- 0:45coming up? Come on in my my bouncers need
- 0:51to bounce. Not bounce actually, but just
- 0:53get people in order here all right I love it This is 2 Gill
- 0:58connections podcast alums in a row coming up here Go ahead and
- 1:02introduce yourself I. Am Charles Ryan, Director of
- 1:04Track Appeal at the. San.
- 1:06Jose State, what a storied program.
- 1:08I mean, do you, I know you do because I know you, you realize
- 1:12the kind of gravitas you have of leading such a historic program?
- 1:15Absolutely. It was part of the, you know,
- 1:18part of the appeal. Of taking the job in the 1st
- 1:22place I'm I'm a Bay Area kid yeah.
- 1:23Oh, that's. Right.
- 1:23Yeah. A.
- 1:24A. A chance to, you know, chart a
- 1:26new path of such historical program and try to make the
- 1:30alums proud of what we're trying to produce.
- 1:33Today, Yeah, it it. Goes a long way and I'm having.
- 1:35A lot of. Fun I love it you're doing a
- 1:36great job really really proud of you really proud of you All
- 1:38right so tonight we're you're talking about the NCAA.
- 1:42What's your opinion on and you get to take this any direction
- 1:44you want nil, roster, caps, recruiting etcetera, etcetera.
- 1:49What's your thoughts on all the things going on with the NCAA?
- 1:52My initial. Thoughts.
- 1:55There's a lot of thoughts, feelings and opinions folding
- 1:58around and the fact of the matter is, at this moment we
- 2:00don't know enough. About, yeah.
- 2:03I'm not a person that is naturally resistant to change.
- 2:09I try to embrace it. I try to find, you know,
- 2:11opportunities to to do what we do at a higher level, no matter
- 2:14what the. Circumstances, right?
- 2:16So right now I'm very much in a holding pattern.
- 2:19I want to see, you know, what comes out of the house.
- 2:24Right, right, right. Yeah.
- 2:44The opportunity for 45 scholarships, 35 scholarships
- 2:51that some programs are already in embracing and already reaping
- 2:55the. Benefits of the.
- 2:56Fact of the matter is that reality has, will cause and is
- 3:01causing a Grand Canyon size gap within division.
- 3:05OK. And there's no.
- 3:06Way that. You can.
- 3:08Hasn't there already been? Not like this, OK, More not
- 3:11like. This OK, I'll.
- 3:13Give you an example a year ago in our previous season.
- 3:16Sounds like they produced 7 male all.
- 3:18Americans right in various events, right?
- 3:22That was with the idea that my scholarship budget was 12.6.
- 3:26Right. There's no universe that exists
- 3:29now moving forward where I would have even the 12.6, but everyone
- 3:34at that meet. In theory, if you were fully
- 3:37funded, was it minimum operating off of the 12.6?
- 3:40Right now you're. Telling me.
- 3:41That my reality means I get less and people in in big conferences
- 3:46are going to be at 40. Five, Yeah.
- 3:48It's already hard enough. To I see, Yeah, the gap is
- 3:51going. To be.
- 3:52Yeah, if that was some kind of geography nerd, I'd be able to
- 3:55like whatever is a little smaller than the Grand Canyon
- 3:57and now the Grand Canyon, but a little hole now, a big hole, big
- 3:59change. Yeah.
- 4:00And so like I said, for programs.
- 4:01Like myself. You know, balance is probably
- 4:05going to be out the door. We're going to have to.
- 4:08Be special. At what?
- 4:08Yeah, I wondered about that. And offer.
- 4:10Those opportunities. To young people and.
- 4:13Hopefully. Yeah, You know, I appreciate
- 4:16someone who says that they're someone who's not resistant to
- 4:19change, because that's my style as well.
- 4:22It'll be interesting because there's other people like, like
- 4:24us here amongst our coaching brethren that'll be like this.
- 4:27It'll be interesting to see. I think we'll be strong, but I
- 4:30think we'll be changed. Oh, change.
- 4:32No. Doubt.
- 4:33Yeah, I mean. Cataclysmic change like it's
- 4:36it's not going to look like anything that's.
- 4:38Ever looked like? Right, once all this dust has
- 4:40set. All right, so we're asking
- 4:41everybody, because this will be replayed in a year from now as
- 4:44we're leading into the 2025 convention, give us your
- 4:47prediction. Doesn't have to be NCAA house
- 4:50versus NCAA. It could be we're going to break
- 4:53our 200 meter school record. It could be we'll have nobody on
- 4:57the Olympic team. I don't know.
- 4:58Well, there's no Olympics, but we will have nobody on the
- 5:00Olympic team next year. I'll just take that prediction
- 5:02off to play, but we're going to see if you're right next
- 5:05December I I think. Other than just the NCAA shift,
- 5:10I I think the new world athletic schedule is.
- 5:13Going to make it a lot more. Difficult for NCAA athletes to
- 5:17make those teams. In general, right be.
- 5:19It. Foreign teams or.
- 5:21Americans, yeah. So I.
- 5:23Think something that you could point to in 2025.
- 5:26I think they're going to. See a lot less collegiate making
- 5:29the American. Team Wow, how late USA's.
- 5:31Is yeah versus how? Close it's been.
- 5:34To the end, it's usually just it's the next week, you know,
- 5:36Yeah. It's 2.
- 5:37Months apart now and just just the mechanism of keeping.
- 5:42Kids on campus and allowing them, yeah.
- 5:44Do do programs want to invest that kind of?
- 5:48Time and energy, right? Yeah.
- 5:50That's a good prediction. I like that.
- 5:52Yeah, I like that. That's.
- 5:53That's because that'll be one we'll be able to actually tell
- 5:55like, oh, how many made it in last year?
- 5:57How many made it this year? That's a good prediction.
- 5:59I love that. Chuck, thank you so much, man.
- 6:00You have been a big supporter of the podcast from day one.
- 6:04And so I'm just, I'm just always grateful for you.
- 6:09Thank. You brother, appreciate it very
- 6:10much. Thank you.
- 6:12All right, that's a good prediction, right?
- 6:13I mean, we'll know how many people made it this upcoming
- 6:17year versus last year. So I I like that prediction.
