- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think trusting the Lord ultimately is trusting the outcome.
- 1:09SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: Like I can trust the Lord because I have a part I can trust the Lord in thinking He's gonna deliver the outcome I want.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: But I think trusting the Lord is ultimately no matter the outcome that is within God's sovereign plan.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: And if that outcome is uncomfortable for me, it might be uncomfortable to it it might disrupt my comfort, but the Lord is doing something in my character.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: And so, you know, if it's like, man, I'm I'm trusting the Lord with with whatever it might be, with my finances, and things get really tight and things continue to get worse.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: Trusting the Lord looks like on the other side of that, not getting what you want and going, thank you, Lord.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: This is your will for my life, and you are doing something in and through it.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: You are teaching me something in the midst of this outcome that looks hard for me.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: It wasn't part of my plan, but ultimately it's a part of your plan.
- 2:04SPEAKER_05: Breaking news coming straight at you from Bellflower, California.
- 2:09SPEAKER_05: And this, ladies and gentlemen, may just about make headlines because the breaking news is that I, Emile Easy Zwain, your humble Arab co-host, believes in evolution.
- 2:23SPEAKER_05: It began with a razor scooter.
- 2:26SPEAKER_05: It went to a little boy's bike.
- 2:29SPEAKER_05: Moved up to a woman's bike, then it went to a big man's electric bike, moved back down to a little boy's electric bike.
- 2:38SPEAKER_05: And now I'm wondering what's next for Ray Comfort.
- 2:41SPEAKER_06: A little boy's electric bike.
- 2:44SPEAKER_06: It is.
- 2:45SPEAKER_06: Tell us about the one.
- 2:46SPEAKER_06: My feet couldn't reach the previous.
- 2:47SPEAKER_06: I couldn't reach the ground.
- 2:48SPEAKER_06: Which was a man's bike.
- 2:50SPEAKER_06: No, it wasn't.
- 2:53SPEAKER_06: Headlines.
- 2:54SPEAKER_06: Oh, it's a corduroy pillowcases.
- 2:55SPEAKER_06: They're making headlines.
- 2:56SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 2:57SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 2:57SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 2:57SPEAKER_05: It was.
- 2:58SPEAKER_05: And then you went to a little one.
- 2:59SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: Now, Ray, if When are we going to start the podcast?
- 3:02SPEAKER_05: If they had.
- 3:04SPEAKER_05: If they had pogo shoes.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: You're laughing at your own junk or Pogo shoes.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: They used to have them.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Stop.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: No, like in the 50s.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: I think I've seen these.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: They had shoes with springs on them.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Remember the shoes with springs on them?
- 3:16SPEAKER_05: No.
- 3:17SPEAKER_05: Why ask me?
- 3:18SPEAKER_05: Mark, you were the pogo stick master.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: They had springs.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: So they still have them?
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Springs on the bottom of the shoes.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: You would attach them to the bottom of your shoes.
- 3:27SPEAKER_06: Didn't you send me some shoes recently that would lift me up about three inches?
- 3:30SPEAKER_06: I did.
- 3:31SPEAKER_06: Yeah, they they would.
- 3:32SPEAKER_05: I I looked at the well and it's a little bit more.
- 3:33SPEAKER_05: Oh, you didn't get them.
- 3:34SPEAKER_05: No, but I don't I don't need them.
- 3:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 3:36SPEAKER_05: No, you guys saw those shoes that um that actually they move you faster.
- 3:41SPEAKER_05: It's almost like a walking people mover.
- 3:43SPEAKER_05: I mean, you know, uh a shoe version.
- 3:46SPEAKER_05: And as you walk, it's you're walking, you're not running, but it's like moving you forward.
- 3:50SPEAKER_05: Was this a dream?
- 3:51SPEAKER_05: No, it was real.
- 3:52SPEAKER_05: Seriously.
- 3:52SPEAKER_05: I'd love to see you in those, right?
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: Uh in other news, I I usually hate puzzles.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: Um but my kids were away at camp.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: And so we don't have much to do.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: And so I finished a puzzle in one week.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: Stop.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: The cover said two to four years.
- 4:10SPEAKER_05: Pretty good.
- 4:11SPEAKER_05: Tell us about spilling stuff on the tape.
- 4:14SPEAKER_05: That's why I started laughing.
- 4:15SPEAKER_05: I spilled my teeth in the cover that up.
- 4:18SPEAKER_05: That was good.
- 4:18SPEAKER_05: Well, it's funny with your cup.
- 4:20SPEAKER_05: Um classy cup.
- 4:23SPEAKER_05: Uh this is from uh Galal Ahmed.
- 4:27SPEAKER_05: Galal Ahmed, and it's physical.
- 4:29SPEAKER_05: We love it when we get physical stuff.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: I like the way you lick your finger to grab paper.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: He's like a little bit.
- 4:43SPEAKER_05: He's like a cotton mouth when he's done.
- 4:45SPEAKER_05: All or nothing.
- 4:46SPEAKER_05: All right, this is from Galal Ahmed.
- 4:49SPEAKER_05: Uh Mark Easy, Oscar, and Ray.
- 4:51SPEAKER_05: I was the one who sent this letter in a box with the red books, breadsticks, and more back in December.
- 4:56SPEAKER_05: Ha ha.
- 4:57SPEAKER_05: The mystery is solved.
- 4:58SPEAKER_05: Oscar, what a mess.
- 5:00SPEAKER_05: But apparently you somehow lost it.
- 5:03SPEAKER_05: So I'm resending what I can.
- 5:05SPEAKER_05: The breadsticks and tea were from Egypt, so I'm unable to resend that.
- 5:08SPEAKER_05: We're going to Egypt.
- 5:09SPEAKER_05: We'll have to try to find them there.
- 5:10SPEAKER_05: My wife made baklwa or betlewa as we say it.
- 5:14SPEAKER_05: Uh, people who don't know how to say it say baklava, but you spelt it right.
- 5:17SPEAKER_05: Baklava.
- 5:17SPEAKER_05: Baklawa.
- 5:18SPEAKER_05: Baklewa for y'all last time, but I thought it might be better to give it to you in person sometime if we are ever able to come visit the ministry.
- 5:25SPEAKER_05: I love you guys so much.
- 5:26SPEAKER_05: God graciously saved me through your ministry back in 2006.
- 5:30SPEAKER_05: Praise God, watching Wave the Master on TV.
- 5:33SPEAKER_05: I was raised by a mother who was a false convert and a father from Cairo, Egypt, who is a Muslim.
- 5:38SPEAKER_05: Thank you so much for your faithfulness in proclaiming the gospel.
- 5:40SPEAKER_05: I'm forever grateful.
- 5:41SPEAKER_05: Ray, you have been my mentor from afar.
- 5:43SPEAKER_05: My best friend calls me the Egyptian Ray Comfort.
- 5:46SPEAKER_05: Oh dear.
- 5:47SPEAKER_05: I met you a couple years after my conversion at a deeper conference.
- 5:51SPEAKER_06: Whoa.
- 5:51SPEAKER_05: You guys remember that?
- 5:52SPEAKER_05: Deeper?
- 5:52SPEAKER_06: Oh, remember Deeper.
- 5:53SPEAKER_05: Deeper.
- 5:54SPEAKER_05: I will never forget it.
- 5:55SPEAKER_05: You made fun of me for having a disposable camera.
- 5:58SPEAKER_05: Ha ha.
- 5:59SPEAKER_05: I also met uh Mark there.
- 6:00SPEAKER_05: Both of you men were so gracious and have been such godly examples.
- 6:03SPEAKER_05: I also met EZ and Oscar in DC during the Reason Rally outreach in 2016.
- 6:08SPEAKER_05: Oh, wow.
- 6:08SPEAKER_05: It's been 10 years since that.
- 6:10SPEAKER_05: Reason, wow.
- 6:11SPEAKER_05: Uh anyways, my family and I thank God so much for the encouragement you all have been to us.
- 6:16SPEAKER_05: If any of you men ever come through or near southern Missouri, we would love to have you stop by and stay a while.
- 6:22SPEAKER_05: We have a guest cottage and nine acres with lots of chickens ready.
- 6:25SPEAKER_06: Oh go.
- 6:26SPEAKER_06: You've been to southern Missouri quite often.
- 6:28SPEAKER_06: You're gonna mention that?
- 6:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 6:29SPEAKER_05: I look I look forward to seeing each and every one of you in the new heavens and new earth worshiping our king, accepted in the beloved Yalal Ahmed.
- 6:38SPEAKER_05: Praise the Lord.
- 6:38SPEAKER_06: Yeah, what a wonderful guy.
- 6:39SPEAKER_05: And we got saved through the ministry, through Way the Master.
- 6:41SPEAKER_06: Praise the Lord.
- 6:42SPEAKER_06: Where are they from?
- 6:43SPEAKER_05: Um Missouri.
- 6:45SPEAKER_05: Oh, you've been to Missouri.
- 6:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you've been to somebody Missy.
- 6:49SPEAKER_05: I will never live that down.
- 6:51SPEAKER_05: He's been a Mongomer.
- 6:52SPEAKER_05: Thank you, Brother Galal.
- 6:53SPEAKER_05: Thanks for the stuff you sent.
- 6:54SPEAKER_05: And uh keep pressing on, brother.
- 6:56SPEAKER_05: Oh no.
- 6:58SPEAKER_05: Here we go.
- 6:59SPEAKER_05: Gets a new shirt, and all of a sudden he wants to share everything.
- 7:01SPEAKER_05: You've just now entered the quality question section.
- 7:05SPEAKER_05: This one will be answered if you can stop playing with stuff by Mark Spence.
- 7:09SPEAKER_05: This is from Nicole Riddick.
- 7:11SPEAKER_05: Subject Hello from Asia.
- 7:14SPEAKER_05: Dear brothers, I'm a listener from the San Francisco Bay Area.
- 7:17SPEAKER_05: Currently live and teach in Asia.
- 7:19SPEAKER_05: I first want to thank you so much for your podcast.
- 7:22SPEAKER_05: Each time I listen to an episode, I can't help but smile as I listen to my big brothers in Christ joke with one another and also talk seriously about truth.
- 7:29SPEAKER_05: I greatly appreciate episodes like How to Deal with Past Regrets, which is one I go back to often.
- 7:34SPEAKER_05: Mark's example of how he type out his past regrets, highlight them in red, and then hit the delete button with such a beautiful picture of what Christ has done for us through his death and resurrection.
- 7:43SPEAKER_05: Thank you for edifying the body of Christ through the podcast.
- 7:45SPEAKER_05: I do have a question for you all regarding past regrets slash sinful choices.
- 7:49SPEAKER_05: I was just wondering what your thoughts are about how to respond to the consequences one might face as a result of past sinful choices.
- 7:56SPEAKER_05: How should a believer rightly understand and respond to consequences we might face for past sin and light of God's grace for sinners?
- 8:04SPEAKER_05: I want to be cautious of drifting into self-pity or seeking to where hear words that will make light of my past sin.
- 8:10SPEAKER_05: However, I admit it can be difficult to have to work through certain things because of the choices I've made in the past.
- 8:16SPEAKER_05: I would appreciate your thoughts on this and your prayers more than anything else.
- 8:20SPEAKER_05: Your sister in Christ, Nicole, are Psalm 23.
- 8:22SPEAKER_06: Before we answer that, I just want to say, yeah, great, you've become tolerant of trash on the table.
- 8:26SPEAKER_06: Oh, ah!
- 8:28SPEAKER_05: I know.
- 8:30SPEAKER_05: Away, you guys.
- 8:32SPEAKER_05: Mark, answer the question.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: Um good question.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: You know, there's an interesting saying.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: Whenever the enemy reminds you of your past Easy, what did you just do?
- 8:46SPEAKER_05: Yale's fault.
- 8:48SPEAKER_05: Ah, the new little thing fell off.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: No, you're good.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: Um whenever the enemy reminds you of your past, remind him of his future.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, I what I don't do that, but you know, it's an interesting thing.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: The idea is, listen, we are a new creature, a new creation in Christ.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: The old things have passed away.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: Behold, all things have become new.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Um so I I try not to dwell there.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: You know, it's a new day.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: In the same way, I try not to dwell on yesterday's successes.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: It's a new day, new morning mercies.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: You know, I wake up each day just excited.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: I can't believe that I'm awake.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: And I think that I have nothing on my bucket list.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: It's a day to walk with God in simplicity, to reach out to the lost, to love my wife, to lead my kids.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Uh, I know that there's gonna be many people that I'm gonna have to apologize today.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Ray has to do that continually as he hurts people.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: You know, so I for for forget things, right?
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's good to have that short memory.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: However, um God does not want to erase your memory because he desires to erase your record.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: Because he who's forgiven much loves much.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: So preach the gospel to yourself continually and say, but Christ, but God.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: But God who's and I think that that's really kind of where it is.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: So when I'm reminded of what I've done and I see a scar, and there's scars, you know, that that remain in different forms from things and decisions that we've made, you know, it's a battle wound, you know, and and we move forward, and God would still look at us and say, you know, you're you're mine, you're mine, you're twice mine, I made you and now I bought you.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: You think of one of the most probably the most disgusting part of the human body is the feet.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: And God says that beautiful are the feet of those who bring forth good tidings.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: So make it your aim to continually share the gospel, and you're gonna be surprised how much God uses you in spite of you and the things that you've done.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: So forge forward, move forward.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: Good answer.
- 11:02SPEAKER_05: Good one, Mark.
- 11:03SPEAKER_05: You know, there is something that's powerful about having memory of past sins, but knowing that your record is clean.
- 11:09SPEAKER_05: It it keeps you grateful.
- 11:10SPEAKER_05: You know, it helps you moron revel in grace.
- 11:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 11:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 11:13SPEAKER_05: Why are you calling people morons, right?
- 11:15SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 11:16SPEAKER_05: I'm just kissing him.
- 11:18SPEAKER_05: Oh, good one, Mark.
- 11:19SPEAKER_05: Good, good, good stuff.

- 12:11SPEAKER_00: Pine box.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Pine box.

- 12:25SPEAKER_05: This is really cool.
- 12:26SPEAKER_05: Daniel's idea.
- 12:27SPEAKER_06: I think Daniel.
- 12:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's got uh the Ten Commandments on it, and on the back side uh the gospel, but not just that, needgod.com, which sends people to a more thorough gospel presentation.

- 12:51SPEAKER_02: I think the warmth of the tea is.
- 12:53SPEAKER_06: No, no, he didn't depress it.
- 12:55SPEAKER_06: He depressed Mime didn't press.
- 12:56SPEAKER_05: No, he came around and didn't mind too.
- 12:58SPEAKER_05: He did?
- 12:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you're in trouble, Yale.
- 13:00SPEAKER_05: Sorry, trouble.

- 13:16SPEAKER_05: All right, today we're talking about the sin of self-reliance.
- 13:23SPEAKER_05: That makes me kind of shudder.
- 13:24SPEAKER_05: Just that that term self-reliance.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: At what point do we say, I got this?
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: I can do it myself.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: I can see a little kid just saying, I can do it myself.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: Or they go to mommy, mommy, help, mommy, mommy, and to it, I got it.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: I got it.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: And why is that a better thing?
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: Because you can do it.
- 13:46SPEAKER_06: I've got an advantage over you guys.
- 13:48SPEAKER_06: What?
- 13:49SPEAKER_06: An advantage over you guys when it comes to self-reliance.
- 13:51SPEAKER_06: And bartage?
- 13:52SPEAKER_06: Advantage.
- 13:53SPEAKER_06: Oh, there we go.
- 13:54SPEAKER_06: Advantage.
- 13:54SPEAKER_06: I didn't correctly.
- 13:56SPEAKER_06: I've crashed my car four times.
- 13:58SPEAKER_06: So I'm not a self-reliant person.
- 14:00SPEAKER_06: Wait, you went to the fourth?
- 14:01SPEAKER_06: It's reached four?
- 14:02SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I bumped into the um uh uh pellet that was on the No, not today.
- 14:07SPEAKER_06: You're currently I told you about it.
- 14:09SPEAKER_06: Easy, you've got a short-term memory loss.
- 14:11SPEAKER_05: I try to forget those things.
- 14:12SPEAKER_06: But it's things like that I do every day that stop me being self-reliant.
- 14:16SPEAKER_06: You know, it's really good.
- 14:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 14:17SPEAKER_06: It's a blessing.
- 14:18SPEAKER_05: Mark, it's interesting you brought up the point of little kids.
- 14:21SPEAKER_05: You know, our grandsons now had an archer three and five.
- 14:25SPEAKER_05: And I noticed that the other day, that propensity of, I want to do it.
- 14:29SPEAKER_05: Let me do it.
- 14:29SPEAKER_05: Let me try, I want to do it myself.
- 14:30SPEAKER_05: You know, there is that.
- 14:31SPEAKER_06: Isn't that part of growing up?
- 14:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but what is that?
- 14:34SPEAKER_05: You know, like, yeah, I want to show that I can do it.
- 14:37SPEAKER_05: I'm big, I can handle it.
- 14:39SPEAKER_05: I remember uh years ago, I may have shared this before, but I remember uh intentionally setting a heavy box on the ground, and I uh I called Julia in the room.
- 14:48SPEAKER_05: I said, honey, I want you to pick that up and put it, put it on the on the bed.
- 14:51SPEAKER_05: So she comes up and she's like, eh, I mean, this thing's like 20 pounds, you know, she's like four or five.
- 14:56SPEAKER_05: How did you lift it?
- 14:59SPEAKER_05: Oh, you have a good wife.
- 15:03SPEAKER_05: But she's struggling, battling, and she's like, Papa, it's so hard, it's heavy.
- 15:07SPEAKER_05: I go ahead, keep going.
- 15:08SPEAKER_05: She kept till finally she's like, I can't.
- 15:10SPEAKER_05: I said, watch this.
- 15:11SPEAKER_05: And then like a split second, I picked it up, put it on the bed.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: Is this the reason why Julia has so many back issues?
- 15:16SPEAKER_05: You didn't know that.
- 15:18SPEAKER_05: She's an traction.
- 15:19SPEAKER_05: That's a known thing.
- 15:21SPEAKER_05: But I I use that as an illustration.
- 15:22SPEAKER_05: Like, honey, there are things your hands just can't handle.
- 15:25SPEAKER_05: But if you if you call on Papa, I can do it.
- 15:27SPEAKER_05: And I related that, you know, to the Lord.
- 15:29SPEAKER_05: But yeah, man, it's it's a pain.
- 15:31SPEAKER_05: You're gonna say something, Oscar.
- 15:32SPEAKER_05: I don't remember.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: Uh no, I uh well, no, you mentioned Pine Box, which reminds me, I've been getting, I don't like man, listen, you guys.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: The text message marketing, I've been getting one that's trying to sell me a uh what is it called?
- 15:46SPEAKER_06: A casket.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: A casket.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: A casket.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: A casket, yeah.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: To which I replied, that's the last thing I need.
- 15:53SPEAKER_06: Um the last thing people want to do is the last thing they do.
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 15:58SPEAKER_02: Psalm 33, 16 to 17.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: The king is not saved by his great army.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: A warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
- 16:09SPEAKER_02: The war horse is a false hope for salvation, and by its great might it cannot rescue.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: Think about what the psalmist is saying there.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: It's basically listing all of the greatest strengths to an army.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, and it lists them as weaknesses, not strengths.
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: Like the most legitimate asset to a nation is the great army, a warrior's war horse.
- 16:37SPEAKER_02: It's like saying, like, your tanks and your bombs have nothing.
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: Isn't that interesting?
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: That the psalmist would recognize its greatest strengths and say they're actually weaknesses.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: And I think it's important for us to ask the question: what do you look for for deliverance?
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: And if it's anything else besides the strength of God, it is.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: It's self-reliance.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: And I think self-reliance can look two different ways.
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: Self-reliance can look like the guy who's like, I got this, I don't need God.
- 17:06SPEAKER_02: But it can also look like the guy who, you know, I think devotion can often be mistaken for or or uh parade itself as devotion when it's actually self-reliance.
- 17:17SPEAKER_02: Because the the person who relies on his own morality, on his own religiosity to prove his worth to God is also being self-reliant.
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: So uh once again, like we can be self-reliant in the pews as much as we we can be self-reliant in the pig side.
- 17:36SPEAKER_06: I think one of the best illustrations of self-reliance is the way a man um handles instructions when you've got an appliance.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's good.
- 17:43SPEAKER_06: All the time.
- 17:44SPEAKER_06: I do it all the time.
- 17:45SPEAKER_06: You get an appliance, and they actually do it in one-point font.
- 17:48SPEAKER_06: Even my magnifying glass can't say, and then it's in it's in 52 different languages, and you can't even read your own language.
- 17:54SPEAKER_06: And so I try it myself and I never do it, and I have to go back and maybe go to YouTube or something.
- 17:59SPEAKER_06: That's why the world's in such a mess, because it says I don't want to read the instruction book.
- 18:03SPEAKER_06: The world is self-reliant, and look at the mess, it's in every area.
- 18:07SPEAKER_06: It's uh because of self-reliance rather than reliance on God.
- 18:10SPEAKER_06: I think the word reliance is another word for trust, too, isn't it?
- 18:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:14SPEAKER_05: It's dependence, you know.
- 18:16SPEAKER_05: And uh, you know, it's crazy speaking of instructions, like I always know it's from another country because even in English, the instructions don't and they're full of typos and pick up the phone.
- 18:29SPEAKER_06: Yeah, pick up the phone.
- 18:31SPEAKER_05: You know, Oscar, you you brought up something that triggers something in my mind.
- 18:35SPEAKER_05: We don't see this as self-reliance per se, but you you said, like, who do you go to or what do you go to, what do you turn to?
- 18:43SPEAKER_05: And there is an element of self-reliance through self-medicating.
- 18:48SPEAKER_05: I mean, you think about that, right?
- 18:50SPEAKER_05: Because like that that's the issue, right?
- 18:52SPEAKER_05: You have a problem, you have a struggle, there's something heavy in your life, and oftentimes people will become self-reliant by trying to find relief through different things versus running to the Lord.
- 19:06SPEAKER_05: And that's a form of self-reliance, you know.
- 19:08SPEAKER_05: Like, I mean, think about it.
- 19:09SPEAKER_05: How many leaders have we heard about who have turned to alcohol?
- 19:13SPEAKER_05: Uh recently I was reading an article that blew my mind from a very, very famous, prominent Christian leader.
- 19:19SPEAKER_05: Well, this is public, it was Max Lukato.
- 19:22SPEAKER_05: Um, there was an article that that he he had contributed to where he talked about how for a number of years he was going uh like on a weekly basis, parking his car uh in an area far from where he was at and getting a can of beer and sitting in his car with a bag over it and just and downing it to numb himself because he was under so much pressure and and struggling with you know with so much.
- 19:45SPEAKER_05: And you know, he was humble enough to be open about it, you know, and and he got the help he needed and got through that.
- 19:51SPEAKER_05: But but that happens, you know, you see leaders doing that sort of thing, or turning to drugs or to or or to sexual morality.
- 19:59SPEAKER_05: I mean, we see that with a lot of leaders, especially with pornography, and but that's what that is.
- 20:02SPEAKER_05: It's it's a it's pressure, it's intensity, but we're not running to the Lord.
- 20:08SPEAKER_06: Alcohol is held up as a as a help uh so often in so many different ways.
- 20:12SPEAKER_06: I I love watching old movies where the cowboys come into the bar and they say, give me a whiskey.
- 20:16SPEAKER_06: And they put the whiskey in and he go, and he goes, Like it's poison and it tastes horrible.
- 20:23SPEAKER_06: When I was a kid, maybe nine years old, we had a bar, bar in our in our living room where my dad had a whole lot of sort of fancy booze things, and then I used to sneak in.
- 20:31SPEAKER_06: I was really short and couldn't be seen.
- 20:33SPEAKER_06: So I was in the bar and try at the whiskey and the vodka, and nobody knew.
- 20:38SPEAKER_06: And I'll never touch vodka again.
- 20:39SPEAKER_06: It tastes like perfume, it was disgusting.
- 20:42SPEAKER_06: Whiskey burned, and so I think every kid should be left in a bar for an hour and say, try this.
- 20:48SPEAKER_06: I'm kidding.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: I would I love the idea of like your dad going, Oh no, that was perfume, I tricked you to teach you a lesson.
- 20:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know, that's funny.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, make it as gross as possible, all that stuff for your kids.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: We grew up with uh we had a bar at our house as well.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: Wow, yeah, it was my my dad's bar, and he had a couple of chairs, and from house to house we would move, and it was just filled with liquor.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: And I was always afraid to go back there and and drink it.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: Afraid?
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was always afraid.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: We have a bar at our house.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: It's a coffee bar.
- 21:17SPEAKER_05: Surprise, surprise.
- 21:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 21:19SPEAKER_05: Um, Mark, I'd love to get your thoughts on this.
- 21:21SPEAKER_05: What would you say is a difference between biblical responsibility and self-reliance?
- 21:28SPEAKER_05: Because right, we the pendulum swings.
- 21:30SPEAKER_05: There are extremes, right?
- 21:32SPEAKER_05: Because we are called to be responsible.
- 21:34SPEAKER_05: In fact, our pastor just recently taught on that in terms of hey, you you have a calling to walk in obedience and responsibility, but but there is a difference between that and self-reliance.
- 21:43SPEAKER_05: What do you think about that?
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: This is a very good question.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: And I see it kind of going hand in hand with what's the point of prayer, right?
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: If God is sovereign and God's gonna do what he wants to do, why do we pray?
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: Well, and I think that there is uh a responsibility of man whereby which God has chosen, and I'm gonna use this word and I'll explain what I mean, handcuffed himself uh to do certain things or not to do certain things based upon uh what man's response is.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: Let me explain.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: God wants to save people, God's gonna save people.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: Do babies go to heaven?
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: The elect babies go to heaven.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: Who's uh who do who's part of that?
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: So who do we share the gospel with?
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: Everybody, every creature.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: Does God know who's gonna be there?
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: Well, can't God just put the handwriting on the wall?
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: Can't he make the rocks cry out?
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: Can't he make he can do what he wants.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: But he has chosen to do certain things based upon man's actions.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: So God has chosen to save people by people.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: That that is that is the instrument.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: How will they hear unless a preacher is sent?
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: So we're going out tonight.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: Oscar and I were going down to Huntington Beach tonight, at the Huntington Beach Pier.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: And we are going to set up a table in Yale.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: Our cameraman's going to be there.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: Eddie's going to be there.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: And we are going to engage in conversation with people.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: It is much easier to just stay home with our smoking hot wives.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: Your wife smokes?
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: And to just hang out there, as opposed to going down to the beach where who knows what's going to happen.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: So God, God has chosen to use us.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: So there is a responsibility of us.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, get out of bed.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: Yep, open up your Bible.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: Yep, go to work.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: Well, God's going to provide all of my needs according to his riches in Christ Jesus.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: Why do I need to work?
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: Because the means by which he's going to provide for you is by you going to work.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: If you don't provide for your family, you're worse than an infidel.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: So we have this responsibility to put one foot in front of the other concerning everything.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: And now God will lead you, He'll guide you with His eye.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: He'll direct your steps and He delights in your way.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: So the responsibility, though we think it's on us, well, no, God's not calling us to be fruitful but faithful, to go out there and have faith, choosing to believe God is going to do a work.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: So what is our responsibility?
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: Move forward.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: Engage in the conversation.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: Leave the results to God.
- 24:24SPEAKER_06: Let me share a frustration, and it's a very real frustration.
- 24:26SPEAKER_06: I am frustrated that God has chosen the foolishness of preaching to save those that believe, that He's chosen such weak, weak vessels when the world's going to hell.
- 24:35SPEAKER_06: I want God to rend the heavens and speak to humanity and scare the living daylights out of them.
- 24:40SPEAKER_06: And Jeremiah said the same thing.
- 24:42SPEAKER_06: Oh, that you'd ran the heavens and come down, that the nations would tremble at your presence.
- 24:47SPEAKER_06: So here we are, going to Huntington Beach tonight, sitting at a table, hoping someone comes when the world's going to hell and we've got the message of everlasting life.
- 24:54SPEAKER_06: And that's incredibly frustrating.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: I think the way I would answer the question is when things get tough, what do you depend on?
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: Your plan or a prayer?
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: Is it a plan or is it a prayer?
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: You know, when your finances get tight, do you immediately go to your plan on saving or your plan on making more money, or do you go to prayer?
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: When that phone call, that unexpected phone call comes in, do you go to a plan or do you go to prayer?
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: What is the thing that you depend on most?
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: And that's not to diminish planning.
- 25:29SPEAKER_02: As you mentioned, like we the Lord has called us to participate.
- 25:33SPEAKER_02: No one, you know, can you imagine the slothful man sitting there going, Oh, Lord, deliver me a job, deliver me a job, but has yet to put together a resume or uh or sent it out to anybody.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: Can you imagine the person who's like, Lord, save my family, save my family, and they've yet to proclaim the gospel to their family.
- 25:50SPEAKER_06: There's a lion in the street.
- 25:51SPEAKER_06: Have you seen that problem?
- 25:52SPEAKER_06: There's a lion in the street?
- 25:53SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:54SPEAKER_06: It's like any excuse.
- 25:55SPEAKER_06: So I stay at home.
- 25:56SPEAKER_06: It could be a lion in the street.
- 25:57SPEAKER_06: Oh, that's right.
- 25:58SPEAKER_06: That sort of thing.
- 25:58SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 25:59SPEAKER_06: It's one of the proverbs.
- 26:00SPEAKER_06: Solomon said it in chapter person.
- 26:01SPEAKER_06: Did you change it?
- 26:03SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: We have to, we have to go.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: So I think in regards to self-reliance, it's recognizing that we truly are dependent on God as we make the plan.
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: But before we make the plan, we spend our time in prayer to remind ourselves of how dependent we are on the Lord.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: I once heard someone explain it like this.
- 26:21SPEAKER_02: It's a great metaphor.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: I've probably used it on the podcast before, in which they said it's like, you know, what is, this was for business development, but the the idea was like when you go sailing, it is the wind that moves you to the direction you want to go.
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: And yet you still need to cat, you still need to do the work of casting your sails in the right direction that propels you in the direction that you ought to go.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: And in that same way, it doesn't matter how good of a sailor I am, if the wind isn't moving, I'm going nowhere, right?
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: The wind, of course, in this metaphor is the spirit, it's the Holy Spirit.
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: It's God's plan.
- 26:58SPEAKER_02: But my workmanship, my effort, my planning is of course me casting this sail according to the directions of the Lord.
- 27:06SPEAKER_06: So you can actually sail into the wind.
- 27:09SPEAKER_06: You can?
- 27:09SPEAKER_06: Isn't that weird?
- 27:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:10SPEAKER_06: It's um I used I I went sailing when I was about 13.
- 27:14SPEAKER_06: And then surfing came along and wrecked the whole thing.
- 27:16SPEAKER_06: But I wasn't a little what's called a P class, which is a very, very small yacht.
- 27:20SPEAKER_05: Why not the best of both worlds, right?
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: Or parasurfing or what are they called?
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: Surf sailing.
- 27:27SPEAKER_02: I don't like that.
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: Nah, I don't like that.
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: Windsurfing.
- 27:29SPEAKER_05: That's what it's called.
- 27:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know, I a person came to mind as you were talking, Oscar, about you know, a plan or a prayer.
- 27:37SPEAKER_05: And this this brother in particular, I just can remember so many scenarios when something would come up and there's a problem, and immediately go, let's pray.
- 27:47SPEAKER_05: Always let's pray.
- 27:49SPEAKER_05: What?
- 27:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'll don't yawn when the easy thing is nothing to do with easy.
- 27:54SPEAKER_05: Um and but I love that.
- 27:56SPEAKER_05: You know, it it's that I love that being the default response.
- 28:00SPEAKER_05: It's almost like mu uh uh muscle memory.
- 28:03SPEAKER_05: You know, you've trained yourself to where I go to the Lord, I go to the Lord.
- 28:07SPEAKER_05: A lot of times you won't be able to do it out loud for different reasons or with another person.
- 28:10SPEAKER_05: But if in our hearts we learn to pray without ceasing, right?
- 28:14SPEAKER_05: To just turn our gaze toward the Lord and just say, Lord, help me, give me wisdom, give me direction in this, you know.
- 28:19SPEAKER_05: I've talked before about the John 3.16 syndrome where we're so familiar with it, we can quote it forwards, backwards in our sleep that we lose the significance of it, right?
- 28:28SPEAKER_05: We just come kind of become blinded to it.
- 28:30SPEAKER_05: But I think Proverbs 3, 5 through 6 is one of those syndromes.
- 28:34SPEAKER_05: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths.
- 28:41SPEAKER_05: There's prayer and paths, right?
- 28:43SPEAKER_05: Trust in the Lord, he'll direct your paths, you know.
- 28:46SPEAKER_05: And I think this is lost on us oftentimes.
- 28:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, trust the Lord, but like, no, anybody anybody.
- 28:55SPEAKER_06: But no, we can't.
- 28:57SPEAKER_06: You can have a Bible where you'll read it like that and then say, no, no, no, that's not right.
- 29:01SPEAKER_06: This is what we should do.
- 29:03SPEAKER_06: We should do that.
- 29:04SPEAKER_06: But I think the emphasis is that is lean not on your under own understanding.
- 29:09SPEAKER_06: Don't go that way.
- 29:10SPEAKER_06: You know, you're in Lion's Den.
- 29:12SPEAKER_06: You you your own understanding is get me out of here right now.
- 29:14SPEAKER_06: Stop it.
- 29:15SPEAKER_06: No, just trust the Lord.
- 29:16SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 29:17SPEAKER_06: With all your heart.
- 29:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 29:19SPEAKER_05: Oscar, what's it mean to trust the Lord?
- 29:22SPEAKER_05: Like, how how does that play out practically?
- 29:26SPEAKER_05: Again, it's one of those things that we we're all familiar with, yeah, trust God, just trust God, whether trust God.
- 29:29SPEAKER_05: But how does that play out?
- 29:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think trusting the Lord ultimately is trusting the outcome, right?
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: Like I can trust the Lord because I have a part, I can trust the Lord in thinking He's gonna deliver the outcome I want.
- 29:45SPEAKER_02: But I think trusting the Lord is ultimately no matter the outcome, that is within God's sovereign plan.
- 29:50SPEAKER_02: And if that outcome is uncomfortable for me, it might be uncomfortable to it it might disrupt my comfort, but the Lord is doing something in my character.
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: And so, you know, if it's like, man, I'm I'm trusting the Lord with with whatever it might be, with my finances, and things get really tight and things continue to get worse.
- 30:09SPEAKER_02: Trusting the Lord looks like on the other side of that, not getting what you want and going, thank you, Lord.
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: This is your will for my life, and you are doing something in and through it.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: You are teaching me something in the midst of this outcome that looks hard for me.
- 30:22SPEAKER_02: It wasn't part of my plan, but ultimately it's a part of your plan.
- 30:25SPEAKER_02: Love it.
- 30:26SPEAKER_06: Well, so often, sorry, go on.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: No, say that's so good.
- 30:29SPEAKER_06: No, reverberated scripture gives me really good.
- 30:32SPEAKER_06: Really good Shadrach and his buddies.
- 30:34SPEAKER_06: That's uh whatever the outcome is.
- 30:36SPEAKER_06: It's not gonna be a good outcome.
- 30:37SPEAKER_06: Whatever happens, we'll trust the Lord.
- 30:39SPEAKER_06: Same with um Mary and Martha.
- 30:41SPEAKER_07: Wow.
- 30:41SPEAKER_06: That they Jesus didn't do what they thought he would do, what he should do, you know.
- 30:46SPEAKER_06: I mean, that's leaning to your understanding.
- 30:49SPEAKER_06: Jesus, come now.
- 30:50SPEAKER_06: You love Lazarus, come now.
- 30:52SPEAKER_06: Wow.
- 30:52SPEAKER_06: Makes no sense to stay where you are.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: That's ultimately what Job said, right, though.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: He slept me.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna trust him.
- 30:57SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 30:57SPEAKER_05: I'm glad you brought up uh Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in that when they were standing before Nebuchadnezzar, right?
- 31:02SPEAKER_05: We've talked about it, where they said to him, We have no need to answer you concerning this matter, O Nebuchadnezzar.
- 31:07SPEAKER_05: They said, Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us, but even if he doesn't, we still won't bow.
- 31:12SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 31:13SPEAKER_05: But Mark, Oscar spoke to character as it relates to us.
- 31:17SPEAKER_05: But but how much is that trust in the Lord based on his character?
- 31:21SPEAKER_05: I mean, they said, our God, whom we serve, right?
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the more you know God, the more you rely upon God, right?
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: You you think of the these trials that we go through.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: We could not have gone through these trials 20 years ago.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: And you see the trials that our kids are going through, you especially, Oscar, you you can relate to this because your kids are a lot younger, that you're able to see them go through a trial and it's like the biggest thing in the world.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: And you're now quietly, after walking with God for X amount of years, just kind of going, you're gonna be fine.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: I know what this is gonna be, this is gonna build so much character in you.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: You know, my daughter Ella, who is she's very careful, she's overly cautious.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: Uh, she was talked into going uh wakeboarding with her um boyfriend's family.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: And as she goes out, she decides that, you know, I'm actually gonna get out of the boat and I'm gonna go wakeboarding.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: And as she's going wakeboarding, she falls weird off of the surfboard, whatever it's called, the wakeboard, and it the board goes flying up, it slashes her head, and now she has to go to the ER, get staples put inside of her head.
- 32:29SPEAKER_00: She got uh, I think 10 staples uh put inside of her head.
- 32:32SPEAKER_07: One maybe just a moment.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: Um and uh now she's saying, you know, what if it leaves a scar?
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: Well, then now you have a story.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: But what what what if uh she actually hit me up yesterday?
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: Aren't you don't you think you might be a little bit insensitive?
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: I said, I am sorry, you know, I'm not like easy.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: And but but here's the thing, right?
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: All the issues and things inside of our life are not issues, they're just stepping stones to get our attention, to get us to walk in that straight and narrow path, for God to do what he's always wanted to do.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: The mistake is we plant our roots down deep.
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: And we want him to go down deep because we are in love with this world.
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: We want comfort.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: We want to be able to do it ourselves.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: We want to be able to say, I did that.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: But um, I think John 15, apart from me, you can do nothing.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: Oh, great.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: You know, there's nothing.
- 33:29SPEAKER_06: Add the verse next, and you say that, Matt.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: What are you gonna say with that verse though, right?
- 33:33SPEAKER_06: Um we can do nothing without him.
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: Just quote the verse, right?
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, what do we have that we have not received?
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: You're gonna take that one off as well.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: No, no, it's good, Mark.
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: Let's keep going.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: Um, everything we possess is is borrowed from God.
- 33:47SPEAKER_00: Everything.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: So not just our possessions, but that trial.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: It's on loan, because it's not permanent, right?
- 33:56SPEAKER_00: It's it's working in us, and it's going to perform a work inside of us that we want ultimately to work inside of us.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: You want that trial, you need that trial, right?
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: You want that inside there because God sees something that you don't see, because a self-reliant man is not a man who calls on the Lord.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, is not praying.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: You know, when we would go out witnessing, I remember when I'd first see Ray preach, I would ask him, Ray, are you nervous?
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: And he'd say, Of course I am.
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: But a nervous man is a praying man.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: And yet you do it anyways.
- 34:34SPEAKER_00: You you swallow your fears and you do it anyways.
- 34:38SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 34:38SPEAKER_05: Oh man, Mark, that that brought to mind uh 1 Corinthians 4 7.
- 34:42SPEAKER_05: For who makes you differ from another?
- 34:44SPEAKER_05: And what do you have that you did not receive?
- 34:48SPEAKER_05: Now, if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as though you had not received it?
- 34:52SPEAKER_05: I mean, the point there is what what do you possess that wasn't given to you by God?
- 34:58SPEAKER_05: But if it's given to you by God, why do you act as if though it wasn't and it's somehow something that you produced in yourself?
- 35:04SPEAKER_06: So I think that every time I look in the mirror, I think I mustn't get proud.
- 35:07SPEAKER_06: This is a gift from God.
- 35:09SPEAKER_05: It's from you, Lord.
- 35:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 35:11SPEAKER_05: And and again, I've spoken to this before, and that's that uh oftentimes we make the mistake of saying, Lord, help me not to do this in my own strength.
- 35:19SPEAKER_05: The deception is that we think we have strength of our own.
- 35:22SPEAKER_05: We don't.
- 35:22SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 35:23SPEAKER_05: Anything we do is from the strength of the Lord.
- 35:25SPEAKER_05: And our problem is we're not recognizing that and and walking in that.
- 35:29SPEAKER_02: I think a good question to ask yourselves, especially considering that we kind of open with Psalm 33, which is, what is your war horse?
- 35:36SPEAKER_02: The psalmist recognizes that his war horse, one of its greatest, you know, David recognizes one of his greatest military strength is actually a weakness if he's not depending on the Lord.
- 35:45SPEAKER_02: And so what is your war horse?
- 35:48SPEAKER_02: Is it your beauty?
- 35:51SPEAKER_02: Is it your comfort?
- 35:52SPEAKER_02: Is it your power?
- 35:54SPEAKER_02: Is it your reputation, the way people think about you?
- 35:57SPEAKER_02: What is the thing that you are relying on to make you feel safe, successful, and control, um, d determine it over your own life and plans?
- 36:07SPEAKER_02: What is that war horse?
- 36:09SPEAKER_02: And I would challenge you to bring that before the Lord, uh, to lay it on his altar and let him catch it a fire.
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: Because if we are relying on anything else but the Lord, it is an idol ultimately.
- 36:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's right.
- 36:22SPEAKER_05: I love this uh passage in Jeremiah 17, five through eight.
- 36:26SPEAKER_05: Thus says the Lord, cursed is a man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord, for he shall be like a shrub in the desert and shall not see when good comes, but shall inhabit the perched parched places in the wilderness in a salt land which is not inhabited.
- 36:44SPEAKER_05: Blessed is a man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is in the Lord, for he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes, but its leaf will be green and will not be anxious in the year of drought.
- 37:00SPEAKER_05: He got that from Psalms from yielding fruit.
- 37:04SPEAKER_05: I love that.
- 37:05SPEAKER_05: Blessed is a man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is in the Lord.
- 37:10SPEAKER_05: Amen.
- 37:11SPEAKER_05: You know, we have to remember that and and discipline ourselves to run to the Lord and to make him our hope.
- 37:16SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, Ray.
- 37:18SPEAKER_05: Oh, whose phone was that?
- 37:21SPEAKER_06: My phone is off.
- 37:23SPEAKER_06: Now it is.
- 37:25SPEAKER_06: Um the scripture goes even further.
- 37:27SPEAKER_06: He who trusts his own heart is a fool.
- 37:28SPEAKER_06: Mark and I have done a lot of sleight of hand.
- 37:31SPEAKER_06: It's not magic over the years.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: Wait, why?
- 37:33SPEAKER_06: And it's slightly no, it's not magic.
- 37:35SPEAKER_00: No, I'm making the thing, I'm actually making the things disappear.
- 37:39SPEAKER_06: But it it's so great to do a little sleight of hand, and anyone can learn it, can learn online, and then just say to people, you know, the Bible says if you trust your own heart, you're a fool.
- 37:46SPEAKER_06: If you trust your ears, trust your eyes, and then take them through that test.
- 37:49SPEAKER_06: How many of each animal did Moses take into the ark, etc.?
- 37:52SPEAKER_06: And it really shows people they shouldn't rely on themselves because we're prone to error.
- 37:56SPEAKER_06: The man who put the eraser on the end of the pencil knew what he was doing.
- 38:01SPEAKER_05: Ray, earlier you referenced uh seeing old Westerns and guys, you know, throwing back a vodka or whatever.
- 38:08SPEAKER_05: Um Western culture does seem to revel in self-reliance.
- 38:13SPEAKER_05: Kind of that whole John Wayne, fifty arrows in his back, whatever.
- 38:17SPEAKER_02: What does John Wayne sound like?
- 38:24SPEAKER_02: The Lebanese John Wayne is El C.
- 38:30SPEAKER_05: His Elvis is worse.
- 38:33SPEAKER_05: But Ray, what what is it that that drives Western culture to be so self-reliant?
- 38:39SPEAKER_06: I have no idea.
- 38:41SPEAKER_06: Um it's actually it's money.
- 38:45SPEAKER_06: You hold up someone like John Wayne, and what guy doesn't want to be like John Wayne to walk in and just say, get out of my way, hit people in the face and there's no comeback sort of thing.
- 38:58SPEAKER_06: But it's just the way they know it.
- 38:59SPEAKER_06: And one thing that bugs me about television, you go and visit someone in a movie, you see someone comes to visit some first thing you can do is get a drink.
- 39:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 39:07SPEAKER_06: Would you like a drink?
- 39:08SPEAKER_06: And they get out the whiskey and they throw it back and they all smile.
- 39:10SPEAKER_06: And one thing I'm asking.
- 39:13SPEAKER_02: I'm just imagining the modern day cowboys like, I'll take a matcha.
- 39:18SPEAKER_06: That would change things a little.
- 39:20SPEAKER_06: Um but one thing I absolutely abhor is actors acting drunk.
- 39:25SPEAKER_06: It's just it just makes me feel sick.
- 39:27SPEAKER_06: And and and they're always shown as being happy and gay and sorry.
- 39:32SPEAKER_06: They're always shown as being happy, and yet I'd like them to show a guy throwing up in a corner, which is what alcohol really does to so many people.
- 39:39SPEAKER_06: It makes them sick because it's a poison.
- 39:41SPEAKER_02: Easy, you asked a very profound question, I hate to admit it.
- 39:47SPEAKER_02: And it gets to it gets at the heart of what we're talking about here, which is it's it's really a cultural apologetic, is what you just got into.
- 39:55SPEAKER_02: What is it about that Western way of looking?
- 39:59SPEAKER_02: Not just the cowboy thing, but if you think about it, Americans.
- 40:02SPEAKER_02: Like our entire national um story is about independence, freeing ourselves from an oppressor king.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: You know, the reason why whiskey, I don't know if you guys know this or not, but the reason why whiskey and bourbon is the American drink is because in England you raised your own corn, you would keep what you needed for your own family, and then you'd have to give the rest away to the king.
- 40:25SPEAKER_02: But then when those corn farmers came to the United States, they would raise their corn, they keep it for themselves, and the excess they would celebrate by making whiskey and bourbon.
- 40:35SPEAKER_02: It was kind of like their way of declaring and celebrating their own independence.
- 40:39SPEAKER_02: That's exactly right.
- 40:40SPEAKER_02: And so, in many ways, we are all libertarian.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: Uh, I don't mean liberal, I mean libertarian.
- 40:46SPEAKER_02: We have a hyper-libertarian view of ourselves.
- 40:50SPEAKER_02: We are, we ought to be free from a king, we ought to be free and independent from a nation, from our state.
- 40:57SPEAKER_02: Get out of our way, let us live our own lives, let us do it our way.
- 41:02SPEAKER_02: And that often falls even into our experience with our own family.
- 41:07SPEAKER_02: If you think about history, most human beings grew up recognizing that they were codependent, not only on their families, their households, right?
- 41:16SPEAKER_02: You lived and worked in the same household.
- 41:19SPEAKER_02: You were all, if your dad was a farmer, your brothers and sisters and and mom were all farming together, right?
- 41:26SPEAKER_02: So the household had this codependence.
- 41:29SPEAKER_02: And then every individual city depended on each other.
- 41:32SPEAKER_02: You had one farmer, you had one shoemaker, you had one carpenter.
- 41:36SPEAKER_02: There was a sense of codependence.
- 41:39SPEAKER_02: You couldn't do life without the people around you.
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: And most definitely, you could not do life without God.
- 41:46SPEAKER_02: But because of our hyper-libertarian view, the American condition is that we got this.
- 41:53SPEAKER_02: I can do it on my own.
- 41:55SPEAKER_02: I don't need my nation.
- 41:56SPEAKER_02: I don't need my get out of my get out of my business.
- 41:59SPEAKER_02: Don't tell me how to live my life.
- 42:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, my family, thanks for raising me.
- 42:03SPEAKER_02: I got it from here.
- 42:05SPEAKER_02: God, thanks for the breath in my lungs, I got it from here.
- 42:08SPEAKER_02: It's foolishness.
- 42:09SPEAKER_02: We do have this American condition that we are John Wayne.
- 42:13SPEAKER_02: We got it, doesn't matter if we have 20 arrows in our back, we got it.
- 42:16SPEAKER_02: And it's it's a farce.
- 42:18SPEAKER_02: It really is.
- 42:19SPEAKER_02: You cannot live your life on your own.
- 42:24SPEAKER_02: And the beauty of the gospel is you weren't meant to live your life on your own.
- 42:28SPEAKER_02: Life is so much more enjoyable and beautiful depending on other people.
- 42:34SPEAKER_02: Uh, because then you know who you are in that context, you know who you're loved by.
- 42:38SPEAKER_02: And as we know, living life dependent on the Lord is such a great joy to know that the creator of the universe is looking after me.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: What a what a beautiful idea that I'm not alone.
- 42:53SPEAKER_02: How about that?
- 42:54SPEAKER_02: I am not my own.
- 42:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I've been bought with the price.
- 42:59SPEAKER_02: Isn't that a better gospel than the American gospel we have out there today?
- 43:03SPEAKER_06: You see, that's what I was gonna say.
- 43:05SPEAKER_06: Umsu, you are a bucket of knowledge.
- 43:10SPEAKER_06: I just got a drip in the bucket.
- 43:11SPEAKER_06: That was just incredible.
- 43:12SPEAKER_05: That's so good.
- 43:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know, and and that's the thing, right?
- 43:16SPEAKER_05: Like it's evidenced by the fact that oftentimes you'll talk to unbelievers and you'll hear them say stuff like, God didn't do this for me.
- 43:25SPEAKER_05: I used my own brain and my own hands.
- 43:27SPEAKER_05: I'm like, that's okay, where did you get those from?
- 43:29SPEAKER_05: That goes back to what you have that you didn't receive.
- 43:31SPEAKER_05: But I'll tell you guys what what's poetic to me because dependence on the Lord doesn't just mean you run to the Lord per se, obviously it includes that, but it also means you do things God's way and you depend on the means that God has supplied for different things.
- 43:49SPEAKER_05: And to me, in that vein, one of the most poetic things is when someone goes to other believers for counsel and advice and input, and also for feedback on their own life, like, hey man, do you see this in me?
- 44:05SPEAKER_05: Or or or do you do you recognize something that needs to change in my life?
- 44:11SPEAKER_05: But but going to other believers and saying, hey, what do you think about this?
- 44:14SPEAKER_05: Can you give me some counsel or input?
- 44:16SPEAKER_05: It's showing, hey, we're doing it God's way.
- 44:18SPEAKER_05: So scripture is clear.
- 44:19SPEAKER_05: Without counsel plans are frustrated, but with many counselors they succeed.
- 44:24SPEAKER_05: And a multitude of counselors is safety and wisdom.
- 44:27SPEAKER_05: You know, and so so that's that that's really key.
- 44:31SPEAKER_05: Uh Mark, you know, sometimes I think we we learn how to posture as believers.
- 44:38SPEAKER_05: We we learn how to play the game and can appear to be really mature as Christians and and really kind of be dependent on the Lord, but really not be.
- 44:47SPEAKER_05: Um what are some of the telltale signs that someone really, even in their private life, isn't depending on the Lord?
- 44:53SPEAKER_05: You know, we talked recently about the the um really wild quote quote preacher um Steve Anderson, and he was he was like On this crazy rant about people coming after him and he's had enough and and he's like he's angry with God.
- 45:11SPEAKER_05: Come on, God, can't you throw me a bone?
- 45:13SPEAKER_05: You know, and so it it and that guy people think, oh, he's such a powerful preacher.
- 45:17SPEAKER_05: I mean, people that really don't understand things theologically, but that appearance versus reality.
- 45:22SPEAKER_00: How do we discern when somebody doesn't receive direction, conviction?
- 45:29SPEAKER_00: When you're trying to communicate to someone and there's nothing you can say to them that they they got this.
- 45:35SPEAKER_00: They're so self-reliant, right?
- 45:37SPEAKER_00: We have to remember that the gospel begins with a confession.
- 45:41SPEAKER_00: I can't do this.
- 45:43SPEAKER_00: I I can't get to heaven on my own.
- 45:45SPEAKER_00: The gospel begins with a confession, and somehow we begin to think that sanctification now entirely belongs to us.
- 45:53SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 45:53SPEAKER_00: So God saved me and now I got it from here.
- 45:56SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 45:57SPEAKER_00: Maybe we begin to think of that because of the workforce, right?
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: We get trained to be able to do a task and they go, all right, now I'm gonna leave you on your own.
- 46:04SPEAKER_00: You're gonna be able to do this on your own.
- 46:06SPEAKER_00: And maybe that's the way we learned how to swim as well.
- 46:09SPEAKER_00: You get thrown inside the deep end, you know, swim or die.
- 46:12SPEAKER_00: You know, it's just kind of the way it is.
- 46:13SPEAKER_00: I think some of the telltale signs when you That's how you raise your kids.
- 46:17SPEAKER_00: That's how we raise your kids.
- 46:18SPEAKER_06: That's a great scar across your face.
- 46:20SPEAKER_06: That's a good story for you.
- 46:21SPEAKER_06: Swim or die, and you go.
- 46:23SPEAKER_06: Come on, putting you on the road, see if you can dodge these cars.
- 46:29SPEAKER_00: Are you done?
- 46:31SPEAKER_00: I'm still thinking.
- 46:35SPEAKER_00: Thank you, Bono.
- 46:36SPEAKER_00: You know, Galatians 2.3.
- 46:38SPEAKER_00: I can handle it.
- 46:39SPEAKER_00: It says, having begun by the spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?
- 46:46SPEAKER_00: We can never outgrow our helplessness.
- 46:50SPEAKER_00: We begin to think, hey, I I've I've got it here.
- 46:53SPEAKER_00: No, you you don't have it here.
- 46:55SPEAKER_00: You should just become more aware that you don't have it together.
- 47:00SPEAKER_00: And so therefore, you should be able to receive correction from anybody that comes your way.
- 47:07SPEAKER_00: We don't have it together.
- 47:09SPEAKER_00: We trust Christ to forgive us of our sins, and then we rely upon ourselves to now conquer anything new that comes our way.
- 47:18SPEAKER_00: No, allow people to come inside your life to be able to speak.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: Don't be so quick to talk.
- 47:25SPEAKER_00: And this is a rule inside of our house that when there's a disagreement between the two people, you have lost control of the discussion when you are trying to over talk someone when they're not done yet.
- 47:43SPEAKER_00: Allow them to speak, skip a beat.
- 47:46SPEAKER_00: Now give your rebuttal, give your reasoning.
- 47:48SPEAKER_00: But if you're looking to talk while they're still talking, you're not listening.
- 47:52SPEAKER_00: Well, we kind of do with that, huh?
- 47:54SPEAKER_06: You agree with that.
- 47:56SPEAKER_00: With what?
- 47:57SPEAKER_06: Over talking people, it's wrong.
- 47:58SPEAKER_06: What do you mean?
- 47:59SPEAKER_06: Carry on.
- 47:59SPEAKER_06: Amen.
- 48:00SPEAKER_06: What?
- 48:03SPEAKER_06: Poor Mark.
- 48:05SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna say something if you don't carry on right now.
- 48:09SPEAKER_06: With what?
- 48:10SPEAKER_06: What happened when we traveled once?
- 48:13SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you really want me to say?
- 48:15SPEAKER_06: There's no way you would.
- 48:16SPEAKER_06: I just know you would.
- 48:19SPEAKER_04: Don't test it, Mark.
- 48:21SPEAKER_04: You know better.
- 48:22SPEAKER_04: Okay, let's do it.
- 48:23SPEAKER_06: You've got to remember how you've got to remember how dumb I am.
- 48:26SPEAKER_00: There's no possible I would bet easy salvation.
- 48:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you would.
- 48:31SPEAKER_05: You would.
- 48:32SPEAKER_05: Uh let's shift gears here.
- 48:34SPEAKER_05: Aspurgeon said one of the most powerful things.
- 48:37SPEAKER_05: We've quoted it before.
- 48:38SPEAKER_05: I have learned to kiss the wave that throws me against the rock of age.
- 48:44SPEAKER_06: I've never heard that.
- 48:45SPEAKER_06: You've never heard that?
- 48:46SPEAKER_06: No.
- 48:46SPEAKER_00: We've quoted it like a hundred times.
- 48:48SPEAKER_06: I never listened to you guys.
- 48:49SPEAKER_06: Sleep on this thing.
- 48:50SPEAKER_05: No, I've never listened to the podcast.
- 48:52SPEAKER_05: Ray, speak to that.
- 48:53SPEAKER_05: Could you just say it again?
- 48:55SPEAKER_05: To kiss the wave that throws me against the rock of age.
- 48:58SPEAKER_06: You're going to get salty lips.
- 48:59SPEAKER_06: That's how I see it, is an excerpt for it.
- 49:01SPEAKER_06: But Ray, you Yeah, yeah, it uh it was good for me that I was afflicted that might learn your statutes.
- 49:06SPEAKER_06: And I've got to look back at the most fiery trials I've been through, and they're nothing compared to people I know now that are going through through fiery trials.
- 49:14SPEAKER_06: But I've got to say it was good for me.
- 49:16SPEAKER_06: It set my roots in deeper, is the parable of the soul.
- 49:20SPEAKER_06: When the sun comes out, the roots go in deep, searching for moisture.
- 49:22SPEAKER_06: And that's what lions' dens tend to do.
- 49:25SPEAKER_06: Um, that's what Red Seas tend to do.
- 49:27SPEAKER_06: And I think it's very ironic that this these Soutis in the Middle East are trying to close up the Red Sea, and we want God to open it.
- 49:36SPEAKER_06: It's happening again.
- 49:37SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that's right.
- 49:38SPEAKER_06: Open the Red Sea.
- 49:39SPEAKER_06: The Hooties?
- 49:40SPEAKER_06: Hooties.
- 49:41SPEAKER_06: I said Sutis, did I?
- 49:42SPEAKER_06: I could start a war.
- 49:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I was gonna say that's gonna throw us into war.
- 49:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Oscar uh Martin Lloyd Jones said something I love as well.
- 49:50SPEAKER_05: He said, the Christian life is not merely difficult, it is impossible apart from the grace of God.
- 49:56SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 49:57SPEAKER_05: And that's brilliant to me, right?
- 50:00SPEAKER_05: It was we talk about oh, Christian life's no, it's impossible.
- 50:04SPEAKER_05: We need the grace of God.
- 50:06SPEAKER_05: And Paul said to Timothy, you therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
- 50:12SPEAKER_05: Speak to that.
- 50:13SPEAKER_05: The the importance of dependence on the grace of God.
- 50:16SPEAKER_06: Also, when you speak to Oscar, Mr.
- 50:17SPEAKER_06: Bucket full of uh interesting stuff.
- 50:19SPEAKER_06: Um, could you expand what grace actually means?
- 50:22SPEAKER_06: Because it's a very deep word when in this context.
- 50:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, grace, uh one of my favorite definitions of grace is unmerited favor.
- 50:32SPEAKER_02: That you you there's nothing that you do that earns it.
- 50:35SPEAKER_02: And speaking of Dr.
- 50:36SPEAKER_02: Martin Louis Jones and the Apostle Paul, uh, it reminds me of this other quote, which is relying on God's rules is as much self-reliance and God rejection as ignoring God's rules.
- 50:51SPEAKER_02: And so what Paul is saying here is you have to remember, like especially in with the Galatians, they received the grace of God and then they started to depend on their own effort, moving away from the grace of God.
- 51:05SPEAKER_02: And I think one of the most important aspects of the gospel is the reality that grace or the gospel is not only the thing that saves us, but it is also the thing that keeps us.
- 51:17SPEAKER_02: We were talking about that recently, like you see Paul's journey and you see him almost, almost elude.
- 51:22SPEAKER_02: If you misread him, you might think that what he's ultimately saying is that he's increasing, like his sin has somehow increased.
- 51:30SPEAKER_02: Like he's sinning more now that he's a Christian.
- 51:32SPEAKER_02: That's not what he's saying.
- 51:33SPEAKER_02: What he's saying is the more he understoods the gospel, the more he walks with the Lord, the more he understands his dependence on the Lord.
- 51:44SPEAKER_02: And I think when we really reflect on two things, when we reflect on the character of God, especially his holiness, and we reflect on our sinfulness.
- 51:53SPEAKER_02: I mean, I was just I was just reading uh two nights ago when the angels are singing, holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty who was and is and is to come.
- 52:03SPEAKER_02: Like the reality that these ancient beings spend their entire lives hovering over the creator of the universe, and they have chosen to spend their eternal lives singing, holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty who was and is and is to come.
- 52:29SPEAKER_02: If we could simply see with our eyes what they see, would we not understand how dependent we are on the grace of God to be able to approach his throne in prayer?
- 52:44SPEAKER_02: To be able to boldly approach his throne in prayer.
- 52:47SPEAKER_02: We are so dependent on the gospel, on the grace, the unmerited favor that a holy God has shown us.
- 52:54SPEAKER_05: You know, Oscar, I thought about that in terms of appropriateness, right?
- 52:57SPEAKER_05: Like, and I'm imagining someone doing something extraordinary for you.
- 53:02SPEAKER_05: We we've seen that on television, different shows.
- 53:05SPEAKER_05: I remember the Extreme Makeover Home Edition, right?
- 53:08SPEAKER_05: They'd go and they would just redo someone's house or build a brand new house for someone, you know, or we hear stories of someone's debt being paid off or whatever.
- 53:18SPEAKER_05: And all that person can do, along with gush floods of tears, is continue to say thank you, thank you.
- 53:26SPEAKER_05: I don't know how to thank you, thank you.
- 53:27SPEAKER_05: And they keep going and going and going.
- 53:28SPEAKER_05: And it's like almost like the seraphim that are flying and covering their eyes and feet, crying holy.
- 53:33SPEAKER_05: It's like they can't help it because they're so consumed with the holiness of God.
- 53:39SPEAKER_05: It's not something that's compulsory, it's not something that they're doing because they have to do it.
- 53:44SPEAKER_05: They can't help but do it because they're so consumed with the fullness of the glory of God.
- 53:49SPEAKER_06: Amen.
- 53:49SPEAKER_05: And for us as believers on this side of eternity, that happens through that intentional gaze upon the Lord, that meditation upon his glory and his greatness.
- 54:00SPEAKER_05: They saw it in its full form, untainted.
- 54:04SPEAKER_05: We here look dimly, right, through a glass.
- 54:06SPEAKER_05: But if we would just sit and meditate and focus, we'll be consumed with it.
- 54:10SPEAKER_05: And we can't help but praise him constantly.
- 54:12SPEAKER_00: I can't remember who said it, but self is the great idol every natural man worships.
- 54:18SPEAKER_05: He's using his phone so you can't see it and it's doing no good.
- 54:21SPEAKER_06: It's like, haven't you heard of the eighth commandment?
- 54:24SPEAKER_06: Sorry, stop it.
- 54:25SPEAKER_06: Let me give you a different one.
- 54:26SPEAKER_06: Okay, that's the next one, Thomas Brooks.
- 54:29SPEAKER_06: Stop it.
- 54:30SPEAKER_00: Weakness the more you will praise Christ's strength.
- 54:32SPEAKER_06: I'm just saying, I have quotes to these aren't now I've got nothing to say.
- 54:36SPEAKER_05: We'll figure something out for you and tell you to say it, right?
- 54:39SPEAKER_05: Okay, thank you.
- 54:40SPEAKER_05: Um 2 Corinthians 3, 5.
- 54:43SPEAKER_05: Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God.
- 54:54SPEAKER_05: Our sufficiency is from God.
- 54:57SPEAKER_05: And and you you think about how it is we receive that sufficiency for every occasion, right?
- 55:04SPEAKER_05: In that he himself has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you.
- 55:08SPEAKER_05: And lo, I will be with you always, even unto the end of the age.
- 55:11SPEAKER_05: It's sufficiency supplied through unending and unconditional presence.
- 55:18SPEAKER_05: Right?
- 55:19SPEAKER_05: I mean, again, he's our source.
- 55:21SPEAKER_05: We freak out when we have our laptop and we're somewhere and realize we don't have our charger.
- 55:27SPEAKER_05: Right?
- 55:27SPEAKER_05: We need the source.
- 55:29SPEAKER_05: You know, we freak out when we're somewhere and and the water bottle that we filled in the morning is now low and has maybe an inch left, and we're an hour away from modern civilization.
- 55:41SPEAKER_05: Like, oh no.
- 55:42SPEAKER_05: We need the source.
- 55:43SPEAKER_05: His presence is the source for our sufficiency.
- 55:47SPEAKER_05: That's right.
- 55:47SPEAKER_06: Amen.
- 55:48SPEAKER_05: And and how comforting that is, right?
- 55:50SPEAKER_05: We can turn to him at any time, cry out to him, depend on him, rely on him.
- 55:54SPEAKER_05: And and we have to we have to remember that as believers.
- 55:57SPEAKER_06: Ray Comfort thought of something to say.
- 55:59SPEAKER_06: Yes, Charles Spurgeon said, every particle of self-reliance is but a new particle of poison infused into our veins.
- 56:08unknown: Oh.
- 56:09SPEAKER_00: I don't know what that means, but the way you said it was very powerful.
- 56:14SPEAKER_05: Ray, who was it that that taught you that?
- 56:17SPEAKER_05: Oh, Mr.
- 56:17SPEAKER_05: Hull, Bullfrog.
- 56:19SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 56:19SPEAKER_06: Um, I I mentioned it before, but I'll say it again because it's so meaningful.
- 56:24SPEAKER_06: And even when I think of it now, it brings tears to my eyes because we used to mock our principal and call him Bullfrog because he looked exactly like one of those Charles Dickens characters that are just and he came into our class, there was about 60 of us in a class.
- 56:38SPEAKER_06: Uh I was about nine at the time, and he he he he just said, I want to read something too.
- 56:43SPEAKER_06: And he read it um just like you'd read a normal portion of a story.
- 56:48SPEAKER_06: And then he said, Now listen to this.
- 56:50SPEAKER_06: And he grabbed like thundered, instead of saying thundered, he would say thundered.
- 56:55SPEAKER_06: And uh I just as a little kid, I was just blown away.
- 56:59SPEAKER_06: My hair just blew back, and my eyes went like easy sorcerized, and I've never forgotten it.
- 57:04SPEAKER_06: And I wish I could go back in time and give Bullfrog a big hug and apologize for mocking his physical appearance because that was so meaningful to me.
- 57:14SPEAKER_06: While you still called him Bullfrog right now.
- 57:16SPEAKER_06: Yeah, his name was Jeremiah.
- 57:18SPEAKER_03: Jeremiah was a bullfrog.
- 57:21SPEAKER_03: He was a very good friend of mine.
- 57:23SPEAKER_03: Never understood a word he said, but we got a long mighty fine.
- 57:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 57:30SPEAKER_05: Um Oscar, I I'd love to bring this, bring this back uh to the gospel.
- 57:38SPEAKER_05: Um why is self-reliance ultimately incompatible with the gospel?
- 57:45SPEAKER_02: I think the answer is in Genesis.
- 57:47SPEAKER_02: Oh man.
- 57:48SPEAKER_02: Ken would love that.
- 57:49SPEAKER_02: I actually did not mean for that to be a Ken reference.
- 57:52SPEAKER_02: I do think the answer is in Genesis.
- 57:54SPEAKER_02: If you think about I mean, man, the serpent just has no new tricks.
- 57:59SPEAKER_02: What does he say to Eve?
- 58:01SPEAKER_02: He says to her, You will be like God.
- 58:07SPEAKER_02: He causes her to question her identity, but he also causes her to think unto herself, to be self-reliant.
- 58:15SPEAKER_02: And the reality is that God has made us to be in union, in communion with him.
- 58:24SPEAKER_02: And the beginning of the debacle that is this planet, everything that we all of the sin and suffering, all of it that has happened begins with Adam and Eve seeking their own independence from God.
- 58:40SPEAKER_02: Being able to say, We we we can we got it from here.
- 58:43SPEAKER_02: And nothing has changed.
- 58:45SPEAKER_02: Every single one of us, in our heart of hearts, we want to be our own gods.
- 58:51SPEAKER_02: And so the gospel is paramount because what it does is it destroys that, it brings us to the other utter end of ourselves so that we can be in union and communion with God.
- 59:04SPEAKER_02: That that is ultimately the gospel is about reconciling us back to our Maker where we belong.
- 59:11SPEAKER_02: Amen.
- 59:12SPEAKER_05: That's right.
- 59:14SPEAKER_05: It's reconciliation that is meant to be perpetual.
- 59:19SPEAKER_05: You know, it's not just that we get reconciled to God and now we wander off and do our own thing.
- 59:25SPEAKER_05: It's it's meant to be constant, permanent, and lead into eternity.
- 59:32SPEAKER_05: And and Ray, were you gonna say something?
- 59:34SPEAKER_06: Yes, I was.
- 59:35SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah.
- 59:35SPEAKER_06: I thank God for Leonardo da Vinci.
- 59:38SPEAKER_06: He invented the parachute, and the parachute, I've got 2,000 anecdotes, and 99% of them are to do with parachutes.
- 59:45SPEAKER_06: I just love talking about parachutes.
- 59:48SPEAKER_06: And we're talking about self-reliance.
- 59:50SPEAKER_06: Self-reliance is putting a parachute on, jumping, and then trying to save yourself.
- 59:54SPEAKER_06: Wow.
- 59:54SPEAKER_06: That's what self-reliance.
- 59:55SPEAKER_06: Why would you flap your arms?
- 59:56SPEAKER_06: Just trust the parachute.
- 59:57SPEAKER_06: And the Bible says, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, trust him with all your heart.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_06: Forget the trying to save yourself, it's not gonna work.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, amen.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_05: And and ultimately it comes down to John 15, 5.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_05: I am the vine, you are the branches.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_05: He who abides in me and I in him bears much fruit.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_05: And you cited it earlier, for without me you can do nothing.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_06: So there is the definition of nothing, Richard Dawkins.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Richard Dawkins.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, apart from him, we can do nothing.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_05: And really, that has two kind of dimensions to it.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_05: We can't do anything apart from him, because apart from him, we have nothing and we don't exist.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_05: And then on the other side of it, apart from genuinely abiding in him and doing all things unto his glory, which is a part of dependence, right?
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_05: It's not me, it comes from you.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_05: If we're not doing that, then we can do nothing of real value.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_05: Even though God and his sovereignty will still bring value out of it, when we go to give account to him, uh when when our works are tested by fire, they're gonna be burned up.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_06: I love in Revelation where it says their works shall follow them.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_06: We can we can do things that are gonna last for eternity if we rely on the Lord.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_06: Amen.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_04: Amen.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_04: Well, there you have it.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_04: Remember, a large addition.

- 1:01:33SPEAKER_05: Uh we depend on nothing.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_05: Oh, that's right.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_05: On the Lord.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_05: Do we miss 30,000?
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_06: Did we mention that that we've hit 30,000?
