Australia might have three or four and similar,
- 22:59in the UK there's what feels like 30 plus, doesn't it?
- 23:04So Rose actually broke her own national record in that run to
- 23:08run a 1440.83, which is, again, if I draw a comparison to myself
- 23:14struggling to break 15 minutes, she's absolutely shifting.
- 23:18So that's an incredible, incredible run there.
- 23:21I can't remember what our previous, what the previous
- 23:23national record was. Was she broken it by more?
- 23:26I didn't think, I thought maybe like 1444, maybe something
- 23:29around that low 1440s. I thought it was.
- 23:31It was 14. It was 1441 I think.
- 23:34Yeah, it was June trying to qualify for the Olympics, wasn't
- 23:37it? There was more the Sky ring in
- 23:39the race to breaking 15 minutes for the first time in the 1455
- 23:44and Georgia Griffiths a bit Georgia Griffith a bit further
- 23:46back in 1517. I'm going to skip the this at
- 23:50the 01 because. Wait, actually actually
- 23:53interesting. When Yanni, is he like a
- 23:56challenger or is he actually in the grand soundtrack?
- 24:00I think maybe he was a challenger, wasn't he?
- 24:02OK, so he's not tied he. Must have been because he
- 24:04wasn't. Crazy doing like that road
- 24:08record thing in Germany even though he's tied to I guess
- 24:10instead of the Miami thing. Yeah, I think he was a
- 24:13challenger, but he didn't he win it.
- 24:15Did he win that first one? Yeah, the handy 100 grand.
- 24:19Fair play to stay in peak shape. So then go and back it up having
- 24:24100 grand in your pocket and not just enjoy yourself for a week
- 24:27or so. But it's a long season, isn't
- 24:28it? And he's probably thinking about
- 24:30how much more money he can make if he stays at the top of his
- 24:32game. So then on to this week's
- 24:34results. We had another Diamond League in
- 24:37China, in Shanghai. But it was actually, I was, I
- 24:40watched this on the live stream. It was called Shanghai Diamond
- 24:43League, but it was 220 KS of Shanghai in a place called Kyao
- 24:51and it also clashed with the Grand Slam track for the first
- 24:55time. So I mean, I'm not that bothered
- 24:57to start digging out viewing numbers, but I will be
- 25:00interested to see kind of how they matched up and the first
- 25:03weekend there. And I don't know if you guys
- 25:06have an opinion like kind of which drew your attention or
- 25:10your interest more from a results perspective or what you
- 25:13would have been bothered to follow in there between the two
- 25:15of them? Personally for me, because there
- 25:18was an Irish guy in grandson track I would have been more
- 25:20interested in. Yeah, I don't think the the
- 25:24field that the Diamond League was amazing and obviously Grand
- 25:28Slam just have that those signed athletes year round, don't they?
- 25:31So you know that like Josh Kerr, Cole Hacker, Nagus, Graham
- 25:37Fisher, Jess Hall, you just know that those people are going to
- 25:40be there every single time along with I know our review of it
- 25:44last time was kind of like a little bit negative, but then
- 25:47they're going to have challenges each time who's basically like
- 25:50the most informed people at that moment and bring them into race
- 25:53kind of like the world's best. And then when you compare it to
- 25:57there's a lot of diamond leagues what go on on this.
- 25:59So they can't pull the big fields every single time and
- 26:03especially when they're but in the morning like China, when
- 26:06there's a lot of ones in Europe, the athletes will be waiting for
- 26:08those to come around later in the season.
- 26:10So I think Grand Slam won this one for me.
- 26:13I think that's the main reason why none of the big people go to
- 26:16China, because you're coming from Europe or America.
- 26:18It's the travel. Like it's crazy.
- 26:20The only people that can go is Australians really.
- 26:23Speaking of which, you've just led me into in the women's 800
- 26:26meters there, Sarah Billings ran a second fastest all time in a
- 26:30157.83. So I was watching this at the
- 26:35time and she, she just ran a really smart race.
- 26:38Like she stayed onto the pack for a while.
- 26:40And then in the last 200 there's those who'd kind of pushed the
- 26:44pace towards the front started to fade.
- 26:46Sarah just stuck on the on the rail and kind of drove home and
- 26:51like ran all the way through most of the packs she ran
- 26:54through for 2nd. So I think previous to that 157,
- 26:58her PB was 159 something, which in in the 800 world that's like
- 27:03a massive jump to take over a second off your PB, isn't it?
- 27:06Yeah, it's crazy. Her finishing.
- 27:08She's gotten so strong. You can see like the fine like
- 27:12100 meters when her head starts rocking, she just like I know
- 27:15she just pushes through and yeah, creditor like 57 is
- 27:19getting up there with the best. Who has the Aussie?
- 27:21Yeah, they said it was an older name.
- 27:25Was it? Is it someone Bisset?
- 27:27No. Yeah, yeah.
- 27:28Katrina Bisset. Yeah.
- 27:30So it was maybe like 2020, maybe 2021.
- 27:33Which in today's terms, that's a long standing record really,
- 27:36isn't it? Well prior to that it stood for
- 27:39like decades. I think the Aussie 800. 157.8.
- 27:44Also the the Aussie record is 157.78.
- 27:49Yeah. She's just Arthur.
- 27:52I know it's a change of it. So it was funny because you
- 27:55know, when you see the athletes come through the line a lot of
- 27:57times, like not that long ago, a lot of the time there's not that
- 28:02that much reaction like in terms of being overjoyed.
- 28:07But like you could see as soon as she like hit the line, looked
- 28:10at the clock like smile beaming on her face straight away so you
- 28:13could see what it meant for her. And then the other results there
- 28:16was there was a men's 5000 meters run back one by Aragawi
- 28:21in a 1250. And that was it was a good bat,
- 28:24good battle by three Ethiopians up the front there.
- 28:26They kind of pushed each other all the way.
- 28:29Aragawi, I think about 4:50 to go, just hit the front and
- 28:33started driving and servers, compatriots kind of went with
- 28:37him and it was very surgy along that back 300 straight.
- 28:42And Aragawa, as you're watching him and you're thinking he's
- 28:46made his last kick, he's emptied the tank, someone pulls up on
- 28:50him and he just finds another gear.
- 28:51He's a gritty little runner isn't he's only like he looks
- 28:55very short and elbows swinging everywhere but his glides across
- 28:59it. Also in that race you had Brian
- 29:02Fay, who has the Irish Melbourne connection with MTC back in 10th
- 29:07in a 1312 and Jude Thomas in 16th in 1332.
- 29:12Which is it kind of shows the realities of like travelling
- 29:16internationally week on week to try and race at the highest
- 29:20level as well as training in between to keep you shape.
- 29:24Because Jude was in Ballarat there the weekend before winning
- 29:27the the road mile champs. Looking like easy as anything.
- 29:30And then, yeah, just goes over to China there, and probably he
- 29:35would be happy to say he's a little bit disappointed with
- 29:38that run. Moving on to the Grand Slam
- 29:41track then. I feel like it's hard to cover
- 29:43these results because there's so many in a good way.
- 29:46They put on so many races, don't they?
- 29:48But the main ones from my point of view, and feel free if you
- 29:52want to speak about others, is the 18 the 8th 1500 crossover in
- 29:57which Josh Kerr got himself some redemption.
- 30:01He must have heard me slagging him off.
- 30:02So any other point to prove from the last one.
- 30:04And he won the 1500 in a 334 from Yard Nagus in 2nd and Cole
- 30:10Hacker in 3rd. And then when the 800 came
- 30:13around the next day it was marked the 800 specialist Marco
- 30:17a rock in a 14369 from a Botswana athlete who have not
- 30:21heard of before. Cathode Bogely Hein Guru in a
- 30:2514375 and Australia's very own people back in 3rd in a 144.13.
- 30:33So how that stacked up for the overall standings of that 815
- 30:38hundred discipline was Care 1A Rock second, Hein Guru, the Bots
- 30:43one and 3rd, Negus 4th all 5th and himself a tasty 30,000 U.S.
- 30:50dollars. Hawker the Olympic champ in 6th
- 30:53and Timothy Chariot in 7th. So when you look at the results
- 30:57like that and you see Pete Bowles beating and Cole Hawker
- 31:01and Timothy Chariot, it's shows the kind of form he's in.
- 31:04Yeah, he's moving. All right.
- 31:05What's the price drop? So first gets would you get
- 31:09money for winning for let's say Josh Kerr winning the 1500,
- 31:13Would he have got money for that or is it just the total combined
- 31:16815 hundred you get paid for? Yeah, it's just the what the
- 31:19total standings are, so it must mess with you to be fair.
- 31:23So like when you think Costco's won that 3K on the first day,
- 31:27he'd be thinking shit like, what have I got to do tomorrow to
- 31:30secure 100K? Like if I finish second, then
- 31:35Fisher has to win. He has to beat me by more than
- 31:37this much. And you, you probably, I don't
- 31:40know, are you doing those kind of calculations as you run in
- 31:43the second race or you just run as hard as you can?
- 31:45It must be hard. What does second get?
- 31:48How much money does second get? Does it have I?
- 31:50Don't know how much it drops off to be fair.
- 31:52Let me try a look or you have a look.
- 31:53Or yeah, that class current when he won his last 100 meters was
- 31:59like 11.89 seconds, which is just absolutely nuts.
- 32:05And like fair enough that I I like, I sort of like the way
- 32:08it's actual proper racing. So the winning time was only
- 32:11817, but Oh my God, they kick it down so, so hard.
- 32:15I think the last 200 was 25 point something and then the
- 32:19last 100 was 11. Like that is just mind boggling
- 32:24how fast that is. It's a lot more fun than just a
- 32:28like a pace race where like the the guy that's just done a heap
- 32:32of training is going to win. Like you really like these are
- 32:35really hard to pick these races, like particularly the men's
- 32:38middle distance ones, like where they're not sort of going out
- 32:42just all guns blazing. It's like, yeah, such a good
- 32:44done. And even the 815 hundred races,
- 32:47like, I don't know, the 800 guys seem to be on top.
- 32:49But then the 1500 guys are making their race is a bit
- 32:52stronger now. Like it's, yeah, it's fun
- 32:56viewing as a spectator for sure. Did you guys think Peter?
- 32:59Man. Sorry Ron, did you think that
- 33:01Peter Bowl maybe like eased up a bit in his 1500?
- 33:05Did you see him like give up a spot towards the end?
- 33:08He didn't like he backed off a bit towards the in like the
- 33:11final like 1050 meters of the 800 too.
- 33:15But it didn't cost him a spot. I think he still held on for 3rd
- 33:17but like I think he cost himself a spot and I it's like that's
- 33:21could be out of money like I'd be dipping I reckon.
- 33:24But I think he still finished like fourth maybe overall.
- 33:27Yeah, and this is what I was thinking when I was watching the
- 33:30the distance one the three K5K1. So cost Green won that first
- 33:35night in the 3K and then from I think Fisher got second in it,
- 33:39didn't he? Yeah, he just out dipped Fisher.
- 33:43So then on the last day when they're in the 5K, it's kind of
- 33:47a jog, jog fest for 2 miles. And then after about 3K, Fisher
- 33:53just absolutely puts the hammer down like randomly.
- 33:56And they're obviously all thinking like, oh, do we go?
- 33:58Do we not go? And usually if someone makes a
- 34:01move that far out, people probably don't go with it and
- 34:04then they think we're going to reel them back in anyway if we
- 34:07all start working together. But because they're not, they're
- 34:10not racing. I mean they are racing for the
- 34:12win but then the racing when it becomes Fisher gone they're all
- 34:16just racing each other there and then aren't they the almost like
- 34:19right off Fisher but then Costco is probably thinking oh shit
- 34:23that's my 100K running away from me here do a go after it and try
- 34:27and go for the win. Or do I kind of secure 2nd and
- 34:32just try and beat everyone who I'm with here and take the
- 34:35whatever it is 70 K. So it is a mad dynamic.
- 34:39But Fisher ran a 357 solo for that last mile once he left the
- 34:44group and he was, he was pumping the crowd up all the way up the
- 34:48finishing straight as well. He's stuff.
- 34:51He's a different beast, isn't he at the minute?
- 34:53He's hard back because he's he's got such a good kick now, but
- 34:56he's just so freaking fit as well.
- 34:58So he's like the perfect runner in a way.
- 35:01And so, yeah, like you have to hand down your Costco like what
- 35:04a run, like even that 3K. Yeah, he's he's at the moment
- 35:09and I think he's wet and New Balance Manchester, he's
- 35:13training with them now and which is good as well.
- 35:16Was he with MTC for a bit? Is that or managed by MTC?
- 35:20So I'm pretty sure he's still managed by MTC, He's just when
- 35:24he's in Europe or around Ireland, he's going to.
- 35:27He just trains with the New Balance Manchester group.
- 35:30He was. Over in Melbourne last year,
- 35:31wasn't he training? Yeah, he was training over here
- 35:34for a little while, but yeah, I don't know what's the story
- 35:36there. And 2nd place you would have got
- 35:3850,000 U.S. dollars for that weekend which is crazy.
- 35:42Remember we had a conversation a little while ago, I was telling
- 35:45you I'd seen on on X like the Ireland athletics funding
- 35:49allocations or whatever. And for the year he'd been
- 35:52allocated €18,000. So he's just like quadrupled his
- 35:57funding there from one race. And then you think there's four
- 36:01of these and they come month on month on month.
- 36:03So those the the races have the opportunity to like fishes just
- 36:08to earn 200 grand in 200 grand US in four weeks.
- 36:12But like that's where this event, this competition is so
- 36:15good, like Fisher, like I nearly kick him off it because he's
- 36:19just going to clean up like 400 grand or whatever.
- 36:22But for them, like smaller athletes, like for legs of
- 36:24Costco in there, like that is massive money for him.
- 36:27Like that will fund the next two years training whatever.
- 36:30Because as a runner, like as you see, Ireland give him SFA like
- 36:34sweet football, but a New Balance.
- 36:37I don't know how much he's getting off New Balance.
- 36:39Fair enough. He gets free kit and all that
- 36:40stuff, but it's still very hard to you're constantly living in a
- 36:43suitcase, like you're living abroad the whole time.
- 36:46Like you're like there's six. There's loads of like money
- 36:48going out and not much money going in.
- 36:51So for likes of him, like it's massive.
- 36:53And I do feel like a bit of a hypocrite because when we
- 36:56reviewed the last one, I did say all's they were going on about
- 37:00was 100K for the winner, 100K for the winner.
- 37:03But I guess this is where the story element of it comes in
- 37:06because there are kind of those lower profile athletes who can
- 37:09get such a big payday like that and you can kind of see what it
- 37:13can do for their careers. But it didn't feel like it was
- 37:16forced down your throat as much this time.
- 37:17Maybe that was a deliberate thing and because everyone knows
- 37:21how much money is involved in it now and you can just kind of
- 37:23take it all in. So then just quickly to go over
- 37:27the women's results in the 800 and the 1500 discipline highly
- 37:31won the 1500 and a 40696 with Nikki Hilts second, they ran a
- 37:39407.08 and with Telchi in 3rd and a 407.46.
- 37:44Then in the 800 version Mary Mora, and I think in that she
- 37:50must be a racer because in the first meet in Kingston she was a
- 37:54DNS I think, but she's bounced back here and won the 800 in a
- 37:5815951. Nikki Hilt second again in a
- 38:0215975 and Hilu third in a 15984 which meant that overall it was
- 38:07Hilu from Hilts from Mary Maura Witelchi 4th and Jess Hull
- 38:13representing Australia in 5th. So I think she would have.
- 38:17Is that where Pete Ball came fifth overall and then they
- 38:21would have shared a payday there which, even though you finished
- 38:24fifth, is rather tasty in itself. 20 grand.
- 38:26It's worth the trip, yeah. Absolutely they pay down to 7th
- 38:30doesn't if you're 70 till think you get like 12 1/2 U.S. dollar.
- 38:34Yeah, I think even if you like last you got like 10 grand or
- 38:36something. That's unreal.
- 38:38Yeah, 8 gets 10 grand, a 12.6 million prize pool across the
- 38:42season. Like how are they getting that?
- 38:45No way will they ever make that money back.
- 38:47I'm sorry, no matter how big running gets, but that's just
- 38:49crazy. Well I don't, I don't even want
- 38:51to say the name of it because it's rattled me and watching all
- 38:54the coverage but whichever the drink brand which is endorsing
- 38:58them. I've not heard of it pre Grand
- 39:00Slam track, but I'm going to contradict myself again here on
- 39:049 in four weeks time I'll be stood with a can of it in my own
- 39:07hand or something. But it's it's cringing me out so
- 39:11much because they're all fucking stored with a can of it in the
- 39:14hand that like any given opportunity that we can't even
- 39:17MJ, he's like, however old he is and he's doing his interviews
- 39:21and like a snap back and a can of this drink, like holding it
- 39:23up so the camera can see it with it perfectly placed so that the
- 39:27logo is facing outwards. And obviously it's paying them a
- 39:31lot of money to do it, but it's just so obvious.
- 39:33And it's like, oh, come on, You must be able to like get the
- 39:36message across in a slightly more subliminal way.
- 39:39Even like Cooper tea. I find them so authentic.
- 39:43And he like he's on his YouTube, he's just himself, but then
- 39:46doing brand placement stuff in their videos as well.
- 39:49And you see him like, what's the thing out so that the brand
- 39:53label is on the outside and like you can see him looking at the
- 39:56can as he's doing it to make sure he knows where it is.
- 39:58And then he opens it. It's like, come on.
- 40:00But the. Same can get paid.
- 40:02That's what I mean, Yeah. So, but linking back to what you
- 40:05said, whichever brand this is, they must be paying a lot of
- 40:08money for that. Yeah, definitely.
- 40:11So the last set of results to cover off is the ASICS Tokyo
- 40:15Speed Race, which was a special event put on by ASICS in Tokyo
- 40:20to coincide with the launch of their new shoes.
- 40:23And this is quite clever Marks and really isn't.
- 40:25It was a bit of a risk because they had a lot of people run
- 40:28national records and area records, which obviously just
- 40:31sells the shoes in itself. They don't even need to force it
- 40:35down your throat. People will go asking and be
- 40:37intrigued, what are those shoes? Everyone's just ran the records
- 40:39and what happens if everyone runs shit time?
- 40:43I mean, we don't need to talk about it because they didn't,
- 40:45but. They don't do that.
- 40:47I'd say they test these like the boys have been running these
- 40:49shoes, I said for the past like 12 months.
- 40:52Like I said, they've no, they know they're good.
- 40:53Yeah, and ASICS probably would have put on bonuses for all of
- 40:57these records as well. Wouldn't need to incentivize the
- 40:59athletes to try and like peak and taper properly for these
- 41:02races to try and run a fast time.
- 41:04Absolutely, and I think it showed up better than the Adidas
- 41:07one the week previous. I don't know because they even
- 41:10ASIC even released a new super shoe.
- 41:11So there's the medicine speed sky many speed edge and then
- 41:15meta speed Ray, which I think is like specifically for elites and
- 41:20it's got I think it's an American race issue again, But
- 41:23yeah, they just go off. They're so like them.
- 41:26Shoes as incredible. Results here.
- 41:28Then Izzy Back Doyle ran a new Australian national record and
- 41:32an area record in a 3047 to improve on our own national
- 41:37record from 3112. So what's that 25 seconds?
- 41:41That's a big jump. 10K as well. So that's a ridiculous run.
- 41:46There is. He's just like up to madness
- 41:48constantly. That's two weeks, about two
- 41:51months post marathon, which is motivating given that we're like
- 41:56a week post marathon and feeling a bit sore and sorry for
- 42:00ourselves. So sort of and actually raised
- 42:02to three K two weeks after. I'm not quite ready to do that,
- 42:06but I need to start getting training again to try and run a
- 42:08PB. Well, I think there's a lot said
- 42:11for like the professional athlete, like, so when did you
- 42:13boys get back to work after the marathon?
- 42:16So you ran the marathon on Sunday.
- 42:17When did you start working again?
- 42:18Tuesday, Ryan, Tuesday. Yes, Sam.
- 42:21Like she would have had her feet up for the following week.
- 42:24Like they just recover so much faster because they just don't
- 42:26have the outside stresses of you guys like your lives.
- 42:29So I'd say give you guys a. Special feet up or doing it.
- 42:32She would have been doing a session probably by the time I
- 42:35was still limping round. But like, if get what I mean.
- 42:38Like, she just doesn't have them.
- 42:40Like, stresses Like, Ryan, you're a father now.
- 42:42Like, you have a cat. It's like she wouldn't have to
- 42:44deal with that sort of stuff. So yeah, if you just got rid of
- 42:49the cat, like you never know what could happen.
- 42:50So less emotional baggage with them and animals.
- 42:54Like you have to walk that cat day in, day out now.
- 42:57Like there's so much extra stress in your life.
- 42:59Thank God when I went on my double Trouble about making
- 43:03excuses for races, I didn't include cats in there because I
- 43:07can actually use the cat as an excuse still.
- 43:13Sam Clifford also ran a record on the men's side of things in
- 43:17the 28. I think it was 26.
- 43:19I haven't actually done my thorough research on this, but I
- 43:24think on the track Jack Rain has ran like 20.
- 43:27Is it 27 though? Yeah. 272711 or something.
- 43:31Yeah. So I mean, just to highlight
- 43:34that this is from the track records, but still, no one has
- 43:39ever ran faster on the road than Sam Clifford from an Australian
- 43:43point of view. So amazing run still.
- 43:45I think he ran 27 something. Sam Clifford.
- 43:48Yeah, he ran 2734. Yeah, I've got my time way off
- 43:52there. Then 2734 sounds a bit faster.
- 43:55Yeah. And I think Brandon, maybe he'd
- 43:57run like 2743. I think he had the previous.
- 44:00What's the record or area record?
- 44:02Oh yeah, Would that, is that in Tasmania?
- 44:04I'm sure that rings a bell. Now you're saying that.
- 44:06Maybe not, but. I think so.
- 44:08I think so, yeah. And then Reese, I've just
- 44:11blanked his surname. Reese Reese Edwards backed up
- 44:15from Ballarat the week after and ran 2932, which I mean, Reese
- 44:21works full time as well, so he doesn't quite have the luxury of
- 44:24that full recovery and he's gone on to Japan to run sub 30 a week
- 44:29after run the 216. Does he even work full time?
- 44:33Let's be real, he's like a physio isn't he?
- 44:35So he probably just kicks his hours.
- 44:38He's living the most professional life to.
- 44:40Japan on a holiday all week freshes the Daisy, no?
- 44:44He's a professional athlete, Lucky, real.
- 44:46Yeah, I mean he's he's probably taken some well timed annual
- 44:49leave in between those two races as name gone.
- 44:52I'll pick 6 grand up in Ballarat and then ASICS are going to pay
- 44:56for me to fly to Tokyo and then I'll probably get paid whatever
- 45:01it is. Probably won't be a lot, but
- 45:02just to stand on the start line there and then he gets to walk
- 45:06away with a nice juicy PB from it and a pair of brand new super
- 45:09shoes. So the one thing I will say, and
- 45:11this is absolutely nothing to do with the people who've run those
- 45:15times because I thought this like before any of the races
- 45:18finished. But I was like, if these records
- 45:20are getting answered and stuff here.
- 45:23Has wavelengths ever been used on road races before?
- 45:27Because they had like, I mean, the loop doesn't matter, but the
- 45:30loop was perfect and that's fine.
- 45:33But they had the width the use of wave lights on the road
- 45:35there, and unless I'm mistaken, that might be the first time
- 45:39they've ever used wave lights on the road.
- 45:41I didn't actually see any of this, so I don't even know if
- 45:44they if they had wave lights on the road.
- 45:45Yeah, that would probably be a first, which is pretty cool in a
- 45:48way, but sort of takes away from the actual racing.
- 45:51Yeah, I mean, you should have seen the pack as he was in there
- 45:53was like picture Breaking 2 from Kip Jogi and she was just in a
- 45:58pack like that. It looked unbelievable but like
- 46:00I'd love to just get in there and probably blow up the last
- 46:04three K anyway. No wonder she's run like an
- 46:08unbelievable time because it just looked like the most
- 46:11idyllic racing conditions you could ask for.
- 46:13I think it's like a 1.3 K circular loop and they ran it
- 46:17obviously however many times they would need to for the five
- 46:21in the 10K. But on the on the 10K in the
- 46:23men's race, there was a guy so at the end of the loop on the
- 46:26last lap, they had to like turn off left to run through the
- 46:29finish line. And this guy obviously forgot
- 46:32what lap he was on and just he was in.
- 46:34There's like three of them going for the win as well and he just
- 46:36ran straight on the two turn left.
- 46:39Finished thousand with him for 10 the wrong way there.
- 46:44I seen the five lad won the five Ki think he ran like 13 flat but
- 46:49umm he's he's a Kenyan or Ugandan or whatever East
- 46:53African. And the poor chap, he had such
- 46:55little English and the commenta the lad asked him questions like
- 46:59interview him after the race was asking him the most stupidest
- 47:03questions ever. Like the poor chap didn't have a
- 47:05clue what he was asking him. And he was like oh how do these
- 47:10model of shoes compared to the previous ones.
- 47:13And the chap literally had the notion and you could see he was
- 47:15just trying to say like they weren't good or like he felt
- 47:19good but oh it felt so bad for the chap.
- 47:22Yeah, they were using the translator as well, I think,
- 47:24weren't they? He didn't have a translator.
- 47:27He was on his own, poor guy. So that concludes the mammoth
- 47:30results section. We're back up to date on the
- 47:33results in the news now and we shall not miss another week of
- 47:37news because that is a long process to catch up on two
- 47:40weeks. Actually, just one more thing,
- 47:42the weekend of I think it was London, an Irish guy, Peter
- 47:47Lynch ran Dusseldorf marathon and he broke the Irish marathon
- 47:51record. He 20930 something.
- 47:53He took a couple of seconds off it.
- 47:55So yeah, shout out to him. He's part of the Puma Elite
- 47:58group in in America, trained by Alistair Craig, so yeah.
- 48:02And that was off the the YouTube.
- 48:04No, no, no, no. This guy doesn't have a YouTube.
- 48:07No, but the former record holder.
- 48:09Former record holder No. So Stephen Scullion had it
- 48:13before Dublin Martin last year, then this guy Hiko Tenosa, he
- 48:18trains at Dublin Track Club which is linked with Melbourne
- 48:21Track Club. He broke that record in Dublin
- 48:23last year. He ran 20940 something and then
- 48:26Peter Lynch literally 2 weeks to our last week in Dusseldorf,
- 48:31which I don't have never heard of the marathon there, but
- 48:33apparently it's pretty fast. But he ran yeah, two O 930
- 48:37something. So new marathon record for
- 48:39Ireland. We're slowly getting down there
- 48:42to the 2O2O lows, you know? It's mad there's so many
- 48:47marathons in Europe because when I'm when I'm putting like the
- 48:50results together and stuff each week for this, I go on a website
- 48:54called Watch Athletics and it lists kind of like all the major
- 48:57races and meets across the world that have happened in the past
- 49:01week. And there's just always like a
- 49:03different European city on there each week.
- 49:06Like Prague Marathon and Hanover marathon, Stockholm marathon,
- 49:10like all these cities that you don't associate with marathon.
- 49:14And I click into them just in case to see if there's like any
- 49:18noticeable names there and stuff.
- 49:19There's it's always one in sub 210 probably by like usually
- 49:23some Africans. But still, it just shows you
- 49:26that there are these races out there and you clearly can run
- 49:29fast at them. But like what's going into
- 49:31Europe, like there is so many races and like let's say even
- 49:34for that, any of the marathons, you're only get a couple of
- 49:37grand prize money. It's like it's worth their while
- 49:39nearly just coming in Europe, staying there for a bit,
- 49:42cleaning up, and then going back home to Africa to feed all the
- 49:44kids. Speaking of European marathons,
- 49:48our mates going to Copenhagen this week, isn't he, Mr.
- 49:50Barclough? Seen that?
- 49:52Is he actually? My God, he just ran like an
- 49:54ultra last week last night. Last night.
- 49:58He's too. Oh my God.
- 50:00Did you guys say that? Table.
- 50:02Have you seen what he's doing in training?
- 50:05And did you have you seen his latest video?
- 50:07I'm off Strava. I haven't went on in ages
- 50:09because it just makes me sad. But I've just seen, I've seen
- 50:12that I I've seen he put out a video, but I didn't actually
- 50:14watch it. It was all about training
- 50:17harder, not smarter. And he's gone to triple run
- 50:19days. So he's he's taken on a bit of
- 50:22like Cam Levens and other sort of an inspiration from other
- 50:26similar runners that do triple run days.
- 50:28And he his video came off the back of having just run a
- 50:33marathon the day before. And then he proceeded to run a
- 50:36280 K week and in that week included quality doing triple
- 50:41run days. And then that that was say a
- 50:43week ago. And then this week just gone, he
- 50:47did the Wings for life race, which have you seen the the
- 50:51concept of of that, which is basically there's a car that
- 50:55starts, I don't know if it's like an hour or so, it allows
- 50:58you to maybe you start running and then there's basically like
- 51:01a virtual line that the car goes at.
- 51:03And once the car catches you, your race finishes.
- 51:07And the idea is everyone gets caught but it and it starts at
- 51:12the same time in different places the world over.
- 51:15And, and basically the car quickens every at certain
- 51:19intervals. And I think there's like a
- 51:21theory and he finished third in the world.
- 51:25Is it, is it Joe for CUDA, like a 209 marathoner won it.
- 51:31And there was some European that was also still running that
- 51:36finished second. And I've just seen this footage
- 51:38of him, not through his content, but just it just appeared on my
- 51:42Instagram reel. He looks absolutely wrecked.
- 51:44Apparently his bows were giving him grief and he couldn't ingest
- 51:47food for like the last 20 or so case.
- 51:49And he looks absolutely spent. And I think he had to do
- 51:52multiple toilet stops and he couldn't ingest food.
- 51:55And he's just run himself absolutely ragged.
- 51:57Like he looked tired even for him who must live tired.
- 52:01So how he's going to freshen up for Sunday Like he's a machine.
- 52:07He's like he's built different. Will he run like under 225 do
- 52:11you think, or is that even a stretch?
- 52:13I think this is, it's not a time, it's not like a race, but
- 52:17yeah. OK, he's just doing it then.
- 52:20Is it? It's.
- 52:21Not, I think it's not like he's not just doing it.
- 52:25It's like he's gonna look to run fast.
- 52:27But he's he's talking about Gold Coast running like sub 210.
- 52:31But he's gonna try and know if he's gonna try and run a PB.
- 52:33But I think he wants to run fast in Copenhagen.
- 52:37So I see he was on my Strava timeline this morning.
- 52:40I seen he done, he done like A10 or 12K run or something this
- 52:44morning. I was like, hang on, I'm sure
- 52:46he's he was running an ultra or something yesterday.
- 52:50So clicked into his profile to see like when his ultra was and
- 52:54he started at 8:00 PM last night ran 330 sevens for over 4 hours.
- 53:00So he's running until after midnight and then he's. 68 OK
- 53:04this morning I was. Like what the hell?
- 53:10How does this guy do it? I don't want to talk about my
- 53:13training week now. How does he get away?
- 53:15Like I don't think anyone else will get away with it.
- 53:17I think he's just built different.
- 53:19Yeah, here and here, like legs end between knees.
- 53:25You know it's. Crazy.
- 53:26It's very inspiring. Well, it's almost to the point
- 53:28where it's not replicable. Gus said that I won't be up in
- 53:31Gold Coast for that weekend because like, then I feel like
- 53:34he could have something special up his sleeve if it all comes
- 53:37together and he's just able to like, almost mess around and do
- 53:40this stuff, yeah. It's a machine.
- 53:42So then the training week, the travel week, the absolutely
- 53:46nothing week, who wants to take us through what happened last
- 53:49week? Will.
- 53:50I go first. Start with when you flew.
- 53:53Well I'll start Monday and Monday I tried to run and it was
- 53:56too sore so stack that off. Tuesday was the D-Day leaving
- 54:01day so flight was at 10:20. Left Perth 11 1/2 hours later.
- 54:07I rocked up in Dubai, 2 hour layover there.
- 54:10Then I flew from Dubai to Dublin, which is like 9 1/2
- 54:13hours I think. And then yeah, I got to Dublin
- 54:14at around half one. Then it's just like a short
- 54:17little drive to my house. Surprised my family, which was
- 54:20really nice. It's good to see them all.
- 54:21My little brother is not so little anymore.
- 54:23Nyler, who's a big fan of the show.
- 54:27Yeah, now it's good to see everyone.
- 54:28I haven't ran. I'm just cycling, ellipticaling,
- 54:31keeping up with the physio. But yeah, I start work tomorrow,
- 54:35which is nice. Hopefully I'm not like it
- 54:37anymore. I I genuinely thought jet lag
- 54:40was a myth. Myth because, oh, coming over
- 54:42here, I didn't get anything. But I did stop in Thailand on
- 54:44the way over here over to Australia initially and but
- 54:48yeah, Oh my God, it's not fun at all.
- 54:50But yeah, I'm not doing no running, no races planned.
- 54:55So just trying to get my leg right cross running away.
- 54:57And yeah, that's me. Did you get much sleep on the on
- 55:00the travel bar? On the big flight from Perth to
- 55:05buy guys, there's these two kids and they weren't even that
- 55:08young, but Oh my God, they roared the plane down.
- 55:12They're Irish and Oh my God, I didn't get a wink idea.
- 55:16Plugs in, eye mask on, but you just say they're literally the
- 55:19row two rows behind us. They it was the worst.
- 55:23Like it's actually they should be like in a like it's like just
- 55:26thrown in a room or underneath the plane or something like that
- 55:29because no one could sleep, no one.
- 55:31And like for 11 1/2 hours. It's torture.
- 55:33And so I was in and out obviously with the kids
- 55:37screaming and then from Dubai to Dublin, I, you sort of got like
- 55:44I was sort of getting excited to go home and all.
- 55:45So I genuinely didn't sleep for like 28 hours.
- 55:49Yes, I won't be doing that anytime soon.
- 55:51What what are you doing when when the kids are kicking off on
- 55:54a flight? How are you managing that
- 55:56situation? You just, you just apologize for
- 55:59the first little bit and then you just stop apologizing and
- 56:01just wish that it was over, basically.
- 56:03Oh. Shit, I forgot.
- 56:05Yeah, you're a dad. Go use your dad's name.
- 56:11Yeah, it can relate. I'd say it's.
- 56:13Because you can't actually do nothing.
- 56:14Like no, I think the child, I think they were spoiled wrong.
- 56:17Like they're just kicking and screaming.
- 56:19Um, but yeah, like, yeah, the only thing I could think was.
- 56:23Carry it. You try and like, try and bring
- 56:25things onto the plane to try and make it.
- 56:27Yeah, the things you can try and do.
- 56:29But yeah, Ryan, what would you do?
- 56:30And you're. Certainly better travelling
- 56:31without. Them Ryan, what would you do if
- 56:33Gummy Bear was kicking off a fuss?
- 56:35The cat was meowing on a plane. Well, the irony is we've
- 56:39actually looked into how much it costs to get a cat on a flight,
- 56:43believe it or not. Like seeing as we're now, we've
- 56:46now taken full custody of this cat in case like it might have
- 56:50to come back to the UK one day. I think it's about £1500, but I
- 56:55think it would go downstairs like in the cargo in a crate or
- 56:59something that's. An expensive cat.
- 57:01Wow. But that's, well, that's what I
- 57:02said to Becky anyway about going downstairs and she's like, no,
- 57:06no, you can, like you can pay for it to be on the seat as
- 57:09well, like next to you. I heard, I think Dean, I think
- 57:12your family would love a little kitten to run around the place.
- 57:16Queens would love it our. House is pretty full, no?
- 57:21Yeah. Add to the chaos.
- 57:22Thinker. Yeah, that's wow.
- 57:24Yeah, pretty soon, aren't we? We needed and we needed a minder
- 57:29in the next couple of weeks. And Becky has multiple times
- 57:33said to me ask Dean if he'd like a cat in his house and tell him
- 57:37how fun it would be for the kids.
- 57:40But I've managed to divert her attention elsewhere.
- 57:43Dean. I appreciate that I I've been
- 57:45really keep my kids alive. So then hopefully cut it out for
- 57:49a cat. And Owen, going back to your
- 57:52travel, did you manage to get down the driveway unscathed
- 57:55because that's what you were worried about, wasn't it being
- 57:57no sis on the final approach to. Be honest.
- 58:00I rocked up to the house and there was no one there.
- 58:01Then we went back and then my mom and my sister were there and
- 58:04my dad. But it wasn't until I had to go.
- 58:08My brother had gone to training. My other brother was somewhere
- 58:13in Dublin and my sister, there's three of them that weren't in
- 58:15the house until like midnight. So I was just like chit waiting
- 58:18around all day waiting for them to come home.
- 58:20It wasn't exactly what I pictured, but I know they're all
- 58:24shocked and they're all happy around.
- 58:26So your grand kilometers, grand total kilometers for the week
- 58:30running is 0 big fat. 0. Yeah, well then we can't get, we
- 58:35can't get any less than that. So you tell us about your week.
- 58:38Yeah, not much, not much different.
- 58:40I am. The morning after the marathon I
- 58:42was still in Ballarat, so I did one last lap of Lake Windery
- 58:49with hails. So that was 6K's.
- 58:52I just remember it being incredibly uncomfortable.
- 58:56Gosh, I can't remember what the first K was.
- 58:58It wouldn't have been pretty. Remember, Hail's having to wait
- 59:01for me. Did you see my soy and.
- 59:06Then just remnants of it and then, yeah, it got got down to a
- 59:13speedy 5 1/2 minute K pace by the end.
- 59:16But yeah, did a bit of a shake out, didn't feel legs felt
- 59:20trashed, but nothing felt absolutely terrible, which was
- 59:23good. But then that was probably up
- 59:26until when that was the good time.
- 59:28Sort of came a bit to an end. We sort of got home and yeah, we
- 59:32sort of run into sick, some sick little kitties, so we were sort
- 59:36of looking after them and then sort of ended up getting unwell
- 59:41myself. So I didn't run again until
- 59:43later in the week. Went out for a jog, I think on
- 59:47like the Thursday, didn't feel too bad, end up feeling worse on
- 59:52Friday. So took Friday off.
- 59:53So yeah, I did 7 1/2 KS on the Thursday and then it was not
- 59:57until Sunday went out for another jog.
- 1:00:01No so went for a jog on Saturday and then went for a jog a
- 1:00:04smaller jog on the Sunday. Wanted it to be a bit longer but
- 1:00:08just felt pretty rubbish. So just did a short out and back
- 1:00:127K run. And so I think it was a grand
- 1:00:15total of maybe what, 20 KS or something for the week, which is
- 1:00:19my shortest week in quite a while.
- 1:00:23But look, it's the week after a marathon.
- 1:00:25I feel like if you can, if there was a time to miss a few days,
- 1:00:28it'd be then. So yeah, nothing.
- 1:00:30I don't feel like anything's necessarily broken.
- 1:00:33I just think my, my quads, I ran to and from work today and my
- 1:00:37quads still pretty feel, feel pretty wrecked.
- 1:00:41Hoping that they start to bounce back a bit soon.
- 1:00:44But yeah, I might try and get down to a session maybe on
- 1:00:46Thursday, but we'll just see how we go have.
- 1:00:49You had the rope or anything since.
- 1:00:52No, no, no, just no. Just getting rest.
- 1:00:56Some, you know, sleep when I can, but not sort of.
- 1:00:59Yeah. Just back to family and work,
- 1:01:02really. It's a stress.
- 1:01:03I don't know if you can relate to this, but my like kind of
- 1:01:06mental headspace last week was a bit weird because it's like, oh,
- 1:01:10you want to make the most of kind of it being that week
- 1:01:13immediately post marathon. Like you've been so strict on
- 1:01:17like not food or anything, but in terms of like your routine,
- 1:01:21you run in the morning, you run in the evening, you don't miss a
- 1:01:24session, you don't cut any run short by 5 or 10 minutes.
- 1:01:27Like everything is just so structured and so routine.
- 1:01:30Then you just do it, not necessarily because you want to
- 1:01:33be doing it, but because you just are doing it and you know
- 1:01:37that that's the case. But last week, obviously there's
- 1:01:40no like immediate goal or no set structure.
- 1:01:43So I was just kind of like trying to enjoy that and like
- 1:01:46just being a bit easy on myself to be like, Oh well, I'll just
- 1:01:50run in the evening and have a lie in and make the most of not
- 1:01:54often to like get out of bed and run straight away.
- 1:01:56But then then I would just makes you feel a little bit shit,
- 1:01:59doesn't it? And then by the end of the week,
- 1:02:01I mean, I won't go through my weeks because I'm talking about
- 1:02:04it here, but I didn't run Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and
- 1:02:06then around on Thursday. And once my body actually
- 1:02:11started to feel like a bit fresh and stuff, it made me realize
- 1:02:16how much you do actually love going out and going for a run
- 1:02:20because for so long you've been running because you have to.
- 1:02:23Well, it feels like you have to because you're training for
- 1:02:25something and you can't miss a run.
- 1:02:27You're running twice a day, blah, blah.
- 1:02:29But now once you kind of take all those pressures and stuff
- 1:02:32away and then you just run because you genuinely want to.
- 1:02:36It's so enjoyable. And when you when you're not
- 1:02:38like crazily fatigued either. But yeah, some like kind of go
- 1:02:42yo in between, like I can't be fucked going for a run, so I'm
- 1:02:45not going to go for a run. And then it's like, we'll feel
- 1:02:47good, want to do a session, but you've just got to take it for
- 1:02:51what it is and just kind of enjoy these these down periods,
- 1:02:54I guess. Yeah, I think so.
- 1:02:56I sort of like this time, like the marathon's like that peak of
- 1:02:59like, yeah, you know, you throw so much into it.
- 1:03:02I feel like you give yourself a few weeks to like, yeah, if you
- 1:03:05don't feel like doing something, don't do something, can
- 1:03:08reconnect with other parts of life that you know, are more
- 1:03:11important. And then you can running can be
- 1:03:14more serious again soon. But I know for myself, like, I
- 1:03:18like, I love my week where I'm getting a healthy amount of
- 1:03:22exercise in each day. Like I feel nice when I'm
- 1:03:24getting in a nice amount of running and that's my best week.
- 1:03:28So when I can get back to that, yeah, I can't wait because,
- 1:03:31yeah, part of me, like, you know, wants to just eat crap and
- 1:03:33not train, but you sort of don't want to do that for too long
- 1:03:37because that's not what I like doing.
- 1:03:39Wait, you know, day in, day out day, each day that has a
- 1:03:42sprinkling of exercise in it is what makes me happier.
- 1:03:46So yeah, I'll certainly be heading back to that sort of
- 1:03:49when I can for sure. So I had, I had a prime example
- 1:03:52of that on Friday. So on the Thursday, I've done my
- 1:03:55first run since around half an hour, thought OK, and then
- 1:03:58Friday I was going to run 45 minutes, you know, build it up
- 1:04:03and didn't run in the morning because couldn't be bothered.
- 1:04:07And then I was going to run in the evening and got home from
- 1:04:09work. I was like, oh shit.
- 1:04:10I'm like leaning towards wanting to like just put a film on and
- 1:04:14binge here. And I'm finding it really hard
- 1:04:16to say no to that and go for a run.
- 1:04:19So that's when I was like, fuck it, this is the time to like be
- 1:04:22OK, I don't want to go for a run.
- 1:04:24So I'm not going to go for a run.
- 1:04:26Went potentially slightly overboard, went down to IGA, got
- 1:04:3085 cookies from the bakery, like full-sized ones, 5 cookies.
- 1:04:35Then you know when you can't decide what it is that you want
- 1:04:37to choose, so you buy like 3 or 4 things.
- 1:04:40So got a white chocolate and Raspberry muffin.
- 1:04:42The whole of that went to and then a chocolate bar as well.
- 1:04:46And then I was sat there afterwards and sometimes after
- 1:04:50doing something like that, you can feel like absolutely
- 1:04:52horrific and hate yourself. But because I'd like actively
- 1:04:56made the choice to, I was just so happy.
- 1:04:58I was like, this is so good. And then I woke up on Saturday
- 1:05:03and was like actually motivated to like, OK, now it's the
- 1:05:06weekend. I'm going to like go for a run
- 1:05:08birthdays and enjoy it and stuff.
- 1:05:09So it was a nice balance. And actually, this story needs
- 1:05:14to tell you is on the run on Saturday, I met one of my
- 1:05:17friends who isn't necessarily a runner, but he can go for a run.
- 1:05:21And we went for a jog round herdsman.
- 1:05:24And I was telling him about Snake Alley, but that I'd never
- 1:05:27seen a snake down there. And literally the first little
- 1:05:30trail, but we went down. He like stops in the middle of
- 1:05:33the run. He said whoa brother, if you got
- 1:05:36the sense that was a Scottish accent, but he's Scottish.
- 1:05:40And I was like what the fuck are you doing?
- 1:05:41Like he literally just grabbed me and I thought he's taking the
- 1:05:44piss. He's like no, no and points at
- 1:05:46the trail and there's, I don't know if it was a tiger, but
- 1:05:50there are loads of tigers there aren't there?
- 1:05:51That's what it's like infamous for.
- 1:05:53And he's literally just parked up in the middle of the of the
- 1:05:56trail, sat there for like 5 seconds or so whilst we stared
- 1:06:01at it and then just slowly slivered off.
- 1:06:03And I was like fuck me, you literally couldn't write that.
- 1:06:05I'd just been telling him about Snake Alley.
- 1:06:07But how does no snakes down there It's.
- 1:06:09Like the fifth most venomous snake in the world?
- 1:06:11I think so. There you go.
- 1:06:13I'll be pulled me up otherwise snake could have been getting
- 1:06:16flicked back into the bushes. My week and then Sunday are just
- 1:06:21in 60 minutes before going to the DFO and shit, Adidas was was
- 1:06:28looking good on Sunday. I was sending you through some
- 1:06:31photos was an eye of what was in there.
- 1:06:34I end up coming away with a pair of the Boston twelves of Have
- 1:06:37you sworn them before? It's supposed to be like a
- 1:06:40decent training shoe only, well, kind of like an everyday up
- 1:06:44tempo long run shoe. Owen, you're the guy.
- 1:06:47Once I'm the guy, but yeah, they've got like these energy
- 1:06:50rods. So not cabin play, but energy
- 1:06:51rods. That's what I did as you in
- 1:06:53their shoes. But yeah, I'd use it for tempo
- 1:06:56threshold like all that, sort of longer, more snappier.
- 1:06:59The thing $120.00 paid for them, which is an absolute stale and
- 1:07:04unfortunately they didn't have any of my size in the end they
- 1:07:06had they had the office pro fours in there for $200, which
- 1:07:10is absolutely ludicrous. And then I was going to ask you
- 1:07:13about these. You know those the prime X ones,
- 1:07:16which are like the they're illegal technically based on the
- 1:07:20stack height, the too high. So I mean, sad because because
- 1:07:23I'm not a professional and I would never get, well, I don't
- 1:07:26think get banned for wearing them, but I wouldn't even buy
- 1:07:30them and wear them anyway because if I did run a PB in
- 1:07:34them, in the back of my mind I'd be like, yeah, but the shoes are
- 1:07:37illegal. So you're basically cheating
- 1:07:38anyway. Just like I would never wear
- 1:07:40super shoes on the track because at the top level you're not
- 1:07:43allowed to do it. And I wouldn't want that doubt.
- 1:07:45I mean, people might not think that way, but I do.
- 1:07:48Yeah, them ones, I think they've got 2 cabin plates in it, like
- 1:07:51stacked on top of each other or something like that.
- 1:07:54And the stack is way too high as well, like for let's say for a
- 1:07:57long run and all that sort of stuff.
- 1:07:59Like they're super, super comfy and they just offload all the
- 1:08:02pressure. So that's where I personally
- 1:08:04would try and throw them in the rotation.
- 1:08:06Yeah. And that's how they've ended up
- 1:08:07in the DFO because they've obviously produced them and then
- 1:08:11not maybe sold as many since they weren't illegal.
- 1:08:14No, they're releasing a new model.
- 1:08:15They're bringing out a new one. Yeah, SO might have 3 cabin
- 1:08:20plates. So what was your grand total for
- 1:08:22the week, Dean? 2020 KS.
- 1:08:25Funny. Well, I was 30 so that gives us
- 1:08:2850K between the three of us. That's.
- 1:08:30What Jake does in a day. Dean, do you want to talk to us
- 1:08:33about YouTube Diaries? Sure.
- 1:08:36We're at, we're at. Do you want to keep on going or
- 1:08:39leave it till next? I'll cut it down.
- 1:08:46This is what happens when you're not here, Owen.
- 1:08:48This is what this is what we've become.
- 1:08:50This is the new normal. I can't just great, go for it.
- 1:08:59I'm just conscious. You, you have to go to bed.
- 1:09:01Yeah. We, we gotta find a way to, you
- 1:09:04know, we gotta tighten some things up, don't we?
- 1:09:06Trim some hair. Yeah, I need to stop chatting
- 1:09:08shit, that's why. We just live such entertaining
- 1:09:11lives. We, we just got so much to say,
- 1:09:14all right? Like I didn't didn't have to
- 1:09:15stop to happen to me. Yeah, he's barely scratched the
- 1:09:19surface. All right.
- 1:09:23So yeah, YouTube Diaries. I thought given, you know, sort
- 1:09:27of starting from the bottom again and sort of building back
- 1:09:30fitness, we could and I like to do a 2 parter sort of old
- 1:09:34YouTube, new YouTube. I do one on a couple of rabbit
- 1:09:40holes I sometimes go down, which is around like YouTube channels
- 1:09:43or you that offer some like educational content.
- 1:09:48So there's one like playlist you can find if you YouTube Jack
- 1:09:53Daniels. Jack Daniels is like a like a
- 1:09:57running or father in terms of training, philosophy and and
- 1:10:02sort of education is like very knowledgeable, sort of shares
- 1:10:05the name with, you know, the spirit.
- 1:10:08So it's hard to forget. But yeah, if you put in
- 1:10:10something like Jack Daniels easy running or Jack Daniels
- 1:10:13Threshold or Jack Daniels double runs or Jack Daniels VO2HE sort
- 1:10:18of there's a whole series of like short videos that are no
- 1:10:23more than 5 minutes long. So much shorter than the easy
- 1:10:25double episodes that you can get a nice bite sized piece of what
- 1:10:30is like where it's sort of explained, distilled really well
- 1:10:34and really factual explanation of what the training zone is or
- 1:10:37what the idea is. And he sort of explains it
- 1:10:41really well and really clearly. So I love them.
- 1:10:44It's just as I share them with people if people ask me
- 1:10:46questions about to try and explain why do you train in this
- 1:10:50zone or train at this effort. So Jack Daniels huge Yeah on
- 1:10:53YouTube and then. You see the guy with the
- 1:10:56calculator as well, that that comes from him, Yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:01And these, the snippets on YouTube are just from a series
- 1:11:03of lectures he's given. And I've just put it into like
- 1:11:06little bites that you can sort of just digest at your own time.
- 1:11:09And they've, they've been on, they've been on YouTube for
- 1:11:11years. But then more recent is Steve
- 1:11:13Magnus. So I think he's like written a
- 1:11:17lot of books. And so he's like a like a
- 1:11:20running author and sort of, I think very popular on Twitter or
- 1:11:25X and releases very regular YouTube content sort of sharing
- 1:11:30his ideas around training philosophy, training zones and
- 1:11:34the like. And I, I think he creates a 15
- 1:11:37to 20 minute educational videos that I find interesting to
- 1:11:41listen to, like goes into a bit more detail than those Jack
- 1:11:45Daniels clips, but I always find his take on things like easy to
- 1:11:48digest and educational. So just another one where if
- 1:11:52you're looking to learn a bit more about different parts of
- 1:11:54running between those two channels, that team tend to have
- 1:11:58a lot of good content. Can't remember if Steve if this
- 1:12:01conversation was had on here or in person, but Steve Magnus was
- 1:12:05originally part of Alberto Salazar set up and he was the
- 1:12:10whistleblower who can attend them in.
- 1:12:12So he's yeah. Do we have that?
- 1:12:14He's quite yeah, potentially. But yeah, he's very science and
- 1:12:19evidence based, isn't he? He always puts out tweets like
- 1:12:23or if you're on Instagram, he puts up a post today and they're
- 1:12:26actually really, really good. They just make you think he like
- 1:12:28comes to. Things.
- 1:12:29Yeah, thought provoking. Yeah, it's really good.
- 1:12:31There are two things, not YouTube Diaries, but Instagram
- 1:12:36reels because I want to put them on the story on the easy double,
- 1:12:39but I'm going to have to give some context on them.
- 1:12:41So I'm not sure any of my like non runnings group of friends
- 1:12:46listen to this. I can't imagine that they do.
- 1:12:48Maybe they listen to the first one out of intrigue, but then
- 1:12:51quickly gave up. But Bay two of them in the past
- 1:12:55couple of weeks have definitely humbled me in sending me these
- 1:12:59two rails. So one of them's like this guy
- 1:13:01in the pub after a marathon and he's just ran like I think it's
- 1:13:04246 and he's obviously going on about it.
- 1:13:07He's got his medal on and stuff and his mates going to me.
- 1:13:11Nobody cares that you run a marathon and he's going, yeah,
- 1:13:15but it was 3 minutes quicker than last year.
- 1:13:17Last year was 249. And he said Oh my God, nobody
- 1:13:22cares, well done. 3 minutes quicker.
- 1:13:25And I've just opened that from a mate who doesn't run and I think
- 1:13:29he's just trying to tell me something basically like shut up
- 1:13:31talking about running. And then there was there was
- 1:13:37another one which was quite funny.
- 1:13:39Another of my let's say an inverted commas friends sent me
- 1:13:43this because they're clearly just trying to take the piss out
- 1:13:44on me. And it's this guy like turns up
- 1:13:47to his mates house. And the caption is something
- 1:13:49like runners now speaking to someone 10 years ago.
- 1:13:54And this guy knocks on the door. And to the fellow who answers,
- 1:13:58he's like, hey, mate, I just ran 10K.
- 1:14:01And the guy in the doorway is like, OK.
- 1:14:03And the other fellows, like, my average pace was 415 per
- 1:14:06kilometer. And the guy's like, wow, OK, my
- 1:14:10cadence was this, my heart rate was this.
- 1:14:12And the guy's just like, why are you telling me all this stuff?
- 1:14:15Literally nobody's asking you. He's like, I felt really good.
- 1:14:18I'll probably do it again tomorrow, but maybe I'll go a
- 1:14:20little bit easier because then on Saturday, I want to do this,
- 1:14:24listening to it. Like, shit, these are just
- 1:14:26absolutely rinsing me by sending me these, aren't they?
- 1:14:28So yeah, I'm not sure if they are listening.
- 1:14:30And Shadows somewhere, but cheers for taking the piss Army
- 1:14:33lads. So to bring the show home, I
- 1:14:37think we have a couple of listener questions come through
- 1:14:39this week. Not many because I only put it
- 1:14:42out earlier. But Connor Dillon asks.
- 1:14:45Need to know that boys thought this has been going around, to
- 1:14:48be fair on 100 men versus 1 guerrilla at the base.
- 1:14:51I don't know if you have seen that on social media this week,
- 1:14:54but it's kind of been a little bit viral.
- 1:14:56Who would win in a fight? We, I don't think we stand a
- 1:14:58chance. Let's be real.
- 1:15:00We don't. We don't have anything.
- 1:15:01We have no weapons, just our fists.
- 1:15:03Is it? Yeah, yeah, just pure fight.
- 1:15:05Ah, no, no chance. You don't reckon if you just
- 1:15:07like everyone, attacked it once and you just poked his eyes out?
- 1:15:12No, because like I feeling the gorilla would like RIP the 1st 5
- 1:15:17people and then people would get scared and then you have that
- 1:15:20like Sansado in your head and like yeah I don't think we'd
- 1:15:23win. You know some people like proper
- 1:15:25and joy going deep into the thought about these don't they?
- 1:15:28Seeing on on Twitter, this guy was like you would need to split
- 1:15:31the group of humans into groups of 10 and each the 1st 50 would
- 1:15:37storm and outer protective layer and then in a protective layer.
- 1:15:41And these are the time with attack from these angles and
- 1:15:44that. But I just don't have the
- 1:15:46capacity to entertain it. And I just like a bit like you
- 1:15:49and be like now the gorilla would win, but the men men will
- 1:15:52probably start fighting amongst each other before they learn to
- 1:15:55fight with the gorilla anyway. I've seen this AI generated
- 1:15:58thing where it's like 100,000 men against like 10,000 gorillas
- 1:16:02and I could win and the gorillas won as well so.
- 1:16:06Predictive modelling. So yeah.
- 1:16:10Guerrillas will win. There's a I'd win Asia, those
- 1:16:12were telling me I'd run like 224 though as well.
- 1:16:19Yeah, share that video as well. Yeah, Nicholas, the Norwegian
- 1:16:24guy who runs in Perth with front runner I think, or he kind of
- 1:16:28flats in between a few training groups.
- 1:16:32We must have missed this one previously, she says.
- 1:16:34I'll try again. Dean is the Mizuno super half
- 1:16:37tight still as super as the first time use Ah.
- 1:16:40Well not in terms of pay days, but I still write them.
- 1:16:44I think they're great so would recommend them.
- 1:16:47Whether or not they're 2.4% more efficient than a regular half
- 1:16:50tight, I'm not sure. That just could be good
- 1:16:52marketing. But I do love the tights.
- 1:16:54Thanks Dean. And then lastly my mum sends a
- 1:16:57question saying I was going to bring this up but I didn't want
- 1:17:00to take us off topic too much but seeing as we didn't have
- 1:17:05much running training talk to talk about, I was going to say
- 1:17:08so how do we feel guys about Liverpool being crowned Premier
- 1:17:12League champions for a 20th time?
- 1:17:16Sick of sick of it. And now that I'm over here it's
- 1:17:18actually relevant again. Which is not fun.
- 1:17:21I'd say Josh Ty is up in arms with Burnley.
- 1:17:24Huh. Burnley went up.
- 1:17:25Did they, did they secure the automatics?
- 1:17:27Did they? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:28So no, I'm sick of Liverpool. Shout out the Burnley massive,
- 1:17:32but yeah, well, did you see as well?
- 1:17:34Trent's confirmed he's leaving. We won't talk about football too
- 1:17:37much, but on the subject of Liverpool.
- 1:17:39Did not see that, but yeah, he's gone for the money, isn't he?
- 1:17:43Sabia Galactico, yeah. Wouldn't mind, Barcelona are
- 1:17:47better than them than Real Madrid.
- 1:17:48Yeah, some reason they just have that sway though, don't they?
- 1:17:52Yeah, then again, Liverpool have lost a few players to Barcelona
- 1:17:55in the time anyway. Can't compete with those Spanish
- 1:17:58boys. Yeah, but like, to be fair to
- 1:18:00him, like he grew up in Liverpool, he won't use
- 1:18:03everything or won everything with use.
- 1:18:06So it's only fair he can go off and like, have a nice time in
- 1:18:08Spain in the sun. Oh, is it?
- 1:18:10Yeah. Fair for him, I think the, the,
- 1:18:14the controversy is that he's leaving on a three and like he's
- 1:18:17ran down his contract and he's worth like £100 million and all
- 1:18:20this. But any who talking about being
- 1:18:24champions here, I mean I brought that so anyway.
- 1:18:28OK, it's the first time in the land.
- 1:18:30Are we going to have have some contribution there, Dean, sorry.
- 1:18:33No, my my interest in the EPL goes up and down with my
- 1:18:37interest in my EPL fantasy team. But I haven't put one in this
- 1:18:40year. So I've sort of I'm a bit bit
- 1:18:42removed but I do follow the the chat loosely.
- 1:18:45Do you do the predictions on the AFL?
- 1:18:48The tipping. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:50And fantasy, fantasy AFL, the in fantasy AFL, you get these
- 1:18:56coveted hats. It gives you a rank if you
- 1:18:58finish inside the top 100. Let's say there's, I don't know,
- 1:19:01fifty 100,000 teams entered the top 100, all get a hat.
- 1:19:05And I think in the last three years I've finished around in
- 1:19:08the top 400, but not quite in the top 100.
- 1:19:11So I'm desperately trying to win a bloody hat so I can stop
- 1:19:14playing this game and stop wasting my weekends following
- 1:19:18teams that I don't even support just to see what these random
- 1:19:20players do. So anyway, it's one of my vices.
- 1:19:24The Eagles to win this year. No, no better than to tip the
- 1:19:27Eagles. The Eagles are shit ass so.
- 1:19:30That's the way you win. Just pick everyone who's against
- 1:19:33the Eagles to win. Pretty much.
- 1:19:34Pretty much. All right, so I think that is
- 1:19:36those done boys. Thanks very much for your time.
- 1:19:39Thanks listeners for putting us in your ears for another hour
- 1:19:42and a half and we will be back next week for not, hopefully not
- 1:19:46more of the same. Hopefully some actual training
- 1:19:48next week. Won't be on my.
- 1:19:50Cheers guys. Good luck guys.
- 1:19:52See you mate.
