- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello, friends. Welcome to the Seed Pod for Kids. Thank
- 0:09Speaker 1: you for joining me today as we spend time with
- 0:13Speaker 1: our friend Jesus. Spending time with Jesus is the best
- 0:17Speaker 1: way to start your day. Let's begin our time together,
- 0:21Speaker 1: praising Him. There's another story that goes along with this song,
- 0:28Speaker 1: and I want to share it with you. It was 1864,
- 0:30Speaker 1: almost the end of the Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln
- 0:36Speaker 1: went to a special meeting for an organization called the
- 0:38Speaker 1: Christian Commission. They would gather food and supplies and provide
- 0:42Speaker 1: medical services to soldiers who were fighting in the war.
- 0:46Speaker 1: During this meeting, Charles McCabe told about the time when
- 0:50Speaker 1: he was captured and held in a prisoner of war
- 0:52Speaker 1: camp in Richmond, Virginia. It was a terrible time. The
- 0:56Speaker 1: conditions in that prison camp were horrible, but to keep
- 1:00Speaker 1: his spirits up, he would sing the song, Mine eyes
- 1:03Speaker 1: have seen the glory, and he even taught it to
- 1:06Speaker 1: other prisoners. As he finished his talk, sharing there in
- 1:10Speaker 1: front of everyone that day, he started to sing the song,
- 1:15Speaker 1: and people in the audience, along with the band, joined
- 1:18Speaker 1: in together singing the chorus. The last few notes were
- 1:22Speaker 1: dying away when a big strong voice said, Sing it again!
- 1:25Speaker 1: Do you know who it was? It was none other
- 1:30Speaker 1: than President Abraham Lincoln. So they all sang it again.
- 1:34Speaker 1: And as he sang, it is said that President Lincoln
- 1:37Speaker 1: had tears streaming down his cheeks because he was so
- 1:41Speaker 1: moved by the song. Let's sing this song together.
- 1:55Speaker 2: My life is in the glory of the coming of
- 1:58Speaker 2: the Lord. He is camping at the vintage where the
- 2:02Speaker 2: grapes lie.
- 2:03Speaker 3: He has loosed the fateful lightning of.
- 2:06Speaker 4: His terrible firstborn. His truth is marching on. Glory, glory, hallelujah. Glory, glory, hallelujah.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Glory, glory, hallelujah. His truth is marching on.
- 2:34Speaker 4: Glory, glory, hallelujah.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Glory, glory, hallelujah. Glory, glory, hallelujah.
- 3:07Speaker 4: His truth is marching.
- 3:12Speaker 1: On. Hey boys and girls, welcome back. We're going to
- 3:24Speaker 1: learn about a special story about a blind man today.
- 3:28Speaker 1: But before we get started, let's bow our heads in prayer.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Dear Lord, Thank you so much for your love and
- 3:35Speaker 1: your care, for your wisdom that you want to give
- 3:38Speaker 1: to us. We pray that you will help us today
- 3:40Speaker 1: as we read and study from your word, as we
- 3:43Speaker 1: learn about this special story that Jesus did, a special
- 3:48Speaker 1: miracle that he did for the blind man. We love
- 3:51Speaker 1: you so much. In Jesus' name, amen. The disciples thought
- 3:56Speaker 1: that when someone was sick or if something wrong happened,
- 4:00Speaker 1: it was a punishment from God. Have you ever heard
- 4:03Speaker 1: people say that?
- 4:04Speaker 5: Oh, no.
- 4:05Speaker 1: I slam my finger in the car door. Oh, God
- 4:08Speaker 1: is punishing me for what I did. Many times people
- 4:12Speaker 1: think of God as being mean and vindictive. That's a
- 4:16Speaker 1: big word, isn't it? Basically wanting to get even, to
- 4:19Speaker 1: get back at us. We sin and he wants to
- 4:22Speaker 1: get back at us. But is that what God is like? No,
- 4:26Speaker 1: he's a kind God. He's a loving God. He cares
- 4:30Speaker 1: for us and he doesn't want to see us miserable.
- 4:33Speaker 1: One Sabbath. When the disciples asked Jesus about a man
- 4:37Speaker 1: who had been born blind, what did Jesus say? You see,
- 4:40Speaker 1: Jesus came to this world to help show us and
- 4:44Speaker 1: help us to better understand the Father and how much
- 4:46Speaker 1: he loves us. Let's go to John chapter 9, verses
- 4:50Speaker 1: 1 through 3. Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, chapter 9. Here
- 4:58Speaker 1: we go, John chapter 9, and let's read verse 1, 2,
- 5:02Speaker 1: and 3.
- 5:04Speaker 6: Now as Jesus passed by, he saw a man who
- 5:07Speaker 6: was blind from birth. His disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi,
- 5:12Speaker 6: who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was
- 5:15Speaker 6: born blind? Jesus answered, Neither this man nor his parents sinned,
- 5:20Speaker 6: but that the works of God should be revealed in him.
- 5:24Speaker 1: The disciples are like, okay. So this man, he was
- 5:27Speaker 1: born blind. When he was born, he couldn't see. Is
- 5:30Speaker 1: it because he sinned or is it because his parents
- 5:33Speaker 1: sinned and now it's a punishment or consequence for them
- 5:36Speaker 1: or for him? And Jesus said, no, neither. It's so
- 5:41Speaker 1: that God should be revealed in him. Jesus felt sorry
- 5:44Speaker 1: for the poor blind man. And so what strange thing
- 5:47Speaker 1: did he do? Let's look at verses 6 and 7.
- 5:51Speaker 1: We're still in John chapter 9. And now let's read
- 5:55Speaker 1: verse 6 and verse 7. Here's what it says.
- 5:58Speaker 6: So he spit on the ground in the dirt.
- 6:20Speaker 1: And he made a clay with the saliva. That must
- 6:23Speaker 1: have been a lot of spitting.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Right?
- 6:30Speaker 1: A lot of spitting. He's spitting in the dirt. He's
- 6:33Speaker 1: making a clay or like a mud made out of
- 6:37Speaker 1: his spit and out of the dirt. That sounds kind
- 6:41Speaker 1: of disgusting, doesn't it?
- 6:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 6:45Speaker 1: He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay.
- 6:48Speaker 1: So then he takes this clay. Imagine this. Close your eyes.
- 6:52Speaker 1: And he presses the clay over the eyes of the
- 6:55Speaker 1: blind man. So now the blind man has this mud
- 6:59Speaker 1: made with the dirt and Jesus spit on his eyes.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Okay.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Can he see anything?
- 7:05Speaker 5: No.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Could he see anything before the mud? No, because he
- 7:08Speaker 1: was blind. Then what did Jesus tell him to do?
- 7:12Speaker 1: To go wash in the pool of Siloam. Jesus wasn't
- 7:17Speaker 1: there when the man came back from washing the pool.
- 7:19Speaker 1: So he walks off, he goes to the pool, probably
- 7:23Speaker 1: has somebody lead him, and then washes off the mud.
- 7:26Speaker 1: And what happens? He can see. But the neighbors, others
- 7:31Speaker 1: who knew him were all there. And the man's face
- 7:34Speaker 1: was so different now that he could see. His eyes
- 7:37Speaker 1: were bright and shining. And instead of looking anxious and afraid,
- 7:41Speaker 1: he was smiling. He was laughing for joy.
- 7:43Speaker 5: He could see.
- 7:46Speaker 1: People even wondered if he's the same man. Is that
- 7:50Speaker 1: really the blind man that was here? Let's read verses
- 7:53Speaker 1: 8 and verse 9. The man hadn't.
- 7:55Speaker 6: Been able to see until after he washed the clay off.
- 8:14Speaker 1: So had he been able to see Jesus? Did he
- 8:17Speaker 1: know who had done it or what the man looked like? No,
- 8:20Speaker 1: he didn't. All he knew was his name. Let's read
- 8:24Speaker 1: verses 10 through 12. Verses 10 through 12.
- 8:29Speaker 6: Therefore they said to him, How were your eyes opened?
- 8:34Speaker 6: He answered and said, A man called Jesus made clay
- 8:38Speaker 6: and anointed my eyes and said to me, Go to
- 8:41Speaker 6: the pool of Siloam and wash. So I went and washed,
- 8:45Speaker 6: and I received sight. Then they said to him, Where
- 8:48Speaker 6: is he? He said, I do not know.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Jesus had done this on Sabbath, and the people wanted
- 8:55Speaker 1: the Pharisees to know about it, and it started a
- 8:58Speaker 1: big argument. Some said that Jesus was a sinner because
- 9:03Speaker 1: he'd healed someone on Sabbath. Remember, they had all those rules.
- 9:06Speaker 1: You couldn't carry a handkerchief. You couldn't look in a mirror.
- 9:10Speaker 1: You couldn't write anything down. You couldn't even walk part
- 9:14Speaker 1: of a mile or a kilometer on the Sabbath. Oh,
- 9:18Speaker 1: there were so many rules. Some said that, well, he healed.
- 9:22Speaker 1: And so that means he helped somebody. That means that
- 9:26Speaker 1: he broke the Sabbath. Others said, no way. He can't
- 9:29Speaker 1: be a sinner. because God had done such a wonderful
- 9:32Speaker 1: miracle through him. Let's read verses 13, 14, 15, and 16,
- 9:38Speaker 1: those four verses. John chapter 9, verses 13 through 16.
- 9:44Speaker 6: They brought him who formerly was blind to the Pharisees.
- 9:49Speaker 6: Now it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay
- 9:52Speaker 6: and opened his eyes. Then the Pharisees also asked him
- 9:56Speaker 6: again how he had received his sight. He said to them,
- 10:00Speaker 6: He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and
- 10:04Speaker 6: I see. Therefore some of the Pharisees said, This man
- 10:08Speaker 6: is not from God, because he does not keep the Sabbath.
- 10:12Speaker 6: Others said, How can a man who is a sinner
- 10:15Speaker 6: do such signs? And there was a division among them.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Finally, they turned to the man and they said, well,
- 10:22Speaker 1: what do you think? Because he's the one who was healed.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Let's read verse 17. What did he say?
- 10:28Speaker 6: They said to the blind man again, what do you
- 10:32Speaker 6: say about him? Because he opened your eyes. He said,
- 10:36Speaker 6: he is a prophet.
- 10:38Speaker 1: He had a lot of confidence in Jesus. He didn't
- 10:40Speaker 1: say he was the Messiah because he didn't know that
- 10:43Speaker 1: much yet. But he did know that he was an
- 10:45Speaker 1: amazing man and he must be a prophet. The people
- 10:49Speaker 1: who thought Jesus had sinned still didn't want to believe
- 10:52Speaker 1: what the man was saying. So what did they do next?
- 10:55Speaker 1: They're like, uh, I think he's lying. So let's read
- 10:59Speaker 1: verses 18, 19, 20, and 21. 18 through 21.
- 11:05Speaker 6: But the Jews did not believe concerning him that he
- 11:09Speaker 6: had been blind and received his sight until they called
- 11:12Speaker 6: the parents of him who had received his sight. They
- 11:15Speaker 6: asked them, saying, Is this your son who you say
- 11:18Speaker 6: was born blind? How then does he now see? His
- 11:22Speaker 6: parents answered them and said, We know that this is
- 11:25Speaker 6: our son and that he was born blind. But by
- 11:28Speaker 6: what means he now sees we do not know, or
- 11:32Speaker 6: who opened his eyes we do not know. He is
- 11:35Speaker 6: of age. Ask him. He will speak for himself.
- 11:38Speaker 1: They're like, you know what? We need to bring his
- 11:40Speaker 1: parents because... Maybe he's telling a lie. Let's see if
- 11:45Speaker 1: his parents can tell us the truth. Maybe he really
- 11:47Speaker 1: wasn't born blind, or maybe he could only kind of see.
- 11:51Speaker 1: What did the man's parents answer? Verse 22.
- 11:54Speaker 6: His parents said these things because they feared the Jews,
- 11:58Speaker 6: but the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed
- 12:02Speaker 6: that he was Christ, he would be put out of
- 12:05Speaker 6: the synagogue.
- 12:06Speaker 1: The Bible says that they were afraid because... They knew
- 12:11Speaker 1: that if they were to say that, yeah, Jesus did
- 12:14Speaker 1: this miracle, Jesus is the Christ, the Jews would be
- 12:17Speaker 1: so mad that they would put them out of the synagogue.
- 12:20Speaker 1: And that was a big punishment. Being put out of
- 12:23Speaker 1: the synagogue, it was serious, very serious. For one thing,
- 12:28Speaker 1: they wouldn't be allowed to worship there for 30 days.
- 12:31Speaker 1: And so what did the parents say? What did they
- 12:33Speaker 1: decide to say? They're like, uh-oh, we got to be
- 12:35Speaker 1: careful what we say here, because if we say the
- 12:37Speaker 1: wrong thing, we're going to be put out of the synagogue.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Let's read verse 23. I love their response. They're like,
- 12:50Speaker 1: he's old enough. You can just talk to him. We
- 12:53Speaker 1: don't want to get involved. If you had been the
- 12:56Speaker 1: blind man, how do you think you would have been
- 12:58Speaker 1: feeling about everything that was happening? His parents wouldn't stand
- 13:03Speaker 1: up for him. And his friends, they were all trying
- 13:08Speaker 1: to figure out what was really going on. And the
- 13:11Speaker 1: Jews are clearly furious. And all that had happened was
- 13:16Speaker 1: he was just sitting there, told to go wash in
- 13:18Speaker 1: the pool of Siloam. He did, and now he could see.
- 13:21Speaker 1: That's exciting. But not everybody was excited for him. We're
- 13:26Speaker 1: going to find out next time what happened as they're
- 13:29Speaker 1: there having this discussion. How is the man going to respond?
- 13:34Speaker 1: What's going to happen? What are the Jews, the Pharisees,
- 13:37Speaker 1: what are they going to do? Are they going to
- 13:40Speaker 1: end up coming around and believing who Jesus was? Or
- 13:44Speaker 1: are they going to stay really strong in their beliefs
- 13:48Speaker 1: and their anger and their dislike of Jesus? Well, we'll
- 13:51Speaker 1: have to find out next time. Dear Lord, thank you
- 13:55Speaker 1: so much for your healing power, for the work that
- 13:59Speaker 1: you do in our lives even. When we get sick,
- 14:02Speaker 1: when we get colds, you help us to heal. When
- 14:06Speaker 1: we fall down, when we scrape our leg, when we
- 14:08Speaker 1: get bumps and bruises, you help our body to heal.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Thank you for that. Thank you for your healing power.
- 14:16Speaker 1: We look forward to the day when we can live
- 14:18Speaker 1: up in heaven with you with no more sickness, no
- 14:20Speaker 1: more sorrow, no more owies, no more scrapes. We can
- 14:25Speaker 1: live there in perfect peace and perfect happiness. Go with
- 14:29Speaker 1: us today, Lord, in everything that we do. Help us
- 14:33Speaker 1: to be lights everywhere we go, sharing your love with others.
- 14:37Speaker 1: In Jesus' name, amen.
- 14:45Speaker 4: John 10, 11.
- 14:54Speaker 2: I am the good shepherd, I am the good shepherd,
- 14:59Speaker 2: the good shepherd gives his life for the sheep. I
- 15:09Speaker 2: am the good shepherd, I am the good shepherd, the
- 15:14Speaker 2: good shepherd gives his life for the sheep. I am
- 15:25Speaker 2: the good shepherd, I am the good shepherd, the good
- 15:31Speaker 2: shepherd gives his life for the sheep. I am the
- 15:40Speaker 2: good shepherd, I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd
- 15:48Speaker 2: gives his life for the sheep. John 10, verse 11.
