- 0:34Speaker 3: Jeff Legwald's appearance brought to you by the International Brotherhood
- 0:38Speaker 3: of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight. You start with
- 0:41Speaker 3: a job, you end with a career, LEGGI how you doing, man.
- 0:46Speaker 4: I'm great. How you got We're.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Doing excellent, Leggy.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Let's start with your latest FREESPN dot com about Marvin Mimes.
- 0:54Speaker 3: All right, this has been Andy and I have been
- 0:56Speaker 3: kicking this Mimes thing around for some time now as
- 1:00Speaker 3: the Broncos try to figure out how to maximize Marvin
- 1:05Speaker 3: Mims and how they're going to divvy up, as Sean
- 1:08Speaker 3: Payton called it, the touches. It's the competition for touches.
- 1:14Speaker 3: You pointed out in your piece last year that the
- 1:16Speaker 3: Broncos basically figured out how to get Marvin Mims involved
- 1:22Speaker 3: as soon as they started using him out of the backfield.
- 1:24Speaker 3: That was sort of what kind of broke the damn
- 1:27Speaker 3: of Oh, Marvin Mims is now an important part of
- 1:31Speaker 3: this offense as we start kind of year three of
- 1:35Speaker 3: Mems' career, year two of bo Nicks, year two of
- 1:38Speaker 3: Sean Payton actually having his system in place. Is it
- 1:43Speaker 3: gonna be another similar situation where like Sean is going
- 1:46Speaker 3: to have to almost like invent new roles, whether it
- 1:49Speaker 3: be for Mems or other guys to get them involved
- 1:52Speaker 3: in the offense. Because Leggy is you point it out
- 1:54Speaker 3: in your piece, it's kind of a lot of dudes
- 1:56Speaker 3: that are trying to eat right now.
- 1:58Speaker 5: I think that's the issue name, you know, is it
- 2:00Speaker 5: going to be you know, the committee approach or you know,
- 2:04Speaker 5: like a lot of teams go two primary receivers with
- 2:09Speaker 5: maybe a third receiver as sort of a two A.
- 2:14Speaker 5: But I mean, I'm consistently baffled by the Mims thing
- 2:18Speaker 5: because they they fully admit, Okay, he needs to touch
- 2:21Speaker 5: the ball more. And then what do you play in
- 2:24Speaker 5: the playoff game twenty nine snaps twenty eight snaps. I mean,
- 2:27Speaker 5: that's that's befuddling to me that in a playoff game. Uh,
- 2:33Speaker 5: with the stretch run he had, especially you know, you
- 2:37Speaker 5: got you can't look at that Bengal.
- 2:39Speaker 4: I know they lost, but he's really look at.
- 2:41Speaker 5: That Bengal game and say, how can this guy not
- 2:44Speaker 5: be on the field for seventy percent of the offensive snaps?
- 2:50Speaker 5: And and then he plays twenty i think twenty nine
- 2:54Speaker 5: snaps in the playoff game, and I, Uh, that's one
- 2:57Speaker 5: I just can't figure out now, you know. I talked
- 3:00Speaker 5: to Marvin for that piece that right at the end
- 3:03Speaker 5: of mini camp, and he's very optimistic and I think
- 3:07Speaker 5: he feels good about how they came through the offseason
- 3:11Speaker 5: and what he thinks the plan for him is. But
- 3:16Speaker 5: as you said, the move to running back, even to him,
- 3:20Speaker 5: was a big deal because he believes it showed the team, hey,
- 3:24Speaker 5: I'll do whatever you want me to do, just just
- 3:26Speaker 5: put me out there. And it also gave defenses a
- 3:32Speaker 5: little different look that nobody really had an answer for.
- 3:37Speaker 5: And I think they'd like to do a little more
- 3:39Speaker 5: off of that, you know, moving forward. I think it
- 3:42Speaker 5: intrigued Sean Payton enough to sort of say, Okay, what
- 3:47Speaker 5: is there beyond simply Mims in the backfield, you know,
- 3:50Speaker 5: in a regular play where he's the running back.
- 3:54Speaker 4: What else is there beyond that?
- 3:56Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 3:56Speaker 3: And it's and it's how many different mechanisms are there
- 3:59Speaker 3: to get him the ball, whether it be he in
- 4:01Speaker 3: the backfield or him lining up in the slot. Are
- 4:04Speaker 3: you gonna run that reverse kind of stuff to try
- 4:07Speaker 3: and get the ball in his hands? That jet sweep stuff.
- 4:10Speaker 3: It's I think Marvin Mims could be an effective bubble
- 4:13Speaker 3: screen type of player. Like, honestly, that was a lot
- 4:15Speaker 3: of his best plays. We're simply just catch and run
- 4:17Speaker 3: plays where he then went and made a big play.
- 4:20Speaker 3: He had one against the Chargers, he had won against
- 4:21Speaker 3: the Raiders where it was just like, okay, bon Nick's
- 4:24Speaker 3: point guard play, get the ball in the hands of
- 4:26Speaker 3: Marvin Mims and just sort of watch him create. And
- 4:29Speaker 3: it's what I think one of the tricky parts of
- 4:32Speaker 3: all of that, Leggie, is exactly to your point. You
- 4:34Speaker 3: look at that playoff game game plan and you're like,
- 4:36Speaker 3: why why did you get away from that? And it's
- 4:41Speaker 3: almost as though Sean Payton has to remember, oh, yeah,
- 4:46Speaker 3: I also have this card in the deck right now.
- 4:49Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that's the biggest thing. You know, Mims
- 4:52Speaker 5: even said when I talked to him. You know, as
- 4:54Speaker 5: a receiver, you can absolutely do everything right. You can
- 4:59Speaker 5: run the perfect brown, you can get the perfect leverage,
- 5:02Speaker 5: you can win your release, you can be in the
- 5:05Speaker 5: exact right spot and nothing happens.
- 5:08Speaker 4: If the ball doesn't come to you.
- 5:10Speaker 5: So I think he's really intent on showing the coaches,
- 5:15Speaker 5: at least in camp. Look, I'll be where you designed
- 5:19Speaker 5: it for me to be.
- 5:22Speaker 4: So that he'll do his part.
- 5:23Speaker 5: I just think, you know, for me that the wild
- 5:27Speaker 5: card is Sean Payton loved playing little Jordan Humphrey on
- 5:32Speaker 5: an awful lot of early downs. You know, he thought
- 5:35Speaker 5: Humphrey was a big, physical receiver who helped in the
- 5:39Speaker 5: run game, was a willing guy to you know, crack
- 5:43Speaker 5: back or chip you know, in a lot of defensive fronts,
- 5:48Speaker 5: and that was important to Sean. But those snaps are
- 5:51Speaker 5: up for grabs now, you know that that's sort.
- 5:54Speaker 4: Of the the area where any.
- 5:57Speaker 5: Of these guys, especially Mems, can get more time there.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Those snaps are available for someone to take and and
- 6:05Speaker 5: I think the person including Mims, who shows they can
- 6:11Speaker 5: play with physicality, that that they'll get those snaps.
- 6:14Speaker 4: And I think he can. You can't.
- 6:17Speaker 5: He can't be the kind of returner he is and
- 6:20Speaker 5: not be a physical player. That's that's a fearless position.
- 6:26Speaker 5: And and I think that's that's one thing that really
- 6:29Speaker 5: benefits Mims is he is fearless going for the ball,
- 6:33Speaker 5: getting the ball, you know, the first few steps with
- 6:36Speaker 5: the ball, and I don't I think that part has
- 6:39Speaker 5: been undervalued about him.
- 6:41Speaker 3: So I asked this question with a full knowledge that
- 6:43Speaker 3: injuries are certainly going to take their toll. That's why
- 6:45Speaker 3: you need depth in the NFL. But as you pointed out,
- 6:48Speaker 3: it was mostly it was Courtland Mims and Troy Franklin
- 6:52Speaker 3: as as the top three or as the basically as
- 6:55Speaker 3: the as the first offense three receiver set that we
- 6:59Speaker 3: saw during the OTAs this year. That doesn't include Devon Valley,
- 7:03Speaker 3: who was missing, and it doesn't include Pat Bryant, who
- 7:07Speaker 3: does have to play in order to be able to
- 7:11Speaker 3: help him develop as well. And you used a third
- 7:14Speaker 3: round pick on him because you like him and you
- 7:16Speaker 3: want the ball to be in his hands like it's
- 7:20Speaker 3: it's so funny because you look at the Broncos receiving
- 7:22Speaker 3: corp Leggy and it's like, Okay, there's not a there's
- 7:25Speaker 3: not a Justin Jefferson. I don't even know if there's
- 7:27Speaker 3: a Puka Nakua that is in there in that group.
- 7:31Speaker 3: But there is a lot of dudes that are good
- 7:33Speaker 3: NFL players that you want to try and get the
- 7:37Speaker 3: ball in the hands of. And that doesn't even mention Oh,
- 7:40Speaker 3: by the way, Evan Ingram.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Oh exactly.
- 7:43Speaker 5: And I think Ingram, you know, those may be some
- 7:45Speaker 5: of those little Jordan Humphrey snaps.
- 7:48Speaker 4: In a lot of ways, So we could end up
- 7:50Speaker 4: being Ingram.
- 7:51Speaker 5: H and he will line up at sort of quote
- 7:55Speaker 5: unquote wide receiver spots in the formation because that's just
- 7:58Speaker 5: his his body type and how he plays. But uh,
- 8:03Speaker 5: I think Sean, just from talking to him off to
- 8:06Speaker 5: the side a little bit a few times, I think
- 8:08Speaker 5: he feels much better about sort of the situational versatility
- 8:13Speaker 5: that they'll have with some of these guys. But I think,
- 8:17Speaker 5: you know, Angram's gonna get a big bump in opportunities
- 8:21Speaker 5: among the tight ends. So that's some of the receptions
- 8:25Speaker 5: that are available are going to him. But I think
- 8:28Speaker 5: the next guy who could carve out the inroads with
- 8:30Speaker 5: a good camp in a preseason is Mims, because even
- 8:35Speaker 5: Sean admits, you know, a lot of the holding back
- 8:38Speaker 5: of Mims hasn't been Mims's fault. You know, he goes
- 8:42Speaker 5: out there when they tell him that it's the coaches
- 8:45Speaker 5: have to find a way to keep him on the field.
- 8:48Speaker 5: And you know, I think he could be you know,
- 8:51Speaker 5: w R two in this offense. Now, what does that
- 8:53Speaker 5: mean in catches? I don't think we know yet, you know,
- 8:56Speaker 5: how much are they going to put the ball in
- 8:58Speaker 5: the air? How much will Inger eat of those of
- 9:02Speaker 5: those catches? But I think Mims, in my opinion, is
- 9:07Speaker 5: is what a lot of people would like as a
- 9:09Speaker 5: number two receiver, you know, in their in their offense.
- 9:13Speaker 4: And I think the Broncos should treat him that way.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Frankly Lake, I want to bounce this one off.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Ye.
- 9:17Speaker 3: I saw this in Pro Football Focus put out a
- 9:20Speaker 3: list today. It was top ten safety blanket receivers in
- 9:24Speaker 3: the NFL.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Some interesting numbers right here.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Bon Nicks last year target at Courtland Sutton thirty four
- 9:30Speaker 3: times when he was pressured. Last year thirty four targets
- 9:34Speaker 3: for Courtland under pressure Sutton nineteen of thirty four caught
- 9:40Speaker 3: nineteen of those targets, two hundred and eighty nine yards,
- 9:42Speaker 3: thirteen first down secured four of eight contested targets. This
- 9:46Speaker 3: gets into some good pff nerd stuff. I do like
- 9:49Speaker 3: this stuff, but basically making the overarching point that when
- 9:53Speaker 3: bow Knicks felt pressure as a rookie quarterback, he went
- 9:57Speaker 3: to his first target. In Courtland Sutton saw a lot
- 10:00Speaker 3: of those targets. I guess my question is is that
- 10:05Speaker 3: a positive thing?
- 10:07Speaker 1: Like?
- 10:08Speaker 3: Is that something that if you're Sean Payton, do you
- 10:11Speaker 3: want to address that with bo Nix and say, okay,
- 10:14Speaker 3: under pressure, we would like to see you sticking with
- 10:19Speaker 3: your progressions, spreading the ball out, or is that something
- 10:22Speaker 3: where you look at it and say, hey, we're lucky
- 10:24Speaker 3: enough to have that dude. We're lucky enough to have
- 10:26Speaker 3: that guy that can make those tough contested catches right
- 10:28Speaker 3: there that our quarterback depends on, and that's actually a
- 10:32Speaker 3: positive for our offense.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Mostly.
- 10:35Speaker 5: The second thing, ye, Nate, and you know I've put
- 10:38Speaker 5: in a story or too. Courtland Sutton was by far
- 10:42Speaker 5: the Broncos leader and what they call tight window targets.
- 10:46Speaker 5: Where did the quarterback throw it in the narrowest of
- 10:50Speaker 5: windows to you. And Sutton was way out in front
- 10:55Speaker 5: of the Bronco regulars on offense because bone Knicks trusts
- 11:01Speaker 5: Courtland Sutton to be right where he should be, and
- 11:06Speaker 5: that if bone Nicks didn't quite get the ball to
- 11:09Speaker 5: the right spot. And this is important to a quarterback,
- 11:12Speaker 5: and they will all tell you how important it is
- 11:15Speaker 5: when asked. But they want the receivers who will fight
- 11:20Speaker 5: for the ball, like, don't give me that cheap interception
- 11:24Speaker 5: because you didn't get in there and scrap for it.
- 11:27Speaker 5: Nothing irritates a quarterback more than a pick because the
- 11:32Speaker 5: receiver didn't go in there and get it. And you know,
- 11:36Speaker 5: because that it's all that the windows are so tight
- 11:40Speaker 5: in the NFL that a quarterback can't possibly hit them
- 11:45Speaker 5: all the time. So a receiver like Courtland is every
- 11:50Speaker 5: single great quarterback has had one guy where they think,
- 11:54Speaker 5: all right, the first three reads are a little muddy,
- 11:58Speaker 5: I'm going here with the all because he'll give me
- 12:01Speaker 5: a chance. And and Sutton is that guy for bo Nicks,
- 12:04Speaker 5: and I think they're perfectly okay with that right now.
- 12:07Speaker 3: All right, Leggy, well done, by the way, Matt Moore
- 12:09Speaker 3: noted Chiefs fan, is, do you have any Chiefs related
- 12:12Speaker 3: questions you want to hit leg with here? No, I
- 12:13Speaker 3: think I'm gonna you feel you feel good about your
- 12:16Speaker 3: organization right now this conversation, Leggy Man, good stuff, as always.
- 12:21Speaker 1: We appreciate it, dude.
- 12:23Speaker 4: I might ask some NBA stuff I want to ask Matt.
- 12:26Speaker 4: I mean we're out of time or what?
- 12:28Speaker 1: Hey?
- 12:28Speaker 3: Fire away because uh, Leggy he Jonas Valentunis wants to
- 12:32Speaker 3: go with He wants to go play with former ALIGNI
- 12:35Speaker 3: guy Kendrick Nunn over in Greece.
- 12:38Speaker 1: We're always here for the ALIGNI ties, right man.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Yeah, No, I.
- 12:42Speaker 5: Could see where you'd pick former ALIGNE over the Joker,
- 12:45Speaker 5: but I don't know.
- 12:49Speaker 1: It's a chance to play with Kendrick Nunn. By the way,
- 12:52Speaker 1: Wancho's on that team as well. Uh, Leggy Man, good stuff.
- 12:55Speaker 1: We appreciate it, dude.
- 12:57Speaker 4: All right, Bellas, thank you,
