Latest / The Chuck ToddCast / Special Episode - Another ICE Shooting In Minneapolis Raises Serious Questions
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: They're happy Saturday. I guess it's tough to say a
- 0:05Speaker 1: happy Saturday. I'm jumping on and most of you who
- 0:08Speaker 1: follow me and followed my career know that I'm not
- 0:10Speaker 1: one to quick to jump on stuff. I mean, I
- 0:12Speaker 1: certainly spent enough time covering breaking news in my life
- 0:16Speaker 1: to know that you want to wait as long as possible,
- 0:22Speaker 1: because you know that the first reports of information are
- 0:26Speaker 1: always the trickiest times. But you can't unsee what you
- 0:31Speaker 1: saw this morning in Minneapolis, and it is. The shooting
- 0:38Speaker 1: is all over social media, and I understand if some
- 0:42Speaker 1: of you are still hesitant to believe everything you see
- 0:44Speaker 1: on social media, especially if you're seeing it on X Right.
- 0:47Speaker 1: This is not exactly a platform that cares about truth.
- 0:51Speaker 1: The owner certainly doesn't, so I understand the hesitancy. But
- 0:57Speaker 1: there is you know, we've now got the Associated Press,
- 1:00Speaker 1: We've got plenty of serious journalists. Start tribute Associated Press,
- 1:03Speaker 1: Washing Post, nearer across the board, Fox News, you name it.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Confirming the basics of the story that another person was
- 1:11Speaker 1: killed in Minneapolis by federal agents. Doesn't appear this person
- 1:17Speaker 1: was anything other than potentially a protester who may have
- 1:21Speaker 1: been maybe they were filming, maybe they were questioning, but
- 1:27Speaker 1: the video is quite disturbing because they appeared to have
- 1:29Speaker 1: this individual subdued. They back away, and then he gets
- 1:33Speaker 1: killed and they start shooting. And so immediately the first
- 1:39Speaker 1: thing you think of is, okay, what if he it's
- 1:42Speaker 1: you know, be very careful here, and this is where
- 1:44Speaker 1: you have to listen to everything that is said very
- 1:49Speaker 1: carefully by the government here, by the FEDS. So DHS
- 1:52Speaker 1: has said this gentleman was armed. Notice what they did
- 1:56Speaker 1: not say. They did not say he was brandishing it.
- 1:58Speaker 1: They did not say he had pulled his wet And
- 2:01Speaker 1: I double checked the law in Minnesota they have you
- 2:03Speaker 1: can with a permit, and we don't know any of
- 2:06Speaker 1: these facts yet. And this is why it is always
- 2:09Speaker 1: important to know some of these technical facts because we
- 2:12Speaker 1: know they'll be used later, exploited or weaponized conveniently or
- 2:18Speaker 1: inconveniently by those with a political agenda. But the law
- 2:22Speaker 1: in Minnesota, with a permit, you can be you can
- 2:26Speaker 1: conceal and carry, you can open carry. Now there's you know,
- 2:31Speaker 1: you have to get training and you have to have
- 2:32Speaker 1: a permit, and you have to go through a little
- 2:34Speaker 1: bit of a procedure to do that. But and this
- 2:36Speaker 1: is a state that if other states have similar permitting processes,
- 2:41Speaker 1: there's reciprocity. So it's very possible this person was legally
- 2:46Speaker 1: carrying a weapon. We don't know for sure, we don't
- 2:49Speaker 1: know the circumstances. But the first question that every reporter
- 2:54Speaker 1: should have for DHS is if they knew when did
- 2:59Speaker 1: Number one is when did DHS know this person was
- 3:02Speaker 1: armed before the altercation or after he was shot? Right?
- 3:09Speaker 1: We don't have those details, but these incredibly important details. Right.
- 3:12Speaker 1: The second thing is when they shot him, did he
- 3:18Speaker 1: where were his hands? And where was this weapon? Obviously,
- 3:21Speaker 1: DHS's credibility is quite low with a giant share of
- 3:28Speaker 1: the country, giant share of the press score, because this
- 3:31Speaker 1: is not a press office that is trying to give
- 3:35Speaker 1: all the facts. This is a press office that is
- 3:38Speaker 1: having to abide by political talking points. It's we know that,
- 3:43Speaker 1: that's what it is. The reports coming from the Minneapolis
- 3:50Speaker 1: Police Department that DHS tried to keep local law enforcement away,
- 3:55Speaker 1: and the fact that they didn't, I think is why
- 3:57Speaker 1: you've seen so little spinning by DHS. Right with Renee Good,
- 4:01Speaker 1: you saw immediate spinning because they were they controlled the scene.
- 4:05Speaker 1: In this case, it's clear they did not necessarily have
- 4:07Speaker 1: one hundred percent control of the crime scene, which means
- 4:10Speaker 1: the likelihood of at least getting a better version of
- 4:14Speaker 1: the story, meaning a more truthful version of the story,
- 4:17Speaker 1: is much higher than if DHS was in charge of
- 4:21Speaker 1: this crime scene. The second question that's got to be
- 4:25Speaker 1: asked right before the specific firearm issue, is when they
- 4:31Speaker 1: were beating him to when they were beating him up,
- 4:35Speaker 1: and they were I mean, the video shows that they
- 4:37Speaker 1: were just beating this guy up. Why did they back away?
- 4:43Speaker 1: Did they think they had subdued him? If they chose
- 4:46Speaker 1: to shoot him, they obviously thought he was still a threat.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Why didn't they cuff him? Why didn't they detain him?
- 4:52Speaker 1: If this person was a threat. There have been reports
- 4:58Speaker 1: that other eyewitnesses were immediately detained by ice. Obviously we
- 5:06Speaker 1: need This is why there needs to be neutral investigations
- 5:10Speaker 1: of this. Right the FBI is not a trustworthy entity
- 5:13Speaker 1: right now under the political leadership of Cash Betel. Anything
- 5:18Speaker 1: that is under the thumb of the Trump administration, you
- 5:20Speaker 1: cannot trust because they are going to have a narrative.
- 5:23Speaker 1: This is what they're going to do. I understand if
- 5:27Speaker 1: some of you politically aren't going to trust Governor Tim
- 5:29Speaker 1: Walls and his team or Keith Ellison. Okay, fine, then
- 5:34Speaker 1: let's bring in neutral arbiters here. There's plenty of folks
- 5:38Speaker 1: to come in. You want to bring in somebody from
- 5:39Speaker 1: the NYPD, you want to bring in a third party
- 5:43Speaker 1: law enforcement agency from around the country. But the bottom
- 5:46Speaker 1: line is you can't. We can't trust our federal government's
- 5:49Speaker 1: the That's what's shaken me this morning is that ultimately,
- 5:56Speaker 1: right as somebody who's not keen on quickly jumping on
- 5:59Speaker 1: these things and writing this the you know, when you're
- 6:03Speaker 1: in this sort of viral moment because of how much
- 6:06Speaker 1: misinformation and intentional misinformation is being thrown into this. But
- 6:11Speaker 1: the bottom line is, we can't trust the people that
- 6:15Speaker 1: are in charge of upholding the constitution. And if this
- 6:22Speaker 1: is the place we're at, then it doesn't We're sort
- 6:26Speaker 1: of this is lost. Like politically, the White House is
- 6:29Speaker 1: starting to discover this is not very popular. If you
- 6:32Speaker 1: look every way you ask questions about the behavior of Ice,
- 6:37Speaker 1: it's clear these guys were not trained. Six months of
- 6:40Speaker 1: training was squeezed down to six weeks. I've ranked it
- 6:42Speaker 1: about this before. But they're recruiting. Videos and advertisements were grotesque,
- 6:48Speaker 1: and we're looking for people who wanted to push the
- 6:51Speaker 1: envelope on law enforcement violence rather than being trained at
- 6:57Speaker 1: being enforcing the law and being de escalatory and only
- 7:02Speaker 1: using violence when violence was being committed against them. The
- 7:07Speaker 1: grotesque policing behavior by ICE is why there is so
- 7:13Speaker 1: much distrust out there and why this is across the
- 7:15Speaker 1: board beyond apparently a small subset of Americans who are bloodthirsty.
- 7:21Speaker 1: And the real unfortunate aspect of this is the way
- 7:26Speaker 1: DHS recruited ICE agents was using bloodthirsty rhetoric and so
- 7:33Speaker 1: guess what you're gonna get A certain those gentlemen that
- 7:37Speaker 1: were beating up this individual did not look like I
- 7:44Speaker 1: hesitate to say this because we've seen examples of a
- 7:47Speaker 1: lot of unfortunately over decades, we've seen misbehaving cops before,
- 7:51Speaker 1: and that you can get a mob mentality even among
- 7:54Speaker 1: police officers, so it's not as if it's out of
- 7:57Speaker 1: the realm in any enforcement agency anything like that, And
- 8:05Speaker 1: under normal circumstances, there'd been a federal investigation into the
- 8:09Speaker 1: behavior of a local set of police officers behaving the
- 8:13Speaker 1: way I did. Back It's a frequent thing this Justice Department.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Before this era of the Justice Department, this was a
- 8:21Speaker 1: frequent thing. There would be sort of you know, there
- 8:24Speaker 1: was a division that's essentially in charge of doing this.
- 8:28Speaker 1: This is clearly necessary here. But the bigger problem is
- 8:32Speaker 1: this has been the entire operation in Minneapolis is designed
- 8:39Speaker 1: to create a confrontation. And ultimately this is the problem.
- 8:43Speaker 1: This is why this is on the Trump administration. They've
- 8:49Speaker 1: got to back off because they have chosen to put
- 8:53Speaker 1: our fellow Americans in harm's way with this intentional, politicized policy.
- 8:59Speaker 1: This is not Minneapolis is not some hotbed for criminal
- 9:04Speaker 1: undocumented immigrant activity. I know what's being weaponized and manufactured
- 9:10Speaker 1: on the right. Are there bad apples who are ripping
- 9:13Speaker 1: off the government? Yeah, and they're Americans. Americans rip off
- 9:17Speaker 1: government left and right all over the country. Donald Trump
- 9:20Speaker 1: keeps pardoning a bunch of them. If you want to,
- 9:22Speaker 1: if you're really outraged by what's happening in Minneapolis, you
- 9:25Speaker 1: must be really pissed off at the President for his
- 9:28Speaker 1: disregard of the law. Because anybody else that is ripped
- 9:32Speaker 1: off the federal government, if they've donated enough money to
- 9:35Speaker 1: Donald Trump, they get pardoned, but if they're in a
- 9:38Speaker 1: blue state, they get attacked. So politically, this is an
- 9:49Speaker 1: absolute disaster, and there's only one. You know, they know
- 9:55Speaker 1: it's a disaster because you saw jd. Vance behave in
- 9:59Speaker 1: person quite differently than he behaves in social media when
- 10:04Speaker 1: it comes to what's been happening in Minneapolis. He was
- 10:08Speaker 1: downright almost responsible in his behavior when he went to
- 10:11Speaker 1: Minneapolis earlier this week and defending the policy but tiptoeing
- 10:20Speaker 1: it at least acknowledging that there could be things done better. Well,
- 10:25Speaker 1: guess what, whatever tiny bit of progress he might have
- 10:29Speaker 1: weigh just got wiped away by the ill trained DHS
- 10:34Speaker 1: ICE officers. These are untrained thugs attacking Americans, bottom line,
- 10:46Speaker 1: and they've been directed to go to Minneapolis to make
- 10:49Speaker 1: a political point. This is not if you want to go.
- 10:53Speaker 1: This is not because Minneapolis is somehow more dangerous than
- 10:58Speaker 1: other places where they that there are criminals that are undocumented.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Remember what the promise was, they were only going to
- 11:08Speaker 1: go after hardened criminals. They were not going to go
- 11:14Speaker 1: and now they might sweep up other people they claimed.
- 11:18Speaker 1: But you know it's amazing who they conveniently leave out
- 11:21Speaker 1: any construction owner that donates to the Republican Party in
- 11:26Speaker 1: Texas has somehow gotten off scott free from having ICE
- 11:32Speaker 1: agents raid their workplaces. That hasn't happened. So if you
- 11:38Speaker 1: pay Donald Trump, they'll keep ICE away from you. If
- 11:44Speaker 1: you use undocumented labor. That is what's happened in Texas
- 11:49Speaker 1: and Florida. It's being This is being done for political purposes,
- 11:58Speaker 1: not for security reasons, not for safety. This is a feature,
- 12:03Speaker 1: not a bug. And that's the concern we should all
- 12:05Speaker 1: have with this. Is the violence a bug or a feature?
- 12:13Speaker 1: Do they think they're sending a message. If they do,
- 12:15Speaker 1: they're sending a terrible message. Americans care about their freedom
- 12:21Speaker 1: and care about their rights. This is the Minnesota nice
- 12:25Speaker 1: crowd that's pushing back. I don't want to believe that
- 12:32Speaker 1: they're actually looking for a fight, but it certainly looks
- 12:35Speaker 1: like they are, and they're looking for rationales to escalate.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Hopefully the bad poll numbers and the political risk but
- 12:47Speaker 1: gets them to retreat. That's the only way they're going
- 12:51Speaker 1: to retreat. They're not going to retreat because it's the
- 12:53Speaker 1: right thing to do. They're not going to retreat because
- 12:55Speaker 1: Donald Trump's going to wake up and say you know,
- 12:57Speaker 1: my job as president should be to bring Americans together,
- 13:00Speaker 1: divide them. But he has always pursued a policy of
- 13:05Speaker 1: division first, believing it's good politics. And here's here's this
- 13:10Speaker 1: sad truth. It has been good politics for him. Division
- 13:13Speaker 1: works for him. He's not a uniter. He wouldn't be.
- 13:17Speaker 1: He wouldn't have the credibility to do it if he tried,
- 13:20Speaker 1: which is probably one of his rationales for just going
- 13:24Speaker 1: ahead and pursuing it this way. And there is another
- 13:28Speaker 1: part of this administration that thinks they're Jack Nicholson and
- 13:32Speaker 1: a few good men. You don't want me on that wall,
- 13:35Speaker 1: but you need me on that wall, and that somehow
- 13:39Speaker 1: he thinks, deep down inside, this is what people want.
- 13:43Speaker 1: People wanted the chaos at the southern border to stop,
- 13:47Speaker 1: and Americans want law enforcement to follow the law. And
- 13:51Speaker 1: there is no part of what we saw in video
- 13:54Speaker 1: that indicated these law enforcement officials were trying to prevent violence.
- 14:02Speaker 1: We're trying to de escalate the situation. And then there's
- 14:08Speaker 1: all these snarky comments these guys make, which tells you
- 14:11Speaker 1: that they do not take if they are being trained,
- 14:14Speaker 1: they don't take their training seriously. An Associated Press report
- 14:19Speaker 1: that these officers when they're being yelled at by protesters,
- 14:22Speaker 1: snarkily said boohoo, Yeah it's small, But my god, who
- 14:32Speaker 1: are these thugs? Are these jets? You know, they're they're
- 14:36Speaker 1: not behaving like people who want to live in a
- 14:40Speaker 1: free country. They're on a power trip and they're abusing
- 14:45Speaker 1: Americans via this power trip. Look, it's it's like I said,
- 14:51Speaker 1: I'm not not always comfortable trying to do the jumping
- 14:57Speaker 1: on here and and quick reacting. And at the same time,
- 15:06Speaker 1: I want to make sure my fellow journalistic colleagues realize
- 15:10Speaker 1: what's being told to them and what's not being told
- 15:12Speaker 1: to them, and the very specific questions this administration has
- 15:18Speaker 1: to answer. And if they're not going to answer them,
- 15:20Speaker 1: then you already know the answer. And on this incident,
- 15:24Speaker 1: when did they know he was armed before or after
- 15:28Speaker 1: they started beating him? If they knew he was armed,
- 15:33Speaker 1: why didn't they detain him? Why? Trust me, we all
- 15:38Speaker 1: know they're carrying those those plastic sort of handcuffs they quickly,
- 15:46Speaker 1: you know, can wrap hands around. We know they all
- 15:49Speaker 1: have them. If they wanted to tie his hands, they
- 15:52Speaker 1: could have, So why didn't they do that? When did
- 15:56Speaker 1: they know he had the gun. How they've worded this
- 16:00Speaker 1: indicates they are looking that they searched for pretext to
- 16:03Speaker 1: defend what everybody saw. And if they didn't know he
- 16:08Speaker 1: was armed until after they killed him. And remember, carrying
- 16:16Speaker 1: meets the definition of being armed, but it doesn't mean
- 16:20Speaker 1: you brandished it, and it doesn't mean they knew at
- 16:22Speaker 1: the time he was armed. But let's say they didn't
- 16:28Speaker 1: know he was armed, then it becomes why didn't you
- 16:31Speaker 1: handcuff him if you thought he was a threat, you
- 16:35Speaker 1: were beating him up. You clearly had him subdued. So
- 16:44Speaker 1: this is where the video creates a ton of questions
- 16:50Speaker 1: that they can't be trusted with the correct answer. You'd
- 16:54Speaker 1: need a third party investigation here. And let's see in
- 16:59Speaker 1: an investigation, and I will want to circle people back
- 17:06Speaker 1: to a comparison again because Ruby Ridge is a very
- 17:11Speaker 1: good historical marker here to go back on. And this
- 17:16Speaker 1: is one where the right felt as if the federal
- 17:18Speaker 1: government had gone too far in their attempt to enforce
- 17:22Speaker 1: law shooting a woman holding a baby. And after an investigation,
- 17:28Speaker 1: then a Bill Barr led Justice Department thought, yeah, they
- 17:32Speaker 1: needed to actually do an internal investigation of everybody in
- 17:35Speaker 1: this case and an FBI agent did go to jail
- 17:39Speaker 1: for hiding evidence and destroying evidence. Are you confident that
- 17:44Speaker 1: the FBI could investigate and if they found out an
- 17:48Speaker 1: ICE agent destroyed evidence, that they would still pursue this investigation.
- 17:53Speaker 1: The fact that you can't be one hundred percent confident
- 17:56Speaker 1: that we would get an investigation that's on the up
- 17:59Speaker 1: and up shows you how much in one year's time
- 18:05Speaker 1: this administration has deteriorated the reputation of every law enforcement agency.
- 18:13Speaker 1: I understand right now, if nobody trusts the FBI, I
- 18:16Speaker 1: understand right now, very few people trust ICE. The reason
- 18:20Speaker 1: for that is the behavior of all of these appointed officials. Well,
- 18:29Speaker 1: we'll see if no one Donald Trump, if he's looking
- 18:33Speaker 1: for an exit ramp, if he does get convinced this
- 18:36Speaker 1: is bad politics, then there's an obvious scapegoat who already
- 18:41Speaker 1: isn't very well liked inside that West wing, and it's Christino.
- 18:47Speaker 1: She's on some weird She's gotten some really bad advice,
- 18:51Speaker 1: saying the tougher she behaves, the more absurd Ice behaves
- 18:55Speaker 1: that somehow this is going to help her in a
- 18:57Speaker 1: presidential campaign. Well, it could be that her ambition will
- 19:07Speaker 1: mean she has to take the fall for this terrible
- 19:09Speaker 1: policy that has been directed. Let's remember this is all
- 19:12Speaker 1: coming from the White House. She may be a convenient scapegoat,
- 19:17Speaker 1: and it wouldn't shock me at all if she's the
- 19:19Speaker 1: one that takes the hit for poor leadership of Ice.
- 19:22Speaker 1: If elected Republicans start turning, and that's what I'm wondering,
- 19:28Speaker 1: where are all the libertarians? Where are all the small
- 19:32Speaker 1: government conservatives in elective office? You know what you don't see?
- 19:37Speaker 1: You see about three elected Republicans in the Senate, and
- 19:40Speaker 1: maybe a ten to a dozen defend this policy. Most
- 19:44Speaker 1: don't because this is a federal government over exercising its authority.
- 19:55Speaker 1: And the conservatives I grew up with would have been apoplex. Dick,
- 20:03Speaker 1: some of them are, some of them are drinking Maga Kolt.
- 20:08Speaker 1: I'll see it Monday. M m mmmmmmm mm hmmm mm
- 20:15Speaker 1: hmm
