- 2:56Sunny mornings send you.
- 2:59Well folks, it's now time for a new segment.
- 3:03We've reached out to some local sports fans to have them share their thoughts on the state
- 3:08of the union.
- 3:10And today we have a guest contributor, Danny from Cape Cod.
- 3:15Here's what Danny has to say about a few things concerning Red Sox Nation.
- 3:20His article is titled, John Henry and the Red Sox, a fan's lament.
- 3:26You're a lifelong Sox fan as, I am, no doubt you've been disappointed, to say the least,
- 3:32with John Henry and the Red Sox ownership for a while.
- 3:37And now the frustrations are starting to boil over as they've been percolating since 2022.
- 3:44We all know they finished last place in three of the last four years.
- 3:50And the reason?
- 3:51They just don't want to spend money for elite or even just good players.
- 3:57But did this new cash-strapped approach just start a couple of years ago?
- 4:03Not really.
- 4:05Like John Lester, for example.
- 4:07You'll recall the Sox offered him what was considered a laughable contract back in 2014,
- 4:14laughable because it was so low.
- 4:17Then they traded him at the deadline that year for a bag of balls, and he eventually
- 4:22signed a contract with the Cubs in 2015.
- 4:26The very next year, he went on to help the Cubs win their first World Series title since
- 4:311908.
- 4:32That year, Lester was 19-5 with a 2.44 earned run average, the second best of his 20-year
- 4:41career.
- 4:42That accomplishment earned him a spot as an All-Star, one of two nominations he received
- 4:48with the Cuvvies.
- 4:49Good for you, John.
- 4:52And if that wasn't bad enough, he'd been a fan favorite with the Sox, and it was really
- 4:57hard to see him go.
- 4:59But that didn't make any difference to Red Sox ownership.
- 5:03Henry just wouldn't pay him what he was worth, so the Boston fans suffered.
- 5:09And Lester is just one example.
- 5:12There's the Mookie Betts' blunder and the Zander Bogart's botched negotiations to add
- 5:17in the mix.
- 5:19I still can't believe we lost those All-Stars as well.
- 5:24So maybe Henry just can't afford to pay these guys.
- 5:28I don't think so.
- 5:31Henry and his group paid $380 million for the Red Sox back in 2002.
- 5:38And today, the Sox are worth an estimated $4.5 billion.
- 5:45And John Henry's personal net worth?
- 5:49Over $5 billion.
- 5:51Whether the Sox win or lose this year, John Henry and the Fenway Sports Group just gotta
- 5:56go.
- 5:58And to end on a positive note, it's been rumored that Theo Epstein is back in town
- 6:03to help broker a sale of the Sox.
- 6:05Fingers crossed.
- 6:07Danny loves the idea of a sale.
- 6:15Now on to sports.
- 6:17On the first day of the 88th Masters, despite a rain delay, Bryson DeChambeau and Scotty
- 6:23Scheffler stole the show.
- 6:26DeChambeau, known for his bold claims about Augusta National, delivered his career best
- 6:32at the course shooting a 65, showcasing a significant improvement in his putting.
- 6:38Scotty Scheffler, just one stroke behind, played a boaty-free round, exemplifying his
- 6:44mastery with a particularly strong performance in approach shots and short game.
- 6:50The day highlighted not just individuals, but also hinted at emerging storylines, such
- 6:57as Danny Willett's unexpected comeback and Max Homa's strong start, setting the stage
- 7:02for a compelling tournament.
- 7:06In local sports, the Red Sox are on a bit of a streak, a losing streak that is, as they
- 7:13lost another one at home against the Orioles, 9-4.
- 7:18Not helping themselves out, the Celtics at home lost to the Knicks, 118-109.
- 7:25Tonight the Sox are at home again to take on the Angels.
- 7:30And the Celtics are at home again to play the Hornets.
- 7:35In top news, in the high-stakes world of professional golf, a pivotal lawsuit marked a turning point
- 7:42in the PGA Tour and live golf rivalry.
- 7:46Initially, live golf launched an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour, challenging
- 7:52exclusivity practices that restricted players' participation in other events.
- 7:58However, in a stunning development, live golf agreed to drop this lawsuit as part of a framework
- 8:05agreement where the Saudi Public Investment Fund would become a minority investor in a
- 8:10new venture, PGA Tour Enterprises.
- 8:14This agreement suggested a potential bribe.
- 8:22Excuse me, got a tickle in my throat.
- 8:25I meant to say reconciliation, aiming to merge interests and stabilize the sport.
- 8:32The resolution of this lawsuit was not just a legal maneuver, but a strategic play towards
- 8:37transforming and possibly unifying professional golf under shared interests and governance.
- 8:46In business news, Meta and Google are advancing into AI technology by announcing their own
- 8:53in-house AI chips, challenging NVIDIA's dominance in the AI hardware market.
- 9:00These new chips are designed to support their AI platforms more efficiently, reducing reliance
- 9:06on external chip manufacturers like NVIDIA and Intel.
- 9:11This move is seen as a strategic effort to tailor hardware to specific AI models, improving
- 9:17performance and energy efficiency.
- 9:20While NVIDIA remains a key player in the AI chip market, the development of custom chips
- 9:26by tech giants like Meta and Google could reshape the competitive landscape, raising
- 9:32questions about NVIDIA's future market position.
- 9:37In crypto movement, Bitcoin is $71,000.
- 9:41Ethereum is at $3,500.
- 9:45And Solana is $175.
- 9:51Moving on to a more local vibe.
- 9:53In our community spotlight on health and wellness, we are working with a national Pilates studio
- 10:00to bring you some free classes, so listen up.
- 10:04Check out Club Pilates with several locations in the Boston area.

- 10:21So now you can check out Club Pilates for a free class with locations in Canton, Wellesley,
- 10:27Pangam, Brookline, and Framingham.
- 10:31Just be sure to tell them, Sunny Morning sent you by.
- 10:35And now, back to the show.
- 10:39Let's talk science.
- 10:41The Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research Reactor, also known as K-Star, has
- 10:47made a significant breakthrough in fusion energy by extending plasma containment to
- 10:5348 seconds, surpassing its previous record by 60%.
- 10:58This achievement is crucial for magnetic confinement fusion, where one of the main challenges is
- 11:04maintaining plasma long enough for fusion reactions to occur.
- 11:09The improvement was made possible by using advanced materials, such as a new tungsten
- 11:14diverter and optimization models to manage plasma instabilities.
- 11:20This progress brings us closer to the dream of sustainable fusion energy, especially as
- 11:25the global community anticipates the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, reaching
- 11:31its first plasma by late 2025.
- 11:35To put it simply, it's a star, or sun in a bottle, and has the potential to surpass
- 11:41our nuclear energy generation significantly.
- 11:44And in entertainment news…
- 11:50In an interesting Rolling Stones article, Walton Goggins, known for his roles in The
- 11:55Shield, Quentin Tarantino's films, and The Righteous Gemstones, discusses his acting
- 12:01career and his new jewel role in Amazon's Fallout.
- 12:07Goggins reflects on being typecast early on and the evolution of his career, including
- 12:12the significant impact of The Shield.
- 12:16He shares insights into his process of finding humanity in his characters, his introverted
- 12:21nature despite his rascally on-screen persona, and the challenges of transitioning after
- 12:27a major role ends.
- 12:29Goggins also touches on his experience playing Baby Billy in The Righteous Gemstones, and
- 12:35the possibility of reprising his role as Boyd Crowder in future Justified projects.
- 12:41Personally, my favorite character is Boyd Crowder.
- 12:45That guy just had a special way with words.
- 12:48Well, alrighty folks, it's time for the quote of the day.
- 12:54And today, our quote comes from a man who was pivotal in commanding key victories during
- 13:00the American Civil War as a lieutenant general, and the 13th President of the United States,
- 13:07Ulysses S. Granset.
- 13:09If we ever have another contest, in the near future of our national existence, I predict
- 13:16that the dividing line will not be Mason and Dixons.
- 13:21But between patriotism and intelligence on the one side, and superstition, ambition,
- 13:27and ignorance on the other.
- 13:30And that's a wrap for this morning.
