- 0:00Speaker 1: And welcome back to iHeartMedia Headquarters, Aaron Hartford Hey. Tickets
- 0:06Speaker 1: for all seven seven Yukon football home game seven not
- 0:10Speaker 1: six seven, starting with September SEVENTHS matchup with Merrimack NOOW
- 0:14Speaker 1: on sale at Yukon tickets dot com. Yukon Huskies Football.
- 0:18Speaker 1: It's time to kick it off. We're here with Jim
- 0:19Speaker 1: Moore on, Mike Crispino and coach. We were talking about
- 0:23Speaker 1: transfers and let's get a little specific here. You've got
- 0:26Speaker 1: a kicker coming from Indiana who who's got a great leg,
- 0:29Speaker 1: Chris Freeman. And it's interesting because special teams are really meaningful.
- 0:34Speaker 1: They matter, they can win your game. I mean, making
- 0:37Speaker 1: that call that had to be a tough one. And
- 0:39Speaker 1: when you got a guy like him coming in, now,
- 0:42Speaker 1: how does that kind of elevate your offensive approach in
- 0:45Speaker 1: the sense that you got to score more points obviously,
- 0:48Speaker 1: but now you've got a guy with a big leg
- 0:49Speaker 1: like that that could really be helpful.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Well, we hope that he's only trotting out there to
- 0:54Speaker 2: kick extra points, right and kickoffs, that's kind of the goal.
- 0:57Speaker 2: But it's always nice to have a kicker. It has experience,
- 1:02Speaker 2: you know, in front of big crowds and pressure situations
- 1:04Speaker 2: against great opponents that you can rely on that's got
- 1:07Speaker 2: a strong leg and uh, you know we've had in
- 1:11Speaker 2: my opinion, with Joe and Noay, we had a couple
- 1:14Speaker 2: of good kickers. Yeah, they just had you know, Joe
- 1:17Speaker 2: went through the knee injury and no way. You know,
- 1:19Speaker 2: he decided to transfer and we were really lucky to
- 1:22Speaker 2: bring Chris in, who's an experienced guy, and he's a
- 1:25Speaker 2: grad transfer. He's very mature, it takes his craft very seriously,
- 1:29Speaker 2: and he's been a great addition to our team.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Yeah, quarterbacks are important.
- 1:33Speaker 2: It's crazy that you asked me about a kicker before
- 1:36Speaker 2: you even ask me why.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Well I didn't. I didn't.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I mean, no offense to Chris, but most like that's well,
- 1:44Speaker 2: you can tell him.
- 1:45Speaker 1: You can tell him tomorrow. Hey, I was on this
- 1:47Speaker 1: show last night and first question asked me about was
- 1:50Speaker 1: the place kicker. But obviously I was delaying the quarterback question.
- 1:55Speaker 1: But Nick Evers comes from a Big ten program. He
- 1:58Speaker 1: is a guy that's got a lot of talent. You know,
- 2:01Speaker 1: just listening to some of the other players talk about
- 2:03Speaker 1: the QBS, they're all very respectful, you know, no one's
- 2:06Speaker 1: going to say, well, this guy's better than that guy.
- 2:08Speaker 1: And Joe Fagnano was the guy that won the job
- 2:11Speaker 1: last year then got hurt right away. So as you
- 2:14Speaker 1: look at QBS, I mean, you listen to talk radio
- 2:18Speaker 1: around the country, at all they talk about is quarterbacks.
- 2:21Speaker 1: We ought to know who the quarterback is. I don't
- 2:23Speaker 1: expect you're going to tell me tonight, But what are
- 2:25Speaker 1: you looking for from that position? When you look at
- 2:28Speaker 1: the guys who are throwing.
- 2:29Speaker 2: The football, Well, number one is taking care of the football,
- 2:33Speaker 2: not turning it over to the other team. That's you know,
- 2:36Speaker 2: that's that's the number one variable in winning and losing
- 2:40Speaker 2: football games is turnover ratio. So he's got to make
- 2:43Speaker 2: great decisions with the football in his hand. You you know,
- 2:46Speaker 2: I think in today's college game, having the ability to
- 2:49Speaker 2: run is a real bonus, you know, because it puts
- 2:52Speaker 2: tremendous stress on a defense and a defensive coordinator when
- 2:55Speaker 2: you know you've got everything covered up perfectly down the field,
- 2:58Speaker 2: and all of a sudden, the quarterback takes off and
- 3:01Speaker 2: he gets the first down or he gets a big,
- 3:03Speaker 2: you know, big chunk. I think he obviously to score points,
- 3:07Speaker 2: you have to be able to throw the football, you know,
- 3:09Speaker 2: with accuracy, you have to be able to throw at velocity,
- 3:11Speaker 2: you have to throw a touch on deep balls. And
- 3:13Speaker 2: I think that we've got a room of four guys,
- 3:16Speaker 2: notwithstanding the two walk ons. You know when you talk
- 3:19Speaker 2: about Joe, who was, you know, the starter at the
- 3:21Speaker 2: start of last year and then had the unfortunate shoulder
- 3:23Speaker 2: injury against Georgia State, came out against n C State
- 3:26Speaker 2: in Week one and let us down the field and
- 3:28Speaker 2: then you know, they were a good defense and we
- 3:30Speaker 2: stalled a little bit at win all and Joe bringing
- 3:33Speaker 2: in Nick Evers, who is you know, he was an
- 3:37Speaker 2: elite eleven guy, who was a top ten and lead
- 3:39Speaker 2: eleven guy, which is, you know, the number one quarterback
- 3:41Speaker 2: competition in the country for high schoolers. Went to Oklahoma
- 3:45Speaker 2: and then Wisconsin. He's one of those guys that was,
- 3:47Speaker 2: you know, the victim of coaching changes and not having
- 3:50Speaker 2: an opportunity. But he's a very talented young man. Hasn't
- 3:53Speaker 2: played in games a lot. I think he's only had
- 3:55Speaker 2: a few snaps when Oklahoma played Texas and the whatever
- 3:59Speaker 2: they call it down there. Yeah, I don't know. This
- 4:02Speaker 2: is Red River Showdown. Or something something like that. And
- 4:07Speaker 2: then you know Tucker McDonald, who was with us last
- 4:09Speaker 2: year as a freshman, a red shirted who was having
- 4:12Speaker 2: a really good camp, hurt his knee and his hamstring
- 4:14Speaker 2: and his shoulder all at once, basically, and you know
- 4:17Speaker 2: that's kind of held him back, but he's he's picking
- 4:19Speaker 2: it up. And then we've got a young man named
- 4:20Speaker 2: Cole Oliver who was a pretty highly recruited kid. TEXA,
- 4:24Speaker 2: A and M came in on him late and he
- 4:26Speaker 2: decided to stick with his commitment to us, and he's
- 4:28Speaker 2: you know, he's this big six seven guy who's got
- 4:30Speaker 2: a rifle arm. But they all have the qualities that
- 4:32Speaker 2: they're all very smart, they're all team guys. They all
- 4:36Speaker 2: got really good arm talent, and they all can run,
- 4:39Speaker 2: even Cole. You know, you take guy six fot seven,
- 4:41Speaker 2: can he run? He can run enough. You know, he's
- 4:43Speaker 2: not he's not my vic out there, but he can
- 4:46Speaker 2: run enough. So I feel like the quarterback room in
- 4:49Speaker 2: its entirety is the best that it's been since I've
- 4:52Speaker 2: been here. For sure. You know, now we've got to
- 4:55Speaker 2: go out and perform, certainly, but there's four guys that
- 4:57Speaker 2: we feel as a staff that could go in and
- 4:59Speaker 2: if they are going right, and if we're running the
- 5:01Speaker 2: ball and playing good defense, that any of them could
- 5:03Speaker 2: go in and we'd have a chance to win the game.
- 5:05Speaker 1: You know, let's talk about it every two years ago,
- 5:07Speaker 1: you ran the ball really well top I think thirty
- 5:10Speaker 1: third in the country something like that. That was a real,
- 5:13Speaker 1: really good reason why you went six and six and
- 5:17Speaker 1: got the team to a bowl game. And you got
- 5:19Speaker 1: Victor Rosa coming back. And you got Cam Edwards who
- 5:21Speaker 1: was a surprise running back because of out of necessity
- 5:24Speaker 1: with all your injuries. Those two guys are really experienced
- 5:29Speaker 1: running back. So I mean, you got a good start
- 5:31Speaker 1: in the running back room with those two. And do
- 5:34Speaker 1: you do you feel like you need more in terms
- 5:36Speaker 1: of depth in that running back area.
- 5:38Speaker 2: No, well, no, I shouldn't say no. You always need more.
- 5:42Speaker 2: But you know, we brought in Mel Brown, who's he's
- 5:46Speaker 2: a lights out player. You know, we brought in Drel
- 5:48Speaker 2: Robinson from Charlotte who's a red shirt freshman. He's a
- 5:51Speaker 2: six foot to two hundred and ten pound guy who
- 5:54Speaker 2: can really run. I mean, we've got really good depth
- 5:56Speaker 2: right now, at least compared to what we've ever had,
- 5:58Speaker 2: and we found out last year we needed it because
- 6:00Speaker 2: you know, we had a bunch of guys go down,
- 6:02Speaker 2: which necessitated Cam stepping up. Cam is, you know, one
- 6:06Speaker 2: of the most improved players from year one to now
- 6:10Speaker 2: going into three that I've ever had in my career.
- 6:12Speaker 2: The thing, the way that he's matured as a young
- 6:15Speaker 2: man as a person and become a leader, become very
- 6:18Speaker 2: dependable running the football, pass protection, catching the football, his attitude,
- 6:24Speaker 2: his work ethic, He's really become exemplary. And I didn't
- 6:28Speaker 2: foresee that when he was a freshman. You know, he
- 6:30Speaker 2: was like a lot of I mean, why you have
- 6:32Speaker 2: to give these guys time. You remember they're coming from
- 6:34Speaker 2: high school, you know. But that's a good room. You know,
- 6:37Speaker 2: Victor's been hurt the last couple of weeks. He hasn't
- 6:39Speaker 2: done much. He should be ready for Maryland. But there's
- 6:42Speaker 2: there's there's a lot of production in that room, in
- 6:45Speaker 2: Victor and Cam and then in mel And we really
- 6:47Speaker 2: like Drell.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Yeah, Cam Edwards, Norwalk Connecticut guide obviously, so we love
- 6:53Speaker 1: the local thing. We're going to get to the offensive
- 6:55Speaker 1: line because you got to have guys that can block
- 6:58Speaker 1: for those guys and We're going to go defense because
- 7:00Speaker 1: Matt Brook's doing a heck of a job so far
- 7:02Speaker 1: with this three three five thing, which you got to
- 7:04Speaker 1: explain to me. We'll be back Jimour with us live
- 7:07Speaker 1: at iHeartMedia headquarters here in Hartford and a good crowd
- 7:12Speaker 1: on hand with us. This is the Yukon Football Coaches
- 7:15Speaker 1: Show on Learfield.
