- 0:01And a personal welcome from me. Welcome to Maranatha Conference
- 0:062024. Amen.
- 0:13Out of pure curiosity, I see so many familiar faces, but I am
- 0:17curious to know who might be here for the very first time.
- 0:21Can you lift your hand if you're here for the very first time?
- 0:24That's wonderful and I am aware that there are people here from
- 0:32all over the world. We have people here from Sydney,
- 0:36Australia. It's right.
- 0:40We have people here from Melbourne, Australia.
- 0:43Yes, we have people here from Canada.
- 0:48Yes, we have people here from Lebanon and we have people here
- 0:57from all around this glorious land, the United States of
- 1:00America, and of course, all the people from Chicago.
- 1:07How can I forget about this Chicago?
- 1:11Did I forget anybody else that I'm in California?
- 1:15All across the states? I don't want to start naming all
- 1:17the states, so I just want to make it a summary.
- 1:21Look, I got to tell you, my heart has been overflowing with
- 1:25Thanksgiving to God the past few weeks, especially today.
- 1:29I couldn't help it. It was just gushing, especially
- 1:32in my time before the service for many things.
- 1:35And the main thing is that oftentimes it's our disposition
- 1:38as humans to think just because we plan for things, pay for
- 1:42things, invest in things, that they will automatically succeed
- 1:46or that they will occur. But that's a great mistake
- 1:50because James tells us that even for those in the business world,
- 1:54you are to always keep in the forefront of your mind that it
- 1:56is the Lord's will. And even what you plan for
- 1:59tomorrow cannot be permitted, cannot be realized unless God
- 2:02wills it. And so I found myself thanking
- 2:05God for him allowing us, granting us the grace to be here
- 2:09for another year. It's it's a gift from him.
- 2:11Every good and perfect gift is from above.
- 2:14And I am also thankful to the Lord for all of you, for those
- 2:18who are sacrificing and serving to make this weekend possible,
- 2:21for those who've traveled from so far to be here.
- 2:23But also because every year we pray fully as a church and
- 2:28people from different churches, we pray to hear from God for
- 2:32this weekend. That's the main reason for this.
- 2:34We're in a beautiful sight. We meet with beautiful people
- 2:37who love the Lord. But mainly we're here to meet
- 2:40with a beautiful Savior, with Christ.
- 2:42But we want to hear from him. The only way we can hear from
- 2:44Him is we ask for His voice. And so every year we seek the
- 2:47Lord and ask him, what would you want us to say?
- 2:49And he has been so good to us in the years past, including this
- 2:53year, to give us direction of where we ought to go in the Word
- 2:56of God so that we can experience him because we experience him in
- 2:59the Word of God. This book is alive.
- 3:02This book breathes because God is the author of it.
- 3:06And it's usually on this night where we kind of give people an
- 3:09indication of where we're headed for the rest of the weekend.
- 3:12And prayfully, what we will be discussing in our time together
- 3:15is about the life of the apostle Paul, the life of the apostle
- 3:19Paul. And it is my duty to give you
- 3:23the answer to why dedicating a conference entirely to the life
- 3:26of Paul. The man is a remarkable human
- 3:30being, remarkable. And not only is it remarkable
- 3:33because of his conversion, his calling, his towering intellect,
- 3:40his incredible, relentless faithfulness to the Lord, but
- 3:44he's an incredible human being because he has been called by
- 3:48God not just to be a transmitter of the doctrines that would be
- 3:53the foundation of the church. Because he's also been sought,
- 3:56set apart by the Holy Spirit to be a practical model for
- 4:01Christians of all ages. And that is not something that
- 4:06is inferred upon by some readers or commentators or theologians
- 4:10of the Bible. That is something that the
- 4:12apostle Paul was very conscious of and laid out as a standard in
- 4:17the Word of God as he was led by the Spirit of God.
- 4:22And so one of the most obvious verses that we all know by
- 4:25heart, specifically from one translation where Paul says what
- 4:28in First Corinthians 11/1. Follow me as I yeah, and the ESP
- 4:34would say be imitators of me as I imitate Christ.
- 4:36But I want to turn your attention briefly to another
- 4:39verse in First Corinthians chapter 4 and verse 16 where
- 4:43Paul says it in a different way. He says in First Corinthians
- 4:46416. I urge you, I urge you then be
- 4:51imitators of me. Now that word imitators in this
- 4:56verse and in First Corinthians 11/1 in the Greek is the Greek
- 5:00word mimet S where we get the English word mimic.
- 5:06And so essentially what Paul is calling for Christians to do is
- 5:10to copy him. Now, it would be erroneous and
- 5:15even dangerous to assume that what Paul is asking of believers
- 5:19is to try to be an apostle and to mirror his gifting and to try
- 5:25to force yourself into his calling.
- 5:28Wrong. Because the same Paul who said
- 5:31imitate me taught in First Corinthians 12 that we all, as
- 5:35members of one body, have been equipped with certain and unique
- 5:39gifts and callings. So then what does Paul mean when
- 5:43he says imitate me? He's speaking about
- 5:46transferable, imitatable attributes, affections, frame of
- 5:54mind, convictions that are really achievable for all of us
- 5:58who are in Christ. So he lived in a certain way.
- 6:02There were principles that he had adopted that the Holy Spirit
- 6:05energized him for, that we are to look at and say this is what
- 6:09God wants for my life, not just for Paul.
- 6:12And I want to point out that Paul says in this verse with
- 6:15urgency that we ought to study and we ought to pursue his way
- 6:21of life. He's urgent, I urge you.
- 6:25So this isn't optional. This isn't just for the VIP
- 6:28Christians. This isn't just for a select few
- 6:31who really want to be serious. This is the standard for all
- 6:33believers of all time. And you might think, well, isn't
- 6:37it strange for a any Christian really to ask other Christians
- 6:42to imitate them? Kind of feels awkward, doesn't
- 6:45it? Can you imagine somebody coming
- 6:47up here saying, I want you to imitate me?
- 6:50What would you think? This guy's kind of arrogant.
- 6:54I'm supposed to imitate Christ. Paul's really a spirit filled
- 6:59apostle, wouldn't he say? Look to Christ while he says
- 7:02that in other places? But the Spirit inspired him to
- 7:04say that, so he's not, he's not wrong.
- 7:08What is he saying in essence? Well, God knows that one of the
- 7:11ways in which we are very much helped in our practical
- 7:14sanctification is by putting before us real flesh and blood
- 7:19people who are walking in a worthy manner so that we can, as
- 7:23fellow fleshly human, say it's possible.
- 7:28It's possible then, is it not? Here's a man with a sinful
- 7:33nature like mine, a dreadful past, maybe even a more
- 7:37traumatic past, same temptations and problems.
- 7:40And yet he is able to walk in this way.
- 7:43And it's not because of his personality.
- 7:45It's not because strength that he has mustered up.
- 7:46It's not because of his own discipline.
- 7:48It's because of something else that he has touched and tasted.
- 7:50And whatever he's got, I want it.
- 7:53That's why God essentially put Paul before us in the
- 7:56Scriptures. Not so that you would be
- 7:58intimidated by Paul and excuse him off as an apostle, but that
- 8:02you would be inspired by him. He would say if it was possible
- 8:06for this terrorist to come to Christ and not just come to
- 8:09Christ, but to walk in this way for Christ, then surely the same
- 8:14Spirit who energized him can also animate me.
- 8:19And the Saint Paul who said imitate me shows that this
- 8:23invitation was an exclusive to himself.
- 8:25So again, you might feel like it seems strange for Paul to almost
- 8:30make this claim that he is our ultimate example, but he doesn't
- 8:33say that. Let me give you an example.
- 8:35So he tells the Thessalonians, for example, right?
- 8:37And 1st Thessalonians chapter 2, verse 14, he praises this
- 8:41church. He praises this church for their
- 8:43imitation, and not because they imitated him.
- 8:47This is what he says to this church.
- 8:48For you brothers became imitators, not of me, Paul, but
- 8:52of who? Of the churches of God in Christ
- 8:55Jesus that are in Judea. For you suffer the same things
- 8:59from your own countrymen as they did from the Jews.
- 9:03So here Paul, by his letter, is applauding the Thessalonians
- 9:07because they were walking in the same courage and steadfastness
- 9:11not of Paul, but of the churches in Judea.
- 9:15In other words, it is totally possible for any believer, or
- 9:20for any group of Christians in a local church setting to walk in
- 9:24a manner that is worthy of emulation.
- 9:28Here's what I'm trying to say. Paul is not making a claim that
- 9:31he has monopoly on inspiration. Anybody is capable, if they walk
- 9:38with the Lord, to cause others to want to walk in the same way.
- 9:43But the point of this time together is that Paul walked so
- 9:48intensely, so intimately with the Lord that he bids us to walk
- 9:55in His steps. Because if we do you ready for
- 9:58this, it comes with a reward. This is what stirred me because
- 10:06can I, can I say something? Studying Paul the past few weeks
- 10:09has been one of the most beautiful and painful
- 10:13experiences. See.
- 10:15What do you mean beautiful? Because again, you're seeing
- 10:18what God can do with a man who is yielded to him.
- 10:21Painful because when you get past the obvious things that you
- 10:26know about Paul from Sunday school or from surface level
- 10:29studies of him. It's just it stirs you what this
- 10:34man had in his heart what he did for other Christians, his
- 10:38intoxicating love for Christ. See past the fact that he's an
- 10:43apostle and realize that he was a man that was so enamoured with
- 10:46the gospel and you can't help but because the Bible is a
- 10:49mirror to look at yourself and say Lord do something in me.
- 10:52Please, please do something in me.
- 10:56It's been sobering that a lot of time of prayer studying Paul but
- 11:02Paul gave a promise, a staggering promise and I want
- 11:05you to see it. This, this is not a full sermon,
- 11:06by the way. This is just an introduction.
- 11:09So I want you to please, if there's any verse that you can
- 11:11turn to at this time as Philippians 49, look what Paul
- 11:14says here in Philippians 4/9. And this will answer why we
- 11:23should have this time together studying this man's life.
- 11:27Philippians 4/9 He says to this church, what you have learned
- 11:31and received and heard and seen in me.
- 11:36Practice these things and the God of peace will be with you.
- 11:42Can you imagine? Let me say this again.
- 11:43Can you imagine any man saying this to Christians?
- 11:48What you've seen, what you've heard, what you've learned,
- 11:52whatever you've seen in me, if you actually practice these
- 11:55things, you will unlock a certain blessing in your life.
- 11:59The God of peace will be with you.
- 12:02Now notice there's two things. We got a group here.
- 12:04What you've learned and received, that's one category.
- 12:07You know what that category is? His doctrine, his theology, his
- 12:11preaching. So he's saying my instruction,
- 12:15the authoritative Apostolic instruction, learn and receive.
- 12:18But not just that heard and seen.
- 12:20What's that? It's not theology.
- 12:22That's practice, that's conduct, that's attitude, that's outlook.
- 12:29That's how learn and receive lives out in flesh and blood.
- 12:34So what you've learned and received, that's one group, the
- 12:37Bible truth, but also what you've heard and seen in me.
- 12:43If you practice these things, the God of peace will be with
- 12:46you. Well, hold on.
- 12:46I thought God was with all of us.
- 12:49He is with all of us, if you're a true Christian.
- 12:51But you know what this means. Not every person who belongs to
- 12:54Christ experiences Christ the same way.
- 12:57That's what he means. If you walk in the way that I've
- 13:01walked, you will know a special relationship, dare I say
- 13:07experientially, with the God of peace.
- 13:12This taught me something. You know, I have people who ask
- 13:13sometimes, can you pray that I would have peace?
- 13:16Well, yeah. He says earlier, you know, that
- 13:18if anybody be anxious about anything, you know, do not be
- 13:20anxious, but by prayer and supplication with Thanksgiving,
- 13:23present your request to God. He says that earlier right
- 13:25before this, right, Why is it that some people who are praying
- 13:30for peace are not experiencing peace, at least the peace that
- 13:32God gives? Well, there's two reasons.
- 13:34Because earlier he says do not be anxious about anything, but
- 13:37in everything with prayer and supplication, present your
- 13:40requests with God to God. And then he talks about the
- 13:42peace of God guarding your hearts and minds in Christ
- 13:44Jesus, right? He says the peace of God.
- 13:49And then here he talks about the God of peace, not the peace of
- 13:53God, the God of peace. So one reason why there are
- 13:57people who want a peace from God don't have that peace is because
- 14:01they don't know the God of peace.
- 14:03So you're looking for something that can only come with
- 14:05relationship with God. And that's why this world is
- 14:08going cuckoo. They're trying to look for peace
- 14:11on every sphere, on every level, and they're not going to get it.
- 14:13You know why? Because you, you got to get the
- 14:15God of peace first. But there are also, I'm talking
- 14:19about Christians now who want the peace of God, but they're
- 14:22not getting it. They want a closer experience of
- 14:24the God of peace, but they're not getting it.
- 14:26Why? Well, you might.
- 14:27You can pray till you're blue in the face.
- 14:29You can have the godliest ministers lay hands on you and
- 14:32drown you in oil, and you're still not going to get it.
- 14:35Can I tell you why? Because if you pray about it,
- 14:38but you don't practice certain things, you'll never know it.
- 14:41So pray all you want, but you got to practice certain things
- 14:47and I want to present to you, though we can't do it in a whole
- 14:50weekend. Some ways in which Paul presents
- 14:53himself, what he taught, how we live.
- 14:56I can bring us that much closer to the God of peace.
- 14:59Here's where I'm ending, just even preparing just how to
- 15:03introduce this. I thought, Lord, I want to
- 15:05imitate. I want to imitate this man, not
- 15:08because Paul had certain principles that were exclusive
- 15:11to him, things that he conjured up, because the ways of Paul
- 15:14were the ways of Christ, the ways of Christ, right?
- 15:19This is the idea. So he's not putting a fair, say,
- 15:21close spotlight on him because he has low self esteem and he
- 15:24wants some kind of approval. He wants some kind of adulation.
- 15:28No, he's saying I'm walking in the ways of Christ.
- 15:31All I'm doing is just obeying what he's saying.
- 15:33And you have a model for you in me.
- 15:37And here's how I want to try to imitate.
- 15:42Paul says something remarkable as a preacher, as an apostle, he
- 15:46said this and and this is really my prayer, my prayer for this
- 15:49time. He says in 2nd Corinthians 124,
- 15:53you don't have to turn there, Just listen to these words.
- 15:57If you're a leader in any capacity here, especially within
- 15:59the church, recognize what Paul says here because it's a model
- 16:03for ministers. He says, not that we lorded over
- 16:06your faith, but we work with you for your joy for you.
- 16:15Stand firm in your faith. You know what a true minister
- 16:19does. He preaches, he counsels, he
- 16:21prays, he lives, he exemplifies, he serves with the ultimate goal
- 16:27of glorifying God and close to it, for the joy of God's people.
- 16:33What an amazing standard for ministers and what an exciting
- 16:37thing for those who are called to be under leadership in the
- 16:41church. Glorious things can happen when
- 16:44you have a leadership that says we're here for your joy and when
- 16:48the people who are under that leadership believe it, believe
- 16:51it. Maranatha Conference 2024 in
- 16:56light of preaching on this topic is for your joy, for your joy.
- 17:01I, I love God's Providence so much.
- 17:03So you're going to hear about it at least in one of these
- 17:05sessions. Sessions.
- 17:07So I'm reading the book of Isaiah, just personally not
- 17:10sermon prep, not preparing meals for other people, meals for this
- 17:15soul here, right? And I stumble upon this.
- 17:18This is the last verse tonight because I want you to have faith
- 17:21for your joy. It's an Isaiah 29 verse 19.
- 17:26And this is one to actually highlight.
- 17:27I would recommend it. Isaiah 29, verse 19.
- 17:31Look what God says about joy. The meek, that's the humble, the
- 17:38lowly, the meek. Look at this phrase.
- 17:41I got so excited when I read it was two days ago.
- 17:44The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the Lord.
- 17:51Isn't that a glorious phrase? Fresh joy, That's just joy.
- 17:58Not joy from yesterday, Not joy from when you got saved.
- 18:01Fresh, fresh joy. Other transitions would say will
- 18:05increase in joy. So reading that two days ago I
- 18:12said that's going to be my prayer point for this weekend.
- 18:15Here's my prayer, our prayer for every person here that you would
- 18:18know fresh joy, fresh joy only in one container though, in the
- 18:24Lord. It's going to be in the Lord for
- 18:27the Lord from the Lord. So even Paul, who says we're
- 18:30working for your joy, a minister, a preacher, a praise
- 18:34team, a godly St. that you know can work with you for your joy,
- 18:40but they can't give you joy. There's a giver of joy that they
- 18:44point you to with truths that you sing about and truths that
- 18:48you hear preached about and counselled about.
- 18:51He's the giver of fresh joy. He grants it.
- 18:55Now, can you read that and actually think to yourself, this
- 18:57is theoretical. This is no, it's real.
- 19:00You'll, you'll know it, you'll taste it, you'll taste it.
- 19:04And I am convinced that this man who said he worked for the joy
- 19:09of God's people, as we examine him, as we study, as we consider
- 19:12his ways, we're going to know fresh joy.
- 19:15We're going to know real fresh joy that you would leave here,
- 19:18not just full with this joy, but spilling over so that somebody
- 19:22else can taste it, wherever you come from, even Australia.
- 19:26So here's how we're going to, and I'm going to ask the praise
- 19:28team to come up. I'm going to ask us to just ask
- 19:34the Lord, Lord, please help us know fresh joy as we come to
- 19:38study this man's life that you've placed with and before us
- 19:46and believe that wherever you come from, whatever circumstance
- 19:49you're returning to, whatever country your citizenship lies
- 19:53in, that you would return with a supernatural fresh joy.
- 19:58Can we pray that together let's do it?
- 20:09Lord, we thank you that You have something in store for us this
- 20:14weekend. We believe it with all of our
- 20:15hearts. Lord, if there would be
- 20:19anything, a cheap substitute, a sinful substitute that would try
- 20:23to convince us that it has joy to offer.
- 20:26Lord, we pray that tonight it would die.
- 20:29It would shrivel up and lose its grip on us.
- 20:32Instead, Lord, we pray that we would all, each of us in here,
- 20:35especially, Lord, in these tumultuous times, these dark
- 20:38times, disappointing times, we pray that we would know a fresh
- 20:44joy. And so, Lord, with every sermon
- 20:47about the apostle Paul, may there be no condemnation.
- 20:51May there be no sense of intimidation.
- 20:53Lord, if anything, may we sense the glorious invitation of a way
- 20:57of life that will allow us to walk closer with the God of
- 21:00peace. So, Lord, we pray that our faith
- 21:03would grow strong for the rest of this weekend, that we would
- 21:05come with hunger and thirst, and that you would meet it.
- 21:08Though we love you and we want to honor you because we believe
- 21:10that you are here with us and that you'll be here with us for
- 21:13the rest of this time. In Jesus name we pray.
- 21:16Amen. Amen.
- 21:18Let's stand in worship.
