- 0:27in US. And in these teaching episodes,
- 0:30we will be personalizing scripture and I'll be walking us

- 0:37relationship with Jesus and letting the Holy Spirit lead us
- 0:42with enthusiasm for everything God has planned for us.
- 0:46So if you want to follow along, you can jump to my website, get
- 0:50your copy of the Serenity Journal.
- 0:52But it's absolutely not required to engage in the solo teaching
- 0:56episodes. OK, I hope you'll meet me there.
- 0:59Today. I have with me Abby MacDonald
- 1:03sharing about her book called Surrendering Certainty, Hearing
- 1:07God today by Letting Go of tomorrow.
- 1:11Abby is a writing coach, speaker and writes regularly for
- 1:16Proverbs 31 Ministries Daily Devotions team.
- 1:21Her mission is to empower women to hear God's voice in their
- 1:25lives and act on it in faith. This episode is so good.
- 1:30We talk about how to say yes to God and the uncertainties in
- 1:34life and how to hear God's voice prompting us to move forward in
- 1:38faith. Abby shares about how to move
- 1:41past doubt and how to know the difference between closed doors
- 1:46and distractions. This was so packed full of
- 1:50wisdom and encouragement to us all to get comfortable with the
- 1:55uncertainties of life so God can actually use us in our faith
- 2:00journey and also to surrender those false securities and to
- 2:05walk into the true security that God has for us every single day.
- 2:11OK, so if you're ready, I'm ready.
- 2:14Here's my guest, Abby McDonald. Hi, Abby, welcome to She Speaks
- 2:19Life. I am thrilled you are here with
- 2:21us today. Thank you, Jamie.
- 2:22I'm glad to be here. I was looking forward to this
- 2:25interview all week. I'm so excited about your
- 2:28message. You have written a book recently
- 2:32called Surrendering Certainty, Hearing God Today By Letting Go
- 2:37of Tomorrow, and boy, it's just Me.
- 2:41And. I was so excited to dive into
- 2:44further of this message of just saying yes to God in the
- 2:48unknown. I think that is so hard for us
- 2:51to step into things that are uncertain in life and we hold on
- 2:56to these false securities and you just share about how to
- 3:01recognize God's voice, His promptings, and really
- 3:06surrendering certainty for us to live fully toward what God has
- 3:13planned for us to live fully in faith.
- 3:16And so I just can't wait to dive into this.
- 3:18So before we do that, I would love for you to share what is
- 3:24your favorite Scripture verse and why I think we can find so
- 3:27much about our guests just by asking that one question.
- 3:31Absolutely, Jamie. Well, my favorite scripture
- 3:36changes based on the season of life I'm in right now.
- 3:41My favorite scripture is actually one that is.
- 3:45It's one of the foundations of my book, and it's John 1027.
- 3:50My sheep hear my voice. I know them and they follow me.
- 3:54And that verse is a reminder to me that each of us who called
- 4:00Jesus Lord do have the ability to hear him.
- 4:04And I think that sometimes we question that.
- 4:07We question whether or not a word we received is from the
- 4:11Lord or whether or not we can actually hear him.
- 4:14And so that Scripture is just such a good reminder to me of
- 4:19that truth, that each of us has that.
- 4:22And when we have the Holy Spirit, He speaks to us.
- 4:25Yeah, I know. And it's it's so crucial in our
- 4:28walk with him and to know the direction and his guidance.
- 4:32And I remember there was a time of my life that I was so
- 4:37desperately trying to hear him. And it was somebody told me,
- 4:41it's like training your heart ears to hear him.
- 4:45And the more you get to know him intimately, the more you're
- 4:49familiar with that voice and the more you can recognize, oh, you
- 4:53know, that's it. And so goes along with that
- 4:56Scripture verse that you're saying, because sheep know
- 4:59they're shepherd's voice and how sweet it is for that example
- 5:03that God put in the Bible for us to glean on.
- 5:07OK, so let's start off with you sharing a bit of your back
- 5:11story. Why this message on surrendering
- 5:14certainty? Yes.
- 5:15So this message was born out of my own struggle, Jamie, as I
- 5:20think that our messages typically are.
- 5:23But it was also conversations that I had with friends and
- 5:30coaching clients and just different people over the years.
- 5:33And it was a question that I kept hearing time and time
- 5:36again. Is this question of is this
- 5:39God's voice? Is this God's will?
- 5:42Or is it just my desire? How do I know?
- 5:46And I kept seeing this hesitation to move forward
- 5:52without that certainty. And sometimes we ask God for
- 5:57another sign and because he's faithful and he's merciful, he
- 6:02will give us a sign. But then we can question that
- 6:07sign that he gives us. I mean, we see that in the story
- 6:09of Gideon. And so it there comes a point
- 6:13where we just have to say, yes, you know, we have to step out in
- 6:16faith. And so that was what drove the
- 6:19message. And I really wanted to just
- 6:23identify what it was that causes this inertia and this doubt.
- 6:29And to me that that's what it is, that's what the Lord
- 6:32revealed to me is that it's this desire for certainty.
- 6:36We just, we want to know what's going to happen.
- 6:40Is this going to work out the way I want it to or the way I
- 6:45think it should? And most of the time we don't
- 6:48get to know that. Sometimes God will reveal things
- 6:51to us, but that has to be on his timeline, not on ours.
- 6:57And so yeah, that that's what the book explores and what the
- 7:01inspiration behind it was. Yeah, it's such a reverse.
- 7:06Just what what our mindset, what we want to do.
- 7:09It's such the polar opposite that, you know, God really wants
- 7:15us to take action, step into faith.
- 7:18Then he can. Work with something, right?
- 7:21He can work with us when we are showing that, hey, I'm believing
- 7:26in you even when I don't see it in the natural.
- 7:29I'm stepping in, I'm doing something towards whatever it
- 7:33is. And then he meets us right there
- 7:36with the next step. Or you know what we were
- 7:40expecting now we could see it with our physical eyes.
- 7:43And so it's such a, an opposite perspective on how to live, but
- 7:49it's living in the supernatural rather than the natural.
- 7:52And I think we just can get so get so hung up on what's logical
- 7:59and what we can see. And we'll, we'll step into
- 8:02something when we can see it. And that's not the way God
- 8:06works. And so we're gonna talk all
- 8:10about that. And so my other question was in
- 8:13your book, you had said the yoke of certainty that we often carry
- 8:18in life and that you encourage us to trade that for a better
- 8:23one. Jesus's yoke.
- 8:24I love how you just wrote that out right?
- 8:28Is that we can get weighed down by that yoke of certainty and
- 8:32the Lord wants us to trade it with his yoke.
- 8:35So can you expand on this and how it's so critical in order
- 8:39for us to move forward in faith in our relationship with God and
- 8:43his plans for us? Yeah, absolutely.
- 8:46And so when I started exploring this topic, Jamie, I realized
- 8:51that this really goes back to the garden.
- 8:54And I, I looked at that initial question that the serpent asked
- 8:59Eve. Did God really say, which I
- 9:02think that question still echoes today when we ask these
- 9:06questions, you know, did God really say, is this really what
- 9:09he wants? Is this just me?
- 9:11But then also, what does he offer her?
- 9:14Well, he offers her knowledge and then he promised that
- 9:17promises that she will be like God.
- 9:20And so that's really key there. And when Eve takes the fruit,
- 9:26Genesis notes that it was a delight to the eyes, and so God
- 9:32stopped being her delight in that moment.
- 9:35She took her focus off the Lord and it was more of a delight to
- 9:40her than obeying what God had told her to do.
- 9:45And I think obviously, you know, that that was a dividing moment
- 9:48where it sins separated us from God.
- 9:51But also I think that in that moment, humanity took on this
- 9:56yoke of I need more than what God has chosen to give me.
- 10:02I need to know more than he has given me.
- 10:06I need just more information and there was something that was
- 10:11desirable about that. And we can chase that same thing
- 10:16today. We think if I just had a little
- 10:20bit more knowledge, if I just had a little bit more insight
- 10:23into the future and what the future holds, then I'll have
- 10:28that security that I long for and I'll be able to move forward
- 10:32because I'll be confident. But when we let go of that and
- 10:36we release that, we can enjoy the peace that he offers us for
- 10:41today. He tells us his yoke is easy and
- 10:44his burden is light. And that doesn't mean that our
- 10:48lives are going to be easy and light and then we're not going
- 10:51to struggle. But it means that He's going to
- 10:54give us what we need for today, and we can rest in that.
- 10:58And when we try to race ahead into the future, we are taking
- 11:03on a burden that we were not intended to carry because we are
- 11:07finite creatures and we can't handle the knowledge and the
- 11:11weight of an infinite God. And so, yeah, that's that's what
- 11:17those two yokes are. And what I get at in that book
- 11:23is just, you know, how we can move forward in confidence with
- 11:27what he gives us. Yeah, so good.
- 11:30Well, writing on the heels of that, you explain surrendering
- 11:34our questions about tomorrow is crucial to hearing God's voice
- 11:39and living of life, of faith. So how so?
- 11:42Yeah. So I think that it's natural for
- 11:46us to have questions. You know, we have questions, we
- 11:49have expectations. And the answer to that is not to
- 11:53just brush it under the rug and pretend like it doesn't exist.
- 11:58But I ask ourselves, what is that fear pointing to?
- 12:02You know it, our fear is like a warning light and it's pointing
- 12:06to something else that happened that perhaps we haven't dealt
- 12:10with and we haven't surrendered to the Lord.
- 12:13And so it could be past trauma we haven't dealt with.
- 12:17It could be an insecurity that we need to surrender to Him, or
- 12:22it could be just a desire to see the future when God hasn't
- 12:27chosen to reveal that to us. And so when we ask ourselves
- 12:31those questions and what is it that this fear is about, then we
- 12:35can come to the Lord with that and ask him for his help and
- 12:40surrender that to him. But the answer isn't to just
- 12:43ignore it, because otherwise we're we're just going to live
- 12:48in that cyclical pattern. Yeah.
- 12:50I mean, I always say God, God knows what's going on in your
- 12:53heart. And you know, you got your
- 12:55questions and you're wrestling with something and you're
- 12:59battling fear. There is the spirit of fear that
- 13:02Second Timothy or he talks about.
- 13:04Exactly. The spirit of fear is what He
- 13:07does not want us to. Get.
- 13:10The way of moving forward with his plans and what he has for
- 13:14us. And I wrote down a quote that
- 13:16you said in your book. It was so beautiful.
- 13:19You said this is the certainty we have when we step into the
- 13:23unknown, that Jesus is applauding, saying, yes, my
- 13:26child, you can step into the uncertainty without fear because
- 13:30I am already there. I am on the other side of the
- 13:33future. You can't see it.
- 13:35You can move forward even if you're afraid because I will
- 13:38never shame you or disown you. And I thought that was written
- 13:43so beautifully because as believers, we know that, you
- 13:47know, we should not be living in a spirit of fear, but of, you
- 13:51know, power, love and a our mind.
- 13:53And that's just getting rid. There's so much going on the
- 13:57battlefield in our mind, right? And we we tackle those lies that
- 14:01the enemy shoots at us with the word of God.
- 14:04And so you shared too, that we should allow facing fear to move
- 14:11us towards Jesus, not a way. And I think that was so key that
- 14:16you said that because so many people think I'm not supposed to
- 14:20be doing this because I'm feeling, you know, freaked out.
- 14:24But really, like it is a charge to go after because that's where
- 14:29God wants to work in and through us.
- 14:32And that's where we can rely on him even more than our own
- 14:36strength or our own abilities. So, you know, like for me, it
- 14:39was fear speaking. Hello, I've got a podcast.
- 14:42And it was like, it wouldn't go away unless I did it.
- 14:46I had to do it. I had to face the fear and do it
- 14:50and call out God's word and destroy the lie.
- 14:54So where have you seen that in your life where you are?
- 14:57Just like I have to speak truth to this fear.
- 15:00That's a good question with me. One fear that I had was about
- 15:05two years ago, 2 1/2 maybe. I had felt called by God for a
- 15:10while to start my own coaching business where I would coach
- 15:14other writers. And it was much like you with
- 15:16the podcast. I kept making excuses, saying
- 15:20I'm not qualified, I need this, you know, X whatever it is, and
- 15:26it just would not go away. And finally, a company that I
- 15:31work for now that that I had come to trust offered training
- 15:36on becoming certified as a coach.
- 15:39And it was just like God saying, here you go, you know, you don't
- 15:44have any more excuses. I'm I'm giving you this
- 15:47opportunity. I mean, of course I had to say
- 15:49yes to the opportunity. I had to make a investment to do
- 15:52that. But that was him removing the
- 15:56last excuse I had. And once I did that, I still had
- 16:02some fears and some insecurities that I had to work through.
- 16:05But I I said yes, actually experienced a huge season of
- 16:12growth after that. And so it's amazing how when we
- 16:16say yes, even after we've prolonged it and put it off, we
- 16:22can experience growth like we haven't in months or years just
- 16:27because we're being obedient to what He wants us to do.
- 16:30So good and he's just so faithful.
- 16:34That is. Then we can see the rewards of
- 16:38us being faithful to him and saying yes to him.
- 16:41And then he knows like, oh, I can't entrust her with that.
- 16:45Well, you know, get ready because there's more coming.
- 16:47Yes, yes, it's always more. Yeah, always more.
- 16:51And you know that faith pleases them.
- 16:54Faith pleases God like we know and his scripture says.
- 16:58And so your amazing book, it centers around 3 truths that
- 17:04Jesus spoke in John 10. I think this was so good.
- 17:07And one of them you explained in John 1027 where Jesus says my
- 17:12sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me.
- 17:15So why do you think? I mean, this is just so common.
- 17:20I think we all can go through doubt.
- 17:22And I think that's the whole point of having faith, 'cause
- 17:26you can't have faith and doubt coexisting, you have to get rid
- 17:31of doubt. And so why do some of us doubt
- 17:35our ability hear God's voice? And how can we move past it?
- 17:39Yeah, I think really the the key or, or the core answer to that
- 17:46question, and it could be a number of different things, but
- 17:48we have allowed another voice in our life to become louder than
- 17:52gods. And that is one of the things
- 17:55that I address in the book is that we have to be intentional
- 18:00about getting alone with the Lord and even coming to the Lord
- 18:04with things that we can often compartmentalize or keep closed
- 18:10off from him, whether it's our fears, our desires, our dreams,
- 18:16all of that. God wants all of it.
- 18:18He doesn't want just a piece of us.
- 18:21He wants it all. And so the more that we come to
- 18:25him and that ongoing conversation, I think the more
- 18:29that we learn to discern his voice.
- 18:32But a lot of times when we doubt, it's because another
- 18:36voice has become louder. And, and that could be any
- 18:39number of voices. It could be somebody in our
- 18:42sphere of influence. It could be social media, it
- 18:46could be any one of the million sources of entertainment that we
- 18:51have in today's culture. But there's so many voices.
- 18:54I actually use this analogy. And one of the chapters, I can't
- 18:58remember what chapter it is right now.
- 19:01There was a Pandora commercial that came out several years ago
- 19:05and the video went viral. And it was these kids were
- 19:11blindfolded. They're probably about 8 of
- 19:13them. And they were placed in this
- 19:17huge warehouse. And their mothers were on the
- 19:20other side of the room. This was around Mother's Day.
- 19:24And so it was promoting their jewelry around Mother's Day.
- 19:27And so the kids were blindfolded.
- 19:29They were spun around a few times, and then they were
- 19:33released. And the object was to go find
- 19:36their mother. And every single one of these
- 19:38kids found their mother without fail, without being able to see.
- 19:45And so the question I asked was, if those kids were in a room
- 19:51with thousands of people shouting their names, do you
- 19:56think they would have been able to find their mothers?
- 19:58Well, probably not, because it would have been too distracting.
- 20:03It would have been too chaotic. But I think a lot of times we
- 20:07feel like we can hear from God and we can engage with the Lord
- 20:12while we are also simultaneously being bombarded with all of
- 20:16these other voices that are infiltrating our lives.
- 20:20And we just can't. We have got to get intentional
- 20:24and we have got to get alone with him and just be wise.
- 20:28And who we choose to listen to, who we choose not to listen to.
- 20:32And so, yeah, I think that that's really the key is that we
- 20:37we just have to be intentional about learning what he sounds
- 20:41like. Yeah, yeah, I it's, it's
- 20:44spending time with him, like you said.
- 20:46I mean it's. The same as you know your your
- 20:49first date with your husband like you know him way more now
- 20:53than. That yeah, yeah.
- 20:55And so I think so many of us want to hear God's voice, but we
- 20:58don't want to take the time to, yeah, read who he is, you know,
- 21:02his study, who he is, his character or read his word and,
- 21:06and to immerse ourselves and his truth that shows all about who
- 21:11he is and his character and who we are and him.
- 21:14And, and so it really is taking that that time on a daily basis
- 21:21to commune with him and have a dialogue with him and, and read
- 21:25all about who he is. So good you had shared how we
- 21:30perceive as a closed door can actually be a distraction.
- 21:35So can you explain how we can know the difference between a
- 21:38closed door and a distraction? I think this was such a good
- 21:42thing that you had put in your book.
- 21:45Yeah, I think that that one of the keys there, and I use a
- 21:50couple of different stories in that chapter, but a lot of times
- 21:54what I have perceived as a closed door was actually just a
- 21:57distraction. And what that means basically
- 22:01is, you know, there were all these obstacles that came along
- 22:05after I walked through this perceived door that God was
- 22:09opening. And they, they just drained me,
- 22:13you know, and I think that one of the key questions we have to
- 22:18ask ourselves is, is this just making me uncomfortable or is
- 22:24this actually God saying no? Because God is not vague.
- 22:31You know, God is not a God of chaos.
- 22:34He's not a God of confusion. And so he is more than capable
- 22:39of closing a door and making it absolutely clear.
- 22:45And we can still try to bang our way down it.
- 22:48I think that sometimes we just get uncomfortable and we get
- 22:53tired. And if you're tired, then take a
- 22:56nap. You know, don't, don't say, OK,
- 22:59This is why I'm quitting this and it's over.
- 23:02Get the rest that you need and persevere and what God has
- 23:06called you to do. But sometimes we just need to to
- 23:10take a rest and step away from whatever it is and then find
- 23:15that replenishment that we need to move forward.
- 23:18That's so good. OK, let's talk about the desires
- 23:21you had written in chapter 3. I believe say our view of who
- 23:27God is will always affect whether or not we trust them
- 23:31with our desires. So why do you think that
- 23:33bringing our desires to God is crucial to moving forward in our
- 23:38spiritual lives? I I thought the way you wrote
- 23:41this was so beautiful. Yeah, yeah, I think that it's,
- 23:44it's what I mentioned before, Jamie, it's, it's God wants all
- 23:48of us, You know, he doesn't want us to just give him a piece here
- 23:52and a piece there. But I think that the reason why
- 23:56viewing him with a, with a healthy view and and this can be
- 24:01a lifelong process. I mean, I had a lot of distorted
- 24:05views of who God was that I had to work through in my early
- 24:08adult life. And then I'm, I'm still working
- 24:10through, but we are all in the process of refinement.
- 24:14But I think that if we view God as just this distant rule
- 24:19enforcer, you know, he's waiting for us to mess up.
- 24:23He's waiting for us to falter. Then we're not going to want to
- 24:28share things with him because we're not going to trust, you
- 24:33know, that he'll treat those dreams and desires with a
- 24:36delicate hand. If we see him as the loving
- 24:39father he is, then we'll want to share with Him, and we'll want
- 24:45to come to Him. And I talk about my own kids.
- 24:47You know how just being a mom was one of the biggest ways that
- 24:52God taught me that He wants that, You know, He wants me to
- 24:57come to Him because my kids come to me with their desires there.
- 25:00There's no shame there. There's No Fear.
- 25:03And I'm receptive to that. And I love it when they do that.
- 25:07And so how much more will our Father be open and pleased when
- 25:12we do that? Yeah, that's so good.
- 25:15I have this kind of going on in my spirit that maybe somebody's
- 25:19maybe asking this to themselves while they're listening to this
- 25:23podcast. How can we know like the
- 25:25promptings of the Holy Spirit? What if they had a dream on
- 25:30their heart writing a book, maybe something they want to
- 25:33start. Maybe it's a job change.
- 25:35It's a decision deciding to marry someone, deciding they
- 25:39need direction for their kids or whatever it what is some
- 25:44encouragement that you can give where they're like, how do I
- 25:49know? I mean, we're talking about,
- 25:51we're familiar with his voice, but I'm always about the how to.
- 25:55'S and. What are some steps that maybe
- 25:57you encourage those that are clients of yours?
- 26:00Yeah, yeah. So a couple of questions that I
- 26:05would ask is or what is the benefit of staying where I am?
- 26:12You know, it, is it just comfort?
- 26:14Is it familiarity? If it's one of those two things,
- 26:18then that's not a good reason. Yeah.
- 26:22I'm just going to stay. And I've used those reasons
- 26:24myself many times, but that's not a good reason to stay where
- 26:28you are. And then, you know, ask
- 26:31yourself, does this doing this thing, whatever it is.
- 26:35And, and sometimes this is very clear and, and other times it
- 26:39isn't. But a lot of times I find it's
- 26:41pretty clear. Does this show my love for God?
- 26:45And does it show my love for others?
- 26:47Or is this out of my love for God and out of my love for
- 26:50others? And if the answer to those two
- 26:52questions is yes, then why would God say no?
- 26:57You know, why? Why would He want you to
- 26:59withhold that or to say no to that?
- 27:02And like I said before, if you step forward and that is not of
- 27:07the Lord, then He's God. He can take that away or He can
- 27:11close that door. But I think that you can move
- 27:14forward with confidence and know that He's for you.
- 27:18Yeah, it's better to move forward, to just stand still.
- 27:22I mean, I heard a Bible teacher, she said that you're never
- 27:26standing still. If anything, you're moving
- 27:28backwards because you should always be moving forward.
- 27:31That's what she. Said, and it was.
- 27:33Just thought provoking and that stuck with me.
- 27:36OK. I always like to end our time
- 27:38together with a take away. Something that the listener can
- 27:41ponder on or take action in. Yeah.
- 27:43So the nugget that I would give to our listeners today is to
- 27:48just come to God with any area where you feel stuck or you feel
- 27:53hesitant to move forward and just ask him, God, is this
- 27:58hesitation from you or how do you want me to move forward and
- 28:03just be completely honest with him and that.
- 28:06And I think that sometimes we try to withhold those fears and
- 28:11those areas of our lives where we're stuck.
- 28:14But the more that we come to him with that, the more we'll see
- 28:18his leading. And so that would be the
- 28:20encouragement. Well.
- 28:21Thank you. Share with us where people can
