- 0:00Welcome to the Yukon Football Coach you show Mike Christino with every Tuesday with Jim
- 0:04Moore as the Huskies get set to take on Boston College of an alumni Stadium
- 0:09twelve noon on a Saturday. Coach, thanks for the time. This has
- 0:14been an interesting season, to say the least, one in six I haven't
- 0:19won it the rent yet, but I got to tell you these games are
- 0:22exciting. I mean, I can't be a fan because I'm a broadcaster,
- 0:25but I had to say when you got four losses by total of eighteen points,
- 0:30games could have gone either way. This could be a whole different scenario
- 0:33we're talking about, but it's not so. I guess the question we start
- 0:38with is how do you build on what's been happening so far in this season
- 0:42for Yukon Football. Well, you're right, could have would have should it?
- 0:49You know? I think the only thing you can do in a situation
- 0:52like this is is keep grinding, keep working, recommit every day, and
- 1:00as a coach to find for your players what that means. You know,
- 1:04a lot of people say we just got to win a game, We just
- 1:06got to recommit, we just got to try harder. But I think it
- 1:10goes so much deeper than that. You got to teach them how to try
- 1:11harder, What does that mean, What does that look like to try harder,
- 1:15to be more detailed, and so we spell that out in great detail.
- 1:19I think the other thing is that you have to while understanding the reality
- 1:25of this situation, you have to point out the positives. You know,
- 1:30the last two weeks or the last two games that we've had, the opposing
- 1:34coach has come up to me after the game and made a very strong point
- 1:38to me about how hard our team plays on film and on in person,
- 1:44and that that's a that's a you know, that's that's something that we're after.
- 1:49If we keep doing that, and we keep working hard, and we
- 1:52pay attention to the details, and we keep putting our players or trying to
- 1:55put our players in the best position to play and have success, we will
- 2:00have a breakthrough. We are a much better football team than our record indicates,
- 2:06but we are what our record indicates as well. So you know,
- 2:10you ask these young men to stay focused. I think you impress upon them
- 2:14the lessons that they're learning that are going to help them down the road,
- 2:16not only on the football field, but in life as well. When you
- 2:20go through through things like this, because you and I we're older, older
- 2:23gentlemen. You much older than me, but we're older gentlemen, we understand
- 2:30that. You know, life is full of adversity and roadblocks and twists and
- 2:35turns and the roads always winding uphill. And these guys don't know that yet.
- 2:38And you know because of your success, and I know because I've you
- 2:42know, been around some successful peoples, that the road's never easy, and
- 2:47so embrace the hard growth comes. Growth, growth comes in the most difficult
- 2:53times in your life. And so we talk a lot about that. We
- 2:57do, We just do. I'm very honest with these guys, you know,
- 2:59very very very very transparent. That's one of the things I think is
- 3:02one of your strengths, too, is that you've been through a lot,
- 3:07You've had a lot of success, you've had adversity, so you can tell
- 3:09you can speak to the stuff legit. And I wonder when you do talk
- 3:15about that, when you use the word adversity to your players, does it
- 3:19get through? Do guys get it? Do they understand it's gonna be hard.
- 3:23You said this last year and it worked, but it's hard to win
- 3:27on any level and any sport. So, guys, we ain't winning right
- 3:30now, but we're doing the things required for us to win. Is that
- 3:35kind of the message you have to bring We're doing well. I hope it's
- 3:38getting through Mike, and I think it's certainly getting through to some of them.
- 3:43But that's consistency of message, because eventually it gets through, right,
- 3:46you just keep hammering it that rock and hammering it and eventually it cracks.
- 3:51So and I'm not calling them rocks. I'm just saying that that concept.
- 3:54So, yeah, I continually talk about it and not a you got to
- 4:00teach them how to handle adversity, you know, like what mindset they have
- 4:03to have and what earth work ethic and what attitude they got to carry into
- 4:08it. It's not enough to say we got to overcome adversity. I just
- 4:11think those are empty words. So I really try to work hard at that.
- 4:15Sunday nights we meet, we don't meet, We have dinner, we
- 4:19have a team dinner, and I usually talk. My wife started calling at
- 4:24my Sunday night sermon. That's when I usually try to hit them with,
- 4:29you know, kind of a message that's bigger than just the game. But
- 4:32it's based on the game, you know, based on what happened the previous
- 4:36day, but maybe has implications for the rest of their lives. But it's
- 4:42no hard. But you know, you said we're doing things to win the
- 4:46games, we're not winning the games. So that means we're doing most of
- 4:48the things to win the game. We're not doing enough to win the game.
- 4:50Like you look back at this game that we just had last week,
- 4:56and we played hard, right, we played hard, but there was way
- 5:02too many missed opportunities, you know, and we can we can talk about
- 5:06them. I think everybody this listening probably saw them. But we dropped three
- 5:12interceptions, right, we dropped six passes. We turned the ball over four
- 5:18times. So the fact that we're even in that game is you know,
- 5:23almost a miracle, you know, and it's a testament to the way they
- 5:27they that how hard they play, the effort they play with. But we
- 5:30have to capitalize on opportunities, and we have to create opportunities with the effort
- 5:35we play with. And so it's just asking them every week to come back
- 5:41and recommit, and they do it, and if they keep doing that,
- 5:44then eventually this program will have the breakthrough that we're all looking looking for.
- 5:48And that's like a perpetual breakthrough, you know, not a one year breakthrough.
- 5:53Yeah you kind of well, prior to your arrival you kind of won
- 5:57four games in three years. You've got seven wins here to you and a
- 6:00half anyway, so you're going in the right direction. But it's a week
- 6:03two week deal. And everybody, you know, has a bottom line.
- 6:06And I hear from Housekeep fans all the time, what happened we had that
- 6:12game, We're up twenty one to ten. We should have won this and
- 6:15that. And obviously they're fans. They're going to get crazy passionate about what
- 6:18you're doing. And I appreciate that. With you come to why, Yes,
- 6:23we want if they don't care, they don't care, you want to
- 6:26be exactly, and if you want if they're passionate and they question things and
- 6:30they I mean even if they're pissed. Man, I'd rather have that than
- 6:33not have anything. You know, Like we haven't had many people at the
- 6:38rent. You know, we got to win them back, you know.
- 6:42I love I want passion. I want I want them to be pissed when
- 6:45we lose, and I want to be happy when we win. And I
- 6:46want them to be interested, and you know, I want them to ask
- 6:49questions. I mean, I don't think some coaches like that. You know.
- 6:53Yeah, man, I'm craving it right now because I want I want
- 6:57people to embrace this program. Well that's why I'm here, by the way
- 7:00on Tuesdays to ask questions. I will be back with Jim More. We'll
- 7:04find out what's missing if there is such a thing in a football game.
- 7:10We're gonna talk about Malik Dixon Williams. He'll be visiting with Bob Joyce a
- 7:15little bit later on and Towey form Mea Brown as well on the show.
