- 0:00Speaker 1: The greatest freshman quarterback in the entire country resides in Knoxville, Tennessee,
- 0:05Speaker 1: and the Vols went on the road. And despite a
- 0:08Speaker 1: not great first quarter went to town against Georgia tech,
- 0:12Speaker 1: they certainly have things to clean up, but a road
- 0:14Speaker 1: game in Atlanta with a juiced up crowd and a
- 0:18Speaker 1: team that had nothing to lose and everything to prove
- 0:20Speaker 1: based on their week one performance gave them about a quarter.
- 0:25Speaker 1: And that was about it. Tennessee gets a big win
- 0:27Speaker 1: in Atlanta. They come home. I think it's Kennesaw state.
- 0:30Speaker 1: And then everything kind of points towards that Texas game
- 0:33Speaker 1: in two weeks. This is presented by prize picks, but
- 0:36Speaker 1: Cole thoughts on the volunteers.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Outside of the penalties.
- 0:40Speaker 3: There were a lot 14 for 142. So you gotta,
- 0:43Speaker 3: you gotta clean that up. Um, I don't think it's
- 0:45Speaker 3: far fetched to say that phase on Brandon is the
- 0:47Speaker 3: best freshman quarterback in college football. He looks so smooth
- 0:50Speaker 3: running the offense for Josh Heupel and, 24 first downs
- 0:54Speaker 3: in this game, 447 yards of offense, and I know
- 0:56Speaker 3: that there will be some Tennessee fans who said, it
- 0:58Speaker 3: was sloppy, it was disgusting, it definitely felt like a dogfight.
- 1:03Speaker 3: I never, ever was in fear of Jeopardy, of.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Georgia Tech finding a way to fight back in this game.
- 1:12Speaker 3: The physicality, I think, of Tennessee has really shown itself
- 1:16Speaker 3: in the first two games on both sides of the football. Defensively,
- 1:20Speaker 3: The fact that you were able to get two massive
- 1:21Speaker 3: turnovers on Alberto Mendoza, including that big pick six by
- 1:25Speaker 3: Dijon Lane to run it back. I think it shows
- 1:29Speaker 3: you that there is an identity in place that Jim
- 1:32Speaker 3: Knowles has implemented at the early stages. We're already moving
- 1:35Speaker 3: towards stage three of a five-step plan to figure out
- 1:37Speaker 3: a Jim Knowles' defense, which is good because of the
- 1:40Speaker 3: big question that I think all of us had going
- 1:42Speaker 3: into the year was how quickly can this defense be
- 1:45Speaker 3: able to pick up the P's and Q's of an offense,
- 1:48Speaker 3: I mean, of a unit by Jim Knowles that will
- 1:51Speaker 3: be able to counteract what the offense does. And I
- 1:54Speaker 3: think that we're seeing it a lot closer and a
- 1:56Speaker 3: lot more consistent to be able to make the plays
- 2:00Speaker 3: to where they will keep them in games.
- 2:02Speaker 2: The thing that I love about Tassie, just.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Before we go on, I will give some love to
- 2:06Speaker 1: our friends over at prize picks. Hopefully you're enjoying this
- 2:08Speaker 1: clip from the power to here on college football addiction.
- 2:11Speaker 1: We are only showing one game so far for Friday
- 2:15Speaker 1: night football, but it is Miami.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Against wake forest. And we got some picks for you.
- 2:20Speaker 4: I tease all of these.
- 2:21Speaker 1: So I lowered the minutes of passing yards to 24.5.
- 2:25Speaker 1: He's hitting the more on that. I got geo Lopez
- 2:27Speaker 1: throwing one touchdown. So wake does score a touchdown through
- 2:30Speaker 1: the air against Miami.
- 2:32Speaker 4: I got Malachi.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Tony's receiving yards at 69 and a half. He's blowing
- 2:35Speaker 1: that total out of the water. Give me the more
- 2:37Speaker 1: on that. I got Mark Fletcher, 49 and a half
- 2:40Speaker 1: rushing yards. Miami's offense is going to feast. Give me
- 2:43Speaker 1: the more on that one as well. Give me all
- 2:45Speaker 1: three Miami ones. Give me the geo Lopez. Don't get
- 2:47Speaker 1: mad at me, Canes fans. For the more on touchdowns,
- 2:50Speaker 1: I'll do more picks throughout the week. One showing so far,
- 2:53Speaker 1: but lock it in early before these lines change. I'm
- 2:56Speaker 1: telling you, Miami's offense ain't going to be held down.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Go get the picks before it's too late. Use code HMA.
- 3:00Speaker 4: All new users who do.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Get $ 150 in lineups instantly if they win their first
- 3:05Speaker 1: $ 5 lineup again on the prize picks app.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Now back to the clip.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Is that they know what their identity is offensively and
- 3:11Speaker 3: they don't steer away from it. They want to run
- 3:13Speaker 3: the football, and they can run the football really well.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Deshaun Bishop had 147 yards. He's averaging like 7.5 yards
- 3:19Speaker 3: a play. He found his way into the end zone.
- 3:21Speaker 3: He found his way at twice. He was really, really
- 3:24Speaker 3: good in space. This is a team that I think
- 3:27Speaker 3: you have turned the corner. The way that TJ was
- 3:29Speaker 3: talking about Texas, where I think because of that win
- 3:32Speaker 3: over Ohio State, I can give them now an 11-1 chance.
- 3:35Speaker 3: I give them one more victory than what they had.
- 3:38Speaker 3: I think the way that they have looked so far,
- 3:40Speaker 3: credit against a team that Brent Key even said, we're
- 3:43Speaker 3: getting our asses whooped and we're.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Being out physical.
- 3:46Speaker 3: A team that should never feel that way with Brent
- 3:48Speaker 3: Key as the head coach.
- 3:49Speaker 2: And Furman.
- 3:50Speaker 3: So there's two teams that right now we don't really
- 3:51Speaker 3: have a good understanding. I'm able to say I would
- 3:54Speaker 3: throw one more win onto Tennessee's record. I don't think
- 3:57Speaker 3: that they will be a playoff team. I think it'll
- 3:59Speaker 3: be 9-3. I think they'll get somebody. I think they'll
- 4:02Speaker 3: have a massive upset that will alter the pathway of
- 4:05Speaker 3: college football and who's going to be represented in the SEC.
- 4:08Speaker 3: But I do think that the way that we have
- 4:11Speaker 3: seen this offense look and the way this defense has
- 4:13Speaker 3: come together in eight quarters.
- 4:15Speaker 2: you feel a lot.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Better about Tennessee's opportunity to hold their own against teams
- 4:19Speaker 3: like Alabama, against teams like Texas, maybe even against teams
- 4:22Speaker 3: like LSU. They should feel like that they are going
- 4:25Speaker 3: to be in control of those matchups and they just
- 4:27Speaker 3: get more consistent play from a young quarterback that only
- 4:30Speaker 3: continues to blossom into a really solid player. They may
- 4:34Speaker 3: end up pulling off the upset in those games, but
- 4:35Speaker 3: I feel really good about the direction of where Tennessee
- 4:37Speaker 3: is going into 2026 and moving forward.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:42Speaker 4: I mean, I think they've got the pieces.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I think they've, You know, again, I don't think they're
- 4:47Speaker 1: a playoff team. I'm not ready to say that yet,
- 4:49Speaker 1: but I'll tell you this.
- 4:50Speaker 4: They go beat Texas. They are like in the conversation.
- 4:53Speaker 4: We start to not that they are. Yeah, you're right
- 4:55Speaker 4: in the conversation.
- 4:56Speaker 1: I'm not ready to talk about them as a playoff
- 4:58Speaker 1: team yet, but you can show me in two weeks
- 5:00Speaker 1: that you are. And we'll certainly talk about that game
- 5:02Speaker 1: a ton leading up to it. I thought they did
- 5:05Speaker 1: a good job responding here. Like things were not.
- 5:08Speaker 4: I mean, they scored on the, what was the first
- 5:10Speaker 4: play of the game or the first drive of the,
- 5:11Speaker 4: no huge run. And then phase on, yeah. So they
- 5:14Speaker 4: scored quick three plays.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:16Speaker 4: You're like, oh, okay, well, this won't be fun.
- 5:19Speaker 1: And it did get a little bit more interesting. I,
- 5:22Speaker 1: you know, Georgia tech scores and then Georgia tech gets
- 5:25Speaker 1: the block punt. And all of a sudden Tennessee's losing
- 5:30Speaker 1: at the, um, into the first quarter. And again, I
- 5:33Speaker 1: was like, Cole, I never really thought like I had
- 5:35Speaker 1: a friend text me and say, Oh, you're Tennessee, your
- 5:38Speaker 1: boys over in Tennessee. They know, they think I like
- 5:40Speaker 1: Tennessee because all the Tennessee fans, they're so nice. Like
- 5:42Speaker 1: Eric and everybody in our comments. And I, you know,
- 5:44Speaker 1: I ended up cheering for them just cause I liked the,
- 5:46Speaker 1: you know, I want them to be happy and show
- 5:48Speaker 1: up to the show. But I, uh, I had a
- 5:51Speaker 1: friend text me who lives in Tennessee and is an
- 5:53Speaker 1: FSU fan and said like, oh, your boy's over at Tennessee.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Look at him losing after the first quarter. And I
- 5:57Speaker 4: was like, they'll be fine. They'll win by 20. And
- 6:00Speaker 4: they did, right?
- 6:00Speaker 1: Like it wasn't, you know, incredibly competitive, incredibly close, but
- 6:04Speaker 1: you still are sold out stadium on the.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Road, competent team, good coach on the other sideline.
- 6:11Speaker 1: And things are going Georgia Tech's way in some regards
- 6:15Speaker 1: and a true freshman quarterback on the road, making his
- 6:17Speaker 1: first start against a team that, Has a pulse. Yeah, like,
- 6:21Speaker 1: he's not Furman. Like, they didn't, but things could have spiraled.
- 6:25Speaker 1: If Faison throws two interceptions, his next two drives, like,
- 6:28Speaker 1: because he gets a little rattled... This is a much
- 6:31Speaker 1: different recap. We're talking about now. Maybe Tennessee still pulls
- 6:33Speaker 1: it out. Maybe they, you know, win by three or something.
- 6:37Speaker 1: And we say, Ooh, they survived it. We're not saying
- 6:39Speaker 1: Tennessee survived it. We're saying they responded. They got punched
- 6:42Speaker 1: in the mouth. They had something good play to Georgia tech.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I don't want to call it fully fluky, but a
- 6:47Speaker 1: fluky play. That's not something you see often with a
- 6:49Speaker 1: blocked punt caught for a touchdown.
- 6:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 6:52Speaker 1: I mean, it just didn't necessarily go their way at
- 6:55Speaker 1: the start, but they, I thought they responded very, very well. Yeah.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Very, very well for a team that also, I think,
- 7:00Speaker 3: has a really good identity about themselves.
- 7:03Speaker 2: And they didn't panic.
- 7:04Speaker 3: And I think that's the main thing that I will say,
- 7:06Speaker 3: and Tom, I'll throw this to you. Young quarterback, on
- 7:09Speaker 3: the road, making his first start. It's very easy to
- 7:14Speaker 3: when one thing goes awry, it all just unravels. And
- 7:18Speaker 3: I think that the maturity of what you have from
- 7:20Speaker 3: Tennessee outside of the quarterback, running back, offensive line, wide
- 7:25Speaker 3: receiver room, defensive players who have been in situations before
- 7:28Speaker 3: they kind of made it clear all right we got
- 7:31Speaker 3: the mulligan now time for us to be able to
- 7:33Speaker 3: kind of get back into things and not make our
- 7:35Speaker 3: quarterback have to look the part because he was 10
- 7:36Speaker 3: to 21 he had over 200 i think he had
- 7:38Speaker 3: over 200 passing yards if i'm not mistaken two touchdowns
- 7:41Speaker 3: it wasn't an elite name but at the same time
- 7:43Speaker 3: if i'm asking my freshman quarterback oh true freshman quarterback
- 7:47Speaker 3: let's just throw that out there true freshman quarterback to
- 7:50Speaker 3: make plays in his second start on the road Guys,
- 7:54Speaker 3: I got some bigger problems than just my quarterback being
- 7:56Speaker 3: a freshman.
- 7:56Speaker 2: I got a lot of problems to say that.
- 7:58Speaker 5: We had talked about during the offseason when there was
- 8:00Speaker 5: the quarterback competition between McIntyre and Brandon. It's like, hey,
- 8:04Speaker 5: you want to have somebody figured out before the Georgia
- 8:06Speaker 5: Tech game, not that it was a big, bad opponent,
- 8:08Speaker 5: but it's a road game, and you want to make
- 8:09Speaker 5: sure you're ready for that. Now the rest of this
- 8:11Speaker 5: schedule actually works out pretty favorably for Faison Brandon as
- 8:15Speaker 5: a true freshman, to your point. Home against Kennesaw State,
- 8:18Speaker 5: home against Texas, difficult game, but you get that at Neyland.
- 8:21Speaker 5: It's fantastic. home against Auburn. You don't go on the
- 8:23Speaker 5: road until October 10th, and that's a game against Arkansas.
- 8:27Speaker 5: The rest of your road schedule is at South Carolina,
- 8:30Speaker 5: at Texas A & M, and at Vanderbilt. So the
- 8:33Speaker 5: A & M game will be tough, but I look
- 8:35Speaker 5: at every game on Tennessee's schedule, and I think they're
- 8:39Speaker 5: all winnable. Do I think they're going to go 12-0? No,
- 8:42Speaker 5: but I think there's a possibility for upsets along the way.
- 8:45Speaker 5: They're probably not going to be favored against Texas, Alabama, LSU,
- 8:50Speaker 5: and Texas A & M. You have to see where
- 8:51Speaker 5: we are at that point in the season. I want
- 8:53Speaker 5: to see if their running game is going to work
- 8:56Speaker 5: against Will Muschamp's defense. I want to see if it's
- 8:59Speaker 5: going to work against Baker's defense and LSU. I want
- 9:03Speaker 5: to see how this is going to work against Alabama,
- 9:05Speaker 5: but even still the way Kentucky played against Alabama, I'm like, eh,
- 9:08Speaker 5: that's a bit of a coin flip there. So I
- 9:10Speaker 5: think Tennessee has the ability to win games every game
- 9:15Speaker 5: on its schedule, which I don't know if we felt
- 9:17Speaker 5: that way during the offseason. Is that exactly what's going
- 9:20Speaker 5: to happen? I don't think so. But again, if Texas
- 9:23Speaker 5: doesn't get their act together, they could lose at Neyland
- 9:27Speaker 5: to this Tennessee team.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Tennessee could upset Alabama.
- 9:31Speaker 5: If LSU plays the way they played against Louisiana Tech
- 9:35Speaker 5: and not the way they played against Clemson, again, you
- 9:37Speaker 5: catch a team on the right day, anything can happen.
- 9:39Speaker 5: That's college football. So I think the future is really
- 9:42Speaker 5: bright for Faison Brandon. This season looks bright for Tennessee.
- 9:46Speaker 5: The variance is just high. I think there's an easy
- 9:49Speaker 5: chance that they could lose four of these SEC games
- 9:51Speaker 5: and they're on the outside looking in. Even three of
- 9:54Speaker 5: these games and you're still on the outside looking in.
- 9:56Speaker 5: But there's a chance that they upset some big boys
- 9:58Speaker 5: and everybody and their brother. is saying tennessee should be
- 10:01Speaker 5: in the playoff.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Let me ask you really let me just make a
- 10:05Speaker 1: point then i'll let cole say that they're really fortunate
- 10:07Speaker 1: that their toughest three games are all at home Yeah.
- 10:10Speaker 3: A & M.
- 10:10Speaker 1: I don't want to make A & M like, but like,
- 10:13Speaker 1: I think Bama LSU in Texas will be tougher than
- 10:15Speaker 1: A & M. And so if you, if, if I
- 10:18Speaker 1: was going to tell you, Hey, you either got to
- 10:19Speaker 1: go to DKR, Brian Denny, Baton Rouge, certainly not that
- 10:23Speaker 1: one or Kyle field. I'm not calling, you know, for the,
- 10:26Speaker 1: before the A & M fans jumped on my throat.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Like I would say, yeah, I think A & M
- 10:30Speaker 1: is not as good as those three other teams. So
- 10:32Speaker 1: I'll take those other three teams at home. Like, give
- 10:34Speaker 1: me a, a leg up. Um, Bama's got questions for sure,
- 10:39Speaker 1: but their toughest three games are at home.
- 10:41Speaker 4: They're tough.
- 10:42Speaker 1: They might go 0-3, but that's favorable to get that pitch.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Go ahead, Cole.
- 10:48Speaker 3: All I was going to say is if we get
- 10:50Speaker 3: to December and we're looking at the college football playoff
- 10:52Speaker 3: and there's only three SEC teams in, would you not
- 10:56Speaker 3: be surprised if you look back and say the reason
- 10:58Speaker 3: why is because Tennessee played spoiler.
- 11:00Speaker 2: They knocked two teams off because of that.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Yeah, because they could easily knock, you know, Yes, absolutely.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Especially with where these games come. I think there's a
- 11:11Speaker 1: great chance that that's the case. And when we are
- 11:13Speaker 1: looking at Bama's schedule, we're saying that they should beat Tennessee.
- 11:17Speaker 1: We're saying that LSU should beat Tennessee. We're saying that
- 11:20Speaker 1: Texas should beat Tennessee. I haven't picked Tennessee in any
- 11:24Speaker 1: of those three games, but I've got 10-2 for all
- 11:26Speaker 1: those other teams.
- 11:27Speaker 4: I guess 11-1 now for Texas with the Ohio State win.
- 11:29Speaker 1: So if Tennessee's any of those teams' third loss, I
- 11:34Speaker 1: don't think they're getting in.
- 11:36Speaker 5: We mentioned the AP Top 25 for a second there.
- 11:39Speaker 5: Tennessee's at 15. They should feel disrespected because ahead of them,
- 11:43Speaker 5: you have 14 is Penn State, 13 is Texas Tech,
- 11:46Speaker 5: 12 is USC, 11 is BYU, and then 10 is Alabama.
- 11:50Speaker 5: So I'm not ready to put them over Alabama, but
- 11:53Speaker 5: they should be 11th in the country. If I'm a
- 11:55Speaker 5: Tennessee fan, I'm not happy about that.
- 11:57Speaker 3: See, I have BYU in my top 10, so I
- 11:59Speaker 3: would still have them behind BYU. But that's where you
- 12:01Speaker 3: have the argument, starting with that conversation.
- 12:03Speaker 5: I think Tennessee's got more talent than BYU does. But
- 12:07Speaker 5: the head-to-head would be incredible between those two. But seeing
- 12:10Speaker 5: what Penn State, Texas Tech, and USC have been so
- 12:12Speaker 5: far this year, Tennessee's a better team than all three
- 12:14Speaker 5: of those.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Fun team.
- 12:16Speaker 3: What I will say is that I do not think
- 12:17Speaker 3: Tennessee is going to be in the college football playoff.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Tennessee will be a reason one team from the SEC
- 12:21Speaker 2: is not in the playoff.
- 12:22Speaker 1: It's a great take. I think I've got Tennessee. I
- 12:25Speaker 1: think I had eight and four before the season. I
- 12:27Speaker 1: think I'm more solidly in the nine and three camp.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I've got to take care of business against teams like Auburn, Arkansas,
- 12:31Speaker 1: South Carolina is a tough road trip.
- 12:33Speaker 4: You've got the one with Vandy at the end of
- 12:35Speaker 4: the year. I think you should win that. But yeah,
- 12:37Speaker 4: I think nine and three is very realistic. And if
- 12:39Speaker 4: they beat Texas, I'm moving that up to 10 and
- 12:41Speaker 4: two because I've got, there's a loss. And so I'll,
- 12:43Speaker 4: I'll move it up.
- 12:44Speaker 1: And, and I think if you beat Texas, there ain't
- 12:47Speaker 1: no reason you can't beat LSU or, or Alabama too. Now,
- 12:50Speaker 1: I don't have them going 12 and Oh, obviously I
- 12:53Speaker 1: don't need to have 11 and one, but if you,
- 12:56Speaker 1: even if you just compete with Texas, who I think
- 12:57Speaker 1: showed you like, man, when they put it together, they're,
- 12:59Speaker 1: they're really good. Um, you know, I think Texas is
- 13:02Speaker 1: better than, than Alabama. I think Texas is probably slightly
- 13:04Speaker 1: better than LSU. If you go out there and have
- 13:06Speaker 1: a good showing in two weeks with a crazy home
- 13:09Speaker 1: crowd at noon, or I guess 11 o'clock their time, then,
- 13:13Speaker 1: Oh no, it is Eastern.
- 13:13Speaker 4: Time in Knoxville. Uh, but, uh, yeah, it, uh, it'll
- 13:17Speaker 4: be a lot of fun.
- 13:17Speaker 3: So, uh,
