- 0:01Speaker 1: It's the return, the return of Leggy's Kitchen. Haven't seen
- 0:06Speaker 1: it in a minute.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Yeah, you know this whole doing this show from Broncos
- 0:10Speaker 2: facility kind of stink.
- 0:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I like, don't contend you're working all the time. Yeah.
- 0:14Speaker 2: I miss the fridge, I miss the cabinetry. I miss
- 0:17Speaker 2: all the pomp and circumstance that frozen dinners.
- 0:20Speaker 3: So let's go out to the ramos Law hotline car accident.
- 0:23Speaker 3: You need ramos Law medical doctor and attorney ramos Law
- 0:25Speaker 3: dot com.
- 0:26Speaker 1: What you get cooking up in there?
- 0:27Speaker 4: Leggy?
- 0:27Speaker 1: What you got?
- 0:29Speaker 5: We got a lot of split infinitives and sentence fragments
- 0:33Speaker 5: right now. I like it?
- 0:36Speaker 1: So, Jeff, so a couple things.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Uh, Can I just go back to the last week
- 0:40Speaker 3: for a second, because I know there's a game tonight,
- 0:41Speaker 3: but just to go back to last week. I apologized
- 0:46Speaker 3: to the listeners of this show because I had a
- 0:48Speaker 3: very bad tone for a team that's won six straight.
- 0:52Speaker 3: But I just I can't get over the offense looking
- 0:56Speaker 3: the way it does for three straight quarters. And I'm
- 0:58Speaker 3: just I know that this is being nitpicky for a
- 1:01Speaker 3: team that has the best record in the NFL.
- 1:04Speaker 2: But am I wrong?
- 1:05Speaker 3: To feel that way, because all I can think about
- 1:07Speaker 3: is with how good this defense is, you just need
- 1:09Speaker 3: to be a mediocre offense to really have a shot
- 1:11Speaker 3: at doing something big.
- 1:12Speaker 6: Am I wrong?
- 1:14Speaker 5: Well, I mean the last time they put a trophy
- 1:17Speaker 5: in the case, it was this profile. You know, in
- 1:21Speaker 5: fact that this offense is probably even a tinge more
- 1:28Speaker 5: reliable than the injured Peyton Manning brock Osweiler offense was
- 1:33Speaker 5: at times in twenty fifteen. But we kind of, you know,
- 1:38Speaker 5: as time goes on, we sort of you know, gloss
- 1:41Speaker 5: over what happened then. I mean, they were in close game.
- 1:44Speaker 5: I think they were in nine one score games that year.
- 1:47Speaker 5: They had games where they gave up a lot of points,
- 1:50Speaker 5: even late in the year Steelers game, you know, even
- 1:52Speaker 5: for a great offense. You know, they won ugly. And
- 1:57Speaker 5: every week we had discussions about kenned Ty team really
- 2:00Speaker 5: win like this, you know, week to week to week
- 2:04Speaker 5: they can I think, what's happened here is what happens
- 2:07Speaker 5: a lot of times these days is you know, the
- 2:12Speaker 5: season starts and you know, folks are thinking, you know,
- 2:16Speaker 5: hopefully this is a playoff team. Well, you know, suddenly
- 2:19Speaker 5: you get to the halfway mark, of the season, they're
- 2:21Speaker 5: tied for the best record in the league, and now
- 2:24Speaker 5: you're sort of moving the bar a little bit. Everybody.
- 2:27Speaker 5: It's like, Okay, it's playoff team would be cool, but
- 2:31Speaker 5: this team could really do stuff now, And I think
- 2:33Speaker 5: that's when you start poking at it. I would say,
- 2:37Speaker 5: for me, in the ten thousand foot view, the playoff
- 2:41Speaker 5: worthiness and your ability to win in January a lot
- 2:45Speaker 5: more impacted right now by special teams. They cannot play
- 2:51Speaker 5: special team. They can play offense this way and slug
- 2:55Speaker 5: it out in January. I have no doubt because I've
- 2:57Speaker 5: seen teams do it. You can win slugfests in January
- 3:03Speaker 5: in the playoffs when the tempo goes down, but you
- 3:06Speaker 5: cannot win with special teams that make one or two
- 3:10Speaker 5: or three plays a game that put you in a
- 3:12Speaker 5: bad spot.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Just to follow up on that real quickly, where where,
- 3:19Speaker 3: if anywhere, have you seen improvement within the offense from
- 3:22Speaker 3: week one to week nine.
- 3:24Speaker 5: I see moments when they sort of stick to certain things,
- 3:28Speaker 5: and I'm always curious when they'll sort of commit to
- 3:33Speaker 5: a smaller menu for a little bit, you know, be
- 3:36Speaker 5: better at a few things, then try to be so
- 3:39Speaker 5: good at a lot of things I think for this
- 3:42Speaker 5: group right now would help, and they have moments and
- 3:45Speaker 5: games when they do that, especially in comeback Mode's that's
- 3:49Speaker 5: why their fourth quarters have been so good, because when
- 3:52Speaker 5: you go up tempo or move it quicker, and I
- 3:56Speaker 5: don't care what offense you're in or what Hall of
- 3:58Speaker 5: Fame quarterback you have, the menu always get smaller. And
- 4:03Speaker 5: this group has responded to that. So I'd be curious
- 4:07Speaker 5: about that earlier in games. But you know that's Sean
- 4:12Speaker 5: Payton believes in, you know, massive diversity in an offense.
- 4:16Speaker 5: He believes in play to play personnel changes. He thinks
- 4:21Speaker 5: that stresses defenses, and you know, frankly, he's probably got
- 4:25Speaker 5: a lot of proof on his side of the table
- 4:28Speaker 5: in years past that that works. But I just think
- 4:32Speaker 5: this group needs a little something different from him, even
- 4:36Speaker 5: and occasionally they find that sweet spot.
- 4:40Speaker 2: I'll tell you what I find interesting is that they're
- 4:42Speaker 2: running the football pretty effectively overall. I mean, there's seventh
- 4:46Speaker 2: in the league as a team rushing the ball, which
- 4:48Speaker 2: is what we've been asking for, which is what they've
- 4:51Speaker 2: wanted to do, But it doesn't seem to make things
- 4:55Speaker 2: go better. It would seem that it would, if anything,
- 4:58Speaker 2: it would help out in the past, Jeff. But it
- 5:01Speaker 2: just doesn't. It doesn't seem to there's no correlation there.
- 5:05Speaker 5: Well, and I think that's what even Sean keeps talking
- 5:09Speaker 5: about identity and and sequencing. You'll hear that word a
- 5:13Speaker 5: lot from Sean Payton, sequencing, and you know, even he
- 5:18Speaker 5: would say he's still trying to find the right you know,
- 5:22Speaker 5: collection of plays strung together, because like I say, sometimes
- 5:26Speaker 5: they throw the ball very well and sometimes they run
- 5:29Speaker 5: the ball very well. It's just they don't get many
- 5:32Speaker 5: drives when they hook those two together. And I think
- 5:36Speaker 5: if they do, this is a pretty good team and
- 5:41Speaker 5: one you wouldn't want to mess with later in the
- 5:44Speaker 5: season because you know, defense these days, it's harder to
- 5:49Speaker 5: win in today's NFL with just a defensive profile, but
- 5:55Speaker 5: you can be a really, really difficult team to play
- 5:59Speaker 5: if you have that defensive profile in your sort of
- 6:03Speaker 5: your resume there. And I think that's what and that's consistent.
- 6:08Speaker 5: You know, when a team's good on defense, they're usually
- 6:10Speaker 5: good on defense. On the road at night, during the day,
- 6:14Speaker 5: in bad weather, you know, you're good on defense. It's
- 6:17Speaker 5: not so beholden to all the other factors. So I
- 6:22Speaker 5: think it's what you're looking at with that run game stuff.
- 6:26Speaker 5: Is is that sequencing? If they can somehow hook the
- 6:29Speaker 5: two together, they would they would have a little something going.
- 6:32Speaker 4: Hey, Jeffy, have you heard anything about the status of
- 6:34Speaker 4: Patrick's certain Is there any chance he's viable next week?
- 6:38Speaker 4: Or is it going to be bye week?
- 6:39Speaker 2: What is it?
- 6:41Speaker 1: You know?
- 6:41Speaker 5: VI, I keep hearing now, you know, this stuff could
- 6:44Speaker 5: change day to day. I've kept hearing all along that
- 6:49Speaker 5: their optimistic view was if he came back after the bye,
- 6:53Speaker 5: they thought that would be tremendous. You know. Would they
- 6:57Speaker 5: like to have them for the Chiefs, you know, certainly,
- 7:00Speaker 5: But I don't think that's one they're gonna mess with,
- 7:04Speaker 5: you know, to get him back a week early and
- 7:07Speaker 5: possibly lose him for games later in the year that
- 7:11Speaker 5: mean a lot. So I think they're gonna be careful
- 7:15Speaker 5: with it, but that I'm still hearing hopefully after the bye.
- 7:20Speaker 5: But obviously if he has a good you know, a
- 7:23Speaker 5: good week put together at some point, that could be sooner.
- 7:27Speaker 5: But that's originally what I've been hearing.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Uh.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Jeff Laglo with us ESPN dot Com all conversations with
- 7:33Speaker 3: Legy brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical
- 7:35Speaker 3: Workers ib dip IBEW Local sixty eight.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Start with the job and with the career. The deadline.
- 7:42Speaker 1: So the rumors were that the Broncos are making calls
- 7:44Speaker 1: about Jalen Model.
- 7:45Speaker 2: What did you hear?
- 7:47Speaker 1: Uh?
- 7:48Speaker 5: I think making calls was really strong? Yeah, they I
- 7:51Speaker 5: mean they fielded calls and they kicked the tires on
- 7:54Speaker 5: some things. Uh, but they weren't going to give up
- 7:57Speaker 5: a lot. And when when everybody in the league basically
- 8:01Speaker 5: started asking first rounders for starters, I think that slowed
- 8:06Speaker 5: some of the role for some of it. Like Buffalo
- 8:09Speaker 5: was like the Broncos, they were interested in making a
- 8:12Speaker 5: deal if it worked out, but they weren't surrendering maximum
- 8:16Speaker 5: draft capital, you know, for short term players when they
- 8:20Speaker 5: didn't think they really needed that. So yeah, they looked
- 8:24Speaker 5: at some things, but it was never as close as
- 8:26Speaker 5: some people said. And there was interest in Waddle, but
- 8:30Speaker 5: the Dolphins were asking a lot, and you know, because
- 8:35Speaker 5: teams were looking around and they were seeing teams get
- 8:38Speaker 5: a lot for starting caliber players. And how about former
- 8:43Speaker 5: Broncos scout Darren Moujie doing work for the Chests.
- 8:48Speaker 3: I think it's smart what they did. By the way,
- 8:49Speaker 3: I think it's really smart. They knew their team was
- 8:51Speaker 3: going nowhere.
- 8:52Speaker 5: And I'll tell you, you know, it's everybody says he
- 8:55Speaker 5: gave up Sauce and all those things. You know, they
- 8:58Speaker 5: were nineteen games under five hund with games Sauce Gardner played.
- 9:01Speaker 5: So there's a lot bigger issues than an all pro corner.
- 9:06Speaker 5: But folks should know, like the twenty sixth draft is
- 9:10Speaker 5: considered just okay, you know, not awesome at the top
- 9:13Speaker 5: of the board. But the twenty seven draft where they
- 9:17Speaker 5: now have three first round picks, and look, a lot
- 9:20Speaker 5: can change in a you know, a year and a half.
- 9:22Speaker 5: I get it, But right now, you talk to any
- 9:26Speaker 5: personnel guy in the league, the twenty seven draft has
- 9:28Speaker 5: looked at like with you know, stars in their eyes.
- 9:32Speaker 5: So you could see Muji pointing for that one. You know,
- 9:36Speaker 5: three first rounders and what will be a very strong
- 9:39Speaker 5: board if everybody comes out, they expect.
- 9:42Speaker 2: To speaking of a mess. What do we look at
- 9:46Speaker 2: tonight with the Raiders. They've got to Stut on defense
- 9:48Speaker 2: and his stut on offense, and not a whole lot
- 9:50Speaker 2: of anything else. I is it an institutional problem? Franchise problem.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Is it a talent problem, coaching problem, all encompassing?
- 9:58Speaker 1: What is it, Jeff?
- 9:59Speaker 2: What are we seeing?
- 10:00Speaker 5: Well, we've seen it here. You know, once you lose
- 10:03Speaker 5: the mojo, you know, no one in the NFL is
- 10:06Speaker 5: excited to let you get back up off the mat.
- 10:09Speaker 5: It's not a great vocation for recovery. You know, people
- 10:14Speaker 5: aren't gonna say, oh, we feel bad for you. Here,
- 10:16Speaker 5: here's a helping hand. No, when you get when you're down,
- 10:19Speaker 5: people just want to smash you, uh until you like
- 10:24Speaker 5: refuse to get up. So that's the struggle in the league.
- 10:27Speaker 5: Once you lose the ability to be competitive weekend week out,
- 10:32Speaker 5: it's really hard to get it back. And that's that's
- 10:35Speaker 5: where the Raiders are and I think they're facing they're
- 10:37Speaker 5: facing the toughest decision you can have as an organization is,
- 10:42Speaker 5: you know, do you have to tear it all the
- 10:44Speaker 5: way down again? You know, because it didn't work when
- 10:48Speaker 5: you did it before. And that's that's really tough in
- 10:52Speaker 5: the marketplace with your fans, to make people believe you
- 10:56Speaker 5: got a plan. You know, that's all tough now to
- 10:59Speaker 5: make that call. But I think that's where they're at.
- 11:02Speaker 5: They really have to decide are you going to try
- 11:05Speaker 5: and sort of keep the skeleton of this group together
- 11:09Speaker 5: and do a little more. Are you going to have
- 11:11Speaker 5: to take it all the way down to the foundation again.
- 11:14Speaker 4: See that's why I like the route that the Broncos
- 11:17Speaker 4: chose to take in this division. Right, you're facing Mahomes,
- 11:21Speaker 4: You're facing a witch. You got Herbert, who's another great quarterback.
- 11:25Speaker 4: They built defense, They built defense, They said, this is
- 11:28Speaker 4: the way we're going to attack this. The Raiders don't
- 11:31Speaker 4: know what they're doing in that regard, not yet. They
- 11:33Speaker 4: got spy tech in there. They're making new moves. But
- 11:36Speaker 4: I think that's the only way to go here, because
- 11:37Speaker 4: you're not going to get a Mahomes handed to you.
- 11:39Speaker 6: Not many teams do.
- 11:41Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, victim. You guys have heard me say it.
- 11:43Speaker 5: If you're the other teams and your strategy and building is, oh,
- 11:48Speaker 5: we'll just go find a quarterback as good as he is,
- 11:51Speaker 5: that ain't a good strategy.
- 11:52Speaker 2: People.
- 11:53Speaker 5: You know what, once the other guys get a historical guy,
- 11:57Speaker 5: you just have to throw up your hands and say, uh,
- 12:00Speaker 5: they got a historical guy, much like when they had
- 12:04Speaker 5: l way here in Manning here. Uh, that's you just
- 12:08Speaker 5: gotta live with it instead of fight it. And I
- 12:11Speaker 5: watched teams fight the ocean. I watched the AFC East
- 12:16Speaker 5: for decades, say oh, we'll just get a quarterback you know,
- 12:19Speaker 5: close to Brady. No, you're not so just you move
- 12:23Speaker 5: on from that thought.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Do you think this will be a one score game
- 12:27Speaker 1: in the fourth quarter?
- 12:29Speaker 5: Well, you know it's hard to say no to that
- 12:32Speaker 5: with these Broncos. It's actually it's you know, it could
- 12:35Speaker 5: be a two score game. What were they down eleven
- 12:38Speaker 5: in one game? Down nineteen and the other. You know,
- 12:40Speaker 5: it's just yeah, you just I almost sort of expect
- 12:44Speaker 5: them to be behind by the fourth quarter. I know
- 12:46Speaker 5: this to see what what will happen.
- 12:48Speaker 1: It's gonna shock you.
- 12:49Speaker 2: I know this is gonna blow your mind.
- 12:52Speaker 1: And stop right there, What is Moser going to say?
- 12:54Speaker 5: Like, I'm just I'm just waiting with my anticipation, just excited.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Take go ahead.
- 13:01Speaker 2: The Broncos are going to smash them tonight, smash bash, smash,
- 13:07Speaker 2: trash and flash.
- 13:09Speaker 1: All of it bagg done.
- 13:13Speaker 5: I'm just glad they're rocking the throwbacks. Those new nies
- 13:17Speaker 5: are sweet. Look good. Jeff lag Well, now, usually I
- 13:20Speaker 5: usually don't get excited for the laundry, but I like
- 13:22Speaker 5: the I like the throwback.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Hey Jeffrey, Uh, I know that you're you're mostly x's
- 13:27Speaker 4: and o's and what's happening on the field. But yesterday
- 13:29Speaker 4: the Broncos announced that they have initiated plans for that
- 13:32Speaker 4: uh Burnham Yard district area and they actually I saw map.
- 13:37Speaker 2: What they're gonna do. Uh.
- 13:38Speaker 4: The eighth Avenue Viaduct looks like it's gonna get rerouted
- 13:42Speaker 4: or trashed, which is fine because that thing is old.
- 13:44Speaker 5: Uh.
- 13:45Speaker 6: But one thing I've noticed, is it coincidence that that
- 13:49Speaker 6: announcement comes just hours after the big vote to add
- 13:53Speaker 6: more revenue for city infrastructure or is that part of
- 13:56Speaker 6: the package.
- 13:57Speaker 5: I'm sure it all goes together somewhere. I don't know
- 14:00Speaker 5: how all the plugs plug in on that, but uh,
- 14:04Speaker 5: I think it's a harder plan to to accomplish if
- 14:08Speaker 5: that infrastructure funding isn't there. Yeah, I mean, because that's
- 14:13Speaker 5: always the thing. Yes, the Broncos are going to pay
- 14:16Speaker 5: for their stadium infrastructure stuff no matter what. Usually, no
- 14:23Speaker 5: matter what, if a team pays for its own stadium,
- 14:26Speaker 5: like so far, you know, the infrastructure things usually fall
- 14:32Speaker 5: to the city. The county where you know, whatever body
- 14:35Speaker 5: has oversight so that that funding is significant. It's nothing
- 14:40Speaker 5: to shake, you know, your finger at. But in these
- 14:44Speaker 5: times when funding is hard to come by for everything,
- 14:49Speaker 5: I think I think that's a big deal in the
- 14:50Speaker 5: process uh and moving it forward. And I think the
- 14:54Speaker 5: Broncos honestly are trying very hard to understand neighborhood concern.
- 15:00Speaker 5: You know, the people that live in the vicinity of
- 15:03Speaker 5: that may not all be one hundred percent excited. A
- 15:07Speaker 5: giant stadium entertainment district is going to be right, you know,
- 15:10Speaker 5: down the road. So there's always a ton of things
- 15:13Speaker 5: you've got to address. And I think they've been smart
- 15:16Speaker 5: in trying to get out front by years in this
- 15:20Speaker 5: I'd be Russian.
- 15:21Speaker 1: I turned my drive away into a parking lot.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Man, fifty bucks a pop. If you want to get
- 15:26Speaker 2: right here next to the stadium, I'd make some bread.
- 15:29Speaker 5: You would. You're an entrepreneur.
- 15:31Speaker 3: That's pet Hart uh Ley one last thing for you,
- 15:34Speaker 3: because you have a football mind that is much more
- 15:37Speaker 3: vast and better than mine. When I look at Dion
- 15:42Speaker 3: yesterday or a couple of days ago at his press
- 15:44Speaker 3: conference and he says, basically, I'm not telling you if
- 15:48Speaker 3: I'm making coaching changes. You have to figure that out
- 15:50Speaker 3: for yourself. Have you seen that before where there's a
- 15:54Speaker 3: team where no one knows really who's calling the plays
- 15:58Speaker 3: and he's not willing to announce who offensive coordinator is.
- 16:01Speaker 3: I mean, first of all, what's the purpose behind that?
- 16:03Speaker 3: And second of all, why be so coy about it?
- 16:09Speaker 5: You know sometimes well now Belichick did it for years.
- 16:12Speaker 5: I mean in the NFL, people would long time people
- 16:17Speaker 5: cover the Patriots would had all kinds of covert missions
- 16:21Speaker 5: to see who was talking into the headset, you know,
- 16:25Speaker 5: before plays, and he wouldn't. He often when John in
- 16:29Speaker 5: the years Josh McDaniels wasn't there, he often would not
- 16:33Speaker 5: acknowledge who was actually calling the plays on game day.
- 16:37Speaker 5: So that you know, this isn't like a rare thing.
- 16:40Speaker 5: Some people just choose to do it because they get
- 16:42Speaker 5: tired of answering questions about it. But it's fascinating to me.
- 16:49Speaker 5: And look, you know my you know, people know my
- 16:52Speaker 5: viewpoint of this as as the guy who asked questions,
- 16:55Speaker 5: So take it for what it's worth. But I hear
- 17:00Speaker 5: coaches for forty years now. I've listened to coaches talk
- 17:03Speaker 5: about distractions, and often coaches are the greatest ones that
- 17:08Speaker 5: creating distractions that they'll yell at somebody else for. And
- 17:13Speaker 5: that's what this looks like to me.
- 17:16Speaker 3: Jeff legwand ESPN dot Com to us every single week. OW,
- 17:18Speaker 3: we appreciate it, Leggy, thank.
- 17:19Speaker 5: You, thanks fellows. Let's se
