- 0:09Speaker 1: Around DoD City and in the territory on west.
- 0:12Speaker 2: There's just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 0:15Speaker 2: and that's with a US Marshall and the smell of
- 0:18Speaker 2: gun smoke, gun smoke, storrying William Conrad. The transcribes story
- 0:41Speaker 2: of the violence that moved west with young America, the
- 0:44Speaker 2: story of a man who moved with it. Matt Dillon,
- 0:47Speaker 2: United States Marshall.
- 1:06Speaker 3: A stranger named Joe Bowdrey killed a man and Dodge,
- 1:09Speaker 3: and then got on his horse and rode ninety miles northwest.
- 1:14Speaker 4: He made it across the Smoky Hill River.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Before his horse played out and fell behind the small
- 1:19Speaker 3: nob Boudrey put a knife in him and settled on
- 1:22Speaker 3: the way. Half hour later he shot my horse off
- 1:26Speaker 3: them under me and crippled Chesters with a.
- 1:28Speaker 5: Slug in the shoulders.
- 1:30Speaker 6: And then he gave up.
- 1:31Speaker 3: He just threw down his guns and walked toward us
- 1:34Speaker 3: across the prairie, his hands in the air.
- 1:40Speaker 5: Do you think it's a trick, mister Dylan.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I don't know, Chester, but if he makes a move
- 1:43Speaker 3: or kill him, yes.
- 1:50Speaker 5: That's far enough. Cowdrick.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Now turn around, I ain't know I'm rushia, No you know.
- 2:03Speaker 3: I'm curious bout why didn't you shoot it up.
- 2:07Speaker 5: I don't want to kill anybody.
- 2:08Speaker 6: Marshall.
- 2:08Speaker 3: You killed a man and Dodge he went for his gun.
- 2:10Speaker 3: I had to some of the witnesses say didn't.
- 2:12Speaker 5: Oh sure, friends are his I heard him. That's why
- 2:15Speaker 5: I lit out.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Man looks skilly when he runs. You should have stayed
- 2:18Speaker 3: and faced Oh.
- 2:18Speaker 5: What kind of shake could I get? In this strange
- 2:20Speaker 5: Tom Marshall, everybody be against the law. Protect you.
- 2:22Speaker 3: If you're innocent, you don't have to stand trial now anyway.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Or maybe I made a mistake, but I'm still alive. Yeah,
- 2:30Speaker 4: and a long way from Dodge.
- 2:31Speaker 7: Say by Grecia said, that's right. How are we gonna
- 2:34Speaker 7: get back, mister young?
- 2:36Speaker 3: I only crossed the Overloom Express wrote about five miles
- 2:39Speaker 3: back when just walked to the road and.
- 2:41Speaker 5: Wait for his stage.
- 2:42Speaker 7: I guess, yeah, but the stage don't go up to
- 2:44Speaker 7: Dodge from here.
- 2:45Speaker 4: I will take it into Fort Donner.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Maybe the army will lend to some horses there and
- 2:49Speaker 3: we can turn them back at Fort Dodge rush them.
- 2:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Well, I know you don't know me.
- 2:54Speaker 5: No favors Marshall, but.
- 2:56Speaker 4: I've never been arrested before, I'd be kind of a
- 2:59Speaker 4: shit in front of.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Everybody at stage. Well, that's tough, Budery. What do you
- 3:03Speaker 3: expect me to do? Only a little thing, Marshall will
- 3:06Speaker 3: make a difference to you. Just don't let him know
- 3:07Speaker 3: that you're taking me in as though. All right, Boudery,
- 3:12Speaker 3: I guess it doesn't matter facts. I'm not wearing a
- 3:15Speaker 3: badge anyway. But you'll make one move and I'll hog
- 3:17Speaker 3: tie you and you'll ride on the roof.
- 3:20Speaker 5: You'll be dead.
- 3:21Speaker 3: It's a deal, Marshall. You'll get a fair trial, Boudery.
- 3:24Speaker 3: If you're innocent, you'll go free.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Well, if it is a fair trial, I'm going back
- 3:28Speaker 4: to California.
- 3:29Speaker 6: I don't know why I ever left it.
- 3:30Speaker 5: You come from California.
- 3:32Speaker 4: Yeah, hey, Marshall, Look, is it all right if I
- 3:35Speaker 4: lock my saddle back with me.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 3:36Speaker 3: Sure, we're not leaving ours Chester. I'll go with Boudery
- 3:40Speaker 3: and get his guns.
- 3:41Speaker 8: Yes, mister Dylan, I sure do.
- 3:43Speaker 7: We should stop closer to the stage road though, body
- 3:46Speaker 7: five miles is a long way packing his saddle.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Take care of your horse, Chester, let's get out of here.
- 3:51Speaker 7: Yes, the dog on shame though that was a mighty
- 3:55Speaker 7: good horse. Come on, I sure hope the stage hasn't
- 4:07Speaker 7: gone by already, mister Dylon.
- 4:09Speaker 5: Why don't you get off your back and look down
- 4:11Speaker 5: the road?
- 4:11Speaker 6: Chester Well, I.
- 4:13Speaker 7: Declare, look you Andrea. It's a common and it's painted
- 4:16Speaker 7: bright red too, mister Dylon.
- 4:19Speaker 5: What if they don't stop for us, Marshall?
- 4:21Speaker 3: Road agents don't usually carry their saddles. The driver will
- 4:24Speaker 3: notice that if he's awake.
- 4:26Speaker 7: Driving a six horse hitch ought to keep him away.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Yeah, but not sobered.
- 4:32Speaker 8: Oh that's a shotgun the messengers holdings.
- 4:42Speaker 1: He doesn't need it.
- 4:43Speaker 5: We want to ride, that's all.
- 4:45Speaker 8: Where's your horses, Marshall?
- 4:46Speaker 5: Please? You remember what you said we lost them.
- 4:49Speaker 8: They don't look like green horns to me.
- 4:52Speaker 5: It can happen to anyone. That's the women in the middle.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Ain't even arms pick them up paints All right, very,
- 5:00Speaker 3: it's your treasure, bakes.
- 5:01Speaker 8: How far are you going Fort Dollar? It's about sixty.
- 5:05Speaker 9: Miles for Fort Downer. You're drouding us. That'll be fifteen
- 5:09Speaker 9: cents a mile.
- 5:12Speaker 5: How much is that, mister Dillon?
- 5:15Speaker 10: About nine dollars, just nine dollars apiece.
- 5:18Speaker 8: It isn't payable right here.
- 5:21Speaker 3: All right, it's high, but I can't argue with you
- 5:24Speaker 3: now here you are twenty five six seven?
- 5:33Speaker 1: All right, mister, get in.
- 5:35Speaker 10: I don't know how the passagers are gonna like this.
- 5:37Speaker 5: So you got room for a couple more in here.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Anybody can't keep his horse or a walk home.
- 5:44Speaker 11: That's room for two maybe, but not three. Uh take
- 5:48Speaker 11: you look for yourself, mister.
- 5:50Speaker 5: Yeah, I guess you're right. Uh Chester, Oh, no, sure,
- 5:54Speaker 5: I can't. I want grodery on top. You'll have to
- 5:56Speaker 5: get up there. Chester.
- 5:58Speaker 7: No, I guess you're sure, but I think you fellows
- 6:02Speaker 7: out of charge.
- 6:03Speaker 8: His last If I can't.

- 6:07Speaker 9: the passengers problem.
- 6:09Speaker 4: Get in, I get fixed.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Somehow he held this up long enough.
- 6:15Speaker 12: Yeah, they don't look like.
- 6:27Speaker 4: A judge, mister, I'm not a judge.
- 6:32Speaker 11: Well it must be important somehow where aught of these
- 6:35Speaker 11: men are are?
- 6:36Speaker 6: And I fell on top there?
- 6:38Speaker 5: Calls yourself.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Well, let's just say that I'm sort of the boss
- 6:42Speaker 3: of this out mister.
- 6:45Speaker 6: But what's your name was?
- 6:48Speaker 3: I didn't say it happens to be Dylan on zimmon,
- 6:53Speaker 3: Oh man here, call himself again?
- 6:57Speaker 13: They don't give along.
- 6:58Speaker 4: Who got any you call yours?
- 7:00Speaker 11: Jodan's kind of crust him, but he's sober.
- 7:05Speaker 4: That's more than I can say for the other two here.
- 7:07Speaker 11: They only wake up long enough to pull on that
- 7:09Speaker 11: jug they got.
- 7:10Speaker 4: And get drunk enough to go back to sleep.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Oh that's not a bad way to travel, if your
- 7:14Speaker 3: stomach can stand it.
- 7:15Speaker 5: I guess, Oh, hey, moving, what's up? If I were younger?
- 7:20Speaker 6: What does this end?
- 7:21Speaker 5: Dylan?
- 7:21Speaker 4: You ask too many questions. Jimmy, you ain't.
- 7:24Speaker 5: Got no manners.
- 7:24Speaker 6: Nobody's asking you.
- 7:26Speaker 11: Oh man, good, Yeah, I don't have to edition you
- 7:28Speaker 11: go now listen here, Dan, anymore out of you and
- 7:31Speaker 11: I'll tell you what Pumpkin spoke me.
- 7:33Speaker 4: I'm too old.
- 7:35Speaker 8: Eighty five, mister.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Would you be wish?
- 7:39Speaker 3: No, Sir, I wouldn't. That's mighty old. You sure don't
- 7:43Speaker 3: look it, I know.
- 7:44Speaker 13: Mariana noise, mister medim sin Roy when he and Clark
- 7:48Speaker 13: come back?
- 7:49Speaker 4: Now, who's doing all the talking?
- 7:51Speaker 5: Leave in be summer. There's no harm in passing the time.
- 7:54Speaker 11: And look, mister, you may be the boss of these
- 7:57Speaker 11: other fellas, but you don't run me.
- 7:58Speaker 5: Nobody's trying to run here. You just take it easy.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Hey, I don't pay him no mind. I eat dish,
- 8:05Speaker 4: nervous about something.
- 8:07Speaker 6: What are you driving that home?
- 8:08Speaker 5: Man?
- 8:09Speaker 13: We're beating monument station by organ and spend nighter hope
- 8:15Speaker 13: for challenge him last, tell him I was there. All
- 8:18Speaker 13: I had was fat pork one practices. I never eat
- 8:22Speaker 13: fat pork, so.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Cook told him, well, and jersh help you shove to
- 8:27Speaker 4: the mustard.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Monument Station was a long, low hut made of sun
- 8:37Speaker 3: dried mud colored bricks with a flat roof thatched and
- 8:41Speaker 3: then sodded. The one building served as an eating room
- 8:45Speaker 3: in a daytime in a bunkhouse. At night, there wasn't
- 8:49Speaker 3: much air inside, and after dinner fat pork and mustard chester,
- 8:55Speaker 3: Butdery and I went out to the corral for a smoke.
- 9:01Speaker 7: My gracious line, I hate to think of sleeping in there,
- 9:04Speaker 7: all those men.
- 9:05Speaker 5: Why a fella could suffocate.
- 9:07Speaker 7: And I'll bet that stock tender hasn't washed himself since
- 9:10Speaker 7: he left home.
- 9:12Speaker 5: He said he washed his blankets anyways, just this morning.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Yeah, sure, you know how he spreads it on an
- 9:19Speaker 3: ant hill for a couple of hours.
- 9:20Speaker 7: Oh well, that's settled, and I'm sleeping outside all right.
- 9:25Speaker 5: Chesin.
- 9:26Speaker 3: We just don't get through cozy after night. You're standing
- 9:30Speaker 3: guard over Boudery here, I'll watch him the other hat.
- 9:32Speaker 4: Well, I'm not going to run away, Marshall. You ran
- 9:36Speaker 4: once Boudery. All right, I'll tell you something and maybe
- 9:40Speaker 4: you'll trust me a little.
- 9:41Speaker 5: Then tell me what would you like to know? Who
- 9:45Speaker 5: Zimmer is?
- 9:46Speaker 6: Zimmer?
- 9:47Speaker 7: He that real testing fella. I don't like him at all.
- 9:49Speaker 6: He's always on the prodbout.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Something right, Wait a minute, what about Zimmer Boudery?
- 9:56Speaker 5: His real name is Chess Ryan.
- 9:58Speaker 4: So well, at least that's the name was under his picture.
- 10:02Speaker 4: Where was this picture? But in California? Tacked onto a pole?
- 10:08Speaker 4: Go on, well, I think the reward was five hundred dollars.
- 10:12Speaker 5: Because it ain't certain. You're sure it was his picture?
- 10:14Speaker 4: Yeah, Marshall, I'm sure heard a lot of talk about
- 10:17Speaker 4: him in Sacramento, just for a left but kind of talk. Well,
- 10:22Speaker 4: like one time he rode in a stagecoach as a passenger,
- 10:25Speaker 4: and he was peaceful enough until some fellows on horses.
- 10:28Speaker 5: They stopped at stage in a canyon summers and.
- 10:30Speaker 4: Then this here, Chess Ryan, he pulled a gun on
- 10:32Speaker 4: the other passengers, and he disarmed him Whilst the boys
- 10:35Speaker 4: outside unloaded the treasure box.
- 10:37Speaker 5: They had an extra saddle horse.
- 10:39Speaker 4: Along and Ryane he rode off with him. That's the
- 10:41Speaker 4: way I heard.
- 10:42Speaker 7: It seems to me he went into a lot of trouble.
- 10:44Speaker 3: And sometimes the passengers give road agents as much fight
- 10:47Speaker 3: as the driver and messenger.
- 10:48Speaker 5: Chest do they feel safe because they're inside, And that's
- 10:51Speaker 5: what Chess Ryan figured. Are you going to arrest in Marshall?
- 10:56Speaker 3: I can't arrest a man without cause boding and may
- 10:58Speaker 3: be telling the truth, but I don't know that for sure.
- 11:01Speaker 3: I can check on the zimmer when we get to
- 11:03Speaker 3: Fort Donner, but I can doo the lens. Keep an
- 11:05Speaker 3: eye on well.
- 11:06Speaker 4: This stage will be robb long before it gets to
- 11:08Speaker 4: Fort Downer.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Marshall, Yeah, it maybe, but not without a fight. Thanks
- 11:14Speaker 3: for telling me about rain for your sake. I hope
- 11:15Speaker 3: it's the truth. If it isn't, you're going to be
- 11:18Speaker 3: in more trouble than the iron. Now, all right, keep
- 11:21Speaker 3: an eye on him Chester. I'll be back in a
- 11:23Speaker 3: few minutes.
- 11:32Speaker 4: Very much.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Yeah, out here a minute, will you?
- 11:39Speaker 5: What's up? Mister?
- 11:40Speaker 4: I want to talk to you, that's all alone. Come
- 11:44Speaker 4: on outside.
- 11:46Speaker 12: Be right back, Hank, say something that whiskey for me.
- 11:57Speaker 12: What's on your mind?
- 11:58Speaker 5: Mister?
- 11:58Speaker 3: How long you've been an express messenger Berryman? Two years?
- 12:03Speaker 3: Not that it's any business of yours. You run into
- 12:05Speaker 3: any trouble in that time?
- 12:07Speaker 5: Some why?
- 12:09Speaker 3: I just want to know if you can handle yourself.
- 12:11Speaker 5: And so you want to find out.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Look, Berryman, you know my name. It's Dylan. I'm Matt Dlan.
- 12:21Speaker 3: I'm the US Marshal out of Dodge, Dylan Dylan. Yeah,
- 12:27Speaker 3: I think I remember seeing you there.
- 12:29Speaker 5: Good. Now tell me this.
- 12:31Speaker 3: You carrying much in that treasure box of yours.
- 12:35Speaker 12: The messenger who brought it as far as pond Crick
- 12:38Speaker 12: said it was fifty thousand dollars unsigned currency, mostly something
- 12:43Speaker 12: up myself.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Well, maybe tell me what's the best place for a
- 12:47Speaker 3: hold up between here and Fort Donner.
- 12:50Speaker 12: Well will it bend? I expect man and a horse
- 12:54Speaker 12: could keep hidden it. We were right on top of him,
- 12:57Speaker 12: all right.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Tell the driver to whip those horses through. Will have
- 12:59Speaker 3: been as fast as they will go. Chester will be
- 13:02Speaker 3: on the roof to help you, and I'll start to
- 13:03Speaker 3: organize the passengers inside.
- 13:05Speaker 5: Well, no, if there's going to be a hold.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Up, Marshall, Well, I don't know, I don't know, but.
- 13:09Speaker 5: We'll play it safe.
- 13:10Speaker 3: And by the way, Berman, don't let on inside there
- 13:14Speaker 3: about this, huh or who I am?
- 13:18Speaker 5: All right?
- 13:19Speaker 3: Okay, Marshall, thank you, good night BERMANO night Marsall. Oh Marshall, Yeah,
- 13:28Speaker 3: we gotta jug a station whiskey inside if you want
- 13:30Speaker 3: to drink. I don't think it'll do much good. I've
- 13:35Speaker 3: heard of that stuff freezing solid on a cool night.
- 13:57Speaker 2: We will return for the second act of gun Smoke
- 13:59Speaker 2: and just moment, but first, backing up the great CBS
- 14:03Speaker 2: Radio news team. Election Night will be UNIFAC, the new
- 14:06Speaker 2: electric brain, operating for the first time to bring you faster,
- 14:10Speaker 2: more accurate, more complete Election Night totals. November fourth, Starting
- 14:14Speaker 2: at eight pm New York time, CBS Radio reports the
- 14:17Speaker 2: election returns from coast to coast. Make CBS Radio your
- 14:21Speaker 2: election headquarters to hear the trends, the color, and the
- 14:24Speaker 2: mounting tide.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Of results reported by Edward R.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Murrow, Lowell Thomas, and the rest of the same great
- 14:29Speaker 2: CBS Radio team that made Convention reporting history earlier this year.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Now the second act of gun Smoke.
- 14:55Speaker 3: Next morning, just after sun up the stage left monument station.
- 14:59Speaker 3: It was ten miles to will A Bend and twelve
- 15:02Speaker 3: miles to the next change of horses at a small
- 15:04Speaker 3: swing station run by a lone stock tender.
- 15:08Speaker 5: Zimmer or Chess Rhyme, if that's who he was.
- 15:12Speaker 3: Seemed nervous, too nervous for an experienced road agent.
- 15:16Speaker 4: But maybe he had figured me for what I was,
- 15:19Speaker 4: and I gave him the jumps anyway.
- 15:22Speaker 5: I sat next to him so I can.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Handle him faster if and when the turn came, we
- 15:28Speaker 3: drove at an easy pace until we neared the bend,
- 15:32Speaker 3: and then the driver popped his whip over the teams
- 15:34Speaker 3: and I began to run higher, but suddenly he was
- 15:38Speaker 3: pulling them in and breaking on the side.
- 15:42Speaker 1: One moved by.
- 15:43Speaker 3: Zimmer at that point, and I'd killed crippled again.
- 15:46Speaker 6: What are we stopping it? Hey? Trove it? What's up?
- 15:50Speaker 8: We'd been dragging?
- 15:51Speaker 13: Couldn't compete a pool?
- 15:54Speaker 3: All right?
- 15:54Speaker 8: Everybody out?
- 15:55Speaker 6: What's tight it? Trove? What's wrong?
- 15:57Speaker 8: Will you stuck and pull it off? With you in there? Car?
- 16:00Speaker 1: Hurry it out?
- 16:03Speaker 4: Drinks get over there by Chestnor. Don't you worry about me.
- 16:06Speaker 5: You keep an eye on RD. Go on now, come on, alright,
- 16:12Speaker 5: what do you think, Dylan?
- 16:14Speaker 3: They us jumped us by now berryman while everybody was
- 16:17Speaker 3: still inside.
- 16:18Speaker 5: But keep your head up anyway. You watch the other
- 16:21Speaker 5: side of the coach. I'll stay here.
- 16:23Speaker 6: Okay, it wasn't grease.
- 16:29Speaker 4: Why not?
- 16:30Speaker 9: Sizzling hot have to cool before we can take it off.
- 16:33Speaker 9: That drunken fool of monument didn't grease this one.
- 16:35Speaker 5: That's all.
- 16:36Speaker 10: Take a bull whip to him when I get back there.
- 16:39Speaker 6: Well, you can grease, now, can't you.
- 16:41Speaker 10: I could, mister, if I had any grease?
- 16:44Speaker 9: I mean, you haven't got any unless I render you
- 16:46Speaker 9: down and make sen I get out of my way.
- 16:48Speaker 4: Well, hey, more of that than I'll.
- 16:52Speaker 5: All right, I forget it. What are we gonna do?
- 16:55Speaker 5: How about grass driver? Hey, that's an idea.
- 16:58Speaker 3: Wrapping around the spindle and go it a little where's out.
- 17:01Speaker 3: It won't last long, but we can keep putting it
- 17:03Speaker 3: on until we get to the next station.
- 17:05Speaker 13: Be all day, stop for ever half mile. Why don't
- 17:09Speaker 13: you green orange? Ask a real man?
- 17:12Speaker 10: All right, pop, how are we gonna fix it?
- 17:15Speaker 8: Cheese cheese, cheezee?
- 17:19Speaker 6: I weren't fine too?
- 17:20Speaker 5: Yeah it might at that.
- 17:21Speaker 10: I suppose you brought some cheese along just in case.
- 17:24Speaker 6: Pop I brought it along to eat. I'll let you
- 17:28Speaker 6: have it.
- 17:29Speaker 2: In my carpet bag.
- 17:38Speaker 5: Against cheese worked fine.
- 17:40Speaker 3: And we left will have been without more trouble. I
- 17:43Speaker 3: began to figure Boudery for a liar, but he just
- 17:46Speaker 3: sat there staring out at the prairie said nothing. A
- 17:51Speaker 3: few miles further on, as we have put the swing station,
- 17:54Speaker 3: I heard a shot from the messenger, and then.
- 17:56Speaker 5: Bowdery pointed ahead. I leaned up to take a look.
- 18:00Speaker 3: The station was a small, one room adobe huts with
- 18:03Speaker 3: the usual corral at the rear, but there wasn't a
- 18:06Speaker 3: horse in sight, and out of the two windows facing
