Speaker 1: Chapter thirty five, in which Phileas Fogg does not have
• 0:03
Speaker 1: to repeat his orders to Passepartout twice. The dwellers in
• 0:10
Speaker 1: saddle Row would have been surprised the next day if
• 0:14
Speaker 1: they had been told that Phileas Fogg had returned home.
• 0:17
Speaker 1: His doors and windows were still closed. No appearance of
• 0:21
Speaker 1: change was visible. After leaving the station, mister Fogg gave
• 0:26
Speaker 1: passpartout instructions to purchase some provisions, and quietly went to
• 0:30
Speaker 1: his domicile. He bore his misfortune, with his habitual tranquility ruined,
• 0:38
Speaker 1: and by the blundering of the detective. After having steadily
• 0:42
Speaker 1: traversed that long journey, overcome a hundred obstacles, brave many dangers,
• 0:48
Speaker 1: and still found time to do some good on his way,
• 0:52
Speaker 1: to fail near the goal by a sudden event which
• 0:54
Speaker 1: he could not have foreseen, and against which he was unarmed.
• 0:59
Speaker 1: It was terrible, but a few pounds were left of
• 1:02
Speaker 1: the large sum he had carried with him. There only
• 1:06
Speaker 1: remained of his fortune the twenty thousand pounds deposited at bearings,
• 1:10
Speaker 1: and this amount he owed to his friends of the
• 1:12
Speaker 1: Reform Club. So great had been the expense of his
• 1:16
Speaker 1: tour that even had he won, it would not have
• 1:19
Speaker 1: enriched him. And it is probable that he had not
• 1:22
Speaker 1: sought to enrich himself, being a man who rather laid
• 1:26
Speaker 1: wages for honor's sake than for the stake proposed. But
• 1:30
Speaker 1: this wager totally ruined him. Mister Fogg's course, however, was
• 1:35
Speaker 1: fully decided upon he knew what remained for him to do.
• 1:40
Speaker 1: A room in the house in savle Row was set
• 1:42
Speaker 1: apart for auDA, who was overwhelmed with grief at her
• 1:45
Speaker 1: protector's misfortune. From the words which mister Fogg dropped, she
• 1:50
Speaker 1: saw that he was meditating some serious project. Knowing that
• 1:55
Speaker 1: Englishmen governed by a fixed idea sometimes resort to the
• 1:59
Speaker 1: desperate EXAs speedient of suicide, Passpartu kept a narrow watch
• 2:03
Speaker 1: upon his master, though he carefully concealed the appearance of
• 2:07
Speaker 1: so doing. First of all, the worthy fellow had gone
• 2:11
Speaker 1: up to his room and had extinguished the gas burner,
• 2:15
Speaker 1: which had been burning for eighty days. He had found
• 2:18
Speaker 1: in the letter box a bill from the gas company,
• 2:21
Speaker 1: and he thought it more than time to put a
• 2:23
Speaker 1: stop to this expense, which he had been doomed to bear.
• 2:28
Speaker 1: The night passed, mister Fogg went to bed, but did
• 2:32
Speaker 1: he sleep. Aouda did not once close her eyes. Passpartou
• 2:37
Speaker 1: watched all night like a faithful dog at his master's door.
• 2:43
Speaker 1: Mister Fogg called him in the morning and told him
• 2:45
Speaker 1: to get Aouda's breakfast and a cup of tea and
• 2:48
Speaker 1: a chop for himself. He desired Aouda to excuse him
• 2:52
Speaker 1: from breakfast and dinner, as his time would be absorbed
• 2:56
Speaker 1: all day in putting his affairs to rights. In the evening,
• 3:00
Speaker 1: he would ask permission to have a few moments conversation
• 3:02
Speaker 1: with the young lady. Passepartout, having received his orders, had
• 3:07
Speaker 1: nothing to do but obey them. He looked at his
• 3:10
Speaker 1: imperturbable master and could scarcely bring his mind to leave him.
• 3:16
Speaker 1: His heart was full and his conscience tortured by remorse,
• 3:20
Speaker 1: for he accused himself more bitterly than ever, of being
• 3:24
Speaker 1: the cause of the irretrievable disaster. Yes, if he had
• 3:29
Speaker 1: warned mister Fogg and had betrayed fixed his projects to him,
• 3:33
Speaker 1: his master would certainly not have given the detective passage
• 3:37
Speaker 1: to Liverpool. And then Passepartout could hold in no longer
• 3:44
Speaker 1: my master, mister Fogg he cried, why do you not
• 3:48
Speaker 1: curse me? It was my fault that I blame. No
• 3:52
Speaker 1: one returned Phileas Fogg, with perfect calmness. Go passepartout the
• 4:00
Speaker 1: room and went to find Aouda, to whom he delivered
• 4:03
Speaker 1: his master's message. Madam, he added.
• 4:07
Speaker 2: I can do nothing myself nothing. I have no influence
• 4:11
Speaker 2: over my master. But you, perhaps what influence could I have?
• 4:17
Speaker 2: Replied Aouda. Mister Fogg is influenced by no one. Has
• 4:22
Speaker 2: he ever understood that my gratitude to him is overflowing?
• 4:27
Speaker 2: Has he ever read my heart? My friend?
• 4:30
Speaker 1: He must not be left alone an instant? You say
• 4:33
Speaker 1: he is going to speak with me this evening, Yes, madam,
• 4:38
Speaker 1: probably to arrange for your protection and comfort in England
• 4:43
Speaker 1: we shall see, replied Aouda, becoming suddenly pensive. Throughout this
• 4:49
Speaker 1: day Sunday, the house in tsavo Row was as if uninhabited,
• 4:55
Speaker 1: and Phileas Fogg, for the first time since he had
• 4:57
Speaker 1: lived in that house, did not set out for for
• 5:00
Speaker 1: his club when Westminster clock struck half past eleven. Why
• 5:05
Speaker 1: should he present himself at the reform His friends no
• 5:08
Speaker 1: longer expected him there, as Phileas Fogg had not appeared
• 5:12
Speaker 1: in the saloon on the evening before Saturday, the twenty
• 5:15
Speaker 1: first of December, at a quarter before nine, he had
• 5:19
Speaker 1: lost his wager. It was not even necessary that he
• 5:23
Speaker 1: should go to his banker's for the twenty thousand pounds,
• 5:26
Speaker 1: for his antagonists already had his check in their hands,
• 5:30
Speaker 1: and they had only to fill it out and send
• 5:32
Speaker 1: it to the bearings to have the amount transferred to
• 5:34
Speaker 1: their credit. Mister Fogg therefore had no reason for going out,
• 5:39
Speaker 1: and so he remained at home. He shut himself up
• 5:43
Speaker 1: in his room and busied himself putting his affairs in order. Passepartout,
• 5:49
Speaker 1: continually ascended and descended the stairs. The hours were long
• 5:54
Speaker 1: for him. He listened at his master's door and looked
• 5:58
Speaker 1: through the keyhole, as if he had a perfect right
• 6:00
Speaker 1: to do so, and as if he feared that something
• 6:03
Speaker 1: terrible might happen at any moment. Sometimes he thought of Fix,
• 6:08
Speaker 1: but no longer in anger. Fix, like all the world,
• 6:12
Speaker 1: had been mistaken in Phileas Fogg, and had only done
• 6:15
Speaker 1: his duty in tracking and arresting him while he passepartout.
• 6:22
Speaker 1: This thought haunted him, and he never ceased cursing his
• 6:25
Speaker 1: miserable folly. Finding himself too wretched to remain alone, he
• 6:30
Speaker 1: knocked at Aouda's door, went into her room, seated himself
• 6:35
Speaker 1: without speaking, in a corner, and looked ruefully at the
• 6:38
Speaker 1: young woman. auDA was still pensive. About half past seven
• 6:44
Speaker 1: in the evening, mister Fogg sent to know if Aouda
• 6:46
Speaker 1: would receive him, and in a few moments he found
• 6:49
Speaker 1: himself alone with her. Phileas Fogg took a chair and
• 6:54
Speaker 1: sat down near the fireplace opposite Ouda. No emotion was
• 6:59
Speaker 1: visible on it face. Fogg returned, was exactly the fog
• 7:03
Speaker 1: who had gone away. There was the same calm, the
• 7:07
Speaker 1: same impassibility. He sat several minutes without speaking, then bending
• 7:14
Speaker 1: his eyes on aouda Madam, said he will you pardon
• 7:19
Speaker 1: me for bringing you to England? I, mister Fogg, replied Ouda,
• 7:26
Speaker 1: checking the pulsations of her heart. Please let me finish,
• 7:30
Speaker 1: returned mister Fogg. When I decided to bring you far
• 7:34
Speaker 1: away from the country which was so unsafe for you,
• 7:38
Speaker 1: I was rich and counted on putting a portion of
• 7:41
Speaker 1: my fortune at your disposal. Then your existence would have
• 7:45
Speaker 1: been free and happy. But now I am ruined. I
• 7:49
Speaker 1: know it mister Fogg, replied Aouda, and I ask you
• 7:53
Speaker 1: in my turn, will you forgive me for having followed you,
• 7:57
Speaker 1: and who knows, for having perhaps delayed you and thus
• 8:02
Speaker 1: contributed to your ruin. Madam. You could not remain in India,
• 8:07
Speaker 1: and your safety could only be assured by bringing you
• 8:10
Speaker 1: to such a distance that your persecutors could not take you. So,
• 8:15
Speaker 1: mister Fogg resumed, Aouda, not content with rescuing me from
• 8:20
Speaker 1: a terrible death, you thought yourself bound to secure my
• 8:24
Speaker 1: comfort in a foreign land, Yes, madam, but circumstances have
• 8:29
Speaker 1: been against me. Still I beg to place the little
• 8:33
Speaker 1: I have left at your service. But what will become
• 8:37
Speaker 1: of you, mister Fogg? As for me, madam, replied the
• 8:41
Speaker 1: gentleman coldly, I have need of nothing. But how do
• 8:47
Speaker 1: you look upon the fate, sir, which awaits you? As
• 8:51
Speaker 1: I am in the habit of doing. At least, said Aouda.
• 8:57
Speaker 1: Want should not overtake a man like you. Your friends.
• 9:01
Speaker 1: I have no friends, madam. Your relatives, I have no
• 9:07
Speaker 1: longer any relatives. I pity you, then, mister Fogg, for
• 9:13
Speaker 1: solitude is a sad thing with no heart to which
• 9:17
Speaker 1: to confide Your griefs, they say, though that misery itself
• 9:21
Speaker 1: shared by two sympathetic souls, may be borne with patience.
• 9:27
Speaker 1: They say so, madam, mister Fogg, said Aouda, rising and
• 9:33
Speaker 1: seizing his hand, do you wish at once a kinswoman
• 9:37
Speaker 1: and friend? Will you have me for your wife? Mister
• 9:43
Speaker 1: Fogg at this rose in his turn. There was an
• 9:47
Speaker 1: unwonted light in his eyes, and a slight trembling of
• 9:49
Speaker 1: his lips. Aouda looked into his face. The sincerity, rectitude, firmness,
• 9:56
Speaker 1: and sweetness of this soft glance of a noble woman
• 10:01
Speaker 1: who could dare all to save him, to whom she
• 10:04
Speaker 1: owed all, at first astonished, then penetrated him. He shut
• 10:09
Speaker 1: his eyes for an instant, as if to avoid her look.
• 10:13
Speaker 1: When he opened them again, I love you, he said, simply, Yes,
• 10:21
Speaker 1: by all that is holiest, I love you, and I
• 10:24
Speaker 1: am entirely yours. Ah, cried Aouda, pressing her hand to
• 10:30
Speaker 1: her heart. Passparteau was summoned and appeared immediately. Mister Fogg
• 10:36
Speaker 1: still held Aouda's hand in his own. Passepartout understood, and
• 10:41
Speaker 1: his big round face became as radiant as the tropical sun.
• 10:44
Speaker 1: At it Seneth. Mister Fogg asked him if it was
• 10:48
Speaker 1: not too late to notify the Reverend Samuel Wilson of
• 10:52
Speaker 1: mary le Bone Parrish that evening. Passpartieu smiled his most
• 10:57
Speaker 1: genial smile and said, never too late. It was five
• 11:01
Speaker 1: minutes past eight. Will it be for tomorrow Monday? For
• 11:08
Speaker 1: tomorrow Monday, said mister Fogg, turning to AOUDA Yes, for
• 11:14
Speaker 1: tomorrow Monday, she replied. Passepartout hurried off as fast as
• 11:20
Speaker 1: his legs could carry him. End of chapter
