- 0:18Speaker 1: What's up, everybody?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Welcome back to JFK Book Reviews, a division of the
- 0:24Speaker 2: Lone Guman Podcast.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I am Big, Bad Bob.
- 0:31Speaker 2: My shirt matches my grip tape on the skateboards. Evening
- 0:35Speaker 2: feeling good, and tonight we're gonna be reviewing the book
- 0:40Speaker 2: The Search for Lee Harvey Oswald by Robert Grodin. I'm
- 0:47Speaker 2: about to back this bad boy up because it's big.
- 0:51Speaker 2: She ain't very thick, but she big twenty by twenty
- 0:57Speaker 2: by twenty inches. It's a big old square. Now there's
- 1:03Speaker 2: a reason it doesn't feel very thick. There's two hundred
- 1:06Speaker 2: and seventy two pages here, but it is printed on.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Glossy paper.
- 1:16Speaker 2: And it was published in nineteen ninety five by.
- 1:19Speaker 1: The Penguin Books.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Of course, this is authored by Robert Groden, in case
- 1:25Speaker 2: I forgot to mention that, with an introduction by Cyril
- 1:28Speaker 2: weckt MD, A comprehensive photographic record. And what I like
- 1:40Speaker 2: about Robert Groden's books is the fact that they are designed.
- 1:45Speaker 1: To be very large, coffee table like books. You know,
- 1:50Speaker 1: there's not and it's not just pictures.
- 1:55Speaker 2: There's twenty chapters in here dealing with all aspects of
- 2:00Speaker 2: Oswald's life, starting from his childhood to his death, and
- 2:05Speaker 2: there's a photographic record of all of it in here.
- 2:09Speaker 2: So and this is literally the most comprehensive photographic record
- 2:16Speaker 2: I've ever seen of Lee Harvey Oswald's life. So again,
- 2:22Speaker 2: it starts off with his childhood and there's a little
- 2:30Speaker 2: baby picture of Lee Harvey appall. And you know it's
- 2:36Speaker 2: not just pictures. He gives you a lot of background
- 2:39Speaker 2: to go with it. Again, twenty chapters through some of
- 2:43Speaker 2: the biggest aspects of Oswald's life. Now, what I like
- 2:50Speaker 2: about this book, aside from it being a big coffee
- 2:54Speaker 2: table book chock full of glossy photographs black and white color,
- 3:01Speaker 2: there's a lot of photographs in here that you're not
- 3:03Speaker 2: going to see anywhere else. This was published in nineteen
- 3:07Speaker 2: ninety five, kind of pre Internet, and just from talking
- 3:12Speaker 2: to folks like Ken Zedeker and Alex Harris, who's actually
- 3:16Speaker 2: had the opportunity to visit excuse me, Robert gruten Poem
- 3:21Speaker 2: and his vast array of storage units. This guy has
- 3:29Speaker 2: been around since the early seventies and interested in the
- 3:36Speaker 2: case before that, so probably late sixties. He was able
- 3:42Speaker 2: to get onto the photographic panel of the HSCA.
- 3:46Speaker 1: And do a lot of work there.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Obtained a lot of photographs from them, likely copies of
- 3:53Speaker 2: the Zapruiter film.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Things like that.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I believe he got copies of a lot of different
- 4:04Speaker 2: movies over the years. And he's he's a collector, Okay,
- 4:10Speaker 2: he's a collector of a lot of very good, very
- 4:16Speaker 2: clear photographs. And a lot of the photographs that he
- 4:20Speaker 2: that he you know, has, you know, including the Cruiter film.
- 4:23Speaker 2: He helped colorize that, stabilize it, make it a better
- 4:27Speaker 2: looking image. And he's a skilled photographic expert. And you
- 4:36Speaker 2: know this book, the other one he did, The Killing
- 4:43Speaker 2: of a President, and Absolute Proof are all big, glossy,
- 4:50Speaker 2: coffee table like books. And this is reflected in the price.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Believe me when I tell you I looked this thing
- 4:58Speaker 2: up on Amazon linking the description and I said, God damn,
- 5:05Speaker 2: one hundred and eighty two dollars for a brand new
- 5:09Speaker 2: hardcover copy of this book. Now I'm about to make
- 5:15Speaker 2: some of y'all really sick. So on one of my
- 5:20Speaker 2: earlier ramblings, I went on a trip to a bookstore
- 5:23Speaker 2: in Frederick that I used to frequent a lot, and
- 5:26Speaker 2: that was probably the first time that i'd been here
- 5:28Speaker 2: in eight years, but I was able to get this
- 5:32Speaker 2: book from that bookstore for seven dollars and ninety five cents.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Seven dollars and ninety five cents. That's crazy. Now this
- 5:46Speaker 2: thing is on Amazon for one hundred and eighty two.
- 5:49Speaker 2: But don't fret, people, you don't have to buy a
- 5:51Speaker 2: brand new copy.
- 5:53Speaker 1: There are other copies on here.
- 5:58Speaker 2: For as low as twenty dollars for a good copy used.
- 6:10Speaker 2: There's one for sixteen, a couple for twenty, a couple
- 6:13Speaker 2: for sixteen, twenty four, twenty six, a used very good
- 6:18Speaker 2: copy for twenty eight twenty nine thirty one dollars for
- 6:25Speaker 2: a very good copy. So there's lots of used copies
- 6:28Speaker 2: on here for a reasonable price. And you know, if
- 6:33Speaker 2: you are a serious researcher into this case and you
- 6:36Speaker 2: don't have any books by Robert Grodin, what are you doing.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Again?
- 6:43Speaker 2: This guy's had access to a lot of photographs that
- 6:50Speaker 2: people have never seen before, and this book is no different.
- 6:57Speaker 2: This book is no different. And I was just flipping through,
- 7:02Speaker 2: perusing because it's been a while since I cracked this bitch.
- 7:07Speaker 2: But you know, I'm looking through here and I see
- 7:09Speaker 2: all kinds of photos that I hadn't seen before. There's
- 7:14Speaker 2: photos of there's a photo of Bule Frasier in here
- 7:16Speaker 2: I've never seen before. There's crime scene photos I've never
- 7:19Speaker 2: seen before. There's suspect photos I've never seen before. There's
- 7:24Speaker 2: a photo of Selso Hernandez, who was in the street
- 7:27Speaker 2: fracas with Carlos Brinia and Oswald in there. There's a
- 7:31Speaker 2: picture of Lawrence Howard in there I've never seen before.
- 7:35Speaker 2: You know, I could sit here and go on and
- 7:36Speaker 2: on and on.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Now.
- 7:41Speaker 2: The reason I wanted to do this book tonight is
- 7:43Speaker 2: because there's some images in here that pertained what we
- 7:47Speaker 2: were talking about this past Friday night, when it comes
- 7:50Speaker 2: to Jack Ruby and the basement and the shooting of
- 7:55Speaker 2: Ozwald and things like that. And we'll be talking more
- 7:59Speaker 2: about that Wednesday night on members only for part two,
- 8:04Speaker 2: and I'll be showing you some things from.
- 8:06Speaker 1: The book about that as well.
- 8:09Speaker 2: There's there's a photo in there allegedly of Jack Ruby
- 8:12Speaker 2: immediately after the shots and Dally Plaza up on the grassy. No.
- 8:16Speaker 2: I mean, ah, there's all kinds of stuff in this book.
- 8:25Speaker 1: I'm trying to think of.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Really anything bad to say about this book, but you know,
- 8:32Speaker 2: Robert Gruden has been one of them guys. It's you know,
- 8:35Speaker 2: he's always in Daly Plaza. He's always available, he's you know,
- 8:40Speaker 2: he doesn't mind talking to the folks. Yes, he sells
- 8:43Speaker 2: his wares there. But you know, trust me when I
- 8:47Speaker 2: tell you these books are worth the price. For sure.
- 8:55Speaker 2: They're they're big, they're beautiful, they're bold. Uh just for
- 9:00Speaker 2: the pictures alone, worth the price of admission. You also
- 9:05Speaker 2: get a lot of commentary about these photographs. There's there's
- 9:12Speaker 2: one in there of Marina and and Ruth Payne that
- 9:14Speaker 2: I'd never seen before. Uh, you know, different angles of
- 9:18Speaker 2: the rooming house and and things like this, and Earle
- 9:23Speaker 2: and Roberts view of the bus stop. It's at the
- 9:25Speaker 2: corner of Zangs from from her living room window.
- 9:30Speaker 1: I mean, there's there's just a ton a ton a
- 9:33Speaker 1: ton a ton of stuff in here.
- 9:35Speaker 2: And I just can't tell you how invaluable this is.
- 9:43Speaker 2: And this book mainly just focuses on Lee Harvey Oswall's life.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Now his first book, The Killing of a President. You know,
- 9:51Speaker 2: of course it's gonna take us, you know, from.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Love Field.
- 9:56Speaker 2: All the way through to Parkland and uh, things like that.
- 10:01Speaker 2: You know he's gonna take us through Dale Plasti, he's
- 10:03Speaker 2: gonna take us through all the films and photos from
- 10:05Speaker 2: the assassination itself, And of course he touches on Oswald
- 10:09Speaker 2: and that as well. But this book goes super, super
- 10:14Speaker 2: in depth. And there was a page in here, and
- 10:22Speaker 2: this is before Harvey and Lee came out, where there
- 10:30Speaker 2: is just a epic.
- 10:35Speaker 1: F ton.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Of Lee Harvey Oswald photos throughout his life.
- 10:45Speaker 1: I think it's one of this page.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, look at this.
- 10:49Speaker 1: This is the kind of stuff you're gonna.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Find in this book, the evolution of Lee Harvey Oswald.
- 10:58Speaker 2: I mean, did you did you know that there was
- 11:00Speaker 2: this many photos of Oswald?
- 11:03Speaker 1: I mean, look at this. That's crazy.
- 11:07Speaker 2: And of course he starts talking about too many Oswalds.
- 11:11Speaker 1: He does go.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Into speculating about things like that. Now, again, I think
- 11:22Speaker 2: we should listen to what Robert Grodin has to say
- 11:24Speaker 2: about things. Having been around the case for so long,
- 11:29Speaker 2: he's instrumental and getting the Zapruder film on national television
- 11:36Speaker 2: and being the catalyst for the House Select Committee on Assassinations.
- 11:41Speaker 2: If he hadn't shown that film, we likely would have
- 11:44Speaker 2: never gotten the HSCA, So he deserved to be on
- 11:48Speaker 2: the photographic panel there. And you know his work restoring
- 11:53Speaker 2: and stabilizing and colorizing the Zapruder film. You know, it's
- 11:58Speaker 2: just amazing stuff. So with that being said, and for
- 12:07Speaker 2: what it is, I would say that I, like I said,
- 12:15Speaker 2: if you're a serious researcher, you need this book in
- 12:17Speaker 2: your collection. And I'm happy I got one for very
- 12:21Speaker 2: cheap many moons ago. But even still, I wouldn't pay
- 12:28Speaker 2: one hundred and eighty two dollars for one, but I
- 12:32Speaker 2: could part with twenty or thirty bucks for a very
- 12:34Speaker 2: good used copy, which is basically what I have here,
- 12:38Speaker 2: a very good used copy. There's some stains on there.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I don't know what that is, but all in all,
- 12:49Speaker 2: it's pretty good. You know, the spine's in good shape,
- 12:53Speaker 2: the cover's in good shape. There's no rips or tears.
- 13:01Speaker 2: There's pictures that appear to show Clay Shaw on the
- 13:03Speaker 2: street behind Lee Oswald as he's handing out pamphlets in
- 13:08Speaker 2: New Orleans in front of the trademark.
- 13:11Speaker 1: It goes into Clinton and Jackson, and.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Like I said, New Orleans to Dallas, all aspects of
- 13:18Speaker 2: Oswald's life are in this book in photographic form, and.
- 13:26Speaker 1: I love having it.
- 13:29Speaker 2: You know, it always trips me out to see new
- 13:31Speaker 2: pictures and things that I've never seen before, because I
- 13:33Speaker 2: feel like I've seen everything. But if you go look
- 13:36Speaker 2: at Robert Gordon book, there's definitely gonna be stuff in.
- 13:38Speaker 1: There that you've never seen before.
- 13:41Speaker 2: So with that being said, for what it is, and
- 13:45Speaker 2: the balls that this guy had to stand up to
- 13:48Speaker 2: the city for all these years and do what he
- 13:51Speaker 2: does and do it on his own, you know. I mean,
- 13:57Speaker 2: this guy's like selling shit out of his trunk, you know,
- 14:00Speaker 2: which is like very old school approach, you know, because
- 14:04Speaker 2: they're not going to put his book in Barnes and
- 14:06Speaker 2: Noble or whatever. Did you know, a big distribution deal?
- 14:11Speaker 2: These books are too big, too expensive, too beautiful too
- 14:14Speaker 2: they cost a lot to print, so the price is
- 14:17Speaker 2: justified and he deserves what he gets when he sells
- 14:22Speaker 2: his wares. I think Absolute Proof is on Amazon for
- 14:26Speaker 2: one hundred bucks, and you know that's a new copy.
- 14:31Speaker 2: I don't think there's any used copies up there for cheaper,
- 14:34Speaker 2: much cheaper than that. But I'm gonna give this book
- 14:39Speaker 2: a solid nine out of ten guns up. I thoroughly
- 14:47Speaker 2: enjoyed it. I love owning it. I like looking at it,
- 14:52Speaker 2: and like I said, we're going to be looking at
- 14:54Speaker 2: some stuff from it here on Wednesday night for the
- 14:57Speaker 2: members only show, because there's some interesting things in here. Now,
- 15:01Speaker 2: does he get everything right in this book?
- 15:04Speaker 1: No?
- 15:04Speaker 2: I mean the book is over thirty years old. Okay,
- 15:09Speaker 2: there's there's a lot of old school conspiracy speculations in
- 15:15Speaker 2: here that have been somewhat debunked over the years. But
- 15:21Speaker 2: again this is pre ARRB, this is pre the New Files.
- 15:27Speaker 2: But you can't beat the quality of the book, the
- 15:30Speaker 2: quality of the photographs in the book. They are very clear,
- 15:35Speaker 2: they are very big, That's what she said. And I
- 15:42Speaker 2: really enjoy this book. Like if you leave this out
- 15:44Speaker 2: on your coffee table, people will pick it up and
- 15:46Speaker 2: look at it for sure, you know, as opposed to
- 15:52Speaker 2: a little, tiny paperback book with no pictures in it.
- 15:56Speaker 2: This is the perfect combination of a visual representation of
- 16:03Speaker 2: who Lee Harvey Oswald was, what Lee Harvey Oswald was
- 16:07Speaker 2: doing through every step of his life to his death,
- 16:13Speaker 2: and nobody's ever done it like this before or since.
- 16:18Speaker 2: So I am more than happy giving it a nine
- 16:23Speaker 2: out of ten guns up. I highly recommend if you're
- 16:27Speaker 2: a serious researcher, to grab yourself a copy, get that
- 16:30Speaker 2: shit on your coffee table, and maybe it'll spark up
- 16:34Speaker 2: a conversation when friends come over and like, oh.
- 16:37Speaker 1: What's this? Oh you don't want to look at that?
- 16:40Speaker 1: Oh yeah, dude, let me see. Oh oh oh wait
- 16:43Speaker 1: a minute, Wow, this is really cool. I didn't know this.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Oh you know, it's one of those type books. So
- 16:52Speaker 2: I thoroughly enjoy it. I highly recommend it. So go
- 16:57Speaker 2: get you some, Go get you some. Anyway that's gonna
- 17:02Speaker 2: do it. For JFK Book Reviews a division of the
