- 0:00you guys kept a lot of retention at that
- 0:01linebacker before. What's kind of like
- 0:03the plans for them and how do you want
- 0:04to see them take that leap this year?
- 0:07>> Right. And I I think it's important as a
- 0:08coach, you always um
- 0:11build a plan for your players as to what
- 0:13what they need to work on and then how
- 0:15we're going to work to improve it
- 0:16together. And so even a player like, you
- 0:18know, Xavier Atkins who had amazing
- 0:20production and a lot of numbers, there's
- 0:22so many things he need. Um and so we sat
- 0:26down and met met met with him and gone
- 0:27through that and I think the great part
- 0:28is that he's very open that too realize
- 0:30that knows as well you know undoubted
- 0:33guys that that maybe didn't play as much
- 0:35obviously the things they need to work
- 0:36on. So um that's what we do kind of this
- 0:39time of year is individualize our plans
- 0:40for our players and and really put in
- 0:42place like here's the things we've
- 0:44identified as you know weaknesses or
- 0:46things to work on and then here's
- 0:48specifically how we're going to work on
- 0:49it. Um and and that that room in
- 0:52particular um those guys really embrace
- 0:54it. It it it's awesome. They're they're
- 0:55very coachable and you know they want to
- 0:57get better.
- 1:00>> Uh DJ, I just want to ask you another
- 1:02room defensive end edge. You lost a
- 1:04couple of look players there. How do you
- 1:06feel like the guys you brought in there?
- 1:08Is that a room where you may look to
- 1:10bring in or change the position and
- 1:11bring a guy like Rick Kim maybe or or
- 1:14maybe a defensive lineman to play the
- 1:16five day?
- 1:17>> Um I I I really like the the the room we
- 1:20put together as a whole and our
- 1:21defensive front. Um, just watch these
- 1:23guys run and move around, uh, I think
- 1:25really help ourselves is impressive. Um,
- 1:28you know, there's always, you guys know,
- 1:30we we play a lot of different personnel
- 1:31packages and guys in and out
- 1:33defensively. So, we have a lot of
- 1:35answers for edge type guys and and you
- 1:38know, whether it's in a pass situation
- 1:40or just normal down distance. Um I think
- 1:42on a roster one one of our strengths I
- 1:44think is is a lot of those linebacker
- 1:46body types that can play the the buck
- 1:48position for us and or inside linebacker
- 1:52and then Davis and then just very small.
- 1:55You guys brought back three defensive
- 1:57linemen that were freshman last season
- 1:58got got their feet wet. How important
- 2:00was that to bring them back and
- 2:02obviously get Dallas back for another
- 2:03year. How big is that for which front?
- 2:06>> Man, I can tell you what that that
- 2:08waiver coming through was huge for with
- 2:09Dallas. Um, I think Dallas played really
- 2:11well for us last year. I think he got
- 2:13better and better as the year went on
- 2:14and obviously he'll be a guy we can
- 2:16count on for sure move forward. That was
- 2:18a big one for us. And then the the three
- 2:20freshman you talked about, I mean, those
- 2:21guys, you know, they they played
- 2:23productive snaps for us last year and to
- 2:25play as a true freshman defensive line
- 2:27in the SEC is not an easy thing to do.
- 2:30Uh, we have really really high
- 2:31expectations for those guys this year
- 2:33and moving forward. And so that mall
- 2:36returns still to be here with us and and
- 2:38you know being that that next year
- 2:40development is critical. I I think one
- 2:42of the things being so missed and lost
- 2:44in culture right now is the development.
- 2:46And you know the way you can better
- 2:48anything in life is to do something
- 2:50consistently over and over again. And
- 2:52you know when these guys bounce around
- 2:54from year to year and you get different
- 2:55coaches, different system, different
- 2:57different drills that you're working on,
- 2:58it's really it's hard to continue to
- 3:01develop at the rate you should. So those
- 3:03guys in particular were expecting great
- 3:05things from them.
- 3:07>> DJ Davis Baker WSA Montgomery. I know
- 3:10you've been coaching a while, but are
- 3:11there any lessons that you learned from
- 3:12your time last year as an interim that
- 3:14you think can make you a better
- 3:15defensive coordinator going forward? And
- 3:17if so, what are those?
- 3:19>> I think like it always helps when you
- 3:21when you you change the lens in which
- 3:23you're looking at things, right? The
- 3:24things the things you look at then
- 3:25change. So sure, I mean, just for a
- 3:27little amount of time, you know, um it
- 3:30it broadens your perspective on things
- 3:32and and helps you understand maybe other
- 3:34positions better. Um so, you know, I I
- 3:37think all in all, right, when you when
- 3:39you gain those experiences, like being a
- 3:41coordinator, I think to go back and be a
- 3:43position coach, it helps you be a better
- 3:44position coach. Being a head coach, it
- 3:45helps you go back to be a better
- 3:46coordinator. You know, as you you go to
- 3:48that next step and you're kind of seeing
- 3:49what you want, how you want it done. And
- 3:51so, I think there's good reminders in
- 3:53that for sure. Go Nathan and then Mike
- 3:56>> DJ Nathan King already under recovery.
- 3:58You know those those few weeks for you
- 3:59last season of being promoted to interum
- 4:01and then and then joining coach Gish's
- 4:03staff. Can you kind of talk about that
- 4:05from a personal perspective? You know
- 4:07what that was like for you having kind
- 4:09of a bit of a whirlwind back and forth
- 4:11and and being involved in Auburn's
- 4:12coaching search and now talk as well
- 4:14about your decision to to stay here and
- 4:16and remain the defensive coordinator
- 4:17under coach K. Yeah, I think you know we
- 4:20all learn from experience in life and I
- 4:21think I' I've had enough experiences in
- 4:24college football and coaching in general
- 4:25to know um when you're at a great place
- 4:29don't be in a hurry to leave it. I think
- 4:30Auburn is a great place. I think we can
- 4:32win at the very highest level here at
- 4:33FIFA Championships. We will do that. Um
- 4:36I I love the guys I get to coach on a
- 4:38day-to-day basis. I love this this
- 4:40community, this university. My family
- 4:42really loves it here. And so th those
- 4:44things are all easy. Um the uh the time
- 4:47doing that obviously was was you know it
- 4:50it was 900 mph and that's something all
- 4:52the chance to make it look back reflect
- 4:54a little better just really have to have
- 4:55had that. I mean it was every day going
- 4:57full speed and then and then right into
- 4:59the next thing and then into the portal
- 5:00and everything else going on. So um
- 5:02that's kind of how our our job works how
- 5:05we operate and I'm doing that. I'm very
- 5:07very blessed to be here and thankful for
- 5:09the opportunity coach Bush has provided.
- 5:13coach uh Michael four Atkins exploded to
- 5:18see college football last year. Can you
- 5:20talk about uh getting him back and what
- 5:22that does for your defense? Uh and then
- 5:25can you talk about who is you guys
- 5:27acquired may have the opportunity to do
- 5:29what ex?
- 5:31>> Yeah, I mean his you know I think his
- 5:33numbers speak for themselves obviously
- 5:34the production at a very high rate. Um,
- 5:37you know, just it was really fun for me
- 5:39to see I I was part of Xavier's life at
- 5:42a younger age. He was in high school and
- 5:44recruiting him and getting to know him
- 5:45and his situation and um so to to then
- 5:48see it through I I I thought at one
- 5:50point we were going to be together
- 5:51coming out of high school and and you
- 5:52know things happened that didn't happen,
- 5:54but to get him here now and and to be a
- 5:56part of that with him to see him play at
- 5:58that level has been tremendous. Um and
- 6:00like I said, I think he has a lot of
- 6:02room for improvement in his game. I
- 6:03think, you know, he's got a lot of ways
- 6:05to get better and, you know, those
- 6:07numbers, those those are hard to improve
- 6:09on, but but we're certainly going to
- 6:10strive for it, but I think just in his
- 6:12game in particular, um, there's a lot of
- 6:14things we can do to get better at that.
- 6:15Um,
- 6:17overall defensively, we did make a lot
- 6:19of additions our defensive front, all
- 6:21um, as well as at the corner position in
- 6:23the back end. And, um, yeah, we have
- 6:26some guys there that are extremely
- 6:27talented. you go go watch our guys in
- 6:29workouts and run around. It's it's like,
- 6:31okay, we we got a chance to be be really
- 6:33good. Now you say that right now
- 6:35February the biggest challenge for all
- 6:37of our guys is going to be and it's it's
- 6:39I think probably kind of nationwide is
- 6:42how do you come collectively together as
- 6:43a team and and and build a togetherness
- 6:46and a standard of which they're they're
- 6:47going to operate together because you
- 6:49got a bunch of new faces on it and it's
- 6:50like okay we play the ultimate team
- 6:52sport and and the only way you're have
- 6:54success is those guys are bought into
- 6:56being accountable being a part of
- 6:57something bigger than themselves and so
- 7:00we've already talked about a bunch with
- 7:01our guys and that's what it's going to
- 7:02be now we're starting to build that
- 7:04right here in our winter workouts
- 7:05through spring ball through summer and
- 7:07getting into the season.
- 7:08>> Go third and be finished.
- 7:11>> I want to ask you about Deshawn Wac
- 7:13being, you know, one of those St.
- 7:14Francis guys also, but he's been in the
- 7:16league for several years. How important
- 7:17is it to get a guy like him who's been
- 7:19there and done that, you know,
- 7:20especially off the edge of this league?
- 7:22>> Yeah, it's huge. I mean, getting Sean
- 7:24was was a great one for us. He he's a um
- 7:27NFL type talent. Body um just all his
- 7:30his movement skills for the size he is
- 7:32is pretty incredible and and he does he
- 7:35has a great relationship with a lot of
- 7:36guys on our team as you mentioned that
- 7:37you know the St. Francis High School
- 7:39connection. Um you know I those guys
- 7:42look up to him. He he's he's a he's a
- 7:44guy that's been you know a leader in
- 7:45their lives and somebody they looked up
- 7:46to at a younger age as well. So, I think
- 7:48that that's that's natural um connection
- 7:51with some of the guys on our team and
- 7:53we're certainly going to going to expect
- 7:54big things out of him.
- 7:57>> DJ, every head coach has his way of
- 7:58doing things. Um what's different or
- 8:00what's changed for you over the last
- 8:02couple months the way the program is
- 8:03being run now?
- 8:05>> Yeah, co coach does a great job. I think
- 8:07he has a really good detailed plan of of
- 8:09how he wants things done um in every
- 8:12aspect of the program. There there's
- 8:13there's a good plan in place and good
- 8:15good reason behind it. Um, he's
- 8:18extremely hard worker. He's extremely
- 8:20approachable. I love that. I we've had
- 8:21good conversation on a lot of things and
- 8:23and you can, you know, you can tell
- 8:26there there's good feedback on both
- 8:28sides in those conversations, which I
- 8:30love. Um, and and so I think our players
- 8:32feel it too. I think I think they they
- 8:33see it. Um, you know, as a coach or a
- 8:36player, when you're when you're part of
- 8:37something organization, I mean, you want
- 8:39to know that there's there there's good
- 8:41reason why they're doing. And and when
- 8:43you when you know what that is, so good
- 8:45about it. I mean, what else can you ask
- 8:46for? and he he does an outstanding job
- 8:48as a communicator to the coaches and
- 8:50players.
- 8:51>> All right, thank you. Thanks.
- 8:53>> All right, guys.
