- 0:39But I wasn't real, authentic. And what did it cost me?

- 1:48your own heart. So let's jump in.
- 1:57Welcome back. My name is Les
- 2:01Paul Klein, and you have stepped
- 2:06into my podcast called Live for.
- 2:12This is the seventh installment
- 2:17of the very first season I've ever shared
- 2:21my story in a podcast format.
- 2:26And I just want to step
- 2:31lightly this morning.
- 2:34And this particular subject,
- 2:39the masks that we wear and
- 2:44why do we hide behind it?
- 2:47I was born in a little town in Texas up near Panhandle.
- 2:53Probably doesn't matter if I tell you when you hit a little
- 2:57town called Canadian Texas and
- 3:01not that was the local Fundamental Independent
- 3:06Baptist preacher.
- 3:09And we lived in a house that
- 3:15was six feet from the church building. And I was born.
- 3:20Later in life, we moved to a
- 3:24house on the very next piece of property.
- 3:32My parents had already had
- 3:36two older children. If you've followed my podcast,
- 3:41if you remember that phrase, I've remembered.
- 3:45It was. It has an indelible memory in my brain.
- 3:51They said we had the first two were failed. So we've had two more.
- 3:55Here's our preacher boys, my younger brother,
- 3:59and they're preacher boys. But I
- 4:04was born on July 4, 1959, in Hinckville
- 4:08County Hospital. And unbeknownst
- 4:13to me, this is the story that I get from my sister.
- 4:21Dad had asked my older brother and sister for
- 4:27suggestions for my first name because my middle name's gonna be one that
- 4:31was set. That's what my dad. They suggested.
- 4:35Wesley. Wesley.
- 4:38Okay.
- 4:41But the first recollection of
- 4:48what I was Given and how it impacted
- 4:53my life. So when I went to school in the first
- 4:57grade and the teacher uses your full
- 5:01name, and my first name wasn't Wesley, it was
- 5:05Leslie. Okay.
- 5:11I can't tell you the
- 5:16pain and the anguish that
- 5:20I got from my
- 5:24classmates because that's
- 5:28a girl's name. In those days,
- 5:32in the 60s, that was a girl's name. It's kind
- 5:35of like a boy named Sue.
- 5:39That's about that time that song came out.
- 5:45You know, I have endured through
- 5:50childhood and my teen years,
- 5:54ending all this amount of pain because my
- 5:58first name was Leslie. It became a mask.
- 6:02If there was a mask that get settled into my
- 6:06world on who I really was,
- 6:11that's the moment that I can put content
- 6:16to it. For me today at 66 years old.
- 6:22So here I am. I've got less
- 6:32This preacher who was a cowboy. And gosh,
- 6:40there's so much. Suffice it to say
- 6:44that I wore that mask for
- 6:49a lot of years. I never used my first movie.
- 6:53Never bribe them. And it was always
- 6:58a point of shame.
- 7:03There was a point in my life,
- 7:07business took a classic shift.
- 7:12I left the large corporate company and
- 7:16launched my own business.
- 7:20And in doing so, had the help of
- 7:23marketing friend who suggested
- 7:29I name my company Les Klein,
- 7:32use that first name because
- 7:37now in today's culture, it's very accepted.
- 7:41And so I embraced it for the first time in my life and as
- 7:45you can see,
- 7:49plugged into me in any way, shape or form. That's what
- 7:54I needed. That was my mask. I got
- 7:58into this fight a couple of times over in high school
- 8:02over my name being Leslie. I got punched
- 8:08in grade school because my name is Leslie. Just a little sissy.
- 8:15Oh, my gosh. So the mask
- 8:20that I wore became this Persona
- 8:24of I'm this tough guy. And there
- 8:30was this turmoil internally.
- 8:39And people saw me for what I. Well, I was. I wasn't
- 8:43hiding from them. I was really hiding from myself. I really
- 8:48was. And I had to prove to myself,
- 8:52right, wrong or indifferent, that I wasn't a sissy,
- 8:56that I wasn't weak, strong.
- 8:59So I did things that
- 9:04in my own mind was proving that I'm not
- 9:08sissy. That was the word that was used.
- 9:12And, well,
- 9:16the ultimate was when they pinned a
- 9:20badge on my chest and I took a post and my.
- 9:26My dad said this. He said, these things are tough. They're gun
- 9:30in your badge. Pray your hand here. My uniform.
- 9:35Well, I'll never forget that.
- 9:39Well, truthfully, I was wearing a mask then, hiding from who
- 9:43I was Because I still had not accepted the
- 9:47fact of who I really was. I'm telling you, it took an entire
- 9:51lifetime to get to this place.
- 9:56But we learn as children to
- 10:00protect ourselves. And truthfully, you can call me Sissy
- 10:05because I have a girl's name. Will literally
- 10:10force you inside to protect yourself.
- 10:14I'm not a. Okay, I'm not gonna.
- 10:25Was strong,
- 10:32Was solid, and it
- 10:37allowed a level peace.
- 10:40I was performing. Wasn't who I am,
- 10:44but I was performing. And you ever
- 10:47done that? Hide behind that mask? Yeah.
- 10:51Never once letting that mask
- 10:56come off. Ever been to a masquerade
- 11:01party and everybody wears a mask? You don't know who people
- 11:05are. Hey, that's the way a lot of people,
- 11:08I mean, a lot of people, the majority of people, have lived their entire
- 11:13life. This is who the public sees.
- 11:17And over here, those who were intimate with,
- 11:21they know who we are. They know the bad of us. They know
- 11:26our loss. It's really hard
- 11:29to let the mask come off.
- 11:34So here's some things that I want you to think about.
- 11:38And the reason we keep these masks way into adulthood,
- 11:43it. It's safe. We've created safety. I created a
- 11:47safe zone around me.
- 11:54I literally was predictable. You know,
- 11:59steady as she goes, a rock.
- 12:05I was accepted. I was in a world that I
- 12:09was accepted. So it was safe to
- 12:13become a preacher, because in the culture that my
- 12:17parents had brought me up in and the things they chose for
- 12:21me, that was safe. It was predictable.
- 12:25And not that I liked it, but it was predictable.
- 12:29I was accepted. And I.
- 12:33By doing those things that they wanted me to do,
- 12:37I avoided rejection, and I re. Avoided rejection from them.
- 12:41And I had my mask up the whole time
- 12:45as I was a kid and into adulthood and even into
- 12:50my marriage. But there was that day,
- 12:53standing in that auditorium, you heard me say this more than once. If you've
- 12:58been listening to my podcast. There was a. That day that
- 13:02happened when I realized, I can't do this anymore.
- 13:06I can't pretend anymore. This mask,
- 13:10I didn't know what that meant then, but today I can put
- 13:14words to it. The mask began to come off.
- 13:19Okay, here's the emotional cough.
- 13:23A living in that format.
- 13:27I was never fully seen for who I was.
- 13:31Leslie Paul. Yeah. And truthfully,
- 13:36I was exhausted pretending to be something that
- 13:40my parents wanted me to be. And it was
- 13:44unknown. People really didn't know who I was.
- 13:48I was this Baptist preacher.
- 13:52I'll never forget this. We very cutting
- 13:57edge of churches
- 14:01in church growth,
- 14:04where the Baptist name began
- 14:09to be removed and everything Starts on the west coast,
- 14:12it comes across the country. So I'll never forget this.
- 14:17I had a good friend I had gone to college
- 14:20with. He was in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
- 14:24Carlsbad, California. Excuse me.
- 14:27And he had started this new church,
- 14:33and I started the room that I pastored in Las
- 14:38Vegas. He didn't begin
- 14:41with the Baptist name, and I was impressed. And I
- 14:46plugged myself into him. As it turns out, he was plugged into John Maxwell.
- 14:51And later on, he. He actually was on the staff.
- 14:55With. John Maxwell's church down in San Diego. And this was
- 14:59long before John Maxwell became who John Maxwell is today.
- 15:03So I literally had full access to John Maxwell in those
- 15:07days. It was really cool. I didn't know what I had, but I remember
- 15:11Larry in the old groove of
- 15:16doing everything non traditional.
- 15:20Yeah. There's no Baptist name. There's no Sunday
- 15:24night church. There's no visitation, there's no kiwanas,
- 15:28there's no Wednesday night prayer service.
- 15:32All the things that Baptists do feel
- 15:36Baptist, you know, talking about ritual. Okay, in that. In a
- 15:40lot of other churches, it's framed differently, but it's still the
- 15:44same kind of stuff, ritualism.
- 15:47I'll never forget this. I've led our
- 15:52body to take the Baptist name off
- 15:56of the church. Oh, my.
- 16:00It was like we were lowering the mass.
- 16:04And I'll tell you, it hit some people so
- 16:08hard, they left. Some people
- 16:13embraced it widely. They were
- 16:17ready. If I had it to do over again, I would never do it there.
- 16:21I would have. I would have left that
- 16:25church just like it was. Passed it on to
- 16:29somebody who fit the mold that I built and gone
- 16:34on and started something very non traditional. But you live in London.
- 16:38But the bigger story was, is that I really wasn't
- 16:43called to be a pastor of a church.
- 16:46I mean, that's real. That's the real key that I got out of all of
- 16:50it. Doesn't mean I couldn't help people and minister to
- 16:54them, but it meant that I didn't have the
- 16:59pastor's heart like a lot of guys did.
- 17:04That emotional cost in letting down the walls in
- 17:08that body was huge.
- 17:12And when you and I personally began to take
- 17:16off the mask, the emotional cost
- 17:21of not being fully seen, the exhaustion
- 17:26of pretending, feeling unknown,
- 17:29it's all going to come home. And it came home to me, you know,
- 17:34over the years after that scene with my father in
- 17:39the auditorium, I'll never
- 17:43forget it. And I go forward and
- 17:48that story I told in the last episode about
- 17:53being fully seen, I was fully
- 17:56and Completely seen for just who I was by someone who
- 18:01had already walked this path. And she was
- 18:05available to open her arms and
- 18:10just allow me to lower the mask and
- 18:15remove it. And I could be me. Yeah.
- 18:20And then put that mask off. And it
- 18:24did cost to take the mask off.
- 18:28And it came in small doses,
- 18:33but then it got larger and larger.
- 18:36Here's something that I learned as I lowered the mask, I had to seek
- 18:41out people that were safe.
- 18:45I told that story about moving into
- 18:50where I live now in Greblaft. Then this
- 18:55lady actually handed me
- 18:59her job. And with the blessing of the company and
- 19:05her own caveat was, you have to come to church with my husband
- 19:08and I. And I said, as long as it's not a Baptist church. Well,
- 19:16But what that was really saying was, I have to
- 19:20now go places where people are safe. And so I can tell you that I
- 19:24navigated into that, and I would push
- 19:28back on everyone and everything that was not safe. I would
- 19:32remove myself. And quickly. I learned
- 19:37that it was safe where
- 19:41it was safe to speak freely and be myself.
- 19:47And I learned. And I learned that this culture
- 19:51that I had stepped into, and it was a group of
- 19:55people who had all been divorced, had all had grown
- 19:59up in faith. Many of them had come from same
- 20:05background that I had come from, gone to a Christian
- 20:09college or university. I've been through a divorce.
- 20:14So when you go through the divorce, all the
- 20:17pretend comes down. If you get really honest,
- 20:21most people are forced to. And so
- 20:25it was a safe place. And I
- 20:29began to feel the safeness on the mask stayed off,
- 20:33and it's been off ever since.
- 20:38It gave me courage. I know that many of you
- 20:42are going. Walking through the mask
- 20:47that you've been wearing as I've been talking. You're thinking about the things
- 20:52that you have done to hide who you really are.
- 20:56I would encourage you. Let me just encourage you.
- 21:00Find a safe place with safe people so you
- 21:04can be who you are and allow the mask to
- 21:08come down. Because you're never going to live. From my own heart unless
- 21:14you are honest with yourself and allow that
- 21:18mask, that pretend Persona to come down.
- 21:23What does it cost? Well,
- 21:27it cost a whole lot. My vote.
- 21:31Yeah. I lost every pastor friend I had.
- 21:36Everyone. They. They weren't available for
- 21:40my phone calls, and I
- 21:44never received a call from any of them. I mean,
- 21:48I lost all of my pretend friends,
- 21:52all those people that I pastored. Gone.
- 21:55I had to seek a whole new world now.
- 21:59And by moving halfway across the country and then west
- 22:04coast to east Coast I learned that I never
- 22:08had myself to people who were judged
- 22:12me some. Now I'm a divorced pastor to talk
- 22:16about. There's no Persona anymore. But it's on a lot of judgment
- 22:21and to be honest, it still does.
- 22:24But that's okay. I'm not trying to pretend to be something I'm not these
- 22:29days. If you're living there, let me just encourage
- 22:33you, remove yourself from those who
- 22:37are unsafe. Find a space you are safe.
- 22:42I went to this small recovery rate on time
- 22:47just seeking.
- 22:54Safeness. And I'll
- 22:59never forget that the group dynamics
- 23:04were protected by the group leader and there was no cross
- 23:08talk or sharing. It was tell your story,
- 23:12there's no judgment and you accepted
- 23:17right where you were. That's rare and
- 23:22it takes time to draw a bond in that world.
- 23:26But if you're dealing with this, you need a place
- 23:30that's safe. And let me say this in
- 23:34the kindest way possible. That's probably not a group at your church of
- 23:40people that you go to church with. You probably need to step outside that world
- 23:45and seek out people who are
- 23:51less judgmental or don't know anything about you.
- 23:55Because if you're going to take the mask off,
- 23:59you're going to have to peel it one layer at a time. It might take
- 24:03some time and I can tell you that you need a safe
- 24:07ice safe people to do that.
- 24:11So let me encourage you, do it.
- 24:16Do it. In my
- 24:22effort to help people, here's what I
