- 0:20Hi. Good morning.
- 0:22Good morning. How are we doing?
- 0:25Much better today. Good.
- 0:27It was yesterday. Not great.
- 0:29Well the golden I have then who is super sweet but was waking us
- 0:33up with barking the first night and I got a 77 sleep score which
- 0:38is whatever but I'm not used to that.
- 0:41OK, 77 is a not that bad, but also the fact that we've
- 0:45realized our different rings is wild.
- 0:49Well, I was surprised. Mine asked me to stretch my legs
- 0:51yesterday at one point. That's new.
- 0:53Oh my gosh. Yeah, maybe it's because it's
- 0:55like, well, you moved so much when Kate was there, which you
- 0:57normally do, like you're an active person, but like we were
- 1:00go, go going some of the days. Oh yeah, like, well, because.
- 1:05Yeah, what is your ring? Mine's a ring con.
- 1:09OK, so mine's aura. So mine rewards me for being
- 1:13lazy. It tells me, wow, you got so
- 1:15much more restorative time yesterday, which just means
- 1:18laying on the couch watching TV. Meanwhile mine gaslights me to
- 1:21get up and move more even though I'm already pretty Dang active
- 1:24and also tells me like I'm sleeping too long.
- 1:27If I'm like laying in bed for 9 hours I'm like what?
- 1:31OK, mine rewards me for napping. I know mine tells me go ahead
- 1:36and go get a nice workout in today.
- 1:38I wonder if that's from the goals you put in.
- 1:40I don't even, I didn't even put in goals.
- 1:42Oh. Well, I mean, maybe maybe I did,
- 1:44I don't remember, but I think it just had me put in like what's
- 1:47your height, What's your weight? What's your lifestyle like?
- 1:49And maybe it's because I put in like my lifestyle is like
- 1:52active, I don't know. But like, I mean, it likes when
- 1:56I get at least 8 hours of sleep. But if I go to bed, say one
- 2:00night, I spend 10 hours in bed, like I'm reading and then go to
- 2:04bed and it'll literally be like, don't do that tomorrow, not.
- 2:09Mild. Not with that verbiage, but
- 2:11it'll basically be like, hey, like we saw that your sedentary
- 2:14state in the evening was quite high.
- 2:15Like we took basically my sleep score was down because of that.
- 2:20Yeah, right. I'm just trying to like, you
- 2:22know, do the thing that people say, unwind, get off your phone
- 2:24before bed, read. Mine tells me don't do that.
- 2:28Oh my gosh, well I've learned. I think I told you this my
- 2:30sneaky way of because it used to dock me for laying in bed, but
- 2:34watching I'm watching TV in bed. You read, I watch TV and it
- 2:39would dock my sleep squarks. It thought I was trying to fall
- 2:42asleep so my latency was longer. Yeah, you were saying I need to
- 2:46try that, like take it off while I'm reading because it's true.
- 2:49Like I will sometimes get in bed and read 3 or 4 pages and I'm
- 2:52already like, I need to put my book down because I need to.
- 2:54Like it makes me want to fall asleep so quickly, which I love
- 2:57because literally then I'm out. But so my like, heart rate and
- 3:01all that must be coming down when I'm laying there and like,
- 3:03relaxing even though I'm awake. But yeah, my ring basically
- 3:07tells me I'm a lazy pile. Isn't that so funny?
- 3:10It's kind of perfect for both of us though, because I really like
- 3:13being lazy, honestly. So funny.
- 3:16Oh yeah, mine will tell me like if I so I totally like in the
- 3:19evenings veg. Like once we're done, we like
- 3:23sit on the couch, eat our dinner, then we watch TV and
- 3:27mine will tell me like if we're two hours, only two hours in for
- 3:30sitting. Like, you need to get up for a
- 3:33second. It'd be really good for you to
- 3:34move. Like, OK, I need to give her a
- 3:38name. Like, kind of like a bullying
- 3:41friend. Yeah, yeah, Brenda.
- 3:44That could be. I'm sorry if there's any
- 3:45Brenda's listening, but I feel like Brenda could be a little
- 3:47bit like nasty. Sometimes I'd like a graphic
- 3:52when I give a name to someone. Well I accidentally gave it my
- 3:55mother in law's name a bunch of times.
- 3:57I think I was just subconscious so.
- 3:58But one time someone was like, excuse me, my name is actually
- 4:05Carol and I do have a golden retriever.
- 4:07And I was like, Oh my God. I'm just sorry, like, well, this
- 4:11one's for you, Carol. Are you watching my good shows?
- 4:18We just finished Fallout. Do you like sci-fi?
- 4:21Kinda Indiana. Anias.
- 4:24What did I just say? Anias.
- 4:26Anias to be Anias. No, no, we're not big sci-fi
- 4:31people like I love like an like Avatar movie.
- 4:34I love like stuff like that. But shows were really not like
- 4:39sci-fi. People that I wouldn't like it,
- 4:41but I do well, this is the one I told you that there's a Malinois
- 4:45and I was like it's actually a really cool looking Malinois and
- 4:48you were like no Bethany, you cannot get a Malinois.
- 4:50Which by the way, this odor that I have and this blew me away and
- 4:53I've never worked with a Malinois except our Malinois mix
- 4:55and our German Shepherd who is very leaning Malinois.
- 4:58I feel like from what I've heard and what and Robbie.
- 5:03Yeah. He's heavily grumbly.
- 5:05He's. He just walks like a Rottweiler.
- 5:08Yes, he's just like, fuck around and find out.
- 5:11But it's funny, we both have goldens right now, but the one
- 5:13golden. So the golden I have the owner
- 5:15shows up and he's like, oh, and I also have a nine year old
- 5:18Malinois. And I was like, what?
- 5:20OK, that's really cool. I don't know, it tells me
- 5:22something. About them really, yeah, they're
- 5:27retired cops so it makes total sense The the thing about it is
- 5:30I trained 1. He almost had to have been a
- 5:33pure like he wasn't pure but like he probably had a little
- 5:35bit of German shepherd in him when they did his DNA test.
- 5:38One of my favorite dogs I honestly ever worked with.
- 5:41And I will say like just like anything like he was just I
- 5:44think a little bit more of well, it had to have been a much more
- 5:47like docile version. He still looks like oh, high
- 5:49energy, kind of like I talk about how Louis is like you guys
- 5:52find her very high energy and she is she's on but like she
- 5:56also has a really and I know it's obviously because she lives
- 5:59with you guys, but she's a really nice off switch and
- 6:03that's it. Same with this like Malinwall
- 6:04mix that I trained. He was actually like really,
- 6:08really awesome. So the breed seems so freaking
- 6:11cool. The only reason I wouldn't get
- 6:12one with not the only reason, there's multiple reasons, but
- 6:15the main reason is I think that like they should go do sport and
- 6:18go do that stuff and I'm not interested.
- 6:21No, you're interested in doing any of that.
- 6:23I saw and I was so like, I would never want to do this and more
- 6:27power to anyone who likes to do it.
- 6:29And this is the thing like even the golden's owner was like, I
- 6:31want to take him. He's ex military and he was
- 6:34like, I don't know, I'm just painting a picture, but he wants
- 6:38to take the golden to like do barn sniffing and like dock
- 6:42diving. And I was like, wow, that's so
- 6:43cool. Like I love that.
- 6:44And but with, Oh, OK, so online I saw I came across another
- 6:50trainer who has a Malinois and was doing like the where the
- 6:54Malmo goes from one side to the other and it's like opening its
- 6:57mouth, panting and like just super excitable.
- 7:00And I was like, OK, that's I'm sure that's cool to a lot of
- 7:02people. I just don't like, I don't like
- 7:04it. I don't know if it's because it
- 7:05feels chaotic. Yeah, it feels so intense, and
- 7:09that's why I wouldn't want one because like, that dog is
- 7:11literally having so much freaking fun.
- 7:13Yes. It's.
- 7:14Perfect. Owner for the dogs.
- 7:16Yeah, yeah, exactly. But otherwise, besides the
- 7:20waking you guys up in the middle of the night, you like your
- 7:22golden. I do.
- 7:24It's a boy, right, Thor? Boy, super sweet, young, so like
- 7:27very malleable. I feel like very food motivated
- 7:30and like I was saying yesterday, I was just trying a couple of
- 7:33things where using food on the walk for something.
- 7:36And normally I don't like using food we talked about as the last
- 7:39podcast episode And I, I, and I feel like I've been mentioning
- 7:44this a lot because I just feel this so strongly.
- 7:46I try to avoid chaotic stuff with dogs and I feel like that's
- 7:49something a lot of people lean into is using the food and doing
- 7:51all the things and that has its place.
- 7:54But I, I'm just overly sensitive, probably from earlier
- 7:57experiences where I tried to do that because I thought it was
- 7:59the right thing to do. I'm just not getting the results
- 8:02that I now feel like I can get. But totally it's been fun
- 8:06working with him. Like that's good.
- 8:08Like kennel stuff. Like I just that I struggle with
- 8:10kennel stuff. Oh yeah, you're like, I want you
- 8:12to be like, show up actually kennel trained.
- 8:15Yes, and he was. Yeah, that's The thing is like,
- 8:19that's some of these dogs that I get into.
- 8:21I'm like, Oh my gosh. Which again, our setup's a
- 8:23little bit different. Like they have to get used to
- 8:25like the traffic moving around them.
- 8:27So like, I totally know dogs are gonna have like transitional
- 8:30periods in our space just cause like that's where I'm working.
- 8:32They're, you know, hearing a lot more than, you know, an enclosed
- 8:36space, which I do kind of miss that.
- 8:38But also I love having our building.
- 8:40But yeah, that's the great day and that I got in yesterday.
- 8:44Like. Oh, which I knew, like I knew
- 8:46she was going to have some of that for sure because they have
- 8:48been still struggling with the FOMO stuff, but I was like, oh,
- 8:51girl is strong willed. I am like she is really
- 8:56committed to this right now. It was actually kind of funny
- 8:58because I was like taking a bazillion like videos just
- 9:00talking about it because I'm like, again, you and I talk
- 9:02about it's like, I want to show the stuff that it's like this
- 9:06isn't, it's annoying. This is stuff that we want to
- 9:09work through and this is how I'm working through it right now
- 9:12because I, it doesn't matter if I can show the dog walking
- 9:15beautifully next to me. That's also fun.
- 9:17I love showing that they look adorable.
- 9:19But I'm like, this is the type of stuff I honestly get asked
- 9:21questions about all of the time. It's like, OK, well, my dog's
- 9:24crate trained, but when this is going on around them, they're
- 9:27barking their head off. So that's why I was trying to
- 9:29like document all of it. I didn't share the rest of this
- 9:31video. Not that I wouldn't.
- 9:32I just was like, OK, I've got a bazillion and a half stories,
- 9:35right Is I was talking. I'm like, it's actually really
- 9:39interesting because in these contexts I'm extremely patient.
- 9:42But otherwise I would not call myself a super patient person.
- 9:46Same. Yeah, like.
- 9:48About you get message from people who are.
- 9:50Like or about me? What?
- 9:52About you or about me? Oh, I feel the same way.
- 9:55See, I feel you're a much more patient person than I am.
- 9:59Really. Yes, Like you're not patient
- 10:01from standpoint of like like taking a second to think about
- 10:05how you can work through it. You're immediately Bobby, but
- 10:08like I'm like think about you and Casey like talking at the
- 10:13trainer and you. I give you both a look like zip
- 10:15it like don't, don't push me. But like with the dog stuff, I'm
- 10:20like, especially when it's new, I'm like, I don't know what
- 10:24comes over me, but my aura is just like, I'm so patient.
- 10:27I bet you get messages from people who are like, wow, you're
- 10:30so patient. Like when I get that I'm like
- 10:33okay, well give me some instructions for an IKEA couch
- 10:35and you I'll lose it. Lose it?
- 10:37Yeah. Sent out the door.
- 10:39Yeah. I don't know if it's just
- 10:40because it's like, because I I feel the same way too.
- 10:44And maybe it's just from experience of working with
- 10:47different dogs and knowing like how this goes and like even
- 10:50yesterday, I'm patient in the. Can you hear Theo digging in his
- 10:54bed? No.
- 10:55OK, so you hit the nice. Mic, I can only hear you.
- 10:58I know. This is so nice.
- 10:59Yeah. So it's because the last episode
- 11:02where Bobby listened, he was like, Oh my God, you sound so
- 11:05terrible on that word. And Kate sounds so amazing.
- 11:07I was like, OK. Well don't worry, I was blurry
- 11:10and you were crystal clear. But yeah, with like yesterday
- 11:15with this golden, I'm like an owner sometimes.
- 11:18And I just even with all my, with this being my 9th year of
- 11:21doing this, I still have a moment like, Oh my God, this
- 11:24entire time is going to be this dog waking me up in the middle
- 11:26of the night. It's one night and it's part of
- 11:29the process. I still have those things where
- 11:31I have to like take a breath Yesterday also with a 77 sleep
- 11:35score. I'm going to keep saying this
- 11:36just because today I got a 96 and I feel like I'm a brand new
- 11:39human. I've never had a 96 mine.
- 11:43Mine's a tough scorer too. But doesn't tell me about
- 11:47Brenda. I know Brenda, if I get a 91,
- 11:50she's like excellent sleep and I'm like, that is excellent.
- 11:52Like I'm always in like the high 80s.
- 11:54So if I get above a 90, I'm like I'm doing something right in
- 11:57this world. I feel like your ring is so
- 12:03perfect for you. It's like you and ring form.
- 12:06Oh no, I'm Brenda. Maybe we need to give a better
- 12:10like better name. That's fine.
- 12:12I I could like align with Brenda.
- 12:13Well, should mine be like a sloth?
- 12:15Like name Claire? No, no.
- 12:19Claire is not. I have an owner who's Claire and
- 12:22she's like such a go getter so I can't use that.
- 12:24But Claire just seems kind of like AI.
- 12:26Feel like a nice sloth hanging from the tree would be named
- 12:29Claire but. Well, did you ever go to
- 12:32Claire's to get like your ear pierced and stuff?
- 12:34I think that's why you got ears down at Claire's too, right?
- 12:37Oh my God, is that why we both have sensitive ears?
- 12:40Well, and also I have your earrings.
- 12:42Go earrings. Remember just a miscellaneous
- 12:532nd hole next to your first hole?
- 12:56It's way too close for comfort. We went.
- 12:59We went to go get dinner. When?
- 13:00Kate yeah, we got to give contacts here.
- 13:02And Kate was like, you should go, I'm so easily influenced and
- 13:05it's hard when I'm in a place where I can buy things and OK,
- 13:09but you. Kept talking about these
- 13:10earrings. Which I have on right now.
- 13:12I'm so excited. I.
- 13:13Still love them. Yeah, they're just like yours.
- 13:15So you were like, you should go in and go get some.
- 13:18And so I like I'll tell the. Guys, you went to the bathroom.
- 13:20Not that like literally, I think we just do that for fun for
- 13:24ourselves because Bobby could do less if you go in and buy
- 13:26something, I think. It was just like, I think I like
- 13:29the narrative of the like. Oh, meekly, go buy these
- 13:32earrings. So I come out, it's in the wrong
- 13:36hole. So I have.
- 13:39Turns out I have three holes. I knew I had two and I had.
- 13:42No idea she had a third, you guys.
- 13:45So it was in the wrong 1st hole. It was slightly too far away
- 13:48from the lobe. OK two things.
- 13:53First I want to know whoever pierced your other hole that
- 13:56close to the first. But how do you not remember
- 14:01getting a third piercing? I mean, it's been 25 years.
- 14:06What am I, 40? So yeah, since I was like in
- 14:09middle school. What is?
- 14:10Going on with this, are you OK? So you're telling me in middle
- 14:14school they like, put the placement wrong and you're like,
- 14:18you know what? I'm gonna go back in.
- 14:20I doubt it. That that's what I'm saying.
- 14:21I'm like, when did this happen? I don't.
- 14:23Know maybe they just did it and it was like oh sorry, and then
- 14:27did another one. I don't know.
- 14:28Oh, I get which. Not in this year.
- 14:31So I think they caught it here and.
- 14:33The point is in that ear too. Oh, it's in bow, it's coming
- 14:38off. It's I feel like it can hear me
- 14:40talking about the hole it's in. Seriously.
- 14:43OK, what were we talking about before we got back to the
- 14:45earrings? I don't know something.
- 14:47I'm really I'm sure, yeah. Oh can I tell you an OK, so can
- 14:51we also mention how we have a thing where we come and have
- 14:55like 3 topics to talk about? Yeah.
- 14:57Have have you been doing that? Yes, well, this morning I was
- 14:59panicked about it. Like Oh my God, I.
- 15:01Gotta have a few topics like oh wing it.
- 15:04Well, last night, because I like just meeting with you so.
- 15:07I'm coming with all the questions which that most of
- 15:10them were trainers that Roden. So I'm like, so that'll be like
- 15:13our trainer topic. OK, I love that.
- 15:15Well, because I have something that happened last night.
- 15:19And also if she's listening, I don't want to make her feel bad
- 15:21at all. It's an owner who she texted me
- 15:25and it's just on the I don't know the reality of being a
- 15:28trainer. And sometimes it's hard to not
- 15:30take on things from owners. Like I'm not at a place where I
- 15:35like we heard trainers talking about this at the trainer and
- 15:36you where people struggle with like if someone struggling, they
- 15:40think it's like they have to fix it.
- 15:41I don't have that. I'm like, I give you all the
- 15:44information. I try to help you.
- 15:45If you take it, great. If not, not my not my thing.
- 15:48Yeah, but an owner who I really like.
- 15:51She texted me last night and said her dog bit someone and
- 15:55this. Is wild because I'll jump in as
- 15:57well. I've just had a very similar
- 15:59situation with an owner. Not a way not biting a person
- 16:02biting a dog and I talked to her yesterday.
- 16:04So this is wild. Keep going.
- 16:05Whoa. OK, that's so weird.
- 16:07Yeah OK OK I'll tell mine and I want to hear yours so and it's
- 16:11this really sweet dog who I loved working with like sweet.
- 16:15I'm not going to say what kind of dog but.
- 16:17And so she said she took him to this like small dog park area at
- 16:23her condo which I've told her not to go to blah blah blah.
- 16:27But there's like 2 dogs that they'll meet up with and he is
- 16:29friendly but reactive on leash. So she said someone she was
- 16:33picking up poop had her back turned.
- 16:36Someone came in to open the gate, their little King Charles
- 16:39Cavalier, her dog ran over, went to try to go after that dog.
- 16:44The owner picked the dog up and he went up and bit the owner.
- 16:48And then she said we're also in another lawsuit for another bite
- 16:51that has happened. And I'm like, what?
- 16:54And this is it. I shouldn't have even looked at
- 16:55the text, but I really like this owner.
- 16:57And it was like 6:00 PM and I was thinking, Oh my gosh, I'm
- 17:00like a little stressed about this dog I have.
- 17:01And now like, I really have to try and protect my mental space.
- 17:07And so, but it was kind of like a feeling of I care for this
- 17:11owner and dog, but also I can't like take on this.
- 17:14There's only so much I can do. And so anyway, it was just the
- 17:17feelings of like those are. Really, really tough because
- 17:21it's like, like you said, you care about the owner, you care
- 17:23about the dog. But then we have to take a step
- 17:26back and think, OK, well, if we are currently in a lawsuit, why
- 17:31are we opening ourselves potential?
- 17:33And I get it, like you can't control it all, but it is still
- 17:36a little bit of like a public space at your apartment complex.
- 17:39Like anyone can come in, anyone can go out.
- 17:42So I totally get that. I had to call again also with an
- 17:45owner I love, a dog I loved and they just got a brand new puppy
- 17:50and their is their third dog. And the dog that I trained, the
- 17:54middle dog, he is extremely, extremely low tolerance to dogs
- 17:59in his space. Like he's not like a dog that I
- 18:01would consider like I could have him out in the social yard.
- 18:03And as long as I'm telling dogs like go like moving around, he's
- 18:06not like looking for trouble. But also he wants to sniff
- 18:08everyone's butt, but then does not want anyone sniffing his.
- 18:11So I also don't let him. I'm like, no, like you don't get
- 18:13to come out here and be like, I'm gonna sniff everyone.
- 18:17And then one person even walks past his rear and he's like
- 18:20baring his teeth and stuff. So I really called his bullshit
- 18:22on that. I don't even know if we're
- 18:24supposed to swear on our podcast.
- 18:25I. Would like us to.
- 18:26Yeah, I would like us to. And so I'm talking to the owner.
- 18:31And so I'm trying to get the context of he just bit the new
- 18:33puppy twice. And we're talking a 12 week old
- 18:36puppy. Like puppies are annoying.
- 18:37We know our dog has, you know, issues with space in general.
- 18:42But we're talking and I'm starting to hear a lot of like
- 18:46the dog is, you know, being bad or the dog is doing something
- 18:48naughty. The dog is not doing this.
- 18:50And I had to take a step back and say, OK, I hear a lot of
- 18:53like the dog is, the dog is. And I had to say in this
- 18:57context, I'm asking, was AZ collar on?
- 18:59Well, no, I'm like, I'm like right there.
- 19:01Like this is not just about the dog.
- 19:03Like why was he back in your bed right after training when I
- 19:07literally said this is a dog that cannot handle that?
- 19:10Like why is he on the couch? What?
- 19:11It's just like a lot of things where it's like I was saying
- 19:14things that she knew and you know, there's a reason they're
- 19:16asking for additional support, but there's also stuff where
- 19:20it's like if you're not implementing, this isn't even I
- 19:23mean it isn't even been 90 days since he's been home.
- 19:27So I'm like, you know, if we're not implementing it like we will
- 19:30continue to support if you're implementing.
- 19:33And I get that that's so even again, if either of these owners
- 19:36are listening, this is not a you guys suck as owners or anything
- 19:40like that. It's just the reality of we're
- 19:41working with so many people, so many dogs, and there are owners
- 19:45busting their rears, working really hard, even if it means
- 19:49like it's not exactly how we would do it, but they're trying
- 19:53to do it as dotting their eyes and crossing their T's as they
- 19:57possibly can. Those are even the owners.
- 19:58Personally for me, I'm going to continue to go to bat for it,
- 20:01even if sometimes it feels a little exhausting because some
- 20:03dogs are exhausting. And I usually find it's those
- 20:06owners with the dogs that are exhausting that are really
- 20:09trying. So yeah, I.
- 20:13It's just a it's tough because I know other trainers, it's
- 20:16actually it'll kind of lead in nicely to some of our questions.
- 20:19We have really, really struggle with this.
- 20:21And I get it. Like I also like the second I
- 20:24hear like this dog bit that or it's like, Oh my gosh, like what
- 20:27I do sometimes jump into like could I have done something
- 20:29differently to like prep them for this?
- 20:33But then also it's like sometimes I'm sure you
- 20:34experienced this too. You don't even experience the
- 20:38dog even close the same way that the owner does.
- 20:40No, well, because it's so it's managed like if I had a dog and
- 20:46this is where it's like it's not really fair and I don't mean to
- 20:49be judgy, but I almost immediately jump into like I
- 20:53would never let that happen. Like I wouldn't like if I I
- 20:57think also, and I don't know if it's because like, let's say if
- 21:01Theo, I don't even have to jump into like what ifs, but it's
- 21:05more like that part. And I think it's just important.
- 21:07It's helpful just to talk it through of like we also have to
- 21:11protect our mental headspace and we can't take on as much as I
- 21:15would love to be able. I mean, she lives like 4 hours
- 21:17for me, but I would love to drive over and console her and
- 21:20like be a friend to her. And that's kind of where it kind
- 21:22of blurs the lines of trainer and owners.
- 21:26And I, I love being friends with the owners that I'm friends
- 21:28with, but it's also I can be there for you.
- 21:32And I think it's This is why being a dog trainer has helped
- 21:34me overcome like the people pleasing tendency or so it's
- 21:40just one of those practices of like hearing it, but then also
- 21:44kind of filtering it in a way where it's not keeping me up at
- 21:47night. I care for this owner and dog,
- 21:49but it's also self, it's accountability.
- 21:53And so we try our best to help and do everything that we can.
- 21:57But I think the only way I could have helped prevent that was
- 22:00being in their home. Exactly.
- 22:01Yeah. You know.
- 22:02Yeah, we we don't live life with their dogs.
- 22:04And there's certain things too that sometimes like how feel
- 22:08like, what, like how, how is it coming out of your mouth?
- 22:13And like, I feel like we are so crystal clear on like the
- 22:17boundaries and the expectations and like, I mean, people will
- 22:22literally be like, it's tough love, Kate.
- 22:24And it's like, you know, so to me, I'm sometimes I'm hearing
- 22:27stuff out loud. I'm like, did you have to maybe
- 22:29say it out loud to really hear it?
- 22:31Because I'll even take a pause of being like, I don't even know
- 22:33how to fully answer that without.
- 22:34I don't want to be like, did you just hear what came out of your
- 22:37mouth? Like.
- 22:38Oh, and you were on the phone call.
- 22:39Video call. Oh, wow.
- 22:41So I was on X, so I had a moment to be like, Bobby, look, look at
- 22:45what is when I told him. And I was like, Can you believe
- 22:47that? And it's like, no, because he
- 22:49even remembers the dog. It's like, yeah, I think this is
- 22:52the hardest part of being a dog trainer and one of the hardest
- 22:57parts. But I think luckily we're both
- 23:00at a place where we've grown and we've learned and we've had a
- 23:03lot of experiences where we probably went above and beyond
- 23:05and realized there's only so much we can do that we can kind
- 23:08of protect ourselves a little bit in that way.
- 23:10But I still think we both had that yesterday.
- 23:12I know that's crazy. I feel like it's also like kind
- 23:15of this weird fine line of like when you've worked with
- 23:18someone's dog who most of the time same with us, like their
- 23:21dogs mean so much to them. It becomes like just this very
- 23:26different type of relationship. Then like, you know, some people
- 23:29use examples like, well, would you just like call your
- 23:31hairdresser? And it's like, what's so
- 23:32different? Like I get that concept and I
- 23:34even think about it. I'm like, OK, like maybe like
- 23:37you're, I was trying to think of like, how can I connect this to
- 23:40more like a human way? It's like, maybe it's like your
- 23:44child's doctor or something and it's like, OK, they have
- 23:47something. Well, the process you're going
- 23:49to have to go through is putting a message into like your we have
- 23:52something called like my chart, wait for a response, book an
- 23:56appointment, go in. And not that it's the same
- 23:58thing, but it's like, you know, you thinking at 6:00 PM like, Oh
- 24:01my gosh, like should I respond to this?
- 24:03Should I not like the doctors wouldn't be.
- 24:06And if it's an emergency, they have to go into the emergency
- 24:08room. Like I know it's like not why
- 24:11we're in the business for this is to have like this like super
- 24:13structured, like regimented. This is the way that you
- 24:16communicate. But and I also do feel for the
- 24:19owners in those moments because they are reaching out to the
- 24:22person that has helped them and has helped them feel safe.
- 24:26So I always put myself into that perspective, but we also both
- 24:30did start as owners as well. So I try to think like, OK, I
- 24:34need to take a step back, think about what we've applied, think
- 24:36about not being reactionary in the moment because it's like
- 24:40most of us are doing this with our reactive dog.
- 24:43So yeah, it makes my like head spin, but also like I feel both
- 24:50sides so strongly, like I understand where the owners
- 24:54coming from. And then on the trainer side,
- 24:55I'm like, we have to protect ourselves.
- 24:57We have a protector space. We can only do so much.
- 24:59So I actually like thinking about it, and I know it sounds
- 25:03kind of weird, like maybe even I like talking about it.
- 25:06I think that like if owners can hear trainers talking about the
- 25:10real stuff of like the reality of where our brain is going when
- 25:15we get these types of texts or when we get these types of
- 25:17messages, and they can as an human and as an adult take it
- 25:22and not as a attack, they're going to be able to get
- 25:24something from this. But if they.
- 25:26Take it as an attack like that is something they have to do a
- 25:29reflection on. That's not US or their trainer.
- 25:34And of course there's I'm sure there's some trainers that are
- 25:36legitimately out there like shaming owners and saying you're
- 25:39not doing enough and you suck and blah, blah, blah.
- 25:41But that's never been us and never will be us.
- 25:45So for any owners that listen to this, that do struggle with
- 25:49their dog, even if they struggle and like your trainer never does
- 25:53or you do have a hard dog, like take a step back and think about
- 25:57like, what are some of the little moments we might be like
- 25:59missing that we can tighten up? Because if you start there,
- 26:02that's literally what Bethany Iowa would do if you send your
- 26:05dog here for another refresh or something like that.
- 26:07Like we're just going to apply all of the things that we put in
- 26:10our go home book. Yeah.
- 26:12And stick to it. Yeah.
- 26:14And it's it's really not that complicated.
- 26:17It's really more, I think people over complicate it where it's
- 26:20actually just simplifying it to like 3 things and just being
- 26:24really consistent with it. It's yeah.
- 26:27And I sometimes I was just thinking about this yesterday
- 26:28where I sometimes I really get curious about what is the
- 26:34biggest difference between owners and trainers.
- 26:36And like, you know the thing you'll hear, I don't really hear
- 26:38people say this, but I know it's out there where the board and
- 26:41train doesn't work or which is not true, but it's why do
- 26:46trainers get different results than owners?
- 26:48And I literally think it's just being more consistent with
- 26:51structure, withholding dogs accountable for things.
- 26:54And looking at it maybe through a lens of we know if we let a
- 26:57dog get a bit more loosey goosey on the walk when the dog is
- 27:00reactive, usually it's just going to create more reactivity.
- 27:03It's like a slippery slope where I think an owner just doesn't
- 27:06pick up on the small things. And unfortunately these bad
- 27:10situations have to happen to be like, oh shit, yeah, I need to
- 27:14tighten up on things. And hopefully it's they still
- 27:16have that opportunity to do that.
- 27:18I think another thing is like, we also eliminate the
- 27:21unnecessaries. And what I mean by that is I do
- 27:24feel for owners of like even the content you're seeing of like
- 27:28getting this licky mat for your dog.
- 27:30Are you doing enough for enrichment?
- 27:31Are you doing these types of games?
- 27:33Are you doing these types of stuff?
- 27:35The amount of owners that I see, the things they have for their
- 27:38dogs, the busyness that they're keeping them.
- 27:41And then in my mind, I'm literally like, you are truly
- 27:46causing an anxious dog. Like they are so unhinged.
- 27:51And I look at like how we even when we were with you guys, our
- 27:56dogs, they all live such a good life.
- 27:58But it's a very simple life. Yeah.
- 28:00And they are like, genuinely, they all have their things.
- 28:03So again, this is not me acting like we have perfect dogs.
- 28:07But they are relaxed, yes, and they are.
- 28:10They're still bark and stuff like they're still dogs, they're
- 28:13still. Yes, and then they get activity
- 28:16and they like love it and they can, but you're never seeing me
- 28:21like have I ever done it? Sure, but my dogs don't do
- 28:24snuffle mats. I don't do you know, I don't do
- 28:29those extra things. And that doesn't mean that you
- 28:31can't do those extra things. But all I'm saying is the amount
- 28:34of like we need to give, give, give, give of activity and Oh
- 28:41well, my dog's this so that they need a lot of brain work and
- 28:43blah, blah, blah. I see it time and time again.
- 28:46Those are the dogs. Those are the owners that
- 28:48struggle the most at home is the one.
- 28:51That well, this golden, that's what's going on.
- 28:54So they were giving the they were giving Thor boys in the
- 28:59kennel anytime he was in the kennel.
- 29:03It just. Creates so much excitement and
- 29:06I, I get why people do it. I'm sure for some people it
- 29:09works really well for me from a safety standpoint, I'm not going
- 29:12to have a dog in the kennel where I'm not always at like
- 29:15supervising with a toy. They could choke on it like I
- 29:18don't know. But, and I learned my lesson
- 29:20with that. When someone we don't even put,
- 29:22it's very rare. Like if I get a dog that comes
- 29:25back for boarding, sure they could be super cushy.
- 29:27I could put a blanket in because I know them well, but these two
- 29:30Frenchies I worked with, the owner brought their two little
- 29:34beds. They're like, they never chew on
- 29:36it. It's never an issue.
- 29:38It's like, OK, so I put the beds in there.
- 29:42We I don't know if like we went to the grocery store or
- 29:45something, but came back, looked at the camera and one of them
- 29:47was tore up. And I immediately panic like, Oh
- 29:50my God, they swallowed all of it.
- 29:51Like this is so terrible. I jumped to the worst case
- 29:54scenario. So I'd never have beds and
- 29:56fluffy stuff in the kennel anymore.
- 29:58But yeah, stuff like that where I think I almost said parents,
- 30:01owners want to fill all the moments.
- 30:04They don't want their dog to be bored or to be uncomfortable
- 30:07where we just see where it's just feeding that excitement and
- 30:10it's like. It's.
- 30:12Unhorbit it. Is truly unhinged and this might
- 30:16be an unpopular opinion, but I stand by it like we see it time
- 30:19and time again like it is it is truly those and especially when
- 30:23I see it with reactive dogs and I get it.
- 30:25The owners are probably like, OK, well, I got to like do more
- 30:28so that when I take them on the walk, they're more tired.
- 30:30And it's like, no, like those dogs are wound tight because you
- 30:35are there's they are getting too much interaction.
- 30:39Like I really think that like in the best way, like the pandemic
- 30:45hindered and helped dog owners because it's like, I do love
- 30:48that more dogs are getting higher levels of fulfillment.
- 30:51I do not think I do not like glorifying a couch potato.
- 30:55I do not like the being like, well, my dog doesn't really like
- 30:57walks. Like, and when we're talking
- 31:00about, you know, Roadie, for instance, or Charlie, like,
- 31:03yeah, their walks are shorter. They're they're senior dogs.
- 31:06Like that's completely different.
- 31:08But when we're hearing like a 2 year old dog of like, oh, well,
- 31:11my dog doesn't like to go for walks because, you know, seeing
- 31:13the garbage cans or something freaks them out.
- 31:15That's none of us. Are you?
- 31:17And I are not saying like, OK, yeah, then just keep them
- 31:18inside. We're saying work through it,
- 31:21you know, build up this confidence.
- 31:22But I will not be the person that's like, yeah, if your dog
- 31:26just seems really bored, go give them a puzzle.
- 31:29I'm not. It's just not going to be me.
- 31:33And I do some of those things sometimes, like I have down, I
- 31:36don't have any puzzles. But down the come, I have a
- 31:38couple snuffle mats. I like to use them for puppies
- 31:40time to time, especially if like if a young dog come there for
- 31:43boarding and I'm like, you are a busy body.
- 31:44I'm going to pop you on the treadmill.
- 31:45Then you can eat your meal on this.
- 31:47Don't care. But like, it's doesn't go much
- 31:50beyond that. Well, and it's not an all or
- 31:52nothing ever. I don't ever.
- 31:54Yeah, that's why also as trainers who share a lot online,
- 31:58and I think we both probably get our fair share of, like,
- 32:00pushback sometimes. And I think I'm also, like,
- 32:03protecting myself in a way of being like, this is not for
- 32:06everyone. I'm only speaking from a space
- 32:08of this has worked for me and whatever works for you is great.
- 32:12It's like, I don't like. But yeah, what you're saying
- 32:14where it's an unpopular opinion and it's just based on our
- 32:17experience and how we like to live life with dogs.
- 32:20Yeah. And I think that that's being
- 32:22clear and crystal like what being clear with the owners
- 32:27about that and showing that and talking about it will help them
- 32:29decide if like we're the right trainer for them to work with or
- 32:33if we can help them virtually or whatever.
- 32:35And that's that's OK if that's not the route people want to go.
- 32:38But I rarely ever have on drop off day owners being like, I
- 32:43really, really need them to be less calm and more hyper.
- 32:48I've never. I've never had.
- 32:49That I have had a couple. Dogs who are like, well, you
- 32:52know, an English bulldog or something's like, well, they
- 32:54tire quickly and like, Yep, that's the breed.
- 32:57But I've never had an owner be like, please make my dog more
- 33:00chaotic. I need them to be more reactive.
- 33:02Can you work on? Them well, and it's also like
- 33:04when people, you know, like people think a happy dog is a
- 33:07dog that's like and I even sometimes describe it as like
- 33:10when Johnny has a tongue out, I feel like he's smiling.
- 33:12You know, I just do that. Pity face looks like they're
- 33:15smiling cash. But like, yeah, that's so funny
- 33:19because yesterday when I was well, because I think a lot of
- 33:22people look at like the calm stuff or place is like unhappy.
- 33:26I don't know, I don't really hear that much.
- 33:28But it's like to me, I love, I just love the calm stuff.
- 33:32Like even yesterday on the walk with the golden and I'm like
- 33:34thinking, because another dog I worked with where the owner was
- 33:37using a lot of food on the walks and so the dog would blink her
- 33:40hand and I'm like immediately, I don't know, is this just my
- 33:44trainer brain or this is just I don't like this.
- 33:46But to me I was like, I don't like that's like pushy to me.
- 33:48I don't want a dog always blinking my hand but boink is
- 33:52such a weird word. Why am I saying boink?
- 33:54Touch and tap my hand? I don't know, I don't like.
- 33:56That word? Boinking.
- 33:58OK. Because it's weird.
- 34:01I don't like that. OK, so yesterday Dori started
- 34:04blinking my hand. Who?
- 34:06Who did? Thor because I.
- 34:09Used the horse. I was like, oh, you're what?
- 34:12Thor the Golden who I was using some food with on the walk.
- 34:15I usually like to use food for things like when they, you know,
- 34:18sit. When I stop, they sit kind of a
- 34:20thing. And I did that a lot with
- 34:22Johnny. But this morning he was like
- 34:24blinking my hand sometimes. And I was like, Oh my God, we
- 34:26just did this yesterday once. Really.
- 34:28We did this once. And now he's like, OK, I'm tired
- 34:31of saying blink, by the way. OK, what?
- 34:34Wait, should we jump into some questions?
- 34:35Some of the questions, while we're on the topics of well,
- 34:39questions from trainers. So this one was they didn't have
- 34:42enough room in the question box. So she sent me Adm Basically the
- 34:47question is how to vet clients that you'll know will do the
- 34:50work. I'll message more than her
- 34:51message is. I had a client recently who
- 34:54thought who I thought seemed ready to help her two dogs with
- 34:57their littermate syndrome. Both super super anxious and
- 35:00destructive dogs. She kept saying how she'll be
- 35:02putting in the work, she's ready to follow through, etcetera.
- 35:05Sent home, she said the first few days were great.
- 35:08Two weeks later I follow up. Turns out she got rid of one of
- 35:11the dogs after returning, then said the training wasn't
- 35:15working. Long story short, how the fuck
- 35:18do I vet a client so they truly truly understand they have a
- 35:21follow through? I would have never taken her
- 35:23money if I knew she wouldn't use it and moving forward I want to
- 35:26ensure behavioral cases are only with the correct owners.
- 35:30I have an initial thought right off the bat and I'm not saying
- 35:34that this is wrong whatsoever, but sometimes if there are these
- 35:37dogs that you're working with that you immediately are super
- 35:41concerned for when they go home of like how they're going to do
- 35:44when she says the two weeks later I followed up.
- 35:46I know in your heart of hearts you're like, that's probably
- 35:50what I should do. I probably wouldn't have
- 35:52followed up. I'm just saying like I like to
- 35:55typically, unless I know it's something that like an owner for
- 35:58sure is working on a once, Hey, how did this go?
- 36:01Like I knew you had this coming up, but I usually leave it in
- 36:04the owner's court to reach out to me if they like have any
- 36:07questions. That is more like a protecting
- 36:10your piece type of thing. So that doesn't necessarily have
- 36:12anything to do with vetting your owners, but that might be
- 36:15something that and like you might have just never even known
- 36:18because you didn't even know she got rid of the dog.
- 36:21You didn't know that beyond things were going great the
- 36:23first two days that things are not going great.
- 36:26And I don't know if that's the right answer, but sometimes I do
- 36:30feel like I have to sometimes not follow up just because I
- 36:35can't, you know, however many dogs go home, I can't take on
- 36:39everyone's what feels like in an emergency.
- 36:42And they're not all an emergency.
- 36:44Yes. So that's one initial thought I
- 36:46had with that. So I'd be curious.
- 36:49So what I do is I'll I'll usually reach out a day later or
- 36:53two days later. And what I also always say, and
- 36:57that's only from being scarred from experience a long time ago
- 37:00where an older lady I worked with who is not a right fit from
- 37:02the beginning. But one thing she said was, I
- 37:06wish you would have reached out to ask how things went.
- 37:08And again, we know that that falls on the owner.
- 37:11We can't do the work for them. And so now I like go home
- 37:14sessions, I say to nauseam, I don't know if you're struggling
- 37:19unless you tell me yes. And I always say, please, if you
- 37:21have a question or something is happening, I want to help you,
- 37:24but I do not know you're struggling unless you tell me
- 37:26exactly. And so, but sometimes I don't
- 37:28actually don't always reach out a couple days after.
- 37:31But what I'll say is. Follow up to everyone, a follow
- 37:33up e-mail, I feel like a blanketed one that's just
- 37:37basically, again, like reiterating like I am here to
- 37:40help you, but basically I won't be like following up and you
- 37:44know, here's support for you. Like if you guys are doing
- 37:46things at home, reach out like I am here for you can text me, you
- 37:50can message me, you can e-mail me.
- 37:52I will get back to you when I can type of thing.
- 37:54So I send it after every dog goes home.
- 37:58OK. So I would be curious with this
- 38:00trainer if some of her Spidey senses kind of went off when she
- 38:04first talked to the owner. I feel like that's just your
- 38:08intuition that a lot of us blow off because when we want
- 38:11business and two, we're hoping that it will go better than it
- 38:15is or it might go. But I would look at maybe if,
- 38:21and again, like you were saying, sometimes you just can't stop
- 38:23that from happening. Sometimes you miss all the
- 38:25things and then nothing comes up until the owner, the dog gets
- 38:29home. But I would look at what are
- 38:31some other questions that maybe you could put on your contact
- 38:34form on your website. Is there one thing you could
- 38:36change where it's, I'm even thinking of doing this where
- 38:39it's a question like after the board and train.
- 38:43Do you understand that if you are having issues or concerns
- 38:46you will reach out or something? I don't know how to word it, but
- 38:48something where you know the owner is going to continue the
- 38:51progress after, yeah, I think. I even wrote back to her and
- 38:55just as like thought I said, why was that like we'll cover this
- 38:58on the pod. I said, I'm curious if there are
- 39:00any other red flags you can recall like on that application
- 39:03or anything like any concerns on tool use.
- 39:05And we're not just talking E caller like kennel place like
- 39:08something I typically look at a lot is like one of the questions
- 39:11on my application is post training.
- 39:14Are you going to comfortably follow the recommendation of
- 39:18kenneling your dog at night and when you're away from the home
- 39:21post training like things like that or like questions where
- 39:24it's like, you know, if canine were to ask you, this is for
- 39:29everyone's application to muzzle condition your dog, is that
- 39:32something you would do? And I will have people even if
- 39:35their dog doesn't need to be muzzle conditioned Put no.
- 39:38And I'm OK with that. Like, but immediately to me,
- 39:41it's like, but what if it was something that like I would
- 39:46really ask them to do? Like it's those little extra
- 39:48things that I kind of try to read into not to in a point
- 39:51where it's making me crazy because it's like, we don't know
- 39:55the human. Even if you're doing every sort
- 39:56of consult until you get that dog and you start working with
- 40:00them and you see how the emotional responses from that
- 40:02human, you can see the most successful hard working people
- 40:09will be some of the like. Softest with their dog like not
- 40:14follow through because they have to follow through in every other
- 40:17aspect of their life. So to me also how you're wording
- 40:21and again, maybe this is just because this is post working
- 40:23with them of like she has litter mate syndrome.
- 40:27Both dogs are super anxious and both destructive.
- 40:30And she kept saying how she'll be putting in the work and she's
- 40:32ready to follow through. What about it prior?
- 40:35And that's kind of what Bethany was saying is like what in your
- 40:37Spidey senses felt like you needed to like make sure she
- 40:40really was ready? Because I feel like often when
- 40:44there's dogs and owners that are really struggling, you could
- 40:47tell the ones right off the bat that are like not sugar coating
- 40:50their dogs behavior. Think about how like this is
- 40:53kind of like our last ditch effort, like I, I need to make
- 40:58these changes. Otherwise, like we are going to
- 41:01have to like rehome one. And honestly, that might have
- 41:04been the best decision to where you probably feel like as a
- 41:08trainer, kind of like a failure, which you are not because she
- 41:12did rehome one of the dogs. But honestly, if they truly have
- 41:16the littermate syndrome, that's not good for anyone.
- 41:20Like no one's enjoying that. Like I've been curious.
- 41:22Like the part where I think you said she said the training isn't
- 41:26working, to me that line says a lot.
- 41:30And I'd be really curious if during the training process one,
- 41:34what does it look like for you? Like not everyone shares a lot
- 41:36on social media with dogs like we do.
- 41:39She does. Share quite a bit.
- 41:40OK, cool. Is were you getting any feedback
- 41:43during the process? Like I recently an owner I had,
- 41:48I had I worked with who was not responding to anything and this
- 41:53not everyone has to do this, but I I tend to, I like working with
- 41:58owners where I can communicate freely.
- 42:00And if I get like an instinct, like my Spidey senses were like,
- 42:03wait, is she like not on board with this?
- 42:05Or I just want to kind of touch base and see how she's feeling.
- 42:11A lot of times when I get on a phone call with an owner, I've
- 42:13learned some different things or it's like, oh, great, OK, you're
- 42:16not responding to anything because you're more introverted,
- 42:18but you're on board and everything's going good.
- 42:21Great. What I would also think about
- 42:23doing is if you ever have an owner who is not being
- 42:27responsive to stuff or I don't even know what that line of
- 42:31communication would look like. For me it's through text, but if
- 42:35you want to get on a phone, call with them and maybe check in.
- 42:38While you have the dogs. Yes, while you have the dogs
- 42:40check in and see hey, where you at like you've been following on
- 42:43Instagram. Do you have any questions and
- 42:46kind of just gauge it that way about?
- 42:48Things. How are you feeling about
- 42:49things? Yeah.
- 42:50So that's where I would think to ask and just look at the you
- 42:56work with after. Yeah.
- 42:57And that's the thing about this one is obviously it's just a
- 42:59learning experience because you might have not missed anything.
- 43:01But obviously I think something of your Spidey senses, we're
- 43:03telling you something might not be right.
- 43:06But also like at the go home session, think about this was
- 43:11something when we talked about the trainer and you, some of the
- 43:12trainers are like, whoa, like really.
- 43:14Like if if you feel like you have to keep driving the go home
- 43:18in a way where it's like the owners not really asking
- 43:21questions, but you're thinking, well, this has got to be two
- 43:23hours. This has got to be 2 1/2 hours.
- 43:25And you're not leaving space for silent moments for the owner to
- 43:29like almost kind of struggle a little bit because they're going
- 43:31to struggle when you go back home.
- 43:33Like don't, don't try to keep the session going longer just
- 43:37because you're like, well, it these dogs need more work.
- 43:39They need like, if you can feel that the owner's not in it at
- 43:42the go home, that to me tells a lot.
- 43:45Like if I can tell they're not asking really many questions And
- 43:47everyone learns differently. So I know some people need to,
- 43:50like, take it all in and like, really like, hear it out, try
- 43:55it. But if you can kind of tell
- 43:57they're like, yeah, no, like, I'm good.
- 43:58Like, don't feel like you have to keep them there.
- 44:00Like at that point, it's like, OK, they said they're good.
- 44:03They are an adult. These are their dogs, not my
- 44:06dogs. And as much as you want to cover
- 44:09absolutely everything, you can't like, yeah.
- 44:12And the owners already checked out if they're kind of being
- 44:14like almost rushing the go home. So I'm not saying that she was
- 44:18doing that by any means, but I'm almost curious on if she was
- 44:20kind of a person that did that. But you know, it's not easy to
- 44:24vet everyone. I will say you and I have we
- 44:27rarely now run into like, Oh my gosh, working with this.
- 44:30Like rarely there's a couple words like, again, they go home
- 44:33and I'm like, Oh my gosh, like you're way less dedicated and
- 44:37consistent than I thought you would be.
- 44:39But like doesn't mean that there still weren't great owners to
- 44:41work with. Yeah.
- 44:43And I think sometimes stuff like this just happens.
- 44:45It does, you know? Yeah.
- 44:47OK, next one. We've talked about this quite a
- 44:50few times, but again, I think that's a cool thing about you
- 44:52can't talk about everything enough is how did we got, how
- 44:57did we originally meet? Oh, OK.
- 45:00I don't know why it was like drawing a blank.
- 45:05We met through Instagram. Yeah, yeah, I don't even
- 45:08remember what how we originally got connected, but we just
- 45:10started chatting on Instagram and then we went to a program
- 45:15for trainers very similar. Well, not similar but like same
- 45:18kind of concept as what we do for the trainer new and we room
- 45:22together not, you know, knowing each other at all.
- 45:25And we've literally, I mean obviously your friendship grows,
- 45:28but we've been best friends since and visit each other every
- 45:31single year since. Yeah, yeah.
- 45:33Well, we've supported each. I remember before we went to
- 45:36that seminar and met in person, we supported each other a lot on
- 45:40social media before then. Did we even do a live before to
- 45:45like talk to each other? Oh.
- 45:47My gosh, I don't know. I don't know, I forget which one
- 45:50It was where I remember saying this to you and Casey, But when
- 45:54we did a live together and I remember I don't know how you
- 45:57were doing this, but I feel like you commented in the chat on the
- 46:00live. We were drinking wine, which we
- 46:04don't really do that anymore, but you were like Casey, I'm
- 46:07drinking wine. Winky face just.
- 46:12Just throwing a quick little word.
- 46:15In the chat on the live and I was like, because how else would
- 46:18I see you say that? That's probably how it was.
- 46:20And I was like, Oh my God. So but yeah, we would just I
- 46:24think we've also made a a really an effort towards keeping our
- 46:29friendship alive and thriving. Like I have friends who I.
- 46:34This because we want to talk every week, we want to
- 46:37prioritize talking every week. And if it means that we can talk
- 46:41personal and business, which we love doing together, it's like,
- 46:45why not? Yes, yeah.
- 46:47But I have friends in town that I don't hang out with as much as
- 46:50I hang out with you. Yeah.
- 46:54That's how we met. Of course we're gonna go into
- 46:56like or like as close as we are, like we can pick up.
- 47:00No time has gone by. Talk about our friendship all
- 47:03day long. I'm pretty distracted by how
- 47:05cute you look and I look like I just woke up from a nap.
- 47:08That was us last week. I had wet hair post power and
- 47:12years Really your hair looked. Amazing when your hair is curly
- 47:14it's very Jlo esque. I know when you said that when
- 47:18we were together, I was like, you're like, I don't know if you
- 47:19like this. I'm like, you can tell me.
- 47:21I look like Jlo on her worst day and I'm like.
- 47:24Obviously. Why would anyone not like that?
- 47:25I don't even know why I said that.
- 47:27Yeah. Neither, I was like anytime you
- 47:30were telling me my butt looks like Jlo too.
- 47:32Yes please. I know you'll be lying to me,
- 47:35but it's OK I. Can't even imagine which.
- 47:37By the way, why do you always say, Can you imagine?
- 47:39How did that come up? Because when you all were in
- 47:41town, we said, Can you imagine? In almost every single
- 47:44conversation? We were trying to decide if we
- 47:45should say, you know what I mean or can you Can you imagine as
- 47:48our podcast title because those are the two things we say all
- 47:51the time. All the time.
- 47:53That the Can you imagine? That's something with that I do
- 47:57with you. Oh, really?
- 47:59Casey says it sometimes, though. OK, so maybe Casey and I, I
- 48:03maybe I do say it with more, but I don't know.
- 48:05But like it is definitely the one of the most common phrases I
- 48:09say with you. Oh my.
- 48:10God, I thought, you see. Though, and I don't know if it's
- 48:12like we're in each other. I literally feel like I was
- 48:15saying it all the time, like I was saying it like the sky is
- 48:17blue, like just all the time I was.
- 48:19Saying yes, it's so. Fitting.
- 48:22Yeah, I don't know. OK, so anyone that does drink,
- 48:26if you're listening to this and we say Can you imagine?
- 48:28Drink every single time, we say. Can you imagine?
- 48:30And if you can get a Bee's Knees cocktail.
- 48:34Bomb. I'm going to that.
- 48:36We're going to that. The two people at the house on
- 48:38the lake in our neighborhood for sunset and cocktails was the
- 48:42original text. And then I got a reminder text
- 48:45saying OK don't forget. Reminded you.
- 48:48This is how she phrased it, and you tell me what your instinct
- 48:50says. I mean, it's still delightful.
- 48:52Lasagna and booze this Friday. Booze.
- 48:57Isn't that like? OK, you could step back.
- 48:59You're also going to dinner at a baby boomers house where our
- 49:04generation, you're in like the very tail end of millennials.
- 49:08I think it's a great trend that's happening.
- 49:10But like drinking is at an all time low, which is amazing.
- 49:14But the people still keeping it alive are those baby boomers.
- 49:17I mean, when she said booze, I was like, oh, oh boy.
- 49:19Like, yeah. Maybe she's very excited, but
- 49:23also you do you. You don't, you know as you know
- 49:26this, but like, well, you're also easily influenced.
- 49:28But like, you don't need to booze it up with 70 year olds.
- 49:34Can you imagine, wait, can we do that as our like lead out of the
- 49:37that's way more natural at the end of the podcast because you
- 49:40know you don't. Say that and then you know what
- 49:42I means. OK, but because you are so good
- 49:44at it and I black out, I forget that that's what we're doing.
- 49:46That's why I keep us on track. OK.
- 49:48Yeah, we we have our strong suits.
- 49:50OK, next question. Yeah.
- 49:53What do you find the most challenging about being a dog
- 49:55trainer? OK, you go first.
- 49:59I mean, I would say honestly what we just were talking about
- 50:01because it's still, even though we say we can be really good
- 50:03about protecting our peace, I still put so much weight into
- 50:09how my owners feel working with me.
- 50:11Like I want them to feel supported.
- 50:13I want them to feel empowered and excited to go do the work.
- 50:17And it's easy to be like when the dog goes home, like thinking
- 50:21about it a ton. So I did that.
- 50:24And also just like logistics stuff, the schedule stuff is
- 50:28amazing and terrible at the same time.
- 50:30Like we get to create our own schedule.
- 50:33I don't think that I would. And I've, I've been honest about
- 50:36this like pack plus as full as I do, if this wasn't our, you
- 50:41know, Casey and I's full and come together.
- 50:44So there are some days where I'm like, like right now being back
- 50:47and at it, I'm like, give me another dog.
- 50:49Like I'm fresh, I'm ready to go. But I know that we don't have
- 50:52any like actual days off for a while now.
- 50:56And I know that I'll be getting towards the tail end of that and
- 50:58I'll be like, like I need some time off.
- 51:02So it's that kind of stuff. And we both like, I've gotten so
- 51:04much better about that over the years.
- 51:05Like we take really nice amounts of time.
- 51:07Off and so good at that, yeah. We used to be terrible at it,
- 51:11but it's that because it's like, you know, we don't have PTO, so
- 51:14my brain goes to that kind of stuff.
- 51:15It's like we're not working, we're not making money.
- 51:18But that's also why it's been great to have virtual options
- 51:22and things like that. So I would say for me, that's
- 51:25the most challenging part is like the wanting to be super
- 51:30supportive with owners, but then also protecting peace and just
- 51:32the pull between like tough dogs and then like just the lifestyle
- 51:37of it is it's like a lot on your body and a lot on your brain.
- 51:41Yeah, well yes to all of that one for me, kennel anxiety, hate
- 51:46it, don't like it, don't like working through it.
- 51:49But that doesn't happen with a lot of dogs 'cause I don't take
- 51:51on separation anxiety cases. The other thing recently would
- 51:55be online stuff where like I, my resources lean towards towards E
- 52:00collar training and there's a part of me that really wants to
- 52:04be known as AE collar trainer. I feel like it's niche.
- 52:06It's something I can focus on and really dive into.
- 52:09Like when I first started as a trainer it felt, I know it's not
- 52:14like this, but it really felt like that for me.
- 52:16Then where it was, it felt like a male dominated industry and I
- 52:20wanted to be a female voice. I felt like a lot of dog owners
- 52:24were females. The room I was sitting in at the
- 52:26seminar was all females except one so that really drove me
- 52:30where now I feel like it almost feels as if I'm inviting
- 52:34negativity into my life when I post about E collar stuff and I
- 52:37don't love that. I don't want to get negativity.
- 52:40I want to help owners and share content that is training stuff,
- 52:48mainly E collar again, because I can teach you.
- 52:51I can show how to use food to get a dog to sit, but that's not
- 52:53very exciting to me. So I kind of like sharing about
- 52:57the controversial stuff, but something that an owner can be
- 53:00like, hey, go follow walking dog training.
- 53:02Controversial, but it is. Yes, yeah.
- 53:04And so I feel like recently I've just, it's like a tug and pull
- 53:08where I want to help in that way and, and sell more guides.
- 53:11But I also don't want to wake up to five negative comments and
- 53:16have to filter and block and delete.
- 53:18And I don't want to have conversations on Instagram where
- 53:20I'm trying to talk someone into anything.
- 53:22So yeah. I think the cool thing about
- 53:24like the growth on that is you're like, I just don't even
- 53:26want the negativity. It doesn't make you feel like a
- 53:29reflection at all on like maybe I should reconsider this or like
- 53:34why? No, it's more like I don't have
- 53:36the time. Like if if that's what people is
- 53:40like the biggest part of their day is going to write on your
- 53:43post something negative. It's like have at it.
- 53:47But also now it's annoying that I have to even filter through
- 53:49it. Yeah, well, cuz I there was a
- 53:52big growth spurt, I guess you could say for walking up
- 53:54training on Instagram specifically from my dog diary
- 53:57posts, which is great. It was so fun, but I can't, I
- 54:01don't really want to post those forever.
- 54:03And so I know a lot of people, yeah, a lot of people came for
- 54:06those. And just yesterday when I was
- 54:08sharing about the E collar in a reel or something and someone
- 54:11was like, oh, I'm so disappointed.
- 54:13Your Instagram page was like a a safe space for me.
- 54:17And I can't believe that you use it.
- 54:19And right away like no matter how I respond or if I delete and
- 54:22block whatever for my mental health again coming back to that
- 54:25always it still affects me. It's like and I don't like that
- 54:29feeling. It's almost adrenaline inducing
- 54:31where I really try to lean into my grandma hobbies that really
- 54:36like seeing my sprouts in my garden.
- 54:37I wish you could see them right now.
- 54:39There's so many sprouts which makes me so happy.
- 54:42I literally just want to lean into my bake and do nothing
- 54:45personality. Did we mention that that was?
- 54:47On the first one. OK, so that I've been struggling
- 54:51with that. I also love content, so much
- 54:53creating but I've been like I don't.
- 54:57I know it's, it's so tough too because that kind of stuff is
- 55:00like the most, you know, challenging part of being a dog
- 55:03trainer is like, I don't think at least for us like what that
- 55:07looks like changes too. Totally.
- 55:09And I think that that's like, I would love to like I'm kind of
- 55:12in the space where I love working with dogs still, but I
- 55:16wish we could do trainer news all the time.
- 55:18And like that was the main part of our business like that.
- 55:22It's something where it's like, I think it's because of the
- 55:25positivity that comes from it and the like electric energy in
- 55:29the room, the emotion that like that.
- 55:31It's like it's such a spot for everyone that I'm like, it's
- 55:34intoxicating in the best way. Like that's the kind of drunk I
- 55:38want to feel. That's the kind of hangover.
- 55:40It's like, my gosh, that was a long week, but also like so.
- 55:45Inspiring. Motivating.
- 55:46Like the best. So like in a dream world, it'd
- 55:49be like I'll take a dog here and there and like just be doing so
- 55:53many trainer news. Yes, same.
- 55:55Well, it's hard because we, we know what it feels like.
- 55:58It's hard to put that feeling into words.
- 56:01Yeah. So yeah.
- 56:03OK, What is the most rewarding experience as a dog trainer?
- 56:05Well, kind of let's let's kind of pepper through these.
- 56:07Let's keep it on our time that we've been doing.
- 56:09I'll say like a couple of things, like from a business
- 56:13perspective, even though I said it's one of the most
- 56:15challenging, I think one of the most rewardings is genuinely
- 56:17like I get to be like I'm doing a podcast at 8:00 AM with my
- 56:20friend and I'll start the dog training stuff at 9.
- 56:22Like I love that I get to pick how I'm doing things when I'm
- 56:27doing things, what I'm doing. And truly one of the most
- 56:30rewarding is that connection of the owner and dog, even if it's
- 56:35like they go home and there's little like pushy moments and
- 56:38stuff like that, but where the owner is just like, wow, I'm so
- 56:41happy. And but you can tell the dog is
- 56:43so happy. The ones that really feel like
- 56:45the puzzle pieces fit together and they're still going to
- 56:47struggle at home, but you know, things are going to go well.
- 56:49Like there's nothing like it. It's it's the best.
- 56:51I love taking the go home graduation photo, even if after
- 56:55the go home, the little dog was a little bit of AD bag to their
- 56:58owner. It's like everyone's so happy.
- 56:59Like that feeling is pretty Dang cool.
- 57:02Yeah, I'd say all the same, all the above.
- 57:04And then also kind of like I was talking about content in a not
- 57:09so fun way. But I also love having a space
- 57:12where I can help people that I will never meet in person and
- 57:15just reassure them with a graphic with words on it.
- 57:17Like that is wild to me. So I think that's also super
- 57:21fulfilling that I can be creatively inspired and have
- 57:27people that actually want to see what I share, like Wild.
- 57:30And that's like such a great example.
- 57:32If you don't mind me sharing this just because I think it's
- 57:33like, so any trainers listening to this like screenshot these
- 57:37things, save a folder. I know you do this, Bethany, but
- 57:39like I got a message yesterday. I've never worked with this
- 57:41person in person ever. Just have done virtual stuff and
- 57:47like she's just followed me and I got a message.
- 57:50I just want to reach out and say thank you.
- 57:51I recently had scheduled surgery and knew I needed Polish up
- 57:54trainer training prior to the big day.
- 57:57Everyone was so concerned about me handling our three dogs and
- 57:59she listed the breeds, all large dogs on my own.
- 58:03Their concerns were completely unfounded and my pack blew
- 58:06everyone's mind. Off leash potty breaks with E
- 58:08collar backup just in case. Polite greetings, Threshold
- 58:11control. Having well behaved dogs on the
- 58:13daily is great but AS 100% made my recovery process go smoothly.
- 58:17I'm forever grateful for all the information you provide.
- 58:20That's just from a person following me.
- 58:23I've never again. I didn't train her dog.
- 58:24So of course my response back was like, I hope you feel so
- 58:28proud of yourself, not just your dog, because you did that queen.
- 58:31Like that was all you. Did you say that?
- 58:33You did. You did that queen.
- 58:35Oh, I love that. Yeah, I'm like you go off.
- 58:40OK, Yeah, you got to save that. Do you have a gratitude folder
- 58:42or like just? Some random screenshots oh and I
- 58:45do have like if people message me like certain things I have
- 58:48like a highlight that I'll like save it to a highlight on
- 58:51Instagram. But my phone, there's nothing
- 58:53organized about my. OK, yeah, somewhat.
- 58:55OK, so I, I have, OK, I'm trying to be like, I actually don't
- 58:59even know why I said, do you have a gratitude folder?
- 59:01Because I actually have one. There's probably 5 things, but
- 59:04really good. To add them to it.
- 59:06I aspire to Add all of my screenshots to it.
- 59:08Totally. I aspire to do a lot of things
- 59:10on my phone, like organize and, you know, have a just like a
- 59:14birdie folder and a roadie folder and yeah, one day
- 59:17probably. You know, I actually have a
- 59:18birdie and a roadie folder. I think the phone does that
- 59:22though, right? No, I created.
- 59:25It Yeah, it's so cute. I never know when you'll need
- 59:29your friend's dog's picture. It's so true, very true.
- 59:33Any guidance or advice for anyone thinking of becoming a
- 59:35dog trainer? Oh boy.
- 59:38Come to the training. Trainer.
- 59:40Literally like come see us in August.
- 59:43We did. If anyone's listening, we did
- 59:44lower the price a little bit. So go check out on the website.
- 59:48We have a handful of spots left. So OK, that and.
- 59:52Yeah, that that is, I mean seriously like newer trainers,
- 59:56trainers who have not even started their business.
- 59:57On it, don't feel like you need to be like already have LLC and
- 1:00:02you need to have everything in line.
- 1:00:04No, no, honestly, I that's what I would have.
- 1:00:10Well, that's the next question. So any guidance or advice for
- 1:00:13thinking about being a dog trainer?
- 1:00:15So trainer new and then just start sharing content about
- 1:00:20dogs. Yeah, the work with some of like
- 1:00:22your friends or family dogs for free to start just to get your
- 1:00:25hands on dogs. Go volunteer if you need to at a
- 1:00:27shelter, again, just to get your hands on dogs, making sure you
- 1:00:30enjoy that. Remember, this is not a dog
- 1:00:33business. This is a human business.
- 1:00:35That's one thing that I think time and time again that I see
- 1:00:37people are like, I work with dogs because I hate people.
- 1:00:40Not the career for you then definitely if you want to work
- 1:00:44with dogs and maybe go work for a trainer and you know, take out
- 1:00:47the working with owners owners at all.
- 1:00:50But Can you imagine if someone like put that on their website?
- 1:00:53Like I hate people, but I love dogs.
- 1:00:56Hire me, I'll. Work with you.
- 1:01:00I would be like, no, like this is going to be an unsolved
- 1:01:04mysteries case on. A crime podcast sound on their
- 1:01:08website if this is possible should be axe murderer music.
- 1:01:11No DDDDDDDD. If you were to start over, what
- 1:01:20would you do differently or do again?
- 1:01:23I would listen to my intuition whenever, but also you don't
- 1:01:26really know that OK. My biggest thing for new
- 1:01:29trainers is I wish I would have embraced my newness.
- 1:01:32I wanted to get to experience as soon as possible.
- 1:01:36I don't. Know I'm an expert.
- 1:01:37As quick as possible. What is the book where it's
- 1:01:4010,000 hours you become an expert it's I'll have to tell
- 1:01:45you that later. Whatever it is, but I read that
- 1:01:47book but. I go, she'll forget.
- 1:01:49I will. She's not gonna tell.
- 1:01:51You but my intention is good. It's I've played this to Casey
- 1:01:53before. Sometimes we say things and I'm
- 1:01:55like, but my intention is very good.
- 1:01:57OK, so but I was like, I was remember I was reading the
- 1:02:00bathroom and I was like, oh fuck.
- 1:02:01Like I, I can't I have 10,000 hours already.
- 1:02:04Like I was thinking that that would make me an expert.
- 1:02:06And I wish I would have embraced my newness more because I think
- 1:02:09owners just need help and I think excitement can sometimes
- 1:02:15trump experience. See, that's so funny.
- 1:02:18I don't feel like I struggled with that much.
- 1:02:22No. And I think it was just because,
- 1:02:23honestly, I'm not going to lie, I felt like a pretty good dog
- 1:02:26handler after having Roadie is my first dog really, because I'm
- 1:02:30like his reactivity back in the day.
- 1:02:34I, he's still top five most reactive dog ever.
- 1:02:38And then it was like so hard because he wasn't confident
- 1:02:40about it. Such an insecure.
- 1:02:42So like there were so many things that I'm like, he, he
- 1:02:44made me literally I had to be. So I think that was the stuff
- 1:02:48where it's like I wasn't as concerned about that.
- 1:02:50I was more of like my imposter syndrome of like, I don't have a
- 1:02:53perfect dog that stuff like would really like weigh on me
- 1:02:58and stuff. And I also, I'm not like this at
- 1:03:00all anymore. I struggled with this big time
- 1:03:03throughout everything. I, I was not in like growing up,
- 1:03:06I was not the popular kid. I always like had popular
- 1:03:08friends. I was good at some things, but I
- 1:03:11was never the best at anything. So like I had so much like
- 1:03:16personal like like conflict with myself when I was younger that
- 1:03:22like I never thought I was good enough at anything and I was
- 1:03:26always kind of like wanting to be.
- 1:03:27I was always looking for validation.
- 1:03:29So even when I first started, like I wanted validation from
- 1:03:32like the popular trainers, I wanted to be liked.
- 1:03:36I wanted to. Now I don't give up because
- 1:03:39like, it's just that never got me anywhere except for like
- 1:03:43feeling more like bad about myself.
- 1:03:47So that kind of stuff is, I feel like that can be so toxic is,
- 1:03:51you know, looking for validation outside of like yourself.
- 1:03:54And it's, it is great to have a pat on the back and being told
- 1:03:57you're doing a good job. But like, I would seek it out.
- 1:04:00Like, I'd be like, I hope the person notices my thing.
- 1:04:03I hope like, yeah, that kind of stuff I think I would really try
- 1:04:07to work on. But I also don't think I'd be as
- 1:04:10like confident and like proud of the person I've become today if
- 1:04:14I wasn't like attention seeking. Like I truly struggled with that
- 1:04:20in all aspects of my life. And now I don't.
- 1:04:24And I feel like it just has made me a much healthier person
- 1:04:28today. So when you say like, what would
- 1:04:30you do the same, which you would do different?
- 1:04:31I'm sure there's different choices I would make now just
- 1:04:34from experience. But I don't know that I would
- 1:04:36change much because I really like the path that has brought
- 1:04:39me to personally. The only thing that I would have
- 1:04:42done, and you were much better about this than I was, Bethany,
- 1:04:44is I took too long to invest in myself.
- 1:04:47Like there were things that I was like, Oh, well, like maybe
- 1:04:50one day I'll go to that. Or maybe when it's like now if
- 1:04:54it was something that's like, I'm gonna make it happen.
- 1:04:56Like I'm gonna work to make sure I can go to it.
- 1:04:58I'm gonna you know, think of every sort of investment as
- 1:05:01investment into myself and into my business and not as like a,
- 1:05:05well, can I afford that, which I kind of stayed in that, you
- 1:05:09know, again, I was, you know, so young when I started.
- 1:05:12So it makes you feel kind of especially the generation that
- 1:05:15we both kind of came from is like, you go to college, you
- 1:05:18yeah, get married, you have kids, you do this, you save for
- 1:05:21your 401K. And I aligned with all of that
- 1:05:25to an extent, but also didn't align with like any of that.
- 1:05:28Yeah, well, I think like with experience and what you're
- 1:05:31talking about is so important to note because, and I remember
- 1:05:35reaching out to a local trainer who did not offer a shadow
- 1:05:38program. And I was so bummed.
- 1:05:40And I thought she would be my answer to like getting better.
- 1:05:43And I remember I would message her every now and then on
- 1:05:46Instagram, like, hey, I'm really struggling with this dog.
- 1:05:50Can you give me an answer, basically.
- 1:05:51But I think there's also so much power.
- 1:05:54And I know it sucks in the moment when you feel like you
- 1:05:56just want all the answers. But we would not be where we are
- 1:05:59right now. We would not have the confidence
- 1:06:00we have. We would not be leading a
- 1:06:02seminar together for trainers if we didn't have all the missteps
- 1:06:05with owners that we've worked with, all the stories that now
- 1:06:07we can tell there's I mean, it's kind of cool now when you can
- 1:06:12tell stories about whoa, this shit really hit the fan with
- 1:06:15this owner and dog. Now, I would do things
- 1:06:17differently, but you also, I think leaning into experience
- 1:06:21and going into it as a new trainer with the mindset of, OK,
- 1:06:26there's going to be crappy moments, but everything is going
- 1:06:28to teach me something new. And I think not always trying to
- 1:06:31like, avoid the mistakes from happening and being so like
- 1:06:35paralyzed by that fear, I think could be a strength.
- 1:06:39I kind of wish I would have thought of it that way.
- 1:06:40I was just always trying to jump three steps ahead.
- 1:06:44So that's why I guess it'd be more like mindset, like just
- 1:06:46being aware of that. Totally.
- 1:06:48Yeah, I love that. Those are all really good
- 1:06:50questions. The last four questions were all
- 1:06:51from the same person. So my guess is she must be
- 1:06:55trying to think on if she wants to dabble into being a dog
- 1:06:57trainer. You're asking, Well, First off,
- 1:06:59just to give you a little bit of kudos depending on where you are
- 1:07:01in your journey, you're asking such great questions and asking
- 1:07:06all those questions. The thing I just want to push
- 1:07:08you a little bit is when you are thinking like all of these
- 1:07:13questions you have, there's a reason you have them.
- 1:07:15So maybe trust your gut on why you're asking them.
- 1:07:18Like don't convince yourself why you're not capable of it.
- 1:07:23That's one thing. I would just make sure that like
- 1:07:26you, ask the questions, take the answers and apply something with
- 1:07:28them. Yeah, take action today.
- 1:07:30Do something. Do something.
- 1:07:32And sign up for the trainer and you.
- 1:07:34Clearly, I mean, that's a that's.
- 1:07:36Especially traders who have all these questions, which I or
- 1:07:39people who do the trainer and you week is basically ask.
- 1:07:42I mean there's so many moments where everyone's asking
- 1:07:44questions, giving feedback. Everyone is just taking stuff
- 1:07:49that other trainers say it's. Like none of them are the same.
- 1:07:51That's the thing that's so cool. Obviously for us, none of them
- 1:07:53are even the same for the person because you know, obviously a
- 1:07:56lot of people are just coming once.
- 1:07:57But that's I think the most exciting part too is like we
- 1:08:00have the same booklet which we adjust every single time, but it
- 1:08:04is never the same same like concept and same kind of like
- 1:08:08what comes from it is like the community, community, community.
- 1:08:12But that's the thing that is so fun for me is like we it's a
- 1:08:16gamble when people are coming in.
- 1:08:18We know it's gonna be amazing, but it's like, what are what's
- 1:08:21this crew going to care the most about?
- 1:08:22What's this one going to be like?
- 1:08:23It's really fun. Well.
- 1:08:25That's also one last thing I'll say about if when I was a newer
- 1:08:29trainer, what I would have leaned into even more.
- 1:08:31It's community and that's hard to find, but I remember when I
- 1:08:34first met some trainers through the seminar I went to before I
- 1:08:38met you at the seminar in person.
- 1:08:41It changed everything for me because if you have other
- 1:08:44trainers to lean on who can support you, who you can ask
- 1:08:47questions like I, that's what I was craving the most when I went
- 1:08:51to one of those was that feeling of having other people that get
- 1:08:55it, that can support me, that I can reach out like it's just
- 1:08:59that is invaluable. Is that the word?
- 1:09:02Priceless, yeah. Priceless.
- 1:09:03OK, so yeah, it's community is just such a important piece of
- 1:09:08the puzzle, so. Yeah, I totally agree and.
- 1:09:10We're going to say this forever. It is our seminar.
- 1:09:12So hello, of course we're going to like want you to come.
- 1:09:15But also we believe very strongly in it.
- 1:09:17And people keep telling us that like this people just like we're
- 1:09:19making these things up. Literally every single person
- 1:09:22that comes is like Oh my God. Like A, why didn't I do this
- 1:09:26sooner? And B.
- 1:09:26Also this is the best week of my life and I just left with my new
- 1:09:29best friends. Yes.
- 1:09:31Yeah, but well, we have some sunshine today.
- 1:09:34I'm happy about that. And Mandy's back today, so she
- 1:09:38just got here. So I'm going to go start working
- 1:09:41with my crew for the day. What do you have on the docket
- 1:09:43for yours? Work with Thor yeah one dog
- 1:09:47right now, which is kind of nice but check on my sprouts bape do
- 1:09:51nothing no, I'm just. Kidding.
- 1:09:52How's Charlie? So much better.
- 1:09:55Good. Yeah.
- 1:09:56I cannot believe we almost didn't have him.
- 1:09:58Like the thought of that is so bizarre because he's walking
- 1:10:00around being normal is. He still on the meds.
- 1:10:02Yeah, we upped it a little bit yesterday.
- 1:10:05He stopped taking the capsule which is more tranquilizer ish.
- 1:10:10OK. Yeah.
- 1:10:11So yeah, yeah, yeah, I think you guys were like, obviously it's
- 1:10:15whatever you guys. But like the tranquilizer one,
- 1:10:17that's tough because it's like literally they're walking
- 1:10:19around. Like that's not the goal either
- 1:10:21to be like, no, we. Don't want him to be comatose
- 1:10:25all day, no. So yeah, he started begging for
- 1:10:28food yesterday and I was. Like, good.
- 1:10:30Yep, It's so good. OK, well, I'm gonna let you go.
- 1:10:35You know what I mean? Yeah.
- 1:10:37See, like, I don't know. We're just.
- 1:10:38Gonna work. What does it We just like say
- 1:10:40it. We just.
- 1:10:41That doesn't have to do anything, does it?
- 1:10:43I don't know. See, this is where I struggle
- 1:10:44with saying it. You know what I mean?
- 1:10:45Can you imagine? OK.
- 1:10:46OK either way. I didn't ask about your animals.
- 1:10:49They're OK everyone's. Good.
- 1:10:51Everyone's good. Rhody decided he doesn't like
- 1:10:53his food anymore after. Yeah, so now we're making
- 1:10:57homemade food and currently he's enjoying it.
- 1:10:59We literally saw that food that we got at the farmers market he
- 1:11:04loved. So I tried to order some online.
- 1:11:07Then she like my order got accepted, but I got an e-mail
- 1:11:11saying that like they can't ship to Wisconsin because they just
- 1:11:14don't have the, they're not able to keep it cool or something.
- 1:11:17I don't know. So I literally was like, OK, he
- 1:11:21loves his food. I'm going to get the
- 1:11:24ingredients. And I already know like the
- 1:11:27things he can't have, things he can have, would be sensitive to
- 1:11:29pancreas. He can't have high fat because
- 1:11:31blah, blah, blah. And now we're making his own,
- 1:11:33his food, and he's eating three to four times a day versus two
- 1:11:37big meals. We're just doing like small.
- 1:11:40This is such like, I would do it again in a heartbeat.
- 1:11:43But like the mental whiplash that this has put us through in
- 1:11:48the last couple of years is wild.
- 1:11:51But we love our freaking dogs. So it's like, what are we gonna
- 1:11:56do? Just like, let them get even
- 1:11:58more depleted than he already looks.
- 1:12:00But he's like kind of begging for his food, which is great.
- 1:12:04Anytime he acts hungry, we're feeding him is what we're doing
- 1:12:06right now. Yeah.
- 1:12:07So yeah, so. And it's actually kind of nice.
- 1:12:10This actually might end up saving US money because his food
- 1:12:12that we've been ordering is so expensive.
- 1:12:14And of course, a new shipment just came in.
- 1:12:16But Bertie eats anything and everything.
- 1:12:18So honestly, I think that that's going to be her longevity is her
- 1:12:22diet changes all the time, which is actually like really good for
- 1:12:25a dog to have the variation. So she's eating something new
- 1:12:30all the time because it's like, oh, Rhody won't eat that now.
- 1:12:32OK, right here you go, bird. So she's loving it.
- 1:12:35Oh. My gosh, Can you imagine if you
- 1:12:37started selling dog food? I knew you were going to say
- 1:12:40that. And also Casey literally said
- 1:12:41that this morning. And like you too.
- 1:12:44And I go, OK, Jeremy Clarkson, like we're going to have to go
- 1:12:47through testing to make sure that like how long with the
- 1:12:49shelf life? I'm like, let's just get our dog
- 1:12:53eating and then let's talk about selling dog food, OK, All right,
- 1:12:57We. Have we have a lot of great
- 1:12:58ideas? You guys have a lot of great
- 1:13:00ideas. We're driving to our workout the
- 1:13:01other day and Casey has all these great video ideas for
- 1:13:05canine, which I love. But I kind of sit there and I
- 1:13:08try not to be like the, you know.
- 1:13:12But. OK.
- 1:13:15And I'm going to like wait till you execute it.
- 1:13:17Like no, still waiting to get that list did.
- 1:13:21He tell you how I texted him with an idea for a
- 1:13:23collaboration. Yes, and he was really excited
- 1:13:26about it. He showed me the video that he
- 1:13:28made for you, which was amazing. I love it so much.
- 1:13:30Yeah, yeah. I can't.
- 1:13:31Wait to get on my site yeah but I was like I literally just
- 1:13:35texted him as soon as I thought of it.
- 1:13:37I don't even love the ideas about plan it.
- 1:13:39There's no. Plan, we'll see who's going to
- 1:13:40execute it. See, that's the thing though is
- 1:13:42like when you come up with ideas and you're like, we're going to
- 1:13:44do it. You execute it like when you
- 1:13:46start doing it for sure. It might take a while, like when
- 1:13:49I first texted you about doing a podcast.
- 1:13:51That was months ago. But here we are.
- 1:13:53This is the defined timing right now.
- 1:13:55Yeah, this is what it's meant to be.
- 1:13:56So dog food might be on the list.
- 1:13:58Maybe 15 years now. Who knows?
- 1:14:00I don't know. I'm.
- 1:14:00Going to be so over any sort of dog food discussion.
- 1:14:04Love my dog to death but when he makes his way to a different
- 1:14:10space and my life ends, I'm talking about it lightly.
- 1:14:15Like I'd be totally fine with it.
- 1:14:17No, like I'll literally need to be like putting an insane
- 1:14:20asylum. Yeah.
- 1:14:21But I will probably be like kibble's the best, which I'm
- 1:14:26not. I'm not like anti kibble.
- 1:14:29I'm just like he can't eat it. So it's like I, I don't want to
- 1:14:33talk about any sort of like. Just takes up so much of your
- 1:14:36conversation, I know. Yeah, so then I'm just like, so
- 1:14:39uninterested when anyone wants to talk about dog food at this
- 1:14:41point. So the idea of what if, what if
- 1:14:44we sell some of this dog food? It's like no, no, no I.
- 1:14:47Just no, No I don't. Want to even think about that?
- 1:14:49Yeah, and. I don't want to like have
- 1:14:50someone be like, I don't think my dog likes it.
- 1:14:52I don't care. That's literally what my
- 1:14:55customer service would be. Not my problem.
- 1:14:58Did you know how many types of food I had to try with my dog?
- 1:15:00Get it together. That is actually a great
- 1:15:03marketing idea. You would just do the opposite
- 1:15:05of what everyone else. Does I don't freaking care?
- 1:15:07Oh. My your dog doesn't I.
- 1:15:09Think I'd be good at that. Too bad.
- 1:15:11I think you would be great. I think you could put on your
- 1:15:13after I have. To say don't care, don't care.
- 1:15:16That's your slogan. Don't care.
- 1:15:19Hashtag don't care. I mean, I do care a lot, but
- 1:15:22also I really don't freaking. Care.
- 1:15:24How would that be to just lean into that?
- 1:15:27I don't care. Oh my gosh, I imagine too me
- 1:15:33too. Okay, number one, we need to
- 1:15:36come up with something, a product we can sell where we can
- 1:15:38just lean into this because now I want to tag team I want.
- 1:15:40To be Well someone did ask us and I didn't answer this
- 1:15:43question. Nothing wrong about your
- 1:15:45question, I just forgot to read it was Have you all thought
- 1:15:48about creating a dog March together?
- 1:15:51I need more hats and caps. My mind immediately goes to I've
- 1:15:54got thousands of shirts on stocks but I'm like go buy
- 1:15:57those. You buy those friggin shirts?
- 1:16:02But whenever I hear someone fucking say in a comment, put
- 1:16:05this on a shirt and I'm like, where were you when I was
- 1:16:07selling a shirt? Like where were you when I was
- 1:16:09selling? I had.
- 1:16:10Thousands of comments of give me like don't touch my dog shirts
- 1:16:13and I have thousands in inventory.
- 1:16:15Wait did you go to each comment and say hey we have these
- 1:16:18available now? No.
- 1:16:20OK, so you might want to do that.
- 1:16:22I did that with the dog diary calendar.
- 1:16:24I'm and I'm being dramatic like we've sold a lot.
- 1:16:26I probably over committed on the ordering, but it was that's why
- 1:16:30you don't you want to like get the price down to be able to
- 1:16:32sell them so people can actually purchase them.
- 1:16:34And so now I'm like, my whole dresser in my basement is full
- 1:16:37of dog. Foods well, OK, so let's let's
- 1:16:41let's start sharing about them first.
- 1:16:43You haven't you need to share again, I think OK, so can you I
- 1:16:49can spell I can share about them too.
- 1:16:51But that's the thing about selling merchandise or like
- 1:16:53apparel you like. I don't.
- 1:16:56Care. You want to ensure it says don't
- 1:17:02pet, don't pet my. Dog, I don't care.
- 1:17:04I don't care. I have one.
- 1:17:05But if you, if you do want some Lincoln bio.
- 1:17:10Oh, by the way, Casey was saying that he'd be more than happy to
- 1:17:14make reels out of our out of our podcast.
- 1:17:17Because I asked Molly to do that.
- 1:17:19Oh, you did. OK, yeah, but if he wants to,
- 1:17:22wonderful. The thing about it is he'll just
- 1:17:25need to get access from you for the videos.
- 1:17:28You asked her to make reels or put them on the YouTube.
- 1:17:31Oh, what did you say, Reels? Oh, I got it like blacked out.
- 1:17:34I forgot what you just said. I got so excited for no reason.
- 1:17:37Obviously I asked her to do where it's like reel of clips
- 1:17:42from this. Yeah, to share on Instagram to
- 1:17:44be like, hey, clip. Because on Riverside when it
- 1:17:47does the magic clips, they are the dumbest things ever.
- 1:17:50It's like terrible and I almost get nauseous like trying to
- 1:17:55figure out like how do I? Like hours of content.
- 1:17:59Well, that's so, I think. He did say to me is he was like
- 1:18:02you guys would just have to like tell me a part that like you
- 1:18:04like and I'm like, no, I can't do that.
- 1:18:05Like I, we like it all and also like I I forget what we talked
- 1:18:10about 3 minutes ago and. I don't want to rehash it, I
- 1:18:12don't care. I don't care.
- 1:18:20It's be like our what is it? I'm not a huge Taylor Swift
- 1:18:23person. I like her music.
- 1:18:24I'm not a Swifty. But the Easter eggs, can that be
- 1:18:27our Easter egg? Like, I don't care.
- 1:18:28So like anytime we say it, someone who listens to the pod
- 1:18:31will. Be they don't know, you know,
- 1:18:33they're like, they don't care. Either.
- 1:18:34Literally, we all don't care. We don't care, OK?
- 1:18:37So if anyone listens to this episode, do us a favor, put it
- 1:18:42on your like, share it in your stories and just write.
- 1:18:44I don't care and no one will know what you're talking about
- 1:18:47except for we will, so tag we. Will Yeah, we will.
- 1:18:49Letting people think that we don't care about this podcast.
- 1:18:52Who cares? I don't care.
- 1:18:53I don't care. How is that?
- 1:18:57I feel like I could I, I could do so many things today and I
- 1:19:01don't care. I don't care either.
- 1:19:03Oh fuck that's just great. This makes me want to class.
- 1:19:07OK I need a new laptop. Literally this is telling me my
- 1:19:09thing's about to die. Was that 100% when we started?
- 1:19:11OK, this has been such a great conversation.
- 1:19:13I don't care if like, people don't like it.
- 1:19:16I don't care. OK?
- 1:19:16This is how we should end it, OK?
- 1:19:18I don't care. All right, I don't care.
- 1:19:20Love you. Love you.
- 1:19:21Bye.
