- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome into JAG's Am today as we get ready for
- 0:20Speaker 1: two days of joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Lots of fans on hands because it's gonna be a
- 0:25Speaker 2: good one.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Finally get to see some matchups against players, not going
- 0:28Speaker 1: up against themselves on the same team, so that's always
- 0:30Speaker 1: exciting for us.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Let's get into our big.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Things right off the bat, because big thing number one
- 0:34Speaker 1: is joint practice. There's a lot to be gained from that.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Doug Peterson spoke earlier in the week about why he's
- 0:39Speaker 1: so fond of having joined practices with others with other teams.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Yeah, you're right. You get to pick the situation, the scenarios.
- 0:47Speaker 3: It's very controlled.
- 0:48Speaker 1: There's no live tackling or anything like that.
- 0:51Speaker 2: It's you know, but they're their physical practices.
- 0:55Speaker 3: But you can get you can.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Get quite a bit out of them. So special guests
- 1:00Speaker 1: with me here this morning. Let's check in with Jeff Logman.
- 1:03Speaker 1: What does a joint practice bring to the game. Why
- 1:06Speaker 1: is it so special to have a joint practice with
- 1:07Speaker 1: another team.
- 1:09Speaker 3: It's a great question, and the biggest thing that it
- 1:11Speaker 3: brings is competition. You know, you're used to going against
- 1:13Speaker 3: your own players. But then all of a sudden you
- 1:15Speaker 3: add another team and then a fan base that's going
- 1:18Speaker 3: to be watching very closely. It just amps everything up,
- 1:21Speaker 3: and that's what you want to have as an evaluator,
- 1:23Speaker 3: like for coaches and the scouting staff, the higher the
- 1:26Speaker 3: level of competition that you can get to a game,
- 1:29Speaker 3: the better it's going to be.
- 1:31Speaker 2: JP.
- 1:31Speaker 1: We had the pleasure of doing this last year we
- 1:33Speaker 1: went to Detroit. Now we're hosting a joint practice.
- 1:36Speaker 2: What do you kind of get out of it? When
- 1:37Speaker 2: you get to watch practice.
- 1:38Speaker 3: You get to see the starters go. You might not
- 1:40Speaker 3: get to see many reps for last week. For example,
- 1:43Speaker 3: the Jaguar starters, if you will, had nine snaps in
- 1:46Speaker 3: the game. Well today they'll have what fifty or sixty Jeff,
- 1:49Speaker 3: I mean, they're going to have a lot of opportunities
- 1:51Speaker 3: out there against another team, and as Doug reference, there
- 1:54Speaker 3: no live tackling, so you can protect your guys for
- 1:56Speaker 3: the most part. Those are invaluable reps for the starter
- 2:00Speaker 3: and a really good piece of film to watch after
- 2:02Speaker 3: this next two days.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Our second big thing today is going to be matchups
- 2:06Speaker 1: to watch because, as you guys mentioned, going up against
- 2:08Speaker 1: a different team you can learn a lot and learn
- 2:10Speaker 1: about different defenses and offenses.
- 2:12Speaker 2: So JP, when you're looking.
- 2:13Speaker 1: At different position groups today, where are you going to
- 2:15Speaker 1: be honing in?
- 2:16Speaker 2: What are you going to be watching?
- 2:17Speaker 3: Okay, the Jaguars defensive backs against this great Buccaneers wide
- 2:22Speaker 3: receiver corps. Mike Evans is probably going to Canton at
- 2:25Speaker 3: some point.
- 2:26Speaker 4: How are they going to cover him in one on ones?
- 2:29Speaker 3: Tyson Campbell, Mike Evans, get your popcorn ready.
- 2:32Speaker 4: I'm excited for that. I'm also logs.
- 2:34Speaker 3: The guys in the middle are going to be fun
- 2:36Speaker 3: to watch today too, because the Bucks have some beef
- 2:39Speaker 3: up front. Well, and one guy in particularly that's got
- 2:42Speaker 3: a lot of beef, which is Vita Vea. I think
- 2:44Speaker 3: he goes about three hundred and sixty pounds now he's
- 2:46Speaker 3: tried to swim down a little bit. He's a nose
- 2:48Speaker 3: tackle for the Bucks. And the Jaguars have a new center,
- 2:51Speaker 3: Mitch Morse. So I think that's a great opportunity to evaluate.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Is when you have a joint practice, when you have
- 2:58Speaker 3: the big guys in a controlled environment. Boy, that's when
- 3:01Speaker 3: the coaching staff really gets a lot of evaluation.
- 3:03Speaker 1: At that point, our final big thing today is going
- 3:06Speaker 1: to be Armstead activated. Eric Armstead, who is signed in
- 3:09Speaker 1: the offseason, is going to be seeing his first action.
- 3:12Speaker 1: He's been out there practicing on the side, but not
- 3:14Speaker 1: with a team, Jeff, when you have a player coming back,
- 3:17Speaker 1: Doug Peterson talked about Armstead when he does come back,
- 3:19Speaker 1: he wanted him to be at one hundred percent.
- 3:20Speaker 2: You expect we'll see that today.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Well, And I think it's smart, you know. And that's
- 3:24Speaker 3: the one great thing about kind of the new age
- 3:27Speaker 3: of the NFL is that you can take care of
- 3:29Speaker 3: the players up until hey, it's time to get ready.
- 3:30Speaker 3: And Armstead's played a lot of football, so I don't
- 3:32Speaker 3: really worry about that. He's a premium athlete. And if
- 3:35Speaker 3: you happen to hear to Sean Gibson, who has recently signed,
- 3:38Speaker 3: when he came in, he talked glowingly about two things
- 3:42Speaker 3: that Armstead brings to the table. Number one is a
- 3:44Speaker 3: great performance and he's a heck of a football player.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Number two, great leadership. So I'm looking forward to him
- 3:49Speaker 3: getting back in the mix. I don't know how much
- 3:52Speaker 3: he's going to be doing out there today against the Bucks,
- 3:54Speaker 3: probably off to the side until he kind of gets
- 3:57Speaker 3: up to speed. You know, we've heard leadership, leadership, leader
- 4:00Speaker 3: ship around this guy. To Sean Gibson spoke yesterday and
- 4:02Speaker 3: it was teammates with him out in San Francisco, and
- 4:04Speaker 3: that's the first thing he did was went up and
- 4:06Speaker 3: gave double A a hug. That's what he said. So
- 4:09Speaker 3: he's that type of guy you want in your locker
- 4:11Speaker 3: room to kind of lead the ways. A lot of
- 4:14Speaker 3: young guys with a new defense, a lot of change
- 4:16Speaker 3: happening here. Somebody that can be that that compass, that
- 4:20Speaker 3: center for this team.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Maybe he's that guy. And obviously he's.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Hopefully still playing at a high level coming off that injury.
- 4:27Speaker 4: Let's see him work back to health.
- 4:29Speaker 3: And Doug Peterson said, guy that is probably likely next
- 4:32Speaker 3: week against Atlanta where he would get some game time.
- 4:34Speaker 2: All right, we'll keep an eye on that today for sure.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Stay with us here on jag zam as we look
- 4:38Speaker 1: a little bit more into joint Factice and what we're
- 4:40Speaker 1: gonna be looking at. Welcome back to jag Zam, brought
- 4:57Speaker 1: to you a part by Fields Auto, Jacksonville's premier lugery
- 5:00Speaker 1: the auto group. Go to Fields Auto dot com. This
- 5:05Speaker 1: this welcome back to so that today I have two
- 5:08Speaker 1: special guests.
- 5:09Speaker 2: It's like happy our Thursday in season.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Wow, But Doug Peterson Show's next. Now I'm kidding. It's
- 5:14Speaker 3: only on Thursdays. But it's great to be with you
- 5:16Speaker 3: this morning.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Guys.
- 5:18Speaker 1: We see each other every day, but it's always nice
- 5:19Speaker 1: to we do a little show together.
- 5:20Speaker 3: No doubt. And it's nice to be in the air
- 5:23Speaker 3: conditioning for a while before we go out into the
- 5:26Speaker 3: blast furness.
- 5:27Speaker 1: So absolutely, because it's going to be in the heat
- 5:29Speaker 1: of the day today as they take on the boxes.
- 5:31Speaker 2: I'm sure that was probably the point of having practice.
- 5:33Speaker 1: A little bit later in the middle of the day
- 5:35Speaker 1: and getting the most out of it in these Florida conditions.
- 5:38Speaker 1: But before we get out there, we're going to talk
- 5:39Speaker 1: a little bit about what we've seen so far this
- 5:41Speaker 1: preseason and this or that we kind of do either
- 5:44Speaker 1: or for us for this segment, and we talked a
- 5:47Speaker 1: lot about Parker Washington, that great return he had on
- 5:49Speaker 1: the first kickoff that we saw. But when it comes
- 5:52Speaker 1: to a group like that, obviously, Devin Dubernet was brought
- 5:55Speaker 1: in in the off season as a free agent to
- 5:56Speaker 1: do just that. Obviously, preseason we can't take a ton
- 5:59Speaker 1: out of playing time. But do we know exactly what
- 6:01Speaker 1: that's gonna look like? Jeff, who do you think is
- 6:02Speaker 1: going to be doing this?
- 6:03Speaker 2: It could be two players, but who are they gonna be?
- 6:05Speaker 3: Well, we know it's gonna be two because that's the
- 6:07Speaker 3: new kickoff pool. You have to have two guys back.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Devin Duvernet is clearly, in my opinion, gonna be one
- 6:12Speaker 3: of those guys. Now, who's gonna be the other guy?
- 6:14Speaker 3: I think it's gonna be a mix in the match
- 6:16Speaker 3: a little bit. Who's healthy and who's gonna be active
- 6:18Speaker 3: on game day. I think Parker Washington's a possibility. I
- 6:21Speaker 3: think Tank Digby is a possibility. And if you listen
- 6:24Speaker 3: to what Doug Peterson talked about, he talked about the
- 6:26Speaker 3: new kickoff return being very similar to a zone run. Well,
- 6:29Speaker 3: if it's similar to a zone run, then what you
- 6:32Speaker 3: want to have a zone running back right and Tank Bigsby?
- 6:35Speaker 3: So uh, I think it's I'm excited for this new
- 6:38Speaker 3: play though. I'm excited for the possibilities. And the league
- 6:42Speaker 3: could also tweak some of the rules as we go
- 6:44Speaker 3: along in this season, so we got to kind of
- 6:45Speaker 3: see what's gonna happen. Yeah, I'm with you. Jeff Duvernet
- 6:48Speaker 3: was brought here for a reason, and it wasn't to
- 6:51Speaker 3: be the fifth wide receiver, like he's here to be
- 6:53Speaker 3: the return guy. And that makes sense punts in and kickoffs.
- 6:56Speaker 3: And to your point, I think they could mix and
- 6:59Speaker 3: match some different ideas on the kickoff return depending on
- 7:02Speaker 3: what type of return maybe they want to execute. If
- 7:05Speaker 3: they want a running back style, okay, if they want
- 7:08Speaker 3: Parker Washington to do his thing, they can put him
- 7:11Speaker 3: in there. One well, the other team might just boom
- 7:12Speaker 3: it out of the back of the end zone. You
- 7:14Speaker 3: never know, So that could just change the whole strategy altogether.
- 7:16Speaker 3: And if they changed the rule and put a touch
- 7:19Speaker 3: back back to the thirty five, then all of a sudden,
- 7:21Speaker 3: those kickoff returns will be in play a whole lot.
- 7:23Speaker 4: More than you think.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Good point bringing up Tank Bigsby.
- 7:26Speaker 1: If he didn't trip himself up, you might have had
- 7:27Speaker 1: an even better return than we saw from park It's
- 7:29Speaker 1: a touchdown.
- 7:30Speaker 4: It would have been a house call.
- 7:31Speaker 3: I think he saw his eyes were getting big and
- 7:34Speaker 3: turned over.
- 7:34Speaker 4: Yeah, I got him.
- 7:35Speaker 3: I'm so excited for him though this year. I mean
- 7:37Speaker 3: in that role, but then also as a running back,
- 7:40Speaker 3: just because last year when you came out of camp,
- 7:43Speaker 3: you would ask all the different veterans on the team
- 7:44Speaker 3: who you were excited about watching for the younger guys,
- 7:47Speaker 3: and multiple guys kept pointing to Tank Bigsby. But then
- 7:51Speaker 3: he had, you know, the kind of the disappointing start,
- 7:53Speaker 3: and I think there was a confidence issue kind of
- 7:55Speaker 3: in two different ways, one his own and then also
- 7:58Speaker 3: the coaching staff. But I think he's a stut and
- 8:02Speaker 3: I think if he gets a little bit of the
- 8:03Speaker 3: ball rolling to start the season, lookout. And I know
- 8:06Speaker 3: we're talking kick returns here, but to your point about Tank,
- 8:09Speaker 3: his performance in the game the other night at running back,
- 8:11Speaker 3: the way he moved and was decisive and downhill, that
- 8:15Speaker 3: will farewell for him in the future.
- 8:17Speaker 1: We've talked a ton on our show just about those
- 8:19Speaker 1: second year guys that jump they're going to make, and
- 8:21Speaker 1: both of those guys in their second year, so it's
- 8:22Speaker 1: good to see, at least in the preseason.
- 8:24Speaker 2: We hope that carries over guys well.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Also in this or that we're kind of looking as
- 8:27Speaker 1: we get closer to that roster cut down what exactly
- 8:30Speaker 1: that's going to look like Jeffie, you've been a part
- 8:32Speaker 1: of the process. Of course, final roster spots. How much
- 8:34Speaker 1: of this is locked in and how much of this
- 8:36Speaker 1: is really kind of up for grabs. And if you
- 8:38Speaker 1: do have a breakout performance, is there always space for somebody?
- 8:41Speaker 3: Oh, I absolutely think that there's always room for a
- 8:44Speaker 3: breakout performance. You know, there's a number of positions that
- 8:47Speaker 3: are probably up for grabs. I mean, ballpark probably five, six,
- 8:52Speaker 3: maybe seven. I think the majority of them that we're
- 8:56Speaker 3: looking at really are on defense. I think the offense
- 9:00Speaker 3: this is pretty well set. Yeah, we've got a wide
- 9:02Speaker 3: receiver group. I think we're pretty confident who's gonna play.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Maybe the last two spots or one spot there's maybe
- 9:07Speaker 3: up for grabs. The running back room. I think there's
- 9:10Speaker 3: a pretty good idea of their quarterbacks. We know what's
- 9:12Speaker 3: going to go on. But defense in the back end,
- 9:14Speaker 3: on the defense, the linebacking position, and also up front.
- 9:17Speaker 3: That's the big question mark.
- 9:18Speaker 4: Is on the defensive side of the ball.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Yeah, and they've got a new coordinator to figure out
- 9:22Speaker 3: a new defense and some new players to go in
- 9:25Speaker 3: those roles, so they've.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Got some time to do that.
- 9:26Speaker 3: That's why this game coming up Saturday is so big
- 9:29Speaker 3: because in theory, the starters are going to get most
- 9:32Speaker 3: of the time on the practice field this week, like
- 9:34Speaker 3: we talked about, that.
- 9:35Speaker 4: Means guys that are on the.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Bubble bubble, if you will, we'll get a lot of
- 9:39Speaker 3: time in a game under the lights in live conditions.
- 9:42Speaker 4: That's huge going towards their effort to make.
- 9:44Speaker 3: This rush and to kind of expand to what JP
- 9:47Speaker 3: mentioned there about having a new defensive coordinator. You know,
- 9:49Speaker 3: all these guys that were with his football team in
- 9:51Speaker 3: the year's past. When you have a new coordinator, okay,
- 9:55Speaker 3: there's not a lot of bank left. You know. What
- 9:57Speaker 3: I mean by bank is that you're not referring back
- 9:59Speaker 3: to what I what I did before. You know, so
- 10:01Speaker 3: the new coordinator's going to say, hey, look, I want
- 10:03Speaker 3: to see what you've done for me lately and what
- 10:05Speaker 3: you're doing for me now because I wasn't here last year,
- 10:08Speaker 3: so it's a little different.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Jeff, have you ever seen in your experience someone that
- 10:12Speaker 1: maybe had such a crazy performance and your memory at
- 10:15Speaker 1: recent or not that like won themselves a roster spot almost.
- 10:19Speaker 3: I'm going to give you one that happened last year.
- 10:21Speaker 3: All right, what you got, that's Elijah Cooks. You know
- 10:23Speaker 3: he's got my depth chart here in front of me.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Elijah Cooks. Last year, the performance that he had in
- 10:28Speaker 3: the preseason was so strong that he was the highest
- 10:33Speaker 3: rated player in PFF's ranking system. Okay, and when you're
- 10:37Speaker 3: the highest rated player, even though it's a system that
- 10:40Speaker 3: most teams don't create themselves, it's something that a lot
- 10:44Speaker 3: of teams subscribe to. And his performance catching the contested
- 10:47Speaker 3: balls and the size of him, obviously the Jaguars felt
- 10:51Speaker 3: that they had to keep him on the active roster.
- 10:53Speaker 3: He's a perfect example of a player who who showed
- 10:56Speaker 3: in live action under the lights that hey, look I
- 10:59Speaker 3: belong and this year is he gonna make it? I
- 11:02Speaker 3: don't know. It just depends on that in game performance.
- 11:05Speaker 3: It look how so much toller he is than Parker Washington.
- 11:07Speaker 3: They're standing right next to each other.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Different skill set, It's right, it's a little.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Different style and that's a good one. I remember Jaydon Mickens.
- 11:13Speaker 3: I think he was that kind of guy too. This
- 11:15Speaker 3: is a few years ago. He was kind of a
- 11:16Speaker 3: kick returner. I think he was undrafted. Kind of thing.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Interesting story about him. He actually slept in his car
- 11:23Speaker 3: for a while. He was that guy. And he and
- 11:26Speaker 3: kind of interesting this with the week that you bring
- 11:28Speaker 3: this up. He also played for the Box absolutely and
- 11:31Speaker 3: and it really had some successful games and seasons down
- 11:34Speaker 3: there in Tampa Bay. But he's that guy that just
- 11:36Speaker 3: popped out of my head when you asked that question. Yeah,
- 11:38Speaker 3: because he slept in his car during training camp here.
- 11:41Speaker 3: That's it's pretty here. In the off season, he was
- 11:43Speaker 3: slept in his car, didn't have a place, didn't have
- 11:45Speaker 3: any money.
- 11:45Speaker 2: You think that guy wants a roster spot?
- 11:46Speaker 3: Absolutely? Yeah, who incredible.
- 11:49Speaker 2: I love to see that.
- 11:49Speaker 1: I love to see those guys that maybe are on
- 11:51Speaker 1: the fringe kind of earning their spot, and hopefully we'll
- 11:53Speaker 1: see another one or two of.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Those this season. Stay with us here on jag Zam.
- 11:57Speaker 1: We're going to answer some fan questions and we come
- 11:58Speaker 1: back after the break as get ready for joint practice
- 12:01Speaker 1: with the Buccaneers. For eleven years, Dreamfinders Homes has been
- 12:13Speaker 1: proud to call themselves the official homebuilder of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Visit dreamfinders homes dot com for all of the available
- 12:20Speaker 1: inventory and go Jags. All right, guys, we've got an
- 12:28Speaker 1: ozone mailbag for you, but no Ozone, so we're gonna
- 12:32Speaker 1: have to fill in and do our best.
- 12:33Speaker 3: I have a question, why is he always frowning.
- 12:35Speaker 2: In the logo, you know, John Oser?
- 12:37Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess I can tell you this.
- 12:38Speaker 3: The logo is way better looking than John.
- 12:41Speaker 1: We have to post, we have to poke a little
- 12:43Speaker 1: bit of fun. If he's not here, he might as well.
- 12:45Speaker 3: And I heard he had card issues, like he loves
- 12:47Speaker 3: a mile and a half away, like walk it's ten.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Minutes if John doesn't come biking into practice at some
- 12:53Speaker 1: point to them to be arry.
- 12:55Speaker 3: You guys, can you guys picture John Friday in the bike?
- 12:59Speaker 1: No, maybe one of those little took things that they
- 13:01Speaker 1: have that all the fans used to get out of
- 13:03Speaker 1: the stage.
- 13:04Speaker 2: I'll just roll in with his.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Oh yeah, somebody's riding the bike.
- 13:08Speaker 2: And straw hat. Yeah they're pedaling, ye yeah right.
- 13:14Speaker 3: I'll never forget. And I know we're going off the
- 13:16Speaker 3: rail seat. However, John Oser stories just popped in my head.
- 13:19Speaker 3: I remember one time Josh Scobe was in traffic on
- 13:22Speaker 3: day Meadows and took a video of John Oser running down.
- 13:24Speaker 4: The sidewalk jogging.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Really, it was fantastic that's not a very athletic run.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Oh man, have you ever seen John run? I can
- 13:32Speaker 3: get John because you know, John and I go way back.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Sure, I love John Oser stories.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Please When I when I was a player here, John
- 13:38Speaker 3: was actually one of the beat riders for the Florida
- 13:40Speaker 3: Times Union alongside Pete Prisco.
- 13:43Speaker 2: That's quite a do I mean.
- 13:44Speaker 3: And he had a ponytail. Pony's head had a little
- 13:47Speaker 3: pony tail.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Stop it.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Oh yeah, he walked around the locker room and he'd
- 13:50Speaker 3: asked questions. They had a little ponytail, and you know, yeah,
- 13:54Speaker 3: way back.
- 13:56Speaker 1: My favorite John Oder story because obviously I'm new. When
- 13:58Speaker 1: we went to London last year, he forgot his media
- 14:01Speaker 1: credential on the bus. We took a bus to Wembley
- 14:02Speaker 1: Stadium and they parked us rather far away because or
- 14:06Speaker 1: they drop us off.
- 14:07Speaker 2: But then we had to walk a little.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Bit into the stadium and he didn't have it when
- 14:10Speaker 1: we got to the security and couldn't find his way
- 14:12Speaker 1: back to the bus and had to call several people.
- 14:15Speaker 1: I think an hour later.
- 14:16Speaker 2: We got him in eventually pulled some strings and whatnot.
- 14:19Speaker 4: But I can imagine did he use the line don't
- 14:22Speaker 4: you know who?
- 14:23Speaker 3: I am. I'm Johnny O's.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Do you read Jaguars the mail bags?
- 14:28Speaker 1: Come on, come on, all right, We're gonna do our
- 14:30Speaker 1: best Johnny O impression and try to answer some of
- 14:32Speaker 1: these mail bag questions that he has from the viewers
- 14:35Speaker 1: as only Johnny Oken. But we'll do what we can.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Our first question is a little bit about the quarterback room.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Dave from Jacksonville says, is this the best quarterback room
- 14:42Speaker 1: that the Jags have ever assembled?
- 14:44Speaker 2: Ken? Or will they keep all three of these guys?
- 14:47Speaker 3: Wow? I think it's the best quarterback room you think
- 14:49Speaker 3: you ever Yeah to tot, I mean I do. And
- 14:53Speaker 3: here's why. First of all, you've got a guy that
- 14:55Speaker 3: you're paying fifty five million dollars to, Okay and Trevor
- 14:57Speaker 3: Lawrence that I ought to tell you that he's pretty good,
- 15:00Speaker 3: and I believe he's a franchise guy. Mac Jones' former
- 15:02Speaker 3: first round pick was a starter for a long period
- 15:04Speaker 3: of time with the New England Patriots, who they got
- 15:06Speaker 3: in trade, which was, by the way, one of the
- 15:08Speaker 3: best trades in Jaguars history. To acquire a player of
- 15:11Speaker 3: that caliber. On the way out, you're probably gonna get
- 15:13Speaker 3: a great contensially pick and then CJ. Bethards. You know,
- 15:16Speaker 3: so I like it because here's here's the thing, Trevor
- 15:19Speaker 3: and CJ. You can run the same system with and
- 15:22Speaker 3: my excuse me, Trevor and Mack and Mac is going
- 15:25Speaker 3: to be the backup in my opinion, and CJ. I
- 15:28Speaker 3: think there's a chance that he ends up on practice squad.
- 15:31Speaker 3: I don't think there's any doubt about that. And yeah,
- 15:33Speaker 3: you don't trade for a guy like Mac Jones for
- 15:36Speaker 3: him to not be your backup quarterback and have that opportunity.
- 15:40Speaker 3: So I think he in fact, I think he starts
- 15:42Speaker 3: this game and this is a big opportunity for him
- 15:45Speaker 3: to showcase because there may not be many opportunities in
- 15:48Speaker 3: the regular season for him to play. In terms of
- 15:51Speaker 3: the historical stuff, I'll leave that to you, but yeah,
- 15:53Speaker 3: you're right, fifty five million dollar guy, first round pick
- 15:56Speaker 3: and Mac Jones, CJ. Betherd's played a lot of football games.
- 16:00Speaker 3: This is Tony Boselli predicted this. He locked it on
- 16:03Speaker 3: Monday Night. But the Jaguars are going undefeated in the preseason.
- 16:07Speaker 3: I wonder where he got that because of the experience
- 16:11Speaker 3: at quarterback and compared to other quarterback rooms.
- 16:13Speaker 4: This time of year.
- 16:14Speaker 3: I mean, no offense to Nathan work, but there's no
- 16:16Speaker 3: Nathan Urkes on this team coming from the CFL. Okay,
- 16:19Speaker 3: and let me ask you a question, where do you
- 16:20Speaker 3: think the Selly got that line from? Was he talking
- 16:22Speaker 3: to you? He got it from me when I mentioned
- 16:25Speaker 3: it in our broadcast during the game. There you go, okay,
- 16:27Speaker 3: because you know, look at the reality is is that
- 16:29Speaker 3: when you're playing teams in the preseason, when you get
- 16:32Speaker 3: to their second half or into the second half, the
- 16:35Speaker 3: other team is playing a drafted player, some guy who's
- 16:38Speaker 3: been on the street, the very inexperienced. The Jaguars have
- 16:41Speaker 3: three guys that are highly experienced through and through. The
- 16:44Speaker 3: great thing from an evaluation standpoint is is that when
- 16:47Speaker 3: you have three quarterbacks that are functional, it actually allows
- 16:50Speaker 3: you to evaluate everybody else around them at a higher
- 16:53Speaker 3: level because the quarterback, when he's doing his job, then
- 16:56Speaker 3: everybody else can do their job. So I'm excited about
- 16:59Speaker 3: I'm also really excited about Trevor and Mac Jones being
- 17:02Speaker 3: one and two because if something happens to Trevor, the
- 17:07Speaker 3: system stays the same. In the past, when Trevor would
- 17:10Speaker 3: get hurt, you kind of had to alter the offense
- 17:12Speaker 3: a little bit to cater more towards some of the
- 17:15Speaker 3: strengths that CJ. Bethard has. In my opinion, with Mac
- 17:19Speaker 3: Jones and Trevor Lurch, you're not changing the offense. You're
- 17:21Speaker 3: something happens to Trevor, you put Mac in and you
- 17:24Speaker 3: play the offense. I think to that point last year,
- 17:27Speaker 3: whatever was happening with Trevor, I think they would have
- 17:29Speaker 3: been more apt to, hey, you know what, Trevor, sit
- 17:31Speaker 3: down a couple of weeks. Mac can handle this early
- 17:34Speaker 3: December and let's get you back for the stretch run.
- 17:36Speaker 3: But it didn't happen last year, and now they have
- 17:39Speaker 3: that opportunity.
- 17:39Speaker 1: I think that's a great point to make, because maybe
- 17:42Speaker 1: the back end of the season is a little bit different.
- 17:43Speaker 1: If you're practicing and playing that way, let's not hopefully,
- 17:47Speaker 1: or come.
- 17:48Speaker 4: On, Scott, if.
- 17:51Speaker 3: That way, I don't know.
- 17:53Speaker 2: If it's not, don't break anything, we don't own it,
- 17:57Speaker 2: all right.
- 17:58Speaker 1: The second question is about some of our defensive players
- 18:00Speaker 1: that we've been looking at and training camp.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Brian from Tampa says it looks like Chad.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Mumma's got a real role in the defense now, looks
- 18:06Speaker 1: like they might be using him at different positions, So
- 18:09Speaker 1: could he push for a starting role.
- 18:10Speaker 2: What's this defense going to look like exactly?
- 18:12Speaker 3: Well, it's a four down lineman defense in theory. It's
- 18:16Speaker 3: a four to three if you will, But how many
- 18:18Speaker 3: times are they really going to have three linebackers on
- 18:20Speaker 3: the field with the way offense is running the NFL today?
- 18:23Speaker 4: So is it a four to two.
- 18:26Speaker 3: Five nickel defense starting defense? If that's the case, that
- 18:29Speaker 3: he might not be on the field starting a whole lot.
- 18:32Speaker 3: I think he's got some things to prove still in
- 18:34Speaker 3: this camp lodge because there are a lot of newer,
- 18:37Speaker 3: younger faces in that linebacker room you talked about. This
- 18:39Speaker 3: is a spot that linebacker room where some guys are
- 18:42Speaker 3: trying to make the roster and make a name for themselves.
- 18:45Speaker 3: I'm not saying he's on the bubble, but I'm saying
- 18:48Speaker 3: he's got to show some stuff here in the next
- 18:49Speaker 3: couple of weeks to make sure he ensures that strong
- 18:53Speaker 3: side linebacker position. Let me just go back to the
- 18:56Speaker 3: original question, which was Brian from Tampa. Isn't it nice
- 18:59Speaker 3: to have Brian from Tampa collin or set right and
- 19:01Speaker 3: in for a Jaguars question. I appreciate that. Okay, so
- 19:04Speaker 3: we're stealing fans from Tampa. That's a great thing. And
- 19:08Speaker 3: to answer JP's question, he said, what's the percentage of
- 19:11Speaker 3: snaps at three linebackers are on the field? Historically in
- 19:14Speaker 3: the National Football League, about thirty percent of the downs
- 19:17Speaker 3: on defense, you have three linebackers on the field, and
- 19:20Speaker 3: as the league continues to go year after year, it
- 19:22Speaker 3: continues to grow to a lesser number. I like Chad Muba.
- 19:26Speaker 3: I think he plays hard, he's smart, he's aware. Is
- 19:31Speaker 3: he has athletically gifted If you're going to only choose
- 19:34Speaker 3: two linebackers, is he athletically gifted as Devin Lloyd, No,
- 19:37Speaker 3: not in my opinion. But in a three down linebacker set,
- 19:40Speaker 3: he can play the Sam and then if it goes
- 19:43Speaker 3: to a two down linebacker set, he can I think
- 19:45Speaker 3: play either the will or the mic. The great players
- 19:48Speaker 3: and the guys that have value are the ones that
- 19:50Speaker 3: you have that can play multiple positions, and especially at linebacker,
- 19:54Speaker 3: and all those guys have to cross train, and I
- 19:56Speaker 3: think that's what they appreciate most about MoMA is that
- 19:59Speaker 3: he can play all three positions. He's smart enough to
- 20:02Speaker 3: do that he's aware. He's a try hard guy. I
- 20:05Speaker 3: think he maximizes his athletic ability, and I think he's
- 20:10Speaker 3: also a really good special teams player, which for that role, Okay,
- 20:13Speaker 3: third linebacker, you know, play all the positions, do a
- 20:17Speaker 3: good job when you're on a field at linebacker, and
- 20:19Speaker 3: then you got to play special teams. He's a great,
- 20:21Speaker 3: great fit I think for this football team.
- 20:24Speaker 1: You guys mentioned those younger guys at linebacker as well,
- 20:26Speaker 1: so we have another. Our final question is about that
- 20:28Speaker 1: Ventrel Miller deal with that achilles injury last year. But
- 20:32Speaker 1: when he's gonna if he's gonna make this team, he
- 20:36Speaker 1: has that hand injury. I think the fan question specifically
- 20:39Speaker 1: was do we know if that cast is going to
- 20:41Speaker 1: be on his hand, as it will be removed before
- 20:43Speaker 1: the season starts. Obviously there's a ton of potential there
- 20:46Speaker 1: with him, but what's he going to be able to
- 20:48Speaker 1: do with these injuries?
- 20:49Speaker 4: Well, I haven't heard exactly what the injury is.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Nobody's really said that they don't have to in the preseason,
- 20:54Speaker 3: so you don't know the extent, But I mean it's
- 20:56Speaker 3: wrapped up like a gordina, right, So a gordina is
- 21:00Speaker 3: you've never seen Talladega Knights. No, no, I'm going Talladeagan Knights.
- 21:05Speaker 3: Rat five tackles in the game and nearly a pick.
- 21:10Speaker 3: I mean, that's it's good to see him on the field,
- 21:13Speaker 3: first of all, but he'll do anything to be on
- 21:15Speaker 3: the field considering what he's going through. Okay, let's talk
- 21:18Speaker 3: about what he's going through. He came back from an
- 21:20Speaker 3: achilles tear quickly. Okay, this is not a minor injury,
- 21:24Speaker 3: and and he looks to be playing fast. It started
- 21:27Speaker 3: training camp, it looks like he was still trying to
- 21:29Speaker 3: feel his way around.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Uh.
- 21:31Speaker 3: In the preseason game, I think, in my opinion, he
- 21:33Speaker 3: was one of the top four or five performances of
- 21:36Speaker 3: a Jaguars player. And he did it with that cast
- 21:39Speaker 3: on that left arm, and essentially the cast completely encompasses
- 21:43Speaker 3: the hand in the end, so he can't grab, he
- 21:47Speaker 3: can't use his fingers. That's hard to do his football player,
- 21:50Speaker 3: because especially linebacker, you know you're shedding blocks and you
- 21:53Speaker 3: don't have a hand to be able to grab. So
- 21:56Speaker 3: I give him a lot of credit for playing through this.
- 21:58Speaker 3: But the one thing that he has to prove, because
- 22:00Speaker 3: if you go back to his career, at Florida and
- 22:02Speaker 3: then so far in his career here he's been hurt
- 22:05Speaker 3: a lot. Availability is always the best ability for an
- 22:09Speaker 3: NFL player, So he's got.
- 22:10Speaker 4: To prove that he can stay on the field.
- 22:11Speaker 3: All right. Now, I've never had I don't know what
- 22:13Speaker 3: it is, but if it was a broken hand of
- 22:15Speaker 3: some kind in theory, could you punch it a football
- 22:18Speaker 3: with that cast before? Yes, you can. I played with
- 22:21Speaker 3: it before. Does it hurt, Yeah, if you're going on something.
- 22:26Speaker 3: But you know here it can't hurt that bad because
- 22:28Speaker 3: you know he reached that arm out and knocked that
- 22:30Speaker 3: ball out on the cash defense that he had in
- 22:32Speaker 3: the game. And then the one great thing about when
- 22:36Speaker 3: you're wearing a cast, you can use it as a
- 22:38Speaker 3: weapon of sorts, because you know you're talking about additional weight.
- 22:42Speaker 3: You know, I want to I want to see one
- 22:45Speaker 3: of those one of those plays from the Long East
- 22:48Speaker 3: Yard and take that whole club thing and do one
- 22:50Speaker 3: of one of these things. And I think I think
- 22:53Speaker 3: I broke his neck, but it wasn't. That wasn't the
- 22:56Speaker 3: exact life Jones head slap. That's illegal now, you know
- 22:59Speaker 3: what I mean. He's not a pass rusher, but yeah,
- 23:02Speaker 3: you know, one of these uppercuts or for them up
- 23:04Speaker 3: under the chin. I actually saw him in the game
- 23:06Speaker 3: use that club one time in that fashion.
- 23:08Speaker 2: You have to talk to him about it, coach him up.
- 23:10Speaker 3: It's good. I mean, it's good. I mean if hey,
- 23:11Speaker 3: if you got to use it, there you go.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 23:14Speaker 1: All right, we're getting ready for joint practice today.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Stay with us.
- 23:16Speaker 1: We'll talk a little bit more as we get ready
- 23:18Speaker 1: to take on the Bucks and practice. Jags fans, if
- 23:31Speaker 1: you want customized Jaguars furniture for your home, check out
- 23:34Speaker 1: zipchare dot com to browse all customizable options. Zipchair is
- 23:37Speaker 1: furniture for fans. All right, guys, looks like practice is
- 23:42Speaker 1: finally underway outside, so we're going to get out there
- 23:44Speaker 1: pretty soon. But what are guys hoping to see in
- 23:46Speaker 1: the next couple of days? And then we talked about
- 23:48Speaker 1: position groups, but just overall, what are you hoping to
- 23:50Speaker 1: see physicality?
- 23:51Speaker 3: Well, number one, today, you want to see the starters
- 23:53Speaker 3: because this is the opportunity that you're going to get
- 23:55Speaker 3: to see them because they're probably not going to play
- 23:57Speaker 3: at all in the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,
- 23:59Speaker 3: and so you want to see starters versus starters, and
- 24:02Speaker 3: to see that level of competition ramp up. You know,
- 24:05Speaker 3: I'm going to be focusing on just them because I
- 24:07Speaker 3: know that during the game. This is a great opportunity
- 24:10Speaker 3: during the game coming up against the Bucks, to where
- 24:12Speaker 3: you're looking at those bubble players in the backups. This long, long,
- 24:16Speaker 3: long opportunity in game conditions. Let's see Brian Thomas Junior
- 24:20Speaker 3: against the starting corners for the Buccaneers.
- 24:23Speaker 4: One on ones today will be big.
- 24:24Speaker 3: We mentioned earlier, Vita Vea in the middle against the
- 24:27Speaker 3: interior of the Jaguars offensive line, Jags defensive backs. This
- 24:31Speaker 3: is a really good Buccaneers wide receiver room led by
- 24:34Speaker 3: Mike Evans.
- 24:36Speaker 4: Godwin's there.
- 24:36Speaker 3: I mean, the list goes on and on for this
- 24:39Speaker 3: Bucks team. Baker Mayfield's on the field today too. Yeah,
- 24:41Speaker 3: a bunch of first round pick quarterbacks out there for
- 24:44Speaker 3: both sides. So let's see the ball in the air today.
- 24:46Speaker 3: I think the real good thing about these joint practices
- 24:50Speaker 3: today because if you look at the Buccaneers what they're
- 24:52Speaker 3: known for, they're known for defense. They're head coach Todd
- 24:55Speaker 3: Bowles is a defensive guy. He is, in fact the coordinator.
- 24:59Speaker 3: They don't have an defensive coordinator. This is a great matchup.
- 25:03Speaker 3: This is going to be great reps for Trevor Lawrence
- 25:05Speaker 3: in this first team offense against a really good, really
- 25:08Speaker 3: good defense. And let me bring up something else. Let's
- 25:10Speaker 3: go back to last year the game in Tampa right
- 25:13Speaker 3: around Christmas time. Well, we got to because you know,
- 25:16Speaker 3: this could lead to something today. And the reason I
- 25:19Speaker 3: bring that up that was a game that the Jaguars
- 25:21Speaker 3: really got beat up on. It was embarrassing, it was
- 25:24Speaker 3: not a good performance. And if you want to get specific,
- 25:28Speaker 3: the Jaguars defensive front got beat up by some of
- 25:31Speaker 3: the Buccaneers offensive lineman. And the Buccaneers okay, Buccaneers dot
- 25:36Speaker 3: Com did this whole video segment where one of their
- 25:39Speaker 3: offensive linemen was miked up. Okay, so not only did
- 25:43Speaker 3: you get beat up, but then it was captured in
- 25:46Speaker 3: one of those film moments for Buccaneers dot Com or
- 25:49Speaker 3: whatever their website is. So it's kind of a little
- 25:52Speaker 3: bit of the hey, let me rub your nose in
- 25:53Speaker 3: it kind of the thing. And not that it was intentional,
- 25:55Speaker 3: it just happened that way. So if I'm one of
- 25:58Speaker 3: the Jaguars defensive linemen, i am not forgetting that game,
- 26:02Speaker 3: and I'm not forgetting the embarrassment of having the show
- 26:06Speaker 3: to show how bad it was. That said, I think
- 26:09Speaker 3: at the end of the day, you want everybody healthy
- 26:11Speaker 3: at the end of this thing. That's the idea of
- 26:13Speaker 3: these practices. It's not live tackling to the ground. You
- 26:16Speaker 3: can both teams can get their work in. They've been
- 26:19Speaker 3: working for the last few weeks, the coordinators together on
- 26:22Speaker 3: uncertain situations that you'll see at practice today. You might
- 26:25Speaker 3: not get two minute situations in the game, you're probably
- 26:27Speaker 3: gonna get some of the next two days. So keep
- 26:29Speaker 3: it as clean as you can. Get some great work in,
- 26:32Speaker 3: and I think that's what I'm looking forward to.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Yes, we don't want to fight, but things do get
- 26:36Speaker 1: a little chippy.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Keep your eyes out. Well, we'll be back here on
- 26:39Speaker 2: jag XAM tomorrow.
- 26:40Speaker 1: We'll have a little bit more of a recap and
- 26:41Speaker 1: then another practice with the Bucks.
- 26:43Speaker 2: So thanks for joining us. We'll see then.
