- 18:17Speaker 16: You never really know what someone else is carrying. That barista,
- 18:21Speaker 16: the person sitting next to you, a colleague, even the
- 18:24Speaker 16: stranger you pass on the street. They could be having
- 18:27Speaker 16: a day you know nothing about. So give a compliment,
- 18:31Speaker 16: check in on someone, hold the door, smile, and don't
- 18:34Speaker 16: forget to be kind to yourself too.
- 18:37Speaker 15: Kindness costs nothing, but it completely can change someone's day.
- 18:41Speaker 15: So let's sprinkle a little more of it around this week.
- 18:45Speaker 15: The world could always use more good energy. You've got this.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Thank you so much, Meera.
- 18:50Speaker 7: Meera always gets your week going in the right direction
- 18:54Speaker 7: with that weekly report called the Mindful Sass Minute. And
- 18:57Speaker 7: ladies and gentlemen, going from one lovely lady to another one.
- 19:01Speaker 7: Now let's invite in Deanne Penn from the United Nations
- 19:06Speaker 7: News Department.
- 19:07Speaker 1: How are you, Deanne?
- 19:08Speaker 17: This is UN News Today with me, Deanne Penn. The headlines.
- 19:13Speaker 17: Escalating fighting in Yemen has displaced 46,000 people and numbers
- 19:18Speaker 17: are expected to rise, the International Organization for Migration, IOM, reports.
- 19:25Speaker 17: The UN Secretary General pays tribute to 9-11 victims, survivors
- 19:30Speaker 17: and first responders, marking 25 years since the world-changing terrorist
- 19:34Speaker 17: attacks on the United States. And a new report examines
- 19:39Speaker 17: how terrorist propaganda is evolving beyond messaging to increasingly target
- 19:44Speaker 17: children and young people. Recent Controversy clashes in Yemen have
- 19:51Speaker 17: displaced at least 46,000 people and the number is alarmingly
- 19:56Speaker 17: rising by the hour, the International Organization for Migration, IOM,
- 20:01Speaker 17: said on Friday. The development follows the escalation last week
- 20:06Speaker 17: between Houthi rebels, and Saudi-backed Yemeni forces. Though the sides
- 20:11Speaker 17: have been at war for more than a decade, the
- 20:13Speaker 17: fighting has disrupted a fragile calm that has existed since 2022.
- 20:18Speaker 17: IOM said the displacement figure spans the West Coast and
- 20:22Speaker 17: Taiz governorates as of Thursday, while large numbers of people
- 20:26Speaker 17: were reportedly seen leaving Mocha City overnight. New arrivals are
- 20:31Speaker 17: being reported in Laj and Aden governorates, while people reportedly
- 20:36Speaker 17: are also moving north towards Ib. Entire villages in three
- 20:41Speaker 17: districts in Taiz Governorate are reported to have emptied out
- 20:44Speaker 17: as fighting moved closer to populated areas. IOM Chief Amy
- 20:49Speaker 17: Pope warned that as fighting spreads, reaching people with life-saving
- 20:54Speaker 17: assistance is becoming harder. She urged all parties to protect
- 20:58Speaker 17: civilians and aid workers and to safeguard humanitarian assets on
- 21:03Speaker 17: the ground. Exactly 25 years ago today, the heinous terrorist
- 21:07Speaker 17: attacks of 11 September 2001 against the United States claimed
- 21:13Speaker 17: thousands of lives and represented an assault on humanity itself,
- 21:17Speaker 17: the UN Secretary General said in a statement marking the anniversary.
- 21:22Speaker 17: Antonio Guterres paid tribute to the victims, survivors and first
- 21:26Speaker 17: responders who rushed to Ground Zero, the World Trade Center's
- 21:30Speaker 17: Twin Towers in New York City. He said that as
- 21:33Speaker 17: we mark this somber occasion on 11 September, we remember
- 21:37Speaker 17: the nearly 3,000 victims from the United States and more
- 21:41Speaker 17: than 90 countries and stand with their families and loved ones.
- 21:46Speaker 17: He added that the UN continues to stand in solidarity
- 21:50Speaker 17: with the people of New York City, the US, and
- 21:53Speaker 17: with all those whose lives were affected by the attacks.
- 21:57Speaker 17: Terrorist groups are recruiting, raising money, and even planning operations
- 22:02Speaker 17: through propaganda that is now embedded in every stage of
- 22:06Speaker 17: their work. The finding comes in a new report that
- 22:09Speaker 17: examines how terrorist propaganda has expanded beyond messaging, issued by
- 22:15Speaker 17: the CTED, that's the Secretariat of the UN Security Council
- 22:19Speaker 17: Counterterrorism Committee. It identifies several emerging trends, including use of
- 22:24Speaker 17: artificial intelligence, as well as exploitation of gaming platforms and
- 22:29Speaker 17: alternative online spaces such as Discord, Twitch, and Stream. One
- 22:35Speaker 17: increasingly alarming trend is that children and young people are
- 22:39Speaker 17: increasingly being targeted. The report warns that as terrorists adopt
- 22:44Speaker 17: their propaganda strategies, the international community is struggling to keep
- 22:48Speaker 17: pace because policy responses and implementation have longer legislative and
- 22:54Speaker 17: operational timelines. UN News.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Thank you so much for that, Deanne.
- 23:01Speaker 7: And Deanne and the team appear on the bridge every
- 23:04Speaker 7: week as part of Ruckus Avenue Radio's partnership with the
- 23:08Speaker 7: United Nations News Department. Thank you very much, their team.
- 23:13Speaker 7: Let's bring in this song. It's called Tare.
- 23:16Speaker 1: One of our favorites. It's by Farrakh.
- 23:19Speaker 10: Our song is a little older than Thokras.
- 23:26Speaker 5: Who has only seen love?
- 23:34Speaker 18: He is the bridegroom of God. Our thokras have some
- 23:41Speaker 18: old special ties. Our thokras have some old special ties.
- 23:47Speaker 18: The one who has only seen love, he is the
- 23:51Speaker 18: bridegroom of God. The one who has only seen love,
- 23:55Speaker 18: he is the bridegroom of God. Now don't ask about
- 23:59Speaker 18: the condition of the heart.
- 24:01Speaker 19: It seems like fear while telling. Is khali kar ko
- 24:05Speaker 19: na looto Yeh usdil sar patakta hai Wa ghar chhoota
- 24:10Speaker 19: hai Jabse kambakhat koi aasrana hai Yeh kaag zir kaapta
- 24:15Speaker 19: Jabhug hoti dil ke ghaav taza hai.
- 24:20Speaker 20: Ke labz kuch aise hai Gawaya is kadar ke Gawar
- 24:24Speaker 20: farmaayega Gawaya is kadar ke Paane ko ab kuch bachana
- 24:30Speaker 20: hai Parinda kaith pinjre mein Parinda kaid pinjare mein usse
- 24:36Speaker 20: dar aasma ka.
- 24:38Speaker 18: Hai Gawaya is kadar ke paane ko ab kuch bachana
- 24:43Speaker 18: hai Parinda kaid pinjare mein usse.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Dar aasma ka hai.
- 24:53Speaker 12: Parinda kaid pinjare mein.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Usse dar aasma ka hai.
- 24:58Speaker 19: Jo bhikhara toot ke phir wo samete na simat tha hai.
- 25:04Speaker 19: Hai parthe is kadar dil pe tarashe na nikharta hai.
- 25:08Speaker 19: Hala tu se liya jab bair tohar daav hara mein.
- 25:13Speaker 19: Ye kandhe chuk rahe hain umido ka bhaar zada hai.

- 27:55Speaker 7: you know, dating back some years now. And so for
- 27:59Speaker 7: us to watch this story and to have you on
- 28:00Speaker 7: the air here is quite a treat.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Thank you for making time for us this morning.
- 28:04Speaker 5: Oh, thank you for having me.
- 28:08Speaker 7: Let's get into this background story of yours, which I
- 28:11Speaker 7: think is fascinating.
- 28:13Speaker 1: You are 16 years old.
- 28:15Speaker 7: You make that big flight going from Australia to London.
- 28:20Speaker 7: And then very shortly thereafter, you accomplish something that I
- 28:24Speaker 7: think people work a whole lifetime for, which is to
- 28:28Speaker 7: be put on BBC's Future Sounds list. And now you're
- 28:34Speaker 7: thrust into the scene. Take us back to that moment.
- 28:36Speaker 7: Take us back to what I would imagine to be
- 28:39Speaker 7: a very formative time in your career.
- 28:43Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I was very young, but I think,
- 28:45Speaker 5: you know, with the help of my mom and her, like,
- 28:49Speaker 5: she was very inspiring. She was like, you know what?
- 28:52Speaker 5: Because I wanted to finish school, like, in Australia, but
- 28:55Speaker 5: I think she was like, you know what? I think
- 28:58Speaker 5: you're singing career matters more. And, yeah, we made that
- 29:02Speaker 5: big move. It was a lot, but, yeah, it was
- 29:04Speaker 5: a big risk. But, you know, it was an amazing
- 29:08Speaker 5: opportunity for me to come to London. And, yeah, like,
- 29:11Speaker 5: it was crazy to think it's, It's been a long time,
- 29:14Speaker 5: but yeah, it was amazing.
- 29:18Speaker 7: The song Dear Mama is about your mama and how
- 29:22Speaker 7: she helped you with, you know, just everything in your life, right?
- 29:26Speaker 7: What does she say to you? You're making this move
- 29:29Speaker 7: and you're in London now. You're probably making your first
- 29:32Speaker 7: night of sleep, you know, making that trip from Australia.
- 29:35Speaker 7: What's the advice she's giving you, you know, other than
- 29:38Speaker 7: giving you the faith to keep moving forward?
- 29:39Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 29:41Speaker 5: I think since a young age my mom has always
- 29:43Speaker 5: been like a mama job to me like she's always
- 29:46Speaker 5: been you know helping me behind the scenes like singing
- 29:49Speaker 5: competitions or anything like that and You know, she sacrificed
- 29:53Speaker 5: a lot for me, like her time out of work and,
- 29:56Speaker 5: you know, driving me to Sydney because I'm from a
- 29:58Speaker 5: smaller town. And at that time, like, I would, you know,
- 30:01Speaker 5: go to Sydney, like, two-hour drive for singing lessons. And,
- 30:05Speaker 5: you know, she'd cut work. I'd leave school early. And
- 30:08Speaker 5: she put that time and dedication in. And I think
- 30:11Speaker 5: when things started getting serious, you know... I was, like
- 30:15Speaker 5: I said, I was very, you know, determined to finish
- 30:18Speaker 5: school and, you know, stay with my friends back home
- 30:20Speaker 5: and choose that comfortability. But she gave me some wise
- 30:24Speaker 5: words and she said, look, Selena, like, you wanted this
- 30:28Speaker 5: your whole life. I feel like there's an opportunity there
- 30:31Speaker 5: and you need to take it. And who can wait?
- 30:33Speaker 5: You know, you're 16. So, yeah. And I think since
- 30:37Speaker 5: I was six years old, she's always just been a
- 30:39Speaker 5: mumma just amazing. She knows I've been singing since I
- 30:41Speaker 5: was young and it just felt right at the time
- 30:44Speaker 5: and it's Yeah, like, Dear Mama is definitely a special song.
- 30:48Speaker 5: And when she heard it, she cried. She cried a lot.
- 30:52Speaker 5: I think any mom would. Oh, I bet.
- 30:54Speaker 1: It's a beautiful song.
- 30:56Speaker 7: And the amount of emotion, of course, that you pour
- 30:59Speaker 7: into that song is one thing. But just even, you know,
- 31:02Speaker 7: to make an ode to somebody so special to you
- 31:05Speaker 7: in terms of your personal life and to materialize it
- 31:07Speaker 7: and then play it for them.
- 31:08Speaker 1: I mean, what a moving moment that must have been
- 31:10Speaker 1: for Mama right there. That's really awesome.
- 31:12Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:13Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 31:13Speaker 5: And you know, it's so funny. We had to keep
- 31:15Speaker 5: a surprise from her. She didn't know. And then when
- 31:18Speaker 5: we had like a release party, that's when I surprised
- 31:21Speaker 5: her with the song. She had no idea that we
- 31:23Speaker 5: were working on it.
- 31:24Speaker 7: How are you going to keep Mama Dura away from
- 31:27Speaker 7: the song? That's pretty impressive. You know, it was hard.
- 31:32Speaker 5: It was very hard, but we, we, we were like,
- 31:34Speaker 5: it was a good surprise.
- 31:37Speaker 1: So let's talk about chapter two. It's a brand new project.
- 31:41Speaker 1: You just put it out on August 28th.
- 31:45Speaker 7: You know, when I look at this project, I feel
- 31:47Speaker 7: like it's a coming of age project. You have been
- 31:51Speaker 7: establishing your sound out there in a very interesting space
- 31:54Speaker 7: of probably being a little bit more in the youthful
- 31:57Speaker 7: pop kind of sound. And this one, I felt like
- 32:00Speaker 7: really took that step forward, not only from an individual level,
- 32:04Speaker 7: but from a creative level.
- 32:05Speaker 1: I feel like this was another layer of Selena that
- 32:08Speaker 1: we're getting to see. Was that intentional?
- 32:13Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 32:13Speaker 5: I mean, I think we called it chapter two for
- 32:15Speaker 5: a reason. You know what I mean? Like, it's kind
- 32:17Speaker 5: of like he saw chapter one of my life and,
- 32:20Speaker 5: you know, it's still, um, I feel like the new
- 32:23Speaker 5: music in chapter two is just more about me. I
- 32:26Speaker 5: feel like, the people that have been following me for
- 32:28Speaker 5: so long, since I was 16, they've never really seen
- 32:32Speaker 5: the real Selena and the journey that I've had. And
- 32:35Speaker 5: I feel like in chapter two, we're talking about that.
- 32:38Speaker 5: We're talking about, you know, moving from a young age,
- 32:41Speaker 5: from Sydney to London to pursue a career and like,
- 32:44Speaker 5: you know, all the sacrifices that come with that, all
- 32:46Speaker 5: the ups and downs, the struggles, and then just personal
- 32:49Speaker 5: stuff to me, really. Like, I feel like this is
- 32:52Speaker 5: my first, project where I've been a bit more vulnerable
- 32:55Speaker 5: and a bit more emotional and like my storytelling so
- 33:00Speaker 5: yeah I mean it's very special to me because yeah
- 33:02Speaker 5: like I said no one's.
- 33:03Speaker 7: Really seen that side yeah you you mentioned that that
- 33:06Speaker 7: this was really the first time that you've let people
- 33:08Speaker 7: into your world and it was a it was a
- 33:11Speaker 7: phrase that kind of stuck with me and and my
- 33:13Speaker 7: thought was it's one thing to say you all I'm
- 33:16Speaker 7: talking more about my life but what I took away
- 33:19Speaker 7: from that at that moment was I think that was
- 33:21Speaker 7: probably a nod towards you and your involvement in the
- 33:25Speaker 7: process of the music that you're making. Is that also
- 33:29Speaker 7: part of what you mean by, Hey, this is, I'm
- 33:31Speaker 7: letting people into my world more because they're seeing more
- 33:34Speaker 7: of your actual creative input in this.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:38Speaker 22: I mean, I feel like with this project as well,
- 33:41Speaker 22: we had so many live instruments and we really took
- 33:45Speaker 22: the time.
- 33:45Speaker 5: Like it's only a five song AP, but we took
- 33:48Speaker 5: the time. Like it was, um, yeah, it was a process,
- 33:51Speaker 5: but yeah, I feel like it was important that we
- 33:55Speaker 5: got it right. And also like with the songwriting, when
- 33:58Speaker 5: I was in the studio, we really just sat down like,
- 34:02Speaker 5: what is, what is my story? Like, what can we
- 34:04Speaker 5: talk about? And, um, yeah, I mean, I think I
- 34:08Speaker 5: also learned stuff about myself during the process as well. Like, um, yeah. And,
- 34:14Speaker 5: and just, you know, being true to myself and saying
- 34:17Speaker 5: yes and no to things and just being a little
- 34:19Speaker 5: bit bossy, but like, it was all, it was all like,
- 34:21Speaker 5: you know, it was an amazing, we had an amazing
- 34:23Speaker 5: team as well that was involved. Um, but yeah, I,
- 34:26Speaker 5: I definitely feel like it's a different Selena. You know
- 34:29Speaker 5: what I mean?
- 34:29Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 34:30Speaker 7: Selena, I don't know if you've ever done this before,
- 34:32Speaker 7: but whenever I, uh, whenever I see an album or
- 34:35Speaker 7: an EP, I always go through the track lists and
- 34:39Speaker 7: I'll look at the song lists and I'll get a
- 34:41Speaker 7: sense of, You know, the approach from the individual perspective,
- 34:44Speaker 7: and obviously you can't tell entirely because song titles can
- 34:47Speaker 7: be pretty, you know, layered. But when I went through
- 34:51Speaker 7: the song and track list of this EP, the titles
- 34:55Speaker 7: like Another Life, I Made This Song For You, Center
- 35:00Speaker 7: of Peace, which we'll get to in a second here.
- 35:02Speaker 7: These seem like pretty strong titles that have a lot
- 35:06Speaker 7: of gravity to them, if you will. Is that what
- 35:11Speaker 7: you're talking about? Hey, I'm revealing my own story here.
- 35:15Speaker 7: Being vulnerable is a word that you use, but I'm
- 35:17Speaker 7: going to take that word from you and say, what
- 35:19Speaker 7: is that vulnerability? What is it that you specifically let
- 35:22Speaker 7: into the world here in this project?
- 35:25Speaker 5: You know what? It wasn't intentional. I think it just
- 35:28Speaker 5: ended up being.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Which is interesting.
- 35:32Speaker 5: Yeah, it wasn't like, you know, we wanted people to
- 35:35Speaker 5: look at it and be like, oh, whoa. You know,
- 35:37Speaker 5: I think we knew the subjects we wanted to talk
- 35:40Speaker 5: about and each song has a different story. And I
- 35:44Speaker 5: can guarantee you, like, if someone looks at that track
- 35:47Speaker 5: list or if someone looks, like, you know, here's the songs,
- 35:50Speaker 5: I'm sure they can relate to one song. Like, you know,
- 35:52Speaker 5: you've got a song called Dear Mama and it's kind
- 35:55Speaker 5: of like, but then, you know, you've got a song
- 35:57Speaker 5: I made this song for you or 24 Hours Away. Like,
- 35:59Speaker 5: it's also very personal to me, but Yeah, I guess
- 36:03Speaker 5: it was an intentional, but, you know, looking at it now, like,
- 36:06Speaker 5: I definitely feel like anyone that looks at the track
- 36:09Speaker 5: list could be like, oh, maybe this song's for me.
- 36:12Speaker 5: But I kind of like that. You know, even when I, like,
- 36:14Speaker 5: go through an album or an EP, I'm always like, ooh, like,
- 36:18Speaker 5: what title, like, sounds really interesting. So, yeah, I mean,
- 36:24Speaker 5: there wasn't any intention, but, yeah.
- 36:26Speaker 7: I think that's even better. You know, you're just moving with...
- 36:31Speaker 7: the waves of this music industry. And let's turn our
- 36:34Speaker 7: attention to this awesome collaboration. Sonu Nagam, a legend, right?
- 36:41Speaker 7: I think that's very safe to say from the perspective
- 36:43Speaker 7: of the impact that he has made. But one thing
- 36:46Speaker 7: that I, I've got to know Sonu Paji through the
- 36:49Speaker 7: years as well. One thing I think that a lot
- 36:51Speaker 7: of people don't quite know about him, and I wanted
- 36:54Speaker 7: to see if you can touch on this as well,
- 36:56Speaker 7: is just how open-minded he is and just how adventurous
- 36:59Speaker 7: he is with his approach to music. You would think
- 37:02Speaker 7: that he's only doing one kind of thing out there.
- 37:05Speaker 7: But what I got to learn is like all the
- 37:07Speaker 7: music that he's recorded in the past that a people
- 37:09Speaker 7: haven't heard, but just all the different collaborative stuff that
- 37:12Speaker 7: he has tried. And so when I saw this collaboration
- 37:15Speaker 7: between you and him, I, first.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Of all, socially, I was like, that's interesting. I wonder
- 37:21Speaker 1: how that happened.
- 37:21Speaker 7: But then secondly, on top of that, I was like,
- 37:24Speaker 7: I'm not surprised. This is something that is right up
- 37:26Speaker 7: the alley in terms of how he approaches music. Tell
- 37:29Speaker 7: me what that experience was like for you.
- 37:34Speaker 5: Well, as you know, I think everyone has listened to
- 37:38Speaker 5: the legends growing up, like, you know, and for me, when, well,
- 37:44Speaker 5: Center of Peace took about 18 months to finish, but
- 37:50Speaker 5: we were at a stage where it was just me,
- 37:52Speaker 5: and I felt like, you know, we need something more
- 37:56Speaker 5: to this song. And obviously, you know, I'm half Indian.
- 37:59Speaker 5: I was like, maybe we should do something interesting. And, um, yeah,
- 38:04Speaker 5: like obviously having him on the song, it's just such
- 38:07Speaker 5: an honor, but what he does to the song is
- 38:10Speaker 5: just more interesting. Like it's like he approached the song with,
- 38:12Speaker 5: he just uplifted the song so much. Like it, it
- 38:15Speaker 5: sounds from what it was to what it is now.
- 38:17Speaker 22: Honestly, he, yeah, he uplifted it so much.
- 38:23Speaker 5: And, um, And even just his voice, like, his tone,
- 38:27Speaker 5: the way he does the runs and everything, like, just
- 38:31Speaker 5: brought something to it. And everyone's messaged me and been like,
- 38:34Speaker 5: this is so, I feel like he just suits the
- 38:36Speaker 5: song so much. And especially with the meaning of the
- 38:39Speaker 5: song as well. Like, I think he really liked that. And, yeah, like,
- 38:43Speaker 5: he just brought something else to the song. But, honestly,
- 38:46Speaker 5: it's such an honor to have him on there. And, yeah,
- 38:49Speaker 5: I'm so glad it worked out, honestly. Because, yeah, I
- 38:52Speaker 5: can't think of anyone else better.
- 38:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:55Speaker 18: Yeah.
- 38:56Speaker 7: I don't know too many people walking around out there
- 38:58Speaker 7: saying they have a track with Sona Nagama legend like
- 39:00Speaker 7: that for sure.
- 39:00Speaker 1: That's incredible. Yeah.
- 39:04Speaker 7: And, and here you are, you're, you're, you're, you have
- 39:07Speaker 7: this song with him on this EP. As you're putting
- 39:10Speaker 7: this EP out there, you're probably feeling to yourself, you've
- 39:13Speaker 7: covered the bases.
- 39:15Speaker 1: You've done really well.
- 39:16Speaker 7: And as I went through the EP as well, it
- 39:18Speaker 7: came out on the 28th of August. And by the way,
- 39:21Speaker 7: right after this interview, we'll play the song Center of Peace.
- 39:24Speaker 7: But just looking and listening to this song itself, I
- 39:29Speaker 7: just love the chemistry between the two of you guys.
- 39:31Speaker 7: I know that this song started out in a different
- 39:34Speaker 7: place to how it ended up being. And because of
- 39:36Speaker 7: the collaboration, I think it just took another layer. at
- 39:39Speaker 7: another level up. Tell me about the process of this song,
- 39:43Speaker 7: because it started out about something, you know, that was
- 39:45Speaker 7: obviously directly with about the relationship with God that you have.
- 39:49Speaker 7: And here it is that now this comes in. Tell
- 39:53Speaker 7: me about the experience of the actual song itself, the evolution,
- 39:56Speaker 7: because as you mentioned, it took 18 months.
- 39:58Speaker 1: There's a story there.
- 39:59Speaker 5: Yeah. Well, we first started this song in Johannesburg in
- 40:03Speaker 5: South Africa and it was a really rainy day. It
- 40:07Speaker 5: was like we had a couple of us just sitting
- 40:09Speaker 5: around and we started playing some chords, some piano chords.
- 40:13Speaker 5: And I feel like everyone in that room at that moment,
- 40:17Speaker 5: we were like, let's like try something different. that we
- 40:21Speaker 5: felt like that has purpose, you know, and we all thought, oh,
- 40:23Speaker 5: let's write about something about God and, you know, finding
- 40:26Speaker 5: that peace. And when I tell you that song was
- 40:29Speaker 5: written so quickly, it was written like, I don't know,
- 40:33Speaker 5: we all just clubbed on it really quickly and we
- 40:35Speaker 5: all could relate to it. And then it was just
- 40:38Speaker 5: piano chords with some vocals and we left it there
- 40:41Speaker 5: for a little bit, but we knew we'd, get back
- 40:44Speaker 5: to it and then we had people from I think
- 40:47Speaker 5: all around the world that had worked on that song
- 40:49Speaker 5: as well like the production and then when we realised
- 40:51Speaker 5: we wanted to do some like we wanted to have
- 40:53Speaker 5: someone on it and we wanted to like do something
- 40:55Speaker 5: different on it we said why don't we do something
- 40:58Speaker 5: Indian influenced and have some Indian instruments as well, like
- 41:03Speaker 5: the Bensuri and the Serangi, like, we recorded that in Mumbai, India,
- 41:08Speaker 5: so I went there, recorded the final vocals in Mumbai, okay,
- 41:12Speaker 5: because I feel like it was important, like, you need
- 41:15Speaker 5: to touch base with where you're originally from, and I
- 41:17Speaker 5: felt like being in that moment, I just, yeah, I
- 41:20Speaker 5: just took all that energy from the Mumbai, you know,
- 41:24Speaker 5: the chaos of Mumbai, and then found that piece, and just, yeah,
- 41:28Speaker 5: and just um, did the final vocals and then we
- 41:31Speaker 5: sent it to, um, and yeah, and he loved it. And, um,
- 41:37Speaker 5: then he did his part. And when I heard his part,
- 41:39Speaker 5: I literally wanted to cry. Like it's his runs, like the,
- 41:43Speaker 5: you know what I mean?
- 41:44Speaker 1: His tone and his voice too. It's just so perfect
- 41:46Speaker 1: for the song. It's like made for it really is.
- 41:48Speaker 5: It's like childhood as well. It's like, reminds me of like,
- 41:51Speaker 5: as a kid, I'm like, Oh my God, I can't
- 41:53Speaker 5: believe this is happening. You know?
- 41:56Speaker 7: Um, By the way, I'm with Selena Sharma. She's been
- 42:01Speaker 7: so gracious here on a Monday morning with us spending
- 42:03Speaker 7: this time.
- 42:03Speaker 1: Thank you, Selena. I just got another question or two
- 42:05Speaker 1: before we let you go.
- 42:06Speaker 7: I know we've kept you here for a while, but
- 42:09Speaker 7: your collaboration with Larry Jackson at Gamma here, it's a
- 42:13Speaker 7: very interesting company. Larry's approach to music has always been
- 42:18Speaker 7: different and to me has been always at the front
- 42:21Speaker 7: end of the industry when it comes to a thought
- 42:24Speaker 7: leader and just the breadth of work that he has done.
- 42:28Speaker 7: this project to me seems like a very international project.
- 42:32Speaker 1: Just overall.
- 42:32Speaker 7: The sense of how I get from you, the production
- 42:35Speaker 7: was pretty much a global effort. You mentioned that you
- 42:39Speaker 7: were in Johannesburg writing the chords to the song, and
- 42:43Speaker 7: then you ended up recording in Mumbai, and you're working
- 42:45Speaker 7: with a company out here. Is this the new music industry?
- 42:51Speaker 7: And I know that you're in a great environment for
- 42:54Speaker 7: that with Larry Jackson, but Selena, you, to me, come
- 42:57Speaker 7: across as someone that represents the future of the business,
- 43:00Speaker 7: which is it has no borders, it has no boundaries,
- 43:03Speaker 7: and you are a child of the world doing what
- 43:06Speaker 7: you're doing.
- 43:09Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 43:09Speaker 5: I mean, I feel like I'm quite international myself.
- 43:14Speaker 1: Right.
- 43:14Speaker 5: It's like, you know, moving from here to there, and
- 43:16Speaker 5: I think it's super important, you know.
- 43:18Speaker 1: Like, I.
- 43:21Speaker 5: it's my dream. It's my dream to be just a
- 43:23Speaker 5: global superstar and, and, and to have, and just like
- 43:26Speaker 5: touch base in every country. And, um, and I think,
- 43:29Speaker 5: you know, I don't know. I just feel like coming
- 43:33Speaker 5: from Australia, then moving to London and even just being
- 43:36Speaker 5: in America too, like, um, in South Africa, like everywhere
- 43:40Speaker 5: in the world. And even just carrying that Indian heritage
- 43:43Speaker 5: to me and putting that through my song. Um, I
- 43:46Speaker 5: think it's, it's, it's important, but I've always, been very international.
- 43:50Speaker 5: Like even my mom, she's Italian and Maltese.
- 43:53Speaker 17: Right.
- 43:53Speaker 5: So I'm quite a mixture there. And I feel like,
- 43:56Speaker 5: you know, I just try and, and, um, put that
- 43:59Speaker 5: out there as much as I can. Um, but yeah,
- 44:02Speaker 5: I feel like the music industry is changing. Like I
- 44:05Speaker 5: think everyone, you know, I think even the Indian, um,
- 44:09Speaker 5: like Bollywood and all that, like a lot from the
- 44:13Speaker 5: Western world, I'm getting to know that as well. So yeah,
- 44:16Speaker 5: I think it's just growing every day.
- 44:18Speaker 1: Incredible. All right. I have one last question for you.
- 44:21Speaker 7: It's something that I like to ask my guests and
- 44:25Speaker 7: it comes from a place of addressing. Yeah, it comes
- 44:29Speaker 7: from a place from addressing. What is the advice that
- 44:33Speaker 7: you would give a young Selena? You know, there's probably
- 44:36Speaker 7: a young girl out there right now that looks at
- 44:38Speaker 7: you and says, I want to be like Selena Sharma.
- 44:41Speaker 1: What's the advice you give her?
- 44:47Speaker 5: What's the advice?
- 44:48Speaker 1: Yeah, like, give us your thoughts there.
- 44:51Speaker 5: My advice is that, yeah, okay, this is personal, but,
- 44:56Speaker 5: you know, I think this is just not about career,
- 45:00Speaker 5: but just in life in general. I feel like when
- 45:03Speaker 5: you do feel really low and you're struggling and you
- 45:06Speaker 5: feel like, You're not going to get any better. You're
- 45:08Speaker 5: really just having those down days. Trust me, it will
- 45:11Speaker 5: get better. I think just try and stay positive, you know,
- 45:16Speaker 5: as much as you can. And also career-wise, be consistent.
- 45:21Speaker 5: You're going to see results if you just keep believing
- 45:23Speaker 5: in yourself. Don't give up. Just keep going. And put
- 45:28Speaker 5: that work in, you know, make those sacrifices like I did. And, yeah,
- 45:34Speaker 5: I think that will get you there. where you want
- 45:36Speaker 5: to go in life. Um, but yeah, that's my advice.
- 45:43Speaker 1: That is beautiful. You know, the, the reassurance is so important, right?
- 45:47Speaker 1: Knowing that you, you just stick with it.
- 45:49Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 45:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:51Speaker 7: Selena, first of all, thank you so much for joining
- 45:54Speaker 7: us today here on The Bridge. You've been awesome and
- 45:57Speaker 7: so open. And thank you very much for sharing your
- 45:59Speaker 7: journey with us. I wanted to have you introduce this song.

- 46:48Speaker 21: so dark I couldn't breathe You came back to me And.
- 46:55Speaker 2: Brought me peace But when I'm You pulled me up

- 47:15Speaker 2: so lost You gave me to your own.

- 47:37Speaker 1: You're the only one that gives me strength to breathe.
- 47:42Speaker 21: So when I'm weak, you're my center of peace.
- 47:48Speaker 2: You're my center of peace.
- 47:54Speaker 1: You're my center of peace.
- 48:03Speaker 23: Jo chhuta ik sira, zara to sab kuch bikhra.

- 50:15Speaker 5: It's your boy, Badshah.
- 50:17Speaker 24: Born Aditya Pratik Singh Sisodia in New Delhi, Basha has
- 50:20Speaker 24: been a game-changer in the industry since his early days

- 50:35Speaker 24: slowing down anytime soon. In 2024, Badshah dropped some incredible
- 50:40Speaker 24: tracks including O Sachina with Devine and Nikita Gandhi, Mourni,
- 50:44Speaker 24: On Track featuring Shai and the super catchy Naina Dekke Hina.
- 50:48Speaker 24: Badshah is all about blending styles, whether it's Hindi, Haryanthi

- 51:02Speaker 7: And to me, I think Badshah has been really that
- 51:04Speaker 7: one of those big global players here for of the
- 51:08Speaker 7: Indian music industry. And the cool thing about what he's
- 51:11Speaker 7: doing out there is not only is he continuing to tour,
- 51:15Speaker 7: but he continues to put out great music, not only
- 51:18Speaker 7: collaborating in the space of film, but also in the
- 51:22Speaker 7: independent scene. He's been one of the big shining lights
- 51:27Speaker 7: of Indian music. And this song right here is his latest.
- 51:31Speaker 1: It's called Jimna.
- 51:38Speaker 2: .
- 51:39Speaker 7: .
- 51:46Speaker 9: .
- 51:47Speaker 8: .
- 51:49Speaker 12: .
- 51:51Speaker 11: Ouchie ouchie, pouchie pouchie, my ears are black, my
- 51:54Speaker 11: ears are black, where is my gang?
- 51:57Speaker 1: Rowdy rowdy, we got money like we Southie Southie.
- 52:04Speaker 4: .
- 52:08Speaker 8: .
- 52:13Speaker 1: Hey!
- 52:31Speaker 3: Ekati karati mati mati khelati Chalati dhavati ran ran bagadti Hala.
- 52:40Speaker 25: Ek kola re kola kola hala re Kava kava shodhi
- 52:45Speaker 25: pan saapade.
- 52:46Speaker 2: Na kona re Gare gare.
- 52:49Speaker 25: Gare gare gare gare tu saath mere tu gare.
- 53:07Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 53:25Speaker 1: Jimna is the song.
- 53:41Speaker 7: I really enjoyed that conversation with Selena Sharma today. And
- 53:45Speaker 7: I'll give you my closing remarks on that conversation.
- 53:49Speaker 1: Give you my perspective from this side of the seat.
- 53:53Speaker 7: Can't wait.
- 53:54Speaker 1: In the meantime, enjoy Asis Kaur's latest song. It's called Raazi. Raazi.
- 54:14Speaker 23: Aakha band kar la yakeen suhne aaje di har waari
- 54:18Speaker 23: jit jayau baasi ravaangi Jai mai tere naal ravaangi, teraazi
- 54:22Speaker 23: ravaangi I have lost all the excuses that I have
- 54:49Speaker 23: kept for myself. Wherever my heart has gone, I have
- 54:53Speaker 23: asked for it. I will keep it in the same place.
- 54:57Speaker 23: I am stuck in the middle of your heart. I
- 55:01Speaker 23: have to talk to you a little bit. If I
- 55:09Speaker 23: stay with you.
- 55:11Speaker 1: I will remain content.
- 55:49Speaker 23: And only you will remember, or you will see your shortcomings.
- 55:55Speaker 23: You are good, but you don't look good in the
- 55:59Speaker 23: sky and the earth. Don't move away from me, you
- 56:06Speaker 23: are in my dreams. You are the one I read
- 56:09Speaker 23: in the book. What will you hear if I ask you?
- 56:14Speaker 23: You are in my voice. Give me your hand and
- 56:17Speaker 23: take me with you.
- 56:18Speaker 1: Now she's gone, everybody. The song is called Raazi.
- 56:49Speaker 7: Give the big salute to Selena Sharma for joining us
- 56:53Speaker 7: today on a Monday program. Let me tell you guys
- 56:57Speaker 7: what you just heard. And to me, Selena Sharma is
- 57:00Speaker 7: a child of the world. I said it to her directly,
- 57:02Speaker 7: and I'll say it to you now. She is what
- 57:05Speaker 7: the future of this business looks like. No borders, no boundaries.
- 57:10Speaker 7: But understand where that starts. It starts small. A girl
- 57:14Speaker 7: from a small town in Australia. and a mother cutting
- 57:17Speaker 7: work to drive her two hours to Sydney for singing lessons.
- 57:21Speaker 7: A mother who'd been her manager since she was six
- 57:23Speaker 7: years old. And when the moment of truth came, at
- 57:27Speaker 7: 16 years old, a plane to London alone. It was
- 57:31Speaker 7: that same mother who said the words, You've wanted this
- 57:34Speaker 7: your whole life. School can wait. That's why Dear Mama
- 57:38Speaker 7: lands the way it does. And I love this detail.
- 57:43Speaker 7: She kept that song a secret from the woman who
- 57:46Speaker 7: manages her career, surprised her at the release party. Mom cried,
- 57:51Speaker 7: and of course she did. Now think about what she
- 57:54Speaker 7: told us about Center of Peace. A song about God,
- 57:58Speaker 7: about finding stillness, born on a rainy afternoon in Johannesburg,
- 58:03Speaker 7: a room full of writers deciding to make something with purpose.
- 58:07Speaker 7: Finished with Bansuri and Sarangi, final vocal cuts in Mumbai because,
- 58:12Speaker 7: her words, you need to touch base with where you're
- 58:16Speaker 7: originally from. She took the chaos of Mumbai and found
- 58:20Speaker 7: the peace, and then Sonu Nigam, the legend, the solo
- 58:23Speaker 7: feature on the entire project, sent back a verse that
- 58:28Speaker 7: made her want to cry, she said.
- 58:30Speaker 1: She said it sounded like her childhood. Half Indian, half
- 58:35Speaker 1: Italian and Maltese.
- 58:37Speaker 7: Raised in Australia, based in London, writing in South Africa,
- 58:42Speaker 7: recording in India, backed by an American company. That one
- 58:46Speaker 7: song crossed three continents before it ever reached your ears
- 58:51Speaker 7: this morning. And when I asked what she'd tell the
- 58:54Speaker 7: young girl watching her, she didn't talk about charts. She said,
- 58:58Speaker 7: when you're low, trust me, it gets better.
- 59:01Speaker 1: Be consistent.
- 59:03Speaker 7: Make the sacrifices and keep going. That's not just an
- 59:07Speaker 7: artist building a career, that's a young woman building a
- 59:10Speaker 7: world and letting us all live in it. That's Selena Sharma,
- 59:16Speaker 7: and you heard it here on the bridge. I hope
- 59:18Speaker 7: you guys have a great day, everybody. I'll leave you
- 59:21Speaker 7: with this song. It's called Ye Duniya. The artist's name
- 59:24Speaker 7: is Curtain Blue. Have a great day, everybody.
- 59:28Speaker 25: Yesterday was something else, today is something else too Yesterday
- 59:33Speaker 25: was helpless, today why is it noisy? Neither we know
- 59:37Speaker 25: who is it, nor do we know, nor do.
- 59:41Speaker 1: We know who it is.
- 59:44Speaker 25: Yesterday it was abundant, today why is it helpless? Yesterday
- 59:49Speaker 25: it was free, today why is it helpless? Neither we
- 59:53Speaker 25: know who is it, nor do we know, nor do
- 59:56Speaker 25: we know who it is
