- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays like
- 0:13today. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:16the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:21Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:23OK, I've definitely come down with Annabelle's sickness.
- 0:27I didn't want to leave you guys hanging, but the stories that I
- 0:29have today for the most part are like updates because I just
- 0:32needed something easy and quick. I'm not feeling the best, I'm
- 0:36not feeling the worst. So I'm hoping that if I can just
- 0:38like rest all weekend, I will nip this in the bud.
- 0:41So let's get into the stories for today.
- 0:44Oh, actually before I start, our newsletter went out this morning
- 0:47with your opinions in it. So go subscribe.
- 0:50The link is always in the show notes.
- 0:52Go subscribe to keep scrolling for our newsletter and you guys
- 0:55can see which opinions we use. OK?
- 0:58The first story that I have for you guys today is that elf
- 1:00Cosmetics has addressed the backlash around their Matt Rife
- 1:05campaign in both an Instagram statement and also in a
- 1:08statement to the business of fashion.
- 1:10OK, so this is what they put on Instagram.
- 1:12You know us, we're always listening and we've heard you.
- 1:15This campaign aimed to humorously spotlight beauty and
- 1:18justice. We understand we missed the mark
- 1:21with people we care about in our elf community.
- 1:23While Alfino and Charms, which was like the the name of the
- 1:27fake law firm that was in the campaign closes today, will
- 1:31continue to make the case against overpriced beauty.
- 1:34OK. So a lot of people have noted
- 1:35this isn't necessarily an apology.
- 1:38I mean, they said they missed the mark with the people that
- 1:40they care about in their community.
- 1:41But you know, they didn't really.
- 1:43They still kind of like somewhat doubled down, OK.
- 1:45And then their global Chief Marketing officer, Corey
- 1:48Marshasato said this to the business of fashion.
- 1:51We are very much known for operating in real time.
- 1:54That's what it means to be in the cultural zeitgeist.
- 1:57So we're not looking in the rearview mirror when we're
- 2:00operating the real time marketing machine, OK.
- 2:03So I would argue that being in the cultural zeitgeist,
- 2:07operating that way also includes understanding what has happened
- 2:12around, in this case, the ambassadors that you're choosing
- 2:16to promote your brand that you're paying presumably tons of
- 2:20money to and promoting to your customer base.
- 2:23That's part of being part of the cultural zeitgeist is
- 2:25understanding what is happening in the conversations around
- 2:29those figures that you're choosing to represent your brand
- 2:31and how that fits in to your customer base and how they might
- 2:35interpret that and how the Internet is going to react to
- 2:37things. Say this all the time, but like
- 2:39This is why brands need like genuinely like chronically
- 2:43online consultants. Like if you are going to be
- 2:47running big campaigns like this, you need people who are like
- 2:50tapped in to the progressive online zeitgeist to understand
- 2:54how your marketing campaigns and activations like this are going
- 2:58to land. You do need to look in the
- 3:00rearview mirror, like you need to understand the decisions that
- 3:03you're making in the cultural context that they exist in.
- 3:06And I would argue that that is being in the the cultural
- 3:08zeitgeist. So I think this statement makes
- 3:10no sense. Saying that you operate in the
- 3:12cultural zeitgeist, but saying so you don't look in the
- 3:14rearview mirror in terms of understanding the context in
- 3:17which your decisions are being made are two statements that
- 3:20essentially cancel each other out, in my opinion.
- 3:22OK, the next way that I have for you guys is that sweet Laurens
- 3:26has gone viral for a quote UN quote accidental TikTok name
- 3:31change. So healthy cookie brand Sweet
- 3:33Laurens went viral this week after their social intern Social
- 3:37intern. Presently it changed the account
- 3:40name to their own name, Ryan, allegedly.
- 3:43OK, we have no idea if this was actually planned.
- 3:45I mean, I'm going to say it probably was, I think if you are
- 3:49genuinely working in social, like you get an OK, they this is
- 3:52what they claim. So they say that they were
- 3:54trying to log into another TikTok account.
- 3:57So when you're on the TikTok like account page, right, you
- 3:59can click like the down button and you can go to different
- 4:01profiles. So they claim that they were
- 4:03trying to log into, I guess their personal profile Ryan and
- 4:07they typed in Ryan and then it changed the name of the brand
- 4:10account and you can't change those names back after seven
- 4:13days. I have changed TikTok account
- 4:15names multiple times. When you do that, it gives you,
- 4:18you know, like a pop up button that says, Are you sure you want
- 4:20to change the name? You will not be able to change
- 4:22it back or change it to something different for seven
- 4:24days. So do I think this happened
- 4:28accidentally? No, I don't.
- 4:30But this is an interesting case study and kind of like this like
- 4:33faux marketing faux pas where the brand is saying like, look
- 4:36at us like we're so cool and like we just lent in.
- 4:39So they're claiming this happened.
- 4:40They posted messages. Ryan, the social intern posted
- 4:45text messages that were allegedly between themselves and
- 4:48their boss saying, I was just trying to log into a TikTok
- 4:51account and I was adding my name and it somehow switched the
- 4:54sweet Lawrence TikTok name to Ryan and I can't change it for
- 4:56seven days. I don't know what to do.
- 4:58Freaking out. I just submitted a form to
- 5:00TikTok and now the brand gets to be like, look, we lent into
- 5:03this. So they basically allowed Ryan,
- 5:05allowed Ryan to post about this on TikTok.
- 5:08They changed the names of some of their cookies online to say
- 5:12Ryan on their website, which is really funny.
- 5:14And they also made fake merch with the name Ryan on it.
- 5:17So here are some of the comments.
- 5:18Just bought some Sweet Laurens today at the store after seeing
- 5:21Ryan's earlier videos. To be honest, maybe you did it
- 5:24on accident but if you did it on purpose, this is a genius
- 5:27marketing strategy. This is how I found the Sweet
- 5:30Laurens TikTok and learns you have puff pastry which I
- 5:32absolutely will be buying so it worked out.
- 5:35Still a good marketing strategy because I was curious on what
- 5:37the brand was and scrolled through your page.
- 5:39OK so their sales apparently spiked after this and they
- 5:43gained over 10,000 followers in just a few days which is pretty
- 5:46impressive. Like the brand only had 35, 1000
- 5:48followers when this all started. So to get 10,000 followers from
- 5:5135 is quite good. So the reason why I wanted to
- 5:54talk about this, aside from like it's obviously quite funny is a
- 5:57lot of social media managers are on LinkedIn going on about this
- 6:01whole saga. And the main kind of theme
- 6:04around, like, why this worked out and why this has been a
- 6:07success is people saying that this humanized the brand, which
- 6:12led people to buy their product. The brand already had a very
- 6:16strong association with the founder, whose name is Lauren.
- 6:20There's a full story around this brand.
- 6:22It's related to her cancer journey.
- 6:24You know, she made these cookies and these recipes from scratch
- 6:27at home with healthy ingredients.
- 6:29Like there is an entire brand story around Sweet Lauren's
- 6:33already. This brand was already very
- 6:35humanized. It's quite literally named after
- 6:37a human. That is not why people bought
- 6:39these cookies. The reason why their sales went
- 6:42up is because everyone likes to feel in on the joke.
- 6:47There is nothing more exciting to TikTok users to Gen.
- 6:51Z than referential humor, right? And being kind of on the inside
- 6:55of an in joke. It's fun to interact with the
- 6:58brand right now because that means that you are in on what's
- 7:02happening. And not a lot of people yet are
- 7:04in on what happened here, right? It's like relatively viral, but
- 7:08it's not like they gained millions of followers.
- 7:10So it's like this fun inside joke that people get to partake
- 7:13in and get to show their support of and that is why their sales
- 7:16spiked. OK guys.
- 7:17And the last story that I have for you, this is such good news.
- 7:21The lawsuit against the Sylvanian drama TikTok account
- 7:25has been dropped. So this is directly from Dexter
- 7:28to quote. On August 9th, court documents
- 7:30revealed that Epoch voluntarily dismissed the case without
- 7:33prejudice, with each party to bear its own cost, expenses and
- 7:36attorneys fees. No settlement details have been
- 7:39disclosed following the news. The creator returned to
- 7:42Instagram for the first time since January, telling fans she
- 7:45would be changing the accounts name and profile picture on
- 7:47August 19th. This is what Thea, who runs the
- 7:50account, wrote. Hi guys, on the 19th of August I
- 7:53will be changing the name and profile picture of this account.
- 7:55I'm not sure what to change it to yet so please let me know if
- 7:58you have any suggestions. I'm so happy they dropped the
- 8:00lawsuit. I understand why it was an
- 8:04issue. Like, I get that if she wasn't
- 8:06doing commercial opportunities, like if she wasn't using their
- 8:09dolls, their IP to generate her own revenue through like brand
- 8:14partnerships with Netflix and like all of these huge
- 8:17companies, I understand that this maybe wouldn't have come to
- 8:21this, you know, maybe she wouldn't have ended up being
- 8:24sued. It is really unfortunate that
- 8:26she's going to have to change the name, possibly take away all
- 8:28the content. Like, I'm not really sure, but I
- 8:30am so glad that the lawsuit was dropped.
- 8:33And I have to think that possibly the backlash, like
- 8:36there was no indication in the news that I could find, but I
- 8:39have to imagine that the backlash hopefully, you know,
- 8:41from TikTok users and just the Internet in general really
- 8:44helped that. Anyways, guys, that's it for me
- 8:46to scroll today. Sorry that it was so short.
- 8:49You know, usually I have a bit more opinion, but thank you so
- 8:53much for listening. Please remember to rate, review
