- 0:01Speaker 1: Good afternoon. Minnesota and Atlanta have a long history of
- 0:06Speaker 1: sporting conflict. The nineteen ninety one World Series, the nineteen
- 0:11Speaker 1: ninety eight NFC Championship Game, the twenty eleven and twenty
- 0:16Speaker 1: thirteen WNBA Finals, and now in twenty twenty six, we
- 0:20Speaker 1: have a radio fight. This podcast against what I'm told
- 0:25Speaker 1: is the number one sports talk radio show in Atlanta,
- 0:29Speaker 1: at least according to the X profile of the guy
- 0:32Speaker 1: who hosts it. This is Twin Cities Territory, You're Minnesota
- 0:35Speaker 1: Twins podcast on the Foul Territory Network. I am Zach
- 0:39Speaker 1: Pearce of the Athletic joined as always by Dan Hayes,
- 0:42Speaker 1: the Athletics, Minnesota Twins beat writer who really is the
- 0:46Speaker 1: reason we're all here today, and Tyler Duffy, longtime Major
- 0:49Speaker 1: leaguer and former Minnesota Twin Guys. It's been an eventful
- 0:54Speaker 1: forty eight hours for us on this humble, young, growing podcast,
- 0:59Speaker 1: as we were called out out buying Atlanta talk radio
- 1:02Speaker 1: show for a segment we did last week on Byron Buxton,
- 1:06Speaker 1: and I will let that show explain with this clip.
- 1:09Speaker 2: I didn't want it to come to this, but I
- 1:11Speaker 2: have no choice.
- 1:12Speaker 3: We have been in many a radio war.
- 1:15Speaker 2: We've done it with folks in New York City, in Philadelphia, Boston.
- 1:18Speaker 3: It's happened across the country. I'm not afraid of it.
- 1:21Speaker 2: It's fun, but I'll be damned if it's going to
- 1:24Speaker 2: happen from Minneapolis, Minnesota.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Do you not know what's happening here?
- 1:28Speaker 4: Oh?
- 1:28Speaker 1: And I'm not aware of this.
- 1:30Speaker 5: Somebody else pointing out your early lanes and.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Villas, somebody else ignoring Biral Lewis and what this show
- 1:37Speaker 2: is done. I want to introduce you to the Twin
- 1:39Speaker 2: Cities Territory Podcast.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Whatever the hell that is. These three ham and Angers
- 1:44Speaker 3: who are hosting this.
- 1:45Speaker 2: We're discussing Byron Buxton and referencing our conversation last week,
- 1:50Speaker 2: and the snark was on full display.
- 1:53Speaker 1: So we're gonna pause there. First of all, hand up,
- 1:56Speaker 1: there was a lot of snark. I cannot, I can.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I cannot deny that there will probably be more. Apologize.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I didn't. I just I just said it was true.
- 2:07Speaker 1: There's a lot to unpack from that that first forty
- 2:10Speaker 1: six seconds. I, for one thing, I gave us a
- 2:12Speaker 1: new SoundBite. Every time Dan talks about something I don't
- 2:16Speaker 1: understand or even just we mentioned the name of this podcast,
- 2:19Speaker 1: I can.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Just go like this, whatever the hell that is, and.
- 2:22Speaker 1: That's gonna be great. We're gonna have a lot of
- 2:23Speaker 1: fun with that. What else?
- 2:26Speaker 3: Oh?
- 2:26Speaker 5: He also you know that?
- 2:28Speaker 1: But why why will you be damned if this happens
- 2:32Speaker 1: from Minneapolis? Which small point, But none of us were
- 2:36Speaker 1: in Minneapolis during that show or this one. Very rarely
- 2:40Speaker 1: are any of us in Minneapolis relatively anyway.
- 2:43Speaker 5: I had never thought about it.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Why why can't we fight like the big boys? You know,
- 2:49Speaker 1: we're not New York, We're not in New York, Phille,
- 2:51Speaker 1: you or Boston. We can still you know, you know,
- 2:53Speaker 1: we're nice about it, but we can still fight a
- 2:55Speaker 1: little bit, I would say. Anyway. The real highlight of
- 2:58Speaker 1: that was that we were all called ham and eggers,
- 3:03Speaker 1: And I'm not sure any of us know what that means. Tyler,
- 3:06Speaker 1: you asked your dad? Is that right?
- 3:09Speaker 5: Doesn't ask anybody? I don't know what on earth ham
- 3:14Speaker 5: and egg It sounds like something that my dad used
- 3:16Speaker 5: to say.
- 3:16Speaker 6: I feel like maybe the golf term, but never in
- 3:19Speaker 6: regards to like a slight at someone. I don't know
- 3:23Speaker 6: that's but maybe that means they're eating good.
- 3:25Speaker 2: You know.
- 3:26Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 3:27Speaker 4: I would have thought acceptable insults would have been ass hats,
- 3:33Speaker 4: loud mouths, know it all. But Ham and Eggers. I
- 3:37Speaker 4: was the one that asked my dad, my seventy eight
- 3:39Speaker 4: year old father. Then I went to Google. I went
- 3:45Speaker 4: to Google. Looks like a nice ham sandwich.
- 3:47Speaker 1: You're eating there, Zach, I went black Forest with a Friday,
- 3:53Speaker 1: some avocado spinach. You got to keep it healthy. So
- 3:56Speaker 1: what's quite good?
- 3:58Speaker 5: They're making us better?
- 4:00Speaker 4: Hey, I think I think that this is this makes
- 4:03Speaker 4: me question their ability to evaluate talent because Ham and
- 4:08Speaker 4: Eggers means mediocre. Oh that's an upgrade for us. That's
- 4:14Speaker 4: not baby second rate fly by Night podcast. We're all
- 4:20Speaker 4: rooks here, brand new, we're totally ass hats. And now
- 4:25Speaker 4: we're getting pub out. We're getting free pub out of this,
- 4:28Speaker 4: and I mean, great, hey, mediocre, I'll take that.
- 4:32Speaker 5: I want thank you, sir.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I will admit, first of all, part of what they
- 4:36Speaker 1: were upset about was that we did not mention the
- 4:40Speaker 1: name of the show. We'll get to that in a minute.
- 4:42Speaker 1: It escapes me again for now, but I'll look it up.
- 4:45Speaker 1: What I'm I'm kind of ashamed because I mean, here,
- 4:48Speaker 1: I am playing into it, like like Lonnie Smith going
- 4:52Speaker 1: around second base in Game seven. I took the bait.
- 4:55Speaker 1: I fell for it. I'm eating ham and eggs and
- 4:59Speaker 1: what's next, Like, oh, look at that? Look at is
- 5:02Speaker 1: that him Mexican Ham Tyler?
- 5:07Speaker 5: Yeah, whatever you can find.
- 5:09Speaker 1: This could be their plan just get me to make
- 5:11Speaker 1: poor dietary decisions by you know, basically daring meet in
- 5:15Speaker 1: the podcast.
- 5:15Speaker 4: Week in the competition.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Yeah, so I gotta be careful. But so this next
- 5:21Speaker 1: clip is is uh, it's from their show, but it's
- 5:23Speaker 1: what we said about Byron Buxton reacting to a conversation
- 5:27Speaker 1: they had had, and this is how they they broke
- 5:30Speaker 1: it down.
- 5:31Speaker 7: Talk about Atlanta radio hosts talking about Byron Buxton being
- 5:35Speaker 7: in the outfield there, Hey Atlanta host the guy has
- 5:38Speaker 7: a no trade clause and he's a ten to five.
- 5:40Speaker 5: Now, so what he's from Georgia's argue he is hours
- 5:46Speaker 5: away from Atlanta.
- 5:48Speaker 8: The jokes, I would definitely put that in a place
- 5:51Speaker 8: in one of the like maybe two places that bet
- 5:53Speaker 8: you he'd consider going if the call came.
- 5:57Speaker 3: A couple of things to these podcasts.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Literally always said, well that's you can't walk it back
- 6:01Speaker 2: if you're going to be snarky. You got to lean
- 6:03Speaker 2: into the snark. I know this well. You have to
- 6:05Speaker 2: commit to the bit. You don't say, hey, Atlanta radio
- 6:08Speaker 2: host and put some respect on my name. When you
- 6:11Speaker 2: see my face on the internet and they saw it,
- 6:14Speaker 2: you know something big is happening.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Hey McAfee, he recognizes.
- 6:18Speaker 2: So when you causse Atlanta radio host, recognition would be helpful.
- 6:21Speaker 2: And then don't walk it back by saying the one
- 6:24Speaker 2: freaking thing we said that he's got a no trade.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Thanks for breaking that news to us Minneapolis Twins territory.
- 6:30Speaker 3: You didn't know. I can't read the internet and he's
- 6:32Speaker 3: from here. He's from Georgia. No, as Sherlock. He said,
- 6:36Speaker 3: if there's one.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Or two places, eventually he would acquiesce Atlanta might be
- 6:39Speaker 2: one of them.
- 6:40Speaker 3: So what are they saying? I'm telling they don't want
- 6:43Speaker 3: this smoke.
- 6:44Speaker 1: They don't want to smoke. Apparently nerve. We did. We
- 6:49Speaker 1: hit a nerve.
- 6:51Speaker 3: A nerve.
- 6:52Speaker 5: It is unintentionally too.
- 6:54Speaker 1: It is fair that we sub We did subtweet them,
- 6:58Speaker 1: which used to be a phrase. Chuck and churn Off
- 7:02Speaker 1: is the name of the show on six six eight,
- 7:06Speaker 1: six eighty. It's probably six eighty the fan in Atlanta.
- 7:11Speaker 1: That's the name of the show.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Whatever the hell that is?
- 7:14Speaker 1: All right, see how that works. I'm sure it's quite
- 7:17Speaker 1: popular in Atlanta, of course, just but has it achieved
- 7:23Speaker 1: has it achieved infinite growth since mid March like we have?
- 7:26Speaker 1: I don't know. We'll see. That's kind of cheating a
- 7:29Speaker 1: little bit, I suppose.
- 7:30Speaker 5: But they plateaued, Dan.
- 7:35Speaker 1: They they weren't mad so much about the fact that
- 7:41Speaker 1: we were snarky or or picking on their conversation as
- 7:45Speaker 1: they call it. They were mad that you that you
- 7:49Speaker 1: very cowardly walked it back, I guess in their eyes.
- 7:53Speaker 1: But Dan, you remain in the camp and I respect
- 7:57Speaker 1: this of throwing cold water all over this this topic.
- 8:01Speaker 1: So so please tell us what you were thinking and
- 8:04Speaker 1: how you ended up where you did.
- 8:06Speaker 4: Okay, a couple things first, I want to apologize. I
- 8:09Speaker 4: want to apologize to the two of you because look,
- 8:13Speaker 4: I mean, just seeing the social media and hearing about
- 8:16Speaker 4: these wars that these guys have been in, I'm afraid
- 8:19Speaker 4: of what I might have gotten you guys into, Like
- 8:22Speaker 4: these are guys you want us to get the I
- 8:27Speaker 4: mean real radio wars between Philly and Atlanta and Atlanta
- 8:30Speaker 4: and Boston and Atlanta and New York like these. I
- 8:33Speaker 4: would hope that these guys came at us, you know,
- 8:36Speaker 4: in a gentlemanly fashion and like we can maybe have
- 8:38Speaker 4: a duel with nickel plated pistols and pace it out.
- 8:42Speaker 4: But you know, I'm just thinking with their experience, there's
- 8:45Speaker 4: a chance that these are the kind of guys that
- 8:47Speaker 4: might put a bomb in your car or you know,
- 8:49Speaker 4: might invite you to a restaurant. It's stabby in the
- 8:52Speaker 4: back of the head with the with the screwdriver, sook.
- 8:55Speaker 4: I have toolog for bringing you guys into this, but like,
- 8:58Speaker 4: you know, I'm I mean so like. But here's the thing.
- 9:03Speaker 4: When we did this, Zach, you and I had our
- 9:05Speaker 4: old podcast and we've heard Byron Buckston rumors for about
- 9:08Speaker 4: eight years, running NonStop, and they always are speculation. And look,
- 9:15Speaker 4: radio speculation is fun.
- 9:16Speaker 1: I get it.
- 9:17Speaker 4: It drives fan traffic, it's creative, and it's a way
- 9:21Speaker 4: to talk about your sport right there. It's interesting. But
- 9:24Speaker 4: when you hear it consistently for as long as it's
- 9:29Speaker 4: come along, it gets tiresome. And here's the thing. I
- 9:32Speaker 4: will say one that they're accurate that Atlanta will continue
- 9:37Speaker 4: to pursue Iron Buckson. I reported in August, two days
- 9:41Speaker 4: after the deadline, that six teams basically went around the
- 9:45Speaker 4: Twins front office and tried to convince Byron Buckston's agents
- 9:50Speaker 4: that the grass was greener with their team, and the
- 9:53Speaker 4: two strongest teams of that were the Atlanta Braves and
- 9:55Speaker 4: the New York Mets. That will continue, There's no question,
- 10:00Speaker 4: because here's the thing. Everybody looks at the Twins and
- 10:03Speaker 4: just assumes that because they traded the way they did
- 10:07Speaker 4: last year, that they're still gonna be selling off. And
- 10:10Speaker 4: I understand that perception from a national point of view.
- 10:13Speaker 4: But the fact of the matter is is that, like
- 10:16Speaker 4: I just think that that is fiction. That is, if
- 10:20Speaker 4: you're on the ground and you got the facts from
- 10:22Speaker 4: what we've seen the last six months, I think that
- 10:26Speaker 4: that is going to be more like green eggs and
- 10:28Speaker 4: ham than actual fact. Look, here's here's why let me
- 10:33Speaker 4: get to that right now, is that I think if
- 10:37Speaker 4: Tom Pollad was to trade Byron Buxton, the fan base
- 10:41Speaker 4: will just disintegrate at that point. And here's here's where
- 10:44Speaker 4: we're gonna go from this. When the trade deadline happened
- 10:47Speaker 4: last year, Twins fans, as devastated as they were, were
- 10:50Speaker 4: clinging to hope that the pole Ad family was going
- 10:53Speaker 4: to sell the team after forty plus years ownership, and
- 10:57Speaker 4: thirteen days later, surprise, not gonna sell, guys. The team
- 11:01Speaker 4: is off the market. We are doing a partial sale.
- 11:04Speaker 4: We are surrendering no power. We are getting all the money.
- 11:08Speaker 4: It's basically a cash bailout to help the team get
- 11:11Speaker 4: rid of its tremendous amounts of debt. But the pole
- 11:13Speaker 4: Add family is going to continue running it. And when
- 11:15Speaker 4: the sale ended in December, when that partial sale was
- 11:19Speaker 4: finally closed out, Tom Polead took over and Tom Polladd's
- 11:23Speaker 4: first action basically was to say, we've screwed up with
- 11:26Speaker 4: the fans we have, We've screwed up with the players
- 11:29Speaker 4: in our clubhouse. We need to rebuild trust with the fans.
- 11:33Speaker 4: We did this. We had a series of missteps, and
- 11:35Speaker 4: those series of missteps and Tom laid it out for
- 11:38Speaker 4: us to Twins mess, he said, cutting the payroll after
- 11:40Speaker 4: the twenty three season in the playoff success by thirty
- 11:42Speaker 4: million dollars, that was a poor mistake. Then when the
- 11:45Speaker 4: twenty four team proved to be playoff worthy, they didn't
- 11:49Speaker 4: add it to trade deadline. There was another mistake. Then
- 11:52Speaker 4: last year's trade deadline was another misstep, and they know
- 11:55Speaker 4: that they've driven a wedge between them and fans. It's
- 11:58Speaker 4: how we got to the four point three percenters, right,
- 12:01Speaker 4: This is how there's the hope meter for the Twins
- 12:04Speaker 4: going into the season is four point three percent because
- 12:06Speaker 4: for three years it's just been bad stuff that they've
- 12:09Speaker 4: had to deal with. And Tom Pohlad decided, I'm going
- 12:12Speaker 4: to come in. I'm going to be a hands on owner.
- 12:14Speaker 4: I'm going to rebuild trust, I'm going to get us,
- 12:17Speaker 4: I'm going to do things to show the players that
- 12:20Speaker 4: ownership supports them, give them that support. One of the
- 12:23Speaker 4: first things that Tom Poulad did after talking to us
- 12:25Speaker 4: about that, and Tom Poulet has talked to the media
- 12:28Speaker 4: four times since he took over in December. That's about
- 12:32Speaker 4: three more times than previous ownership had. Really, you know,
- 12:35Speaker 4: you get the owners maybe once a year, and it
- 12:38Speaker 4: was probably about once every two years before that with
- 12:41Speaker 4: the other members of the Poli family that were running it.
- 12:44Speaker 4: But one of Tom Polad's first actions after that was
- 12:46Speaker 4: to fly to Baxley, Georgia and go and see Byron
- 12:51Speaker 4: and basically say, hey, look, I'm here for you. I
- 12:53Speaker 4: want to start this, I want to rebuild this. You're
- 12:56Speaker 4: our guy, and this is a I need you to
- 12:58Speaker 4: believe in this.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Again.
- 13:00Speaker 4: By the way, Tom poll At smart to fly direct
- 13:04Speaker 4: to Baxley. When I went in twenty twenty two during
- 13:07Speaker 4: the lockout, I flew to Atlanta and then drove the
- 13:10Speaker 4: three and a half hours. Byron is now, Yeah, Byron's
- 13:14Speaker 4: got a nice little private jet action to get back
- 13:17Speaker 4: and forth at this point because it's so far. But look,
- 13:21Speaker 4: so Tom Pole had does that right? And then Tom
- 13:23Speaker 4: Pole ad basically starts showing up in the clubhouse. He
- 13:26Speaker 4: went to spring training. He's never really been around the Twins,
- 13:28Speaker 4: even though his families owned the club since nineteen eighty four,
- 13:31Speaker 4: won the World Series in eighty seven and ninety one.
- 13:34Speaker 4: I think he had an internship with MLB for one year,
- 13:37Speaker 4: but he's been on the business side of things with
- 13:38Speaker 4: the family forever. He decided I'm going to spring training
- 13:42Speaker 4: for a month. Nobody understood why, like spring training when
- 13:47Speaker 4: you're the owner, the players don't want to be there
- 13:50Speaker 4: that month. The players are getting ready for the season.
- 13:52Speaker 4: But nobody wants to be there for that month, but
- 13:54Speaker 4: Tom went to be there and have his hands on
- 13:56Speaker 4: the process and to get to know his club, and
- 13:59Speaker 4: they reassuring people and all that's happened since then. And
- 14:03Speaker 4: I'm not gonna claim the Twins are contenders, but here
- 14:06Speaker 4: we are. We've just passed the one third mark of
- 14:08Speaker 4: the season, and beyond the first four teams in the
- 14:12Speaker 4: American League, everything else is pretty may you know, everybody's playing.
- 14:17Speaker 4: I guess you could say it's a bunch of ham
- 14:18Speaker 4: and eggers. You know, you got a bunch of teams
- 14:21Speaker 4: that are pretty mediocre. But the Twins are. They're competing
- 14:25Speaker 4: right now, right and and it's because their pitching is
- 14:28Speaker 4: grown up. And I still think that people perceived this right.
- 14:33Speaker 4: People outside perceive this as a place that is going
- 14:36Speaker 4: to continue selling. And it's gonna be hard to convince
- 14:39Speaker 4: me that Joe Ryan won't field offers. Because Joe Ryan's
- 14:42Speaker 4: value is super high, and Ryan Jeffers is a free agent,
- 14:46Speaker 4: I wouldn't be shocked. But also Tom Pole has talked
- 14:49Speaker 4: about being aggressive. Tom Pollet has talked about giving these
- 14:54Speaker 4: players and fans the team that they deserve and they want.
- 14:57Speaker 4: And I think he recognizes that this team is at
- 15:01Speaker 4: a critical point with its fan base, and regardless of
- 15:05Speaker 4: whether or not they trade some of the other guys,
- 15:08Speaker 4: I cannot see them trading Byron Buckston for prospects. So
- 15:13Speaker 4: then it comes to like, what's Atlanta to give up?
- 15:16Speaker 4: That's so exciting because we're talking about the most popular
- 15:18Speaker 4: player on the team and the most popular player for
- 15:20Speaker 4: what duff when you played with him, was there anybody
- 15:23Speaker 4: that got that lad of cheers?
- 15:24Speaker 5: Maybe Joe Mauer, right, yeah, Joe at times.
- 15:28Speaker 6: But Byron is you know, I mean all through the
- 15:30Speaker 6: miners and everything was Byron is the guy we got.
- 15:34Speaker 1: To get it. Take a little break, we will come back.
- 15:37Speaker 4: No wait, wait, hang on, hang on, hang no, let
- 15:38Speaker 4: me finish this point. I'm almost about to wrap this up.
- 15:41Speaker 4: I'm about to wrap this up. I just can't see
- 15:44Speaker 4: the Twins trading their most popular guy, Like how what
- 15:49Speaker 4: could you do?
- 15:49Speaker 5: As Minnesota?
- 15:52Speaker 4: And he has said it. Byron Buxton has said it repeatedly.
- 15:56Speaker 4: Byron Buxton knew the agents were coming to his new team,
- 16:00Speaker 4: We're coming to his agent at the All Star break
- 16:01Speaker 4: last year, and he used his platform at the All
- 16:04Speaker 4: Star Game to say I am staying in Minnesota. He
- 16:07Speaker 4: confirmed that to me a couple of days after the deadline.
- 16:10Speaker 4: I said, I heard teams were going to your agents.
- 16:13Speaker 4: He said yes. I said, did you use that platform
- 16:16Speaker 4: at the media session at the All Star Game to
- 16:18Speaker 4: say I'm a Minnesota Twin for life? Intentionally? He said yes.
- 16:21Speaker 4: He made it clear. He made it clear again after
- 16:24Speaker 4: the deadline. He made it clear. At the end of
- 16:25Speaker 4: the season. He could change his mind. There's no question
- 16:28Speaker 4: he could change his mind. He's competitive, he wants to win.
- 16:31Speaker 4: If the Twins were to sell it off, but I
- 16:34Speaker 4: don't think that they are trying to do that, and
- 16:36Speaker 4: I don't think Tom pol Ed thinks he could trade
- 16:38Speaker 4: Byron Buckson because then he will run the most popular
- 16:41Speaker 4: player out of town. And you're going to just shred
- 16:43Speaker 4: this already fragile fan base.
- 16:45Speaker 1: And just so it's left a keeps talking after the break,
- 16:50Speaker 1: you can keep talking after that.
- 16:51Speaker 4: I'm enjoying this. I'm enjoying this.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Win for another minute and a half after you said.
- 16:55Speaker 6: He's been he's been holding his breath for three days
- 16:58Speaker 6: getting ready for this.
- 16:59Speaker 1: We'll be right here.
- 17:06Speaker 9: It's getting hot out there.
- 17:07Speaker 3: People. Let's talk.
- 17:08Speaker 9: Mack Weldon fashion show real quick. AJ's got the Pima
- 17:12Speaker 9: crew neck t shirt, Froth Heeather.

- 17:22Speaker 10: It's great for summer down here in Florida. And I
- 17:24Speaker 10: got a couple of linen shirts and linen pants that
- 17:27Speaker 10: are gonna look nice when I go to Europe here
- 17:29Speaker 10: in a couple of weeks.
- 17:30Speaker 3: Very nice.

- 18:11Speaker 1: All right, Dan finish your thought.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Look, speculation is gonna continue to happen. I'm gonna even
- 18:18Speaker 4: participate in myself all July. It's gonna be a lot
- 18:21Speaker 4: of fun. It always is. Bring eyes to the sport.
- 18:24Speaker 4: It's what we do.
- 18:26Speaker 1: I understand.
- 18:26Speaker 4: I just think that, you know, I'm going to dump
- 18:29Speaker 4: some cold water on stuff when if Doctor Seuss down
- 18:32Speaker 4: there is going to keep telling, you know, doctor, I'm
- 18:35Speaker 4: gonna if we're gonna have to, we're gonna have to
- 18:39Speaker 4: bring the cold water here like this is just what
- 18:42Speaker 4: I'm gonna do.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Okay, broadcast Essentially, doctor.
- 18:47Speaker 5: I have said nothing derogatory to this point. For the record, well.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Dan I I appreciate your apology, first of all for
- 18:59Speaker 1: dragging Tyler and I into this with.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Your I was trying to with you guys, and also
- 19:03Speaker 4: I tried some diplomacy at first there.
- 19:06Speaker 6: But it is my fault at the end of the
- 19:08Speaker 6: day because I saw the clip and got a laugh,
- 19:12Speaker 6: so I sent it and it was harmless at the time.
- 19:14Speaker 6: You know, It's one of those you know, you never
- 19:16Speaker 6: could have imagined what happened down the road, but here
- 19:18Speaker 6: we are.
- 19:19Speaker 1: It's still pretty harmless, I would say, But I do
- 19:21Speaker 1: have some bad news for you, Dan, because our friends
- 19:27Speaker 1: at Matt and Oliver, Chuck and Schernoff sorry, are already
- 19:32Speaker 1: I have already made up their minds about you, and
- 19:35Speaker 1: much like Charlie Lee Brant going out of the eleventh
- 19:37Speaker 1: in game six, they have decided that you might not
- 19:40Speaker 1: be the man for the job.
- 19:42Speaker 3: But I was digging it.
- 19:43Speaker 2: They were going after us, and then you could tell
- 19:45Speaker 2: the one guy's probably the journalist. Journalist was like, let
- 19:48Speaker 2: me make sure we mentioned.
- 19:49Speaker 3: He's from Georgia. Yeah, so let me show this again
- 19:52Speaker 3: because I'll tell them where they went wrong.
- 19:53Speaker 7: Talk about Atlanta radio hosts talking about Byron Buckston being
- 19:57Speaker 7: in the outfield there. Hey, Atlanta host guy has a
- 20:01Speaker 7: no trade cause and he's a ten to five now so,
- 20:04Speaker 7: but he's.
- 20:04Speaker 3: From Georgia's gonna stop that was But he's from Georgia.
- 20:08Speaker 1: You know that, right, You know, he's.
- 20:09Speaker 2: A ten to five guy. And the one guy was
- 20:11Speaker 2: doing like a little Jim Rome. Hey, Atlanta radio host,
- 20:14Speaker 2: you're off to a good start. I like what you're doing,
- 20:16Speaker 2: but you gotta then double down on the snark instead
- 20:20Speaker 2: they did this, he is.
- 20:23Speaker 6: For hours from Atlanta.
- 20:26Speaker 8: I would definitely put that in a place in one
- 20:29Speaker 8: of the like maybe two places that I bet you
- 20:31Speaker 8: he'd consider going.
- 20:33Speaker 3: The call came, yeah, okay.
- 20:35Speaker 5: Thanks for that.
- 20:35Speaker 3: That guy is fired.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Whomember that guy is not in line with the other
- 20:38Speaker 2: two with the snark and committing to the bit that
- 20:40Speaker 2: dude's fired.
- 20:42Speaker 1: So the takeaway is that Tyler and I were committed
- 20:45Speaker 1: to the bit we're good. Dan is fired. Unfortunately Dan,
- 20:51Speaker 1: I was anyways, that job sucks.
- 20:54Speaker 4: Look, I was gonna quit. That job sucks. The boss
- 20:57Speaker 4: is terrible. That guy, that guy's in charge of hiring
- 20:59Speaker 4: a firing. So yeah, no, I tender my resignation.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Well, if you would like to support us in our
- 21:08Speaker 1: radio fight against Chuck and churn Off, you can. If
- 21:13Speaker 1: you're watching on YouTube, you can subscribe right now with
- 21:15Speaker 1: that QR code. We're on our way to five hundred subscribers.
- 21:18Speaker 1: This fight is not slowing down anytime soon. I would say,
- 21:21Speaker 1: like like Ron Gant trying to get back to first base,
- 21:23Speaker 1: it has momentum and it's gonna on its own power,
- 21:27Speaker 1: just keep going without any sort of assistance needed to
- 21:30Speaker 1: get to get further. Too far even maybe you might say, so,
- 21:35Speaker 1: we'll see what happens next week.
- 21:38Speaker 4: That's just make sure when you just when you turn
- 21:40Speaker 4: your cars on next time, just if you hear a
- 21:43Speaker 4: little weird noise with technician.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Yeah, that makes sense. Let someone else say that guy
- 21:48Speaker 1: was really mad that the other guy, Chuck was really
- 21:51Speaker 1: mad about my Georgia comment. And I honestly wasn't making
- 21:55Speaker 1: fun of the people of Georgia. It's just it's It's
- 21:58Speaker 1: the whole thing for me is every time a good
- 22:03Speaker 1: player is on a bad team, this comes up, like, well,
- 22:05Speaker 1: you know, they're from New Jersey, so they'd love to
- 22:08Speaker 1: play for the Yankees or Mets. That's all. It was
- 22:11Speaker 1: more of a comment to people in general than Georgia.
- 22:14Speaker 1: It was definitely snarky, though again, hand up, we are
- 22:18Speaker 1: going to talk about some real baseball things, and I
- 22:20Speaker 1: hope that if you don't care about any of this,
- 22:22Speaker 1: that you noticed the other topics and the time codes
- 22:24Speaker 1: down below in the description and have already moved on.
- 22:27Speaker 1: But if you stuck with us through that, you are
- 22:30Speaker 1: one of the four point three percenters for our show,
- 22:32Speaker 1: which we appreciate very much. Before we get to those
- 22:36Speaker 1: two awful twins games that happened since the last time
- 22:40Speaker 1: that we talked to you, there was some rather large
- 22:44Speaker 1: national news in baseball this week, guys, with both Major
- 22:48Speaker 1: League Baseball and the Players Union kind of presenting there
- 22:51Speaker 1: are cases here in the ongoing labor fight as they
- 22:53Speaker 1: try to maybe avoid or at least lessen what looks
- 22:57Speaker 1: like it could be a lockout in twenty twenty seven,
- 23:00Speaker 1: Dan sort of can you give us the lay of land?
- 23:01Speaker 1: What happened there where we're at.
- 23:04Speaker 4: Yeah, the owners established they want a cap, and the
- 23:06Speaker 4: owners established they would be willing to put a floor in.
- 23:10Speaker 4: The players had a floor in THEIRS, no cap in THEIRS.
- 23:13Speaker 4: The players reacted the way you would expect because they've
- 23:17Speaker 4: been fighting the idea of a cap forever. The owners
- 23:20Speaker 4: said that one way they'd do it is by taking
- 23:22Speaker 4: all of the money for local TV revenues essentially, and
- 23:27Speaker 4: that's a huge area of disparity where the Yankees and
- 23:30Speaker 4: the Dodgers have this mass. I mean, the Dodgers have
- 23:33Speaker 4: Japan's money coming in for Otani, they have a full
- 23:36Speaker 4: nother TV contract. They can just crush everyone.
- 23:39Speaker 3: And so the.
- 23:40Speaker 4: Owners basically said, we'll pool all the resources together and
- 23:44Speaker 4: make every team have more revenue to spend. It's about
- 23:49Speaker 4: what you know, both sides reacted exactly how I kind
- 23:52Speaker 4: of thought they would. This is the first offer that's
- 23:55Speaker 4: never gonna be the kind of thing that is gonna
- 23:57Speaker 4: be taken. And that's what I take it with a
- 24:01Speaker 4: grain of salt, because this is the first proposals and
- 24:03Speaker 4: this is to be a long road, and I'm more
- 24:06Speaker 4: curious to hear what you know, Tyler is a former player,
- 24:09Speaker 4: thinks about just where what the union always has thought
- 24:13Speaker 4: about the salary cap and you know everything around that.
- 24:19Speaker 6: Yeah, the big one is you kind of touched on
- 24:23Speaker 6: it the opening of the books. I think that would
- 24:27Speaker 6: make a lot of conversations change their directions, regardless of
- 24:31Speaker 6: what you know final goal was or is, because that's
- 24:35Speaker 6: the big.
- 24:35Speaker 5: Number that no one truly knows.
- 24:38Speaker 6: You know, we can make estimates and guests, you know,
- 24:40Speaker 6: all right, how many people went to games this year,
- 24:42Speaker 6: things like that, but those are like you said, you know,
- 24:45Speaker 6: the LA's, the New York's, the Seattle. So whoever's of
- 24:48Speaker 6: the world who have these bigger deals, you know, they
- 24:51Speaker 6: all it's all in the same pot and that idea.
- 24:55Speaker 6: But the floor is the one that I think it
- 24:59Speaker 6: makes the most sense, and I think everyone could get
- 25:01Speaker 6: on board with because that makes those teams then have
- 25:04Speaker 6: to do something versus just sitting there collecting checks every year.
- 25:08Speaker 6: And I think that's the one. Like I don't know why,
- 25:10Speaker 6: it's it's kind of like bills that we use in
- 25:13Speaker 6: our country for things. It's like we put all this
- 25:16Speaker 6: good stuff and then we plug this one really not
- 25:18Speaker 6: useful thing in and it's like, well, guys, we can't
- 25:21Speaker 6: do that, you know, and it stops everything.
- 25:23Speaker 5: And so it's the ceiling.
- 25:25Speaker 6: It just the cap is scary because it limits in
- 25:30Speaker 6: the eyes of the players, it limits.
- 25:32Speaker 5: The opportunity to make money, you know. I think that's
- 25:35Speaker 5: at the end of the day, that's what it does.
- 25:36Speaker 6: And you know, the other stuff, the player pool stuff
- 25:39Speaker 6: is great, you know, helping rookies. You know, the progress
- 25:43Speaker 6: that's been made has been wonderful for players. And I'm
- 25:45Speaker 6: sure any rookie right now would tell you, like, it's
- 25:47Speaker 6: wonderful having you know, they're making seven hundred and fifty
- 25:49Speaker 6: eight hundred thousand dollars h first year.
- 25:52Speaker 5: I think my first year is five fifteen maybe, you know.
- 25:56Speaker 6: And then on top of that, if you play well,
- 25:58Speaker 6: you get a bonus you know, your team, it's kickbacks.
- 26:00Speaker 6: If you play well and contribute to your team winning. Like,
- 26:03Speaker 6: it's a lot of stuff that makes sense, and it's
- 26:06Speaker 6: frustrating for fans, I know, to hear us as players,
- 26:10Speaker 6: you know, who are very fortunate arguing with billionaire ownership
- 26:15Speaker 6: groups who are obviously very fortunate. You know, it's it
- 26:19Speaker 6: can be a little off base, but you know, at
- 26:23Speaker 6: the same time, it's it's what's fair at the end
- 26:25Speaker 6: of the day, you know.
- 26:26Speaker 5: And then you look at like the NBA, it's.
- 26:28Speaker 6: Less players, they have a cap, but then those salaries
- 26:31Speaker 6: are just astronomical because there's so few people, and so
- 26:34Speaker 6: it's like we have more players and all it's it's
- 26:36Speaker 6: a logistical nightmare. But I think Bruce and all the
- 26:40Speaker 6: guys with the union, you know, they have the right ideas.
- 26:43Speaker 6: It's just getting all the owners individually, with all their
- 26:47Speaker 6: little ideas to have one central idea. I think it's
- 26:51Speaker 6: going to be the big problem because there are you know,
- 26:53Speaker 6: the woe is me within that group, who are going
- 26:57Speaker 6: to be the speed bumps that have to get over.
- 26:59Speaker 5: And you know, the good.
- 27:00Speaker 6: Thing is that it's only June, not even June, so
- 27:03Speaker 6: we have some time. But if that's going to be
- 27:06Speaker 6: what they start with in response like it's it could
- 27:09Speaker 6: take a while.
- 27:11Speaker 1: It seems like, at least if you're a Twins fan
- 27:15Speaker 1: of a salary floor is more helpful than a cap,
- 27:19Speaker 1: like yes, forcing them to spend up to a certain level,
- 27:21Speaker 1: versus saying you can't spend more than this.
- 27:25Speaker 4: Yeah, the proposal, what was the owner's like seventy like
- 27:31Speaker 4: that would be a Twins record.
- 27:32Speaker 6: Payroll, Yeah, which is like eighty.
- 27:35Speaker 4: Yeah, they're current high payrolls like one sixty two, one
- 27:40Speaker 4: sixty three, so they would with the salary floor would
- 27:44Speaker 4: be would be more money than they've ever spent. So yeah,
- 27:47Speaker 4: of course, and I'm sure it would be slowly kind
- 27:51Speaker 4: of metered in because you look at the Dodgers payroll
- 27:54Speaker 4: right now, how are you going to make the Dodgers shed,
- 27:56Speaker 4: you know, over over nine salaries right like be really difficult,
- 28:01Speaker 4: but it can't be something that's overnight. But it's just
- 28:07Speaker 4: it seemed lofty, and I know the players are going
- 28:10Speaker 4: to fight that one a lot. That's just that's my
- 28:12Speaker 4: sense from it. The salary cap has been something. I mean,
- 28:15Speaker 4: their proposal or their response to the first proposal was
- 28:18Speaker 4: we've been fighting this for thirty years. It's why the
- 28:20Speaker 4: MLPA is as strong as it is. It's considered the
- 28:25Speaker 4: best union in sports. Players are guaranteed their salaries. You
- 28:30Speaker 4: can be terrible and if you signed a two undred
- 28:33Speaker 4: million dollar deal you're getting you can be Anthony Rendon
- 28:35Speaker 4: and play. You know very little of that huge monster
- 28:40Speaker 4: contract that he got he didn't and if you're in
- 28:42Speaker 4: the NFL, there's only so much of it's guaranteed. I
- 28:45Speaker 4: just wonder how players are ever gonna give up, you know,
- 28:49Speaker 4: the idea of guaranteed money. They they're a strong union.
- 28:54Speaker 4: It's it's gonna be tough.
- 28:57Speaker 1: We'll see where this goes. Like Tyler said, a lot
- 29:00Speaker 1: of time and also not very much time before the
- 29:02Speaker 1: next season gets here, we'll see how negotiations progressed. Quick break.
- 29:06Speaker 1: We'll be right back. We'll talk about the Twins after this.

- 30:11Speaker 1: We're back. We lost one. Don't worry. He's okay. He
- 30:14Speaker 1: didn't get taken out by Atlanta radio hosts Wi.
- 30:17Speaker 5: Fi cut out. He started screaming, I don't know.
- 30:21Speaker 1: We hope to hear from him again. We are going
- 30:25Speaker 1: to talk about the twins finally. I guess we talked
- 30:26Speaker 1: about buying Byron Buckston technically at the beginning, but it
- 30:29Speaker 1: was a really bad couple of games in Chicago since
- 30:31Speaker 1: the last time we talked to you. Twins were outscored
- 30:33Speaker 1: twenty one to four two losses, ended up losing this
- 30:37Speaker 1: series to Chicago three games to one. They are now
- 30:40Speaker 1: four and three on this road trip, Tyler five and
- 30:43Speaker 1: a half back of Cleveland and the central two and
- 30:45Speaker 1: a half back now of Chicago. Pretty Much nothing went right,
- 30:49Speaker 1: but the pitching was especially glaring these last two days.
- 30:53Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, anytime those numbers are on the board,
- 30:57Speaker 6: you know, that's when you kind of look around at
- 30:59Speaker 6: the end of the game, if you're in the bullpen,
- 31:00Speaker 6: you're like, all right, I'm just kind of glad it
- 31:01Speaker 6: wouldn't meet today kind of thing. But you know, it happened,
- 31:06Speaker 6: and that's you know, like you said, still four and
- 31:08Speaker 6: three thus far. You know, so it's one. You know,
- 31:12Speaker 6: you got the positives where you can at some point.
- 31:14Speaker 6: But yeah, it wasn't great. You know, this start for
- 31:19Speaker 6: them did not go well. You know, Shelter, I think
- 31:22Speaker 6: eventioned on it. It's a tough spot to be put in,
- 31:24Speaker 6: you know, Hey, forty five bus for the game. Hey
- 31:27Speaker 6: you're starting, you know, Kendres is out with the elbow,
- 31:32Speaker 6: you know, and and then it just flat out he
- 31:34Speaker 6: never got any traction. It just never went smooth.
- 31:37Speaker 5: You know, I think you give up five or six.
- 31:40Speaker 6: Uh, you know, you got hit pretty hard at times,
- 31:42Speaker 6: and you know the bullpen kind of tried to salvage
- 31:45Speaker 6: some of it. But you know, just at that point,
- 31:47Speaker 6: once you get out to a big league like that
- 31:49Speaker 6: team gets momentum, they can feel it. It's just hard
- 31:51Speaker 6: to dig yourself out, and you know, it didn't go well.
- 31:54Speaker 6: And hopefully they can, you know, get to Pittsburgh and
- 31:57Speaker 6: change the scenery and play a team they haven't probably
- 32:00Speaker 6: seen except maybe once or twice at spring and you know,
- 32:03Speaker 6: go go in at least one or two more games
- 32:05Speaker 6: to get home with the what that would be a
- 32:07Speaker 6: split for the road? How many games they played seven
- 32:09Speaker 6: to ten games on the road, right, so it could
- 32:12Speaker 6: go home five and five at least, that'd be big.
- 32:14Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, we talked a week ago about as
- 32:18Speaker 1: we previewed this road trip, about coming home with a
- 32:21Speaker 1: winning road trip would be a nice statement heading into
- 32:24Speaker 1: the you know, the key two months ahead of the
- 32:26Speaker 1: trade deadline. Even five and five is certainly not something
- 32:29Speaker 1: to hit the ejectory's seat over. You mentioned, Kenny, right,
- 32:57Speaker 1: here's the latest article. Sorry about that technical blip from
- 33:00Speaker 1: Dan Hayes on the athletic Kendrey Rojas with a left
- 33:04Speaker 1: elbow injury. He is out. The Twins have called up
- 33:07Speaker 1: Cody Thunderbert and Cody Lawson, and Travis Adams was optioned
- 33:14Speaker 1: back to the minors, so some movement there around around
- 33:17Speaker 1: the bullpen. Obviously, Simmon Wood Richardson was forced into to
- 33:22Speaker 1: short or emergency duty, I should say, in the finale
- 33:25Speaker 1: against Chicago. So hard to really know what to make
- 33:28Speaker 1: of just a couple of games where the Twins really
- 33:31Speaker 1: weren't right, but nevertheless disappointing a couple of losses. But
- 33:34Speaker 1: they head down to Pittsburgh the Derek Shelton Revenge Series,
- 33:38Speaker 1: the team he used to manage, and the Pirates are
- 33:42Speaker 1: are a very hard luck last place team in the
- 33:46Speaker 1: NL Central. They're twenty nine and twenty eight, but every
- 33:49Speaker 1: team in the NL Central is over five hundred and
- 33:52Speaker 1: they are last among them. But a tough team for sure,
- 33:55Speaker 1: and to your tyler, like, even getting one win there
- 33:59Speaker 1: gets the Twins home five and five and pretty successful
- 34:02Speaker 1: ten days overall.
- 34:04Speaker 6: Yeah, trying to limp in, you know, at least get
- 34:06Speaker 6: one more, you know, if you can sneak one in there,
- 34:09Speaker 6: you know, that's the thing. Other than the last two
- 34:11Speaker 6: in Chicago, the games have been well played, close games,
- 34:15Speaker 6: so you squeak one out here or there, you know,
- 34:17Speaker 6: somehow get a second one in. I don't know who's
- 34:19Speaker 6: lined up to start for the Pirates and all those
- 34:21Speaker 6: games obviously, you know, match up with schemes wouldn't be ideal,
- 34:27Speaker 6: you know, but it's one you just got to shake
- 34:29Speaker 6: yesterday off. You know, it's day game to Pittsburgh. You know,
- 34:33Speaker 6: go have some dinner somewhere maybe, you know, take your
- 34:35Speaker 6: mind off of the game for a little bit, you know,
- 34:38Speaker 6: and hopefully come out tonight guns blazon and make a
- 34:42Speaker 6: statement early.
- 34:42Speaker 5: That's a big thing in a series.
- 34:44Speaker 6: You know, you come in first inning of the first
- 34:46Speaker 6: game and you kind of pop somebody in the mouth.
- 34:48Speaker 6: You know, they take notice and it put them on
- 34:50Speaker 6: guard and you know, make somebody uncomfortable.
- 34:52Speaker 2: You know.
- 34:53Speaker 6: It's it's been a little bit of everybody trying to
- 34:55Speaker 6: contribute at times, and that's got to continue.
- 34:58Speaker 5: That's the big thing.
- 34:59Speaker 6: It's got to be somebody each day, you know, who
- 35:02Speaker 6: wants to be the hero to in whatever moment presents
- 35:06Speaker 6: itself and you know, obviously you always want Byron to
- 35:09Speaker 6: do his thing and guys, but uh, you know, it's one.
- 35:13Speaker 6: It's Pittsburgh's a fun place to play. There'll be some
- 35:15Speaker 6: good energy in the park. I'm sure Friday night, you know,
- 35:18Speaker 6: it'll be a good time. And like that Chelte, I'm
- 35:21Speaker 6: sure he's he's gonna want to win more, maybe a
- 35:25Speaker 6: little bit more than he would normally want to win
- 35:26Speaker 6: a game, so you know it could make for some
- 35:29Speaker 6: some fun. I'm sure we have some good quotes for
- 35:31Speaker 6: us after you know, today's.
- 35:33Speaker 5: Game, or even before the game. But you know it'll
- 35:36Speaker 5: be it'll be a good one to watch.
- 35:38Speaker 1: The Twins continue to get blessed by missing star pitchers.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Paul Skeans pitched last night against the Cubs, so it's
- 35:45Speaker 1: not in however, it's it's not really ever easy against
- 35:48Speaker 1: the Pirates. But Friday Jared Jones against Taj Bradley. Saturday
- 35:53Speaker 1: is Mitch Keller and against Bailey Over Keller having a
- 35:57Speaker 1: strong year three six, four r A and then and
- 36:01Speaker 1: Braxton Ashcraft Sunday afternoon even stronger with a team seven
- 36:05Speaker 1: to five this year. That is a that is a
- 36:08Speaker 1: name that sounds like one of my t ball kids.
- 36:09Speaker 1: We were officially at that point where, yes, these these
- 36:12Speaker 1: names that I associate with the next generation are now
- 36:16Speaker 1: just adults playing.
- 36:17Speaker 6: That is Yeah, the mouth the mouthful kids names are
- 36:21Speaker 6: definitely a thing.
- 36:22Speaker 5: It's it's something they all throw fuel.
- 36:26Speaker 6: I'm sure the kids on the teams they're all they're
- 36:28Speaker 6: all throwing ninety eight and at six years old, you know,
- 36:31Speaker 6: it's a great time.
- 36:32Speaker 1: Zebbie Matthews gets the game on Sunday for the Twins,
- 36:37Speaker 1: just to wrap up that starting pitching rundown. And then
- 36:40Speaker 1: the Twins are off Monday, first time they've been off
- 36:42Speaker 1: in a minute. And then they oh, wait a minute,
- 36:45Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I'm looking at.
- 36:47Speaker 6: The pirates say they're in the seventeen straight heater.
- 36:50Speaker 1: We spend all our creative energy on the on the
- 36:53Speaker 1: first part of this show today. As you can tell, uh,
- 36:55Speaker 1: they're back home. White Sox rematch starting Monday, June first.
- 37:00Speaker 1: It's a seven game homestand Chicago and then Kansas City
