- 0:01Speaker 1: Faison Brandon's first road pass as a college quarterback was
- 0:04Speaker 1: a touchdown. His second one might have been a mistake
- 0:08Speaker 1: that was waiting to happen. Tennessee opened this game exactly
- 0:13Speaker 1: the way a two-touchdown favorite is supposed to. Fast, clean,
- 0:16Speaker 1: and confident. But then Georgia Tech clawed all the way
- 0:19Speaker 1: back to lead by the end of the first quarter.
- 0:21Speaker 1: And then Tennessee remembered why they were two-touchdown favorites in
- 0:26Speaker 1: the first place. Final score of our game is 45-24 tonight.
- 0:31Speaker 1: But the way you got there tells you a whole
- 0:33Speaker 1: lot more than the final score does. So let's talk
- 0:36Speaker 1: about it. We are SEC Football Addiction. We hope you're
- 0:40Speaker 1: subscribed at this point. We are presented by PrizePix. We're

- 0:51Speaker 1: road test of the season for Josh Heupel. The first
- 0:54Speaker 1: road test of Faison Brandon's entire career. And I know
- 0:58Speaker 1: what happened last week with Georgia Tech, but it is
- 1:01Speaker 1: not some cupcake road trip. It is Bobby Dodd Stadium.
- 1:05Speaker 1: It's a building that Tennessee hadn't played in two decades.
- 1:13Speaker 1: And it's not some cupcake road trip. It's Bobby Dodd Stadium.
- 1:17Speaker 1: It's a building that Tennessee hadn't played in for close
- 1:19Speaker 1: to 40 years on Georgia Tech's home turf in front
- 1:22Speaker 1: of a crowd that had every reason to be loud.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Both teams were coming off of wildly different week one experiences.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Tennessee dismantled Furman. Brandon looked like a three-year starter instead
- 1:33Speaker 1: of a true freshman. He had five total touchdowns. They
- 1:36Speaker 1: had over 600 yards of offense, a defense that logged
- 1:39Speaker 1: a ton of sacks. Georgia Tech, meanwhile, was still sitting
- 1:44Speaker 1: with the sting of the cruelest kind of loss. They
- 1:47Speaker 1: were up late against Colorado. They were 37 seconds away
- 1:50Speaker 1: from a signature win. A blocked field goal at the
- 1:53Speaker 1: buzzer ended up doing them in. and sending them to 0-1.
- 1:57Speaker 1: The guy who blocked that kick, by the way, used
- 1:59Speaker 1: to wear orange and white, Boo Carter, a former defensive
- 2:02Speaker 1: tackle from Tennessee that transferred to Colorado in the offseason,
- 2:05Speaker 1: ended Georgia Tech's night on the final play. There was
- 2:09Speaker 1: a coordinator storyline underneath all of this, too. Jim Knowles
- 2:12Speaker 1: is calling plays for Tennessee's defense in just his second
- 2:16Speaker 1: game in Rocky Top, and George Godsey is doing the
- 2:20Speaker 1: same for Georgia Tech's offense. Two new play callers. They're
- 2:23Speaker 1: both still figuring out their rosters just two games into
- 2:26Speaker 1: the year, which made the wild swings in this one
- 2:28Speaker 1: maybe a little less surprising in hindsight. And Georgia Tech's
- 2:32Speaker 1: quarterback situation carries a college football name that many fans
- 2:36Speaker 1: will be familiar with. Alberto Mendoza, the younger brother of Fernando,
- 2:39Speaker 1: last year's Heisman, last year's number one NFL draft pick,
- 2:42Speaker 1: and last year's national championship winning quarterback. Big shoes to
- 2:47Speaker 1: fill and only his second career start. So I thought
- 2:50Speaker 1: Georgia Tech came into this one with something to prove
- 2:52Speaker 1: in front of their own fans against a program that
- 2:55Speaker 1: used to own this rivalry before a 40-year gap wiped
- 2:59Speaker 1: it out. History was on Tennessee's side on that too,
- 3:03Speaker 1: for what it's worth. The last time these two played
- 3:06Speaker 1: back in 2017, Tennessee stopped a two-point conversion in double
- 3:09Speaker 1: overtime to escape Atlanta 42-41. That was a game that
- 3:14Speaker 1: Georgia Tech's offense dominated statistically and still somehow lost. Tennessee
- 3:18Speaker 1: fans remember exactly how fast this series can turn ugly.
- 3:24Speaker 1: And for exactly a quarter tonight, it looked like this
- 3:26Speaker 1: game might turn ugly. First takeaway in this is the
- 3:30Speaker 1: fast start wasn't enough, almost. Georgia Tech opens the game
- 3:35Speaker 1: with the ball and Tennessee's defense makes them pay for
- 3:37Speaker 1: it immediately. Things got nearly pretty sloppy fast. Georgia Tech's
- 3:42Speaker 1: punts gets away from Moss, who muffs it before diving
- 3:46Speaker 1: on his own mistake to keep Tennessee's night from getting
- 3:49Speaker 1: complicated in the first two minutes. First play from scrimmage
- 3:52Speaker 1: for the Vols, a Deshaun Bishop run for 33 yards.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Two plays later, Brandon drops back for the first pass
- 3:59Speaker 1: of his college career on the road. He finds a
- 4:01Speaker 1: wide-open receiver down the seam, 25-yard touchdown. All of a sudden, boom,
- 4:07Speaker 1: it's 7-0 Tennessee. The gates are still lined with people
- 4:11Speaker 1: outside of it. People haven't even gotten all the way
- 4:13Speaker 1: to their seats. before that 25-yard touchdown pass. In the
- 4:20Speaker 1: second week in a row, Brandon opened the game by
- 4:23Speaker 1: finding a touchdown look pretty easy. It was about as
- 4:27Speaker 1: clean of a start as you could script, but then
- 4:30Speaker 1: it got a little messy. Somewhere in the back half
- 4:34Speaker 1: of that first quarter, Tennessee's punt team gets one blocked,
- 4:36Speaker 1: and Georgia Tech scoops it up for a touchdown of
- 4:38Speaker 1: their own. Add in a field goal to that that
- 4:43Speaker 1: they had scored earlier, And Georgia Tech is leading 10-7.
- 4:48Speaker 1: A building that every reason existed already to be loud
- 4:51Speaker 1: got a lot louder. And a true freshman quarterback making
- 4:55Speaker 1: his first road start is suddenly staring at a deficit
- 4:58Speaker 1: that he didn't create. That is the exact kind of
- 5:01Speaker 1: moment that can spiral. A special team's mistake erases a
- 5:05Speaker 1: clean opening drive. The crowd smells blood and a freshman
- 5:09Speaker 1: starts pressing. It is. Worth remembering that in this game,
- 5:13Speaker 1: Tennessee got senior linebacker Aaron Carter back for this game.
- 5:17Speaker 1: He missed the Furman opener, serving that BS NCAA suspension.
- 5:21Speaker 1: He's a captain. He's a veteran presence. He returned to
- 5:24Speaker 1: a defense that was about to need every bit of
- 5:26Speaker 1: composure that it could find inside of a hostile building. However,
- 5:30Speaker 1: none of that messiness really got away from the Vols.
- 5:34Speaker 1: And that is my second takeaway that I'll talk about
- 5:36Speaker 1: in just a moment after I remind you guys of
- 5:38Speaker 1: two things. One, make sure you are subscribed. We're catching
- 5:42Speaker 1: that ACC channel here on the SEC Football Addiction. Second,
- 5:45Speaker 1: to reward you guys for being subscribed, make sure you're
- 5:48Speaker 1: using CFA 15 when you check out an alumni hall.
- 5:51Speaker 1: That works in person or online at alumnihall.com. Doesn't sign
- 5:55Speaker 1: you up for anything. Saves you 15%. Go check them out.
- 6:00Speaker 1: The real story of tonight's game is 24 points unanswered.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Here's how Tennessee answered getting punched in the mouth by
- 6:08Speaker 1: their own special teams unit. 24 points. A pick six.
- 6:15Speaker 1: The 15th defensive touchdown, if my count is correct, of
- 6:18Speaker 1: the Josh Heupel era at Tennessee. The 12th off of
- 6:21Speaker 1: an interception. Faison wasn't done either. A 20-yard pass to
- 6:26Speaker 1: Braylon Staley. 24-10. 17 points unanswered there at that point.
- 6:33Speaker 1: And you'd held Georgia Tech's offense, the one that actually
- 6:37Speaker 1: showed something to start this game. And he held Georgia
- 6:43Speaker 1: Tech's offense down pretty well. Their crowd was pretty silent
- 6:48Speaker 1: by this point. Tennessee got the ball back to start
- 6:51Speaker 1: the third quarter, and guess who? Deshaun Bishop marches the
- 6:55Speaker 1: offense back down the field, finishes it off with a
- 6:58Speaker 1: 17-yard touchdown, and all of a sudden, it's 31-10. That's
- 7:04Speaker 1: 24 unanswered points across a quarter and a half of football.
- 7:09Speaker 1: And at that moment, Georgia Tech's crowd that was rocking
- 7:12Speaker 1: after the first quarter had nothing left to cheer about.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Add everything together, Tennessee's total on third down was eight
- 7:22Speaker 1: for 14. They were one for one on fourth down.
- 7:26Speaker 1: That was the kind of situational football that turns a
- 7:29Speaker 1: shaky first quarter into a laugher by the final stanza.
- 7:33Speaker 1: And here's why that stretch to me matters a lot
- 7:36Speaker 1: more than the final score does. Anyone with a two-touchdown
- 7:39Speaker 1: talent gap can win a game. What you actually want
- 7:42Speaker 1: to know about a team in September is how they
- 7:45Speaker 1: respond when something goes wrong, something that's completely out of
- 7:48Speaker 1: their control. Tennessee's punt team handed Georgia Tech a touchdown
- 7:52Speaker 1: and a lot of the momentum in this game. The
- 7:55Speaker 1: reason that it didn't turn into anything worse is that
- 7:59Speaker 1: their response was not to panic. It was a defensive score.
- 8:05Speaker 1: It was an offensive score. And then it was a
- 8:07Speaker 1: third quarter gut punch to close the door. That's poise
- 8:11Speaker 1: that you don't often get from a true freshman quarterback
- 8:15Speaker 1: in his first road start. And that matters because takeaway
- 8:19Speaker 1: three is about what the box score tells us going forward.
- 8:23Speaker 1: The numbers tell us that this was a team win.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Look at the stat sheet. Because it tells a much
- 8:30Speaker 1: more complete story than road freshman quarterback wins a big game.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Brandon was 10 of 21 for 148 yards, two touchdowns,
- 8:43Speaker 1: and no interceptions. That was a good day for him,
- 8:46Speaker 1: but it wasn't a great one by any means. He
- 8:50Speaker 1: had 22 yards on the ground. He was efficient when
- 8:55Speaker 1: he needed to be, but he put up good numbers,
- 8:58Speaker 1: not gaudy numbers. This wasn't the same explosive, nearly flawless
- 9:03Speaker 1: version of Brandon that we saw torch Furman. Georgia Tech
- 9:07Speaker 1: is a different opponent. They made him work for it.
- 9:11Speaker 1: He had up and down stretches. He had a lower
- 9:13Speaker 1: completion rate. He had a game that looked far more
- 9:16Speaker 1: like a genuine power for fight than a rerun of
- 9:20Speaker 1: that Furman blowout. What bailed out inconsistent passing at times
- 9:26Speaker 1: was Deshaun Bishop. He brought it tonight, 147 yards, seven
- 9:33Speaker 1: and a half yards per rush. He capped off his
- 9:36Speaker 1: big night with a huge rushing touchdown with 425 left
- 9:40Speaker 1: in the game. You added one more for good measure
- 9:43Speaker 1: with just over a minute to go. Tennessee finished the
- 9:47Speaker 1: game with just a tick under 300 yards, rushing 299 yards.
- 9:53Speaker 1: The passing game was not humming at the level that
- 9:55Speaker 1: you might have expected after week one, but the run
- 9:58Speaker 1: game carried the load. And that's the kind of complimentary
- 10:02Speaker 1: football that wins in November, not just in September. On
- 10:07Speaker 1: the other side of the ball, I'm more than happy
- 10:08Speaker 1: to give Alberto Mendoza some credit. 26 of 40, 221 yards.
- 10:13Speaker 1: I think that was a respectable total for him. He
- 10:16Speaker 1: was playing in his second career start. He was playing
- 10:21Speaker 1: against a ranked opponent's pass rush, and we all know
- 10:23Speaker 1: how good that can be. His two interceptions, including that
- 10:27Speaker 1: pick six, are kind of what flipped this game. They're
- 10:30Speaker 1: the kind of mistakes that make a competitive first quarter
- 10:33Speaker 1: a rout. Georgia Tech actually finished with 350-plus yards of
- 10:38Speaker 1: total offense. It's not a terrible number. A lot of
- 10:41Speaker 1: that came late when they scored a couple of touchdowns
- 10:44Speaker 1: when they were already out of it. But I thought
- 10:48Speaker 1: they did a pretty good job offensively, just trying to
- 10:50Speaker 1: keep themselves in a game. And outside of those turnovers,
- 10:53Speaker 1: it might have been that. So what do you actually
- 10:57Speaker 1: take from a 45-24 win on the road against an
- 11:00Speaker 1: 0-2 team? I don't think this is a signature win.
- 11:04Speaker 1: This is not a playoff resume builder. What you take
- 11:08Speaker 1: is this. Tennessee can survive some ugly moments. They can
- 11:12Speaker 1: survive an absolutely catastrophic mistake on special teams. They can
- 11:17Speaker 1: absorb a deficit in a hostile building. They can still
- 11:22Speaker 1: move the ball when their quarterback's not the sharpest because,
- 11:25Speaker 1: let's be frank, at times he's not going to be
- 11:27Speaker 1: as a true freshman. And they can still find a
- 11:30Speaker 1: way in a hostile building to do all of those
- 11:32Speaker 1: things and win a football game. A defensive touchdown, passing touchdowns,
- 11:37Speaker 1: rushing touchdowns, a dominant second half on the ground. It
- 11:42Speaker 1: was a different problem than last week presented, but it
- 11:44Speaker 1: was a different answer too. Every single time Georgia Tech
- 11:48Speaker 1: threatened to make it interesting, Tennessee had an answer. And
- 11:52Speaker 1: that is a program that has more than one way
- 11:54Speaker 1: to beat you. And with SEC play right around the corner,
- 11:58Speaker 1: that's the kind of versatility that this team is going
- 12:00Speaker 1: to need. There's a bigger picture worth sitting with. Georgia
- 12:05Speaker 1: Tech is now 0-2 to start the season. And both
- 12:09Speaker 1: losses have the same fingerprints all over them. They're a
- 12:13Speaker 1: competitive team. That's good enough to hang with quality opponents,
- 12:17Speaker 1: but they keep losing in the margins. Tennessee is able
- 12:22Speaker 1: to win in those same margins. For the Vols, the
- 12:27Speaker 1: lesson is the opposite. This was not a masterpiece by
- 12:31Speaker 1: any means. The passing game wasn't the same explosive unit
- 12:35Speaker 1: that we saw last week against inferior competition. Georgia Tech's
- 12:38Speaker 1: defense made this a full fight for a quarter and
- 12:42Speaker 1: a half. But a team that can absorb those kind
- 12:45Speaker 1: of mistakes, they fall behind in a raucous environment and
- 12:51Speaker 1: still find three completely different ways to pull away. One
- 12:55Speaker 1: through the air, one on the ground, and one in
- 12:57Speaker 1: the turnover column. That's a team that's built to survive
- 13:01Speaker 1: ugly weeks that are coming in SEC play. For being honest,
- 13:05Speaker 1: Georgia Tech had this game right where they wanted it
- 13:08Speaker 1: after a quarter of play. They had a road favorite
- 13:11Speaker 1: freshman QB down on the scoreboard. They had a sold-out
- 13:14Speaker 1: crowd finally getting loud in a building that hadn't seen
- 13:16Speaker 1: Tennessee in four decades. Every ingredient for the kind of
- 13:20Speaker 1: upset that gets talked about for years in Atlanta. And
- 13:23Speaker 1: then Tennessee spent the next 45 minutes making sure that
- 13:26Speaker 1: nobody remembers that part. A pick six, a touchdown pass,
- 13:30Speaker 1: multiple rushing touchdowns. It took a lot of the air
- 13:34Speaker 1: out of the building. And when the passing game cooled off,
- 13:37Speaker 1: Deshaun Bishop just put the game on his back and
- 13:39Speaker 1: ran through it. It was a career night. It turned
- 13:43Speaker 1: a competitive road game into a very comfortable one. 45-24
- 13:48Speaker 1: doesn't tell you Georgia Tech led at one point. It
- 13:50Speaker 1: doesn't tell you that a freshman quarterback had his roughest
- 13:53Speaker 1: completion percentage of the young season. It just tells you
- 13:57Speaker 1: who was still standing at the end. Tennessee is 2-0.
- 14:00Speaker 1: And the margins that separated those two records between 2-0
- 14:04Speaker 1: and 0-2 for Georgia Tech are the kind of margins
- 14:08Speaker 1: that the Vols team is going to need to keep
- 14:10Speaker 1: controlling once SEC play shows up. Thought this was a
- 14:14Speaker 1: really good win for Tennessee tonight. I thought it was
- 14:16Speaker 1: a lot that they can build on. Kennesaw State next
- 14:19Speaker 1: week gives you another opportunity to build, and then you
- 14:21Speaker 1: all know what's coming two weeks after that. You guys
- 14:25Speaker 1: saw what Texas did tonight. That is a team that
- 14:28Speaker 1: can be beaten, but it's going to take a really
- 14:31Speaker 1: good effort from the Vols. My plan is to be
- 14:34Speaker 1: in Knoxville for that game. So continue to shoot me
- 14:37Speaker 1: your comments on suggestions and things I need to see
- 14:40Speaker 1: while I'm in Knoxville. I appreciate you guys for tuning in.
