- 0:30Speaker 1: Dark A Prayer for Hope When Life Feels Dark Written
- 0:53Speaker 1: by Rachel Wojo Read by Leah Gerard For in this
- 0:57Speaker 1: hope we were saved, But hope that is seen is
- 1:01Speaker 1: no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have?
- 1:05Speaker 1: But if we hope for what we do not yet have,
- 1:09Speaker 1: we wait for it patiently. Romans 8, 24-25 I had
- 1:16Speaker 1: the old cordless phone in my hand ready to punch
- 1:18Speaker 1: the numbers. I was calling my mom on a normal
- 1:21Speaker 1: Thursday morning. Then I realized what I was doing. Mom
- 1:25Speaker 1: wouldn't be picking up on the other side. She no
- 1:28Speaker 1: longer lived on this planet. Her home was in heaven.
- 1:32Speaker 1: I remember standing there in my little kitchen and the
- 1:35Speaker 1: sorrow of it washing over me all over again. The
- 1:39Speaker 1: heaviness of her being gone and me stuck, waiting. I
- 1:43Speaker 1: knew I'd see my mother again, but time stood as
- 1:46Speaker 1: a strong enemy between that moment and the present. Heaven
- 1:50Speaker 1: felt very far away. The distance between what had been
- 1:55Speaker 1: and what would be was a thick darkness I could
- 1:58Speaker 1: never see through. If you've ever stood in a moment
- 2:02Speaker 1: like that, then you understand what I'm attempting to describe.
- 2:06Speaker 1: It's the reality of knowing there's something you'll never be
- 2:10Speaker 1: able to fix or hurry. It doesn't always feel like
- 2:14Speaker 1: a dramatic moment. Sometimes it's just a break in everyday life,
- 2:18Speaker 1: knowing that what you're waiting for is something you cannot see.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Romans 8 is one of my favorite passages in the Bible.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Paul logically discerns who hopes for what you already have.
- 2:31Speaker 1: We often think, well, if I could just get a
- 2:33Speaker 1: glimpse of God's good plan, then I'd have some hope.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Paul tells us in this chapter that it's actually the opposite.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Hope that is seen is not hope at all. If
- 2:44Speaker 1: you can already see it, you don't need hope. The
- 2:48Speaker 1: kind of hope Paul describes is the kind that that
- 2:51Speaker 1: sits with you in the dark, reminding you of God's
- 2:55Speaker 1: unwavering love you can hold on to even when heaven
- 2:58Speaker 1: feels far away. No matter how deep the darkness, God's
- 3:04Speaker 1: love is hope you can cling to. Jesus sits with
- 3:08Speaker 1: us in the dark. What I've come to understand is
- 3:12Speaker 1: that the sense we need most in the dark is
- 3:16Speaker 1: the sense of his presence. Knowing in our heart of
- 3:20Speaker 1: hearts that that he is with us and will never
- 3:23Speaker 1: leave us or forsake us. Hope is not off in
- 3:28Speaker 1: the distance. Hope is standing by the phone in the kitchen,
- 3:32Speaker 1: reminding us that we are never alone, even in our
- 3:36Speaker 1: darkest moments. Let's pray. Heavenly Father, you understand the weight
- 3:43Speaker 1: of this moment I'm holding. Though heaven feels far away,
- 3:47Speaker 1: you are with me in the everyday moments of life.
- 3:50Speaker 1: I confess that in the darkness, all I want is
- 3:53Speaker 1: to see. I want light shining on a timeline and
- 3:57Speaker 1: proof of what lies ahead. When I can't see that,
- 4:00Speaker 1: I think hope has failed. But waiting is not a
- 4:05Speaker 1: sign that you've forgotten me. Waiting is the very place
- 4:09Speaker 1: where you've shown up so that I can get to
- 4:12Speaker 1: know you more deeply. Help me, Lord, to sense that
- 4:16Speaker 1: you are here. I don't need all the answers today.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I simply need to trust you in the dark and
- 4:23Speaker 1: hold on to the hope you alone can offer. In Jesus' name, amen.
