- Leslye Headland: Dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun Kate: Ha ha ha. Leslye Headland: dun I texted both of you because my daughter we we play this game where we're like a monster who's trying to, you know, get her. And sometimes we're a shark. And so we were doing like dun dun. And she got so into it that finally Miriam: Yeah. Leslye Headland: we just played the song for her and she loves it. Kate: Jaws theme Leslye Headland: she loves the Jaws theme song. She loves it. Loves looking at the picture on Spotify. She's like, can I see the picture? I'm like, do you want me to play Jaws? And she's like, yes. And I'm like, yeah. And she and she goes, it's not scary. She's obsessed with it. Miriam: I don't know. Leslye Headland: Welcome to How Have You Not Seen This, a podcast about crimes against cinema. Where one of the three of us confesses that there is an iconic movie we have never seen. And the other two ask the obvious question: How have you? Miriam: How have you not seen this? Kate: I didn't participate in that one, but I can't for it. Leslye Headland: Miriam, that was I wish we'd known that that's what you wanted to do, Miriam. Kate: I don't know. I didn't know. Miriam: I thought that's how we did it. Leslye Headland: We 100% did not do that. The format is simple. There's a confession, an interrogation, atonement, and absolution. My name is Leslye Miriam: My name's Miriam. Kate: I'm Kate. Leslye Headland: we've been shaming each other for 30 years. We know each other's secrets. Miriam: Mm-hmm. Leslye Headland: We know that I will never be on time to anything. It doesn't matter. we n we know that I was Kate: You were close today, but late so late. Leslye Headland: very close today, but still didn't make it. Miriam: Mm-hmm. Leslye Headland: we all know that Miriam works harder Miriam: I Leslye Headland: than the rest of us. Miriam: mean occasionally. Kate: Also true. Miriam: Occasionally. Leslye Headland: That's correct. And Kate is, as my wife put it once, your smartest friend. Miriam: I knew Kate: I think that's a compliment for me Miriam: Mm-hmm. Kate: and not an insult for you, Leslye Headland: Today we are discussing a movie that proves my point that as long as you have a good Miriam: Yeah. Leslye Headland: theme song, it kinda doesn't matter what happens after that. It's time, Miriam: Yeah. Leslye Headland: Miriam, for you to confess what movie you have not seen. Miriam: I am sad to say I have never seen Jaws. one, two, three, four, or five. Or how many? Yeah. Okay. Leslye Headland: Okay, that's good to know. We are gonna focus on the original Jaws for now. so Kate and I obviously have questions. Kate, what Miriam: Yeah. Leslye Headland: is your first question in response to this? Shocking Kate: you I think as a avid TV watcher, like this is a Miriam: Yeah. Kate: movie that was that's on TV all the time and was when we were kids growing up. How Miriam: You know Yeah. Kate: did you how did you miss it? Or did you skip over it? Like you got to it and you're like I'm not doing Jaws. Miriam: gosh, guys. I know I feel bad about this one. Like I do. I feel bad about it. it seems like I was so close. I just I think I love a vacation destination, so maybe deep down I was scared to watch it because I love swimming in the ocean and I couldn't handle it. That's what I think happened. Maybe. Possibly. Leslye Headland: Okay. Okay. Do you Miriam: Got it. Leslye Headland: know what it's about? Do you know what Jaws is about? Miriam: Well now, here's the funny thing. I'm pretty sure I've seen clips of the Jaws documentary. I know that the the shark Kate: As one does. Yes. Miriam: I I'm like I know that the shark was, a machine, right? Like it was like an animatronic. And I know I Leslye Headland: Yes, it was. Yeah. Miriam: know there was like, we were gonna need a bigger boat. I know that there's a boat involved. Like I I get it. Kate: There is a boat. Miriam: On some levels I do understand what this movie is about. It's about summertime and sharks murdering people off the coast of Long Island. It's about the human anti-shark agenda. Leslye Headland: Okay, okay. So So you believe this is a movie about about the anti shark agenda, the American, I'm assuming, anti shark agenda. Miriam: Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Leslye Headland: Do you know who's in the movie? Miriam: I know it was directed by the great Steven Spielberg. I Leslye Headland: Yeah, excellent. Miriam: wanna say Richard Dreyfuss and you know, honestly, I don't know who else is in this movie. Leslye Headland: Do you think you will like this movie? Miriam: I love marine life. So I feel like, yes, I will enjoy this movie. I'm prepared to love it because I Leslye Headland: Okay. Kate: Just to be clear, you think this is like like you enjoy watching nature documentaries, so therefore you'll like Jaws? Miriam: I think this is My Octopus Teacher, but with a shark. Kate: Okay. I got it. Thanks for the clarification. Leslye Headland: Okay, got it. Okay. Yeah. The whole thing is narrated by Richard Attenborough. Like that's what's that's what you think this is. Okay. Okay. Miriam: Yes, yeah, yeah. Kate: It's basically national geographic, yeah. Leslye Headland: All right. All right. Miriam: That's what I'm hoping. Leslye Headland: do you think the documentary or anyone spoil the movie for you? Like is you named like the the how the shark was shot and the Miriam: Yeah. Leslye Headland: and the famous lines and stuff. Do you feel Part of the reasons Miriam: Mm. Leslye Headland: you didn't see it was it that you sort of felt like Miriam: Right. Leslye Headland: you'd already seen it essentially. Miriam: I also feel like if somebody does not get eaten by a shark, I will hate this movie. Leslye Headland: Okay. Miriam: When I Kate: If that's your baseline. Miriam: I have been promised people eating gore. Leslye Headland: Okay. So your expectations, Kate: Gore Leslye Headland: your expectations are high for this movie. Okay. Okay. Are there Miriam: high. They are high. Cinematic masterpiece. Leslye Headland: Masterpiece. Okay, you're if it's not a masterpiece. Okay, got it. Got it. Okay. Good luck, Steven Spielberg. You know, I'm Miriam: Masterpiece. Mm-hmm. Leslye Headland: I'm wondering if one of these days Steven Spielberg, Miriam: Time. Leslye Headland: if he's gonna make that, one that really connects with the people, you know. that's a Jiminy Glick joke, so I'm not gonna steal that. Miriam: I know, right? Leslye Headland: okay. so there's a bunch of cultural references that you know. You're expecting this to Miriam: Mm. Leslye Headland: be, let's see, horrifying and bloody. And Miriam: Yeah. Leslye Headland: you're predicting that you will like it unless someone doesn't get eaten by a shark, at which point you will I don't know, throw a riot in the streets. Like, yeah. You'll walk out of your living room. Okay, got it. Miriam: That I'm I will I will walk out of my living room. Yeah. Leslye Headland: Got it. I think unless you have any other questions, Kate, I think we can jump to the future. Or Miriam, do you have any other questions? Kate: I think we're supposed to say whether or not we think she'll like it. Leslye Headland: That's right. Miriam: I also wanna state that I know that it was a recent anniversary. Wasn't it like a Kate: Fifty. Miriam: bit Fifty? Wow. Okay. Leslye Headland: it was fifty. Yeah. Yeah. Kate: You don't need to fact check that, I'm the smartest friend. This is gonna be fun. Can I just make shit up Miriam: Okay. All right. Leslye Headland: That is true, actually. Kate: now and you guys will believe Miriam: Yeah. Kate: it? Miriam: Yeah. All right, I'm ex I'm Leslye Headland: The answer is yes to that. Okay. Miriam: excited that I will finally see this fifty year old movie. Leslye Headland: I think I think Miriam's gonna love this movie. That's how I feel. I feel like she's gonna Miriam: Nice, nice. Leslye Headland: love it. I think there are gonna be parts of it that are fifty years old, I do think she's gonna love it. Yeah. Kate: sold on the fact that you'll love it, I think you'll find the level of shark gore pleasant, apparently. That's your requirement. I think it will check that box for you. I think it's very 1970s though, and I'm not sure Miriam: Mm. Kate: you'll love those parts to it. Miriam: Is there a strong father son relationship anywhere in this movie? Kate: Are you asking if there's a heartwarming element to Jaws? Miriam: Yeah. Kate: find out. Miriam: I look forward to a warm father shark relationship in this movie. And the shark. Maybe baby shark. Leslye Headland: between the father and the shark. Okay, all right. So Kate: like a baby shark. Leslye Headland: between Richard Dreyfuss and the baby shark. Understood. Okay, great. Now we're gonna jump into the future. Honestly, a more harmonious, better future, where Miriam has finally seen Jaws, the nature documentary. Miriam: Exciting. Dun dun. Leslye: We've been waiting for this for a while. Miriam has now seen Jaws. All right, what'd you think? Miriam: I have seen Jaws and I love it. Now I am one of those people that wants to like watch all the documentaries again and like read all the things and find out all the behind the scenes and go to Martha's Vineyard, buy a t-shirt. I'm so in. It is a great movie on many, Leslye: Where w Miriam: levels. Leslye: Where did it get you? Like start to finish or did it grow on you? Miriam: when I was very invested in the town meeting, I was like, yeah, I love this movie You know, in a weird way, it's very like Gilmore Girls where there's just like, there's the town. There's all these strange characters, it's like each, character that comes into frame has like a moment that you like really connect with. Like all of these townspeople. Kate: So J Jaws is like Gilmore Girls. You heard it here first, yeah. Miriam: Jaws is just like Gilmore Girls. Leslye: You heard it here first. come. Miriam: There's just a really good Stars Hollows vibe, which I really like. If you know, know. if you know, you know. But like they've got just very good town, town members. The mayor is the true villain of this story. He puts profits over Leslye: Yes. Fa Kate: Agree. Agree. Miriam: people. It's his fault that that little boy dies and all those fishermen. That's on him. So just, Leslye: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Miriam: you know, cause I love the scene where the mother comes and yells at Roy Schneider for the Leslye: Yeah. Miriam: death of her son she's fantastic. First of all, you know, most of these people are played by the townspeople, like people that actually lived Leslye: No. Miriam: on Martha's Vineyard. Most of these like small, like character moments we see are people that they just cast on Martha's Vineyard. So that mother was just a person, a local townsperson. Kate: That's cool. Miriam: Yeah, like it's so amazing. Most of the people, like all those fishermen, you know, the guy that they based Shaw off of is like a real person that lives in Martha's Vineyard. he was, Leslye: What? Miriam: yeah, it's so great. And her, that moment, guys, Leslye: I had no idea I did not know that. Miriam: Did you watch the documentary? Kate: No, Miriam. Miriam: you Leslye: Okay, there are a couple there are a couple directions we should go right now. So Miriam: Yes. Leslye: I wanna hear all about the Jaws conspiracy video algorithm that you probably fell into. or the making of, sorry, the making of, not the but I gotta ask, so town meeting was when you were in. You were like, okay. Yeah, town meeting, okay. Miriam: I was in town meeting. Very, I mean, very heroic start to what's like, you know what, like minute five and we have our first victim. Crazy. Terrifying. Or maybe it's less. Yeah. Leslye: Yeah. Yeah. Well it's even less than that. The girl dies at like thirty seconds. Kate: Jump right in. Miriam: Really? Okay. Well, it's, it's, I was like, wow, she's dead. I was Leslye: No, no, I guess it is five minutes. You're right. Miriam: like, whoa. Leslye: Okay, so which first of all you gotta tell me which guy was your favorite guy. Miriam: Yeah, wait, everybody's a favorite? I mean, I have to say Richard Dreyfuss is definitely my favorite. He's definitely, Leslye: Well I do. Richard Dreyfuss Richard Dreyfuss Miriam: he's definitely my favorite. He's just, he's just like playing it's so cool. Like Leslye: My god. Miriam: giving oceanographers everywhere, such a good name. Shark specialist. Kate: who played Mr. Holland in Mr. Holland's Opus the whole time? I was like, Richard Dreyfuss Miriam: can see it. can see it. Yeah. the actor that played Shaw was like this classically trained British actor Leslye: Yeah. Miriam: and he did not get along with Richard Dreyfuss or they have this like very intense rivalry while they were filming, who's your favorite? Leslye: Richard Dreyfuss is like there's no I mean Roy is not Miriam: Okay, okay, Kate, who's your favorite? Kate: Is there another answer to that? I it has to be r Richard Dreyfuss. Miriam: that's so interesting. Yes. Leslye: I would be very interested in the gender split between men and women of who their favorite is, who were their favorite Miriam: Mmm. Leslye: because like I would just text all of my female friends right now and be like, Richard Dreyfuss, right? Like Miriam: Yeah, no, you're right. I could see how Shaw might be or what's Roy Schneider's character's name? Kate: Martin Brody. Leslye: on. I'll look it up. Miriam: Chief Brody, Chief Brody. Yeah, Leslye: Chief Brody. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Kate: Yeah. Miriam: I could see how that might be a favorite too, because he's great in it. I really like his character a lot too, yeah. Leslye: No, he's a w he's incredible. Yeah. Yeah. Miriam: I honestly think it's like all of these little like town characters. I love the kids that played Roy Schneider's sons. I like the wife. Leslye: Yeah. Miriam: I like everybody. I like the horrible villain mayor guy and his crazy hair. Yes. Mm-hmm. Leslye: So you really loved like the world building. That's why it was Stars Hollow for you. Like you loved the world building. It dropped you into this. Miriam: Yes. Leslye: So did you feel like scared? Like 'cause that's usually what people talk about, right? Is like the scariness or you know, the suspense Kate: Like the jump scares. Leslye: or the jump scares. Yeah. Miriam: I felt like it was very much two acts. the first half is like, you can't go on the beach. everybody, let's try to kill the shark. And then it's the three of them on the boat. I mean, Leslye: Yes, yeah. Miriam: It's a really amazing, adventure story once the three of them are on the boat we're going for the white whale. Like that part is very fun. It moves so fast till the end, but I definitely liked the first half better. Yeah. Leslye: You did? What about you, Kate? Do you have a preference? Kate: Interesting. No, I have the opposite Miriam: Ha Kate: take on it. I was like, get on the boat already. Let's go. I I Miriam: HMMMM Kate: mean like my notes from the first part are like the amount amount of dark tans is amazing, the lack of sunscreen at this time. I was just like, Miriam: hahahaha Kate: I have like nothing interesting to say about it. And then once we get to the like on the boat, I'm like, yeah, let's go. I wasn't, but Miriam: It's the 70s, man. Kate: I think I was. Having seen it, like I was in it for the the action adventure Miriam: Yeah. Leslye: Yeah. Kate: jump scare part of it. It still served. Like I this movie was Leslye: It serves, yeah. Miriam: yeah. Kate: so good still. Miriam: Kate, during that town... Kate: Totally worthy of I think Leslye: It's a basic Kate: all the hype around the fifty years. Miriam: I was just going to say that the town meeting Leslye: yeah. Miriam: though is very eventful. Like the guy, the nails on the chalkboard? What? Kate: I literally have a note that said that was unnecessary. Leslye: I think Spielberg is like obviously I think you could argue he's the greatest film director all time, Quint's introduction is not just it, Miriam: It's great. Leslye: it's the it's great, but also the camera work is great. Like the way he finds Miriam: Mm-hmm. Leslye: him through the people, he's so good at directing, Miriam: Yeah, Leslye: so obvious, but Miriam: no, I agree. I agree. Leslye: but like when they get on the ferry and you know they all get on and the It's the mayor and Brody and like a couple other people. Miriam: Yeah. Leslye: And and it's when he's like, you know, you scream shark Fourth of July. It's like they're they all get Miriam: Yeah. Leslye: on the ferry and then it's one take. what changes is the stuff around the ferry, like the fact that the ferry's moving. I think it was like his second movie, I'm gonna say. that's just such a con. Miriam: Yeah. Yeah. it's Sugar Land Express Leslye: it's this, yeah. He's just Miriam: And then this Leslye: so like to me, that's a really confident thing to do. To be like, I'm Miriam: Mm-hmm. Leslye: just gonna do this, w why cover it, you know? what'd you think of the shark? Fake, stupid, scary? Miriam: Really effective. Like, I love the fact that you don't see the shark for the first half, basically. And like, there's so much like between the music and the and again, the way it's shot. Also, shout out to the kids with the fake shark. What a bunch of asshole kids. I was like, you're telling me these kids went out, got art supplies to make a fake shark. And then they like scared everybody. What? But I Leslye: Wait. Wait, stop for a second. Stop for a Miriam: best part. Leslye: second. So shout out to those kids, meaning like you were so psyched that they did that. Like you were just like sh props to these kids. Miriam: Well, I was like, that was, they're awful. Like that was a really mean trick to play. that's why I think Spielberg is amazing because there's all these tiny little stories happening at the same time. the parts that were the most scary to me was when you see everybody going into the water and you know that it's not safe. And especially Leslye: Yeah. Yeah. Kate: Yeah, the build up. Miriam: that like moment, that moment of relief where they're like, these stupid kids, there was just a fake shark and everybody's like, it's fine. And like everybody rushes in and then you know that shark is in the estuary. Shout Leslye: Yeah, yeah. Miriam: out estuaries. that, like that, that to me, Leslye: Big estuary fan here. Miriam: big estuary, very beautiful wetlands. But like that part to me was the scariest part. Is when you know that the shark is going into that estuary and all the kids are there and yeah, it's, that scarier than like, Leslye: It's very smart. Yeah. It's very smart. it's very Hitchcock. He has like a famous I'm not gonna bore the viewers or can anyone see us? Hearing people, people who hear. Oh Miriam: Yeah. Kate: Or me. Leslye: god, Miriam, I also love that you keep calling them the towns people. Like I don't know, there's something about like you're not wrong, Miriam: Are they not? Leslye: but like I've never heard someone use that word so often in a conversation. Miriam: Sorry! Leslye: So no. No, don't be sorry. It's just I just love that this is your takeaway from Jaws that like Kate: Yeah. Leslye: is it because you knew it was this like is it 'cause Miriam: It's bench. Leslye: you knew and you could kind of look at it closer. Miriam: I knew there was a shark attack, but I really didn't know there was like so much story behind it. I think you could easily have just done this movie and I've never, the one thing I truly don't understand is how they made more than one of these movies. Like I do not understand it. I really don't get it. And Kate: Yeah, and I've never seen the sequel, so I can't speak to that. But Leslye: Me neither. Kate: I like, I don't you don't need more. This one was like Miriam: And I imagine like the sequels or the subsequent movies are just like stripping out all the story, the thing that like I think actually makes the first movie amazing. And again, I haven't seen them, but I'm assuming that they just kind of focus on the action, you know, and the jump scares and stuff. And I think without the like storytelling in this first Jaws, I don't know how you do it. I don't know how you do it. Leslye: I think you're right. I I hadn't really thought of it. I honestly had never thought of the world building of Jaws before. Like I I and you're right. Miriam: Yeah, I really enjoyed it. Leslye: It you're exactly right. did you feel like so you didn't f you weren't as taken with the second half? Miriam: No, that's not, that's not totally true. I did really like when they're on the boat. I mean, the whole, like all of the sequences where they're like releasing the those like yellow canisters, Kate: Barrels. Miriam: the barrels, they're releasing the barrels and like the shark is taunting them and the ship is like, that was amazing too. Like I definitely enjoyed it. I loved the like crazy speech in the middle about the, you U S Indianapolis. And it's like, it's like, I saw my friends get killed by sharks and he's like, and that made me hate the show. Like, I mean, that stuff is amazing. Amazing. Yeah. Like a doll's eyes. And also Leslye: Like a like a like a doll's eyes. Yeah. Yeah. Sometimes I just say that to myself like I'm like like a doll's eyes, yeah. Miriam: it is a great Kate: Mm. Miriam: scene because I have, I've heard you Leslye, think especially say many times to me, we're going to need a bigger boat. And so to actually see him like. you know, the origins of that Kate: So yeah. Miriam: line, which is such a great line. And also it's like, he's chumming the water and then all of a sudden that's the first time you see the shark. that was effective. It was great. You know, he's got the cigarette Leslye: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Miriam: hanging out of his mouth and he's like, oh shit, that's a big shark. Like it's pretty amazing. It's pretty amazing. Leslye: It is interesting 'cause you texted me and or us and I I I had never realized Miriam: Yeah Leslye: that he says, You're gonna need a bigger boat instead of we're gonna need a big Miriam: Yeah, yeah, yeah. You've been misquoting it to me my whole life. So I was like, oh, oh, is Leslye: Hey, don't give it to me. That's what everybody No no no that excuse me Kate: It's what everyone says. Miriam: that what everybody says? We're gonna need a bigger boat Kate: Yeah. Leslye: Kate, is that what everyone says? Kate: That's what I I always thought it was we're gonna need a bigger boat. I mean, to be fair, it's totally Leslye: Yeah. Everybody misquotes it. Miriam: Interesting. Kate: possible that Miriam: Intra-sting! Leslye: Well, why do you think people do that? Kate: 'Cause there's more than one person on the boat. Like, why would Miriam: hahahahah Leslye: Yeah. So yeah. But I'm Kate: I believe it may be gramma grammatically correct, Leslye: saying Kate: but I Miriam: Yeah, how did you guys feel watching it again? Did it hold up? Were you like, yeah, yeah. Kate: It was so fun. It Leslye: yeah. yeah. I I just I've seen that Kate: was so fun. Leslye: movie so many times. It's my wife's favorite movie, period. Yeah, she loves it. Yeah, it's genuinely Kate: really? That's a great favorite movie. Miriam: Yeah, I agree. Leslye: like we went to go see it in the theater I think last year. They were playing it at the Alamo in Brooklyn. It was great. Yo yes, yeah, Miriam: Mmm. 50th anniversary. Nice, nice. Kate: Yeah, when they're read yeah. Leslye: it was great. It was just like what do you how about you, Kate? my god, I have so many favorite parts. Yeah. Miriam: Do you have a favorite part? Kate, what's your favorite part? Yeah, what's your favorite part? Kate: My favorite part? Miriam: Mm-hmm. Kate: I think I really love the build up to the before the shark attacks the boat with the barrels because the barrels is like the proxy Miriam: Yeah. Kate: for the shark and the power it builds the intensity so much. So I really I think I enjoy that part the most. I know what's coming. So the build up to it and the build up is just so fun. Like I this whole Leslye: Yeah. Miriam: Yeah. Kate: movie is just very fun for a movie that's about people getting killed by sharks, Miriam: Yeah, and killing a shark. Kate: And killing sharks. Miriam: there's something about that part, which made me think of like, there's this whaling culture. You guys know, you guys know about like when in New England, everybody would go whaling, like Captain Ahab and you know about this? Leslye: Absolutely not, but I really want you to talk about it. I really do, I want you to talk about it, yeah. Miriam: There Kate: museums and everything. Yeah. Miriam: whaling museum, What is it about humans? I guess it's just like in our ancestral DNA that we love to get on a boat and go after a really big sea creature, there's something in this movie like speaks to it, where it's like that whole, in that scene with the barrels, it's like, they've got the harpoon out and there's like these steps in trying to catch it. which I feel is ingrained in us like deeply like to see man versus nature, epicness. Leslye: that like I agree and I think I I love that Robert Shaw has this in the second half half of the movie has this like personal relationship with the shark. Miriam: That's what I mean. Like it's a Captain Ahab and it's his white whale, like he has a vendetta. He's like, will. Well, it's fair. Yeah. Leslye: Yeah, but he doesn't even know this shark, you know, like he's like Kate: Sharks in general, they're all the same. Miriam: I didn't want to bring it up. It is an anti-shark. No, didn't. Leslye: Yeah, I guess that yeah. You didn't want to bring one up. You Miriam: This is a very anti-shark movie. And I did feel bad for the sharks. I felt bad Kate: anti shark propaganda for sure. Leslye: Yeah, I agree. Miriam: for the tiger shark, you know, and that was like a real shark. that was like dead and smelling up the set. It's a 13 foot tiger shark. Yeah, they literally, it was like caught in Florida. They flew it on a private plane. That is a real shark that you see dead and hanging. And it was like, really, it's they Kate: Right. Miriam: are like, talk about how bad it smelled. Leslye: In Florida? Miriam: Yeah, it was a, it's a very, it's like crazy. In 19, this is my second screen fact. Kate: Okay. Miriam: In 1975, film Jaws, the production team flew in a dead 13 foot tiger shark from Florida Martha's Vineyard on a chartered private plane. It was used for the dock scene where the local fishermen mistakenly paraded as the killer shark. Kate: I a real shark. Leslye: That's just okay. Miriam: Cause it was 1975. And they probably, Leslye: Okay. Miriam: cause they were so tired of that mechanical shark. Leslye: They were like, let's get a dead shark. Even better. Yeah. I Miriam: Yeah, even easier. Kate: Ha ha. Leslye: My favorite part of the movie, it's not really there's just so many favorite parts. But the but the part that always gives me like just so much joy in my heart is when Richard Dreyfuss what's his name? Hooper? Anyway, Hooper, when Miriam: Hooper Leslye: he says this is a perfect machine, and all this machine does is swim, eat, and make little sharks. And and there's Miriam: Mmm. Leslye: something about like making little sharks that always makes me kind of laugh, you know. I'm like, I know he's making little sharks, you know, like Miriam: Yeah. Leslye: Okay, so any more second screen facts? I feel like you have a lot of you got a lot of them. Miriam: Oh, I have so many, but one thing I'll say Kate: She's like, I have a documentary's worth of them. Leslye: Yeah, yeah. Miriam: though is like, you guys are gonna think I'm crazy, but I kind of like that they don't give the shark a backstory. You know what I mean? Like, and again, don't know what happens in Jaws 2, 3, 4, 5, whatever, but like, I like that it's not like, it's a mama shark and it's baby was killed and it's gonna get, revenge. I just like that it's just Kate: They're like, No, it's evil. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Miriam: like, We got a shark everybody. It's here, it's hungry. I did learn that this is the reason why you can't have flotation devices at the beach. Because like when that kid gets killed and he's sitting on the floaty, that draws them because they think it looks like seals. Anywho. Kate: Mir, remember when you went swimming with seals off the coast of the Cape and then they were like, the sharks are Miriam: I did, I actually, I did, maybe if I had seen this movie, I wouldn't have made a grave mistake because I'd never seen Jaws and I was in Cape Cod and I went out to like one of the sandbars and I was swimming in the water, having the best time ever, ocean side and having a great time. And I didn't know that where there are seals, there are usually sharks. And then when I got out of the water, I was with my good friend, Meaghan, get out of the water. And then our other friend at the beach was like, I could have sworn I thought somebody else was swimming with you. And then a few minutes later, we see a seal in the water. So we were swimming with seals and probably great white sharks. And I've lived to tell the tale. I almost died. I was Kate: You almost died, but here you are. Miriam: almost eaten by a Leslye: So Miriam: Hahaha! Leslye: we should talk about the music before we wrap it Miriam: Yes. Yeah. Kate: So good. Leslye: So good. my God. I Miriam: Yeah. Leslye: think I'm going to say it. His best work. I'm saying it. Miriam: Actually, I loved the score. the thing that is so awesome about these movies that are part of like deeply ingrained in culture is that I would have thought that that theme, the Dunt Dunt, played like 10 million times in that movie. I think it's like twice. Kate: yeah. Leslye: Yeah, yeah. Miriam: How amazing is that? That piece of music that you basically, when you see it, you only hear it a couple of times, like has such a lasting impact. Leslye: It's incredible. Miriam: And it's like sometimes a little bit light. Kate: Agreed. Miriam: Like it's not always so dramatic. Yeah. Leslye: That's the thing. I agree, yeah. I also have this theory, that if something has a good soundtrack, like a very memorable soundtrack, it can absolutely sustain itself on that soundtrack for a very long time, for a very long time. And I will use the example of Jaws, then becomes like five movies. I'm gonna say it, Miriam: Yeah. Leslye: Stranger Things. We didn't really need that many, Miriam: Interesting. Leslye: we didn't really need that many of that season. I'm gonna also say, Succession. I'm gonna say it. So good. And yet, you Miriam: great, I know. It's such good music. Leslye: know, and yet I was a little like, where are we going with this? You know, like it does feel Miriam: Yeah. Leslye: like there is, it just buys you so much to have an iconic Miriam: Yeah. Leslye: piece of music. Like, you just become iconic. And for other reasons too, but yeah. Miriam: Yeah, agreed. I'd throw Game of Thrones in there as well. Yeah. Leslye: Absolutely, Yes, no, true, true. mean, honestly, Star Wars, probably too. That's a movie that you can watch with your eyes closed because of him. know, like he just, Miriam: Yeah, so true. Leslye: if I had, do you guys have other favorite John Williams? Like do you vote for? Miriam: I mean, of course, Star Wars, of course. Leslye: Yeah. Miriam: my favorite YouTube video is the, two moons of Tatooine, Luke looking out at them and it's just Leslye: so beautiful. Miriam: the score over and over and over again Leslye: Hahaha Miriam: and like you could fall asleep to it and it's just, yeah, it's the best. It's the best. Agreed. Of course. Yeah, there's YouTube. Leslye: Wait, it's on YouTube? that what he said? Okay, you could just listen to it. You Miriam: Yeah. No, like the YouTube that Leslye: could just put the CD on. Miriam: the no, it's so much funnier watching it. It just looped on YouTube. Come on, obviously. Leslye: you Miriam: Oh, one other. Yeah. No, no. Kate: He did Jurassic Park too, right? I think Jurassic Park is another one. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Leslye: Yeah. Yeah. Kate: Like classic. Yeah. Leslye: I got to say it. E.T. is unbelievable. Like E.T. it's kind of a weirdly Kate: so good. Leslye: a deep cut considering how huge that movie was, but his and also, yeah. Miriam: I have s- I was going to say I've seen ET one time. It scared me way too much as a child. I can never watch it again. So Leslye: It's terrifying. Miriam: I don't, I don't remember the music. So scary. Kate: The music is great. Yeah. Leslye: Yeah. Miriam: Yeah. Leslye: It's interesting about ET. Wait, Kate, have you seen ET? Oh. I just feel like if anybody hasn't seen... Kate: Yeah. Yeah. Like a gajillion times. Leslye: Okay, alright. Kate: And I find it interesting that it's you found it scary because it makes me cry every time I watch it, even though I know exactly what's gonna happen. But every time that flower dies, I'm like, no. Miriam: No, really remember, I really remember like vividly being so scared when like the FBI agents or whatever are after them. when you see Leslye: yeah. Miriam: them and when you see them like operating on ET, no, I did not like it. We didn't actually talk about this. why is Spielberg so good with kids? Like all the kids the scene where the kid is like, you know, mimicking his dad and it's just like, it's so sweet. And like even those Leslye: Yeah. Miriam: kids on the boat, like they're just so good. I love a Spielberg movie where it's just like, let's focus on these kids for a while because it's just so Leslye: Genuinely, I don't know. Miriam: Genuinely great. Leslye: Kate, do you have any thoughts on that? Because I agree, I have no idea why you're so good. Miriam: He's so good. I guess because he's like a kid. Kate: Just good at imagination, like so maybe he's just able to speak to them better. Like that's something I've always appreciated about his work. It's Miriam: Mm-hmm. Kate: like it it's like just imagination and that's what makes it fun. Like there's Leslye: Yeah. Yeah. Kate: no pretense to it. It's just straight imagination Miriam: Yeah. Yeah. Kate: and therefore it's fun. I Leslye: Yeah. Kate: don't know. So maybe if he's able to communicate that to them better. Miriam: It's so true. Too bad Leslye: Yeah, I was. Miriam: we can't rewatch Hook. but talk about being, getting Leslye: Talk about. Miriam: like kids Kate: Yeah. Miriam: and like fun performances and, you know, Leslye: Bye! Miriam: having this incredible imagination, and seeing the world like through childlike eyes. it's so great. It's so great. Leslye: And the score, the score to that is awesome. Yeah. Yeah. Miriam: And the score? Yes, yes, Kate: Yeah. Yeah. Miriam: yes, yes. Yeah. But he just gets being a kid. Like even when the kid that gets killed, like he goes to his mom and he's like, 10 more minutes. My fingers aren't like wrinkled yet. Like, it's just, Leslye: yes, that's right. Miriam: yeah. did we talk about like when they're all three of them in the boat when they're comparing all their scars Leslye: yes. Yes, that's good. Miriam: this movie is great because there's so many little moments like we're talking about where if you, again, were just to focus on the action, I don't think I personally would have liked it so much, but because there's all these really tiny, character based moments, I just loved it. Leslye: Aww. Miriam: I loved it. I loved it. Kate: Wait, I have another favorite part. I loved when you get the underwater point of view of the shark and it's like nature documentary and then it switches back Miriam: yeah. Yeah. Kate: to like movie and then it goes to nature documentary. That part I thought was really fun too. Miriam: Kate, you want a second screen shot? Kate: Yeah, I do. Miriam: They hired these real nature photographers to get a lot of the shark footage. Kate: Smart thinking. It was effective. Miriam: Amazing, so much of the documentary is just how like the shooting of this movie was miserable because they actually shot on the ocean. one of the people almost got decapitated by the boat's propellers. and Dreyfuss was almost imprisoned in that steel cage because they rammed into him way too many times and I thought this was funny the crew mocked Spielberg because he wore bell bottoms. Leslye: Wasn't he like 25? Miriam: Can you imagine? He was 25. He thought the whole time that he was gonna get fired. He was way over budget. Everybody hated him because shooting on water was so miserable. one of the great stories in the documentary is he's like, I think I had PTSD from shooting the film. Even though was a wild success. And so he talked about how they took the orca, the boat, and they put it on the Universal Studios lot. he would to like this weird form of therapy, he would sneak onto the lot, sneak to the boat and go sit in the boat to help himself feel better and try to get over the trauma of making this movie. Kate: Stephen, Miriam: here's it sitting alone inside the pilot house and the red booth cabin He confronted his fears and relived his memories until he felt at peace. I mean I'm so happy this movie was a success or we may have lost Steven Spielberg Leslye: You Miriam: Yes, well and orcas will Kate: Also I loved that the boat was named Orca because Orca is also a predator. So then it was like the predator of the predator. Miriam: Yeah, that's a great point Kate: I went down a long orca trip. Miriam: Yeah. Leslye: That's where you went. That's where you went. didn't go down or I didn't do any second screen facts I think for this. Miriam: Really? Leslye: I don't think I did. Kate: I also learned that somebody caught a great white shark off of the coast of Nantucket like a couple of weeks ago. Miriam: Really? Leslye: Recently? Kate: So that's fun. Don't go swimming there. Yeah, like recently. Leslye: Oh my god. My god. Miriam: I mean, I would still swim in the water though. Are you guys Kate: Me too. Miriam: like not gonna swim in the ocean? I mean, I might think about it for a sec, but I think. Kate: I mean it's it hasn't stopped me from swimming Leslye: Yeah. Kate: so so Leslye: Wait, so you watched this movie and you thought like, I'm not going back into the ocean? Miriam: No, I just was like, I get it. I get why people were scared of the ocean after this movie. And yeah, Leslye: I see. Yeah. Miriam: I totally understand. know, it's pretty terrifying. And if you'd ever thought about it, you're like, OK, oops. Yeah. Leslye: It does feel, now that we're talking about it, like the Hitchcockian kind of, we know something the characters don't know and that that's really Miriam: Yeah. Leslye: what makes it suspenseful. He has this famous thing about, like if you have a bomb strapped under a table and, it goes off, you get like one second of. suspense or excitement. was like, but if you show the audience the bomb, ahead of the scene, every moment in the scene becomes scary. what you guys are saying about us, the scariest part is us knowing that they're walking into a trap It's like Miriam: yeah. Leslye: in Psycho when he killed Janet Lee in the shower, Miriam: everybody. Leslye: I think people en masse had never considered the shower being so vulnerable. Kate: Dangerous. Miriam: Yeah, Leslye: Like they were just like, my God, like it hit them on. Miriam: yeah, yeah, yeah. It taps in. The Jaws back up. Okay, Leslye: Yeah. Miriam: the last thing is that he heard that the in the final scene, which they actually were shooting, I think back in California, in like a tank. And somebody told him that the crew was going to throw him into the water after martini shot. So he left the set because he didn't want to get thrown in the water. And then now it's like apparently like a tradition for Spielberg that he's never there on the final shot of his movies. Leslye: That's cute. Miriam: I love Spielberg. I feel like, I felt like watching it and then like doing all the second screen facts and watching into the documentary, it really is like his origin story in a way too, as Leslye: Yeah. Yeah. Miriam: a director, you know? And it like, in a weird way, it sets up his career, it influences his career. And to see him create this when he's so young and almost made me feel validated for loving him. Leslye: Yeah. Miriam: He has always been so good and he made so many mistakes and he learned from them and he went on to make all these other amazing films. So yeah, I liked it on several levels. Leslye: So thanks for joining us for How Have You Not Seen This? So Miriam: always back. Leslye: obviously the verdict on this, Miriam, is... Miriam: think I'm a fan. I'm a fan. And I could see rewatching this movie every year. I could, Leslye: Yeah, Miriam: yeah. Not all sharks. Hashtag not all sharks are brutal killers. You know, I'm like thinking to myself, was this movie, did this create the success of the song Baby Shark? Is that how we move through pop culture? Leslye: As someone that has been listening to it for three years now straight, it does Miriam: Yeah, yeah. Leslye: start with, it starts with a little, yeah, it starts with a little callback. I don't, mean, Kate: Does it? Leslye: you know, the... Miriam: We find out John Williams, kind of secretly wrote Baby Shark, his most enduring piece. Incredible. All right. All right. Great. Leslye: He's getting royalties. Yeah. All right. Kate: These are some great takeaways. I'm glad. Miriam: Awesome. Awesome. Leslye: All right, guys, listen, Miriam: That's Kate.
