- 0:00You're listening to the Play Therapy Podcast with Dr. Brenna Hicks,
- 0:04your source for centered and focused play therapy coaching.
- 0:08Hi,
- 0:08I'm Dr. Brenna Hicks,
- 0:09The Kid Counselor.
- 0:11This is the Play Therapy Podcast where you get
- 0:13a master class in child-centered play therapy
- 0:15and practical support and application for your
- 0:17work with children and their families.
- 0:19Today I wanna talk about something that has been coming up again and again,
- 0:23specifically when I've been doing live events and
- 0:26meeting with therapists all over the country.
- 0:29And the frustration
- 0:31that we feel
- 0:32when we feel like we have inadequately been prepared.
- 0:36To do this work.
- 0:38And so the standard,
- 0:39the common refrain is,
- 0:41I'm the only CCPT in my office.
- 0:43I'm the only CCPT in my office.
- 0:44I'm the only one that sees kids.
- 0:47I
- 0:47am new,
- 0:48fresh out of grad school,
- 0:49and so they assigned me all of the kids that no one else wants to work with.
- 0:54I didn't learn anything about working with kids in grad school.
- 0:57I didn't even take a play therapy course
- 0:59when I was in my training programs.
- 1:01And so what we're doing is
- 1:03we're putting
- 1:05therapists out into the world.
- 1:07That are serving a population that they're completely unprepared to serve.
- 1:12And the frustration mounts because
- 1:15we're left to figure it out on our own.
- 1:18So what ends up happening is we start looking for podcasts,
- 1:21probably how you found this.
- 1:23You start looking for trainings,
- 1:26you start looking for communities,
- 1:29you start going on social media and seeing what groups exist.
- 1:33You start reading books
- 1:34and going to webinars and conferences.
- 1:38And all of those things can be part of
- 1:41the process
- 1:42toward mastery.
- 1:44But
- 1:45I'm not going to reinvent something that Landreth has very clearly laid out for us.
- 1:51Landreth more than 20 years ago
- 1:54stressed again and again
- 1:56that the only way for a CCPT
- 1:59to achieve mastery is through video review.
- 2:03So
- 2:03I say that often,
- 2:05but it's not my concept.
- 2:07It's straight out of Landreth training and why?
- 2:10Because
- 2:11it's been proven that that is the way that we grow.
- 2:15If you don't have someone watching videos
- 2:18of your sessions.
- 2:20You're spinning your wheels,
- 2:22and I suspect many of you feel that way.
- 2:25I talked to someone this weekend at the conference.
- 2:28She came up in tears
- 2:30and said,
- 2:32You used the word clunky,
- 2:34and this is exactly how I feel.
- 2:36This is exactly what describes what I've experienced,
- 2:39so much so that I've thought about not even doing this anymore,
- 2:43and she's not even licensed yet.
- 2:45Newly out of grad school,
- 2:47thrust into therapy with children
- 2:49and said,
- 2:50I'm not even sure that this is what I want to do.
- 2:54Why are we experiencing these lows?
- 2:56Why do we feel so defeated and why are we so exhausted and why are we doubting so much?
- 3:01And why is there so much,
- 3:02so much mistrust
- 3:04in the efficacy of what we're doing?
- 3:06Because we're piecemealing it together
- 3:09and because we don't have anyone coming alongside us
- 3:12and watching
- 3:13videos.
- 3:14To mentor us
- 3:16and to coach us
- 3:18and this isn't my idea like I said I I'm not
- 3:20going to reinvent something this is straight out of Landreth's mouth
- 3:24that
- 3:24when you have someone watch a video
- 3:27of your play session
- 3:29you get real world practical
- 3:32support and experience
- 3:34of knowing what to do.
- 3:37Differently,
- 3:38knowing what you're doing adherently
- 3:40and things that you can constantly be thinking
- 3:43about in the way of growth and mastery.
- 3:46This is crucial
- 3:48for our field,
- 3:49especially as child-centered play therapists.
- 3:51It's the way I was trained.
- 3:53It's the way UNT used to train people.
- 3:55I'm not sure if they're still doing that,
- 3:57but
- 3:58Jennifer Baggerley trained with video review at UNT.
- 4:01She came to USF and trained me with video review,
- 4:04and I trained my therapist with video review.
- 4:07That is the path toward mastery.
- 4:10And we get so frustrated and defeated
- 4:13and we second guess and we question and we feel
- 4:16so much doubt
- 4:18and so much mistrust
- 4:19it's really hard to be adherent to the model
- 4:22when
- 4:23you're not sure what you're supposed to be doing.
- 4:26And I talked about this at the conference over the weekend.
- 4:30What
- 4:31does it communicate
- 4:33to the world?
- 4:35When
- 4:36the newest people out of grad school that are pre-licensed
- 4:40are given kids.
- 4:43What,
- 4:44what does that make you think about?
- 4:46How does that make you feel?
- 4:48What are we doing?
- 4:51When
- 4:51we assume
- 4:52that kids
- 4:54don't need
- 4:55highly trained therapists.
- 4:57That kids don't need therapists that are grounded in the theory
- 5:01and licensed and knowledgeable about how to work with them.
- 5:05We're essentially implying that they don't deserve anything more
- 5:09than the lowest person on the totem pole.
- 5:12And that's what I'm trying to change.
- 5:14First of all,
- 5:14the,
- 5:15the whole implication that,
- 5:16that,
- 5:16that's where kids rank,
- 5:18that's so frustrating.
- 5:20Someone actually yelled out at the conference,
- 5:21it's wrong,
- 5:22and I completely agree with that.
- 5:24But beyond that,
- 5:26so many of us stumble into working with kids or
- 5:30we are given children and we're completely unprepared for it.
- 5:34So why am I talking about this?
- 5:35Because
- 5:36if this describes you even a little bit,
- 5:39if you have never had someone watch one of your videos,
- 5:42if you've never even recorded one of your sessions.
- 5:46You can always watch them yourself,
- 5:48but that is only a partial piece of the puzzle as well.
- 5:51If you
- 5:52do not have someone actively reviewing videos with you
- 5:56and giving you in real time,
- 5:58you and a child in a playroom feedback as a mentor,
- 6:02as a coach.
- 6:04If you don't have that,
- 6:05you need it.
- 6:07And
- 6:07that's why I have coaching programs.
- 6:10The hallmark of my coaching program
- 6:12is video review.
- 6:14All my graduates will attest to how beneficial
- 6:17video review has been and was for them.
- 6:20Many of them still review their own videos because
- 6:23they realize how valuable it is.
- 6:25And from my awareness,
- 6:27if you,
- 6:28if you know of another one,
- 6:29please reach out and let me know.
- 6:31As far as I know,
- 6:32there's no other coaching program for child-centered play therapy
- 6:35like this
- 6:36that provides you with video review.
- 6:39And the reason why we do it is because it's the path toward mastery.
- 6:43Landreth said it.
- 6:44I've seen it happen.
- 6:46And if you are in that place where you're like,
- 6:49gosh,
- 6:49I just don't know what I'm doing and I don't know what I'm doing and
- 6:50I don't even know how to fix what I don't know that I should be fixing
- 6:54and I have no frame of reference and I have no support and I'm the only CCPT
- 6:59my supervisor has no idea about this model and every time I bring a case up
- 7:03they either say,
- 7:04yeah,
- 7:04sounds like you've got it figured out or they tell me to do something directive.
- 7:08These are the stories that I hear all the time.
- 7:11We are
- 7:12failing.
- 7:14As a field
- 7:16to support therapists working with children,
- 7:18especially in child-centered play therapy,
- 7:21so
- 7:21you do not have to suffer,
- 7:23you do not have to question,
- 7:24you don't have to second guess.
- 7:26You certainly don't have to think about leaving the field.
- 7:30If you
- 7:31are gripped by child-centered play therapy and you
- 7:34know it is what you're meant to do.
- 7:36You just need a mentor and a coach to come alongside you
- 7:40and help you believe that yourself,
- 7:42that you are capable,
- 7:44that you can be confident,
- 7:45that you can be competent.
- 7:47That's what video review provides for you
- 7:50because over time
- 7:51you start to go,
- 7:52OK,
- 7:53I,
- 7:54I believe in myself now.
- 7:55I trust this process now.
- 7:57I know how to handle these things that come up in sessions
- 8:01and then as all of those things start to converge.
- 8:04You're able to absolutely trust this model and trust the process.
- 8:09So I hope that encourages you.
- 8:11I hope that you do not let defeat and doubt and frustration get in the way of this work.
- 8:17If you need support.
- 8:19Get in a coaching program.
- 8:21We have openings right now.
- 8:23Uh,
- 8:23this isn't a sales pitch.
- 8:24This is a support scenario.
- 8:26If you are needing someone to come alongside you
- 8:29because you can go to trainings all day long,
- 8:31that's been the bent lately
- 8:33for CCPTs.
- 8:35We go to conferences,
- 8:36we go to conferences,
- 8:36we go to workshops,
- 8:37and I know that's ironic because I just had a conference,
- 8:39but
- 8:40training
- 8:41kind of lives as one component,
- 8:43one part
- 8:44of the whole.
- 8:46Coaching is something completely different.
- 8:49Training gives you all kinds of information.
- 8:51It's hard to go home after you're on the mountaintop high of an event.
- 8:55It's hard to go home and actually implement what you learned.
- 8:59The implementation and the accountability of the implementation and the
- 9:01accountability of the implementation and the tweaking of the implementation
- 9:06comes from mentorship and coaching.
- 9:09The person that spoke at the event
- 9:11goes back to where they live and you go back to your practice,
- 9:14and that was the end of the relationship.
- 9:16Coaching and mentoring
- 9:18is over the course of a very long stretch of time.
- 9:21And mastery is achieved through that relationship.
- 9:24So please do not suffer.
- 9:26Please do not feel like this is too hard to do on your own.
- 9:30Get in a group,
- 9:31get in community,
- 9:33have someone come alongside and mentor and coach you.
- 9:36It changes everything.
- 9:38And my graduates
- 9:40will attest to the value
- 9:42of the time spent watching videos,
- 9:45and this is the program that gives you access to that.
- 9:48So
- 9:48I hope that you will consider
- 9:51how you can start feeling more confident and competent
- 9:55and maybe for some of you that's through a coaching program.
- 9:59Maybe it's through watching your own videos.
- 10:01Maybe it's through getting in the Collective so that you have a community of CCPTs.
- 10:06Don't walk this journey alone and certainly
- 10:09don't let the loneliness and the isolation
- 10:11cause you to doubt why you're doing this in the first place.
- 10:15We have an entire world full of CCPTs
- 10:18that need each other,
- 10:20and we are all working to be the best child-centered play therapist that we can be.
- 10:25That's the goal.
- 10:26And for some of you,
- 10:27the way that you can get there
- 10:29is to get coached and,
- 10:30and have your videos watched.
- 10:32So
- 10:32please consider the power of what Landreth said 20 plus years ago.
- 10:37Video review is the path to mastery.
- 10:41Don't let that land on deaf ears
- 10:43and just keep doing what you're doing.
- 10:45This is one of those defining moments for some of you
- 10:48where you say,
- 10:48I'm never going to get to be the CCPT that I wanna be
- 10:53unless I make this change,
- 10:54unless I take this step.
- 10:56This might be the moment that changes the trajectory of your career,
- 11:01and I hope that you feel encouraged and ready
- 11:03to take that step.
- 11:04It's that big of a difference on the other side.
- 11:07I love you.
- 11:08We'll talk again soon.
- 11:09Bye.
