- 0:00What's up, man? Here's a question I've been
- 0:02thinking a lot about. When did Christian men come to
- 0:05believe that being faithful and forceful were two different
- 0:10categories? When did we decide that being a
- 0:13godly man at your job meant being a nice one?
- 0:18Polite, pleasant, passive. The guy who never makes waves.
- 0:24The guy who shows up, just does what's asked, goes home and
- 0:29calls that righteousness because no one complained.
- 0:35Brothers, today I want to push back on that really hard.
- 0:39Here's the reality. You should be a problem.
- 0:42A good problem, but a problem all the same.
- 0:46You should be a hard charger. You should be a freaking force
- 0:52to be reckoned with because Scripture doesn't put weak and
- 0:56soft men on the highlight reel. The Bible puts men like Nehemiah
- 1:01on the highlight reel. The Bible puts men like Paul on
- 1:05the highlight reel. A man who said I worked harder
- 1:07than any of them. And then in the same breath he
- 1:10said, though it wasn't I, but it was the grace of God with me.
- 1:14And of course, the Bible puts Jesus on the highlight reel.
- 1:17And Jesus was a man who caused a ruckus wherever he went and
- 1:22eventually sweat drops of blood for us.
- 1:28That's the man we're going after today.
- 1:30Not a softer version of you, a sacred version of you.
- 1:34A man who is relentless for the right reasons, by the right
- 1:38power towards the right ends. Well, let's get into it.
- 1:43Well, welcome back to Sacred Men.
- 1:45I'm Pastor Justin Dean from Sacred City Church.
- 1:48And this is the show where you want to encourage, teach, and
- 1:51train strong Christian men to be virtuous in a weak and
- 1:56effeminate culture. Today's episode is about being
- 1:59relentless men, and I think this is going to be a good one.
- 2:02I'm pretty stoked about it. I I love how God pulls
- 2:06influences together. In the last week, I've been
- 2:09reading through the book of Acts and my morning devotions, and
- 2:13I've been taking my junior high students at New City Classical
- 2:16Academy through the book of Nehemiah in the afternoon.
- 2:19Then a buddy recommended a book called Relentless to Me by Tim
- 2:26Grover. If you don't know this book,
- 2:28many of you probably read it, some of you haven't.
- 2:31I don't read this kind of book anymore, but he he recommended
- 2:34to me, I picked it up. It's an easy read, a quick read.
- 2:38Grover was the trainer who worked with Michael Jordan, Kobe
- 2:43Bryant and Dwyane Wade. And it's all about basically the
- 2:50mentality of the best of the best, what he calls cleaners,
- 2:54the mentality of relentless men. And of course, this is not a
- 2:58Christian book, so you got to chew the meat and spit out the
- 3:00bones. But all three of these books,
- 3:03all three of these influences have came together to kind of
- 3:07form my thoughts around this podcast because they're all
- 3:12about being relentless in our vocation.
- 3:16So by the end of the podcast, I want you to walk away with 1
- 3:19clear conviction in your chest. The man who follows Jesus has
- 3:25more reason than anyone alive to be relentless in his vocation.
- 3:31Not less, more. All right, so listen, I don't
- 3:35know what you're doing. Grab your coffee, grab your
- 3:37energy drink, whatever you're doing, and let's get after it.
- 3:40So the first thing I want to do is I want to start with a
- 3:42diagnosis. Because before we talk about
- 3:44being relentless, we need to talk about why we aren't.
- 3:49Here's what I see in the church. I see a generation of Christian
- 3:53men who have confused rest with retreat, who have confused
- 3:59contentment with complacency, who have confused humility with
- 4:06mediocrity. And we've built kind of a whole
- 4:09vocabulary around it. We say things like, I'm just
- 4:11trying to be faithful. And what we really mean is I'm
- 4:14trying really hard not to get fired.
- 4:17I just want to fly under the radar.
- 4:18I just want to be a cog in the machine, take my get my
- 4:21paycheck, go home. We say things like I don't want
- 4:25to make an idol out of my work. And what we really mean is I
- 4:29don't want to have to work 60 hours a week.
- 4:31We say I want to prior prioritize my family.
- 4:35And what we really mean is I'm going to clock out at 4:59 and
- 4:40resent every man around me who's still grinding because clearly
- 4:44he has his priorities wrong. Listen, there is a time for
- 4:48rest. There's there's a time to go
- 4:51home early to be with your family.
- 4:53There's a time to take a vacation.
- 4:55There really is. And we're going to get there by
- 4:57the end of the podcast. But somewhere along the way, the
- 5:01Christian man started believing that the goal of the gospel was
- 5:05to make him easier to manage, quieter, smaller, less.
- 5:12I know I've thought these things in the past.
- 5:15Here's the problem with that. The Holy Spirit does not make
- 5:19men more insignificant or easier to control.
- 5:24Just the opposite. When we bow our knee to Christ,
- 5:28when we fear Him above anyone else, we begin to live under His
- 5:33control. But he makes us more passionate
- 5:37for truth, more relentless to do good, more desirous of truly
- 5:43beautiful things in this world. And that makes us a problem,
- 5:47right? That makes us a real danger to
- 5:50those who live by lies, to those who deal and half truths and
- 5:55political sophistry, who want to do evil things and destroy that
- 5:58which is beautiful. See, the Spirit of God did not
- 6:01raise Jesus from the dead. So you could be a nice guy ruled
- 6:06by morons. He raised Jesus from the dead
- 6:10and put that same spirit in you so you could bow your knee to
- 6:13him and then you could put your hand to the plow that he set in
- 6:18front of you and never look back or let anything stop you as you
- 6:22pursue his calling on your life. So if you've been telling
- 6:25yourself that the Christian life is mostly about playing it safe
- 6:29and keeping things tidy, I'm here to tell you that's bull
- 6:33crap. That's a counterfeit
- 6:35Christianity. That's a domesticated
- 6:38discipleship, and it's killing your manhood and it's killing
- 6:42your vocation. Now, before we get any further,
- 6:46I want to define my terms real quick because we've already
- 6:49covered this in previous podcast.
- 6:51What do I mean by vocation? Vocation comes from a Latin
- 6:53word, vocatio. It means Our Calling, a
- 6:56summoning from God. It's the voice of God, assigning
- 7:01you through his Providence to a place, a role, a piece of work
- 7:08in his world. Vocation is not the same thing
- 7:11as your job, though. Your job is a part of your
- 7:13vocation. Your job might pay you, but your
- 7:17vocation is what God has entrusted to you, right?
- 7:20So it's it's if you're a husband, it's part of that is
- 7:23being a husband, being a father, your workplace, a Christian man
- 7:28as a part of a church. All of that is part of your
- 7:30vocation. But every Christian man has a
- 7:34vocation and every Christian man is accountable for what he does
- 7:39with it. We're accountable to God to how
- 7:41we man that post that God's put us at.
- 7:43OK, so diagnosis on the table, vocation defined.
- 7:47Let's get into the word and see some relentless men.
- 7:50I told you in the cold open that the Bible has its own highlight
- 7:53reel of relentless men. And we aren't going to leave
- 7:56today without watching at least two of those clips.
- 8:00We're just going to take a a snippet of these two men.
- 8:03The 1st is Nehemiah, one of my favorite dudes in the Bible.
- 8:07And if you don't know who Nehemiah was, Nehemiah was the
- 8:09cupbearer to the king of Persia in the 5th century BC.
- 8:14He was a Jew in exile. He was working in the palace of
- 8:18Artaxerxes, who I think is also Darius.
- 8:22And in chapter 1, his brother walks in from Jerusalem and
- 8:27tells him the wall of the holy city is torn down, It's rubble.
- 8:33The gates are burned with fire. The city isn't in a bad state,
- 8:37right? So the covenant city, the city
- 8:39where God's presence literally dwelled and the temple, all of
- 8:42that is destroyed, all of that is in ruin, right?
- 8:45So what we, the, the, the chapter begins with Nehemiah
- 8:49getting bad news, right? Getting bad news.
- 8:53But watch what Nehemiah does here, right?
- 8:56He doesn't freak out, he doesn't get angry, nor does he shrug his
- 9:01shoulders and say, what does it have to do to me?
- 9:02You know, I'm, I'm out here, I'm not in, that's not my city.
- 9:05I'm not there anymore, right? The text says what he does when
- 9:08he gets his bad news. He sits down, he weeps, he
- 9:14mourns, he fasts, and then he prays before the God of heaven.
- 9:20And he does this for several days.
- 9:23Now, what's going on here? This is God putting a burden on
- 9:27his back, OK? This is God calling Nehemiah to
- 9:33a new vocation, a different vocation, right?
- 9:36And brothers, this is where this is like the first move of the
- 9:41relentless Christian man. Before Nehemiah makes a plan,
- 9:45before he lifts a stone, before he leads leaders, he draws near
- 9:50to God. That's the first thing he does.
- 9:54Your relentlessness better start on your knees or you're going to
- 10:01end up on your back, right? We want to throw ourselves into
- 10:05whatever it is that God has called us to, but we cannot take
- 10:09on every burden. We can't change the whole world.
- 10:14If we try, we'll burn out for sure.
- 10:18So the first thing a relentless man does is we pray, we seek
- 10:23God, we find clarity, and then once we find that clarity, we
- 10:28pursue that purpose with relentlessness and intensity.
- 10:34So the next thing he does, he gets up, he approaches the king,
- 10:38which is a risky move. He could be killed for this.
- 10:43You can't look sad in the King's presence.
- 10:45And he does. But Nehemiah here has already
- 10:50counted the cost. He says, if I die, I die.
- 10:52I'm going before the king. God's placed this burden on me
- 10:55and if I die, I die. I'm going to go before him and
- 10:57and I'm going to put this vision that God's placed in my heart.
- 11:00I'm going to put this before the king and see how the king
- 11:03responds to it. So what does he do?
- 11:05Nehemiah makes bold requests. He asks for time off.
- 11:11He asks for letters of safe passage.
- 11:15He asks for timber from the King's forest.
- 11:18He asked for the king to pay for this thing.
- 11:21And the king does it all. Why?
- 11:25Well, Nehemiah tells us. Why?
- 11:26Because he keeps saying this over and over through the book.
- 11:29He says, because the good hand of my God was upon me, God's put
- 11:34this burden on me. God's favor is with me.
- 11:37I've sought his favor. I've sought his pleasure, I've
- 11:39sought his will. And now the wind at my back is
- 11:44God's pleasure, right? So what does he do?
- 11:49Grabs his people. He goes to Jerusalem.
- 11:51And this is interesting. He doesn't show up with a lot of
- 11:53fanfare. He doesn't announce himself.
- 11:55He waits three days, then at night, but by himself, but
- 11:59really with a couple other dudes, he he rides around and he
- 12:03surveys the walls. He's counting the gaps in the
- 12:06walls. He's measuring how broken it is.
- 12:09He's thinking about how long this is going to take us to do.
- 12:12How many men do I need? What's the best way?
- 12:14So he what basically what he's doing, he's he's creating a
- 12:16plan, right? He's creating a plan.
- 12:19And then he stands up before the leaders of the city and he says,
- 12:22men come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no
- 12:26longer suffer derision. So now he's he's casting this
- 12:29compelling vision. He's recruiting men to come help
- 12:32him. And what happens next is one of
- 12:35the most relentless construction projects in history.
- 12:41Now, no construction project happens without obstacles.
- 12:48We're not who if you're, if you're building a sandcastle,
- 12:51nothing. You know, it's not going to take
- 12:52a lot. There's not going to be a lot of
- 12:53difficulty there. But if you're building something
- 12:55that matters, if you're doing work that matters, you're going
- 12:58to face opposition, you're going to face roadblocks.
- 13:01It's not going to be smooth sailing.
- 13:03Think about Michael Jordan winning 6 championships.
- 13:05Think about the flu game. There's always stuff that's
- 13:07going to come up and make things difficult for you.
- 13:12So what happens here is Nehemiah starts this construction project
- 13:15and immediately opposition arises.
- 13:18He's got haters who want to stop him.
- 13:21Sambalat mocks him, Tobiah mocks him, Geshem mocks him.
- 13:27They start saying who's going to restore this wall?
- 13:31Who's going to build it? Even if they build it, a fox can
- 13:33go up on it and break down the wall.
- 13:35See, that's that's all like chapter 4.
- 13:37The relentless man gets mocked. The relentless man needs to
- 13:42expect opposition and keep going.
- 13:46Well, they ratchet up their attack and that mockery begins
- 13:50to turn into threats. They start plotting to attack
- 13:54him. They start plotting to destroy
- 13:56him. So what does Nehemiah do?
- 13:58This is man, if you're pushing, if you, if you've got a calling
- 14:03from God and you're pushing forward, there are going to be
- 14:07people that want to stop you. There are going to be the enemy
- 14:09wants to stop you, people don't like you, want to stop you.
- 14:13People that are jealous of you are going to try to stop you.
- 14:15And many people, when they hit that obstacle, they just give
- 14:17up. Right now there's a roadblock.
- 14:19Maybe it's not God's will. Well, that's not what Nehemiah
- 14:21does. Nehemiah, when he hears all
- 14:24these attacks and he hears all these stuff going on, he plans
- 14:28for it. He posts armed guards around the
- 14:32workers, and then he tells the workers that he wants them to
- 14:36build with one hand and hold a weapon with another hand.
- 14:40Brothers, that's a sacred men image right there.
- 14:44A trowel in one hand to build and a sword in the other to
- 14:47defend. Building and defending at the
- 14:50same time. That's what vocation looks like
- 14:54in a fallen world. Like we're not going to stop
- 14:58just because we have opposition. Mocking's not going to stop us.
- 15:02Threats aren't going to stop us. And by the end of the book,
- 15:05Nehemiah, literally, he threatens to put hands on
- 15:08people. That's his.
- 15:09That's literally the scripture. And then he does it.
- 15:12He actually gets into fights. He has to fight people who are
- 15:16trying to stop what God is doing.
- 15:18That is relentlessness. Then they try to distract him.
- 15:24Mocking didn't work. Opposition didn't work.
- 15:26So now they try to distract him and they send four different
- 15:29messages saying Nehemiah, come down off the wall and have a
- 15:34meeting with us. Let's talk about this.
- 15:37And Nehemiah sends back and you got to memorize this verse, man,
- 15:41Nehemiah chapter 6, verse three, he says, I am doing a great work
- 15:46and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I
- 15:50leave it and come down to you? That's the verse of a relentless
- 15:55man. I am doing a great work and I
- 15:59cannot come down. In other words, I am on mission
- 16:01from God. I have a vocation.
- 16:04I have a calling in this world. I know what it is and I'm
- 16:07pursuing it with relentlessness. And I'm not going to come down
- 16:10to have some pointless meeting with you.
- 16:14See, when the world wants to pull you off your post, to pull
- 16:18you off your wall, when the distractions and the meetings
- 16:21and the noise and the algorithms and the small drama want to pull
- 16:25you off the wall that God has called you to build, you say
- 16:27what Nehemiah said. I am doing a great work and I
- 16:31cannot come down. You don't come down for fear.
- 16:35You don't come down for flattery.
- 16:37You don't come down for anything.
- 16:39You stay at your post, you stay on the wall.
- 16:43And the text says that the wall went up in 52 days.
- 16:48So they, they, they accomplished this crazy construction project
- 16:51in 52 days. And when their enemies heard of
- 16:54it, they were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem, for
- 16:59they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the
- 17:01help of our God. See, that's the goal, brothers.
- 17:05Relentless men doing relentless work that makes the watching
- 17:11world say only God could have done that.
- 17:14So that's Nehemiah. He's a dude.
- 17:18And now Paul, if Nehemiah is the relentless man on the wall, Paul
- 17:24is the relentless man on the road.
- 17:27This man could not be stopped. 2nd Corinthians 11 Listen what
- 17:32it says here. This is from Paul.
- 17:34Five times I received at the hand of the Jews the 40 lashes.
- 17:39Less. 1/5 times he had been beaten with 39 lashes.
- 17:44Dude beat to an inch of his life. 5 * 3 times I was beaten
- 17:49with rods. Once I was stoned.
- 17:52And of course this means they threw rocks at him, right?
- 17:55Didn't get high here, right? Once I was stoned.
- 17:57Three times I was shipwrecked. A night and a day.
- 18:00I was adrift at sea on frequent journeys and danger from rivers,
- 18:06danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from
- 18:10Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger
- 18:14at sea, danger from false brothers in toil and hardship,
- 18:19through many a sleepless night. In hunger and thirst, often
- 18:22without food, in cold and exposure.
- 18:26That is relentlessness. You study the book of Acts.
- 18:31Nothing could stop Paul. Look at all this stuff.
- 18:33Look at how they tried to stop him.
- 18:35Nothing could stop him. He would come in, he would
- 18:37preach to a city. A riot would happen.
- 18:39He would shake the dust off of his feet.
- 18:40He'd go to the next town, Right? Brothers?
- 18:45I want you to read that text to yourself out loud this week and
- 18:51then look at the things you call hard.
- 18:55Look at the things you call roadblocks.
- 18:58Look at the things you say are stopping you from pursuing the
- 19:02vocation with this kind of intensity and relentlessness.
- 19:04Relentlessness. Look at the season that you call
- 19:07brutal, right? Look at the week that you say
- 19:10almost broke you. Then read Paul's resume again
- 19:15and remember that the man who wrote most this man who wrote
- 19:18most of his letters from prison, right?
- 19:23Nothing could stop him. He wrote about the joy of Christ
- 19:28from prison. How, how, how does a man do
- 19:31that? Well, in first Corinthians 15
- 19:35verse 10, this is what Paul says.
- 19:38By the grace of God, I am what I am.
- 19:42And his grace toward me was not in vain.
- 19:44On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was
- 19:49not I, but the grace of God that is with with me.
- 19:53See, Paul's relentlessness was fueled by the grace of God.
- 20:03That's the engine brothers, he says.
- 20:05I worked harder than any of them.
- 20:08I was relentless. Though it was not I, but the
- 20:11grace of God within me. See, Paul refuses to believe 2
- 20:18lies in the same breath here. He refuses the lie that says I'm
- 20:22just a passive victim. I just sit here and let God do
- 20:26it. And he also refuses the lie that
- 20:28says I'm a self-made man. I did it all myself.
- 20:31I did it all through grit he says.
- 20:34So we're not talking about a David Goggins style
- 20:38relentlessness here. We're not talking about a
- 20:40Michael Jordan style relentlessness here.
- 20:42Now, those are all great. They can, they can help you be
- 20:44mentally strong. But we're talking about
- 20:47something supernatural, right? He's saying I was relentless
- 20:52because I was a recipient of the grace of God.
- 20:57By the grace of God, I am what I am.
- 20:59By the grace of God, I'm relentless.
- 21:01That's the Christian paradox. It's the only paradox that
- 21:05produces both a relentless man, but without producing a monster.
- 21:13Like you watch documentaries on Michael Jordan.
- 21:17You, you, you, you listen to David Goggins.
- 21:20Those guys are monsters. They, they, they've done
- 21:22outstanding thing and they're also impossible to live with.
- 21:25They've also got a trail of broken relationships around
- 21:28them. They, they, they're not loved by
- 21:30those closest to them. See, only the the only the grace
- 21:33of God can make us relentless without turning us into a
- 21:38monster. And then in Philippians 3, Paul
- 21:42beat down in jail again, says this, Forgetting what lies
- 21:47behind and straining forward to what lies ahead.
- 21:50I pressed on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of
- 21:55God in Christ Jesus. Paul here, after going through
- 21:59everything he's going through, he's still straining forward,
- 22:02right? He refuses to coast.
- 22:05He's not retiring, he's not phoning it in.
- 22:09He's still straining. He's still moving forward with
- 22:13relentlessness. And then finally, in Second
- 22:16Timothy 4, Paul's last letter, when the chains are around him,
- 22:20the cell is cold and honestly, the executioner is sharpening
- 22:24the sword. He says this.
- 22:27I fought the good fight. I have finished the race.
- 22:32I have kept the faith, brothers. That's one sentence that I once
- 22:37spoken over my casket. He fought the good fight, he
- 22:42finished the race. He kept the faith.
- 22:46That should be the Christian man's epitaph.
- 22:50That's what we're aiming for. So look at these two men
- 22:54together. Nehemiah on the wall, Paul on
- 22:57the road. 1A Layman, one, an apostle, one in the 5th century
- 23:02BC, one in the 1st century, 80, one holding a trowel and a
- 23:06sword, one holding a pen. Same spirit, same engine, same
- 23:11relentlessness. The God who made Nehemiah
- 23:15unmovable is the God who made Paul unstoppable.
- 23:19And brothers, that is the God who lives in you.
- 23:24You think you don't have it. You think you don't have it in
- 23:26you to be that kind of man. That's not my personality.
- 23:30Well, you're right. It's none of our personalities.
- 23:33We don't have that in US, but the Spirit who raised Christ
- 23:37from the dead has it in him. And he, if you're in Christ,
- 23:42lives in you. So when the world tries to get
- 23:45you off your mission, when the noise tries to drag you off the
- 23:49wall that God put you on, you say what?
- 23:52Nehemiah said. I'm doing a great work and I
- 23:56cannot come down. When someone says, why are you
- 23:58so relentless? You don't say I'm just mentally
- 24:01tough, I'm just a bad man, a jammer.
- 24:03Now you say by the grace of God, I am what I am.
- 24:06His grace is the engine for my relentlessness.
- 24:12Then we get to Colossians 3 verse 23 and 24, and Paul says
- 24:16this. Whatever you do, work heartily.
- 24:21Ask for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord
- 24:24you will receive the inheritance as your reward.
- 24:27You are serving the Lord Christ. I want you to notice three
- 24:31things from this really quick. Number 1, He says whatever you
- 24:34do, he's not dividing the world into sacred work and secular
- 24:38work. He doesn't say if you're in
- 24:39vocational ministry, work hard. The rest of you take it easy.
- 24:42He says whatever you do, the Carpenter, the accountant, the
- 24:45truck driver, the dad coaching Little League, the student
- 24:48grinding through finals, whatever you do, it's all meant
- 24:52to be done unto the Lord. Second, work heartily with a
- 24:56full heart, with all your soul. The Greek word there is psyches
- 25:02out of the soul, not out of obligation, not out of guilt,
- 25:06not out of your fear of getting in trouble, but out of the
- 25:09deepest part of who you are, where the Holy Spirit lives.
- 25:13Brothers, this is where we work from.
- 25:16Now, when's the last time you brought your whole soul to a
- 25:20Tuesday morning meeting? When was the last time you
- 25:23brought your whole soul on the job site with you?
- 25:26And you're going to. I'm doing this for the Lord.
- 25:29That's the third one. As for the Lord and not for men,
- 25:33that's where Paul kind of levels the whole thing.
- 25:37He says basically what he's saying is your boss is not your
- 25:40real boss. Your client is not your real
- 25:44client. Your inspection is not your real
- 25:48inspection. Your review is not your real
- 25:50review. Actually, there is one ultimate
- 25:54audience. There is one ultimate master and
- 25:59that's Jesus, and he's not just looking at what you produce, but
- 26:04he's looking at how you produce it, how you do it, the effort
- 26:08you put into it. Solomon says in Ecclesiastes 9
- 26:13verse 10, he says whatever your hand finds to do, do it with
- 26:17your might, do it with all your might, for there is no work or
- 26:21thought or knowledge or wisdom and she'll to which you are
- 26:24going. I want you to hear that Solomon
- 26:28writes that with urgency, an urgency that most Christian men
- 26:33that I know don't feel. He says do it with your might
- 26:37because you're going to die. That's the logic.
- 26:41The grave is coming. You don't get this Tuesday back.
- 26:45You don't get this Sunday back. You don't get this quarterback.
- 26:48You don't get these years with your kids in the house back.
- 26:53So whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might.
- 26:58Proverbs 2229. Do you see a man skillful in his
- 27:01work? He will stand before kings.
- 27:03He will not stand before obscure men.
- 27:06God built the universe. So that skill with relentless
- 27:11labor, right and and blessed by faithfulness typically gets a
- 27:19hearing, right? That's not a prosperity gospel,
- 27:23that's just Proverbs. If you are relentless in your
- 27:26work and you're good at your work and you're faithful to God,
- 27:29he's going to put you before people that can promote you.
- 27:33That's a proverb. And Paul says again, First
- 27:37Corinthians 9, do you not know that in a race all the runners
- 27:41run but only one receives the prize?
- 27:45So run that you may obtain it. Notice this.
- 27:47He's not saying just be a runner, he's saying win the
- 27:50freaking race. Be the fastest guy.
- 27:53It says every athlete exercises self-control in all things.
- 27:56They do it to to receive a perishable wreath.
- 27:59But we an imperishable so and we we we're doing this for eternal
- 28:04rewards. So I do not run aimlessly.
- 28:07I do not box as one beating the air, but I discipline my body
- 28:11and keep it under control unless after preaching to others, I
- 28:14myself should be disqualified. He's relentless for a purpose,
- 28:19an eternal purpose. Brothers, that's not the
- 28:23language of a man who's trying to maximize his time off, who's
- 28:28trying to clock out at 4:59. That's the language of a man on
- 28:33a mission so total that he'd rather collapse and die than
- 28:38coast. Paul is training here.
- 28:41He's training for heaven. He's disciplining his body.
- 28:47He's running for the prize and he wasn't doing this to earn his
- 28:52salvation. He was doing this because of his
- 28:55salvation. He wasn't running to be loved or
- 28:58running to be accepted or running to be forgiven.
- 29:01He was running because he was loved, he was forgiven, and he
- 29:04was accepted by God. You see the difference?
- 29:08See David Goggins and these guys and Grover, these guys say be
- 29:11relentless so you can become someone, right?
- 29:15The gospel says because Christ has made you someone in him.
- 29:19Now you can be relentless for him.
- 29:24You're not striving from a deficit.
- 29:26You're actually striving from a fullness that God provides.
- 29:30See, that's the engine. That's the engine that doesn't
- 29:34eventually burn a man up. Hebrews 12/1 and two says this.
- 29:40Let us also lay aside every weight and sin which clings so
- 29:43closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set
- 29:47before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfector of our
- 29:51faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the
- 29:55cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of
- 29:59the throne of God. See.
- 30:00Look at what Jesus did here for the joy that was set before him.
- 30:04He was relentless. The cross did not stop him.
- 30:07The mockery did not move him. The grave itself did not contain
- 30:11him. He had his face set.
- 30:13He had his mission set, and he went all the way through it
- 30:17because he loved his Father and he loved us.
- 30:21The most relentless man, whoever walked this dirt was the Lord
- 30:26Jesus Christ. And he's the one we follow.
- 30:30He's the one whose spirit is now in us.
- 30:33So when somebody tells you that being a godly man means being
- 30:37soft, quote them. Hebrews 12, Remind them of
- 30:41Nehemiah, Remind them of the apostle Paul.
- 30:44That's our model. I'm reminded of Abraham Kuyper.
- 30:52He was a Dutch Reformed minister in late 1800s.
- 30:55He he was actually the Prime Minister of the Netherlands and
- 30:59he was a theologian. And he gives us this quote.
- 31:02He says there is not a square inch.
- 31:05And the whole domain of human existence, over which Christ,
- 31:10who is sovereign over all, does not cry.
- 31:13Mine hear that? Every square inch, Christ says,
- 31:18is mine. Well, your home is an inch.
- 31:24Your office is an inch, Your work site is an inch.
- 31:29Your cubicle is an inch, your delivery route, your patient
- 31:33charts, your sermon notes, your sales calls, your line of code,
- 31:36your shop floor. Every square inch belongs to
- 31:40King Jesus, and every square inch is a place where you can
- 31:44plant the flag of His Lordship by how you work.
- 31:52So let me let me bring all this together.
- 31:57Here's what I want you to leave with #1 your vocation is sacred.
- 32:02Whatever it is, if it's lawful and you're called to it, it's a
- 32:05post, a sentry post assigned to you by God.
- 32:09There is no, you know, Tuesday. You just go to your job.
- 32:13No, you go to a sanctuary where you serve the Lord Christ.
- 32:17Treat it like that. Walk in tomorrow, like Nehemiah.
- 32:21This is your wall, right? This is your wall.
- 32:25And you know whose name is on the building because Jesus owns
- 32:30it all #2 half effort is a theological problem, not just a
- 32:37personality trait. When you give half effort, when
- 32:41you back down, when you hit a roadblock, you are saying with
- 32:45your hands what you would never say with your mouth, that the
- 32:49God who bought me with his blood isn't worth everything.
- 32:54I've got brothers. That's not humility, that's not
- 32:59balance, that's betrayal. The Christian man does not half
- 33:05ass his calling #3 relentlessness without the
- 33:11gospel is a furnace that eventually consumes the man.
- 33:18I've seen many men, even Christian men I love, burn
- 33:21themselves to the ground trying to be relentless in their own
- 33:24strength, whether that's performing for a father who
- 33:29already loves them or trying to earn what's already been given
- 33:32to them, Trying to prove what is already been proven by the cross
- 33:37brothers, If your relentlessness is fueled by fear of being
- 33:41insufficient, you're gonna you're running on the wrong
- 33:44fuel, and your engine's eventually going to explode.
- 33:48The only fuel that makes a man relentless without destroying
- 33:52him is the finished work of Christ applied by the Holy
- 33:55Spirit to a man who already knows he's loved and accepted by
- 33:59God. Grover can't give you that that
- 34:03fuel. David Goggins can't give you
- 34:05that fuel. Michael Jordan can't give you
- 34:07that fuel. Only the cross can #4 Sabbath is
- 34:15part of being relentless. Now.
- 34:17I told you we'd come back to rest.
- 34:19Listen, the man who never rests is not relentless.
- 34:24He's brittle. He's probably running on
- 34:27adrenaline and caffeine and pride, and he is really one bad
- 34:31week away from destroying it all.
- 34:35The Christian man obeys God and rests hard right?
- 34:41We work 6 days and we rest on the Sabbath.
- 34:44We rest on Sunday. We join with the Saints at
- 34:48church. We get on our knees and confess
- 34:51our sin. We listen to the sermons and and
- 34:54receive from the word of God. We enjoy and take and benefit
- 34:59from the sacraments. We've got our Bible open, right?
- 35:02We got our phone off. We got our family by our side.
- 35:05And we do this because we intend to leave this place when we're
- 35:10sent out of this place. We intend to leave this place
- 35:13and work our butts off for sick for the next 6 days, right?
- 35:18Sunday is meant to be the recharging station for the
- 35:23relentless man. If you skip it, you're
- 35:27sabotaging the very thing that you say you want.
- 35:30You can't be relentless without being.
- 35:34You can't be relentless in the Christian way, without Sabbath
- 35:38thing, without resting, without worshipping #5 and the last one.
- 35:45Your relentlessness is meant to be for someone else.
- 35:50Your relentlessness is meant to serve your wife, your kids, your
- 35:56church, your neighbors, the widow down the street, your
- 36:02boss, the new guy at work who's drowning.
- 36:06The Christian man is not driven by pride.
- 36:08He's not relentless for his own resume.
- 36:12He's relentless because his love is a real active love that does
- 36:19not coast. Look at your wife and ask what
- 36:23does it mean to be relentless for her this week?
- 36:29Look at your kids and ask what does it mean to be relentless
- 36:33for them this season? Look at your church and ask what
- 36:37does it mean to be relentless for her this season?
- 36:41That's the question. Not how do I become a relentless
- 36:44man, but who needs me to be relentless for them in Jesus
- 36:49name. That, brothers, is a sacred
- 36:52relentlessness. And that's what we're after.
- 36:56I'm going to end this one a little differently.
- 36:58I want to pray for us, OK, I'm going to pray for us.
- 37:02Let me pray. Let me pray right now.
- 37:03Father, we come to you in the name of your Son Jesus, the most
- 37:08relentless man, whoever walked this earth, the man who set his
- 37:12face towards Jerusalem and did not flinch, the man who endured
- 37:18the cross for the joy that was set before him.
- 37:20And part of the joy that was set before him was us, was these
- 37:24men, was these brothers. Listening right now, Father, we
- 37:28confess that we have often settled for less.
- 37:33We have called it humility when it was really just cowardice.
- 37:38We've called it balance when it was really just laziness.
- 37:42We've called it boundaries when it was really just self
- 37:45protection and comfort. Forgive us Lord, forgive us,
- 37:51Lord, give us grace. And Lord, by your spirit would
- 37:54you raise up a generation of Christian men who refuse to
- 37:59coast? Make us relentless, Lord.
- 38:03Men who work heartily As for the Lord and not for men.
- 38:07Men who treat every square inch of their vocation as yours.
- 38:12Men who run the race set before them with endurance, looking to
- 38:16Jesus. Make us relentless, Father, not
- 38:21for our names, but for yours. Not from fear or insecurity, but
- 38:26from joy. Not in our own strength, but in
- 38:30the strength of Christ in us. For your glory.
- 38:33Lord, we ask all of this in Jesus name, Amen.
- 38:39Well brothers, this was a blessing to you.
- 38:41I pray that you would share it with another brother you would
- 38:44like us. You would subscribe.
- 38:46Channel's growing. I appreciate it.
- 38:48We've had some technical difficulties in the last few
- 38:50weeks, but I am grinding and trying to put out at least one
- 38:52of these a week. So I will see you next week on
- 38:56sacred men. Until then, get after it and go
- 38:59act like men.
