- 0:25There's a link in the show notes Starship testing is advancing at
- 0:28Starbase and now SpaceX is eyeing a possible third test
- 0:32flight in March pending successful pre flight tests and
- 0:36also engineer approvals. Now recent activities including
- 0:39the delivery of crucial components for the Rockets
- 0:42flight termination system or the FTS signal this process.
- 0:46Now the FTS is essential for safely aborting the flight if
- 0:50anomalies occur. Now the installation of the FTS,
- 0:53which is a standard safety feature for large rockets,
- 0:56involves placing explosives on the rocket to enable its
- 0:59destruction mid air if necessary.
- 1:01Now these systems are installed closer to the launch date due to
- 1:05their limited lifespan. Now, the movement of the second
- 1:08stage Starship to the test pad in Boca Chica hints at the
- 1:11preparation for this upcoming test flight.
- 1:14Now the test pad known for conducting static fire tests,
- 1:17might soon witness such a test of the starship's second stage.
- 1:20Now there might be another static fire and static fire
- 1:22tests are critical for assessing the rocket's readiness for
- 1:25launch. Now the Super heavy booster,
- 1:28which is the bottom part of the Starship has been moved back
- 1:31into the High Bay. It utilizes 33 Raptor engines
- 1:35which are designed for atmospheric conditions.
- 1:37The second stage, the Starship, is equipped with engines
- 1:40optimized for the vacuum of space.
- 1:42Now, a new launch site for Starship is being considered to
- 1:46support Elon Musk's ambition to increase the launch frequency of
- 1:50the Mars bound rocket. The proposed site at Cape
- 1:53Canaveral, FL is part of Spacex's plans to establish a
- 1:56global network of launchpads for interplanetary travel and
- 2:00eventually people living on Mars.
- 2:03Now Starship, which is about 120 meters tall when fully
- 2:06assembled, is the largest rocket ever built, capable of
- 2:09delivering about 100,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit.
- 2:13Its development and launches are currently based at Starbase
- 2:16Facility in Boca Chica, Texas, but the proposal for the new
- 2:19launch site at Cape Canaveral involves taking over SLC 37
- 2:24launchpad, which is a site with historic significance from the
- 2:261960s used for the Saturn One and 1B rockets.
- 2:31X plans to adapt this site for Starship super heavy launching
- 2:35and landing operation. Now.
- 2:37Additionally, plans are underway for another Starship launchpad
- 2:39at the Starbase facility, and Elon Musk confirmed the
- 2:43development of a new launch tower equipped with robot
- 2:46chopsticks aimed at catching the booster rocket post launch,
- 2:49highlighting the importance of having multiple launch towers
- 2:52for continuous operations in Texas and in Florida now in
- 2:572021. Now all the way back in 2021,
- 3:00Elon Musk announced plans to repurpose diffused oil rigs into
- 3:04Starship launch platforms, naming them after Mars Moons,
- 3:07Damos, and Phobos. They've since decommissioned
- 3:10these platforms and now they're focusing on land based launches.
- 3:15The upcoming third major Starship launch is planned to be
- 3:18an uncrewed flight from Texas to Hawaii, completing a 90 minute
- 3:23journey around the Earth. This follows two previous
- 3:26attempts that ended unsuccessfully shortly after
- 3:28takeoff, with no confirmation date yet for the third attempt.
- 3:32Now also, let's step back a little bit to the FTS.
- 3:35It's a critical component installed on both the booster
- 3:38and the spacecraft. Now during IFT One they use the
- 3:41FTS, the flight Termination system to blow up the booster
- 3:45and also the ship and this is due to the stages not separating
- 3:51and power loss on the engine and then it led to the destruction
- 3:54of the rocket. Now the second test flight saw
- 3:57improvements though was successful.
- 3:59Detonation of the first stages FTS after separation it was
- 4:02during the kickback burn at the 2nd stages.
- 4:04FTS also function as intended during its coast phase, although
- 4:09SpaceX has been reserved about the details of that part of the
- 4:12test. Just recently, heavy duty
- 4:14explosives or for the FTS have been sent to Starbase.
- 4:18These deliveries indicate the ongoing operations for the next
- 4:21test flight, and it shows that they will be launching somewhat
- 4:25soon. The ongoing preparations for the
- 4:28Starship's third test flight, including the installation of
- 4:30the FTS, static fire tests, stacking, unstacking, moving the
- 4:35booster back to the Bay, and also moving the ship off to the
- 4:40pad. It's a critical step.
- 4:42All these are critical steps towards the next launch, IFT 3
- 4:46of Starship, as part of Spacex's broader efforts to advance human
- 4:50civilization to become a multi planet species.
